  7. Week number six in our series on spiritual growth.

  8. Now, how many of you, this is your first time

  9. being with us in the last five weeks or six weeks?

  10. Have no fear. We do enough recap that you will

  11. understand what's going on and how this works.

  12. But this is week number six in spiritual growth.

  13. I'm going to start out by looking at 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 2:14

  14. 2, verse 14. It says this, the natural man does

  15. not receive the things of the Spirit of God.

  16. for they are foolishness to him, nor can he know

  17. them, because they are spiritually discerned.

  18. Everybody say natural man. 1 Corinthians 3 verses

    1 Corinthians 3:1–3

  19. 1 through 3 says this, And I, brethren, could

  20. not speak to you as spiritual people, but as

  21. to carnal, as to babes in Christ. I fed you with

  22. milk and not with solid food, for until now you

  23. were not able to receive it, and even now you

  24. are still not able. For you are still carnal.

  25. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions

  26. among you, are you not carnal and behaving like

  27. mere men? Or we could replace it with the word

  28. from the other verse, behaving like natural men.

  29. So in these four verses, we find out that there

  30. are three types of people. Three types of people.

  31. The first type of person is a natural person.

  32. Everybody say natural. This is someone who is

  33. not a Christian. They're not born again. And

  34. they're just led by their flesh or their sensual

  35. nature. I mean, they're without Christ. All they

  36. have to live by is what feels good or what seems

  37. right in their own eyes. That's the only... course,

  38. the only direction that they have. And the verse

  39. that we read said that, you know, the things

  40. of God are only spiritually discerned. They cannot

  41. know the things of God because they're not born

  42. again. They do not have the Spirit of God living

  43. inside them. Then we see a carnal person. Everybody

  44. say carnal. Now, a carnal person is a Christian,

  45. but they're still living according to their flesh.

  46. They're still living like a natural person. They're

  47. immature. They, you know, it doesn't matter how

  48. many years they've been a Christian. If they're

  49. carnal, they're just like babies still. And Paul

  50. said, look, I want to give you some meat, but

  51. all you can handle is milk. Because they refuse

  52. to feed on the Word of God and to grow. That's

  53. a carnal person. Then we see a spiritual person.

  54. Everybody say spiritual. A spiritual person is

  55. a Christian who is led by the Holy Spirit and

  56. led by the Word of God. Now this is a growing

  57. Christian. Everybody say growing. A growing Christian

  58. who regularly receives the Word of God and walks

  59. in the Spirit according to the Word of God. So

  60. where does this spiritual growth occur? Do we

  61. go to the gym and lift weights to get spiritually

  62. mature and spiritually strong, spiritually strengthened?

  63. No, that's physically. So where does spiritual

  64. growth occur? The Bible tells us that we are

  65. three -part beings. There are multiple verses.

  66. I'm just going to read one today. 1 Thessalonians

  67. 5 .23 says this, Now may the God of peace make

  68. you holy. Everybody say set apart. May the God

  69. of peace make you holy or set apart in every

  70. way. And may your whole spirit and soul and body

  71. be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ

  72. comes again. So here we see that we are three

  73. part beings. A lot of people think that we're

  74. just a soul and flesh, but no, we are a spirit.

  75. Everybody say, I am a spirit. You're created

  76. in the image of God. So to say that again, you

  77. are created in the image of God. You are a spirit

  78. being. And you have a soul. And you live in a

  79. body. I don't have to describe what your body

  80. is. All you have to do is pinch your arm, you

  81. know, and that's... That's your body. That's

  82. your flesh. But you have a soul. You have a soul.

  83. You are a spirit. Now, your spirit, when you

  84. are born as a human because of the fall in the

  85. garden, your spirit is born. When you're born,

  86. you are a spirit, but your spirit is not connected

  87. with God, and your spirit is separated from God.

  88. When you become a Christian, your spirit comes

  89. alive unto God. Your spirit is united with Christ.

  90. Your spirit moves from being immersed in sin

  91. to being immersed in Christ. And the Bible is

  92. clear. It says when we're in Christ, we have

  93. put on the righteousness of God. in Christ Jesus,

  94. your spirit is completely righteous and right

  95. with God. You are complete in Him. Every promise

  96. that's attached to who you are in Christ and

  97. what you have in Christ is yours. It's available

  98. to you the moment you are born again. How many

  99. of you know that your soul didn't change when

  100. your spirit got saved? Let me tell you what your

  101. soul is, and you'll agree with me. Your soul

  102. is made up of your mind, your will, and your

  103. emotions. So how many of you, when you came to

  104. Christ, all of a sudden your thought life just

  105. immediately changed, and now your mind and focus

  106. is on God, and it's never on anything else. You

  107. just completely, your thought life is just completely

  108. transformed immediately. No, that takes a little

  109. work. Look at the person beside you and say,

  110. that's going to take a little work. It's still

  111. taking a little work. What about your will or

  112. your desires? Did your desires just immediately

  113. change? All of a sudden you didn't desire anything

  114. that wasn't godly anymore. No, it's going to

  115. take some work. What about your emotions and

  116. your feelings? Did those automatically change

  117. when you were born again? No. How many of you...

  118. Say that God needs to continue to work. The Spirit

  119. of God needs to continue to work. The Word of

  120. God needs to continue to work to transform my

  121. thought life, my desires, and my feelings. About

  122. three of us. The rest of you got it all down

  123. pat. The difference between a carnal and a spiritual

  124. person is the spiritual growth of the soul or

  125. the lack thereof. As spirit beings, when our

  126. spirits become alive unto God, we're supposed

  127. to begin to allow our spirit to control our lives.

  128. Our spirit who is connected with the Holy Spirit,

  129. the Spirit of God, the transformation should

  130. begin to take place, but it's going to take our

  131. cooperation for it to take place. It's not just

  132. going to automatically happen. You're going to

  133. have to cooperate. Spiritual maturity is not

  134. measured by how long you've been a Christian.

  135. I think it was last week, I celebrated 51 years

  136. of being a Christian last week. But that doesn't

  137. mean that I'm spiritually mature just because

  138. years have passed. Spiritual maturity is not

  139. measured by how often you attend worship services.

  140. I mean, I want you to be here every week. I think

  141. God wants you to be here every week. But you

  142. can go to church every week and still be spiritually

  143. immature. You don't measure spiritual maturity

  144. by how much scripture you can quote. Did anyone

  145. grow up doing Bible drills at church where you

  146. tried to memorize Scripture and then you had

  147. competitions with other people and, you know,

  148. memorizing a bunch of Bible verses? That doesn't

  149. mean you're spiritually mature. If you can quote

  150. the Bible, it doesn't mean that you're spiritually

  151. mature. I mean, there's nothing wrong with either

  152. one of these things. Nothing wrong with it. But

  153. that doesn't mean spiritual maturity. Luke 6,

    Luke 6:43

  154. verses 43 and 44, Jesus says this, A good tree

  155. does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree

  156. bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its

  157. own fruit. Jesus has given us some insight. Spiritual

  158. maturity is not about... It's about how much

  159. of the fruit of the Spirit is alive in our lives

  160. and increasing in our lives and evidenced in

  161. our lives. That's what we've been looking at

  162. in this series. It doesn't matter how long you've

  163. been a Christian, how much you go to church,

  164. how many Bible verses you can quote, if you're

  165. not walking in love, if you're not experiencing

  166. the joy of the Lord in the Holy Spirit, if you're

  167. not experiencing the peace of God that surpasses

  168. understanding, if you're not patient, if you're

  169. not kind, None of that other stuff matters if

  170. we're not being transformed into the image of

  171. Christ. If practically, not just at church on

  172. Sunday morning, but when we go to school or when

  173. we go to work or when we're at home, if none

  174. of these things are evident in our lives, we're

  175. not spiritually mature. We're just fooling ourselves

  176. if those things are not evident in our lives.

  177. Now listen, I've said it from up front. This

  178. series is a series in self -examination. Because

  179. it's so easy to sit here. Listen, it's so easy

  180. to sit here and you talk about the fruit of the

  181. Spirit and then you begin saying, well, you know

  182. what? My sorry brother -in -law, he sure does.

  183. I've got a wonderful brother -in -law. I'm just

  184. giving an example. Okay? It's not for us to think

  185. about someone who's not here or even someone

  186. who is sitting beside us. It's not for us to

  187. look at them and begin to judge how spiritually

  188. mature they are. No, this is a self -examination.

  189. Because everyone in this room, I promise you,

  190. everyone in this room is a work in progress.

  191. None of us have arrived. And if all of a sudden

  192. your mind clash with me and you say, no, I have

  193. arrived. I am spiritually mature. You just told

  194. me that you are a spiritual teenager. I'll never

  195. forget hitting the teenage years and I begin

  196. to think that my parents didn't know anything

  197. and I knew everything. So to think that you've

  198. arrived means that you're just a spiritual teenager.

  199. I don't care who you are. I don't care if you're

  200. the Pope. If you think you've arrived, you're

  201. just spiritual teenage. Probably shouldn't have

  202. said that. But anyway. Galatians 5, 22 and 23.

  203. This is how far we've come. The fruit of the

  204. Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness.

  205. And today, we're going to be focusing on goodness.

  206. Everybody say goodness. Goodness is our focus.

  207. Here's a Greek word. Agathosune. Got to put the

  208. right accent on the right syllable. All right.

  209. Somebody smile or laugh or something. And, you

  210. know, usually when we look up a word in the Koine

  211. Greek and we look at the definition, usually

  212. there's some other things attached to it. I was

  213. talking with Irv at Life Group. He said, what

  214. are you going to preach on this week, Preacher?

  215. And I said, we might be on goodness. I might

  216. go somewhere else. I said, I just have to look

  217. up the Greek word. And he said, I ain't concerned

  218. about the Greek. I just need to know the English.

  219. But the New Testament is written in Koine Greek,

  220. right? So we need to understand. The words that

  221. have been translated into English, because the

  222. Bible wasn't written in English. Our language

  223. is fluid. And we need to know what God said as

  224. best as we can. And guess what? Goodness means

  225. goodness. Isn't that good? Goodness just means

  226. goodness. Goodness means goodness. That is the

  227. definition. There are no other words. But it

  228. gives us some examples. An example, it said in

  229. the Strong's Concordance, it says virtue or beneficence.

  230. Who wants to get the mic and give me definitions

  231. of virtue or beneficence? It's pretty bad when

  232. you've got to look up the definition to find

  233. out what the definition means. Right? Don't worry,

  234. I did that for you in Merriam -Webster Dictionary.

  235. Virtue is morally good behavior or character.

  236. Everybody say morally good. And where is morally

  237. based on? Morally is based on Scripture. Morality

  238. is based on Scripture. To find real morality.

  239. It's not, you don't look at culture to find what

  240. morality is. You look at scripture to find out

  241. what it is. And virtue is morally good behavior

  242. or character. So, everybody say, it's what I

  243. am and what I do. Because it's character and

  244. behavior. It's not just a mindset. It's bigger

  245. than that. It's beyond that. Beneficence is the

  246. quality or state of doing or producing good.

  247. So, the fruit of the Spirit is goodness. What

  248. does that look like? It looks like if we are

  249. in Christ and we are growing, The more we grow

  250. spiritually, the more morally good we become.

  251. I don't want you to get me wrong here because

  252. we don't gain the favor of God and we don't become

  253. right with God by our actions. I don't want you

  254. to get this mixed up. We're right with God based

  255. on what Jesus did on the cross. But when we are

  256. born again, it should change who we are and how

  257. we act and what we do. Now that doesn't make

  258. us any more right with God because you can't

  259. grow in righteousness. You can't grow in righteousness.

  260. If you could grow in righteousness, then you're

  261. telling me that you can be more righteous than

  262. Jesus was because we're clothed in His righteousness.

  263. So what would it take for you to say, oh, I can

  264. be more righteous than Jesus was. No, we're perfectly

  265. righteous because of what He did. We put on the

  266. righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, is what

  267. the Bible says, at salvation. But that does not

  268. mean that we can continue to purposefully live

  269. in sin. If we choose to live in sin, then we

  270. are carnal believers. Are you with me? And beneficence

  271. is the quality or state of doing good and producing

  272. good. We ought to be good people. We ought to

  273. be good people. When people look at us, they

  274. don't need to say that we're goody -two -shoes,

  275. but they need to recognize us as good people

  276. when we're in Christ. They shouldn't look at

  277. us and say that we're mean people. They shouldn't

  278. ever look at us and say, well, I didn't think

  279. Christians acted like that. I didn't think Christians

  280. talked like that. I didn't think Christians did

  281. that. Hello? Goodness begins with God. I want

  282. to say that again. Goodness begins with God.

  283. God is not occasionally good. God is good by

  284. nature. Everything He does flows from His character.

  285. The Bible tells us that God is love. The Bible

  286. also tells us that God is good. Everybody say,

  287. God is good. If you ever interpret anything in

  288. life to come to the point that says, well, God

  289. must not be good because this happened or that

  290. happened, and we interpret it as God brought

  291. some kind of... terrible thing, and we accuse

  292. God of not being good, we are not connecting

  293. the dots correctly. Whether it's in Scripture

  294. or in life, we're not connecting the dots correctly.

  295. If we ever come to the result that God is not

  296. love or God is not good, then it's not God, it's

  297. us who have it mixed up in our understanding.

  298. God's a good God. Jesus even said, John 10, 10,

  299. the thief comes to steal, to kill, and destroy.

  300. Don't ever accuse God of any of that. Jesus said

  301. He came to give us life and that we would have

  302. it more abundantly to the fullest. God gives

  303. us life so that we can experience the life of

  304. God. Life of God. Everybody say, God is good.

  305. And try to pause from saying all the time, because

  306. that's normally what everybody wants to say.

  307. God is good. Goodness reflects God's character.

  308. Goodness is who God is and what God does. I'll

  309. say that again. Goodness is who God is and what

  310. God does. I've got some verses for you. I can't

  311. read them all because there are more than 70

  312. Bible verses that directly state the Lord is

  313. good. It would take me a while to read 70. And

  314. then there are more than 190 verses that declare

  315. His goodness. Y 'all don't want me to preach

  316. that long. That's a lot of verses that directly

  317. say that the Lord is good. And then it talks

  318. about His goodness in Scripture, but I do have

  319. some for you in just a second. Does anybody know

  320. who Dr. David Jeremiah is? I found this quote

  321. this week. God's goodness conveys His generosity.

  322. His goodness means far more than His generosity,

  323. but it certainly includes His infinitely generous

  324. attitude. Towards us. By nature. God longs to

  325. bring joy. And blessing. To all his creatures.

  326. It's good. I mean I know it's not a Bible verse.

  327. It's good. I think it lines up with a lot of

  328. Bible verses. I'll read it again. God's goodness

  329. conveys his generosity. His goodness means far

  330. more than His generosity, but it certainly includes

  331. His infinitely generous attitude towards you

  332. and towards me. By God's very nature, He longs

  333. to bring joy and blessing to all His creatures.

  334. And that's who God is. That's who God is. 1 Chronicles

  335. 16, 34. Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good.

  336. Somebody say, He is good. His faithful love endures

  337. forever. Psalm 119, 68. Speaking to God, you

  338. are good. And do only good. Everybody say, God

  339. is good. Everything He does is good. Nahum 1

  340. .7. If you have to give your Bible, you might

  341. need to kind of squeeze the pages apart because

  342. you might not have been in Nahum often. Nahum

  343. 1 .7. The Lord is good. Everybody say, the Lord

  344. is good. He's a strong refuge when trouble comes.

  345. He is close to those who trust Him. He's close

  346. to those who have their faith in Him, their confidence

  347. in Him. He's close to you when you trust Him.

  348. And He's a strong refuge when you face trouble.

  349. The Lord is good. James 1 .17 Whatever is good

  350. and perfect is a gift coming down to us from

  351. God our Father who created all the lights in

  352. the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting

  353. shadow. I memorized it like this during my Bible

  354. drill days that I talked about a minute ago.

  355. Every good and perfect gift comes down from the

  356. Father of lights. Every good thing that has ever

  357. come into your life, whether you're in Christ

  358. or not, every good thing that's ever come into...

  359. Anyone's life on this earth, every good thing

  360. has come from God. You know why? Because He's

  361. good. And that's what He does. So every good

  362. thing has come from Him. Psalm 23, 6. This ought

  363. to make you happy. Surely your goodness, God,

  364. your goodness and unfailing love will pursue

  365. me all the days of my life. God is good. And

  366. His goodness is always running after us. His

  367. goodness is pursuing us. Hallelujah. Sometimes

  368. we need to quit running so hard and turn around

  369. and say, goodness, and give goodness a big hug.

  370. Because God's goodness is coming after you. It's

  371. coming after you. Psalm 27, 13. This is a confidence

  372. that we need to have too. I am confident that

  373. I will see the Lord's goodness. I am confident

  374. I will see the Lord's goodness. I'm confident

  375. that I'm going to see the goodness of God because

  376. God's good, and I'm going to see his goodness.

  377. Confident. Sometimes when we're in the middle

  378. of a hard place, you know, it's like, oh, God,

  379. where are you? His goodness is coming. His goodness

  380. is pursuing you. Even when you can't see it.

  381. See, it's easy to be confident in the Lord's

  382. goodness when you're experiencing His goodness.

  383. But listen, some days we don't feel, our feelings

  384. are not that we're seeing His goodness. Our sight

  385. is not that we're seeing His goodness because

  386. what we see, Doesn't look good. Has anybody been

  387. alive more than 30 minutes? This is life in a

  388. fallen world. But right in the middle of it,

  389. right in the middle of whatever you face, this

  390. is a good one to memorize and a good one to say.

  391. Right in the middle of it, I am confident that

  392. I'm going to see the Lord's goodness. It's coming.

  393. I don't see it right now, but I'm confident that

  394. I'm going to see it. And the reason why I'm so

  395. confident is because I know that God is good.

  396. I know He's good. And I'm going to see His goodness.

  397. Hallelujah. Since God is good, have I convinced

  398. you that God is good yet without reading 260

  399. verses? Since God is good, It makes perfect sense

  400. that He would desire to cultivate goodness in

  401. us, that He would desire to manifest this same

  402. characteristic, His goodness in His people. It

  403. makes perfect sense. Now, goodness, this word,

  404. this Greek word that I read a few moments ago,

  405. or tried to read. It's strictly a biblical term.

  406. It appears four times. Everybody say four times.

  407. That word appears four times in the New Testament.

  408. And no scholar has been able to find that form

  409. of that word in any other Greek writings. Four

  410. times. It's talking about God's goodness in us

  411. and through us. Ephesians 5, 8 and 9. Now let's

  412. talk about us. Talk about God's being good and

  413. His goodness. Ephesians 5, verses 8 through 9.

    Ephesians 5:8–9

  414. For once, everybody say, I used to. For once,

  415. you were full of darkness. I used to be full

  416. of darkness. But now, You have light from the

  417. Lord. So live as people of light. For this light

  418. within you produces only what is good and right

  419. and true. That's another occurrence. Because

  420. I read it, the fruit of the Spirit is goodness.

  421. That's one of the occurrences. This is another

  422. one. And it's saying the light of God. We used

  423. to be full of darkness. But now that we're in

  424. Christ, we are filled with light. We're no longer

  425. filled with darkness. We're filled with light

  426. in the Lord. And because we are filled with light,

  427. we need to live as people of light. And here's

  428. what the light's going to do. It's going to produce

  429. only what is good and right and true. Goodness

  430. shines in darkness. Goodness shines in darkness.

  431. I hear people say all the time, this world sure

  432. is getting dark. Has anybody heard anybody say

  433. that? Boy, the world's sure getting dark. The

  434. darker it is, the easier it is to see light.

  435. If I struck a match right now or lit a flashlight

  436. right here right now, it wouldn't really make

  437. a difference because there's a lot of light in

  438. this room. But if we cut off all the lights and

  439. covered the windows, if I lit just a real tiny

  440. little flashlight, it would put a whole lot of

  441. light in this room. So I want to encourage you,

  442. the darker the world gets, the more that our

  443. light can shine. The more it can shine. And if

  444. it's ever too dark, it means that more Christians

  445. need to be allowing the light and the life of

  446. God to shine through them. And part of the way

  447. that light shines through us from the verse that

  448. we just looked at, That light works goodness.

  449. And people see the goodness of God. They should

  450. be able to look at us and say, hey, you're a

  451. good person. And the things you do are good for

  452. other people. And you know what? That's not what

  453. the world looks like. But it's what the church

  454. should look like. Goodness shines in darkness.

  455. 2 Thessalonians 1 .11. Here's the other occurrence

  456. of the word. So we keep on praying for you, asking

  457. our God to enable you to live a life worthy of

  458. His call. May He give to you the power to accomplish

  459. all the good things. Everybody say good things.

  460. All the good things your faith prompts you to

  461. do. This is the same word as goodness. And praying

  462. for the believers in Thessalonica that God would

  463. give them the power. Where does the power come

  464. from? Where does the power come from? Specifically.

  465. Everybody say the Holy Spirit. He's the one who

  466. empowers us. He's the one who empowers us. That's

  467. where the power comes from. So may the Holy Spirit

  468. empower you to accomplish good things that your

  469. faith prompts you to do. By the Word of God,

  470. faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word

  471. of God. And as we walk in the Spirit, He's connecting

  472. us to the Word of God, and He's prompting us

  473. to do things in alignment with the Word of God.

  474. And guess what? He's not only going to prompt

  475. us, He's going to empower us to accomplish those

  476. good things. Goodness is more than appearance.

  477. Goodness is more than appearance. Romans 15,

  478. 13 and 14. I pray that God, the source of hope,

  479. will fill you completely with joy and peace because

  480. you trust him. Then you will overflow with confident

  481. hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. I

  482. am fully convinced, my dear brothers and sisters,

  483. that you are full. Of goodness. Full of goodness.

  484. We live in a world where dishonesty is normalized.

  485. Cheat to get your way ahead, right? Immorality

  486. is celebrated. Compromise is excused. Selfishness

  487. is promoted. That's the kind of world That we

  488. live in today. But the goodness of God is the

  489. goodness that comes from God and shows itself

  490. in spiritual and moral excellence. Look at the

  491. person beside you and tell them we're called

  492. to be different. Set apart. Peculiar. A holy

  493. nation. A peculiar people. We should show forth

  494. the praises of God who's brought us out of darkness

  495. and placed us into his marvelous light. Goodness

  496. should be who we are and what we do as followers

  497. of Christ. And I need to remind you of something.

  498. Appearances don't always reveal truth. Goodness

  499. is not image management. It's not just wanting

  500. to appear good and putting on a front at certain

  501. times so that people would think that we're good.

  502. Goodness is consistency. It's consistency between

  503. your public life and your private life. It's

  504. consistency between your church life and your

  505. home life. It's easy to slick up real good for

  506. an hour or two on Sunday morning. But that's

  507. not necessarily who we really are. Goodness is

  508. consistency between your visible behavior, what

  509. everybody else can see, and your hidden behavior

  510. that only you or a few people know about. And

  511. fruit reveals authenticity over time. Goodness

  512. flows from transformation. Everybody say transformation.

  513. This goodness that we're talking about, it flows

  514. from transformation. I use this story a lot,

  515. but we're going to look at it in a different

  516. way. And you're probably familiar with it, but

  517. I'm going to read it as quickly as I can because

  518. you should be familiar with the story. In Luke

    Luke 10:30–35

  519. 10, verses 30 through 35, Jesus told a parable.

  520. And he was using it to describe who the neighbor

  521. was. But I want us to take a look at it in a

  522. different way. A Jewish man was traveling on

  523. a trip from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he was

  524. attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his

  525. clothes, beat him up, left him half dead beside

  526. the road. By chance, a priest came along, but

  527. when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to

  528. the other side of the road and passed him by.

  529. A temple assistant walked over and looked at

  530. him lying there. but he also passed by on the

  531. other side. Then a despised Samaritan came along,

  532. and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for

  533. him. Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed

  534. his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged

  535. them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and

  536. took him to an inn where he took care of him.

  537. The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver

  538. coins, telling him, take care of this man. If

  539. his bill runs higher than this, I'll pay you

  540. next time I'm there. I want us to look at the

  541. people who interacted with the man who got beat

  542. up and who was half dead laying on the side of

  543. the road. I want to go from that angle. Now,

  544. Jesus was talking to a Pharisee, so obviously

  545. he's going to use religious people and show that

  546. they were not the neighbor. The person like he

  547. was talking to, was not being a neighbor because

  548. he hated Samaritans. And then he used the Samaritan

  549. as being the neighbor. But I just want to look

  550. at the people. The robbers represent a type of

  551. people, people who are just selfish and hostile.

  552. They want what they want. They're going to do

  553. whatever they do. They don't care who they hurt.

  554. You know, they just want what they want. Okay?

  555. They're not good. Everybody say not good. Not

  556. good. Not working towards helping people or working

  557. towards goodness towards others. They're selfish

  558. and hostile. Next people type is the priest who

  559. is basically just indifferent. Everybody say

  560. indifferent. I mean, he didn't beat the guy up

  561. and rob the guy, right? He's not the one who

  562. knocked him down. But he wasn't willing to help

  563. him up either. There's a lot of people like that.

  564. They're not like the bandits. They're just indifferent.

  565. We can still say that they're pretty selfish

  566. and self -oriented. They won't knock you down,

  567. but they're not going to help you up. And what

  568. about the temple assistant who... is also a Levite.

  569. Levites were students of the law, so we can say

  570. that he's legalistic. He has all the answers.

  571. But it doesn't impact the way he lives. It doesn't

  572. impact what he does. Right? Like the person who's

  573. got all these Bible verses. But goodness is not

  574. flowing through them. You wouldn't say they were

  575. a good person. You wouldn't say they were spiritually

  576. mature. Because probably all of us have encountered

  577. some very mean people who go to church all the

  578. time and could quote you a bunch of Bible verses.

  579. Has anyone experienced some folks like that before?

  580. There's some mean people who go to church. I've

  581. been in church a long time. I played the organ

  582. nine months before I was born. I was helping

  583. mom with the bass pedals on the organ. I mean,

  584. they're some mean people. They think they have

  585. all the answers, but it's not impacting their

  586. life. It's not impacting the way they live or

  587. associate with other people. And then we see

  588. the Samaritan. In context of what we're talking

  589. about today, we would say that he... In this

  590. story, out of everybody who has had interaction

  591. with this man who's beat up, he's a good person.

  592. And he's displaying goodness toward this stranger.

  593. So that gives us a little more insight. Spiritual

  594. growth is a result of God's nature, who God is.

  595. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness. Those are

  596. all descriptions, ultimately, of God. So spiritual

  597. growth is a result of God's nature shaping our

  598. nature. God didn't send us the Holy Spirit to

  599. just instruct us on how to act better externally

  600. or act better according to our flesh. Just need

  601. to try harder. The Holy Spirit's not there going...

  602. Well, you know what? You just need to try harder.

  603. Keep trying harder. You can do this. That's not

  604. what he does. He works in us to transform us

  605. and transform our desires from the inside out.

  606. It's not just trying harder in the flesh. It's

  607. being transformed. Christianity is not behavior

  608. modification. It's heart transformation. That's

  609. what it is. And one of the dangers of church

  610. culture is learning how to look spiritual without

  611. growing spiritually. We got all the words. We

  612. got all the songs. We got all the things on our

  613. calendar. We need to be careful that we're not

  614. just looking spiritual. But we're growing spiritually.

  615. And goodness, everybody say goodness. Goodness

  616. is evidence of spiritual growth. God is more

  617. interested in who you are becoming than what

  618. you are accomplishing. I just have to sit here

  619. a minute because this needs to impact you. It

  620. needs to impact me. God is more interested in

  621. who you are becoming than what you are accomplishing.

  622. Because it's easy to get to the point where,

  623. well, God, I'm doing this for you and I'm doing

  624. this for you and I'm doing this for you. God,

  625. I'm volunteering, I'm doing this. God, look at

  626. all this stuff I'm accomplishing for you. But

  627. God's more interested in who you are becoming.

  628. Are you becoming more like Christ? I've already

  629. said this one time, but since God is good, it

  630. makes perfect sense that He's wanting to work

  631. in us, for us to be good, as goodness being a

  632. characteristic in our lives. And the ultimate

  633. goal of spiritual growth is to become more like

  634. Jesus. Goodness is the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

  635. What does the Holy Spirit do in our lives and

  636. for us? Jesus told us in John 16, verses 13 through

    John 16:13–15

  637. 15, He said, But when He, the Spirit of truth,

  638. comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will

  639. not speak on His own. He will speak only what

  640. He hears, and He will tell you what is yet. He

  641. will glorify me, Jesus said, because it is from

  642. me that the Holy Spirit will receive what he

  643. will make known to you. All that belongs to the

  644. Father is mine. That's why I said the Spirit

  645. will receive from me what he will make known

  646. to you. God the Holy Spirit takes hold. Of the

  647. things of God. The things that God has for us.

  648. And He is the one who declares them to us. He's

  649. the one who intensifies them in us. He makes

  650. them known to us. He is the connector. And without

  651. Him, there is no connection. Jesus said, it's

  652. better that I go back to heaven. Because I'm

  653. going to send you the comforter. I'm going to

  654. send you the helper. He's the one who's going

  655. to connect you. Jesus said this in John 15, 5.

  656. He said, I'm the vine. You are the branches.

  657. Those who remain in me, everybody say abide.

  658. Everybody say live. As opposed to visiting. A

  659. lot of people just visit God. He said, those

  660. who abide in me, those who live in me, those

  661. who remain in me, and I in them will produce

  662. much fruit. So how many of us in the room look

  663. at our lives and say, you know, I'm thankful

  664. that I'm not who I used to be. I'm thankful that

  665. I can see that I am growing. But I can see that

  666. I've still got a ways to go. So how? How is the

  667. spiritual growth? That we desire, hopefully we

  668. desire to grow spiritually and be more spiritually

  669. mature this week than we were last week. So how

  670. is that going to happen? It's going to happen

  671. in the ways that we just look. Because fruit

  672. grows naturally where a healthy connection exists.

  673. Jesus is divine. We are the branches. We've got

  674. to be connected. We've got to abide. Not just

  675. visit him every once in a while. but live in

  676. Him and allow His life to flow through us. Spiritual

  677. growth is not about more self -dedication. It's

  678. not about more self -determination. It's not

  679. about more self -effort. But it's about abiding

  680. in Christ. It's also about acknowledging the

  681. indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. If He

  682. is alive in us and we are the temple of the Holy

  683. Spirit, then we need to be acknowledging Him.

  684. Not just on Sunday morning. On Sunday afternoon.

  685. On Monday morning. On Friday night. On Saturday.

  686. We need to be acknowledging the Holy Spirit of

  687. God. His indwelling presence. The Bible says

  688. that we're supposed to walk in the Spirit. That

  689. we're supposed to yield to the Spirit. Because

  690. the Holy Spirit, if we will acknowledge Him,

  691. He's going to direct us. He's going to guide

  692. us. He's going to empower us. But we have to

  693. acknowledge Him. He's not just going to smack

  694. us over the head. It's not the way this works.

  695. He's a gentleman. He's not going to force you

  696. to grow. We've got to cooperate. We've got to

  697. acknowledge. We've got to yield. As He is speaking

  698. to us, we've got to say, yes, I will follow you.

  699. I will yield to you. I will no longer yield to

  700. my own desires. I will no longer yield to the

  701. thoughts that come into my mind that do not agree

  702. with your word or your promises for me. I'll

  703. no longer set my mind on those things. Because

  704. I want to follow you. I will no longer follow

  705. the negative emotions that rise up on me as a

  706. response to what I see. I'm not going to follow

  707. those anymore. I'm going to yield to you. Because

  708. my soul, my thought life, my desires, my feelings,

  709. I put them under subjection to my spirit who

  710. is alive unto God and connected with God. I'm

  711. going to be transformed. I'm going to walk with

  712. you. God, help us get it. Help us get it. Give

  713. us revelation of your truth today in such a way

  714. that it transforms us, makes a difference. Not

  715. just a little religious experience this morning,

  716. but something that makes a difference in our

  717. lives. Hallelujah. It's the measure of your goodness.

  718. Again, think about the doorpost where children

  719. are growing and you put a ruler on their head

  720. and mark the doorpost, write their name and the

  721. year beside it. I want you to think of a spiritual

  722. doorpost as you consider the self -examination

  723. through the fruit of the Spirit. How mature are

  724. you? In your love walk. How mature are you? How

  725. much joy are you experiencing? How much peace

  726. are you experiencing? You say, boy, I don't have

  727. much joy or much peace. Well, then your marker's

  728. way down here. I'm not trying to bring any condemnation

  729. on anybody, but if you're not experiencing the

  730. peace of God, The Holy Spirit is calling you

  731. to come up higher. Because the kingdom of God

  732. is not about rules, it says in Romans. It's about

  733. righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

  734. So if you're not experiencing it, it's available.

  735. Don't be condemned. God's calling you up higher.

  736. He's saying, look what I have for you. Look at

  737. this fruit that I want to be evident in your

  738. life. Look at this fruit that as you're connected

  739. to me, my life is going to flow through you and

  740. this fruit is going to grow and it's going to

  741. mature and it's going to increase. This is what

  742. I have for you. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,

  743. goodness. This is the life of God flowing in

  744. us. God always has more. He always has more.

  745. How's it going to increase? Abiding. Acknowledging.

  746. Walking. Yielding. That's how it's going to increase.

  747. Takes your cooperation. I can't get you all to

  748. come up here and stand in line and tap you on

  749. the head and pray for you and just all this becomes

  750. a mature fruit in your life. That's not the way

  751. it works. If it did, let's line up. But that's

  752. not the way it works. Take some work. Take some

  753. cooperation. Hallelujah. Let's pray. God, thank

  754. you. Thank you for today. Thank you for your

  755. word. Thank you for your truth. God, I pray that

  756. it will be planted like seed and good soil in

  757. each one of our hearts. That the cares of this

  758. life won't choke it out. But it will be planted

  759. in our hearts. In such a way that the roots grow

  760. deep in good soil and it produces a good harvest

  761. in our lives. In Jesus' name, amen. This online

  762. worship experience was brought to you by the

  763. friends and partners of Eulation Church.
