  13. Right now, here's Pastor Rick Warren with part one of

  14. a message called Building My Life on the Bible.

  15. Jesus ended the Sermon on the Mound, the most famous

  16. sermon in the Bible, by telling a story, and he

  17. says this, There was two guys who went out and

  18. they both built homes, and they built them on different foundations.

  19. One guy went out and built his house on solid

  20. rock on that foundation, and the other guy went out

  21. and he built his house on sand. His foundation was sand.

  22. He said, Then unexpected rogue winds came, the trials in

  23. the storms of life, and a tsunami hit those homes,

  24. and the winds came, and the floods rose, and the

  25. winds beat against it, and the rains came down, and

  26. the house that was built on the shifting foundation of

  27. sand collapsed. But the house that was built on solid

  28. rock was able to withstand the storms of life, Jesus

  29. says in this After saying this story, he says this

  30. in Matthew seven thirty four twenty four. Everyone who hears

  31. these words of mine, that's the word of God, that's

  32. the Bible. Everyone who hears these words of mine and

  33. puts them into practice, and we're going to teach you

  34. how to do that, is like that wise man who

  35. built his house on the rock. So this weekend, to

  36. start us off, before we get into forty days, I

  37. want us to look at how do you do that?

  38. How do you build your life on the Bible so

  39. that you're building on solid rock, so that when the

  40. storms and trials and difficulties of your life come inevitably,

  41. that you'll be able to handle it. If you are

  42. not built on solid rock, on the foundation of something

  43. that doesn't shift, you're gonna crumble. You can't build your

  44. life on the opinions of others. You can't build your

  45. life on popular opinion. You can't build your life on culture.

  46. You must build on unchanging truth. If you have a Bible,

  47. I want you to open to James chapter one, the

  48. Book of James.

  49. Chapter one.

  50. We're going to look at verses nineteen down to verse

  51. twenty five, and I want to as we prepare for

  52. forty days in the world, to look at this subject

  53. on how do I build my life on the Bible.

  54. The answer to that is to look at the way

  55. that God wired you and shaped you.

  56. God gave you.

  57. Five senses here smell, see, taste, and touch everything you know.

  58. Everything you experience in life comes through one of those

  59. five senses. That's how you encounter life, and God wants

  60. you to learn to encounter the Bible with every one

  61. of your senses.

  62. We're going to look at this today.

  63. And these are all found in James chapter one, verses

  64. nineteen to twenty five.

  65. Now, if you're.

  66. Taking notes, the first way that I build my life

  67. on the Bible is this, I receive it with my ears.

  68. I receive it with my ears.

  69. We're talking about hearing the Bible, hearing the word of God,

  70. hearing God speak to you. The Bible tells us in

  71. Romans ten seventeen. Faith comes from hearing the message, and

  72. the message.

  73. Is heard through the Word of Christ.

  74. Every time you hear your pastor teach a message, you

  75. hear a Bible teacher, you hear a study on the radio.

  76. When you're hearing the word, your faith is being built.

  77. You're doing this first one right now. You're listening to

  78. the Word of God being taught, and that builds your faith.

  79. Faith comes by hearing the message, and the message comes

  80. through the Word of Christ. Now let's look and see

  81. what James says about this. James, Chapter one, verse nineteen.

  82. Everyone should be quick to listen. Circle that quick to listen,

  83. slow to speak, and slow to become angry. For man's

  84. anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. Therefore,

  85. get rid of all moral filth and evil that is

  86. so prevalent, and humbly accept. Circle that accept the word

  87. planted in you, which can save you. It is the

  88. word of God that saves us. If you don't hear

  89. the good news. You can't be saved. Now, he says,

  90. be quick to listen. That's using my ears, and he

  91. says accept the word. So in this passage, it's teaching

  92. us that I must receive it with my ears. Now,

  93. this interesting word, accept the word. The word in Greek

  94. decam i literally is a hospitality term. It means to

  95. welcome a stranger. It means to welcome the word. We

  96. welcome you, Lord, we welcome your word. Come on in.

  97. I'm wide open. It is an attitude of acceptance. And

  98. if you're going to get the Bible in your life,

  99. you've got to start with.

  100. Hey, I'm wide open.

  101. I got an attitude of acceptance. I welcome the word.

  102. I accept the word planted in me. Now, it says planet.

  103. It's interesting.

  104. Often through the Bible, the scripture is compared to a seed,

  105. and the seed is the Word of God, and the

  106. soil is our hearts. The parable of the soler that

  107. Jesus told teaches this story, and he says that receiving

  108. the word is actually the seed being planted in your life.

  109. Now, I'm a gardener.

  110. In fact, you could call me a farmer, because I

  111. garden massive scale. And what I do is I've learned

  112. that you can take the exact same seed and plant

  113. it in three different locations, and in one you're going

  114. to get giant tomatoes, In another you're going to get

  115. little tomatoes, and others you're not going to get anything.

  116. What's the difference. The difference is not the seed. The

  117. difference is the soil. The soil must be prepared for

  118. the seed. You got to mulch it, you got to

  119. break it up, you got to put some fertilizer in there,

  120. maybe a little miracle grow if you want to do that.

  121. You got to get it. The soil has to be prepared.

  122. This is the same thing for you here to hear God,

  123. your heart has to be prepared. You see, if you

  124. come to church and you've got up late, and you

  125. rushed in and you couldn't find a parking spot, and

  126. you were all frustrated and it was raining, and you

  127. got in and you were just really in an irritating mood,

  128. and they said, okay, God, I'm ready for you.

  129. Talk to me.

  130. You're not gonna hear God's voice. You're not in a

  131. receptive mood. That's why you can take two people to church.

  132. Sit them side by side, want to walk on and

  133. goes man, that was powerful. I really that that gave

  134. me a lot to think about. And the other person going,

  135. I didn't get anything out of that. What's the difference?

  136. Heart preparation? Now, for good reception, this passage teaches you

  137. have to have four attitudes. You remember when televisions used

  138. to have antenna's on them and you would kind of

  139. move the antenna's around to get good reception.

  140. We don't do that anymore now we do. Can you

  141. hear me? Now? Can you hear me? Now? Can you

  142. hear me now? Okay?

  143. And you're looking for good reception in order for you

  144. to hear God. Now you got to have good reception,

  145. and the Bible says that's a matter of your herd attitude.

  146. Write down these four attitudes. First, it says, I must

  147. be quiet for good reception. To hear God speak to me,

  148. I've got to be quiet. It says, be quick to

  149. listen and slow to speak. Now, you know, Kay has

  150. told me many times, Rick, when you're talking, you're not listening.

  151. At least I think that's what she said. You gotta

  152. be quiet. You can't hear God if you're talking Okay,

  153. number two, I gotta be calm, it says, and slow

  154. to become angry, be quick to listen to slow to speak,

  155. slow to become angry.

  156. Why in the world is it talking about anger?

  157. We're going to talking about the Bible here because you

  158. don't hear much when you're angry.

  159. You're listening to Pastor Rick's Daily Hope. Rick will be

  160. back in just a moment with the rest of today's lesson.

  161. If you've missed any part of today's teaching, you can

  162. listen online anytime at pastorick dot com. That's pastorick dot com.

  163. Pastor Rick says the Bible isn't meant to just inform us,

  164. It's meant to transform us. That's why it's so important

  165. to study God's Word. Maybe you've never studied the Bible

  166. and you don't even know where to start, or maybe

  167. read the Bible every day, but you're not getting all

  168. God has for you out of the time you spend

  169. with him. That's why Pastor Rick created a very special

  170. Bible study called forty Days in the Word. This life

  171. changing resource will ignite your past for God's Word and

  172. revolutionize your relationship with Jesus. The forty Days in the

  173. Word Study Kid includes six video sessions on DVD and

  174. a two hundred and six page, two color workbook. In

  175. the workbook, you'll find six easy to learn methods for

  176. reading and meditating on Scripture. These are the very methods

  177. Pastor Rick uses in his own personal daily quiet time.

  178. You'll also find interactive journaling pages and Bible verse cards

  179. with the twenty Bible versus every believer should memorize. There's

  180. even a special section called how can we know the

  181. Bible Came from God? And a guide for choosing which

  182. translation of the Bible is right for you. Will send

  183. you a copy of the Forty Days in the Word

  184. Study Kid to say thanks for your gift to help

  185. more people learn, love and live God's Word through Daily Hope.

  186. By the way, right now, when you give a gift

  187. to Daily Hope to help take the Hope of Jesus

  188. to a hurting world, generous friends of Daily Hope are

  189. going to match your gift up to fifty thousand dollars.

  190. But you only have till midnight on June thirtieth to

  191. make your gift go twice as far. Go to Pastor

  192. Rick dot com or call eight hundred six hundred at

  193. five zero zero four, and as a special thank you,

  194. we'll send you the forty days in the word Bible

  195. steady Kit. Again, that's Pastor Rick dot com or call

  196. eight hundred and six hundred at five zero zero four.

  197. Now let's get back to today's lesson. Here on Pastor

  198. Rick's Daily Hope.

  199. You see, if you come to church and you've got

  200. up late, and you rushed in and you couldn't find

  201. a parking spot, and you were all frustrated and it

  202. was raining, and you got in and you were just

  203. really in an irritating mood. They said, Okay, God, I'm

  204. ready for you talk to me. You're not gonna hear

  205. God's voice. You're not in a receptive mood. That's why

  206. you can take two people to church, them side by side,

  207. want to walk on and goes man. That was powerful.

  208. I really that gave me a lot to think about.

  209. And the other person going, I didn't get anything out

  210. of that. What's the difference? Heart preparation? Now for good reception,

  211. this passage teaches you have to have four attitudes. You

  212. remember when televisions used to have antenna's on them and

  213. you would kind of move the antenna's around to get

  214. good reception. We don't do that anymore now we do.

  215. Can you hear me now? Can you hear me?

  216. Now? Can you hear me now? Okay?

  217. And you're looking for good reception in order for you

  218. to hear God. Now, you got to have good reception,

  219. and the Bible says that's a matter of your heart attitude.

  220. Write down these four attitudes. First, it says, I must

  221. be quiet for good reception to hear God speak to me,

  222. I've got to be quiet. It says, be quick to

  223. listen and slow to speak.

  224. Now.

  225. You know, Kay has told me many times, Rick, when

  226. you're talking, you're not listening at least I think that's

  227. what she said. You gotta be quiet. You can't hear

  228. God if you're talking.

  229. Okay.

  230. Number two, I gotta be calm, it says, and slow

  231. to become angry. Be quick to listen to to speak

  232. slow to become angry. Why the world is it talking

  233. about anger? We're going to talking about the Bible here,

  234. because you don't hear much when you're angry. We don't

  235. hear much when we're upset, we don't hear. We can't

  236. really hear what somebody else is saying. When we are irritated,

  237. when we're angry, when we're uptight, When you are emotionally upset,

  238. you're defensive. On the other hand, when you are emotionally relaxed,

  239. you're quiet and you're calm, you can really hear what

  240. the other person is saying. And the same thing is

  241. true in getting into the Bible. You got to be

  242. quiet and you got to be calm. If you're going

  243. to let God speak to you in the Bible, you

  244. can be God. I got five minutes here, talk to

  245. me really quick.

  246. D d da da da.

  247. I gotta go see you later. Frantic, you're gonna you're

  248. not gonna hear God speak to you. The Bible says,

  249. be still and know that I am God. My translation

  250. to that is sit down and shut up, be quiet,

  251. and be calm. By the way, I read this week

  252. that listening actually lowers your blood pressure and speaking raises

  253. your blood pressure. So if you need to lower your

  254. blood pressure, you ought to do a little bit more listening.

  255. I need to be calm and I need to be quiet.

  256. The third thing is I need to be clean. In

  257. other words, I can't have any junk in my life.

  258. And he's sin piled up if I expect to hear

  259. God speak to me. The third thing he says is

  260. get rid of all moral filth and the evil that

  261. is so prevalent. He's saying, here, before you do the seeding,

  262. you gotta do some weeding. In other words, when I

  263. go out to plant a garden. But I don't just

  264. go out and start planting seeds. The first thing, I

  265. break up the soil. I get out all the dirt

  266. clods and ate all the rocks. I pull out all

  267. the weeds. I get that soil really ready, so it's clean,

  268. it's not full of junk. And I get it all

  269. ready for the soil. And he says, get rid of

  270. two things. Get rid of filth and get rid of evil.

  271. That's interesting this word filth in the Greek riperion. You

  272. know what it is, The word for earwax. Yeah, that's

  273. the stuff on the end of that que tip. That's gross.

  274. He says, get rid of all the earwacks. You know

  275. what he's saying here. The point is, I can't hear

  276. God If I got junk in my ear, I mentally blocked.

  277. I can't Is it God never speaks to me?

  278. Well, you probably got ear wax, emotional, spiritual, mental, ethical earwax.

  279. You can't hear God because you got junk in your life.

  280. It plugs up the sound. He says.

  281. Get rid of the filth, get rid of the evil,

  282. which is anything we know in our lives that is wrong.

  283. He says, you get rid of that before you come

  284. to me. Going back to this gardening thing, I really

  285. when I garden, I get dirty. I really actually like

  286. being in the mud, and I like getting muddy all over.

  287. And the crazy thing is is, after a day of

  288. you know, gardening and stuff like that and being totally muddy,

  289. I'll come up and Key goes, you take off all

  290. those clothes where you're going to come in the house.

  291. You're not bringing those filthy clothes in my house. Now,

  292. I think this is totally unreasonable, okay, But she doesn't

  293. want me tracking across the carpet manure. I don't know why, okay.

  294. And so she says, you know, you clean this up

  295. before you can meet with God. You need to take

  296. out some emotional garbage. You need to take out some

  297. spiritual garbage. You need to get rid of the stuff

  298. that stinks in your life. You're not going to hear God.

  299. If it's if your mind's filled with pornography, or resentment,

  300. or jealousy or any other junk.

  301. In your life, you can't hear God.

  302. Now, how do I take out the garbage?

  303. Spiritually?

  304. The Bible calls it confession. Confession simply means to agree

  305. with God that was wrong. God, You're right and I

  306. was wrong. When you say that, that's confession. When you

  307. look at something, Lord, it was wrong for me to

  308. say that to my kids. It was wrong for me

  309. to act that way toward those people.

  310. It was wrong.

  311. That's called confession. Confession means to speak the same God.

  312. I just agree with you. You're right and I'm wrong.

  313. And that's how you clean out the garbage. So I

  314. get calm, I get quiet, and I get clean. The

  315. fourth thing I need is I need to be humble. Humble,

  316. That's the fourth thing he says. He says, humbly accept

  317. the word planted in you, which can save you.

  318. And what does it mean? To be humble?

  319. Means say ready to do whatever God tells me from

  320. his word. If I come with a prideful attitude, God,

  321. you tell me what you want me to do, and

  322. then I'll decide whether I'm going to do it or not.

  323. That ain't going to work. I come humbly.

  324. Now, these are the spiritual hearing aids for the first

  325. way to get God's word in your life. I receive,

  326. I accept. I receive God's word through my ears. I

  327. hear it, and I hear it by being calm and

  328. quiet and clean and humble. Now, that's a good way

  329. to get the Word of God in your life. But

  330. if that's the only way, you're not growing very much

  331. because you forget ninety five percent of what you hear

  332. within seventy two hours. That's why I always encourage you

  333. to write take notes, because by Wednesday you would have

  334. forgotten everything I've said. Basically, So, hearing is a good

  335. way to get the Word of God in your life,

  336. but you forget ninety five percent of it. So you've

  337. got to move to the deeper ways.

  338. Now.

  339. The second way to build my life on the Bible

  340. is to read it with my eyes. I receive it

  341. with my ears, but I read it with my eyes.

  342. I read the Bible.

  343. You cannot grow without reading the Bible. James Chapter one,

  344. verse twenty two says this down to verse twenty five,

  345. don't merely listen to the word. In other words, y'ant

  346. to listen, but don't merely listen to the word, and

  347. so deceive yourselves, because you're going to forget it.

  348. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word.

  349. Of God but doesn't do what it says is like

  350. a man who looks at his face in a mirror.

  351. Now notice this mirror analogy.

  352. He says, he looks at his face the reflection in

  353. a mirror, and after looking himself, he goes away and

  354. immediately forgets what he looks like. That's what happens a

  355. lot of times on Sunday. You're here a message, and

  356. by the time you get to the parking lot, you've

  357. already forgotten it. He looks in a mirror, looks at himself,

  358. but then he goes away and immediately forgets what he

  359. looks like.

  360. But here's the opposite.

  361. The man who looks intently into the perfect law that

  362. gives freedom, the Bible sets us free, and continues to

  363. do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it.

  364. He will be blessed in what he does. Now, I

  365. want you to be blessed. I want you to be

  366. blessed in ear of your life. I want God's blessing

  367. on your family, on your work, on your finances, on

  368. your health. Now, the Bible says, if you will do

  369. these five things, you will be blessed. So let's go

  370. back and circle him. Okay, you know we talked about

  371. the first one. He said listen, but here he says,

  372. don't merely listen. He says, the man who looks intently.

  373. Circle looks intently. That's one of the ways you get blessed.

  374. That's reading the Bible. Then he says and continues to

  375. do this circle the word continue. That's reviewing the Bible.

  376. And then he says, not forgetting what he's heard, that's

  377. remembering the Bible. Circle that one, not forgetting but doing it.

  378. That's responding to the Bible. He will be blessed in

  379. what he does. To be blessed, you got to do

  380. all these So we're going to look at all of

  381. them today, and we're going to cover him in more

  382. detail during forty days in the world. But let's look

  383. at him one at a time. First, it says, the

  384. person who looks intently, what's he talking about there? He's

  385. talking about reading the Bible. But when I read it,

  386. I don't read it speed read it. When I read

  387. the Bible, I read it and I reflect on it,

  388. I think about it, I ponder it, I look intently,

  389. and it says that the person who does this is

  390. it's like looking in a mirror. You know, many times

  391. the Bible is compared to a mirror. In scripture, the

  392. Bible compares itself to a mirror. What's the purpose of

  393. a mirror? The purpose of a mirror is to evaluate ourselves.

  394. This is Pastor Rick's Daily Hope. If you've missed any

  404. you give to help share the hope of Jesus worldwide

  405. will be matched up to fifty thousand dollars, So twenty

  406. five becomes fifty one hundred dollars, becomes two hundred and

  407. five hundred dollars becomes one thousand. Whatever amount you give

  408. will be doubled by the grant. But don't wait, because

  409. this opportunity will be gone at the end of this

  410. month and will miss out on any amount left over

  411. from the grant if not matched. Here's Pastor Rick to

  412. tell you more. You know, I started Daily Hope so

  413. I could spread the good news about Jesus, not just

  414. across America, but all around the world. And we want

  415. people to know that God's word is filled with hope

  416. and truth and the power that we need to follow

  417. him every day is available to every single one. You

  418. know as well as I do, that the Word of

  419. God changes lives. It's a live it's active, and it

  420. breathes new life and new love into all of our lives.

  421. So wherever you listen to this, whether you listen on

  422. the website, whether you listen on a radio station, or

  423. whether you listen to a podcast, you're a part of

  424. the Daily Hope family, and I need your help. We

  425. could not do this without your support. Now, you know,

  426. I don't take any funds from this broadcast. We don't

  427. have any giant, million dollar donor who's giving big gifts

  428. to this. It comes from donations from listeners like you.

  429. We're one hundred percent listener funded. Would you continue to

  430. pray for this broadcast and would you continue to support us?

  431. And let write to me, let me hear from you.

  432. I absolutely love reading the stories that are sent to me,

  433. So write me, pray for me, and support this ministry,

  434. and God will blame and God will bless you, and

  435. we'll get to heaven, and we'll thank God for all

  436. the people going to be in heaven because you cared.

  437. When you give a gift to Daily Hope, you're helping

  438. share the hope of Jesus with people everywhere. And right

  439. now your gift will be doubled by the fifty thousand

  440. dollars matching grant. Call eight hundred six hundred five thousand

  441. and four, or you can visit Pastorrick dot com and

  442. we'll send you pastor Ricks forty days in the word

  443. study kit to say thanks again. That's eight hundred six

  444. hundred five thousand and four or Pastorick dot com. Please

  445. be sure to join us again next time as we

  446. look into God's Word for our daily hope. This program

  447. is sponsored by Daily Hope Ministries and your generous financial support.
