  1. Hi, this is Pastor Rick Warren. You know, the Bible

  2. says that God's mercies are new every morning. That means

  3. every day you get a chance to start over, new day,

  4. new vision, new goals, new mercy. That's good news. We're

  5. going to be talking about it all year here at

  6. Daily Hope. So God bless you everybody. I'm glad you're

  7. listening today and stick with us through the whole year.

  8. This is Pastor Rick's Daily Hope, the Bible teaching ministry

  9. of Pastor Rick Warren. Today we continue in a series

  10. called Transformed. In these lessons, Rick uncovers key principles found

  11. in God's.

  12. Word that will completely.

  13. Transform our lives from the inside out in every area

  14. including spiritual, physical, mental, emotional, relational, financial, and vocational. Now,

  15. if you can improve in any of these areas I

  16. just mentioned, stay with us, because in just a few

  17. months moments, we're going to let you know how you

  18. can have your very own Transformed study kit from Pastor Rick,

  19. which includes a seven session DVD and workbook. You can

  20. take a sneak peek right now by going to Pastororik

  21. dot com while you listen, and if you want, you

  22. can just text the word daily to eight hundred, six hundred,

  23. five thousand and four to find out more. Right now,

  24. here's Pastor Rick Warren with part two of a message

  25. called From Stress to Blast.

  26. You will spend one third of your life asleep. Now,

  27. if God's only going to give you sixty eighty one

  28. hundred years here on earth, why wouldn't he give you

  29. one hundred percent of the time. Why would one third

  30. of that time be wasted in sleep? Because God wants

  31. you to learn the importance of rest. Rest is so important.

  32. God rest. God modeled it when he created the whole universe.

  33. The Bible says that after he finished all creation, it says,

  34. on the seventh day, God rested. Now, why did God rest?

  35. He wasn't tired. God doesn't ever get tired. He was

  36. modeling the importance of rest to your life. And he says,

  37. every seventh day you rest. And he said, that's what

  38. God did. He modeled it. Now, the Bible's filled with

  39. instructions about rest, recreation, and relaxation. In fact, it's so important.

  40. God put it in the Big Ten. It's in the

  41. ten Commandments, right up there with don't commit adultery and

  42. don't murder and don't lie.

  43. He says, every seventh day you take a day off.

  44. Hello, that's how important a sabbath is in your life.

  45. Jesus later said the Sabbath was made for man, not

  46. man for the Sabbath. In other words, God says, I

  47. created this idea if you take a day off every

  48. seven days for rest, recreation, worship, and restoration. He goes,

  49. that's my idea. It's for your benefit. It's so you

  50. don't burn out. And yet today, in our modern society,

  51. people aren't doing that. Even on their day off, they're working.

  52. And a lot of people, even if they go to

  53. a church service, then they go home and they go

  54. right back to work trying to get done all the

  55. stuff they didn't get done during the work week. That's

  56. not a sabbath. That's not a sabbath. Now, God says,

  57. I want you to rest. Psalm twenty three, verse two

  58. says this he makes me lie down. Circle the phrase

  59. makes me He says, God makes me lie down? Has God,

  60. I've had to make you lay down because you aren't

  61. smart enough to obey what he says about rest and

  62. take a day off every week. You know, sheep aren't

  63. smart enough to rest when they get tired, so the

  64. shepherd has to make them lay down. And if you're

  65. not smart enough to get the rest you need and

  66. take a day off every week for rest, your body

  67. will make sure you do it. And God has wired

  68. your body in such a way that if you don't

  69. take time off, your body will make time off. Anybody

  70. want to give a testimony on that. If you just

  71. keep working, working, you're going to get sick. Because God

  72. wired you to obey his commandments. Getting enough sleep is

  73. essential to stress management. I want you to write this down.

  74. My best requires rest. You are not wasting time when

  75. you're relaxing. You're not wasting time when you're resting. It

  76. is better to have loafed and lost than to have

  77. never loafed at all. That's why God gave us a sabbath.

  78. And here's the Sabbath Exodus thirty four to twenty one.

  79. Six days are set aside for work. But every seventh

  80. day you must rest completely. Circle the word completely. You

  81. must rest completely. Even during your seasons of plowing and harvest,

  82. you must observe a Sabbath day of rest. Notice that

  83. even in your busiest season, it's no excuse you may

  84. be a tax accountant and it's April, you still have

  85. to take a day off.

  86. Okay.

  87. I mean you may be a retailer and it's Christmas season,

  88. you still have to take a day off. You may

  89. be a farmer and it may be a harvest or

  90. planting season. You still have to take a day off. Now,

  91. what am I supposed to do on my Sabbath? Three things?

  92. Write these down. Here's three things you're supposed to do

  93. on your Sabbath. Number one, rest my body. You need

  94. to rest your body physically.

  95. Rest.

  96. There's a biblical basis for a good Sunday afternoon nap,

  97. right there. Number two, just not when I'm speaking. Number two,

  98. refocus my spirit. I rest my body on the Sabbath,

  99. and I refocus my spirit. And what is that? That's worship.

  100. It's what you're doing right now. You are refocusing your

  101. spirit right now by coming to worship, and in corporate worship,

  102. we recharge and refresh our spirit. And number three, I

  103. am to recharge my emotions. Use the sabbath to recharge emotions.

  104. That's what recreation does. It recharges your emotions. Now, different

  105. things recharge different people, and we'll talk about that in

  106. just a minute.

  107. About how you.

  108. Need beauty in your life, but you need you need

  109. to do something that restores you and re energize. It

  110. could be a hobby, it could be a sport. These

  111. are good things that God has given us as gifts

  112. in order to recharge your emotions. You know, it doesn't

  113. really matter which day is your Sabbath. In fact, the

  114. Book of Colossians in the Bible says it doesn't matter

  115. which day you choose. You just need to choose to day.

  116. My sabbath is not Sunday. Sunday is a workday for me,

  117. by the way, so is Saturday. My sabbath is Monday.

  118. And on Monday, I rest and I refocus and I

  119. recharge and that's and I don't do any work on Monday.

  120. That's my sabbath. And by the way, I don't call

  121. it your day off, because if it's your day off,

  122. you'll cheat on it. And you said, oh, I got

  123. all these things they need to do, I'll do this.

  124. But if it's your sabbath, then you use it for

  125. what God intended. He said, but I feel guilty when

  126. I relax. Well, Jesus didn't. When you study jesus ministry,

  127. he often took time off to relax. In fact, he'd

  128. go out into an entire period of intensive ministry and

  129. then he'd say, guys, we need to come apart for

  130. a while. We're going off to the mountains. We're going

  131. off the desert. We got to come apart. And I

  132. always say, if you don't come apart, you're going to

  133. come apart. And he said, let's go off to the desert.

  134. He goes out there where there's these springs and those

  135. those date palms, palms and springs and palm springs. There's

  136. a biblical basis for going to palms right there. Okay,

  137. he says, go off to the desert and we're gonna.

  138. Go relax for a while.

  139. I'm sure they didn't have a jacuzzi to sit in,

  140. but it would have been nice. But Jesus didn't feel

  141. guilty about it. Did you know that during the French

  142. Revolution they canceled the French government canceled the sabbath and

  143. said every day is going to.

  144. Be a workday.

  145. And after a couple of years they had to reinstate

  146. it because the health of the nation had crumbled. You

  147. need this in your life, you need a sabbath. I

  148. heard about a guy who said to his pastor. He said, Pastor,

  149. I tried to get a hold of you all day

  150. on Monday, and the pastor said, well, I'm sorry, it's

  151. my day off. And the man said, well, the devil

  152. never takes a day off, and he said yeah, and

  153. if I didn't, I'd be just like the devil. And

  154. some of you that's why you're so mean. You're not

  155. getting enough sleep, you're not getting enough rest, and you're

  156. a little devil because you're not taking the Sabbath.

  157. And the devil's not your model. Okay.

  158. Number three, I looked to God to meet on my needs.

  159. The Lord is my shepherd. I obey God's instructions about rest.

  160. He makes me lay down, lie down. Then number three,

  161. I recharge my soul with beauty. Beauty is an incredibly

  162. important thing in stress management. Ugliness stresses you out. Beauty inspires,

  163. Beauty encourages, Beauty motivates, Beauty stirs up positive emotions.

  191. Once again, here's Rick.

  192. I look to God to meet all my needs. The

  193. Lord is my shepherd. I obey God's instructions about rest.

  194. He makes me lay down, lie down. Then number three,

  195. I recharge my soul with beauty. That's the third thing

  196. you need to do. Recharge my soul with beauty. Beauty

  197. is an incredibly important thing in stress management. Ugliness stresses

  198. you out. Beauty inspires, Beauty encourages, Beauty motivates, Beauty stirs

  199. up positive emotions. Have you ever thought about why God

  200. made the world so beautiful?

  201. And you look at.

  202. Sunrises and sunsets, beautiful flowers that are never even seen,

  203. and all of these sites around the world that many

  204. people will humanize.

  205. We'll see, but God created a world of beauty.

  206. He could have made Earth just like the moon, just

  207. a moonscape, or like Tattooine.

  208. For those of you who don't know Star Wars.

  209. That's the desert planet that Luke was from Skywalker, and

  210. he wanted to get off that planet really quick because

  211. it's pretty ugly. Anybody should have go on about the gospel.

  212. According to Scar Wars, he could have made it just

  213. a desolate, dusty, gray planet.

  214. No.

  215. No, God created a planet with vibrant colors. Have you

  216. ever heard anybody say? I heard it the other day

  217. when I was actually last summer, I was on vacation

  218. up in Yosemite. We were under some redwood trees, and

  219. a man said to me, I feel so close to

  220. God in nature.

  221. Well, of course you do. He created it.

  222. Man was made to live in a garden, not in

  223. a skyscraper. When God created man, he put him in

  224. the garden of Eden. He didn't put him a skyscraper.

  225. You weren't made to live in everything concrete. God made

  226. us to live in a garden, in a beautiful place.

  227. Any of you remember Woodstock? You're really old if you

  228. just raise your hand. Okay, really really old. Okay. There's

  229. this rock concert many many years ago. Joni Mitchell wrote

  230. a song about it called Woodstock, and it says, well,

  231. I came upon a child of God. He was walking

  232. along the road, and I said where you're going? He said,

  233. I'm going up the Yazgres Farm for this rock and

  234. roll band.

  235. And there's a line in.

  236. The course that says this, we are stardust, we are golden,

  237. and we're caught in the devil's bar and we've got to.

  238. Get back to the garden.

  239. And it's a capital g she's talking about the garden

  240. of Eden. We've come a long way from the Garden

  241. of Eden on this planet.

  242. People say I feel close to God in nature. Of

  243. course you do.

  244. It's God's beauty, and beauty inspires and beauty motivates. Notice

  245. the next verse Psalm twenty three, verse two and three.

  246. He makes me lie down? But where does he make

  247. me lie down?

  248. He makes me lie down in lush green meadows golf course.

  249. And leaves me.

  250. Beside calm, quiet waters.

  251. By the sandtrap.

  252. He restores my soul. Okay, he restores my soul. Now

  253. it's no wonder. Psalm twenty three is the most beloved

  254. psalm because we can all visualize this one. When I

  255. say think about lush, green meadows and a calm, quiet lake, you.

  256. Relax just thinking about it. Okay.

  257. If I say think about downtown LA, you get stressed out.

  258. I say, think about meadows and calm waters and babbling brooks.

  259. Nature refreshes because beauty inspires. Now you need beautiful scenes.

  260. You need to see beautiful scenes, and you need to

  261. hear beautiful sounds. In order to keep the stress down

  262. in your life. You need to add beauty into your life.

  263. Let me give you some suggestions. Write these down.

  264. Number one, get outside every day. If you're not getting

  265. outside every day, your stress level is going up. Even

  266. if it's just your backyard, even if just walk around

  267. the block, even if it's take your lunch outside. Walk

  268. outside of the office and sit outside and look up

  269. at a tree while you eat your sandwich. You need

  270. to get in touch with God's creation. You need to

  271. surround yourself with beauty. Get outside. Let me give you

  272. a second suggestion. Start the day with God, not the media.

  273. Before you read any text message, before you check your email,

  274. before you turn on the radio to some talk radio

  275. people screaming at each other, or before you turn on

  276. the television for some morning show. You need to get

  277. in touch with God first. The first seven minutes of

  278. your day set your mood every day. So do you

  279. want to start it with an alarm clock and then

  280. the worst news of the day coming at you. No,

  281. you don't really need to know all the bad news

  282. first thing when you get up, you don't need to

  283. know that you need to turn on some praise music,

  284. some worship music. You need to get in touch with God.

  285. You need to let the first five ten minutes of

  286. your day be with the Lord, and that'll dramatically reduce

  287. your stress and improve your mood. Another suggestion number three,

  288. intentionally put beauty around you, whether it's pieces of art

  289. or music that inspires you, or something a craft, that

  290. something that you know. I used to collect seashells, and

  291. I collected them from all over the world, and I

  292. did it and I had had my library filled with

  293. them because looking at those things simply inspired me to go, Wow,

  294. that the intricacy of that nautilus, how God inspired that.

  295. Looking at beauty lowers your stress level. Listening to beauty

  296. lowers your stress level. So I highly recommend that you

  297. either take up an instrument or or some kind of

  298. art or craft to create beauty. You are most like

  299. your creator when you're being creative, and so you need

  300. art in your life.

  301. You need beauty.

  302. And by the way, art and music are two of

  303. the greatest arguments against evolution. Why because they're totally unnecessary

  304. for human survival. And if the whole survival of the fittest

  305. really works, then why in the world do we have

  306. music and art in the world. Because you're more than

  307. a body and God made you for worship. Did you

  308. know more songs have been written about Jesus than any

  309. other subject in human history. Did you know more books

  310. have been written about Jesus than in any other subject

  311. in human history. Do you know that more art has

  312. been created about the Bible and honor and glorify God

  313. and Jesus than any other subject in history. Why God

  314. gave us music and God gave us art for one reason,

  315. to express emotion. That's the only purpose of it. You

  316. don't need it for physical survival, but you do need

  317. it to really live, to be who God made you

  318. to be. So fill your life with art, and fill

  319. your life with music. You know, when I get stressed out,

  320. I go home, I pick up a guitar and start

  321. playing a guitar, are sitting on piano, bang on the piano, ukulele,

  322. doesn't matter, kazoo, you know whatever, just come and paper.

  323. It's like last week you said, make a joyful noise

  324. that don't have to be pretty, Just make a joyful noise.

  325. Philippians four to eight says this, You'll do best by

  326. filling your minds and meditating on things that are true

  327. and noble and reputable, and authentic and compelling and gracious.

  328. It sounds like television, doesn't it. No, it doesn't. That

  329. is not television. Okay.

  330. You'll do best by filling your mind with things that

  331. are true and noble and authentic, compelling, gracious, the best,

  332. not the worst.

  333. The beautiful, not the ugly.

  334. Now because of sin, there's a lot of ugliness in

  335. the world. World, there are a lot of unpleasant things

  336. in the world. Whatever you give your attention to is

  337. going to either raise or lower your stress. Some of

  338. you during fifty days transformation, you need to do a

  339. fast on the news. I hate to tell you this,

  340. but you could miss the news for the next fifty days,

  341. and I'm going to make one difference in the world.

  365. Pastor Rick with an important closing word.

  366. You know here at daily Hope.

  367. We use the Internet and podcasts and email and as

  368. many other different channels as possible to share God's hope

  369. and love with as many people as we can. Now,

  370. one of the ways that we use is by broadcasting

  371. on radio stations just like the one you're listening to

  372. right now.

  373. Now.

  374. You may not know this, but purchasing radio airtime is

  375. a significant expense for our ministry. But we want to

  376. bring this teaching to you, and we believe you are

  377. worth it. Now, in order to be good stewards of

  378. the gifts that God has given us, we're only able

  379. to continue on the air on stations we're listener supporters.

  380. Let us know that they're listening to the programs. That's

  381. why it's very important that you let us know the

  382. call letters and the city of your radio station when

  383. you give any kind of gift or support today, Hope.

  384. This is very important. Let us know your call letters

  385. and the name of the city that you are hearing

  386. this broadcast.

  387. Now.

  388. I realize that some of you can't afford to help

  389. us out financially.

  390. That's okay.

  391. We love you, We thank God for you. We want

  392. to minister and serve you. Everybody in the Body of

  393. Christ has different gifts to share at different times in life.

  394. You can pray for us and there will be others

  395. of you who can give generously so that God can

  396. continue to spread this message throughout the world. You need

  397. to know that Daily Hope is one hundred percent funded

  398. by the daily gifts and offerings that you give with

  399. your generous support. You also need to know that I

  400. don't take any salary from Daily Hope. All of the

  401. gifts given to this broadcast go directly toward fulfilling our

  402. mission of reaching people with the certain hope that we

  403. can only find in Jesus. So I'm going to ask

  404. you to do something today. Will you pray for me

  405. and will you pray for this Daily Hope ministry help

  406. us to reach every person in the world with the

  407. certain hope that only comes from believing and receiving Jesus Christ.

  408. You know it's only by hearing the word of God

  409. and by putting into practice that we discover and we

  410. fulfill the purposes God has for each.

  411. Of our lives.

  412. So I want to just say thank you, thank you

  413. so much for your financial support that you're able to

  414. give whenever you're able to give it and may God

  415. bless your generosity.

  416. To give a gift and help keep Daily Hope on
