  1. This is Pastor Rick's Daily Hope, the audio broadcast Ministry

  2. of Pastor Rick Warren. Today we continue with a series

  3. called how God Turns Setbacks into Comebacks. We're so glad

  4. that you've joined us today. Now, if you know someone

  5. who needs some encouragement right now, be sure to invite

  6. them with a text or a phone call to listen

  7. along with you. But first studies have shown the more

  8. grateful a person is, the happier they are. But it's

  9. not always easy to be thankful. That's why Pastor Rick

  10. developed the Power of Gratitude. It's a special interactive Bible

  11. study to help you grow your gratitude. You can find

  12. out more by going to Pastorick dot com while you

  13. listen to today's message. If you want, you can just

  14. text the word hope to eight hundred, six hundred five

  15. thousand and four for more information. That's the word hope

  16. to eight hundred six hundred five thousand and four. Right now,

  17. here's Pastor Rick with the final part of a message

  18. called when You're setback seems Irreversible.

  19. Philippians Chapter one in the Bible Verse nineteen Paul talks

  20. about the benefit of having people pray for you in

  21. a small group. And he says this to the Philippian Christians.

  22. Because you're praying for me and the spirit of Christ

  23. is helping me. I know that this trouble will bring

  24. my freedom circle that word freedom. What is Paul saying here,

  25. He's saying that prayer is the pathback to your comeback.

  26. Prayer is the pathback to your comeback. So you want

  27. to join a small group where you've got people praying

  28. for you when you're going through tough times. Now, you know,

  29. here at Saddleback Church and our family, we pray specifically

  30. for people in pain in all of our seven thousand

  31. plus small groups hoops. Sometimes we like to do it

  32. right here on the weekends and all of our campuses

  33. together as a large group. And I'd like to do

  34. that right now. So what I'd like everybody to do

  35. is just bow your head in all of our campuses

  36. if you buy it for a minute, and if you're

  37. going through a time of grief, or you're going through

  38. a big conflict, or you've had a big loss, are

  39. you're feeling lonely, or you're dealing with chronic pain, whatever

  40. stress you might be facing right now. A health setback,

  41. a financial setback or any kind of setback. I want

  42. to lead our entire saddle backed church family in all

  43. of our four different continents to pray together for you

  44. right now. And what I want to do as a

  45. statement of your faith with our heads bowed, no matter

  46. what campus you're at, if you are going through a

  47. major problem right now and you need prayer from your

  48. church family, I'm going to ask you to right now

  49. to just quietly stand with your head bowed. You don't

  50. have to say anything, just quietly stand with your head bowed

  51. as our entire church family prays together for you. Now.

  52. People are standing up in all of our campuses right now,

  53. and if you're sitting next to someone who stood up

  54. just now, you might want to just reach over and,

  55. you know, pat them on the back, or grab their

  56. hand and squeeze their hand, just to say we're with you.

  57. We're a family, we're in this together, and we're supporting you.

  58. Let's pray together as a church family for all of

  59. our brothers and sisters who are standing right now. Heavenly Father,

  60. we don't know all the needs that are being represented

  61. by those standing, but you do, and just as you

  62. care about them, we care about them our brothers and sisters.

  63. So thank you for creating these who are standing right now.

  64. Thank you for bringing them to be a part of

  65. our church family. We ask for.

  66. The things that the Job asked for, asking you to

  67. give these people wisdom in their situations, give them strength

  68. in their setbacks.

  69. For those who are in pain right now, give them relief.

  70. For those who are having a hard time sleeping because

  71. they're worrying, help them to sleep better. Together, as a

  72. church family, we pray that you would encourage the hearts

  73. of our friends and our family members who are standing

  74. right now, and we ask your blessing on them turn

  75. their setbacks into comebacks in Jesus's name. Amen, you may

  76. be seated if you're facing a setback. I will just

  77. say it this way. If you're facing a setback, you

  78. got to join with other people who are going to

  79. support you. Now. Here's the fourth letter of our trust, acrossteache,

  80. which is the S and that stands for surrender. Here's

  81. the fourth step, I surrender my future to God. This

  82. is exactly what Job did in his comeback. Anytime you

  83. have a loss, anytime you have a failure or set back,

  84. what paralyzes you after that is actually not grief. Grief's

  85. a good thing. What paralyzes you is fear. It's fear

  86. of the future. And sometimes when you've had a setback,

  87. people will give you the wrong advice, and that makes

  88. you even more fearful. Sometimes that wrong advice will come

  89. from friends that you've trusted, or even family members who

  90. love you can sometimes give you the wrong advice. In

  91. Job's case, he got some bad advice from his wife,

  92. and in Job chapter two, verse nine and ten, it

  93. says this Job's wife said to Job, are you still

  94. trying to maintain your integrity? Why don't you just curse

  95. God and die? Just end it. Job replies to his wife,

  96. you talk like a godless woman. Should we accept only

  97. good things from the hand of God and never accept

  98. anything bad? So in all of this Job said nothing wrong.

  99. Now notice Job's response to the problem, the setback in

  100. his life that seems irreversible, his total surrender. He says,

  101. I don't like it, I don't understand it, but God,

  102. I surrender my future to you after this major loss.

  103. In fact, he says in Job thirteen fifteen, one of

  104. the most famous verses in the Bible, where he says,

  105. even if God takes my life, I will still trust

  106. him though he slay me, I will trust him. That

  107. is surrender. That's surrender no matter what happens in my life.

  108. I may not understand it, but I belong to God

  109. and I know those things that are true that God

  110. made me, He loves me, He has his best interest,

  111. my best interest in his heart. I know that God

  112. is in control. I know that this life is not

  113. all there is. I know there's more to life than

  114. just here. And now I know that one day I'm

  115. going to eternally be with God in heaven. These are

  116. things that give me hope and comfort when I've lost everything.

  117. I know God is a good God, and I don't

  118. understand it, and it doesn't look good and it's not good,

  119. and I'm in a lot of pain. But even if

  120. God allows my life to be taken, I'm still going

  121. to trust him because I know the kind of God

  122. he is, and I know what He's got planned for

  123. me in heaven. Friends, that is the ultimate expression of

  124. a mature faith. How mature is your faith? It is

  125. like a fair weather faith that you only trust God

  126. when things are going good, Or is it a wimpy

  127. faith like a washed out baby diaper faith. Or do

  128. you have the mature faith of a man of God

  129. or a woman of God that can handle setbacks? Or

  130. do you just flip out and flake out when things

  131. go wrong?

  132. Do you?

  133. By the way, how do you know when you've got

  134. a weak faith? Do you know what the sign of

  135. a weak faith is? One word worry? Worry is the

  136. warning light that your faith is weak. Matthew six thirty

  137. two in the CEV translation says this, people who don't

  138. know God are always worrying when you have a setbacks

  139. in your life. Listen, you're either gonna worry or you're

  140. gonna worship. Worry or worship. And the more you focus

  141. your life on God, the less worry you're gonna worry

  142. during the during the setback. Now, I want you to

  143. see the fifth and final step, and uh, you've got

  144. to do this if you've had a setback that seems irreversible. Okay,

  145. here's the last way that you show your trust in

  146. God that you're relying on him. The last ty in

  147. trust is this, Well, let's first review him. Tell God

  148. exactly how you feel. That's tea. Are refuse to be bitter,

  149. You unite with people who help me focus on God

  150. as surrender every detail of my future to God and

  151. Tea is trust Jesus for every detail of my comeback.

  152. Trust Jesus for every detail of my comeback. You have

  153. to trust Jesus with every detail of your life for

  154. him to turn that setback into comeback.

  159. Did you know experts have discovered that gratitude is the

  160. healthiest human emotion. It makes you more resistant to stress

  161. and increases your overall happiness and satisfaction. In fact, study

  162. show the more grateful a person is, the happier they are.

  163. That's the power of gratitude. The Bible tells us to rejoice, always,

  164. pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances. So it's

  165. clear that God wants us to develop an attitude of gratitude.

  166. But we all know it's not always easy to feel grateful.

  167. That's why Pastoric developed a Bible study called the Power

  168. of gratitude. This innovative study is filled with scripture, teaching exercises, quotes, prayers,

  169. and journal pages. As you go through the study, you'll

  170. discover the many and often unique things you have to

  171. be grateful for every day. You'll develop the lifelong habit

  172. of expressing gratitude to God, a habit that leads to

  173. true happiness and satisfaction. Will send you Pastor Rick's Power

  174. of Gratitude Bible Study to say thanks when you give

  175. a gift to help Daily Hope take God's word to

  182. Now let's get back to today's lesson. Here on Pastor

  183. Rick's Daily Hope.

  184. Listen, you're either gonna worry or you're gonna worship. Worry

  185. or worship, And the more you focus your life on God,

  186. the less worry you're gonna worry. During the During the setback,

  187. now I want you to see the fifth and final step.

  188. And you've got to do this if you've had a

  189. setback that seems irreversible. Okay, here's the last way that

  190. you show your trust in God that you're relying on him.

  191. The last t is trust is this, Well, let's first

  192. review him. Tell God exactly how you feel. That's Tea R.

  193. Refuse to be bitter. You unite with people who helped me,

  194. focus on God as surrender every detail of my future

  195. to God. And Tea is, trust Jesus for every detail

  196. of my comeback. Trust Jesus for every detail of my comeback.

  197. You have to trust Jesus with every detail of your

  198. life for him to turn that setback into comeback. Now,

  199. you know some of you are around when this happened,

  200. but many of you were not. Many many years ago

  201. here in the saddle Back Valley, we had a devastating

  202. wildfire that spread all across the saddle Back Valley and

  203. many of our members had homes that burned down. And

  204. what was puzzling is that most of those homes that

  205. burned down actually had fire resistant roofs, so they thought

  206. that they were safe from the fiery embers. You know,

  207. when there's a fire going on, embers float through the

  208. sky and the winds take them, and when those embers

  209. land on the roofs, they set the roof on fire,

  210. and then the house burns down. In this area, many

  211. of the roofs were fire resistant and fire retardant roofs,

  212. but it still burned down. Why. Well, what happened is

  213. that many of those hot embers landed in the roof gutters,

  214. and the roof gutters were filled with dry leaves that

  215. had not been cleaned out and had piled up and

  216. piled up and piled up for months and months and months,

  217. and those leaves ignited instantly, and the fire got so

  218. hot in those roof gutters that it melted those gutters

  219. on those houses, and that fell down and burned the

  220. entire house down. Now, really, that's a parable of life.

  221. And as your pastor who loves you and does want

  222. to see your life go up and smoke, let me

  223. ask you a straightforward question. What's in the gutter of

  224. your life that's waiting for just one little spark to

  225. burn you down? What's in the gutter of your life

  226. that's waiting for just one little spark that will burn

  227. you down. On the outside, you may be look looking

  228. like you got it all together, like your front yard.

  229. It's perfectly manicured. You got great curb appeal in your life.

  230. Outwardly you look great, you look successful. But in the

  231. gutter of your life, there's some stuff that's been piling up.

  232. And it may be bitterness, and it may be worry,

  233. and it may be loneliness or confusion or tension or

  234. guilt or fear. But it's just waiting for one of

  235. those little embers to ignite, and it could burn you down. Friends,

  236. you need to give what's in that gutter, in the

  237. gutter of your life, to Jesus Christ right now, and

  238. you need to ask him to clean it out so

  239. when the fires and the storms come along, you're not vulnerable.

  240. I want you to look at what Jesus promises in

  241. John sixteen thirty three. He says, by trusting me, you

  242. will be unshakable and assured, deeply at peace in this world.

  243. You will continue to experience difficulties, but take heart, because

  244. I have conquered the world. That's the promise of Jesus Christ,

  245. and that is the path back to your comeback. Now,

  246. this is what job did when he lost everything. He

  247. lost his family, he lost his health, he lost all

  248. his wealth, he lost his prestige, he lost his power,

  249. his influence. But he trusted God, and God engineered the

  250. greatest comeback imaginable. Look at the last verse on your outline.

  251. It's Job, Chapter forty two, verse ten. The story ends

  252. like this. After Job prayed for his friends. Why was

  253. doing that? Because he knew God was going to take

  254. care of him, So he's prayed for his friends. After

  255. Job prayed for his friends, the Lord gave him success again.

  256. That's the comeback. In fact, the Lord restored to Job

  257. twice as much double of everything that he had been

  258. blessed with before. That's a comeback. God doubles what he

  259. had lost in the setback in the comeback because God

  260. is a faithful God, and Job betrusted God's goodness. Would

  261. you like to have double for your trouble? That's what

  262. happened to Job. He got double for his trouble. Well,

  263. there's only one person gonna do that, Jesus Christ. So

  264. I want to lead you in a comeback prayer. Would

  265. you bow your heads as we close together, and all

  266. of our campuses and those of you watching out line.

  267. Just bow your head and first tell God exactly how

  268. you feel about what's going on in your life. Tell

  269. him God, I'm sad, or I'm lonely, or I'm mad,

  270. or I'm frustrated, or I'm doubting. Tell God, I'm angry,

  271. I'm starting to get resentful. Tell God whatever you're feeling

  272. right now. Just do that. Be honest to God about

  273. the setback, the problems that you're facing. And with your

  274. head still a bout, I want you to now tell

  275. God that you're going to refuse to be bitter, that

  276. you're going to be better, not bitter, and that you're

  277. going to trust God for the things that you don't

  278. understand that have happened in your life. Say God, I

  279. know that was not good, but you're good and I'm

  280. going to trust your goodness even in the bad that's happened.

  281. Just do that now. Now, tell God that you're going

  282. to get serious, and I mean really serious about the

  283. you in trust, uniting with people who will help you

  284. focus on God. You need more worship in your life.

  285. You need more fellowship in your life. You need a

  286. small group in your life. You need to be more

  287. faithful in your attendance at worship, because that's where you're

  288. going to get the wisdom and the strength and the

  289. encouragement that you need. Say God, I haven't been faithful

  290. to you in worship. I haven't been faithful in fellowship,

  291. but I want to be. I want to unite with others.

  292. If you're not a member of Saddleback Church, we invite

  293. you to join us. Sign up for the next class

  294. one oh one, which is discovering my place in the

  295. Body of Christ, in the Family of God, discovering my role.

  296. We welcome you to join the membership of this church. Now.

  297. The as in trust is surrender. Say in your prayer,

  298. Dear God, I surrender my future to you. I surrender

  299. my future to you. I don't know what it is,

  300. but I surrender. I'm not going to worry about it.

  301. And finally, the last key is trust. Say Jesus, I'm

  302. going to trust you with every detail of my comeback.

  303. I trust Jesus for my comeback. I trust Jesus for

  304. my future. I trust Jesus to get me out of

  305. this mess. I'm giving every area of my life to you. Father.

  306. You hear these prayers and I ask you to bless them.

  307. And give them a sense that you have heard the

  308. prayers as they began the next step to their comeback

  309. in Jesus' name. Amen. Hi everybody, this is Rick and

  310. I hope you enjoyed today's broadcast. You know, if you

  311. just prayed that prayer for the very first time, or

  312. you just recommitted your life to Jesus again today, would

  313. you let me know about it. There's something real about

  314. sharing your commitment. So write me Rick at pastor Rick

  315. dot com and say, Rick, I prayed that prayer of commitment,

  316. I gave my life to Christ. And I'll send you

  317. some material that will help you on your journey with Jesus,

  318. and I'll also pray for you. God bless you.

  326. gratitude is the healthiest human emotion It makes you more

  327. resistant to stress and increases your overall happiness and satisfaction.

  328. In fact, studies show the more grateful a person is,

  329. the happier they are. That's the power of gratitude. The

  330. Bible tells us to rejoice, always, pray continually, and give

  331. things in all circumstances. So it's clear that God wants

  332. us to develop an attitude of gratitude. But we all

  333. know it's not always easy to feel grateful. That's why

  334. Pastor Rick developed a Bible study called The Power of Gratitude.

  348. forget to let us know which radio station.

  349. You hurt us on.

  350. Here's Pastor Rick with the closing thought.

  351. Jesus told his disciples that they should live their lives

  352. according to five specific purposes. He said, You've got to

  353. love God with all your heart. That's worship, and love

  354. your neighbors yourself. That's ministry. That's called the Great Commandment.

  355. And then Jesus said, go make disciples. That's evangelism. Baptize

  356. them into the Family of God. That's fellowship, a sign

  357. of fellowship. And then he said, teach them obay everything

  358. I've taught you. That's discipleship. And we call that the

  359. Great Commission. We believe it daily hope that a great

  360. commitment to the Great Commandment and the Great Commission will

  361. produce a great Christian, a great church, a great company,

  362. a great community. You know, I started daily Hope so

  363. I could spread the good news about Jesus, not just

  364. across America, but all around the world. And we want

  365. people to know that God's word is filled with hope

  366. and truth and the power that we need to follow

  367. Him every day is available to every single one. You

  368. know as well as I do, that the Word of

  369. God changes lives. It's a live it's active, and it

  370. bringes new life and new love into all of our lives.

  371. So wherever you listen to this, whether you listen on

  372. the website, whether you listen on a radio station, or

  373. whether you listen to a podcast, you're a part of

  374. the Daily Hope family and I need your help. We

  375. could not do this without your support. Now, you know,

  376. I don't take any funds from this broadcast. We don't

  377. have any giant million dollar donor who's giving big gifts

  378. to this. It comes from daily donations from listeners like you.

  379. We're one hundred percent listener funded. Would you continue to

  380. pray for this broadcast and would you continue to support

  381. us and let it Write to me, let me hear

  382. from you. I absolutely love reading the stories that are
