  6. Transform our lives from the inside out in every area

  7. including spiritual, physical, mental, emotional, relational, financial, and vocational. Now,

  8. if you can improve in any of these areas I

  9. just mentioned, stay with us, because in just a few

  10. moments we're going to let you know how you can

  12. which includes a seven session DVD and workbook. You can

  13. take a sneak peek right now by going to pastororik

  14. dot com while you listen, and if you want, you

  15. can just text the word Daily to eight hundred, six

  16. hundred five thousand and four to out more. Right Now,

  17. here's Pastor Rick Warren with part two of a message

  18. called how to Deal with how You Feel.

  19. Satan's favorite tool. Listen to this. Satan's favorite tool in

  20. your life is negative emotions. It's his favorite tool. He

  21. will use fear to whip you around. He will use

  22. resentment and jealousy and envy to whip you around. He'll

  23. use bitterness and worry and anxiety. He'll use shame to

  24. beat you up. Satan's favorite tool is to whip you

  25. around with negative emotions. If you don't know how to

  26. manage your emotions, you are helpless against Satan. You don't

  27. want to be manipulated, so you want to learn the

  28. skill we're going to look at this weekend, because he

  29. wrecks so much havoc in our lives emotionally. First Peter

  30. five eight says this, be self controlled and alert. Be

  31. self controlled and alert your enemy. The devil prows around

  32. like a roaring lione looking for someone to vour. If

  33. you don't have self control, he will eat your lunch.

  34. So what he's saying, okay, number three, I need to

  35. manage my emotions because I want to please God. I

  36. don't want to just know that my feelings are unreliable,

  37. and I know that I don't want to be manipulated

  38. by other people, or by my old nature, or by

  39. the devil. But I also want to please God. And

  40. God cannot be God in my life if emotions are

  41. God in my life. God can't rule my life if

  42. my emotions rule my life, Jesus can't be lord of

  43. my life if my emotions are my lord of my life.

  44. If I make all my decisions simply based on how

  45. I feel, then I've made my feelings God, and then

  46. God can't be God. The Bible says in Romans eight

  47. six to eight to be control controlled by human nature

  48. results in death, but to be controlled by the spirit

  49. results in life and peace. And those who obey their

  50. old human nature cannot please God. Circle that so you

  51. can't please God if your emotions dominate your life and

  52. they are running your life, and your decisions are made

  53. based on how do I feel rather than what does

  54. God say. Finally, number four, the fourth reason I must

  55. manage my emotion is because I want to succeed in life.

  56. This is one of the number one predictors of success

  57. or failure in your life. Do you know how to

  58. manage your moods? Do you know how to deal with

  59. how you feel? Do you know how to control your emotions?

  60. If you don't learn how to do this, you will

  61. never be the success in life that God wants you

  62. to be or that you want to be. Study after

  63. study after study has shown that your emotional quotient is

  64. far more important than you're in intelligence quotient. Your IQ

  65. isn't nearly a lot of people don't have a high

  66. IQ very successful in life, but they've got good smarts

  67. in dealing with their emotions. They've got good smarts in

  68. dealing with how they feel, and as a result, they're

  69. people people. They know how to get along with others.

  70. We've all known people who live by their emotions and

  71. waste their life. They get on the MARSI, what do

  72. I feel like doing today? Well? Not much, so they

  73. don't do it much. And if you deal don't. If

  74. you only deal with how you feel and you just

  75. go based on what you're feeling, you're not going to

  76. succeed in life. You're not going to make much of

  77. your life. The Bible says in Proverbs Fight twenty three

  78. people get lost. You're talking about in life? People get

  79. lost and they die because of their foolishness and their

  80. lack of self control. How many people do you know

  81. who ruin the reputation because of their lack of self control?

  82. How many people do you know who ruined a job

  83. of opportunity because of something that happened on a stupid

  84. one night party and foolishness and party, and then all

  85. of a sudden boom. There you know, everything happened, from

  86. an unwanted pregnancy to all kinds of different things. People

  87. get lost, people die, that's the opposite of living because

  88. of their foolishness and lack of self control. Now, when

  89. you give your heart to Jesus, that includes your emotions.

  90. So when you say I gave my heart to Jesus,

  91. you gave your emotions to him to be managed by him.

  92. Because the heart is the seat of your emotions. And

  93. Jesus wants to be a lord of how you feel,

  94. not just what you think and what you do. He

  95. wants to be lord of your emotions. In fact, the

  96. Bible says this to believers verse Peter four to two.

  97. From now on, you must live the rest of your lives,

  98. the rest of your earthly lives, controlled by God's way will,

  99. not by human desires. What are human desires. It's your emotions,

  100. it's your fections, it's your the way you feel, he says,

  101. for the rest of your life. Now that you're a believer,

  102. your life is to be controlled by God's will, not

  103. by how you feel. So then how do I do that? Well?

  104. This is what I want to spend most of the

  105. time on this weekend. How do I manage an unmanageable

  106. or an unwieldy or an unwanted feeling? Well, you do

  107. three things and let's get right into it. Number one.

  108. The first thing you got to do in dealing with

  109. an emotion is you must name it. You must name it.

  110. What does that mean? I've got to identify it. I've

  111. got to be specific. I've got to pinpoint exactly what

  112. it is. You can't manage a vague feeling. You can

  113. only change control manage something that you have identified. And

  114. if you don't know but the problem is in your life,

  115. then you certainly can't work on it.

  116. You're listening to Pastor Rick's Daily Hope Rip will be

  117. back in just a moment with the rest of today's lesson.

  120. Have you ever noticed that the world has ever changing?

  125. truths that can transform every area of your life from

  126. the inside out. That's why Pastor Rick created a very

  141. five zero zero four or Pastorick dot com.

  142. Once again, here's Pastor Rick.

  143. Now, you are not as good in touch with your

  144. motions at being in touch with your emotions as you

  145. think you are. We all think we're very very much

  146. in touch with our emotions. No, we're not. Really. You

  147. may even be very emotional and still not in touch

  148. with your true emotions and why you feel the way

  149. you feel. I got a friend who's a pastor, and

  150. he and his wife having a little bit of marriage problem.

  151. They went to counseling, which is a great thing, and

  152. there's nothing wrong with that. That's a good thing to do.

  153. And he was going to count sing and he said.

  154. The counselor one of the questions asked us, so, how

  155. in touch are you with your feelings? How do you

  156. think you are? And this guy said, well, oh, I

  157. think I'm very much in touch. I'm what you call

  158. a sensitive guy, a sensitive man. And the counselor said, well,

  159. then great, tell me some of the emotions that you

  160. felt this last week. Well, you know, he couldn't name anything.

  161. He said, I couldn't come up and I was just

  162. drawing a blank when I was asked, what emotion did

  163. you feel this last week? And he said finally, I

  164. said I was tired. I was hungry, And the counselor

  165. immediately shot back, those aren't emotions, and they're not they're drives,

  166. they're not emotions, okay, and so you know he thought

  167. he was really in touch, but he really wasn't. Now

  168. we laugh at that, but I have to admit I'm

  169. often confused about my emotions. I'm often confused about how

  170. I feel. Sometimes I can't define it. I couldn't tell

  171. you the number of times I've been sitting talking to

  172. my wife and Kate will say, so, what are you

  173. feeling right now? And I go, I don't know. I

  174. don't know. You know, I don't know what. I know.

  175. I'm feeling something, but I can't put a name on it.

  176. I can't I can't identify it. I can't name it.

  177. Any of you ever feel like this? You know what

  178. I'm talking about.

  179. It is.

  180. I know I'm feeling something, but I don't know what

  181. I'm feeling, Yogi, you know. And so if you can't

  182. name it, you can't change it. You gotta name it first.

  183. Sometimes I feel like David. So I'm fifty five too.

  184. Look here on the screen, he says, my thoughts are

  185. restless and I'm confused. Well, that's the way we are

  186. a lot of times about our feelings. We're confused, and

  187. so you want to ask a couple questions. Write these

  188. two questions down. This is the first step to managing

  189. your emotions, to becoming an emotionally strong man, to become

  190. an emotionally strong woman. Ask these two questions. First, you

  191. ask what am I really feeling? That's the first question,

  192. What am I really feeling? And what I mean by

  193. that is you need to scratch beneath the serves because

  194. what you think you're feeling is often not the real feeling.

  195. Sometimes you think I'm seeing I'm feeling a little down today,

  196. I'm feeling a little discouraged, I've got the blues, I'm

  197. a little depressed, and you think that the problem is depression. No,

  198. that's not the problem. You need to ask what's making

  199. me depressed? And then you look a little bit deeper,

  200. and it was I got criticized at work and I

  201. didn't like that, or I just got laid off, or

  202. an expectation didn't happen the way I expected it to happen.

  203. And you need to look and find the disappointment or

  204. find the worry. Sometimes it's fear. Sometimes it's repressed or

  205. put down or covered up anger. So a lot of

  206. times what you think you're feeling isn't really it? You

  207. say what am I really feeling? Here? And if you'll

  208. stop and peel the onion of you go, you know, really,

  209. my irritation isn't with you, honey. My irritation was what

  210. somebody said to me right before I left work and

  211. came home. And now I'm taking it out on you.

  212. You know what I'm talking about. It's a transference there,

  213. So you say what am I really feeling? And then

  214. the other question you want to ask is what are

  215. my triggers? What triggered this? That's a good thing to say. Now,

  216. if I were to ask you to name the emotion

  217. that gives you the most trouble in your life, would

  218. you be able to meet say, oh, I know what

  219. it is. If you don't, you're not as in touch

  220. with yourself as you think you are, because you have

  221. certain emotions that trigger responses, and you have certain triggers

  222. that trigger emotions. Now, if you can't talk about it, listen,

  223. it's already out of control. If you have a fear

  224. and you're afraid to talk about it, guess what, it's

  225. already out of control. And it is actually in talking

  226. about it that you gain control and If you don't

  227. talk it out, you're going to take it out on

  228. your body. You've heard me say this before. When you

  229. swallow your emotions, your stomach keeps score. Emotions weren't meant

  230. to be swallowed. They were meant to be shared. They

  231. were meant to be shared. So you ask yourself what's

  232. the trigger and what triggered is Sometimes a trigger can

  233. be sight, In other words, I visited a particular place

  234. and I saw that, and all of a sudden, I

  235. feel very moody or very angry, or it brings up

  236. something in the past. Sometimes a smell can trigger an emotion,

  237. isn't that true? You smell something that it can make

  238. you feel warm and comfortable, or it can make you

  239. feel afraid and angry. Okay. A trigger might be something

  240. you hear, the sound of somebody's voice or a certain noise.

  241. Touch and the way someone touches you could trigger an

  242. emotional response. You need to know these things. You can't

  243. manage what you don't know. Taste. You can taste certain

  244. things and it'll send you back the childhood and you

  245. have all kinds of experiences on that. So you say,

  246. what am I What am I really feeling? And what

  247. triggered this? Now, write this down. I can't tame it

  248. until I name it. I can't tame it until I

  249. name it. I can't solve a problem that I can't identify.

  250. So as you start by naming the emotion that you're feeling,

  251. the negative emotion that you're feeling. The second thing you

  252. do that the Bible tells us do is this Challenge it?

  253. Challenge it. You challenge what you're feeling. You don't just

  254. automatically accept what you're feeling. You don't automatically assume that

  255. it's accurate. You don't automatically assume that what you feel

  256. is the truth, correct or even reality. You challenge it,

  257. is what I'm feeling? Do I really? Are things really

  258. as bad as I feel they are? Probably not? Or

  259. are things as really as good as I feel they are?

  260. Probably not? So you need to ask yourself, is you

  261. know some questions? You challenge it? Now? David, who wrote

  262. many of the psalms, often ask God to challenge his emotions.

  263. Now.

  264. That's pretty smart, since God understands you better than you do.

  265. God knows what you're feeling even when you don't know it,

  266. And God knows what triggered it, even when you don't

  267. know what triggered that emotion. And so if you say, God,

  268. I don't know what I'm feeling, I don't know where

  269. it came from, but I need your help, that's a

  270. good thing to do. David often asked God to evaluate

  271. his feelings. And since God is impartial, God can help

  272. you out. Look at this verse on the screen. The

  273. Bible says, and so I'm twenty six' to, Two Lord,

  274. cross examine. Me test my motives and my. Affections what

  275. are your? Affections there are your. Emotions test my motives

  276. and my. Feelings WHAT i? Feel what my? Affectations my?

  277. Emotions so you Ask god to help you evaluate. It

  278. but let me give you another one that's even more.

  279. Personal get a friend to help, You and that is

  280. sometimes it's best to have a friend who can challenge

  281. what you're. Feeling now you've got a pretty close friend

  282. to do. That have you given anybody in your life

  283. the permission to challenge your feelings or does everybody just

  284. have to be a yes man or yes woman to

  285. you that if you feel a certain, way there's no

  286. room For are you? Sure are you? Sure are you?

  287. Sure that's a correct. UNDERSTANDING a true friend is somebody

  288. you give permission to say are you sure about? That

  289. you give them the ability to challenge your emotion and,

  290. say you, Know, RICK i don't THINK i don't think

  291. you're thinking correctly right. NOW i don't think what you're

  292. feeling is actually. True job had a friend like. That

  293. his name Was, elfhaz and In job, fifteen verse, Twelve

  294. elifaz Asked, job why has your heart carried you? Away

  295. and why do your eyes? Flash? Now that's a poetic

  296. way of, saying how come you've run off the deep?

  297. End and why do you get so? Angry do you

  298. have anybody who can ask you that question and you

  299. wouldn't get mad at them that you know they're doing

  300. it out of. Love you need partners in your. Life

  301. you need not only a small group that's a good

  302. place to find, them but you need a spiritual, partner

  303. not a, lot just one person who you've given the

  304. right to challenge what you're feeling and, saying you know,

  305. WHAT i don't think you're thinking, correctly that's not. Right

  306. why are you going off the deep end on? This

  307. and why are you getting so angry about? It give

  308. somebody that. Permission, now let me give you three questions

  309. to ask about your own emotions when you're trying to

  310. figure out how to deal with HOW i. Feel, okay

  311. so let's say you're going let's say you're, angry or you're,

  312. upset or you're, irritated or you're, frustrated or you're depressed or.

  313. Whatever you ask three street. Questions number, one what's the real,

  314. reason the real reason That i'm feeling? This and that

  315. goes back to what we were talking. Earlier you, know

  316. maybe it's, Fear maybe it's. Worry maybe it's hooked into

  317. something that your dad said to you years and years

  318. and years, ago and when your husband said it to,

  319. you all of a, sudden, boy he gets all the

  320. wrath that you'd pent up against your dad or vice.

  321. Versa what's the real Reason i'm feeling? This second, question ask,

  322. yourself is it? True it's What i'm feeling right? Now.

  323. True there's a point Where elijah in The bible gets so, down, discouraged,

  324. depressed and he comes crying To god and he's. Complaining he, Says,

  325. God i'm beyond only one in the entire nation Of

  326. israel left serving you And god challenges. Us are you kidding?

  327. ME i got all these people who still serving. Me

  328. why are you asking acting like? That you're acting like

  329. you're the only one trying to do the right thing

  330. in the whole. World, no that's not. True so what's

  331. the real REASON i feel this? Way and in that,

  332. case he was? Tired and is it? True in that

  333. case it wasn't. True then the third, question this is really,

  334. important is What i'm feeling helping me or hurting? Me

  335. sometimes this is the simplest thing to changing an emotion

  336. by simply, saying is What i'm feeling right now going

  337. to help me get WHAT i want to? Get or

  338. is it actually going to hinder me getting for WHAT i?

  339. Get in other, words WELL i get WHAT i want

  340. by continuing to feel this. WAY a lot of feelings

  341. that we have feel, natural but they're actually they're actually self.

  342. Defeating for, instance let's say you go in and you

  343. sit down at a restaurant and the service is, slow

  344. AND i mean it's, slow and you're waiting and you're,

  345. waiting and you're waiting and waiting to be, served and

  346. then a couple comes in like fifteen minutes after you

  347. and sits down and then they get their meal before you,

  348. do and you look at your, Wife you're, going are

  349. you seeing? This you watching this? Here and you're starting

  350. to get a little, irritated and all of a sudden

  351. you feel an emotion welling up inside of. You now you,

  352. go what's the real Reason i'm feeling? This i'm? Hungry, okay,

  353. okay is it? True, yeah it's. True i'm frustrated because

  354. the service is slow, Here so that one is particularly.

  355. True but then is it helping or is it? Hurting? Okay?

  356. Question do you get better service by getting angry at a? Waitress?
