  1. Hey, friends, thanks so much for joining us today on

  2. Pastor Rick's Daily Hope, the Bible Teaching ministry of Pastor

  3. Rick Warren. We're so glad to have you with us.

  4. And today, Rick continues in his series called Transform Together,

  5. We'll dive into God's Word and discover powerful principles that

  6. can truly change our lives from the inside out spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, relationally, financially,

  7. and vocationally. You'll experience how God's truth brings real transformation

  8. to every part of your life. Okay, here's Pastor Rick

  9. with part two of a message called Transforming How I

  10. see and use money.

  11. So don't love it, don't trust it, don't waste.

  12. The fourth thing God says is don't expect it to satisfy.

  13. If you think having more will make you more happy,

  14. make you more secure, make you more important, make you

  15. mo or valuable, you are seriously misguided because it's not

  16. going to satisfy. The more you have, the more you want.

  17. Somebody asked, how are you How much does it take

  18. to make a man happy? He said, just a little

  19. bit more, as always more. Ecclesiastes, chapter five, verse ten

  20. says this in the Bible. Whoever loves money will never

  21. have enough, so he can't love it.

  22. And whoever loves wealth.

  23. Will never be satisfied with his income, because you always

  24. want more. That's why Jesus says this in Luke twelve.

  25. Guard against all kinds of greed because your life is

  26. not measured by how.

  27. Much you own.

  28. Your self worth has no connection to your net worth.

  29. Your valuables do not determine your value. So don't think

  30. I have a lot, so I'm worth a lot.

  31. No, you're not.

  32. You're worth a lot simply because Jesus died for you.

  33. God made you. Jesus died for the spirit wants to

  34. live in you. That's how much you matter to God.

  35. Now that verse we've been looking at all for seven weeks.

  36. Don't conform to the way the world thinks about any

  37. of these areas, but be transformed by the way you think.

  38. They're renewing of your mind. And so what I must

  39. look at in this story are the five things God

  40. says about money. And these are so radical, they're so revolutionary,

  41. they're so counterculture. They are the exact opposite, as I said,

  42. of everything you've been taught. But if you act on

  43. these and you remember these and you live by these,

  44. the stress level in your life is going to go

  45. down dramatically. Okay, here they are five things we learn

  46. from this story. Number one, Every day I need to

  47. remember it all belongs to God. It all belongs to God.

  48. The whole universe belongs to God. You belong to God.

  49. The heavens, the sun, the moon, the stars, the trees,

  50. the plants, the rocks, thing ever created belongs to God.

  51. You don't really own anything. What you think you own

  52. is really on loan. You didn't own it before you

  53. were born. You're not going to own it after you die.

  54. God just loans it to you for eighty years. It

  55. was loaned to somebody else before you were born. It's

  56. going to be loaned to somebody else after you die,

  57. and you get to use it while you're alive. You

  58. don't loan anything. In this story. The owner has all

  59. this property and he lets a manager take care of

  60. his property. We're all in management. You may not realize this,

  61. but you're in management. God has put some has put

  62. some things in your life under your manager. Everything you

  63. have is a gift from God. You'd have nothing if

  64. we'm for God. You wouldn't take your next breath if

  65. it weren't for God. So it's all a gift. It's

  66. God's love for you, everything, your life, your brain, your thoughts.

  67. So I worked with my hands to get this. Who

  68. do you think gave you your hands? It's all a

  69. gift from God.

  70. God. But it's all on loan.

  71. It's really God's and he's loaned it to you, and

  72. God is seeing what you're going to do with it.

  73. We're all in management now. If you'll start looking at

  74. everything in your life this way that I don't really

  75. own anything. It all belongs to God and it's just

  76. loaned to me for a while, your worry is gonna go.

  77. You see, if you go out after the service and

  78. you get in your car, you say, this isn't my car,

  79. It's God's car.

  80. And then you go home and.

  81. He say, this is God's house, not my house. And

  82. then you sit down and eat some meal on a dish,

  83. This is God's dish. And when you get in bed

  84. tonight said, this is God's bed. He's loaned it to me,

  85. and I get to use it, I get to take

  86. care of it, I get to management. But it's really

  87. God's Everything is really, God's what will happen is your

  88. worry goes down. Why Well, let's say you're driving a

  89. car in your kN accident, you get a friend or bender,

  90. and you say, hey, God, you got a dent in

  91. your car. My car. You loaned it to me, you

  92. gave me the money to get it. What do you

  93. want to do about your car?

  94. God?

  95. You want me to fix it? Your kids need bracests?

  96. Say hey, God, your kid needs braceist.

  97. What are you going to do? See, here's the point.

  98. If I'm in charge, if I'm God, if I'm the

  99. master of my fate, then I got to pay for

  100. it all. I gotta worry about where it's gonna come from.

  101. But if I'm really just a child of God, I'm

  102. just his child, and He's loaned me these things, and

  103. I'm just to manage it, I'm not responsible to pay

  104. for it all.

  105. Does that make sense?

  106. If I'm the employee and God's the employer, he is

  107. ultimately in charge of the benefits package. It all belongs

  108. to God.

  109. Now.

  110. In the first verse of this story, it says the

  111. owner enlisted a manager to take care of his property. Question,

  112. how well are you taking care of God's property? Your

  113. body belonged to you.

  114. God made it.

  115. How well are you taking care of your body, your time,

  116. your opportunities, your mind? How well are you taking care

  117. of your mind? Your talents? How well you taking care

  118. of your talents? What are you doing with whatever God

  119. has given you? It all belongs to God? And you

  120. were to make the most of what you've been given.

  121. The rest of the fact of this verse says the

  122. guy was wasting his master's possession. Anytime I waste money,

  123. I'm wasting God's money. That'll change the way you buy stuff.

  124. You know, nobody in the mall right now is going

  125. I think I'll just blow God's money on this piece

  126. of junk because I just want to have it. No,

  127. it's God's money. It'll change the way you think. Number One,

  128. it all belongs to God.

  129. Number two.

  130. Second truth to remember, and I need to remind myself

  131. of this every single day is this. God is using

  132. money to test me. God is using money to test me.

  133. He's testing all kinds of things in my life. You see,

  134. God doesn't just automatically give his blessings to anybody. He

  135. tests you first to see if you're responsible, if you

  136. can handle it, and if you can't handle it, He's

  137. he's gonna.

  138. Trust you with it.

  139. God doesn't give his spiritual power to just anybody, and

  140. he says, before I give you spiritual power, I'm gonna

  141. give you some material possessions, and I'm going to see you.

  142. If I can trust you with material possessions, then I

  143. can trust you with spiritual power. But if I can't,

  144. if you're not even managing your money, well, why in

  145. the world should I give you the stuff that really matters.

  146. This is a test. Life is a test. Life is

  147. a trust, and life is a temporary assignment. This life

  148. is preparation for the next This is the get ready stage.

  149. This is the warm up act before the real race begins.

  150. It's the first race around the track where the real

  151. race begins. This is the dress rehearsal before the real

  152. play begins, which is gonna go on for eternity. And

  153. God is testing you on earth to see what he

  154. can trust you with in eternity, and the Bible says,

  155. if you're faithful in little things, then you will be

  156. faithful and much in heaven. So God is using money

  157. to test me. And God is testing your faithfulness, and

  158. he's testing you all the time, and He's testing you

  159. every minute. And God's favorite tool to test you listen,

  160. is finances. It tests all kinds of it. In fact,

  161. it tests three things. Write these down Number one. Money tests.

  162. It shows what I love most. How I spend my

  163. money shows reveals to God and everybody else what I

  164. love most. Now, whatever you love most is what you're

  165. going to give your most time to you, and you're

  166. going to give your most money to I don't care

  167. what you say you love what you If you really

  168. want to know what you love most, look at your

  169. calendar and look at your credit card statements, because the

  170. way you spend your time and your money tells me

  171. what you love the most. When I first fell in

  172. love with Ka, I could not keep money in my pocket.

  173. It was like burning a hole in my pants.

  174. And I was constantly buying her things because I was

  175. so in love with this young woman. I just, you know,

  176. wanted to buy her stuff. And I bought her all

  177. kinds of stuff she didn't need or want. But I

  178. just thought i'd see something on TV Kitchen Magician, Oh man,

  179. she'd like that.

  180. That'd be great. I'm gonna get that.

  181. And the Oriental Walk Steamer give me two of those things, okay,

  182. all right? And you know and the Ginzu knives, oh man,

  183. we got three or four sets.

  184. Again. I was buying her stuff all the time.

  185. She said, honey, stop, you spell love give. You can

  186. give without loving, but you cannot love without giving. And

  187. so what I do with my money shows what I

  188. love most Matthew. Chapter six, Jesus says this, don't store

  189. up treasure here on earth. In other words, don't pile

  190. it up, don't hoard it. Instead, store up treasure in heaven.

  191. We'll talk about how to do that later. For wherever

  192. your treasure is, that's where what you know your heart

  193. will be. Wherever your treasures are, So wherever you want

  194. your heart to be, put your money there and you'll

  195. get interested in it. Believe me, the moment you put

  196. money into something, you get.

  197. Interested in it.

  198. Right now, most of you couldn't care less how Microsoft

  199. does as a company. But if you bought some stock,

  200. all of a sudden, you're very interested in whether that

  201. company succeeds or fail because you have just invested in it.

  202. You have put your treasure, And where your treasure is,

  203. your heart is. You couldn't care less about Toyota, But

  204. if you bought some stock in it, all of a sudden,

  205. you would want that company to succeed because where you've

  206. put your treasure, that's where your heart goes. So God

  207. is saying use God uses money to test to show

  208. what I really love most. Number two. Money shows what

  209. I really trust most. It shows what I have faith in.

  210. Am I trusting in my money for security? Or am

  211. I trusting in God for my security? Am I trusting

  212. in money for my happiness? Or am I trusting in

  213. God for my happiness? Am I trusting in money for

  214. my fulfillment to make me feel good about me? Or

  215. am I trusting in God to make me feel good

  216. about me? It shows what I trust most. It's the

  217. acid test of faith. Proverbs twenty eleven twenty eight says this,

  218. If you trust in your money, you will fall, but

  219. if you trust in God, you'll flourish like a green tree.

  220. You know if you're saying, you know, I don't really

  221. feel close to God right now. In fact, I feel

  222. pretty distant. My spiritual life is stuck at dead sinner.

  223. I got the spiritual blaws. I'm not growing. There's no

  224. power in my life. I don't feel close to God.

  225. I would challenge you to check your checkbook. You know

  226. what am I using my time and my money on.

  227. It shows what I trust and it shows what I love.

  228. Then the third thing at tests, and this is the

  229. big one that this story is about, is it shows

  230. if God can trust me. This is the This is

  231. the reverse. Then just show if I trust God. It

  232. shows if God can trust me. Because God says, I'm

  233. looking to see how well you manage material things before

  234. I give you spiritual blessings.

  235. Can I trust you with more?

  236. Are you blowing it with what little I've given you?

  237. You see?

  238. Out of control finances reveal an out of control life. Okay,

  239. unmanaged finances are a symptom of an unmanaged life. You

  240. need a manager, You need a Lord, You need a savior,

  241. you need a CEO of your life. You need God

  242. because your life has become unmanageable. Now the next verse

  243. that we're going to look there on the outline, Verses

  244. eleven and twelve. This is one of the most important

  245. scriptures in the entire Bible. When I understood this verse,

  246. when I finally understood the meaning of this verse, it's

  247. so radically changed my life about forty years ago. I

  248. never looked at money the same way again, and I

  249. got off the rat race. You know, even if you

  250. win the rat race, you're still a rat. So why

  251. do you want to run the rat race? I mean,

  252. why try to keep up with the Joneses. They just

  253. refinance and file for bankruptcy. Now here's what the Bible says,

  254. verse eleven and twelve. Listen to this very important. Whoever

  255. can be trusted with very little can be trusted with much.

  256. God's look at you. Can I trust you to give

  257. you more or not?

  258. Whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest

  259. with much. And who's ever irresponsible obviously with little or

  260. be irresponsible much? If you have not been trustworthy in

  261. handling worldly wealth, circle that phrase trustworthy and handling worldly wealth?

  262. What is that?

  263. That's a phrase that means if you're not a good

  264. money manager, if you're spending more than you make, if

  265. you're not saving for the future, if you're not investing

  266. it off, if you're working for your money instead of

  267. your money working for you, if you're not really good

  268. at managing your money, He says, who.

  269. Will trust you with true riches?

  270. And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else's property.

  271. Who will give you property.

  272. Of your own?

  273. You don't own anything here on earth. In heaven, God

  274. wants to give you your own stuff. He wants to

  275. bless you for eternity. But God says, if I can't

  276. trust you with little and what is on loan to you,

  277. why should I give you more? I mean, what if

  278. the world's wealthiest man, you were the child of the

  279. world's wealthiest man, you were warned by or somebody's daughter

  280. or son, and your dad came to you and said,

  281. one day, I want to give you everything I've got.

  282. You're going to inherit at all, but I'm not going

  283. to give it to you right now. In fact, I'm

  284. going to give you a little bit right now, just

  285. a tiny, tiny bit, and I'm going to see how

  286. well you handle it, and if you manage it well,

  287. I'm going to give you the whole thing. That's exactly

  288. what Jesus is saying right here. Who will give you your

  289. own Jesus says, how I handle money determines how much

  290. God can bless my life.

  291. I didn't say that. Jesus said it. Now.

  292. That is a mind blower When you think about it

  293. that there's a direct connection between maturity and money. There's

  294. a direct connection between spiritual power and how I handle possessions.

  295. There is a direct connection between God's blessing in my

  296. life and what I do with my bucks. You've never

  297. heard that before, but that's exactly what Jesus says, right there,

  298. there is a connection. Now here's the third truth you

  299. got to remember. And these are all important, but they

  300. build in radical First, it all belongs to God. And second,

  301. God is using money to test me. Number three, Money

  302. is a tool. Money is a tool to be used

  303. for God's purposes. Say what do you mean money is

  304. a tool? Doesn't the Bible say money is the root

  305. of all evil? No, it does not say that. It

  306. says the love of money is the root of all evil.

  307. Not money, but the love of money is the root

  308. of all evil.

  309. Okay. Money is neither good nor bad, right nor wrong.

  310. It's just there.

  311. It can be used to build great churches, or it

  312. could be used to finance drugs. It's just a tool.

  313. Luke sixteen verse nine. Notice he says, I tell you,

  314. Jesus says, use your worldly well circle.

  315. The word use.

  316. Now, remember earlier we said we're not to love it.

  317. And here he says to use it. Everybody, look up here.

  318. This is really important. The Bible says you are to

  319. love people and use money. Love people, use money. Now

  320. the problem is everybody gets that reversed. And when you

  321. start loving money you use people. You end up using

  322. people to get more money. The Bible says people are

  323. to be loved and money is to be used. And

  324. if you start loving money, you're going to start using people.

  325. God says that's bad personal foul. You're out of the game.

  326. Money is a tool to be used for God's purposes.

  327. We are to use it. We're not to hoard it.

  328. We're not the stockpilot. We're not to worship it. Somebody

  329. said money is lack manure. It said, you know, if

  330. you spread it all around, it makes things grow. But

  331. if you pile it up, it starts thinking. He's saying,

  332. use temporary resources what God has put in your hand

  333. for permanent good.

  334. What if one simple habit could transform your life forever.
