  1. Now.

  2. There are a lot of changes in life, but I

  3. want to look today at the kind of changes that

  4. you can't control. And of course everybody would agree that

  5. the world is changing. About the only thing you can

  6. predict accurately about the future is this. It's going to change.

  7. Tomorrow will be different than today. We don't know what

  8. it's going to be, but we do know for certain

  9. that change is an inevitable part of life, and nothing

  10. stays the same on this planet.

  11. Everything changes. And God even told.

  12. Us this was going to happen way back in the

  13. first book of the Bible, in Genesis, chapter eight, the

  14. Bible says this in verse twenty two. As long as

  15. the earth remains, it's going to be springtime and harvest,

  16. cold and heat, winter and summer, day and night. In

  17. other words, God instituted change. Things don't stay the same.

  18. It gets hot, it gets cold, it gets summer, it

  19. gets winter. There are seasons in life. Things change day

  20. and night every twenty four hours. Change is inevitable.

  21. Now.

  22. Of course, in the past thirty years here at Saddleback,

  23. I've probably seen more change on a personal level than

  24. than many people have in life, and so I want

  25. to share it today almost like a testimony. Lessons I've

  26. learned on how to not just cope with change, but

  27. how to grow through change, how to be better, how

  28. to grow through it. And I'm talking about the changes

  29. I didn't ask for, I don't like, and I don't want,

  30. and many of you are in them right now. These

  31. are principles I've gleaned from Scripture all throughout Scripture Number one,

  32. look for God in the change. Look for God in

  33. the change that.

  34. You're going through.

  35. Mother Teresa, when she used to be asked, why do

  36. you help the poorest of the poor, she said, because

  37. I see the face of Jesus in the poor, and

  38. I want to help him.

  39. You know she's right.

  40. But what I've discover is you can find the face

  41. of Jesus anywhere if you look close enough, even in

  42. the worst situations, even in something that God created that

  43. has been perverted, if you can look and see the

  44. original intent, you can see the face of Jesus around you.

  45. Jeremiah twenty nine says this verse thirteen. If you look

  46. for me in earnest, God says, you will.

  47. Find me when you seek me.

  48. If you look for me in earnest, you will find

  49. me when you seek me.

  50. Well, you know what our problem is.

  51. When change comes, we look for everything else except the Lord.

  52. We look for a quick fix, We look for an

  53. easy solution, We look for a way out, We look

  54. for comfort, we look for relief. What you need to

  55. look for is the Lord. You need to look for

  56. God when you're in the middle of a problem. You know,

  57. me just going well, you know what's the quick fix?

  58. How do I get out of this? How do I

  59. save my skin? I turn things around? That whole way

  60. is missing the point. You look for the Lord. Don't

  61. seek the comfort, don't seek the relief. Seek the Lord

  62. and you'll get all these other things, the solution, the

  63. answer to the relief, the comfort, the strength, and all

  64. that that you need. You look for God in the change.

  65. Number two, ask God for wisdom. You ask God for

  66. wisdom when you're going through a change that you didn't plan,

  67. you didn't want, you don't like you say, Lord, what

  68. do you want me to do? What do you want

  69. me to do in this situation? You know, Lord, this

  70. didn't work, My plan didn't work out. It's obviously going

  71. the way I intended. So what do you want me

  72. to do? How do you want to redirect me. How

  73. do you want to correct me? How do you want

  74. to inspect me? How do you want to perfect me?

  75. In this situation?

  76. Now?

  77. The reason you need to ask for wisdom is because

  78. in a change, your thinking has to change.

  79. Now follow me on this.

  80. To do what you've never done, you've got to think

  81. like you've never thought. To do what you've never done,

  82. you got to think like you've never thought. Old way

  83. of thinking, stinking thinking, That won't work. You're in a

  84. new situation, a new time, a new relationship, a new energy,

  85. a new development, a new commitment, a new circumstance. What

  86. you've never done, You've got to think in new ways.

  87. So you say, Lord, what do you want me to think?

  88. James one to five says, if you need wisdom, if

  89. you want to know what God wants you to do,

  90. ask him and he'll gladly tell you he will not

  91. resent your asking. And Jesus said, you know you have

  92. not because you asked that.

  93. You need to stop. Say Lord, what do you want

  94. me to do?

  95. In a situation Number three, Listen for God's whisper. Listen

  96. for God's whisper, And you've got to be quiet because

  97. he's not going to s it to you. God speaks

  98. to those who take the time to listen, but you

  99. have to be quiet and you listen. A good example

  100. of this is in First Kings, chapter nineteen. It's the

  101. story of Elijah. Elijah was up on the mountain nursing

  102. his wounds, having a pity party, hiding in a cave,

  103. and God needed to get his attention, and it says

  104. in verse eleven, then the Lord passed by and sent

  105. a furious wind, let's flit the hills and shattered the rocks.

  106. But the Lord was not in the wind.

  107. And then there was an earthquake, but the Lord was

  108. not in the earthquake. And after that there was a fire,

  109. but the Lord was not in the fire. But after

  110. the fire, there was a soft.

  111. Whisper of a voice.

  112. And when Elijah heard it, he covered his face with

  113. his cloak, and he went out and stood it the

  114. entrance of the cave. He knew this was God talking,

  115. And the voice said to him, Elijah, what are you

  116. doing here? Good ever said that to you, what are

  117. you doing here? How'd you ever end up here? I

  118. didn't plan for you to end up here? What are

  119. you doing here? I don't want you here hanging out

  120. in the cave in the mountains, saying, poor me. Everybody

  121. hates me, nobody loves me. I'm gonna go eat worms.

  122. You have a little pity party on yourself. No, God

  123. speaks in the still small voice, in the whisper. So

  124. what you need to do when you're going through change

  125. is you need to slow down your mind. You need

  126. to slow down the RPMs and say, Lord, is there

  127. anything you want to say to me? And you sit

  128. and you just listen, and you be quiet, and you

  129. let your mind slow down, and you read the word

  130. of God, and you talk to him in prayer, and

  131. you stop and you just be quiet.

  132. We need to learn to be We need.

  133. To learn to be still, get quiet, look for God

  134. in the change, Ask God for wisdom, listen for God's whisper.

  135. And number four, the.

  136. Fourth thing I've learned about change is this, don't ask

  137. why but what? Don't ask why but what? What do

  138. I need to learn? That's the question you need to ask.

  139. Don't ask why, that's the question of explanation. Ask what

  140. what do you want me to learn? That's the question

  141. of education. In fact, you might write this down. Every

  142. situation is an education Every situation is an education. It's

  143. an opportunity for you to grow and you'll either grow

  144. better or you'll grow bitter depending on your response. And

  145. what you need to do is don't focus on the circumstance,

  146. Focus on your character. Don't focus on the problem, focus

  147. on your personality. Don't focus on what's going on around you.

  148. Focus on what God wants to do in you. That's

  149. the difference. You've heard me say this many times that Earth,

  150. your time on Earth, is a character development school. God's

  151. number one purpose in your life is to make you

  152. like Christ, to grow you up, to develop true spiritual

  153. maturity character. He doesn't want you to be a spiritual

  154. baby all your life, and so what He does is

  155. he allows circumstances that teach you in the school of

  156. hard knocks. Some things you only learn through difficulty. Some

  157. things you only learn to experience it yourself. And you're

  158. not taking your career to heaven, so that doesn't really

  159. matter to God. You're not taking your cash to heaven.

  160. That doesn't really matter to God. You're not taking your house,

  161. or your clothes, or even your reputation, but you are

  162. taking your character into eternity. What you are, what you became.

  163. You're taking that into eternity with you. Far more interested

  164. is what's happening in you than in what's happening around you?

  165. How is it changing you?

  166. As I told you earlier, pain is a good thing

  167. because pain is a teacher. It teaches us what's wrong

  168. in our lives. It teaches what needs to be changed.

  169. And I can tell you from personal experience. The greatest

  170. lessons I've learned about relationships I've learned from relational pain.

  171. The greatest things lessons I've learned about finances I've learned

  172. from financial pain. The greatest things I've learned about health

  173. I've learned from physical pain.

  174. The things that you're going through.

  175. When you get a pain in any air of your life,

  176. it's say, hey, warning sign, something's out of whack here.

  177. Emotional pain means something's out of whack with your emotions,

  178. and God is saying I want to get your attention.

  179. Don't ask why but what.

  180. God doesn't owe you an explanation for everything that happens

  181. in your life. In fact, you're not going to get it.

  182. If you had an explanation for everything, you wouldn't need

  183. any faith. Some things that happen in your life. You're

  184. never going to understand until you get to heaven. And

  185. when you get to heaven, you go, oh, okay, now

  186. I get the whole picture. I see the beginning to

  187. the end. I see the whole thing. I see what

  188. was happening here. But I will tell you this. If

  189. God has called you to do something and you say, Okay, God,

  190. I know you want me to do this, so I'm

  191. going to go do it, you need to expect opposition.

  192. There's a lot of people that don't like God and

  193. don't want God's work done. So if you try to

  194. do what God wants you to do, I guarantee you

  195. you're going to have opposition. Duh, Satan's going to oppose you. You're

  196. going to have opposition if you try to do the

  197. right thing. So what do we need to learn in life? Well,

  198. there's lots of things we need to learn in character.

  199. One thing we need to learn is contentment. Look at

  200. this next verse Philippians, chapter four. Paul says in verse twelve,

  201. I have learned this secret so that anywhere, at any time,

  202. I am content.

  203. Whoa anywhere?

  204. Anytime he says, I'm content, whether I'm full or hungry,

  205. whether I have too much or too little. I have

  206. the strength to face all conditions by the power Christ

  207. gives me. We like the second part of that verse.

  208. I can do all things to Christ is streaming with me.

  209. We don't like the first part. Learning to be content

  210. with too little or when I'm hungry. We don't like

  211. that part because contentment and character is something you learn.

  212. It doesn't come naturally. I am not by nature content.

  213. You are not by nature content by nature, I naturally

  214. want to take care of my needs.

  215. I'm not thinking about you.

  216. I'm thinking about me, my needs, my hurts, my once.

  217. How am I comfortable? Am I happy? Am I getting

  218. the pleasure I want? What's it all about me? That's

  219. natural for you, that's natural for me. You have to

  220. learn to be content. That's a spiritual development. And that's

  221. why God says, I'm going to use it all to

  222. teach you. Romans five says this verse three and four.

  223. Even in our trials and troubles, these very things will

  224. develop mature character. The trial, the problem, the circumstance, the

  225. change you're going through right now. God wants you to

  226. grow up to develop mature character. Now have you ever

  227. wondered why life is so hard. I mean, let's first

  228. just admit it. Everybody agree life is difficult. We all

  229. agree with that it is not easy. Life is not easy.

  230. It is difficult. God never said it would be easy.

  231. This is not heaven, this is earth. This is the testing,

  232. the school, this is the trial period, the warm up back.

  233. So life is not easy. Wherever there's sin, there's going

  234. to be problems. It's difficult. But why even after I

  235. give my life to the Lord and I'm really trying

  236. to do the right thing.

  237. Why is life such a struggle? Why is that? I'll

  238. tell you why.

  239. Because God wants to change us and we don't want

  240. to change. That's the real reason for all the struggle

  241. in your life. God wants to change you. He wants

  242. to grow you up. He wants you to quit being

  243. a spiritual baby. He wants you to become a godly

  244. man or a godly woman, and we.

  245. Don't want to. We want to do our thing.

  246. We want to be selfish, self centered, we want our plans,

  247. our agenda. We don't want to go with God's plan.

  248. And that's the struggle. Now, since I know that God's

  249. going to use it all for my good, what should

  250. be my response?

  251. Look to the next verse.

  252. The Bible says in First Thessalonians, chapter five down in

  253. verse eighteen, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is

  254. God's will for you in Christ Jesus. Now people say,

  255. I'm in this transition right now. I lost my job,

  256. or I lost my health, or I lost my family,

  257. or I lost this or that.

  258. What is God's will for me right now? There?

  259. It is, this is God's will for you, that you

  260. give thanks in all circumstances. To wait a minute, How

  261. in the world can I give thanks for what's happened

  262. to me?

  263. I didn't say that.

  264. Notice the Bible does not say give thanks for all circumstances,

  265. give thanks in all circumstances, not for in big difference,

  266. it says, in all circumstances, give thanks. I'm not giving

  267. thanks for the circumstance. I'm giving thanks for what else.

  268. I can give you A hundred things to be thankful

  269. for in a circumstance. I can be thankful that God

  270. is in control, that God loves me, it's not changing

  271. his plan for my life, that he will help me out,

  272. He'll give me strength, that He'll use everything for good

  273. in my life. There are all kinds of promises. I

  274. can give you one hundred things to be thankful for

  275. in the situation, not for it, but in it. And

  276. that's how you grow. That's how you grow by learning

  277. to give thanks.

  278. Lord.

  279. I don't like what's going on right now. I'm out

  280. of work, I've got no income, i got a health

  281. problem that's coming up right now, I'm in a marital conflict.

  282. All these things are happening right now. I don't like this,

  283. but I'm going to give thanks in this circumstance because

  284. I know you love me, you care for me, and

  285. all these other things that we can be thankful for.

  286. I'm still breathing, I'm alive.

  287. The fifth thing you need to do when you're facing

  288. a major change is focus on what never changes. Don't

  289. focus on the situation. Focus on what never changes now,

  290. what never changes. Three things God's love, God's promises, God's purpose.

  291. God's love for you is never going to change. God's promises,

  292. His word is always true. God is not a liar.

  293. It's never going to change. God's purpose for your life

  294. is never going to change. These three verses there on

  295. your outline. Jeremiah thirty one, I have loved you with

  296. an everlasting love Psalm thirty three. His plans endure forever,

  297. His purposes last eternally Isaiah forty. The word of God

  298. shall stand forever. God's love, God's truth, God's purposes for

  299. my life are never going to change. That's what you

  300. focus on when things are flying through the air. Number six.

  301. Don't face it alone. Don't face the change alone. Accept

  302. help from others. Now, friends, This is the exact opposite

  303. of human nature. Our tendency when we're in pain is

  304. to pull into a shell. Our tendency when things aren't

  305. going well in our lives we retreat in fear to

  306. our castle. We pull up the drawbridge, fill the moat.

  307. Really the alligators, turn on the electric fence and say,

  308. I don't want to let anybody get near me.

  309. Big mistake.

  310. That's not how you get through the change, and that's

  311. not how you grow.

  312. Through the change.

  313. What you need to do is tell other people what's

  314. happening in your life.

  315. Now.

  316. You don't have to tell everybody, but you need to

  317. tell a few close friends so well. I don't want

  318. anybody else to know that's your problem. Because there's a

  319. word for that. It's called pride. Pride it's ego, it's arrogance.

  320. I don't want anybody else to know what I'm going

  321. through right now.

  322. That's arrogance. That's pride.

  323. The Bible says God resists the proud. You're on the

  324. opposite side of God every time you get full of pride.

  325. But it says God gives grace to the humble. What

  326. you need to get through this difficult time, what you

  327. need to get through this major change in your life

  328. is God's grace. And there's only one way you get

  329. God's grace. Humble yourself. And how do you do that

  330. by sharing your need with somebody else. The Bible commands

  331. you to do that fifty one times. That says love

  332. one another and bear one another's burdens, and care for

  333. one another, pray for one another, share with one another.

  334. You're breaking the laws of God if you're not sharing

  335. your pain with anybody else. Now, you need to get

  336. a couple of Christian friends who will pray for you

  337. and encourage you.

  338. Get in that small group.

  339. You don't even have to share it with the whole group,

  340. maybe just a few people in the group. If you've

  341. got a group of you know, ten people will or more.

  342. But you need people to share it with. The Bible

  343. says this. You probably ought to have this verse memorized

  344. by now. We've dealt with it so many times Ecclesiastes four.

  345. Two are better off than one because if one of

  346. them falls down, the other can help him up. Two

  347. men can resist an attack that would defeat one man alone.

  348. If you go through this crisis by yourself, you're going

  349. to be defeated. You will be defeated. You need other people,

  350. and you're like God wired us in such a way

  351. that we need each other. No man is an island.

  352. No person ever made it on their own. And when

  353. I humble myself and I share what's going on in

  354. my life with some other people and they can pray

  355. for me and encourage me, a burden that is shared

  356. is halved, and a joy that is shared is doubled.

  357. Happens every time. Number seven, this is a real important one.

  358. Become a promise person. Build your life on the promises

  359. of God. There are over seven thousand promises in the

  360. Bible and they're there waiting to be claimed. They're like

  361. blank checks where God says, if you do this, I'll

  362. do this. If you do this, I'll do this. You

  363. need to memorize them, you need to bank on them,

  364. you need to claim them. I have been walking with

  365. the Lord now for almost fifty years, and in those

  366. fifty years I have become a promised person. I build

  367. my life on the promises of God, not the way

  368. things seem, but the way God says they will be.

  369. And when you build your life on those promises, you

  370. can handle enormous levels of stress because you're not looking

  371. at circumstances.

  372. You're looking at the word of God.

  373. One of the great promises of the Bible is the

  374. promise that God says, I'm not going to give up

  375. on you. I'm not finished with you. What I start

  376. in your life I'm going to complete. In Philippians chapter one,

  377. it says this verse six, I am sure of this

  378. and the confident. It's not a hope, not a dream,

  379. not a wish. I'm sure of this that God, who

  380. began this good work in you, will carry it on

  381. until it is finished, until the day of Jesus Christ.

  382. What God starts, he finishes in your life. God did

  383. not bring you this far just to leave you where

  384. you are. The story is not finished. The last chapter

  385. has not been written. You're still in the middle of

  386. the movie. God did not bring you this far just

  387. to leave you where you are. He says, what I've

  388. started in your life, I'm going to complete if you'll.

  389. Let me do it. One Peter five seven. Look at

  390. this verse up here on the screen. You can throw

  391. the whole weight of your.

  392. Anxiety for me. That's a whole weight, that's a lot.

  393. You can throw the whole weight of your anxieties upon him,

  394. for you are his personal concern.

  395. Did you know that? Did you know that?

  396. You are God's personal concern? And he says, you can

  397. take all that stress you're feeling, all that worry, all

  398. that anxiety, all that insecurity, just dump it on me.

  399. Philippians Chapter four talks about and the peace of God,

  400. which transcends all understanding, will keep your hearts and minds

  401. in Christ Jesus, the peace that passes all understanding. How

  402. would you like to have that kind of peace? I

  403. want that kind of peace in my life, so no

  404. matter what happens, the peace that transcends understand How do

  405. you get that kind of.

  406. Peace in your life? Here's how you get it.

  407. By trusting God in the situations you don't understand When

  408. you trust God in the situations you don't understand, you

  409. get the peace that transcends understanding. When you say to God, God,

  410. I don't get this, I don't like it, I don't

  411. understand it, but I'm going to trust you, then you

  412. get the peace that transcends understanding, because instead of looking

  413. for an explanation.

  414. You get strength.

  415. You get the strength of God, and you live each

  416. day in such a way that you're bound to fail

  417. unless God bails you out, unless God helps you. Trusting

  418. always requires risking. These are verses that I've used in

  419. dealing with change for the last thirty years. One of

  420. my favorites is this one Psalm one twelve seven. The

  421. righteous man does not fear bad news nor live in

  422. dread of what may happen, for he is settled in

  423. his mind that God will take care of him. I

  424. want you to be a godly woman. I want you

  425. to be a godly man, a righteous man, a righteous woman,

  426. so that you don't fear bad news. My happiness doesn't

  427. depend on the stock market, or the job market or

  428. anything else. I don't live in dread of what may happen,

  429. for I've settled in my mind that God is going

  430. to take care of me. Here's the last step, and

  431. it's the most important one of all. When I'm going

  432. through a change I don't like, I tell God I'll

  433. trust him no matter what, even if it's not the

  434. storybook ending, even if it doesn't turn out the way

  435. I want. I'm going to trust God no matter what.

  436. Because God is a good God. He loves me. He

  437. made me, He knows what's best for me. He created me.

  438. He has a plan for my life. Job did this

  439. when Job lost everything in his life and Job thirteen

  440. he says, though.

  441. He God slay me. Yet will I trust him? He said, God, even.

  442. If this is the end of the road, even if

  443. I don't live another day, even if I don't make it, God.

  444. I'm gonna trust you God.

  445. If you decide to take my life right now, if

  446. it's over, if my life is over, I'm still gonna

  447. trust you because I still have Heaven. That's the ultimate

  448. test of faith. Hold everything God gives you with an

  449. open hand. Anything you grab onto is going to kill you.

  450. Anything you grab onto is going to stress you out

  451. because it becomes an idol. Even good things can become

  452. an idol. And the first two commandments are no other

  453. gods before me, and no idols. And anything you grasp

  454. onto and you can't hold it with an open hand

  455. that God has given you is an idol. If God

  456. has given you something in your life and you couldn't

  457. give it up, you don't own it.

  458. It owns you. If God said to.

  459. You, I want you to break up with your boyfriend

  460. and you said I couldn't do that, you don't own it.

  461. He owns you. You need to hold it with an

  462. open hand.

  463. And when God can put one job in your hand,

  464. he could easily put another job in your hand. And

  465. if he turns on one faucet, he can turn off another.

  466. And if he turns off one, he can turn on another.

  467. And if he closes one window, he can open another window.

  468. And he closes one door, he can open another.

  469. You belong to him.

  470. And you come to the point of maturity where you say,

  471. my identity is not in my job, my identity is

  472. not in my relationships, My identity is not in my wealth.

  473. My identity is in you, Jesus Christ, and that can

  474. never be taken from me. Job one one the Lord

  475. gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the

  476. name of the Lord that's power heads. Would you pray this,

  477. Dear God, I realize there's no growth without change, no

  478. change without loss, no loss without grief, and no grief

  479. without pain. But I thank you that in all things

  480. you're working for good in my life. Even when people

  481. have intended to harm me, you meant it for good.

  482. I thank you that the purpose of what I'm going

  483. through right now is to test my faith. So I

  484. want to look for you Lord in the change. I

  485. want to seek you, not a solution, not a quick fix,

  486. not a way out. I want to ask you for wisdom. God,

  487. I need your wisdom. Forgive me for being too busy

  488. and too noisy to hear your whisper. I want to

  489. be quiet. I want to spend time with you on

  490. a daily basis. Read your word, be quiet, listen to you.

  491. Pray.

  492. Lord, help me to stop asking why and to start

  493. asking what do you want me to learn? Help me

  494. to give thanks in all circumstances, not for them, but

  495. in them, because this is your will for me, develop

  496. mature character and me grow me up. Help me to

  497. focus on that which never changes. Your love for me,

  498. your purpose for me, your promises to me, forgive me

  499. for my pride and not willing to share what I'm

  500. going through with others. You've told me you don't want

  501. me to face this alone. Help me to get into

  502. a small group and help me to share with a

  503. few people what's happening in my life so that they

  504. can bear the burdens with me. I want to become

  505. a promised person. I thank you that you who began

  506. work in my life, are going to finish what you start.

  507. That the story is not finished, that what you start

  508. you complete, that you will have the last word, and

  509. your word is good. I want to throw the whole

  510. weight of all my anxiety on you right now. Thank

  511. you that I am your personal concern. I want to

  512. be a godly man. I want to be a godly

  513. woman that is settled in my mind that you're going

  514. to take care of me. Father, I want to say

  515. to you today, no matter what happens, I'm going to

  516. trust you. No matter what the ending is. I'm going

  517. to trust you because you are a good God. You've

  518. never invited Christ in your life. Say Jesus Christ, come

  519. into my life right now and be the manager of

  520. my life.

  521. I want to learn to trust you and love you

  522. in your name. Amen,
