  2. and for God, and until you understand that, life will

  3. never make sense. Welcome to Pastor Rick's Daily Hope.

  4. Today.

  5. In our series called God's Vision for the Rest of

  6. your Life, Rick continues in his effort to help you

  7. discover the unique purpose and vision that the Lord has

  8. for your life. Now, in just a few moments, we're

  9. going to tell you how to get a copy of

  10. the brand new Daily Hope twenty twenty one Prayer Journal

  11. based on the theme God's Great Adventure for You, a

  12. great resource to help make your time in prayer the

  13. best it can be. Go to Pastorick dot com to

  14. find out more, or text the word daily to eight

  15. hundred six hundred five thousand and four. That's Pastorick dot com.

  16. Or the word daily to eight hundred six hundred five

  17. thousand and four. Here's Pastor Rick Warren with the final

  18. part of a message called learning to Live Wisely.

  19. Now there's a third key if you want to learn wisdom. First,

  20. every day I listen to God for a very short time.

  21. I just read the Bible or listen to the Bible

  22. connect that's the l Then I enlist some friends and

  23. get some wise people around me in my life for

  24. input that encourage me keep me going. The A stands

  25. for ask questions and accept correction. If you were going

  26. to be wise in life, you're gonna become a wise woman.

  27. If you're going to become a wise man, if you're

  28. gonna be known that guy's wise, you're gonna have to

  29. learn how to ask questions wise questions, and you're gonna

  30. have to learn how to accept correction. Look up here

  31. on the screen. The Bible says people's thoughts can be

  32. like a deep well, but someone with understanding can find

  33. the wisdom there where it's everybody's got something to teach you.

  34. Everybody has something to teach you, but it's like deep

  35. water in a well, and you've got to draw it

  36. out of them. How do you draw the wisdom out

  37. of every person? By learning to ask smart questions? I

  38. can teach you how to do this in the next

  39. six weeks. I can teach you how to ask smart questions.

  40. I have a list of them that I use myself,

  41. and as I've traveled all around the world, I can learn.

  42. You can learn from anybody if you know the right

  43. questions everybody's brilliant, just on different subjects, and everybody's ignorant.

  44. Just on different subjects.

  45. You know some things that I don't know, And if

  46. I had time to sit with you, you could teach me

  47. if I know the right questions to ask. I know

  48. some things you don't know, and if you knew the

  49. right questions, I can teach you some things you don't know.

  50. The person sitting next to you right now they know

  51. some things that neither of us know. You can learn

  52. from anybody if you know the right questions. And so

  53. asking questions and accepting correction is a key to wisdom.

  54. The Bible says, by the way, you know, as I've

  55. traveled around the world, I've talked to I've asked questions

  56. of taxicab drivers and prime ministers, and they both taught me.

  57. I've learned from from a hotel maids, and I've learned

  58. from presidents. Because you can learn from anybody if you

  59. ask questions. Proverbs eighteen fifteen says this, intelligent people are

  60. always open to new ideas. In fact, they look for them.

  61. That's a sign of intelligence that you look for new ideas.

  62. You're an entrepreneur, you're an innovator. You're always looking for

  63. a new idea. That's a sign of intelligence. But when

  64. you look for them, one of the keys is listening.

  65. If you don't listen, then you're not going to grow.

  66. One of the things I've learned is that I have

  67. never learned anything while I'm talking. If my mouth is moving,

  68. I'm not learning. I'm only learning when i'm listening. You

  69. don't learn when you're talking, You learn when you're listening.

  70. So you got to learn to listen.

  71. You know. I've done an.

  72. Awful lot of interviews ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, BBC, CNN,

  73. on and on and on, and what I've noticed is

  74. that the interview shows have changed. They're no longer about

  75. the guests. They're about the interviewer. And the whole goal

  76. is the interviewer wants to draw attention to himself. The

  77. interviewer wants to explain his or her opinions, and you're

  78. just the foil. I long for the old Larry King days.

  79. Larry King.

  80. I didn't agree with everything, but you know what, Larry

  81. King he would ask a question and then he'd let

  82. you talk. And he realized that the interview people weren't

  83. going to listen, Larry King, they were going to listen

  84. to all of the different fascinating guests that he had

  85. and learning from them. Larry said in an interview show,

  86. if the host is talking fifty percent of the time,

  87. something is terribly wrong. The host listens the most, the

  88. host talks the least. The host sets up the question

  89. and then just listens. That's what a good TV host does.

  90. It's same thing is true in a small group. The

  91. host listens the most, the host talks the least. So

  92. if you're shy, you should ask to be the host

  93. of your small group. If you don't like to talk,

  94. you want to be the host. The host of a

  95. group is not the teacher. The host is the one

  96. who says, now the next question is, and you read it,

  97. and then you let everybody else talk and you don't

  98. not say anything.

  99. How cool is that?

  100. So the host listens the most, You're not the teacher,

  101. You're just listening. What I'm talking about is leadership. All

  102. leaders are learners. For thirty years, I've been training leaders

  103. around the world, business leaders, church leaders, government leaders in

  104. one hundred and sixty four countries. All leaders are learners.

  105. The moment you stop learning, you stop leading. Growing businesses

  106. require growing businessmen. The moment you stop growing your business

  107. stops growing. Growing families require growing parents. Growing churches require

  108. growing pastors. Anything that wants to grow, the leader has

  109. to be outgrowing it or the growth stops. Does that

  110. make sense? So all leaders are learners. I'm constantly learning.

  111. I learn from churches that are smaller than saddle back.

  112. I learned from churches that are larger than saddleback. I

  113. learn from people who agree with us. I learn from

  114. people who disagree with us. I learn from enemies. I

  115. learn from critics. That makes me wiser than my critics.

  116. Why Because I learned from them, so I know what

  117. I know. Then I learn what they know. All they

  118. know is what they know. They don't learn from me,

  119. But I learned from them. So it makes me smarter

  120. because I learn what I know, Plus I.

  121. Learn what they know.

  122. You're listening to Pastor Rick's Daily Hope. Rick will be

  148. call eight hundred six hundred at five zero zero four.

  149. You're listening to Pastor Rick's Daily Hope once again. Here's

  150. Pastor Rick Warren.

  151. Are and learn.

  152. How to learn wisdom is remember, remember, and reinforce what

  153. I learned. You can't just learn it. You got to

  154. remember it. And you can't just remember it, You've got

  155. to reinforce it because if you don't remember and reinforce it,

  156. you end up having to learn the same lesson over and.

  157. Over and over. Have you ever done that?

  158. Yeah, you'd had to relearn the same lesson over and

  159. over and over and over because you may keep making

  160. the same stupid mistake because you don't remember and you

  161. don't reinforce, which, by the way, is why we hand

  162. out these little handout things every week. The United States

  163. Air Force says you forget ninety to ninety five percent

  164. of everything you hear within seventy two hours. That's the

  165. most depressing statistic possible for a pastor, because what it

  166. means is by Wednesday, you're good have forgotten everything I've

  167. just taught you. You're not gonna remember. Shoot, you don't

  168. remember what I said last week. I don't remember what

  169. I said last week, and I taught it five times.

  170. If you the shortest pencil is longer than the longest memory.

  171. So you can be sitting there looking all real spiritual,

  172. but if you're not writing down, it's just going whoo

  173. right through your mind in one air and out the other.

  174. We don't remember. You have to retain it to remember.

  175. It so you can review it, so you can apply it.

  176. And that's why we do these things.

  177. Now.

  178. The Bible says this about wisdom Proverbs twenty two. Listen

  179. and I'll teach you what the whys have said. Study

  180. their teachings, and you will be glad if you remember

  181. them and can quote them. Now, I want you to

  182. circle the four verbs in that In that sense, listen, study, remember,

  183. and quote. Those are marks of wisdom. Did you know

  184. that memorizing actually improves your brain power? Doesn't even matter

  185. what your memorize, it improves your brain. You could go

  186. memorize the phone directory, but memory is actually like an

  187. exercise for your mind. You get smarter when you attempt

  188. to memorize something. People said, well, I can't remember anything Oh, yes,

  189. you can. You remember what's important to you. You remember

  190. what you love, You remember what you what matters to you.

  191. For instance, a lot of people say, I can't memorize

  192. the Bible, but they can give you every baseball or

  193. football statistic for the last season. Or I can't remember

  194. the Bible, but they can quote all kinds of lyrics songs,

  195. popular songs. Or they can give you a recipe for something,

  196. or they can give you the stock market quotes, or

  197. they can give you statistics on something they care about.

  198. You remember what's important to you, and if the truth

  199. becomes important to you, you will remember it. You will remember,

  200. and you will rehearse it, and you will reinforce it,

  201. and you will review it in your life. Not only

  202. interesting studies have shown not only when you memorize something

  203. does it help you improve your memory. Memory helps you

  204. improve your memory, It actually helps every other area in

  205. your brain. The same time, synapses are developed and blood

  206. flows and your brain has a plasticity. That it's the

  207. opposite of Alzheimer's. When you stretch your brain, you Social

  208. relationships and memorizing are two things that actually are preventatives

  209. from Alzheimer's and other dementias in life, so you want

  210. to have that in your life. So in each weekend,

  211. we're gonna memorize together, and you'll not only be closer

  212. to God, but you'll have a healthier brain and your

  213. wife will thank you for that. Now, people say why

  214. should I memorize the Bible. I'll tell you why, because

  215. every time you need the Bible's truth, you don't have

  216. one near you. You go to work this week, somebody's

  217. going to criticize you and they're going to say something mean,

  218. and you're gonna feel discouraged.

  219. You need to be encouraged.

  220. There are thousands of verses in the Bible that would

  221. encourage you, but if you don't have it memorized, they

  222. can't come to mind. Well, I know somewhere in the

  223. Bible there's a verse that would encourage me. But if

  224. you've got it memorized, God can bring it to mind.

  225. Go pop.

  226. He brings to the mind and goes, oh wow, I'm

  227. not so discouraged anymore. Memorized verses are the best thing

  228. for overcoming temptation, because when you start to be tempted

  229. to be jealous, or you start to be tempted to

  230. be insecure, or you start to be tempted to lose

  231. your patience, or to get angry, or to lust, or

  232. any any kind of temptation in life. You start temptation

  233. to overeat or over exaggerat, or if you've got a verse,

  234. memorize for that, God could go boom and brings it

  235. to mind, and it helps you resist the temptation. Now,

  236. if you don't have anything in there, there's nothing for

  237. God to bring to mind, so it actually helps.

  238. You that way.

  239. Here's what the Bible says proverbs for don't lose sight

  240. of my words. That means, memorize them, retain them, let

  241. them penetrate deep within your heart. If you put it

  242. in your mind, God can cause you to think about

  243. it seriously, for they bring life and radiant health to

  244. anyone who discovers their meaning. So you want radiant health,

  245. you want life. Then you need to fill your mind

  246. with the truth. Let it penetrate your heart so God

  247. can bring it to mind. That's the fourth thing we're

  248. gonna do. The fifth thing we're gonna do the next

  249. next week is the fifth thing on learning to be wise,

  250. and it is this The end is now do it.

  251. Now? Do it?

  252. Okay? I listen to the truth. I enlist friends to

  253. discuss the truth. I ask questions about the truth, I

  254. remember and reinforce the truth. And now I do the truth.

  255. You don't just talk about it. You gotta do it,

  256. because if you don't do it, you're not wise, no

  257. matter how much you know of the Bible.

  258. I mean, I told you last week because.

  259. Of my back surgery, and I was unable to do

  260. all the exercise, and I gained about ten pounds this fall,

  261. and I thought, you know, I'm gonna get this back off.

  262. I'm going to get these pounds back off. And so

  263. let's say I go home and I pull out one

  264. of my favorite diet and exercise books, and tomorrow I

  265. sit back in my lazy boy chair.

  266. To read the Word about die had.

  267. An exercise, and I get my Guacamolean chips, my ham sandwich,

  268. and my thirty six ouncer. Okay, and I'm reading, and

  269. I'm going, this is so inspiring.

  270. I love this.

  271. I did.

  272. Look, man, look at that guy. Look at the abs

  273. on that guy.

  274. I love that picture. Oh Man, that's me, oh man.

  275. And have a little more guacamole, you know. And that

  276. is such a good passage. I think I'm gonna underline

  277. that passage in the book. I'm gonna highlight it. In fact,

  278. I'm gonna write a little note out to the side

  279. and say this is good, and you know, and write

  280. out in fact this passage here on getting in shape.

  281. It's so good, I'm gonna memorize it. But if I

  282. stay in a lazy boy chair, it doesn't matter. I'm

  283. a fool. I'm fooling myself. I'm deceiving myself because I'm

  284. reading the word. I'm pract I'm listening to the word,

  285. but I'm not doing the word, and it's self deception.

  286. Here's what the Bible says. Look at the here in

  287. your outline, James, Chapter one. Don't deceive yourselves by just

  288. listening to the word. Instead, put it into practice. If

  289. you listen to the word but you don't put it

  290. into practice, you're like people who look in a mirror

  291. and see themselves, but once they walk away, they forget

  292. what they look like. But if you look closely into

  293. the perfect law that sets people free, that's the Bible.

  294. If you look closely at the Bible and you keep

  295. on paying attention to it, and you don't forget it,

  296. but you put it into practice, you will be blessed.

  297. Notice the blessing comes We're not reading from doing these

  298. other things. You will be blessed by God in what

  299. you do. I said it earlier. Wisdom is a choice.

  300. You can choose to be wise. Happiness is a choice.

  301. Being close to God is a choice. Being honest is

  302. a choice. So I just shared with you the five

  303. ways to become wise for the rest of your life. Question,

  304. are you going to do anything about it? Are you

  305. gonna now do it? Are you gonna do anything about it?

  306. He said no, that was a nice message. Let's go home.

  307. If you're not gonna do anything about what I just

  308. told you, I just wasted an hour of your life,

  309. and I just wasted my breath. God does not bless

  310. good intentions. God blesses wise choices, and God says, it's

  311. your move, it's your choice. Will you do the wise thing?

  312. Father?

  313. I want to thank you for everybody who's here today,

  314. those who are watching online, those in our venues, those

  315. in our campuses. Your word is very clear that you

  316. have blessed us with so many blessings, and you have

  317. promised so many benefits. It will simple we learn to

  318. be wise I pray that many people here today will

  319. not just listen, but will take these five.

  320. Steps to l ear in to be wise. If you've never.

  321. Opened your life to Jesus Christ, said, Jesus Christ, come

  322. into my life right now, make yourself real to me, say,

  323. I want to learn to love you and trust you.

  324. And I don't understand it all, but God, I want

  325. to begin a new relationship with you this new year.

  326. Father.

  327. For those who prayed this prayer, I commit as a pastor,

  328. and I commit this church to helping them and to

  329. helping each of us become wiser.

  330. In the days ahead.

  331. I pray that you'll protect them from distractions and disturbances

  332. and delays and difficulties, protect their hearts and minds from conflict.

  333. And I pray that together we may become wiser. We

  334. could experience all you want to experience, and that we

  335. would all experienced what on earth we're here for.

  336. Pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  375. Rick with a letter from one of our listeners.

  376. Today.

  377. I want to share with you a very special testimony

  378. from one of our listeners named Marquita, and thanks to

  379. Daily Hope and your support, she recently asked Jesus Christ

  380. to be the leader of her life. Here's a story. So,

  381. Pastor Rick, I wanted to let you know that I

  382. have prayed the prayer salvation that you included in the

  383. Deepening the Eyes of Faith message. I've been listening to

  384. your messages for years. In fact, my child wouldn't even

  385. be here today if it weren't for your words. You

  386. wrote there may be accidental parents, but there are no

  387. accidental children. Well, I've given birth to a beautiful baby girl,

  388. and she's the light of my life. In fact, it

  389. now hurts to remember a time that I was fighting

  390. to decide whether I was going to have her or not.

  391. But I repeated your words throughout my pregnancy. There are

  392. accidental parents, but they're no accidental children. And although I'm

  393. a single mom today, with the support of my family,

  394. we're thriving. I want to make sure that she grows

  395. up to find her purpose and to serve God. So

  396. thanks for renewing my faith in God. And as I

  397. still try to find and fulfill my purpose, please pray

  398. for me and my child. Wow, Marquita, you are so right.

  399. God does have a plan and a purpose for every

  400. single baby. There are no accidental babies. So I want

  401. to take a moment right now and just pray for

  402. you in this broadcast. Pray for you and for your daughter. Lord,

  403. I'm asking you right now to put your hand of protection,

  404. your hand of blessing, your hand of guidance on Marquita

  405. and her daughter. And I'm praying for both of them

  406. to know your purpose, to feel your presence, to discover

  407. your power, to live in your plan for.

  408. Each of their lives. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  409. If you'd like to let Rick know how this broadcast
