Sermon Series: “At the Table with Jesus” | Sermon: “A Holy Meal”

Well, good morning, everyone.

Friends welcome to rev, not a methodist of

church. My name is Bio Hogan, and I'm

1 of the associate pastors here. And I'm

so glad you all have made a time

to come out and join us on this

Sunday. Whether you're in person or online, I'm

happier you're here.

Before we get things started of a worship

this morning, I've got a couple I wanna,

bring your attention to. The first thing is

that today, we will be continuing our Sermon

series of at the table with Jesus and

Our lead pass through the reverend doctor Pete

Moon will be sharing a great message about

the holy meal. We'll be talking a lot

about comm and what it means to be

an open table type of church.

And speaking of comm today is a comm

Sunday. So fairness is whether you are online,

or I wanna make I direct your attend

to online,

make sure that you get your bread and

your cup ready because we will be sharing

a time of comm here in person, so

we hope that'll be a good time for

you all as well.

And then most importantly, or 1 of the

most important things is next Sunday, we will

be having a listening survey for... Or a

listening session for the

Lgbtq including survey that we've been talking about

for the last couple of months. It'll be

4PM next Sunday in our chapel, So we

hope as you will be in attendance with

us for that. It'll be a really important

conversation for us as lovely church to discern

where we all are in the midst of

all the things going on in our world.

Most holy and gracious lord.

Long ago, you walked with your disciples,

broke the bread and open their eyes.

This morning, as we gather in worship

and at your table,

we humbly ask that you do that again.

As you spoke with the disciples long ago,

speak to us

that we too might offer our hearts

and voices

enjoy, and praise,

So I thought that today we would talk

about a very special holiday

called Thanksgiving,

but I couldn't bring a big old turkey

up with me.

Does anybody like Turkey?

What are your favorite thanksgiving day

dishes?

Why don't I, okay, go for it Leo?

Okay pumpkin pie. That's like the 1 thing

I forgot in our earlier service.

But does anybody like raise your hands if

you like turkey?

Oh, good.

Ham?

Mac and cheese.

Mashed potatoes?

Chicken

Chicken,

I love it.

And, Leo, you're raising a good point because

I know that when my daughter visits with

her Puerto Rican family,

they do rice and beans.

And that is something that is a tradition

for them.

Yes, Henry?

This is my mic

because I don't have a pocket today.

They catch everything don't they. Isn't that awesome?

So

1 of the things I wanted to make

sure that we discussed the about thanksgiving is

a fact Thanksgiving is a time for families

gather.

It's a time that maybe your parents will

sit and talk about what happened in the

olden days. I'm gonna try this again back

when God said, let there be light.

Man, they still didn't get it.

Alrighty.

But it's a time to share memories.

It's a time to talk about

how we get together as families.

Today, Pastor Pete is gonna talk about comm.

And it was a time when Jesus that's

right. You can take a look behind you

at the elements

under the

Napkins is bread and wine. And that was

a time when Jesus met

with his family, his disciples, they broke bread.

And 1 of the things that he said

was remember

He knew that he was gonna be going

away for a little while, and he wanted

them to remember that time of family.

And I guarantee that 1 day

you'll be with your families, and you're gonna

be talking about

how you are remembering the times that you

spent with your family at your Thanksgiving.

The same way.

Let's pray.

Heavenly father,

thank you for the gift of Jesus

Thank you

And for the gift of comm.

That reminds us to remember

my

to remember The life of Jesus Christ.

Jesus

Please join me in praying the prayer for

illumination.

Calm us now o lord into a quiet

that heals

and listens.

Open wounded hearts to the balm of your

word.

Speak to us in clear tones,

so that we might feel less spirit's leap

for joy and skip with hope as your

resurrection witnesses.

Our first scripture reading is from first corinthians

1 Corinthians 11 · chapter mention

chapter 11 versus 17 through 22.

And may be found on page 933

of your Pew bible.

Paul corrects Christians at Cor for their behavior

at holy Comm.

Now in the following instructions, I do not

commend you

because when you come together, it is not

for the better, but for the worse.

For to begin with, when you come together

as a church,

I hear that there are divisions among you.

And to some extent, I believe it.

Indeed, there have to be factions among you,

For only so, will it become clear, who

among you are genuine?

When you come together, it is not really

to eat the lord suffer?

But when the time comes to eat, each

of you goes ahead with your own supper

and 1 goes hungry and another comes becomes

drunk.

What?

Do you not have homes to eat and

drink in?

Or do you show contempt for the church

of God and humiliate those who have nothing?

What should I say to you? Should I

command you? In this matter, I do not

command you.

Forever Received from the Lord when I also

handed on to you

that the lord Jesus on the night when

he was betrayed took c loaf bread,

and when he had given thanks he broke

it and said, this is my body that

is for you, do this and remembrance of

me.

In the same way he took the cup,

also after suffer saying this cup is the

new covenant and my blood.

Do this as often as you drink it

in remembrance of me.

For as often as you eat the spread

and drink the cup, you pro the Lord's

death until he comes.

Whoever, therefore eats the bread or drinks the

cup of the lord in an un manner

will be answer for the body and blood

of the Lord.

Examine yourselves, and only then eat of the

bread and drink of the cup.

For all who aid and drink without discerning

the body, eat and drink judgment against themselves.

For this reason, many of you are weak

in ill and some have died,

But if we judged ourselves, we would not

be judged.

But when we are judged by the lord,

we are disciplined

so that we may not be condemned along

with the world,

the word of God, for the people of

God. Thanks, be to God.

Our second reading for the morning comes from

the story in the 20 fourth chapter of

Luke.

As 2 disciples are making their way to

and from

Emma am. We'll be reading portions of

that,

reading this morning.

Again, Luke 24, starting with the thirteenth first.

Now on that same day, 2 of them,

we're going to a village called Emma,

about 7 miles from Jerusalem

and talking with each other about all these

things that had happened and while they were

talking and discussing Jesus himself came near

and went with him,

but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

And he said to them what are you

discussing with each other while you walk along,

they stood still looking sad

Than 1 of them whose name was Cl,

answered him, are you the only stranger in

Jerusalem?

Who does not know these things that have

taken place there in these days.

Yes, and what things. They replied the things

about Jesus of Nazareth.

Who was a prophet, mighty indeed and word

before our God and all the people.

And how our chief priests and leaders handed

him over to be condemned to death and

crucified him,

but we had hoped

that he was the 1 to redeem Israel.

Yes. And besides all this, it is now

the third day since these things took place

and continuing now with first 28.

As they came near the village to which

they were going. He walked ahead as if

he were going on, but they urged him

strongly saying,

stay with us because it is almost evening

and day is now nearly over.

So he went in to stay with him,

when he was at the table with him,

He took bread, blessed and broke it and

gave it to them, then their eyes were

opened,

and they recognized him. And he vanished from

their site.

They said to each other were not our

hearts burning within us. While he was talking

to us on the road, while he was

opening the scriptures to us.

That same hour. They got up and returned

to Jerusalem. They found the 11 and their

companions gathered together. They were saying the Lord

has risen indeed and he has impaired impaired

to Simon.

Then they told what had happened on the

road.

And how he had been made known to

them

in the breaking of the bread.

This is the word of God for the

people of God.

Thanks, Be to God.

Let us pray.

Lord this day is your word is proclaimed.

It is our prayer

that you would break the bread of your

word.

Enable us to see you, understand you and

take hold of your grace and power this

day not only in this time of preaching.

But also at this your holy table because

we ask it through Christ Jesus, our lord.

Amen.

Well, friends as Bio mentioned, we are continuing

a sermon series

entitled at the table with Jesus. Each week

we're take some time to sit down with

Jesus at the table,

recognizing the transform from transforming things that occur

in those occasions with Jesus.

And this morning, on this first Sunday of

July, we come to the table, the comm

table with Jesus.

To speak about what all this means and

how we have yet hope in the midst

of it all.

You know? And several years ago, there was

a survey that was offered by our, United

Methodist Church. They took a took a survey

of methodist and what we thought about comm.

And a couple things came out of that

survey. 1 was that we know that there

was a very something very important, very powerful.

Happens here at this sac.

But there was an equally a valid,

discernment that we also struggled to understand the

deeper meaning

of what happens here at the table. We

understand that there is power here,

but we're not sure we understand that power,

and you might remember we asked you for

these last couple weeks to take some time

and send some stories

into me. And I have appreciated reading those

stories and we're gonna speak more about those

in just a few moments.

But what's clear is that is you described

your experience, you have experienced power here at

the table. You have experienced a certain transcend

here at the table.

As you remembered,

Your experience is here.

I invite you to hold on to that

word.

Remember.

Because that word is them to r 2

readings, and it is certainly them schematic

to the what we do here at the

table

We say in fact, it's the common phrase

in our... In our comm literature, but also

printed we're engraved on the front of many

a comm table at many a church where

it says, do this in remembrance of me.

See, we come to this table and we

remember, but let me highlight from the beginning

that our remembrance is not just an

intellectual

exercise.

See. We remember here

what Christ did.

But also we remember that just as happened

at Em long ago,

that somehow

mysteriously

Within these elements, the risen Christ is actually

present.

Somehow,

some way in these elements, Jesus Christ is

right here

today. And as we experienced him and as

we participate.

So let's just take a few moments to

unpack

this word remember together through 3 things

that we recall here at the table. So

that we too like the folks from Emma

can leave today in a renewed way after

the breaking

of the bread.

And as we remember, let's jump into the

stories, the the accounts with a bit of

can.

See, at this table,

we remember

that we are

sinner.

At this table, we are reminded that you

and I, all of us. We are are

broken

people. We are people at this table. We

remember

that we do not

have it all together. I mean, that's 1

of the points of that reading from Paul's

letter to the Corinthians. See. Paul is addressing

some messed up church people.

And their actions around the table. He is

correcting their their practice.

See, some background on that in cor, there

is this division

between the rich

and the poor

Apparently, the rich didn't have to work all

day. They could come to the meal early.

They could eat and drink in a leisure

way. They had the means to use Paul's

words they had the means to get drunk.

So they would spend some time eating and

drinking

when the working poor

words came in late.

See the working poor it, they couldn't afford

recreational time.

So they could finally... They come late in

the day and there's nothing left.

Now that was the norm for Roman culture

of the day.

The wealthy

likely didn't see this as any big deal.

But Paul reminds them that the view of

things have changed in the church.

Distinctions

have been removed

in Jesus.

So what he's saying is, look, your gatherings

at the Lord's table, they don't reflect this

new understanding, this new age, this new vision

we have around the table around Jesus.

And therefore, you're gathering he says, are doing

more harm than good.

Some of you might remember the way we

used to do comm many, many years ago.

We would have individual tables and we come

forward, and there would be plates of square

pieces of bread. Y'all remember that? Growing up.

Remember, we used to have,

individual comm cups, and we sit down and

knee them partake individually and all of that.

And that was...

A great thing, but, we have changed that

of late and we've changed it for a

reason.

See, in general, we have 1 cup. In

general,

we have 1 loaf, and there's a point

of all that.

See we partake of the 1 loaf and

the 1 cup,

together. Now granted there are health concerns. We

understand all that, but it's also here to

make a point.

See, we all receive different people that we

are.

We received together.

We're different cultures. We're from different social statuses.

We're from different genders stories. The list goes

on and on but see what happens is

at this table,

the things that distinguish us ideally

sort of dissolve away around the elements.

As we're gathered around the body and the

blood of Jesus.

Now the Corinthians church struggle with that 2000

years that if we're honest, go. And if

we're honest,

we still struggle with it today.

But see prayer, today, we can remember who

and whose we are as we gather around

this table.

And we're gonna say more about this in

just a few minutes, but this is also

in part

why we as methodist

celebrate what we call an open table.

Just a reminder that some denomination require you

to be baptized. Some require you to be

a member. Some have other conditions.

And as Methodist, you can see, we have

words of invitation which encourage and invite you

to think very seriously

about what it means to partake of the

elements. All that is true.

And at the same time, when somebody comes

forward, pretty much no matter what We're not

gonna turn anybody away from the sacramento.

The point is that when we come to

the table, we welcome

everybody,

become forward.

Except

the people who are perfect.

The people who have have it all together.

The truth is you and I need to

be messed up

to be here at Comm or at least

admit

that we are messed up.

In comm, we're reminded that there are no

vacancies

in the tri We don't need to apply

for that. We're not qualified. And we struggling

folks who are down here living life.

We're wrestling out, but we can do that

because those who do fill the Trinity,

father, son, holy spirit.

They are full of grace.

And they dispense grace.

Grace is how the Trinity works that gives

you forgiveness and me for forgiveness in power

for a new day. And so we remember

at this table,

we are all

sinner.

And that brings us to the second thing

that we remember right in this place.

We remember

that Jesus Christ died for us.

Jesus died for us.

And when you listen to the the story

of those disciples,

walking on that road to a mass with

the unrecognized

Jesus, that was the deal. Right? They did

not remember.

They didn't remember all the things that Jesus

had said to them. They didn't remember all

the things the prophets and the scriptures had

spoken of. They could not fathom a messiah.

That had to die

for them.

But then Jesus speaks clearly.

And he reminds them

that this is the deal.

This is the way God has chosen to

redeem you and me, the way God has

chosen to heal the world,

and we may be a bit uncomfortable with

the direct and the death of Jesus. But

Paul wouldn't,

in our reading from first Corinthians, he said

it this way.

For whenever you eat this bread and drink

this cup.

You pro

the Lord's death

until he comes.

You know there have been times over the

years where folks will ask me why it

is that you methodist us never have alter

calls. Right? Times where people come forward after

the sermon, make AAA

decision, a a faith this decision and certainly

over the years, I've done my number and

my share of those. But what I also

remind folks is that ideally,

every time we come to comm. Every time

you and I come forward to comm and

receive,

that really is an altar call.

As Paul said, when we we gathered the

Lord's table, we are proclaiming

the Lord's death. We are proclaiming the gospel

of Jesus Christ

right here at the table

and giving people folks

an opportunity to give folks an opportunity to

respond.

You know I was reading a a good

correction to our old lit this week. You

know, I don't know if you remember the

old,

reading of comm lit. We used to say,

on the night that Jesus was betrayed, he

took bread and broke it. Right?

And the illusion of course is to J

and being betrayed by J.

But a lot of, more contemporary scholars and

have looked at the Greek and said there's

There's a much better way to read that,

and it has been incorporated

into our that we current currently use where

it says on the night when God handed

Jesus over for our sins.

Right?

It reminds us about the gospel.

And there's this pivotal key moment in the

whole service when the provider lifts up the

bread

and breaks it.

When the provider lifts up the cup

and reminds us that this is the blood

of Christ. See, we believe that when we

do that,

we are pro claiming the gospel. And the

open table gives each of us the opportunity

to come forward and receive. You know, the

servers are right up here up front.

And when they hand you that piece of

bread, and you dip it in the cup,

they are... The the risen Christ is saying

I love you.

I forgive you. I have given myself for

you.

Every time.

And when you and I come with our

hands forward,

Our hands fold open and receive that bread

in our hands. We are saying to the

risen living

Christ.

I receive your love.

That's what happens. It's a reminder of who

we are. It's a proclamation of the gospel

and an opportunity for you and To spawn

in a renewed way each time we come

to the table.

Things happening in this place. I remember story

years ago. I was at another congregation. When

for 5 years, this congregation worship

at C high school. 5 years of that.

And, you know what, you get a very

different crowd of people in church when you

worship in a high school auditor.

And we were at the a service on

the very first Sunday of the New year.

And we had that Wesley

covenant service if you all have the experience

that server services very

traditional.

It and we, offer an opportunity for people

to make a covenant with God with traditional

language,

Strong words, put me to what that will.

Put me to suffering. I am not my

own, but yours. The list goes on.

And then after we all seal that come...

Say that covenant together,

we seal it by receiving holy comm.

Well we did that as we have done

for many years. And after the service was

over, I was making my way out and

a young woman came up to me and

approached me, and she told me her story.

She told me that she had been an

avid atheist

for many, many years.

Hadn't been to church in many years, had

never received community before, but she felt the

call.

And she came forward that day and received

comm for the very first time. It was

transformative.

She and her husband then joined the church

they became leaders in our children's ministry for

many years.

So you can't remember that.

When you and I are here, when we

break that bread and lift up the cup,

we are proclaiming the Lord's death, proclaiming the

gospel.

And when you and I come forward, we

are responding.

Every week to the gospel.

But let me tell you 1 more thing

that we remember when we gather around this

table. We remember

that there is hope.

We remember that there is hope.

Remember what we say in those words will

we call the words of institution. We raise

our hands over these elements. And we say

these words pour out your holy spirit upon

these gifts of bread and wine.

Make them be for us the body and

blood of Christ that we may be for

the world. The body of Christ redeemed by

his blood.

We hear those words all the time, but

you hear the core of those words?

It's all about change.

It's all about transformation. We're asking god to

change this bread and wine, make them be

for us the body and blood of Christ.

We're asking God to change us through these

gifts of bread and wine. And then we're

asking God to change the world through us.

You see

it's like ripples the spear from these elements,

radiating out through us into the world so

that we might be a kingdom change

representing the love and hope of Jesus.

And that what happened in the story,

The disciples are walking along

down cast, not doing well on their way

to Emma am, but suddenly,

when the bread was broken,

see what happened?

There

was

hope.

I don't know if you noticed or heard

the initial

conversation

that the disciples had with Jesus.

And speaking of their time with Jesus, they

said, and note the tents of the verb,

They said, we had

hoped.

And they went on to describe their disappointment.

In the death of Jesus and

the circumstances,

we had

hoped.

But then, of course, Jesus

stayed.

Jesus broke the bread,

and their eyes were open. And now everything

changes.

They are running back to jerusalem with exuberance

because Jesus did die for them because Jesus

Christ is alive. Now in their actions in

their souls and their lives, there is hope,

you see what happened when Jesus broke the

bread,

he changed the tents of the verb.

He changed, we had hoped

into

we have

hope

That's a lot to ask

for the breaking of the bread.

But I gotta tell you in reading through

your stories that you sent in.

That's what happened to you at this table.

You know, some of you told me the

story of how special it was when you

stood right here or other places and served

the elements to people.

And you watch them, come forward. You watch

them come forward with open hands, you watched

them as they knee at the rail

in an intimate comm with Christ

that there was power in that and seeing

the

transformation of what happens right here at this

table. Some of you told about the times,

you knelt the rail after comm.

And how you experienced the sort of

transformation, an experience of hope in all of

that. Another 1 of you told me a

story this week.

About a wedding that was held here. And

it was 1 of those weddings that was

very complicated. Was a wedding where multiple different

faith backgrounds,

folks who are non Christian, people who are

trying to gather around, trying to put a

service together that work for everybody and there

was an all around, but the decision was

made in the wedding to have comm as

a part of the service.

And in a wonderful way, that's the story

said,

folks found a way to gather in Unity.

Non Christians, Jews, who had never received comm

received it and found hope and power the

stuff of which we speak right here today.

Anxiety in a wedding was trans form to

Unity

right here at the table.

Let me tell you 1 more story. So

years ago, I was again at another congregation,

but,

we were

there at an even... A Saturday evening service

with relatively large service, and the kids were

singing in this particular

service. Now, this particular grandmother who came, She

would she didn't wanna be there.

She was frustrated with her denomination because she

had not being able to have comm for

decades.

And as a result, she hadn't been in

church in years, and she was only there

aaron and she made it clear to me.

She was the only there because her granddaughter

was singing that day that night. And we

do what we always do. We

preach the word. We

offered the sac

But I will tell you God spoke to

her

in that service.

And she couldn't believe it. When we'd say,

well, we always it. We have an open

table. You are all here no matter what?

What's your circumstances we invite you to come.

Now, we... Just what we say... She heard

it for the first time in decades,

And I got tell. She almost shot up,

to come forward to receive the bread and

the wine.

You see what happened? That night in the

breaking of the bread.

Decades of frustration with the church was redeemed.

We had hoped,

became we have hope.

And you I will tell you the the...

Just to continue that story.

Couple months later, she joined the church.

A couple years after that, she came on

the staff of that church. A couple years

after that, she came became the associate pastor

of that church.

And over the last years, so I have...

She has since tired, but, my I participated

in a few funerals with her,

in the last year or So and I

got gotta tell you every time she preach

she knocks it out of the park.

Such as the power

when we like Jesus break the bread,

and have our eyes open.

Friends were gonna come to the table now

in just a moment, but

let us also pray

that the verb tense in our life today

will be changed. Some of you going through

all sorts of stuff.

Our country going through all sorts of stuff.

Our world's going through all sorts of stuff.

That that side of the verb, the the

story we had hoped

it's easy

for that to be them in our lives

in our world. We had hoped. So that

while we're doing is managing our disappointment.

But what if it's really true?

What if even today has happened at Mas,

when we break the bread, the tense of

the verb changes

so that we're not saying we had hope.

We have come over to this side and

we'll say, we have hope.

I don't know what you're facing today.

I don't know what you're dealing with today.

But, you know, Jesus did it for those

disciples in Maze 2000 years ago. I'm pretty

sure. He can do it again today As

you and I come forward to remember

that in the person of Jesus Christ,

there is no place

where there is no hope Let's hold on

to that. In the name of the father,

and of the son and of the holy

spirit.

Let us pray.

Oh, gracious God. We thank you for this

day.

We remember this day of lord that you

are the creator of this world.

That you created each of us and breathe

into us, the breath of life.

And when our love fails and we turn

away it is your a love. That remains

steadfast.

We remember this day, Oh god your son

Jesus Christ.

Who died for all of us.

We remember

how he ate with sinner

fed the hungry

and heal the sick.

We remember this day oh God, your holy

spirit.

Who is our helper,

our encourage

and our friends.

We remember you this day oh God, father

son and Holy spirit, and we give you

thanks for the gift of this table.

We give you thanks for the gift of

this table where you are present where we

can find you.

Where there is love,

where there is mercy,

where there is grace,

and we give you thanks for this table

that does indeed unite all of us

together.

We pray the stay of lord for anyone

who is sick in any way in mind,

body or spirit, or for those who may

be grieving any sort of loss.

And we pray for their, strength

and healing

and comfort and for peace.

We give you thanks this weekend for our

country, and for all the good gifts that

we are blessed to have here.

And especially we give you thanks for the

gift of freedom.

We pray that you would find ways to

bring our country together to unite us in

the midst of so many differences that we

have that you would help us.

As a country,

do not seek our own self interest, but

to seek the good and the welfare of

all people.

We pray for the world around us.

We pray for those who may be dealing

with the aftermath of hurricanes

and

natural disasters.

We pray for all those around the world.

We may be without shelter,

we're air conditioning

or food or water in the midst of

this oppressive heat.

We give you thanks for our church, and

we pray for our youth mission trip that

has left this morning to go to Charleston.

We pray for their, safe travels and blessings

in their

ministry in Charleston.

And we pray for our Honduras mission team

that leads this upcoming Saturday

that you would also give them safe travels.

And bless all that they say and all

that they do in Honduras.

You pray for our partner churches in Swan,

Quan

community church and love Center of unity.

And we lift all these prayers up to

you this day of God.

And now in the silence of our hearts,

we lift up to you any personal concerns

that we may have.

Here our here our prayers the stay o

lord as we lift all of them to

you in the name of Jesus Christ our

Lord.

As we continue to respond to the word

red and proclaimed, I invite our usher to

come forward that we may give back to

god. Our ties and our offerings this stay.

So

I invite you to turning your him to

page 12 that we may share in holy

comm together.

Christ our lord invites to his table,

all who love him.

Earnest repent of their sin

and seek to live in peace with 1

another.

Therefore, let us confess our sin before God

and 1 another.

Mer God,

we confess that we have not loved you

with our whole heart

we have failed to be in obedient church.

We have not done your will.

We have broken your law.

We have rebelled against your love.

We have not loved our neighbors,

and we have not heard the cry of

the needy.
