  1. This is Pastor Rick's Daily Hope, the Bible teaching ministry

  2. of Pastor Rick Warren. Today we continue in a series

  3. called Transformed. In these lessons, Rick uncovers key principles found

  4. in God's.

  5. Word that will completely.

  6. Transform our lives from the inside out in every area

  7. including spiritual, physical, mental, emotional, relational, financial, and vocational. Now,

  8. before we get started, we want to let you know

  9. that a very generous friend has given one hundred thousand

  10. dollars matching grant to Daily Hope. That means that all

  11. this month, every dollar you give to help Daily Hope

  12. share the hope of Jesus around the world will be

  13. matched up to one hundred thousand dollars. You can find

  14. out more by going to Pastorick dot com or by

  15. texting the word Daily to eight hundred six hundred five

  16. thousand and four. That's Pastor Rick, or the word Daily

  17. to eight hundred six hundred five thousand and four. Right now,

  18. here's Pastor Rick Warren with part two of a message

  19. called setting Personal Goals by Faith.

  20. Number three goals focus my energy. Another one of the

  21. reasons why you need to set goals in every air

  22. of your life is they focus your energy. They keep

  23. you from wasting time, money, reputation, energy. They keep you focused.

  24. Selection is the name of the game. Focus is the

  25. key to an effective life. It's not these fifty things

  26. I dabble in. It's this one thing I do. And

  27. the more you focus your life, the more powerful, the

  28. more effective your life is gonna be. If you spread

  29. it out and diffuse your life over a whole bunch

  30. of different things, you'll make no impact at all. But

  31. if you focus your life, it's gonna be powerful. It's

  32. gonna be strong, and it will change the world. Light

  33. diffused has no power at all, but when you focus light,

  34. it has enormous power. The sun doesn't set things on

  35. fire just because it's diffused.

  36. But I remember when I was a kid.

  37. If you take a magnifying glass, you can set grass

  38. on fire, or you can burn little bugs. I'm sure

  39. all you girls did that right. And you focus the light,

  40. it can actually start a fire. If you focus light

  41. even more, it becomes a laser. And a laser can

  42. cut through steel, and a laser can kill a cancer.

  43. I want you to live a laser life. A focused

  44. life goals focused by energy. Now the world is full

  45. of distractions. Everybody agree with that. Everybody agree that there

  46. are a lot of things to distract you. You can

  47. spend your life, you can waste your life, or you

  48. can invest your life. And the greatest use of life

  49. is to invest it in that which is going to

  50. outlast it. Now, you don't have time to do everything.

  51. You figure that one out already. You don't have time

  52. to do everything. Here's the good news. God doesn't expect

  53. you to do everything. Not everything's worth doing. And there

  54. are only a few things that are really worth doing.

  55. And the key to being effective in life as a

  56. woman of God, as a man of God, is to

  57. do what matters most and forget everything else. Goals focus

  58. my life. Paul says this in One Corinthians nine twenty six.

  59. I do not run without a goal. I fight like

  60. a boxer who is hitting something, not just the air.

  61. He said.

  62. I'm not playing around here. I'm not playing air guitar.

  63. I'm not just pretending I'm boxing.

  64. He goes.

  65. When I box, I fight to win. When I run

  66. a race, I run to win. He said, I'm not

  67. just messing around here with my life. It's too important.

  68. I'm gonna do something with my life. I'm gonna win.

  69. I want my life to bring honor and glory to God.

  70. I don't run without a goal. Some of you are

  71. running without a goal. As a result, you're just running

  72. in circles and you're caught up in the rat race.

  73. You don't want to run the rat race, because then

  74. even if you win the rat race, you're still a rat.

  75. Number four goals don't their statements of faith. Goals focus

  76. my energy. Number four goals keep me going. They give

  77. me hope to keep moving. They give me hope to endure.

  78. They give me hope to persist. You've heard me say

  79. this many times. When you're going through hell, what do

  80. you do? You keep going. You don't want to make

  81. a home in hell. You don't want to stay there

  82. and camp out overnight. When you're going through hell. You

  83. just keep on going. And the way you do that

  84. is you have a goal beyond. The Bible says Jesus

  85. endured the cross because he looked forward to the goal

  86. and the glory that was set before him.

  87. He looked beyond the pain to the payoff. You need

  88. to do this too.

  89. The Bible says that God wants to make you have hope.

  90. You see if you don't have a goal in your life,

  91. any goals in your life, you don't really have any

  92. reason to get out of.

  93. Bed in the morning.

  94. That maybe you got to eat, but really, what's why

  95. even why even why why even get out of bed?

  96. Why even live? If you don't have any goal for

  97. your life. Job says this in Job chapter six, verse eleven.

  98. I do not have the strength to endure. You ever

  99. felt like that? I just I don't know if I'm

  100. going to make it. I don't have a strength endure

  101. why next sentence, I do not have a goal that

  102. encourages me to carry on. You got to have a

  103. goal to keep you going. You know, they did a

  104. study once of the Holocaust survivors. And in World War two,

  105. you know, the Nazis killed six million Jews and many

  106. others besides yous, many Christians, Muslims, others other that they

  107. just didn't lie. And they studied those who survived the Holocaust,

  108. survived those terrible tragedies, and they discovered only one thing

  109. in common with all these people.

  110. Every one of.

  111. Them had something to look forward to. Every one of

  112. them had something waiting for them. Every one of them

  113. had something that they wanted to live for, they.

  114. Had a goal.

  115. Those who didn't have anything to live for, those who

  116. didn't have anything to look forward to, those who didn't

  117. have any goal out there, they lost hope and they

  118. simply gave up the will to live, and then they died.

  119. The second year of this church, when I was twenty

  120. six years old and pastoring.

  121. It was what I call my dark year.

  122. And I was depressed the entire year and I could

  123. barely put one foot in front of the others.

  124. And I later.

  125. Went to a doctor and got some nutritional advice and

  126. I went out, but it took a full year before

  127. I actually felt better. I was just always tired, and

  128. it was always depressed, and I was just always fearful.

  129. And you know, at that time, I wasn't thinking, God

  130. build a great church. I was thinking, can I just

  131. get through today? And I look back now and I'm

  132. grateful that I didn't give up that year, But I'm

  133. also more grateful that God didn't give up on me.

  134. And what kept me going full of through a full

  135. one year of depression.

  136. I had a goal.

  137. I had made a commitment to pastor this church for

  138. forty years, and so I held on to that even

  139. though every bone in my body wanted to give up.

  140. Do you want to know how often I felt like

  141. giving up as pastor of Saddle Backed Church? How'm often

  142. I felt like resigning? Just every Monday morning I get

  143. PMS post message syndrome. And after you've preached five or

  144. six or seven times and you're all emotionally spent, you

  145. get up the next day and you think, Man, somebody

  146. could have done a better job than that. God, I'm

  147. not that smart. You got to find somebody who can. Really,

  148. this church is too big for me. Get somebody else.

  149. Get somebody's brilliant to do this. But you just keep

  150. on keeping on white because you have a goal. You see,

  151. when you have a long term goal, long term goals

  152. keep you from being discouraged with short term setbacks. Everybody

  153. has setbacks, everybody blows it, everybody makes mistakes, everybody has failure.

  154. In fact, failure is the only way you succeed.

  155. You cannot succeed in life without failing. Why.

  156. That's why you learn what works and what doesn't work.

  157. So never called a failure, call it an education. Some

  158. of us are highly educated. We're good at failing. Now,

  159. if there's any piece of as your friend, I could

  160. say this to you. It's this learn to fail fast, okay,

  161. because you're going to fail.

  162. You're going to fail. So everybody fails. I fail all

  163. the time.

  164. You know what The key to Saddleback's growth, in our

  165. strength and our success is we fail fast and then

  166. we learn from it.

  167. Thank you so much for listening to Pastor Rick's Daily Hope.

  201. pastorick dot com that's eight hundred at six hundred five

  202. zero zero four or pastororick dot.

  203. Com once again, here's Rick.

  204. You know what the key to Saddleback's growth, in our

  205. strength and our success is we fail fast and then

  206. we learn from it.

  207. We don't waste our failures.

  208. We try something that doesn't work, we try something that

  209. doesn't work, We try something else that don't work.

  210. We try something else that don't work.

  211. We do ninety nine things that don't work. Then number

  212. one hundred works, and then we teach a seminar to

  213. other pastors and partik like we knew what we were doing,

  214. but we're not that smart.

  215. It's just trial and error.

  216. Goals keep me going, and long term goals keep me

  217. from being discouraged about short term setbacks. Now, a goal

  218. doesn't have to be big to motivate you. For instance,

  219. if you had to go to the hospital and have

  220. surgery for some reason, your first goal would simply be

  221. after surgery, can I sit up in bed? Not a

  222. very big goal, but an important one, And the second

  223. goal would can I hang my feet over the side

  224. of the bed and sit up? And then the next

  225. goal would can I get enough strength to stand up

  226. after surgery? And then a very important goal, can I

  227. have enough strength to go to the bathroom by myself?

  228. Big goal?

  229. Then next us do I have enough strength to walk

  230. around this wing of the hospital. All of those are

  231. very small goals, but they're all important goals because when

  232. to get from here to success isn't one big leap,

  233. it's many small steps, many small steps. So goal that

  234. have to be big for it to be important. It's

  235. getting you on the way. Like my goal today is

  236. to get out of bed and to eat healthy. I

  237. have a healthy breakfast. Fine, that's a good goal. As

  238. job said, I have to have a goal to encourage

  239. me to carry on. Now, you may have come this

  240. weekend and you're a little discouraged. Maybe you're feeling a

  241. little down. Maybe you're feeling you got the blues. You're down,

  242. down down, Dobie Doo down down, and everybody hates me,

  243. nobody loves me. I'm never gonna get married. I'm gonna

  244. go eat worms play the song for you here. If

  245. you're discouraged this weekend, you need to set some new goals.

  246. And that's what we're gonna to do.

  247. In the next fifty days, you need to set some

  248. new goals in these different areas. Goal setting is a

  249. spiritual responsibility. It's a statement of faith. It focuses my energy,

  250. It keeps me going. Number five, the Bible says, goals

  251. build my character.

  252. Goals build my character.

  253. Drifting doesn't build your character, but goals build your character.

  254. And if you set a goal and you get a vision.

  255. Without a vision, the Bible says that people perish. If

  256. you get a vision, you get a goal, then God

  257. says I.

  258. Can work in you. Now, listen very carefully what I'm

  259. about to say.

  260. The greatest benefit to your life over the goals you're

  261. going to set in the next fifty days. The biggest

  262. benefit to your life is not going to be the

  263. accomplishments and achievements you acquire because of those goals, but

  264. what happens inside you.

  265. While you're moving toward the goal.

  266. See, God is more interested in your character than he

  267. is in your accomplishments. You're not taking your success to heaven,

  268. You're not taking your career to heaven, but you are

  269. taking your character.

  270. So God is.

  271. More interested in who you are and what you become

  272. than he is in what you do and accomplish, and

  273. what you succeed at, God's interested in you.

  274. So here's the idea.

  275. While I'm working on the goal, God is working on me.

  276. Does that make sense?

  277. And that's what God wants to do in your life.

  278. Goals help build your character and that's what's going to

  279. last eternity. That's why Paul says in Philippians chapter three,

  280. verse twelve, I keep striving toward the goal circle. The

  281. word striving, that means it takes energy, it takes effort,

  282. it takes intention, it takes purpose in order to reach

  283. your goal. And God says that while you're doing that,

  284. while you're working on the goal, God is building character

  285. in you. You will never become the man God intends

  286. you to be unless you intend to become that man.

  287. You will never be the woman God intends for you

  288. to be unless you intend to be that person. Ten

  289. years from today, some of you you're not going to

  290. be in church. You're going to be a long way

  291. away from God. You're going to go through a failed marriage,

  292. You're gonna have all kinds of problems in your life.

  293. Why because you never intended to be a man of God.

  294. You never intended to be a woman of God. It

  295. was just kind of a casual Christianity.

  296. Yeah maybe this, Yeah, maybe that. And you never intended.

  297. You'll never become what God intends without you being intentional

  298. goals build my character. Then number six, good goals will

  299. be rewarded. Good goals will be rewarded. And if you

  300. have good goals, then there's going to be two reasons

  301. that you're rewarded. You're going to be rewarded on earth

  302. by people, and you're going to be rewarded by God

  303. in heaven. When you have a good goal, it brings respect.

  304. When you have a good goal, it brings honor when

  305. you give your life to a good goal. It builds

  306. a legacy on earth. The Bible says in Proverbs eleven

  307. twenty seven, let's read this verse aloud together.

  308. Okay, read it with me.

  309. If your goals are good, you will be respected. Circle

  310. that you will be respected. You want to be respected,

  311. then you need to set some goals that are good.

  312. The entire nation will celebrate Martin Luther King Day. Why

  313. why do we take a holiday for one guy? Because

  314. he was a man who set good goals and he

  315. didn't live for himself. He lived to fight injustice and

  316. to fight prejudice, and to fight racism, and to fight

  317. for truth. He set good goals for his life, and

  318. so he is honored with a holiday. One of the

  319. greatest honors I've ever been given in my entire life

  320. was the honor of preaching in Martin Luther King's home

  321. church on the fortieth anniversary of his death.

  322. This is Pastor Rick's daily Hope. In just a moment,

  323. Rick is going to tell you about a recent one

  324. hundred thousand dollars matching grant from a very generous listener.

  325. But first he's going to share with us how God

  326. has been using your financial gifts to help us share

  327. Christ with people around the world world.

  328. Here's Rick, Hi, friends, would it surprise you to know

  329. that there are entire groups of people who have never

  330. heard about Jesus still in our world today. I'm talking

  331. about the small tribes of less than a one hundred

  332. thousand people in many, many distant places who have never

  333. heard the name of Jesus Christ. That means there's not

  334. a single Christian among them. There is no church, they

  335. have no Bible, there is no believer. Can you imagine that?

  336. Would you help me reach these unreached, unengaged people. You know,

  337. one of the reasons I started Daily Hope was to

  338. find partners who would help us take the hope of

  339. the good news of the Gospel to the whole world,

  340. to the final frontier these unreached, unengaged tribes. Jesus wants

  341. us to witness to all nations and to all people.

  342. He never made a person he did in love. He

  343. never made a person he didn't want saved. And Jesus

  344. died so that all may be saved. But people can't

  345. follow you, Jesus. If they've never heard about him, and

  346. they've never heard of God's grace, how can they receive it?

  347. So I'm asking you to help me in this finishing

  348. the task project. Thank you for your support.

  349. You know.

  350. Daily Hope is now reaching over thirty four million people

  351. each month through Daily Hope audio teachings and our email devotionals.

  352. But we're only able to do this because of your

  353. partnership with Daily Hope. We're working together to help us

  354. fulfill the great commission. Imagine when you get to heaven,

  355. somebody comes up to you and says, I just want

  356. to thank you. I'm here because you cared enough for

  357. someone like me. You prayed and you gave, and you shared,

  358. and you sacrificed, and I'm in heaven because of you.

  359. Will that be worth it?

  360. Even as we rejoice in the success, we need to

  361. remember that there's still billions of people who need to

  362. know Jesus and we got to keep going. So I'm

  363. asking you prayerfully to consider giving the biggest gift you've

  364. ever given, or that you can can give before the

  365. end of this year. As I said, there is still

  366. about three thousand unreached people groups that have either few

  367. or no believers in them. We've been able to reach

  368. about six hundred of those tribes, making sure there's a

  369. Christian living among them who speaks their language and can

  370. help them understand the Bible. But that's just the first step.

  371. The truth is an unreached people group isn't considered reached

  372. until it has a healthy church, a body of Christ

  373. that's able to plant new churches within that group. So

  374. to help that happen, we're working on translating spiritual growth

  375. tools into about two hundred new languages for people who

  376. have virtually no Christian resources available. Think of all the

  377. Christian books you could buy at Christmas this year. Think

  378. of all the books you could pass on at birthdays.

  379. These are so available in English, but we need to

  380. translate them in all the other languages. These translations are

  381. strategic that we've selected once to share the gospel and

  382. to help disciple new believers where it is most needed

  383. right now.

  384. Now.

  385. These resources are also going to help young pastors grow

  386. and train others to build the church in their nations

  387. and in their groups. Now, we've made a lot of

  388. good progress, but we've got a lot of work ahead

  389. of us in this task. And it is a monumental vision.

  390. I can't do this by myself. I need your help.

  391. It's a timely vision, it's a global vision, but every

  392. vision listen requires provision. Honestly, we wouldn't be able to

  393. do any of this vision without you, and that's why

  394. I cannot fully express how much I appreciate your financial

  395. support of Daily Hope. You know I don't take a

  396. salary in this. This is all a ministry of love

  397. and all of these funds are going to help reach

  398. more people.

  399. Now, let me give you some exciting news.

  400. A generous friend of Daily Hope has offered a one

  401. hundred thousand dollars matching grant, so that any gift you

  402. give by December thirty first this year will be doubled

  403. up to one hundred thousand dollars. That means every dollar

  404. you give the Daily Hope between now and the end

  405. of the year will be doubled. Would you please prayerfully

  406. consider how you can give today, how you can reach

  407. more people for Jesus in the coming year.

  408. And please, while you're at.

  409. It, pray that I will faithfully teach God's word in

  410. a way that will penetrate hearts. Pray for our Daily

  411. Hope team as they coordinate our outreach, and most of all,

  412. pray for the people we're trying to reach that their

  413. hearts will be prepared to hear the message of the

  414. good News of Christ, and that they will come to

  415. know the grace of God and grow and mature in

  416. their Christian faith. You have a part of the most

  417. important task in history.

  418. Now.

  419. My prayer for you is a God's gonna bless you

  420. throughout this coming year, and that He will bless you

  421. so much that you can be a blessing to others.

  422. You know, we're blessed to be a blessing, and my

  423. prayers that He will draw you closer and closer to Him.

  424. God bless you.
