  1. Hello everybody, and welcome to Pastor Rick's Daily Hope. This

  2. is the Bible teaching ministry of Rick Warren. Now today

  3. we're continuing into the new year, and we're digging deeper

  4. into one of life's biggest questions, does my life really matter?

  5. In today's message, Rick's going to continue his powerful series

  6. Live Your Calling. What on Earth Am I here for?

  7. In it, you'll discover how living out God's purpose for

  8. your life brings real meaning, direction, and joy no matter

  9. where you're starting from. So sit back, relax, and here's

  10. part one of a message called Why God Made You.

  11. Mark Train once said, the two most important days in

  12. your life our number one the day you're born, and

  13. number two the day you figure out why.

  14. Why you were born.

  15. God has never created anything without a purpose. Every plant

  16. has a purpose, every star has a purpose, every animal

  17. has a purpose. God does not create things without a reason,

  18. without a purpose. And if your heart is beating and

  19. your breathing, there's a purpose for your life because God

  20. never makes anything without a purpose. And the very fact

  21. that you're alive makes your life meaningful. That God had

  22. a reason for creating you. And that's what we're gonna

  23. look at this weekend.

  24. Why God made you?

  25. Now, if you want to know the purpose of your life,

  26. you got to start with God.

  27. You can't find it on TV, you can't find it.

  28. In the movies, you can't find it. You know, reading

  29. a book, you can't find it. A lot of people say, well,

  30. the way you need to find your purpose is look within,

  31. like trust the force, Luke, look within. That doesn't work.

  32. I tried that a lot of times. Look within also

  33. has a bunch of confusion. You can't tell you what

  34. your purpose is because you didn't make you.

  35. Does that make sense?

  36. Only your creator can tell you what your purpose is.

  37. You can't tell yourself because you weren't alive when he

  38. whoever thought you up thought you up. If I were

  39. to hold up in a just in any kind of

  40. invention that you had never seen, and I held up

  41. and I said, tell me what this is? What's the

  42. purpose of this invention? You wouldn't have the slightest idea.

  43. And the only way you would know the purpose of

  44. an invention you'd never seen is either a talk to

  45. the inventor, the creator who made it, and they can

  46. tell you what it does, or b read the owner's

  47. manual the same is true for your life. The only

  48. way you're ever going to know your purpose for your life.

  49. Why you're here on this planet, what on earth you're

  50. here for? Is a talk to your creator, God who

  51. made you, and be read the Owner's Manual. Now, the

  52. Bible says this, look there on your outline. Ephesians chapter

  53. one from the Bible says, it is in Christ that

  54. we find out who we are and what we're living for.

  55. So you said, I really got to find myself. You're

  56. gonna find yourself in Christ. It is in Christ we

  57. find out who we are, what we're living for, part

  58. of the overall purpose that He God is working out

  59. in everything and everyone. The next verse, Colossians chapter one,

  60. verse sixteen says this, everything, absolutely everything, got started in

  61. Christ and finds its purpose in him. You were made

  62. by God, You were made for God. Until you understand

  63. that your life is never gonna make sense.

  64. You're gonna go through life one and what on earth

  65. am I here for? You got to start with God.

  66. Now, the Bible says that you were made to last forever.

  67. One day your heart is going to stop. That's going

  68. to be the end of your body. But it's not

  69. going to be the end of you. That's gonna be

  70. the end of your time on Earth. But it's not

  71. gonna be the end of you. God has long range

  72. plans for your life, and I'm not exaggerating, because He

  73. wants you to live forever and ever and ever and

  74. ever and ever and ever and ever. So you're gonna

  75. actually spend more time on the other side of death

  76. than you do on this time side. On this side

  77. you get eighty years at the most, maybe a hundred.

  78. That's it.

  79. That's not really a whole lot of time. After you die,

  80. you move into eternity, and you're gonna spend trillions and

  81. trillions and trillions and trillions and trillions and trillions onto

  82. infinity and beyond.

  83. For the rest of your life.

  84. So this is like a little tiny millimeter of your life.

  85. The few measly years you're here on Earth. Most of

  86. your life is gonna be on the other side. And

  87. have you ever thought about this? If God wants to

  88. take me to heaven, why doesn't he just take me

  89. there instantly? Why didn't just make me and start with

  90. me in heaven? Why does God put you on this

  91. planet for eighty years?

  92. Really? Why does he do that? Well?

  93. The Bible says, you're not ready for heaven. There are

  94. some things you need to learn, and God says, this

  95. life follow me. This life is preparation.

  96. For the next.

  97. If you want to know why you're on this planet,

  98. it is to get ready for the next life. This

  99. life is preparation for the next. This is the preschool.

  100. This is the warm up act.

  101. This is the.

  102. Get ready stage. This is the kindergarten. This is the

  103. dress rehearsal before the real show begins. This is the

  104. first lap around track before the real race begins. This

  105. is the warm up act, getting ready for eternity, because

  106. that's the real show that's gonna go on forever and

  107. ever and ever. Now, in heaven, you're going to do

  108. a number of things, and the Bible tells us what's

  109. gonna happen in heaven, and what God wants you to

  110. do here on earth is practice what you're gonna do

  111. in heaven forever, so when you get to heaven you

  112. know what to do.

  113. Now, I'm going to explain to.

  114. You this evening exactly what God wants you to practice

  115. while you're here on earth. This may be the most

  116. important message you've ever heard in your life. Because I

  117. can't think of anything more fundamental than why am I

  118. here on earth and what am I supposed to do

  119. with my life. If I only had one sermon to preach,

  120. it would be this message to teach you why God

  121. made you and what you're supposed to do with your life.

  122. God wants you to practice five things on this planet.

  123. We call them our purposes, the reasons for living.

  124. We often use the word callings. There are five callings, but.

  125. There are five things God wants you to do with

  126. your life here on earth for five reasons. He made

  127. you for five reasons. Now I want you to write

  128. these down. Number one, the first purpose of your life

  129. is this. God planned me. God planned me for his pleasure.

  130. God planned me for his pleasure. God created you just

  131. to love you. That's the whole idea. The Bible says

  132. that God is love. I've told you this many times.

  133. It doesn't say God has love. It says God is love.

  134. It is the essence of his nature, it is his character,

  135. it is who God is. God is love. And if

  136. God wasn't a God of love, you would not be

  137. able to love anybody else Because you're made in God's image.

  138. The only reason You're able to love is because God said, I'm.

  139. Going to make men and women in my own image.

  140. And if God was not a god of love, there

  141. would be no love in the universe, that would be

  142. no love between human beings. Now, the Bible says that

  143. God made you simply to love you.

  144. God made you to love you. He didn't need you.

  145. God is totally satisfied in himself. Father's not holy spirit,

  146. but he wanted you. That shows how valuable you are.

  147. Now let me show you some verses about how God

  148. planned you for his pleasure. He planned he created you

  149. just so we could love you. Revelation four, verse eleven.

  150. You God created everything, and it is for your pleasure.

  151. Circle that for your pleasure that they exist, and they

  152. were created. Everything was created because God gets enjoyment out

  153. of it.

  154. He wanted to love it.

  155. God loves every rock, every plant, every animal, every star,

  156. and every human being. So one verse four, the Lord

  157. takes pleasure in his people. Anybody here a parent, who

  158. has anybody here?

  159. Have kids?

  160. All right, those of you who are parents, do you

  161. get pleasure? How many of you get pleasure in your kids?

  162. You see most of the time? Yeah, yeah, Well, you

  163. know what God takes pleasure in you all of the time.

  164. Why because He made you, He created you, He's your

  165. heavenly father. Did you know that God gets pleasure in

  166. just watching you beu? Some people think that God is

  167. only smiling at them when they're doing something quote religious

  168. that if you know, if you're feeding the poor, you're

  169. helping the sick, you're confessing your sins, you're going to church,

  170. you're giving a tithe, you're being generous. That when you

  171. do these kind of spiritual things, reading your Bible and praying,

  172. then God smiles.

  173. But the rest of the.

  174. Time, God's kind of bored with you.

  175. Nothing could be further from the truth.

  176. God gets pleasure in watching you be you because He

  177. made you you, and when you do something that's so

  178. typical of you, he goes, that's my girl, that's my boy,

  179. That's what I made them to do. You know, when

  180. my children were little, I used to sneak into their

  181. rooms at night and sit by their bedside and watch

  182. them sleep. And I got so much pleasure out of

  183. just watching them breathe. You know, I would watch their

  184. little chest.

  185. Rise and lower and rise and lower and rise and lower,

  186. and I got so much pleasure just watching my kids breathe. Why,

  187. Because I am their creator, I'm their father.

  188. I made them. They wouldn't exist without me. Now, they

  189. didn't have to do anything special. They didn't have to

  190. be reading the Bible or memorizing scripture or witnessing to

  191. other two year olds. They just had to be themselves.

  192. And I got pleasure out of watching them sleep. Did

  193. you know that God gets pleasure out of watching you sleep?

  194. In fact, the way you act sometimes he's more pleased

  195. with that. But the fact is, if my kids had

  196. acted like the devil all day at night, they're angels.

  197. And God gives pleasure out of watching his.

  198. Children just be his children.

  199. Here's what the Bible says Ephesians, chapter one, verse four.

  200. Long before he God laid down the earth found ation.

  201. Other words, I mean is long before God created the universe.

  202. God had us in mind.

  203. Whoo. God had us in mind, and he settled on

  204. us as.

  205. The focus of his love circle the word focus. The

  206. focus of God's love is not animals. He loves animals,

  207. but that's not the focus of his love. The focus

  208. of God's love is not the environment. He loves the environment,

  209. but that's not his focus. His focus of his love

  210. is us. And the reason why is because He has

  211. given us the capacity to love him back. This is

  212. what makes you different from animals. Animals can't pray, animals

  213. can't talk to God. Animals can't worship because they're not

  214. made in God's image. God gave you the freedom of

  215. choice and the freedom to respond. You can learn to

  216. love and love him back. God knows everything about you.

  217. You know almost nothing about God. God loves you in

  218. spite of everything those about you. God wants you to

  219. learn to know him and love him back. And the

  220. Bible calls this worship. And it's the first purpose of

  221. your life. That God planned me for his pleasure and

  222. he wants me to.

  223. Learn to love him back.

  224. One day, a guy who was walking down the street

  225. in Jerusalem and he comes up to Jesus. He says, Lord,

  226. what's the most important commandment in the whole Bible? And

  227. Jesus says, I'll summarize the whole Bible and two sentences,

  228. this is it.

  229. Cliff notes on the Bible.

  230. Love God with all your heart, love Him with all

  231. your soul, all your mind, all your strength. Oh and

  232. by the way, second law, love your neighbor as yourself.

  233. Life is all about love. If you don't get that,

  234. you miss the first purpose of your life. And the

  235. first purpose is to love God with all your heart

  236. and soul and mind and strength, to get to know him.

  237. God wants you to know him and love him back.

  238. Here's what he says in the Book of Hoseiah in

  239. the Bible, chapter six, verse six. God says, I don't

  240. want your sacrifices. I want your loved talking to you.

  241. I don't want your offerings. I want you to know me.

  242. Now circle the word love and circle the word no.

  243. Because that is the first purpose of your life, to

  244. know God and to love God. The most important thing

  245. you can know in life is that God loves you,

  246. and the most important thing you can do in life

  247. is love him back.

  248. So, as I've.

  249. Said to you many times, you ought to get up

  250. in the morning and say God, I want to know

  251. you and love you more.

  252. I have done this.

  253. Every single morning of my life for decades. I don't

  254. get out of bed.

  255. In the morning. Before I do this.

  256. I sit on the edge of my bed before my

  257. feet touched the ground, and I just say this, Dear God,

  258. it's another day. And if I don't get anything else done. Today,

  259. I want to know you a little bit better, and

  260. I want to love you a little bit more, because

  261. that's the first purpose of life. I was planned for

  262. God's pleasure. And if at the end of the day

  263. that day everything went wrong, it was terrible. I sin,

  264. there were mistakes. There are all kinds of grief and

  265. problems and difficulties. If at the end of the day

  266. I know God a little bit better and love him

  267. a little bit more, I didn't waste that day. On

  268. the other hand, it doesn't matter how many things you accomplished,

  269. how many things you achieve, how famous you become, how

  270. much money you make. If at the end of each

  271. day you don't know God a little bit better and

  272. love him a little bit more, you just wasted that day.

  273. Because God did not create you and put you on

  274. earth just to mark things off your to do list.

  275. He put you here for the very first purpose, and

  276. there are five purposes of your life.

  277. To know Him and love Him. Write this down. The

  278. first purpose of my life is to know and love God. Bam.

  279. That's it. It's pretty simple. Love God with all your heart.

  280. You got to get to know him before you can

  281. love him. To know and love God. Now, the tragedy

  282. is a lot of people are going through life missing

  283. the number one purpose of life. They know everything else.

  284. They know sports scores, they know music, so they know

  285. who's on the cover of People magazine, they know who

  286. is the winner.

  287. Of the Voice.

  288. They know all kinds of things in pop culture. But

  289. they don't know God. And that's the most important thing

  290. in life. It's what you were put here to do,

  291. to know God. Fir Timothy, Chapter six the Bible says this,

  292. some people have missed the most important thing in life.

  293. They don't know God. They don't know God.

  294. Now, how do you know when you don't know God?

  295. How do you know when you're disconnected from God? How

  296. do you know when in that moment you're not knowing

  297. and loving God. God has given us a warning sign

  298. and that goes off like a bright yellow light in

  299. your life every time you get disconnected from God. And

  300. that warning sign is this.

  301. Worry. Are any of you familiar with this term worry? Yeah?

  302. Yeah, Well, anytime when you worry, you're acting like God

  303. doesn't exist. You're acting like if it's to be it's

  304. up to me. No, it's not up to you, it's

  305. up to God. And when you worry, you're acting like

  306. it's all your responsibility that you don't have a heavenly

  307. father who loves you. That there aren't seven thousand promises

  308. in the Bible, that God hasn't already agreed to take

  309. care of all your needs. You're acting like an orphan,

  310. like you don't have to have any father.

  311. God doesn't exist.

  312. Worry is practical atheism. It's practically it's acting like an

  313. atheist and worry. The Bible says in Matthew six point

  314. thirty two, people who don't know God are always worrying. Now,

  315. God planned me for his pleasure. So the first purpose

  316. of my life is to know and love God. Not

  317. only did God plan me for his pleasure. Number two,

  318. God formed me for his family. God formed me for

  319. his family. God wanted a family, and you were created

  320. to be a part of it. The whole reason the

  321. universe exists. You want to know why the universe exists.

  322. God wanted a family. He wanted children. Now, he didn't

  323. need us, but he wanted us. He wanted to show

  324. his love to something, so he created us as objects

  325. of his love. And he created the entire universe to

  326. create this galaxy to create this planet, so it's on

  327. an access Do you know that one degree this way

  328. we'd burn up. In one degree this way we'd freeze up.

  329. It's just the perfect angle that would sustain life at

  330. this point from the sun. Just so he could create

  331. the human race, just so he could create you, just

  332. so he could love you. That's how valuable you are

  333. to God. God thought you up before he thought up

  334. the universe. The Bible says this very clearly, that you

  335. the focus of his love. Ephesians, chapter one, verse five.

  336. God's unchanging plan, it never has changed, has always been

  337. to adopt us into his own family. Whoooa whoa by

  338. bringing this to himself through Jesus Christ, and this gave

  339. him God great pleasure. God wanted a family and wanted

  340. you to be a part of it. God never meant

  341. for you to go through life alone. Whether you marry

  342. or not is irrelevant. Whether you are your family stays

  343. together splits up, is irrelevant.

  344. To this point.

  345. God wanted you in his family, and the first thing

  346. he told Adam is it's not good for men.

  347. To be alone.

  348. You're made to be in a spiritual family that he

  349. created to take care of you. So you're not lonely

  350. in life. And by the way, I said this before,

  351. your spiritual family is going to outlast your physical family.

  352. No physical family lasts. People grow up, they move off,

  353. they get married, they start their own family. People divorce,

  354. people die, people separate. No physical family lasts forever. But

  355. your spiritual family is going to last forever and ever

  356. and ever. In fact, it's the only thing on planet

  357. Earth that is going to last forever and ever and ever,

  358. your spiritual family. First Peter Chapter one says this verse three,

  359. God has given us the privilege of being born again,

  360. so that we are now members of God's family, God's

  361. own family circle that word members.

  362. Now, I said this last week.

  363. Or a couple weeks ago, that when you were born physically,

  364. you automatically became a part of the human race.

  365. You didn't have a choice. You didn't have a choice.

  366. You automatically became a part of human race. But you

  367. didn't become a part of a spiritual family or a

  368. physical family until somebody chose to take you home. Being

  369. a part of God's family is He's not automatic. It's

  370. a choice. Now, listen to me very closely on this.

  371. Are you telling me that everybody is not a child

  372. of God. That's exactly what I'm telling you. You got

  373. to choose to be in God's family. You got to

  374. let him adopt you. Everybody is created by God. Everybody

  375. is loved by God. God has never made a person

  376. he didn't love. God has never made a person he

  377. did not want in his family. But he gives you

  378. the choice, and He's not going to force you in.

  379. A lot of people choose to opt out. They are

  380. not children of God because they choose to opt out.

  381. And God's not going to force you into an adoption.

  382. You got to want to be adopted into his family.

  383. Now, what is God's family?

  384. One Timothy chapter three says that family is the church.

  385. The family is the Church of the Living God, the

  386. support and foundation of the truth. Now, notice that the

  387. church is not an organization. The church is not an institution.

  388. The church is not a political entity. It's not a business,

  389. it's not a society, it's not an organization. God says,

  390. the church is a family. It's God's family. And we

  391. are children of God, which makes us brothers and sisters

  392. in the family of God. And God's purpose for your

  393. life is not just to know Him and love him,

  394. but to belong to his family. He doesn't want you

  395. just to believe. He wants you to belong, to be connected.

  396. A Christian without a church family is an orphan. Now

  397. it says that that family is a church, a support

  398. and foundation of the true circle.

  399. Support and foundation.

  400. What happens when a building has no support and foundation,

  401. It collapses? And we see that all around us. We

  402. see collapsed marriages, and if you grew up in a

  403. family where the marriage collapsed, we see it and collapsed businesses.

  404. We see it in collapsed dreams. We see it in

  405. collapsed economies. We see it in the collapsed weather, we

  406. see it in collapsed health. When you don't have the

  407. support and foundation of God's family, you're not gonna make

  408. it through the tough times of life. You need support

  409. and you need a foundation, and the Bible says that

  410. is the church, God's family. You cannot fulfill God's purposes

  411. for your life by yourself. Sorry, you can't. You can try,

  412. but you will fail. You cannot fulfill the purpose God

  413. made you for by yourself. We're better together. We're made

  414. to be in community, We're made to be in harmony.

  415. We're made to be in family. We're made to be

  416. in relationship. That's why you need the spiritual support of

  417. a spiritual family. Now, the Bible says in one Peter

  418. two seventeen, love your spiritual family.

  419. What a great message from Pastor Rick today. There's something

  420. I always take away from his message. Here's Rick to

  421. tell you how you can help support this ministry.

  422. Jesus told his disciples that they should live their lives

  423. according to five specific purposes. He said, you've got to

  424. love God with all your heart. That's worship, and love

  425. your neighbors yourself. That's ministry. That's called the Great Commandment.

  426. And then Jesus said, go make disciples. That's evangelism, Baptize

  427. them into the Family of God. That's fellowship, a sign

  428. of fellowship. And then he said, teach them obey everything

  429. I've taught you. That's discipleship. And we call that the

  430. Great Commission. We believe it daily hope that a great

  431. commitment to the Great Commandment and the Great Commission will

  432. produce a great Christian, a great church, a great company,

  433. a great community. You know, I started daily hope so

  434. I could spread the good news about Jesus, not just

  435. across America, but all around the world, and we want

  436. people to know that God's word is filled with hope

  437. and truth and the power that we need to follow

  438. him every day is available to every single one. You

  439. know as well as I do, that the Word of

  440. God changes lives. It's a live it's active, and it

  441. breathes new life and new love into all of our lives.

  442. So wherever you listen to this, whether you listen on

  443. the website, whether you listen on a radio station, or

  444. whether you listen to a podcast, You're a part of

  445. the Daily Hope family and I need your help. We

  446. could not do this without your support. We're one hundred

  447. percent listener funded. Would you continue to pray for this

  448. broadcast and would you continue to support us? And let

  449. write to me, let me hear from you. I absolutely

  450. love reading the stories that are sent to me. So

  451. write me, pray for me, and support this ministry and

  452. God will bless it, and God will bless you and

  453. will get to heaven. And well, thank God for all

  454. the people going to be in heaven because you cared.
