  71. we dismiss your joy.

  72. Our sour

  73. dispositions

  74. represent our culture,

  75. instead of your character,

  76. by your grace,

  77. remind us of your goodness

  109. and it was a pleasure seeing 65

  110. children from kindergarten

  111. through rising second graders come to learn about

  112. about God, and ent him. Do any of

  113. you remember your scripture? Whenever,

  114. I'm afraid.

  115. That's it. Psalm,

  116. abs absolutely. Whenever I'm afraid I put my

  117. trust in use some 56 3.

  118. And so we enjoyed having a wonderful time,

  119. not just learning about up, but doing some

  120. singing and some moving, and we wanted to

  121. present this piece for you today. So Welcome

  122. to Vacation Bible school.

  123. CAMP,

  124. fire red like G.

  125. Come on now See hey, m pete fire,

  126. and like.

  127. Let me here now see hey deep fire.

  128. Break down.

  129. Alrighty.

  130. Oh, no. Thank you so much for enjoying

  131. that wonderful

  132. presentation. Children, you guys can go back and

  133. sit with your parents.

  134. And we thank you so much for allowing

  135. your children to be with us past week.

  136. Please join me in praying the prayer for

  137. illumination.

  138. Lord

  139. open our hearts and minds

  140. by the power of your holy spirit

  141. that as the scriptures are read

  142. and your word proclaimed.

  143. Hear you with joy what you say it

  144. to us today.

  145. Ami amen.

  146. Today's first scripture reading is from the book

  147. of Philippians,

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  148. chapter 1 versus 1 through 11.

  149. This may be found on page 953

  150. of your pew Bible.

  151. Paul expresses love to the church at Philip

  152. in Greece.

  153. The first congregation he founded on the European

  154. continent.

  155. Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus.

  156. To all the saints in Christ Jesus who

  157. are in Philip high

  158. with the bishop and dea.

  159. Grace to you, and peace from God, our

  160. father in the lord Jesus Christ.

  161. I thank my god every time I remember

  162. you, constantly praying with joy. In every 1

  163. of my prayers for all of you because

  164. of your sharing in the gospel from the

  165. first day until now.

  166. I am confident of this.

  167. That the 1 who began a good work

  168. among you will bring it to completion by

  169. the day of Jesus Christ.

  170. It is right for me to think this

  171. way about all of you because you hold

  172. me in your heart. For all of you

  173. share in god's grace with me, both in

  174. my imprisonment,

  175. and in the defense and

  176. confirmation of the gospel.

  177. For God is my witness,

  178. how I long for all of you with

  179. the compassion of Christ Jesus.

  180. And this is my prayer that your love

  181. may overflow, more and more with knowledge and

  182. full insight to help you determine what is

  183. best.

  184. So that on the day of Christ, you

  185. may be pure and blame.

  186. Having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes

  187. through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise

  188. of God.

  189. The word of God for the people of

  190. god.

  191. Thanks speed to god.

  192. You know, as we mentioned earlier, today, we

  193. are beginning the Sermon series on joy, and

  194. I'm I'm half tempted to say after those

  195. kids saying. And after Daniel, you'd led us

  196. in that joe, we could just kinda drop

  197. the microphone at this point.

  198. But where there's more to be said, And

  199. we're gonna turn to the fourth chapter, of,

  200. the book of Philippians as we listen to

  201. Paul's words speaking to us

  202. about the wonder and the power and the

  203. possibility

  204. of joy even today. Invite you to hear

  205. these words starting in the fourth verse.

  206. Rejoice in the lord always. Again, I will

  207. say

  208. rejoice.

  209. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The

  210. Lord is near.

  211. Do not worry about anything, but in everything

  212. by prayer and sup simplification and with Thanksgiving.

  213. Let your requests be made known to God.

  214. And the peace of God which surpasses all

  215. understanding will guard your hearts in your minds.

  216. In Christ Jesus.

  217. Finally, beloved.

  218. Whatever is true.

  219. Whatever is honorable.

  220. Whatever is just,

  221. whatever is pure,

  222. whatever is pleasing, whatever's is commendable, if there

  223. is any excellence and if there is anything

  224. worthy of praise,

  225. Think

  226. about these things.

  227. Keep on doing the things you have learned

  228. and received and heard and seen in me,

  229. and the god of peace will be with

  230. you.

  231. This is the word of God for the

  232. people of God.

  233. Thanks speed to God.

  234. Will you pray with me?

  235. Lord God, we give you thanks this, Dave

  236. for our vacation bible school for their smiles,

  237. for their laughter or for the joy that

  238. radiates from their souls.

  239. And it is our prayer that as your

  240. word is open and pro proclaimed that we

  241. can continue this testimony that there is yet

  242. possibility in a challenging world.

  243. That we can be living vessels of this

  244. joy of which we speak. Open your word

  245. to us today and speak to each and

  246. every 1 of us.

  247. Before we ask it through Christ Jesus our

  248. Lord.

  249. I'm amen.

  250. Well, like we said, we're beginning this summer

  251. sir... The second part of our summer sermon

  252. series on joy, on this Sunday as we

  253. begin the week. This is also the week

  254. where we will be beginning the 20 24

  255. summer

  256. Olympics. And to kinda bring all that together,

  257. I was reading a story this week

  258. about Jim Caitlin Or.

  259. And I think she can help us get

  260. started with us. Now, Caitlyn is not going

  261. to be in the upcoming

  262. Olympics. Though at 1 point, Caitlyn, was considered

  263. the best gym ness in the world, finishing

  264. even ahead of simone bile.

  265. It's a fascinating story which I saw on

  266. Npr this week or heard on Npr this

  267. week.

  268. She started out very young,

  269. but she got caught up sort of in

  270. the gym

  271. machine. It was all work and pain in

  272. progress and

  273. evaluation and competition. So she just pulled out

  274. for a season.

  275. But then she encountered the gym coach from

  276. Ucla,

  277. Valerie Condos field or better known as Coach

  278. Val.

  279. And Coach fell approached her, and she asked

  280. her when was the last time

  281. you actually loved gymnastics.

  282. And Caitlyn went back and basically said, I

  283. think that was back when I was 11

  284. years old.

  285. It's been... And since that point, she had

  286. just been kinda grinding it out. So Coach

  287. Val decided she need to treat her as

  288. a human being, recognize your value as a

  289. human before being an athlete.

  290. And the result was,

  291. several years later, she went to Us ucla.

  292. She worked with Coach val. And in 20

  293. 19,

  294. Caitlin scored a perfect 10

  295. on a floor

  296. routine.

  297. And it was all on a video is

  298. on a Youtube video that went viral. I

  299. checked it this week. 245000000

  300. views on this on this

  301. floor routine.

  302. And you could just look at a couple

  303. of the comments and you can realize why

  304. it scored a perfect tent. When she is

  305. out there, you can see this joy.

  306. Just radiating

  307. out for her from her as she dance

  308. as she did her routine. And you get

  309. those the feeling that the reason for her

  310. 10 was not just because of the precision

  311. of her movement

  312. is more the joy that radiate out of

  313. her soul as she did it.

  314. Well, I'm not sure how many recovering gym

  315. we have in the room this morning, but

  316. I'm pretty sure most of us.

  317. Can relate to Caitlyn.

  318. So the next couple weeks we're going gonna

  319. be asking this question together is a church.

  320. Whatever happened to joy

  321. Whatever happened to joy. I mean, given all

  322. the events, particularly of the last couple of

  323. weeks,

  324. We have been drinking out of the fire

  325. hose of breaking news.

  326. It would not be surprising. If you and

  327. I find ourselves in the same place as

  328. Caitlin,

  329. or biblical speaking as the widow searching for

  330. the lost coin of what we could call

  331. joy. Same and at the risk of overs?

  332. Doesn't it feel sometimes in our day,

  333. like joy,

  334. joy has just been sucked out of the

  335. room.

  336. You know, years ago, when I flew for

  337. the navy, you need to know that we

  338. You sort of... When you flew for the

  339. navy, you sort of lost your first name.

  340. Everybody just called you by your call sign.

  341. And when I think of our contemporary state

  342. of affairs. I think of 1 particular man

  343. I flew with for a couple years. His

  344. call sign was

  345. black cloud.

  346. Black cloud. I know I tell you what

  347. Black Cloud on every bit of his name

  348. when he walked into the room Everything was

  349. wrong. Everything could go south. This could have

  350. yeah, but have you thought about...

  351. And I think about him many years ago

  352. and I can't picture a smile on his

  353. face.

  354. And here's the thing. Every single 1 of

  355. us today,

  356. We know a black cloud. And if we're

  357. honest,

  358. We may recognize that we may be seeing

  359. black cloud

  360. in the mirror.

  361. But see, the good news literally

  362. is that there is hope

  363. See, we're open up the the book of

  364. Philippians for these next couple of weeks.

  365. And 1 of the primary themes of the

  366. book

  367. is joy.

  368. And we see it right out of the

  369. gate this morning

  370. when we open up the fourth chapter

  371. Paul says to his church in Philip or

  372. to the church in Philip, and he says

  373. to us today these words.

  374. Rejoice in the lord always.

  375. I say it again, rejoice.

  376. And,

  377. I think these kids who are up here

  378. for bible will do they not help us

  379. to think about joy. In fact, this week

  380. earlier, I met with all the kids 1

  381. day, and I said, yeah, I'm gonna talk

  382. about joy in my sermon this week, can

  383. you help me?

  384. So I put them all together in front

  385. of the the fireside side setting. I said,

  386. give me a picture of joy. You can

  387. see that picture in your bulletin right now.

  388. Raised hands. And. I wish you could see

  389. some of the kids funny faces or making

  390. funny faces in there. And if you can't

  391. see that look on the email, but the

  392. it's a great picture to get us thinking

  393. about it.

  394. Well, Philippians is this beautiful book. This powerful

  395. book. And this fourth chapter brings it all

  396. home with I think some of Paul's most

  397. inspiring words.

  398. And we could preach an entire sermon series

  399. on the fourth chapter of Philippians, but this

  400. morning, I would like to focus on 1

  401. verse, more particularly.

  402. 4 words

  403. in 1 verse.

  404. You did hear it where Paul said,

  405. the lord is near.

  406. In fact, let's say that together. The Lord

  407. is

  408. near 1 more time. The Lord is near.

  409. Paul reminds us that's why you and I

  410. can yet have joy, but I don't wanna

  411. leave this. Let's not leave this as some

  412. nice bumper sticker.

  413. Dive into this little bit.

  414. Because what Paul has set up for us

  415. with these words

  416. are several layers, several

  417. foundations that build up to those wonderful

  418. 4

  419. words.

  420. So let's unpack the layers a bit.

  421. See, first of all, Paul is reminding us.

  422. We can rejoice in the Lord

  423. because God is still running the universe.

  424. We can rejoice in the Lord because God

  425. is still on the throne. God is still

  426. in charge.

  427. You know, earlier this week, Lin and, my

  428. wife Lin and, were sitting down, we having

  429. dinner, and we were watching the news and

  430. Like I said earlier, it was just like,

  431. drinking out of this frustrating fire hose. I

  432. was trying to drink out of it take

  433. it all. It just wasn't working. And 1

  434. of the things I do and I don't

  435. have a church meeting during the week because

  436. I often do some work workout in the

  437. garage, and I I, Like, turn up the

  438. music. Well, years ago, my son law, Gave

  439. me a subscription to spotify.

  440. You all have Spotify others. It it to

  441. me, it's says what you type in a

  442. song. It's there right away. You type in,

  443. anything and you get a playlist right away.

  444. So I walked out of this frustrating night

  445. with the news and walked out of my

  446. garage. I typed into my spotify,

  447. our God reign.

  448. Now instantly, about 30 songs came up and

  449. now I need to listen to that. So

  450. I sat there working in the garage. Our

  451. god rains by about the fifth or sixth

  452. song. Okay. I got it.

  453. Right?

  454. I got it.

  455. But I need that reminder.

  456. That no matter what

  457. our god reign.

  458. You know, in a deeper way earlier this

  459. week, I had that reminder with Pastor Keith.

  460. We're we're gonna be talking about that in

  461. the prayer concerns, but pastor Keith Ed,

  462. pastor of our partner church

  463. died this past week. I had the privilege

  464. of being with him. Just a few days

  465. before his death.

  466. And together, as pastors, we remembered the words

  467. of Psalm 46.

  468. God is it's our refuge and our strength,

  469. and ever present help in trouble.

  470. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth

  471. give and the mountains fall into the heart

  472. of the sea.

  473. There's a river who streams make glad the

  474. city of God. God is within or she

  475. will not fall. God will help her it

  476. break day. And then the famous words in

  477. verse 10,

  478. be still

  479. and know that I'm God.

  480. I needed that reminder, and I certainly found

  481. it in psalm 46.

  482. But there is the first layer that we

  483. all need to hold to. In all the

  484. events of the world are, God rings. And

  485. if we could hold on to that somehow,

  486. There's a foundation upon which

  487. we can yet build

  488. a living testimony to the joy of which

  489. we speak.

  490. But it keeps going. That's first layer. Our

  491. God rains,

  492. but there's another part of it. Our God

  493. rains and

  494. our God is

  495. Good.

  496. We're gonna speak a lot more about this

  497. next week.

  498. But in important detail to the book of

  499. Philippians is that when Paul wrote these words,

  500. when Paul tells you and me to rejoice,

  501. he is in miserable circumstances. He's he's in

  502. prison.

  503. And yet he's writing about joy.

  504. Now, Paul is there in part

  505. because of bad

  506. leadership.

  507. He's dealing with leaders of the local synagogue.

  508. Who have likely ins indicated his imprisonment.

  509. He's dealing with roman authorities at the beginning

  510. of seasons of persecution of the church

  511. He's dealing with leaders in his individual church

  512. that have are fighting against him.

  513. So the point is he's surrounded by bad

  514. leadership.

  515. And yet, he calls us to rejoice. And

  516. what he does, is he says,

  517. put your perspective meditate upon different things.

  518. Because those good things are of God.

  519. Did hear this wonderful words.

  520. He says, whatever is true.

  521. Whatever's noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure,

  522. whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable.

  523. Think of these things.

  524. With the implicit reminder

  525. that we think about these things,

  526. because these things are of God,

  527. Our god is good, lovely,

  528. true,

  529. admirable,

  530. lovely, praise worthy noble.

  531. You see we can rejoice because at the

  532. foundation, it is true.

  533. Our God rains.

  534. But on top of that,

  535. our god is good,

  536. and our god is love.

  537. And now on these 2 layers, we can

  538. place those beautiful 4 words.

  539. The Lord is near.

  540. It's a beautiful and inspiring aspiring thing.

  541. That hopefully inspires joy in you

  542. that this God

  543. who reign as God who is good. That

  544. god knows your name.

  545. In my name. He knows everything you're dealing

  546. with.

  547. Every struggle, every sin, every doubt, all of

  548. it is all there

  549. and yet. He's not going anywhere.

  550. He knows your name. He has called you

  551. by name. This says come to be all

  552. who labor and every. I will give you

  553. rest.

  554. See, the lord

  555. of which we speak today is not an

  556. imp force of the universe,

  557. but a personal 1.

  558. Who has come to you and to me

  559. through the person of Jesus Christ.

  560. And as such,

  561. the lord is near.

  562. That's what he Jesus meant when he said

  563. the kingdom of God is near.

  564. He's reminding you that the resources of the

  565. living and loving and all powerful god are

  566. abundantly available

  567. to you.

  568. And to me, despite what our I see

  569. in the world

  570. But let's not overlook 1 of the most

  571. beautiful resources for joy

  572. that we so often overlook.

  573. God himself.

  574. You know Dallas Willard

  575. spoke a lot about this with a reminder,

  576. He puts it kind of simply,

  577. but offers a reminder that we often forget...

  578. We often forget God really is happy.

  579. God is full of contagious

  580. joy.

  581. The God didn't send up there on the

  582. throne with his stern look upon you and

  583. upon this creation. That God isn't coiled in

  584. the kingdom as a snake ready to strike

  585. those who do wrong.

  586. But god,

  587. exists certainly in h.

  588. God certainly

  589. existed all that glory.

  590. But in all of that God exists

  591. enjoy.

  592. Do you remember what Jesus said in the

  593. book of John, spoke about the father's love.

  594. And then he said, I have told you

  595. this so my joy may be in you.

  596. And your joy may be complete.

  597. Do you see that friends?

  598. The God who's running the universe

  599. is good.

  600. The god who knows your name is running

  601. the universe is good.

  602. And the god who knows your name is

  603. a God of cons joy.

  604. I to confess that my take on joy

  605. over the years

  606. has changed a bit. In the past, I

  607. I thought about joy, I've taken inspiration and

  608. still take inspiration.

  609. From a great poem written years ago

  610. by Ella Wi hitchcock Will, and She embraces

  611. the sailing

  612. imagery

  613. as we think about our lives. She says

  614. this and I quote.

  615. 1 ship drives east

  616. and another drives west,

  617. with the self same winds that blow.

  618. Tis the set of the sales

  619. and not the gale

  620. which tell us the way to go,

  621. Like the winds of the seas are the

  622. ways of fate as we voyage along through

  623. the life

  624. tis the set of a soul

  625. that decides its goal

  626. and not the calm of the... Or the

  627. strife.

  628. Do you see the imagery she's offering?

  629. We can't control the storms. We can't control

  630. the winds. We can't control the circumstances that

  631. come our way, but we can set our

  632. sails. Right?

  633. We can set our sales for joy. It

  634. reminds us that you and I do have

  635. some

  636. agency in our lives.

  637. Dare we say for joy.

  638. I can make forward progress

  639. even if I can't control the storms.

  640. And there is so much truth to that.

  641. But here's the other part of it. Years

  642. of life and ministry have reminded me that

  643. sometimes.

  644. There are seasons of life for you and

  645. for me, where we can't even get to

  646. the mas

  647. to set the sales.

  648. I love the phrase I choose joy, but

  649. the reality of lying for reminded me and

  650. others, how often We just can't bring it.

  651. We can't choose joy at that point.

  652. We can't get to that love in that

  653. wonder.

  654. We can't just rejoice. I say again rejoice.

  655. But he... There's the beauty of Paul.

  656. He doesn't just command us to have joy.

  657. He invites us

  658. to cast our gaze upon who god is.

  659. We may not have the strength

  660. to raise our sails up on the mas,

  661. but see we can look to Jesus.

  662. The author and the perfect of our faith,

  663. so that his joy may be raised up

  664. in us to do what we cannot do

  665. on our own.

  666. And you see, Paul brings all this together

  667. with that beautiful verse

  668. and a closing image.

  669. He says this and I quote.

  670. Do not be anxious about anything,

  671. but in every situation by prayer and petition

  672. with Thanksgiving presenter your requests to God.

  673. And the peace of god which transcend all

  674. understanding will guard, hold that will guard your

  675. hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

  676. Say, Paul tells us to rejoice.

  677. And Paul says do not be anxious about

  678. anything.

  679. But then he gathers all of this power

  680. these words

  681. under an image.

  682. Actually, it's a military image.

  683. He speaks of the peace of god,

  684. guarding you, guarding our hearts.

  685. Guarding our minds in Christ Jesus.

  686. It's almost as if he's saying the peace

  687. of god is a century

  688. standing watch over us, guarding over us as

  689. we live as we deal with the challenges

  690. of life that the peace of God is

  691. avail, to stand over us as we sleep

  692. standing guard watching.

  693. I find that to be an incredibly helpful

  694. image.

  695. Could Paul says don't be anxious about anything.

  696. But what do you do

  697. when it's 10:11

  698. o'clock a night midnight in and in your

  699. mind is just

  700. spinning.

  701. Can't get to sleep. What do when you

  702. wake up at 2 in the morning 3

  703. in the morning,

  704. and your thoughts are just off to the

  705. races.

  706. Maybe it's not a Pan,

  707. but I tell you what it's better and

  708. count sheep.

  709. What if this image could be true?

  710. What if it's true?

  711. That in my sleep,

  712. in my anxiety,

  713. in my worries,

  714. in my anxious spirit. In my spinning thoughts,

  715. there is god's peace.

  716. Standing guard over my soul.

  717. Even though it feels like my life is

  718. in a spin cycle.

  719. God's peace standing guard over you and me.

  720. Well, friends, so what has happened to joy?

  721. Can you relate to our Gym miss Caitlin

  722. No?

  723. With all the news you've seen in the

  724. last couple weeks does it feel like you're

  725. turning into black cloud.

  726. Well, let's spend some time together with Paul

  727. and joy Philippians summer because you know what?

  728. Good news is joy hadn't gone anywhere.

  729. In fact, Paul says joy in the Lord

  730. is near

  731. And our God is still a god of

  732. cons joy.

  733. Our God reign. Our God is good, and

  734. our God knows your name.

  735. But as you go forth this week and

  736. turn on another week of breaking news and

  737. as you also look at the Olympics this

  738. week.

  739. Let's remember this lesson.

  740. And let's claim God's peace as it stands

  741. guard over you and me.

  742. In the name of the father and the

  743. son and the holy spirit.

  744. I'm amen.

  745. In response to the word proclaimed, I invite

  746. you to stand and sing together these words

  747. from Philippians 4 that you'll find in the

  748. middle of your bulletin.

  749. Please stand and join in singing rejoice in

  750. the Lord.

  751. As we remain standing let's together, say what

  752. we believe using number 887

  753. in your him.

  754. Let's offer these words together from the eighth

  755. chapter of Romans.

  756. Who shall separate us from the love of

  757. Christ.

  758. Cell tribulation or distress or persecution or famine

  759. or naked or peril or sword.

  760. No.

  761. In all these things, we are more than

  762. conquer

  763. through the 1 who loved us.

  764. We are sure that neither death, nor life,

  765. nor angels, nor principal municipalities,

  766. nor things present, nor things to come,

  767. nor powers, nor height nor depth,

  768. nor anything else in all creation,

  769. will be able to separate us from the

  770. love of god.

  771. In Christ Jesus our Lord.

  772. Thanks speak to god.

  773. Amen.

  774. Let us please be seated.

  775. Perfect

  776. needs

  777. on

  778. as Pete mentioned, we have 2 pastor concerns

  779. to share,

  780. pastor Key from Coin,

  781. community church did die this past week. I

  782. know there's been some information that has been

  783. going around about his funeral plans, but

  784. they are still not set fully yet. So,

  785. stay tuned for more information

  786. about that,

  787. also, as you'll see in your Bulletin Carolyn

  788. Mitchell, another member of our church also died

  829. you are also a God of joy.

  830. And we pray that you would help fill

  831. each of us

  832. with your divine

  833. joy.

  834. And we acknowledge that there are circumstances

  835. in life

  836. and in the world around us that can

  837. take our joy away from us, but we

  838. pray that you would help each of us

  839. to choose joy.

  858. and that you would guard our hearts and

  859. minds and fill us always with your joy,

  860. and with your peace.

  861. We praise you, we glorify you always o

  862. god.

  863. Re that you are always the year.

  864. As we ask all of this in the

  865. name of Jesus Christ our Lord who taught

  866. us to pray together,

  867. our father,

  868. who are in heaven.

  869. Hall it b thy.

  870. Thy kingdom of home,

  871. thy will be.

  872. On earth as it is in heaven.

  873. Give us the stay our daily bread

  874. and forgive us our tres

  875. as we forgive those who tres against us

  876. and lead us not to temptation,

  877. but deliver us from you,

  878. for thy is a kingdom

  879. and the power

  880. and the glory forever.

  881. Ami amen.

  882. And now I'd like to invite our usher

  927. The Lord is near,

  928. and the lord who is near is good,

  929. and the Lord who is near who is

  930. good is overall.

  931. And this god is a God of joy.

  932. Let us hold on to that truth as

  933. we meet the challenges and joys to come

  934. our way and go now in the name

  935. of the father, and the sun and the

  936. holy spirit as all god's people say.

  937. Amen.
