  1. Thanks for joining us here today on Pastor Rick's Daily Hope,

  2. the audio broadcast ministry of Pastor Rick Warren. Today we

  3. continue in a series called the Seven Greatest Words of Love.

  4. There are seven words in particular that Jesus spoke during

  5. his final hours on the cross that hold the keys

  6. for finding fulfillment in your life, relationships, and even your career.

  7. Right now, here's Pastor Rick with the final part of

  8. a message called the Word of Victory.

  9. In the Old Testament, the sacrificial system was the way

  10. that people said they were sorry for their sins, and

  11. there were sacrifices made. And the Bible says, now that

  12. Jesus Christ has died on the cross, there is no

  13. need to offer any more sacrifices because Jesus was the

  14. ultimate sacrifice for everything you've ever done wrong.

  15. Now, let me explain this in implication of it. Some

  16. of our.

  17. Friends, some of you right here in our church are

  18. Christians who believe about the second Coming, that for before

  19. Jesus Christ can come back, that a temple has to

  20. be built in Jerusalem and the sacrificial system restarted before

  21. Jesus can come back. But the Bible just said there's

  22. no need for any more sacrifice, so that's irrelevant. There

  23. is no need for the temple to be built.

  24. Because the sacrifice has already been made.

  25. There will never again be a need for sacrifices in

  26. the Temple in Jerusalem, never never never never never never

  27. never never never again.

  28. It doesn't have to happen.

  29. Why because the Bible says Jesus was the sacrifice and

  30. there will never ever again be any need for any

  31. other sacrifice. Now, some of you have felt guilty over

  32. something you've done wrong, and you believe God has forgiven you,

  33. but you haven't really felt God has forgiven you, and

  34. you keep trying to pay off your sin. Maybe if

  35. I go on a piece trip, that'll pay off my sin.

  36. Maybe if I go to church, that'll pay a fe

  37. off my sin. Maybe if I tie, then I can

  38. get rid of this gill. And you're trying to pay

  39. off your sin when it's already been paid for.

  40. That's good news, that is good news.

  41. The sacrifice was final, it was complete, and it is finished.

  42. To tell us Diy, there will never be anything else

  43. you could ever ever do to pay for your sins

  44. because it's already all been paid for. No need to

  45. try to keep repaying for your mistakes. I remember one

  46. time reading about a lady who was an elderly woman

  47. and she went to her insurance company and she walked

  48. in and said, how can we help.

  49. You, ma'am?

  50. She said, well, my husband died five years ago and

  51. I can't afford to keep paying his insurance life insurance premiums.

  52. I just can't afford to do it anymore. And I said, men,

  53. you don't need to. It's been paid off. It's done,

  54. and now you get to benefit from it. He died,

  55. and because he died, you are now going to benefit

  56. from his death. You don't have to pay anything anymore.

  57. And that's what Jesus did for you. Now, there's one

  58. other use of the word to tell us stye that

  59. I didn't mention, and that it was often used as

  60. a battle cry, and in war when armies would go

  61. to battle and they had won the battle and they

  62. had completely defeated the enemy, the soldiers would shout to

  63. tell us die, it's done, we're finished, it's paid in full,

  64. we won.

  65. It's all ours.

  66. And these are the last two meanings of this in

  67. your life. Number four, The fourth thing that happened when

  68. Jesus said, it is finished. Was he defeated the fear

  69. of death. He defeated the fear of death. Now this

  70. is a universal fear. Nobody is exempt from it. Everybody

  71. has some fear of death. But Jesus broke that power.

  72. And this was a battle cry. It was a shout

  73. of a victorious conqueror when he says, I have defeated death,

  74. and I have proved to you you don't have to

  75. be afraid of it, because I'm going to come back

  76. to life. And if I am the resurrection, you can

  77. be resurrected. And believing in me, death is not the end,

  78. and you don't need to fear it anymore. A couple

  79. verses Romans five seventeen, the sin of one man, Adam

  80. caused the death to.

  81. Rule over all of us.

  82. But all who received God's wonderful, gracious gift of righteousness

  83. will live in triumph over sin and death. Through this

  84. one man, Jesus Christ triumph over sin and death. Look

  85. at the next verse he Brews chapter two, fourteen fifteen.

  86. Jesus became flesh and blood by being born in human form,

  87. for only as a human being could he die, and

  88. only by dying could he break the power of the

  89. devil who had the power of death. And only in

  90. this way how Jesus died on the cross, could he

  91. deliver those set us free, deliver those that's you and me,

  92. who have lived all their lives as slaves to the

  93. fear of dying.

  94. I don't have to be afraid of death anymore. I'm

  95. not afraid of death.

  96. I can honestly say I'm afraid of pain, but I

  97. am not afraid of death, because death is just a transfer.

  98. And I know where I'm going, and i know I'm

  99. supposed to be there, not here forever, and I'm looking

  100. forward to being there since more and more of my

  101. friends and parents and relatives are there. And he breaks

  102. the fear of death, He defeats the fear of death

  103. when he says it is finished. By the way, do

  104. you know what is the symbol of this though you

  105. don't have to fear death. It's baptism. Baptism. In the Bible,

  106. every time you see the word baptism used, it's used

  107. to refer to a burial and a resurrection. The Bible

  108. says by in baptism, we're buried with Christ. And in

  109. baptism we're raised with Christ, which is why we do

  110. it the way they did it in the Bible. We

  111. don't sprinkle water, we don't pour on water. We do

  112. it the way that they did it with Jesus, because

  113. it's a picture of a death, a burial, and resurrection.

  114. Every time the word baptism is used in the Bible,

  115. it refers. In fact, the word means to put underwater baptizo.

  116. And so just as Jesus Christ died, was buried in

  117. the ground three days and rose again and broke the

  118. power of death, And we don't have to be afraid

  119. of death anymore because we know you can be resurrected

  120. from it. Jesus died, was buried three days, rose again.

  121. That you know, I take you, or one of our

  122. pastors takes you, puts you under the water, leaves you

  123. there three days, raises you. I'm just seeing if you're listening,

  124. raises you up again. And that is a symbol that

  125. I have died to my old way of life. All

  126. my sins are forgiven, they're washed away, they're forgiven, they're

  127. wiped out, and I'm being raised to live a brand

  128. new life. And I don't have to fear death all right,

  129. number five now the fifth one. And I really love

  130. this one. I appreciate it so much. Is that when

  131. Jesus Christ died for us on the cross, one of

  132. the things he said is free from that he liberates

  133. from He finished was this. He destroyed Satan's power to

  134. control me on the cross. He destroyed Satan's power to

  135. control me, to control my mind, to control my life,

  136. to control my destiny. You don't understand this, and I

  137. don't have time to get into it fully right now.

  138. But there was this cosmic war going on on the

  139. cross and God versus Satan. And from a human standpoint,

  140. when Jesus is dying on the cross and bleeding, it

  141. looks like Satan's winning. It just looks and a lot

  142. of times the world looks like Satan's winning. But God

  143. has a bigger perspective and he had Satan.

  144. Had no idea what was going on at this moment.

  145. When Jesus died on the cross, Satan thought, man, I'm good.

  146. I've put Jesus to death. I've killed the Messiah, I've

  147. killed the savior of the world. Now all of those

  148. people are gonna come to hell with me.

  149. He thought he had won he thought.

  150. Now the audacity, the foolish was thinking that you can

  151. fight God and win, because three days later Jesus arises

  152. from the dead and he says I'm back, and Satans go, oh, no,

  153. we have no idea what we've just got ours into.

  154. And one of the things that God did on the

  155. cross is he destroyed Satan's power. When Jesus said it

  156. is finished, Satan should have said I'm finished because his

  157. days are numbered. Now, let me be frank. If you

  158. don't have Jesus Christ in your life, you don't have

  159. the power God in your life. You are defenseless against

  160. the devil. He can just swip slap you around, do

  161. anything you want. You have no power on your own.

  162. You are not anywhere near as powerful as Satan. And

  163. if you don't have God's spirit in your life, you

  164. have zero defense, zero power, zero armory against Satan's while

  165. he can just whip you around, he can manipulate your emotions,

  166. he can mess with your mind, he can get you

  167. addicted to all.

  168. Kinds of stuff.

  169. He's got all kinds of power, and you are flat

  170. out powerless. You have no defense, zero, not a none

  171. against the devil. If you don't have God in your life,

  172. you have none. But when you get God's spirit in you,

  173. the Bible says, greater is He that is in you

  174. than he that is in the world.

  175. Now let me again be frank.

  176. Satan has two favorite tools to whip you around. One

  177. of them is temptation and the other is condemnation, and

  178. he loves to use them both. And the way he

  179. uses temptation is he minimizes the sense that's no big deal.

  180. Don't come on, everybody does this, you know, go ahead

  181. and do this thing, rebel against God. You're smarter than God.

  182. You know, it'll make you happy more than God does.

  183. And He's given you all these thoughts in your mind.

  184. You don't have to speak aloud. He just puts these

  185. ideas in your mind, just like God. When Satan puts

  186. an idea, it's called temptation. When God gives you an idea,

  187. it's called inspiration. When you have an idea, it's called stupidity.

  188. I'm just kidding.

  189. I'm just just kidding. But Satan's but no, this is

  190. no big deals, no big deal.

  191. And then the moment you do that particular sin, you

  192. know what he does. He reverses strategy and instead of minimizing,

  193. and he maximizes. You did that? Are you kidding me?

  194. God will never love you again. It's over. You're dead,

  195. You're done for your head. God could never use you. You'll

  196. never be blessed. What kind of person do you think

  197. you are? How big is it God that is so big?

  198. You could never never be forgiven for that? See a strategy.

  199. Minimize the sin before you do it, maximize it afterwards.

  200. Temptation, condemnation.

  201. And what did Jesus Christ do on the cross when

  202. he said his finished? He defeated temptation and condemnation. Look

  203. at this. The Bible says that Jesus destroyed the irresistible

  204. power of temptation. He now gives you the power to

  205. resist it. In fact, he promises to give it.

  206. Colossians, chapter one. God has freed.

  207. Us from the power of darkness and brought us into

  208. the kingdom of his dear son.

  209. It's a fatal blow to Satan. He said. A minute, Rick, you.

  210. Said, God has freed us from the power of darkness.

  211. And you're thinking, well, it seems to me that Satan's

  212. still pretty much alive right now. Yes, but he's on

  213. borrowed time now I've tried to think of the best

  214. illustration to explained to you the predicament that Satan is

  215. in right now, between now and the end of history.

  216. And the only thing I can give you this and

  217. it's a little gory, is from growing up. I grew

  218. up in an area that had a lot of farms,

  219. and a lot of farms raised chickens. And actually, when

  220. my parents lived in Portland, we actually had a chicken

  221. coop and we raised chickens. Now, there's sorry, this may

  222. be a little gory, but there are only two ways

  223. killed chicken. You chop its head off or you ring

  224. its neck.

  225. Okay.

  226. Now, when I was a little kid and my dad

  227. would do this ring Dad, it just grossed me out.

  228. When it became a teenager, I thought it was hilarious. Okay,

  229. it was the funniest thing I ever seen. Okay, and

  230. I just thought, wow, that come on, let me do

  231. it dad. You know, when you're a kid, you know.

  232. But but this I have seen this many, many, many

  233. times as kid growing up, that when a chicken loses

  234. its neck, either by wringing it or chopping it off,

  235. it will then run around the yard for another three

  236. or four minutes. That's where you get the phrase running

  237. like a chicken with its head cut off. He's dead

  238. and doesn't know it. It's the only illustration I could

  239. think of. And at the Cross, Jesus whacked off the

  240. head of Satan.

  241. He's running around with his head cut off. He's dead

  242. and doesn't know it.

  243. If you have Jesus Christ in your life, Satan has

  244. zero power over you except the.

  245. Areas you choose to give him.

  246. And when you choose to give in through resentment and

  247. guilt and worry and fear, then you give him what's

  248. called a foothold in your life. But otherwise he can't

  249. touch you. He cannot harm you. Satan cannot harm me.

  250. I'm hid with God in Christ, and I am protected.

  251. I'm not afraid of Satan. I am afraid of listening

  252. to some of the stupid things he says and actually

  253. believing them. I ought to be afraid of that, because

  254. he can only if you have Christ in your life.

  255. He can only affect you by suggestion. He cannot come

  256. at you.

  257. Hold on now. If you don't have God in your life,

  258. you're vulnerable. You're wide open.

  259. But when Jesus Christ died on the cross, one of

  260. the things he did was he defeated the power of

  261. Satan to manipulate you.

  262. Does Satan tent me? Yes?

  263. But I now have a p inside of me. It

  264. gives me the energy to say no, and I didn't

  265. have that power before. And then not only does he

  266. have temptation, he has condemnation.

  267. Now look at this verse, second verse.

  268. Jesus destroyed Satan's leverage to accuse you Colossians two fifteen.

  269. God took away Satan's power to accuse you. God took

  270. away Satan's power to accuse you of sin, and he

  271. openly displayed to the whole world christ triumph at the Cross,

  272. where your sins were all taken away.

  273. Now what does that mean?

  274. Before I sin, sayings it's no big deal. Then I

  275. send it's a big deal. God will never never love you,

  276. and I say, you're a liar.

  277. Go to hell. You could tell Satan to go to hell,

  278. nobody else but just Satan.

  279. Okay, his accusations don't work on you, because the Bible

  280. says there is therefore now no condemnation for those who

  281. are in Christ.

  282. Jesus.

  283. If Jesus paid for all of my sins on the cross,

  284. including the ones I haven't done yet, And Satan comes

  285. to me and says, Warren, you are such a jerk.

  286. You did this, and you did this, and you did that.

  287. I just go But it was paid for on the cross.

  288. I'm a trophy of God's grace and so are you.

  289. So his accusations don't stick. He can't manipulate me anymore

  290. by accusation. Does that make sense? And he can't manipulate

  291. you anymore, because everything you've ever done wrong and everything

  292. you ever will do wrong if you put your trust

  293. in Christ has been forgiven. And Satan goes, oh, I

  294. accuse you of this, And Jesus the defense attorney steps

  295. in and said, out of order, in admissible evidence.

  296. It's already been cleansed.

  297. It's already I canceled the payment, I paid the debt,

  298. I satisfied the justice.

  299. To tell us die.

  300. Do you understand the significance of what I'm saying. The

  301. difference between our faith and every other religion or faith

  302. in the world is the difference between just two words

  303. do and done. Every other religion says you gotta do this, this, this, this, this, this, this,

  304. gotta do do do do do in order to make.

  305. God like you Christianity.

  306. The Bible says it was all done for you on

  307. the cross. You don't have anything to it. You can't

  308. add to it. It's done to tell Ustye, it's finished.

  309. So let me summarize. Jesus fulfill the scripture what God

  310. had promised to do. He satisfied the law and in

  311. his own justice. I did what God required. He paid

  312. off the debt that I owed, a massive death that

  313. I could never possibly pay off on my own, my penalty,

  314. took my penalty. He defeated the fear of death and

  315. destroyed Satan's power to control me. Is that a reason

  316. to celebrate?

  317. Yeah?

  318. And I'm sure that the Father said, well done, well done.

  319. Now these are the five things that give us hope.

  320. This is the uniqueness of the Christian hope. These things

  321. give us hope. But not only that. There's hope for

  322. your future too. Look at the next verse. Philippians one

  323. six says this. You can be certain of this, and

  324. let me stop. Do you remember last week I talked

  325. about three kinds of hope. There's wishful hope, which is

  326. just you're just wishing. There's expectant hope. You have a

  327. reason to expect some them, and then there's certain hope.

  328. And that's the kind of hope God wants you to

  329. build your life on. This is a certainty, This is

  330. a certain hope. Right here you can be certain of this. God,

  331. who began his good work within you, will continue his

  332. work until it is finally.

  333. What circle that word start? Put an arrow by it.

  334. Who God, who began his good work in you, will

  335. continue his work in you until it is finally finished

  336. on the day when Christ Jesus comes back again. Now,

  337. is there anything in there about you doing something? No,

  338. it's all about him doing something. It's all about his work.

  339. One time I was asked by a man. I was

  340. out on the patio and I actually learned this response

  341. from a guy named L. Moody, previous generation pastor. But

  342. a man came up to me and he said, he's

  343. pretty frantic. I gus, I just want to know what

  344. do I need to do? I said, what do you mean?

  345. What do I need to do to get into heaven?

  346. And I said, sorry, you're too late. He said, are

  347. you kidding me? No, I'm sorry you're too late. What

  348. do you mean it's too late?

  349. What do I need to do? You're too late?

  350. It was all done two thousand years ago. You just

  351. need to accept it. You can't do anything to get

  352. into heaven. You couldn't be good enough to get into heaven.

  353. But you could accept what Jesus did.

  354. I started this message by saying that you're going to

  355. end your life with unfinished business.

  356. But there's one.

  357. Thing that's definitely been finished for you, and it's the

  358. last person your outline Ephesians two eight. Saving is all

  359. his idea. Saving is all his idea, and it's all

  360. his work.

  361. It's God's work.

  362. All we do is trust him enough to let him

  363. do it. It is God's gift from start to finish.

  364. Do or done, that's your choice. It's bow our heads.

  365. Would you pray this in your heart and mean it

  366. with every bone in your body. Dear Jesus Christ, thank

  367. you that you did it all. Thank you that you

  368. did it all. Everything I need to get to heaven,

  369. to be forgiven, to have a purpose for living, you

  370. did it all. Thank you for those three words, it

  371. is finished. Thank you that it's all done. Thank you

  372. that you've fulfilled the promises of God. You satisfied the

  373. justice of God. Thank you that you defeated the fear

  374. of death. Thank you that you paid off my debt.

  375. Thank you that you destroyed Satan's power to manipulate me.

  376. I want to live in those truths for the rest

  377. of my life. And I thank you that what you

  378. began in my life, you said, we can be certain

  379. that you will bring it to completion. You will finish

  380. it on the day that you return. And so really

  381. with all my heart, I thank you. And in many ways, Lord,

  382. like David said in Psalm one sixteen, what can I

  383. offer the Lord that always done for me? And you say,

  384. just offer me your heart, offer me your life. If

  385. you've never invited Christ in your life, said Jesus Christ,

  386. I ask you to come into my life and do

  387. what I cannot do for myself and could never do.

  388. I need a savior, and I know I would never

  389. be good enough to be in a perfect place. So

  390. I'm trusting you. Thank you for the work of Christ.

  391. And Jesus name. I pray this prayer.

  392. Amen, Hi, this is Pastor Rick. If you just pray
