  5. will help you get the courage you need to follow

  6. God's calling for your life. If you'd love to help

  7. the kids you know learn God's work, then stay with

  8. us because in just a few minutes we're going to

  9. tell you about God's big plans for me and easy

  10. to understand storybook Bible by Pastor Rick Warren. You can

  11. take a sneak peek right now by going to Pastorick

  12. dot com while you listen to today's message, or if

  13. you want, you can just text the word daily to

  14. eight hundred six hundred five thousand and four. That's the

  15. word Daily to eight hundred six hundred five thousand and four.

  16. Right now, here's Pastor Rick with part two of a

  17. message called standing Courageously for the Truth.

  18. Now in Hebrews chapter twenty five, it's up here on

  19. the screen. The Bible says Moses chose to suffer with

  20. God's people rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin.

  21. For a short time. Circle the phrase pleasures of sin

  22. and circle short.

  23. Time A think.

  24. I love about the Bible as it always tells the truth.

  25. It's honest. And the Bible says sin is fun. Notice

  26. it says pleasure of sin, sin is pleasurable. If sin

  27. wasn't fun, nobody do it. Okay, Even the Bible admits it.

  28. Sin is fun. Is it fun to eat things that

  29. are bad for you?

  30. Yes? Absolutely, okay.

  31. Is it fun to stay up really late even though

  32. you got to get up early next morning you're gonna

  33. be dead.

  34. Yes.

  35. There's a lot of things in life that aren't good

  36. for you, and they're a whole lot of fun, or

  37. they are a whole lot pleasurable. The Bible says there

  38. is pleasure in sin, but it says notice, it doesn't last,

  39. it's for a short time, And with every kick there's

  40. a kickback. There's always a payoff, and the cost of

  41. sin is far greater than the pleasure of sin. Sin

  42. is fun, there's no doubt about it. But the cost

  43. of it could be your own soul. And the cost

  44. of it could be a broken body, of broken mind,

  45. a broken heart, a broken relationship. There's always a cost

  46. to sin Galatians six Po't eight on the screen says this.

  47. Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful desires,

  48. that's hedonism, will harvest the consequences of decay and death.

  49. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest

  50. everlasting life from the Spirit. And Exodus twenty three, verse two.

  51. There on your outline. Do not follow the crowd in

  52. doing wrong. But girls just want to have fun. Yeah, yeah,

  53. there's nothing wrong with having fun. Do not follow the

  54. crowd and doing wrong. It may be fun, but it

  55. might not be right.

  56. Now.

  57. There's a third anti Christian worldview, and it is individualism, materialism, hedonism, individualism,

  58. and individualism says what I want comes first. Materialism says

  59. money is God. Hedonism says happiness is God. Individualism says

  60. I'm God and it really doesn't matter what happens to you.

  61. This is a dog eat dog world. I got to

  62. look out for number one. I'm number one, and it

  63. is a me first mentality. What I want comes first.

  64. It is a self centered lifestyle. America was built on

  65. rugged individualism. I do what I want to do, when

  66. I want to do it, and nobody can tell me

  67. not to do it. And today that has evolved into

  68. the culture of narses. Maybe you haven't realized this, but

  69. every advertisement ever created appeals to your self centeredness. We

  70. do it all for you, have it your way, you

  71. deserve a break today. It's all about you. You're great it.

  72. Think of yourself. It's all about you. In fact, they're

  73. even naming products now. We now have the iPhone and

  74. then I work on my iPad and I post a

  75. video of me on YouTube and who's the you me?

  76. It's a place to show off, and we actually creating

  77. tools that cultivate our narcissism that it's all about you.

  78. I saw a mountain dew ad the other day and

  79. it said obey your thirst hedonism. Most people don't realize

  80. that that's flat out hedonism. Do whatever you have the

  81. urge to do. Doesn't matter if it's right or wrong.

  82. You must obey your thirst. If it feels good, do it,

  83. if it makes you richer, do it. If it's all

  84. about you, you do it. But here's the issue. God

  85. didn't create you to live for you. Oh really, you

  86. think the creator of the universe thought you up so

  87. you could live a little self centered, selfish, egotistic cloud

  88. of a life that it's all about me.

  89. I don't think so.

  90. You were made for something far, far bigger than yourself.

  91. If you just live for yourself, why even get out

  92. of bed in the morning, Just mail it in? Really okay?

  93. I mean, just stay in bed, under the covers and pull.

  94. Up the sheets. Because it's all about you.

  95. That's why when I wrote purpose Driven Life and the

  96. opening sentence was it's not about you. That is the

  97. most counterculture statement you can make today, because everything on

  98. our culture says.

  99. Are you kidding me? It's all about you.

  100. Everything is about you because the world view of individualism,

  101. what I want comes first. And so if I'm married

  102. to you and you're hindering my career, bye bye, sister.

  103. I got to do what I gotta do. And if

  104. I've got an elderly parent to take care of and

  105. my elderly parent is cramping my style, bye bye parent.

  106. I have no responsibility because it's all about me. And

  107. if I want to go through a series of one

  108. night's stance, too bad. It doesn't matter if it breaks

  109. your heart. It's all about me. That is individualism at

  110. its height.

  111. Now.

  112. The Bible says this Christian worldview. Proverbs eighteen one. It

  113. is selfish and it's stupid to think only of yourself.

  114. In fact, God sent Jesus Christ not just to save

  115. us from our sins, but also to model how to live.

  116. And in Philippians too, it says this, each of you

  117. should look not only to your own interest that's counterculture,

  118. but also to the interests of others. Most people aren't

  119. doing that. Your attitude should be the same as that

  120. of Jesus Christ. See Jesus said, if you want to

  121. follow me, you got to put aside your selfish ambition.

  122. You've got to deny yourself.

  123. What.

  124. Yeah, you got to deny yourself. What in our society,

  125. that's two words you never hear. Deny yourself, Actualize yourself,

  126. serve yourself, love yourself, take care of yourself, live for yourself.

  127. Nobody in our culture.

  128. Is saying what Jesus said, deny yourself, and that Jesus

  129. taught us that God designed us for love, and love

  130. is not thinking of yourself. Love is giving yourself away,

  131. and Jesus that it is only in giving yourself away

  132. you'll ever know what it means.

  133. To really really live.

  134. Paul said, clothe yourselves and the Lord Jesus Christ, and

  135. forget about satisfying your own selfish desires. In fact, over

  136. and over in the Bible, God warns about me living

  137. a self centered life. The Bible says this in Romans

  138. two to eight, for those who are self seeking and

  139. who reject the truth. In other words, I know what

  140. the Bible says. The Bible says, do this, but I

  141. don't like that part at crimps my style. So I'm

  142. going to do this. I'm going to be self seeking

  143. and I'm going to reject the truth. I know God

  144. says to do this, and I know God says, don't

  145. do that, but I'm going to go ahead and do

  146. it anyway.

  147. For those.

  148. Who are self seeking, who reject the truth and follow evil,

  149. there will be wrath and anger. Why why does it

  150. tick off God when I'm self centered? Why does it

  151. make God mad when I live for myself?

  152. Well?

  153. Because number one, he didn't make you for that reason.

  154. But the real reason is the reason God opposes self

  155. centered living is because God is love, and the Bible

  156. says love is not selfish. God wants you to be

  157. a great lover, not a great self centered person. And

  158. the Bible says love is not selfish. When I'm sitting

  159. on the couch relaxing, reading the paper and watching TV

  160. and I see that Kay needs help and I decide

  161. to keep quiet instead of helping her. That's called being selfish.

  162. At that moment, I am being unloving because love is

  163. never selfish. When somebody asks for your help, he says, sorry,

  164. I don't have time to do it. Love is never selfish.

  165. You're listening to Pastor Rick's Daily Hope. Rick will be

  166. back in just a moment with the rest of today's lesson.

  171. your neighborhood that need to know God loves them and

  201. Christ with people around the world.

  202. You're listening to Pastor Rick's Daily Hope once again. Here's

  203. Pastor Rick Warren.

  204. Now, these world views materialism, money is God, Hedonism, happiness

  205. and pleasure is God.

  206. Individualism, I'm God. I run my own way.

  207. If I'm the master and commander of my faith, I

  208. don't need God. I'm in charge of my life. There's

  209. a fourth one. This one is the exact opposite of individualism.

  210. It's collectivism. It's called socialism.

  211. Socialism is an anti Christian worldview that says government is God.

  212. It basically says government should control everything. That's socialism. The

  213. government should be in charge of everything. Now, there's nothing

  214. wrong with government. Government is a good thing. In fact,

  215. it was invented by God. God created three institutions. He

  216. created the institution of family, he created the institution of

  217. the church, and he created the institution of government. God

  218. is not an anarchist. Everything should be done decently, in

  219. an order. There's nothing wrong with government. But here's what

  220. I've learned people who don't know God make government God.

  221. Why because they don't have any higher authority to look

  222. to meet their needs. So they want the government to

  223. meet all their needs. They're not praying to God, so

  224. the highest thing they can think of to make the

  225. world a better place, it's not the church, it's not God.

  226. It's government. It's the thing that's supposed to make everything better.

  227. So they treat government like God and say, well, how

  228. do you know that? Because I have spoken at most

  229. of the major secular elite conferences on this planet. I

  230. have spoken three times at the World Economic Forum in Davos,

  231. I've spoken to the Aspen Ideas Institute, I've spoken at

  232. the TED Conference, I've spoken at the Entertainment Gathering. I've

  233. spoken to groups of elites in Manhattan and London and Europe.

  234. And what I've discovered when I'm around sometimes I'm in

  235. a group that I'm the only person of faith in

  236. the group. And what I've discovered is this politics is

  237. the religion of people who don't know God, and for them,

  238. they treat it as everything. Now, again, there's nothing wrong

  239. with politics, it's just not the savior. And if you

  240. think any politician is going to be your savior, You're

  241. going to be deeply disappointed. You're going to be defly

  242. no matter who it is. By the way, what is

  243. the purpose of government? The Bible says there are three

  244. purposes of government, Protect freedom, insure justice, preserve peace. Protect freedom,

  245. insure justice, preserve peace. Now, if I don't have a

  246. God or anything bigger than government, then I want government

  247. to do everything else too. Now, Jesus explained the limited

  248. role of government, and he said the role of government's

  249. a good role, but its role is not to be

  250. God Matthew twenty two to twenty one. Jesus said, give

  251. to s what is Caesar's, but give to God what

  252. is god God's. Now, what do I give Caesar? What

  253. I give my government? I owe it my respect, I've

  254. got to I owe it, my taxes I owe I

  255. need to keep the law. I can't just run through

  256. red lights because I don't like that red light.

  257. I got to keep the laws.

  258. The government's role is to protect and preserve freedom and order.

  259. And so I'm to be a good citizen. I'm to

  260. be a responsible citizen. And in America, the privilege of

  261. voting is of course the right to vote is the

  262. responsibility to vote. But it says, you give to Caesar

  263. what's Caesar's, but you give to God what's God's, what's God's?

  264. What do you owe God your life? You don't know

  265. government your life, but you do owe God your life

  266. because He gave it to you. And so he says

  267. there's a limit governer and has a limit, but God

  268. owns it all. By the way, the Bible says, give

  269. the caesar. What's theess who's Caesar in a democracy? Because

  270. we don't have a king, we don't have a caesar,

  271. we don't have a dictator.

  272. Who's Caesar? And democracy? The answer is you are.

  273. You are, The voters are Caesar because we, the people

  274. in any democracy, determine the laws. The power in America

  275. does not reside with the judicial branch, or the legislative branch,

  276. or the executive branch. It resolves with the people who

  277. put those people into office.

  278. So you're the Caesar.

  279. Just through that little in for free now, I said

  280. that a lot of Christians may be on their way

  281. to heaven, but they don't have a Christian worldview. Why

  282. because they don't realize that if you're a Christian, you

  283. have dual citizenship. You have dual citizenship. Look at this

  284. verse on the screen Philippians three twenty. But our citizenship

  285. is where in Heaven says that twice in the Bible.

  286. So you have dual citizenship. I am a citizen of

  287. the United States, and I'm also a citizen of Heaven.

  288. By the way, my greater loyalty is to God, not

  289. the government. And if there is a difference between God

  290. and government, there's no question which one I'm going to

  291. side with.

  292. Now.

  293. I'm a patriot, I would die for my country. I

  294. love America, but my greater allegiance is to God, and

  295. I have dual citizenship. Every Christian should be issued a

  296. green card to remind you that you have a divided loyalty.

  297. I often get a little worried about when I hear

  298. people talk about this. God and country talk as if

  299. they're like equal, God and country, like they're equal loyalties.

  300. They are not.

  301. It's not God and country equal. It's God's way up here,

  302. my country's down here. It's important, but it's nowhere near

  303. my commitment, my relationship, and my loyalty to God. If

  304. you ever see a bumper sticker that says my country

  305. right or wrong. That is an un Christian bumper sticker.

  306. I hope you wouldn't say that if you lived in

  307. Nazi Germany. The Christian attitude toward government is my country.

  308. I'm going to make it the best I can, because

  309. as a Christian, I'm responsible to make the best of

  310. everything around me. But it is not my country right

  311. or wrong. That is making a country an idol. It's

  312. putting God in first place. Now, there are many many

  313. examples in the Bible of Christians running up against this worldview,

  314. and many examples where Christians had to choose God over government.

  315. The Jerusalem City Council tried to prevent the apostles from

  316. preaching and teaching the truth are and even speaking or

  317. even using the name Jesus.

  318. In the city of Jerusalem.

  319. In fact, they said you are forbidden to use the

  320. name Jesus in Jerusalem. And in Acts chapter five, the

  321. city council said, we gave you strict orders not to

  322. teach in this name, yet you have filled Jerusalem with

  323. your teaching. Peter and the other apostles replied, we must

  324. obey God rather than men. Another time in the chapter

  325. before they said again they threatened and said you can't

  326. use this name Jesus, and they said, we have to

  327. speak of Jesus. Most of you know that I did

  328. President Obama's inauguration prayer. What most people don't know is

  329. four years earlier, I did the inaugural prayer at the

  330. start of Bush's inauguration. Just wasn't controversial, so nobody even noticed.

  331. Besides Billy Graham, I'm the only guy who's prayed for

  332. both the Republican and a Democrat president. But both times

  333. I was told, don't use the word Jesus, don't say

  334. in Jesus name.

  335. So what do you think I did? I mean?

  371. Here's Pastor Rick with a letter from one of our listeners.

  372. I want to say thanks to all of you who

  373. are supporting Daily Hope Ministry with your financial gifts and

  374. with your prayers. I know you appreciate these notes that

  375. I get from people around the world as much as

  376. I do. Let me just share one with you from

  377. a woman named Anna who is an elementary school principal

  378. and she just wrote this your Pastor Rick. I became

  379. a principal in an elementary school at the age of

  380. twenty five. I'm now forty two.

  381. Now.

  382. We've had Rick Warren Bible series and studies at our

  383. church during the summers and I always enjoyed them so much,

  384. and I've invited many friends and relatives to visit our church.

  385. A couple years ago, I began to share your devotion

  386. Daily Hope with all of my staff members each morning.

  387. See she's a principle, she's sharing this with her staff.

  388. She said, I've seen their growth in God. I've seen

  389. the transformation in their lives and characters over these past years,

  390. and I'm amazed at the Lord's love and mercy. That

  391. doesn't mean that we haven't struggled with issues such as

  392. death and depression and disappointments and illness things like that. However,

  393. we have had our eyes on God during all of

  394. the things that have come against us, and this has

  395. made a difference. I pray with them during our staff

  396. meetings to give thanks. So, Pastor Rick, I just want

  397. to thank you for following God's calling. Even though you

  398. go through struggles and life problems just like we all do.

  399. God is with you. May the Lord continue to bless

  400. you and your beautiful family. May continue to bless you

  401. with wisdom and discernment so that you're able to share

  402. your gift with all of us. Blessings, Anna, God, bless you.

  403. Thanks for writing. I love getting these letters and you

  404. actually encouraged me, and I love the fact that as

  405. a principle, you're sharing the broadcast and you're sharing the

  406. devotionals with your staff. This makes you a partner in

  407. this ministry, and I thank you for doing that. I

  408. want to encourage everybody else's listening. Find somebody that you

  409. could share the good news with. Tell them about Daily Hope.

  410. God bless you.

  411. If you'd like to let Rick know how this broadcast
