Sermon Series: “At the Table with Jesus” | Sermon: “Two International Meals”

Good morning. Morning

I'd like to welcome all of you to

our worship service here at Red United Methodist

Church. We welcome those who are joining with

us. In person, we welcome those who are

joining with us online. We are so glad

that you are here with us whether you

are a member or a visitor.

My name is Steven Coleman. I'm 1 of

the associate pastors here at Rev.

Our lead pastor, the reverend doctor Pete Moon

is preaching this morning. We are continuing once

again with our Sermon series someone at the

table with Jesus, We will be hearing some

stories about Jesus having a meal with

2 women this morning,

and we will,

hear some lessons about this meal.

And, also want to, highlight,

couple of announcements.

First of all, beginning next Sunday, we will

be having what we call our,

mission in the middle. So at 09:30,

in our welcome center, we will be having

a mission project,

and we invite all of you to join

us for that project.

Also, as part of that, we will be

having a doughnut

challenge.

So there will be doughnuts from, different places

every week and you'll have an opportunity to

find out what who has the most delicious

doughnut in the town of Richmond. So, come

and join us for submission and Donuts beginning

next Sunday.

Also, at the end of July, we'll be

having our vacation bible school taking place.

And if you can help, volunteer.

With that vacation Bible school, we invite you

to talk with Karen Rios, our, director of

children's

ministries.

All the other announcements you will find and

the inside of your Bulletin and also on

our website, and we invite you to check

that out and all that is happening in

the life of our church.

If the lord should mark our sins too

could stand, but with the Lord, there is

great forgiveness. Trusting

in the forgiveness and grace of God, let

us now confess our ends with our prayer

of common confession, and then our silent personal

confession. Let us pray.

Ends God of tender mercy.

We admit that sometimes

we don't know what to do with ourselves.

We anger at the slightest

insult

and imagine great vengeance

upon those who wrong us.

We lays about in the good news of

our faith

and do not consider the deep commitment of

faith.

We... Prepare for ourselves,

but not for others.

Forgive us we pray.

Forgive us,

help us to repent

and make us full.

Here now the good news.

Hope in the Lord. For with the lord,

there is steadfast love. With the lord, there

is power to redeem. Hope in the Lord

for dis God, who redeem all of our

sins. In the name of Jesus Christ, you

are forgiven.

Okay. You're close. It is like a water

bottle, but

I brought

Yeah. Yes. Asher like a juice bottle. I

bought some gatorade this morning, but it was

so hot that I needed to just

quench my thirst. And did you know that

gatorade, the slogan used to be, Gatorade is

the thirst quench.

You love that. He loves that. I do

too.

Well, let me say that. 1 of the

things that I love is how many of

you guys use sports.

Perfect. And by the way, dance is a

sport too.

Oh, okey. Good job. So when we do

sports we exert ourselves, and we get a

little bit thirsty, Right? How many of you

take water bottles with you wherever you go?

Good.

Alright? I know that I take my water

bottle because it's always good to stay hydrated,

and especially on a day like this.

So what if I told you

that

this 1 gatorade

would keep you from getting thirsty

again. Would you believe me?

Okay. They're shaking their heads up here. I

want you to know that. Okay. You would

be exactly correct. This 1 gatorade is not

gonna keep me from getting thirsty.

As a matter of fact, we're told to

keep on drinking water, right? Because we need

it.

But today, Pastor Pete is gonna talk about

a woman at the well.

And when she meets Jesus,

she gets so excited

because Jesus

tells her that she will never be thirsty

again.

So we know that physically,

we will have to drink. We're gonna have

to continue to drink water. We're gonna have

to continue to stay hydrated.

But when we come to Jesus Christ,

we know that our spiritual thirst

will be fulfilled. And we will never be

thirsty ever again. Isn't that pretty cool?

She got so excited that she went told

all of her friends, and they all came

to the well

to hear about Jesus and learn about how

to make sure that they could never be

thirsty.

That's pretty cool isn't it?

So the next time you drink a gatorade.

Remember that we might be physically thirsty, but

with Jesus, we will never thirst.

Let's pray.

And Dear Jesus.

Thank you for being.

Our living water.

That when we drink

drink from your cup.

We will never

thirst again. 30

Gracious God,

as we turn to your word for us,

may your spirit rest upon us,

help us to be steadfast in our hearing,

in our speaking

in our believing

and in our living.

Today's first scripture is from the book of

Mark,

Mark 7:24–30

chapter 7

verses 24

through 30.

You may find this in your Pew bible

on page 819.

Jesus journeys into a foreign.

Known today as Lebanon.

From there he set out, and he went

away to the region of Ty.

He entered a house,

but he didn't want anyone to know. He

was there.

Yet, he could not escape notice.

But a woman with an with a little

daughter had an uncle unseen spirit and she

immediately heard about him.

She came down and she bowed at his

feet.

Now the woman with a gentile

of sa

ar.

She begged him to cast the demon out

of her daughter.

He said to her,

let the children be fed first.

Ford's not fair to take the Children's food

and throw it to the dogs.

But she answered him

sir,

even the dogs under the table eat the

children's crumbs.

And then he said to her

for saying that,

you may go

The demon has left your daughter.

So she went home

and she found her child lying on the

bed.

And the demon was gone.

The word of God for the people of

God,

thanks be to God.

Our second reading for the morning comes from

the book of John reading in the fourth

chapter versus 27

through 38. And we invite you once again

to listen for the word of god.

Just then his disciples came, they were astonished

that he was speaking with a woman.

But no 1 said what do you want

or why are you speaking with her?

Then the woman left her water jar and

went back to the city?

She said to the people come and see

a man who told me everything I have

ever done.

He cannot be the messiah. Can he

They left the city and were on their

way to him and meanwhile.

The disciples were urging him rabbi eat something.

But he said to them I have food

to eat that you do not know about.

So the disciples said to 1 another, surely

no 1 has brought him something to eat.

Jesus said to them. My food

is to do the will of him who

sent me and complete his work.

Do you not say 4 months more then

comes the harvest, but I tell you look

around you and see how the fields are

ripe

for harvesting?

The reaper is already receiving wages and is

gathering fruit for eternal life so that the

sow and reaper may rejoice together.

For here the saying holds true.

1 sow and another reap, I sent you

to reap that for which you did not

labor.

Oh, they're labor

and you have entered into their labor.

This is the word of God for the

people of God.

Thanks speed to god.

Let us pray.

Lord God is your word is read, offered

and pro proclaimed this stay. It is our

prayer.

That you would speak to us that you

would give in us hungry hearts that would

year for your hope, your word, and your

power and your possibility.

It is in the name of Jesus that

we pray this day.

Hi, Steven mentioned this morning, we are continuing

our Sermon series about meeting Jesus at the

table. We recognize all the time. What happened

when somebody sat down with the meal with

Jesus

incredible, transfer transforming things happened. And as we

continue that, Let me ask you to ponder

and consider a time when you were just

intensely

hungry.

And I don't mean physical hunger.

Think about a time where there is something

that you just wanted and wanted badly.

Wanted intense. You're gonna do whatever it took

to get to that place.

Now for me,

I think about my teenage years when I

was

yearning to fly. I... My dad, we were

on vacation in Michigan 1 summer. And my

dad saw 1 of those signs on the

side of the road it said,

flight go flying, 5 dollars.

And my dad sprung 5 dollars, and he

and I got a little Ces nun and

took off. It was 1 of those 15

minute flights.

But the I was sitting in the front,

the pilots said, won't don't you fly for

a while, showed me how to fly, and

I will tell you when out those controls

were in my hands, I got the bug.

At 13 years old.

And I was gonna fly.

But the problem was flying is exorbitant

expensive. My parents didn't have any money. My

sisters were in college, but I went talk

to people. I talked to folks at airports.

I talked to people who are flight instructors.

And they'll all heads kind of a similar

theme to by young heart. They said something

like this. If you wanted bad enough, you'll

find a way.

And sure enough the years progressed, and I

sold just a year or 2 after I

got my driver's license is 16 years old.

Now to be fair, there are many people

around the world who are hungry.

Some physically,

some spiritually, hungry for something

And the truth is that all the hunger

in the world won't work if there is

not some sem

of resource.

In your reach. I I think of the

words of Larry Branch,

pastor Love Center Unity, 1 of our partner

churches it we had conversations throughout the years.

So 1 of the things I always remember

he said is, you know, you can't pull

yourself up by your own bootstrap.

If you don't have any boots.

And that's a whole another sermon and more...

And more to go there and there's truth

there.

But the truth also is that that when

there is some resource available to you,

some possibility.

It is amazing

the power of being hungry

to drive you and drive me towards our

goal.

Well, Opening up the scriptures this morning, there

are 2 stories

of hunger,

hunger

that was ultimately sat

in the person of Jesus

himself.

And we just read the stories of 2

foreign women.

Women who are outside the realm of faith

and culture

outside of the land. Now in our in

our first reading from the gospel of mark.

Jesus seems to be taking a break from

all the religious folks

in Jerusalem and in the region.

He's going international.

Intentionally leaving the area, and he's trying to

hide out in a home,

but there is a Greek woman or a

ser

woman it says in some translations.

Who is hungry.

And she tracks Jesus down in this house.

And she finds him because her daughter is

possessed by an imp

imp spirit.

And and she falls at his feet he

begs him for healing.

And then Jesus, and she enter into what

into right bible scholar, Into wright calls a

teasing

banter

as they talk about dogs and crumbs under

the table.

But even, but in all of that, she

demonstrates her hungry, her hunger.

You know, every

parent has understood the hunger for healing of

a child.

You're gonna do whatever takes.

But you see the conversation with Jesus reveals

a deeper yearning within her soul.

She's not there fighting for her rights

She's not speaking of her entitlement.

There is something deeper within her. Jesus sees

it and acknowledges it.

As she says, even a crumb left over

from the table of Jesus

will be enough.

And it is. You see she leaves full,

and she leaves satisfied. She lives fulfilled and

oh by the way, her daughter is also

healed.

And then we

move forward a couple chapters to the gospel

of John,

and there is the story of the Samaritan

woman. Now the metaphor here is not as

much hunger as it is thirst, but the

theme

is generally the same.

And she too has this witty

smart,

well informed

conversation pointed

conversation with Jesus.

And while she is at the well, but

Jesus and the conversation, it fills her. She

leaves her water jar there and that she

leads the whole town of samaritan, The hated

Samaritan

leads his whole town

to see Jesus. You see as such she

is 1 of the first if not the

first evangelist

in the scriptures.

You see, you have these 2 women,

both foreigners

who are acute examples of the power of

hunger and thirst

the crumbs under the table.

You know, this week, I was reading a

timely

story about some contemporary, but foreign

for hungry

seekers.

I was reading the story of a man

named Omar S,

and he is an immigrant who now serves

as missionary with a Missouri Baptist

convention. Number years ago, he became a Us

citizen, and now he works from the Southern

Baptist church. He works. As a missionary to

the immigrants

who are now coming across the border.

And, you know I recognize recognized especially this

week,

It is very difficult to speak about immigration

without raising all sorts of political

flags, but his point,

as he described his word,

as he reminded us that there is this

deep

spiritual hunger for the gospel

of the people who are coming across our

borders. And it's in part due to the

suffering that they have experienced

from their homes of origin that have driven

them to this point. And again, my point

is not policy nor is it politics.

But to name this fascinating

reality.

Because the point is that lots of spiritually

hungry people apparently

are entering into our nation rapidly.

I was also reading a a book this

week or next excerpt from a book of

by Doctor Robert Chow Romeo. He's a professor

of Chic in Chic chicago studies at Ucla.

He's in a book that's entitled Brown Church.

And he's there in that book and other

articles and blogs.

He says he reminds us as an established

church,

capital c,

that due to our decline in growth,

and due to the decline in birth rates

that we may very well could be replaced

by these folks and their children and their

grandchildren and their great grandchildren.

We could argue the point, but it does

make sense,

especially when you think about our text.

Foreigners,

who are spiritually hungry,

have a way of elicit the the passion

of Jesus

even when they're seeking crumbs under the table?

But what about us and you and me

and what about our hunger?

How do you and I compare with these

2 foreign women

who are at the table?

You know, lots of people have written about

this and and spoken about this.

And many if not most of the theologian

of the bible scholars would say, that you

and I really are hungry. We're born hungry

that our hunger is an innate thing inside

our souls.

Augustine famously said this

in a prayer to God. He said you

have made us for yourself o lord.

And our heart is restless

until it rests in you.

Founder of the Methodist Church John Wesley said

very much the same thing, although in a

different language.

He said that all of us have a

built in innate hunger, within us. Because that's

what it means to be made in the

image of God.

You were made

to have a relationship with God. That's part

of being God's image.

And so when that hunger rises up inside

of you for something more,

Wesley would say that's God's speaking. He would

say that's god's grace,

driving you. No a better word is God's

grace inviting you.

Into what you were meant to have in

the first place.

His point is that all of us were

born hungry

and only a relationship with God

can fill us in a sustained

way in this life and in the life

to come.

But here's problem.

We spend our time and effort trying to

sat

that holy hunger.

With lesser things in this life.

Pastor author John Piper said it this way.

He said, and I quote, the greatest enemy

of hunger for God

is not poison,

but Apple pie.

It's not the banquet of the wicked that

dole are appetite for heaven,

but endless n.

At the table of the world.

It's not the x rated video, but the

prime time dr dr of trivial.

We drink in every night.

He can continues to say, the greatest

adversary of love

to God

is not his enemies,

but his gifts.

Now we have spoken with some regular as

we should

about this about idol tree.

That idol tree is... Not the worship of

wood or stone statues so much.

Idol tree instead

is when good things.

It's become

ultimate things.

When good things become ultimate things.

Politics,

country,

relationship,

sex,

power,

money. The list goes on of things that

are innate neutral or good,

but things which

ultimately become ultimate for us.

And as such you see what happens,

our pursuit of those things are desire for

those things, they remove they discount the in

bread hunger for God within our souls, which

we are born with.

But we take just enough to get us

through the... Another day.

I don't know if you've been following news

in the last couple of weeks, but the

city of Los Angeles

has now approved a a policy

where students will not have access to their

cell phones

during the day.

Students are panicking parents are panicking even more.

But teachers and others have recognized that they...

The students simply can't focus on their learning

with all the just distractions which are on

the screen and are at their immediate

disposal.

Well, you and I know as all of

snow know that it's not just the students.

That's what we do.

We fill our bandwidth with all sorts of

things

and as we do. You see what happens?

We miss the crumbs under the table.

But in this we can also... We also

will be reminded in just a moment or

2.

Through a classic song, we're gonna sing about

this. In a in a minute or 2,

we're gonna sing that song seek first. You

know the Lyrics. Seek first, the kingdom of

God and his righteousness and all these things

will be given unto you, Hallelujah, Hallelujah.

We have sung that song for years, but

you know that song?

It's just

disciples ship 01:01. It's just Christianity 01:01.

We all have to do that song.

To find satisfaction

to our hunger.

We have to seek first the kingdom of

God.

And when we do that all these other

things fall into place. And so you know

what I we do. We talk about this

every week.

We develop patterns in our lives.

Habits in our lives, prayer, worship, bible study,

mission.

We do all these things. And what happens

is, we organize our lives, our patterns are

disciplined so that we are seeking the kingdom

first

and not letting all these other things fill

our available bandwidth. For

But we all have to do that. Right?

We all have to find ways in life

to make sure we're avoiding the drive throughs

of life.

So that we can sit down and enjoy

steak dinner or other with Jesus.

Because all this matters

because the story doesn't end with our hunger.

It certainly is themed around the women's hunger

for Jesus.

But don't forget.

These 2 stories are also

about Jesus is,

hunger

for them,

And by the way, for you and for

me.

It's fascinating to see how Jesus

applauded the wit

of these 2 women,

and her desire for the Crumbs under the

table,

But even more, look how Jesus spoke with

our disciples

in the second reading. Again, let me cast

the scene for you.

This woman is leading this crowd of Samaritan

perhaps up a hill towards Jesus. Remember these

are the hated samaritan, Either the foreigners, either

the outsiders.

And this woman at the well is leading

this whole... This whole group of people is

coming towards Jesus. And if you turn the

other side, there's a disciples next to Jesus.

And saying, rabbi, why don't you eat something?

And Jesus looks at these disciples in so

many words he says, are you kidding me?

Do you see what's happening here? The fields

are ripe for the, This crowd of people

that are coming our way?

The point is

that Jesus is telling them that this is

my food.

If I can do the will of God

and complete his work.

I am filled when hungry people come to

me, Jesus hunger is satisfied in a holy

way. When your hunger comes to him when

our hunger comes to him. And he says

that's enough to hold me.

See, that's a message. Jesus Christ loves

hungry

people,

both physically

and spiritually.

Jesus

holy hunger is satisfied

when you bring your heart, when you bring

your soul. When you bring your desire to

know him in a deeper way.

But we don't always see it that way,

Dewey. I mean, many of us perhaps grew

up with the wrong narrative, the wrong image

of God.

God would dis disappear. I could never please

him. God is not that interested in whatever

I have to bring to him.

But let me tell you a story to

which I'm praying and hoping that all of

you can relate

because 2 weeks ago was... Father's day. And

after Father's day, last son... 2 Sundays ago,

we all went out with my family, and

we were at there at a restaurant having

lunch is a great time and people gave

me cards, but I I will tell you

my favorite cards

came from my 3 grandchildren that happened to

be there for our lunch.

And you... I open up their cards. Is

very clear. My grandkids kids, they had spent

a good bit of time

doing writing these cards and drawing pictures.

In moving to think about how much time

they invested in all that. And when I

open up those cards and saw all the

time they put into it. And how excited

they were to give me those cards.

You know what? I didn't say?

I didn't look at these cards and all

the pictures that they had on there. Oh,

you know what?

I didn't say, oh those stick fingers are

a little too long.

I look at this card. I didn't look

at it's saying, oh, you know, those stick

figures the... The arms are out of proportion

to the legs. I didn't say that. Right?

I didn't open up those cards and say,

you know what, I really don't have blue

hair.

I didn't say that. Right?

But sometimes that's what you and I think

about God.

When we we see those samaritan coming up

the hill towards Jesus.

That God it's gonna be saying to samaritan...

Oh, that's not good.

You're not right.

You're not doing it right.

But this story begs to differ with that

narrative, wherever it came from in your life.

God

loves

a hungry heart.

God loves a heart that's looking just for

crumbs onto the table.

God passionately seeks those who seek him.

And when you come to him, breaking your

hunger and say that's all I got is

a hungry heart. God's holy hunger is satisfied.

To hear that? Because our god is

good.

I invite you to consider that and and

think about these things and to them

throughout the summer

because I will I would invite you to

cast your image 4 to a date coming

at the end of the summer, August 20

fifth.

That's gonna be what we call our launch,

Sunday.

We're gonna our our many of our youth

and children are gonna be back. There's gonna

be a lot of folks. Schools are kinda

starting before and after that weekend,

and we're gonna take that opportunity to kinda

get us in gear

for the coming fall.

And there's gonna be all sorts of do

things coming out in the fall. There's gonna

be new bible studies. There's gonna be opportunities

to sign up for music and for mission

and for volunteer

opportunities. That are all gonna be there. We're

gonna try to put those out on the

20 fifth and invite you to prayer consider

being a part of it.

The point is if you're not in a

small group, if you're not, able to volunteer

in certain places right now. If you're not

in a sunday school class in the morning

to come on.

We would love to have you sign up,

and there'll be the opportunity to do that.

Particularly in the fall.

But in the meantime, I invite you throughout

the summer and as prepared for that day

to not forget what we have learned this

day.

You and I are given a hundred we're

born with a hungry heart that will only

find full satisfaction

in the person of Jesus Christ.

And Jesus

is also hungry, but hungry for you. And

for me to seek that deeper place with

him. As we used make our way through

these summer weeks and prepare for the fall.

Let us not forget that truth.

In the name of the father and the

son, and the holy spirit.

Oh amen.

In response to the word proclaimed, let us

seek first the kingdom of God through our

singing of him number 04:05.

Where the spirit of the Lord is, there

is 1 true church

apostolic in universal, whose holy faith let us

now declare.

We believe in god father,

infinite in wisdom, power and love.

Whose mercy is over all his works.

And whose will is ever directed to his

children's good.

We believe in Jesus Christ

son of God and son of man,

the gift of the father's un grace,

the ground of our hope,

in the promise of our deliverance from sin

and death.

We you believe in the holy spirit

as the divine presence in our lives?

Whereby we are kept in perpetual remembrance

of the truth of Christ

and find strength and help in time of

need.

We believe that this faith should manifest

itself in the service of love,

set forth in the example of our blessed

lord.

To the end that the kingdom of God

become upon the earth,

amen.

Use

satisfy

the hungry,

reward,

with

life.

Dear friends, let us close our eyes,

let us clear our minds

and go to the lord and prayer.

Lord God, first and foremost wolfe. If we

want thank you for this day. The beautiful

day that you have made. And for all

of us here who have come together yet

again to worship you and gather together in

Christian fellowship.

On this day, Lord, we thank you for

all that you do for us, for all

the way that you love us that you

see us.

And that you value us.

We thank you, Lord for seeing our areas

of hunger and thirst.

We thank you for seeing us for who

we are and shaping us into who you

are making us to be.

Lord, we would be remiss.

If we didn't mention those who have not

heard the good news of the gospel,

those who are still thirst and those who

are still hungry for your love for your

compassion,

for your truth, for your grace and for

your mercy,

for your justice and for your righteousness.

Help our neighbors lord, help our neighbors who

have yet to see you to hear you

to feel you and experience you and help

us as the church continue to find a

way to reach them and satisfy

their hungry hearts.

Do

Lord, we pray unto you,

and we give you thanks.

At this time, Lord, we wanna to take

a quick moment.

To share all the prayer on our heart's

mind and spirits on these days,

in silence,

Lord God

hear our prayers.

Hear our prayers and help us to seek

first your kingdom and help us to invite

others to do the same.

Help us to invite the foreigner.

Help us to invite the stranger,

help us to invite the poor to sick

the needy of the out cast and all

those to come and join us at the

table,

help us to grow more in our mission

of disciples ship and help us to continue

to grow your kingdom on earth as in

heaven. We lift up our voices and prayer

to you in the name of your son,

Jesus Christ the 1 who taught us to

pray and given us these words and said.

Our father,

who are in heaven,

hall b thy name,

that kingdom come,

thy will be done

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day, our daily bread

and forgive us our tres passes

as we forgive those who tres against us

and lead us not in the temptation

but deliver us from evil,

for thin is the kingdom

and the power and the glory forever.

Amen. Friends let us continue in our time

of works together by giving our gifts back

to god.

Let us pray.

God, once again, we thank you for this

day, and we thank you for an opportunity

to give the gift that you've given unto

to us back to you.

Lord help us at revel church.

Help us with our partner churches and help

us all as the church universal.

2, discern how we can best seek your

kingdom first and invite others to do the

same. Remembering that all of us have a

seat at the table with Jesus.

Let the by prayers voice to you and

the name of your son Jesus just Christ.

And the people of god all said.

love to invite our youth mission team to

come up to the front join me.

I

prayers ask for more prayers. And I also

want to thank everyone for the last 3

years. For their,

financial support, we have never had to worry

about making enough money or whether a or

not a certain student K k afford to

ago go. We've always been able to provide

for everyone, even students who sign up the

last minute, and that is such a blessing

I cannot tell you how much of a

blessing that is.

This year, we will be going to Charleston,

South Carolina, and we will be working with

several different groups of people. 1 will be

working in seniors,

in different capacities. Some of these seniors just

need a little bit of help

working doing some yard work, painting,

other projects that they weren't done around their

house that they could physically cannot do themselves,

we'll also be working with seniors in nursing

homes

through different types of social activity singing with

them, leading them in music.

Playing games with them, painting their nails,

playing Bingo,

just hanging out with seniors and being that

the hands and feet of Christ there, and

we'll also be helping out with different types

of V s style camps,

we'll be working out with,

other students in a sports camp,

which leads them to Jesus.

And we are just so excited for this

year's mission Trip. Again, thank you so much

for your prayers. We ask that you continue

to pray. For us, and thank you so

much for your support in all the different

ways that you have supported us and k

will continue to support us And I also

just wanna to thank my amazing leaders. Several

have been on several different trips such as

I was like, there's 6 adults going. So

Bless their work, that it would make a

difference, a difference in their lives, and a
