  1. Now you've heard of the weapons of mass destruction, but

  2. I want to talk to you about what the Bible

  3. teaches about the weapons of self destruction. There are things

  4. that you do to yourself all the time that dammage you,

  5. that hurts you, that cause you to self destruct, that

  6. caused you enormous stress, enormous pain, enormous unhappiness, and.

  7. Unneeded pressure in your life.

  8. And then I'm going to show you, from God's word

  9. in Romans chapter eight, how the Bible tells us that

  10. the spirit of God living within you can give you

  11. the antidote to.

  12. Every one of these weapons.

  13. Now, before we even get into the text, I want

  14. you to write these seven things down.

  15. It's not on your outline, so you're.

  16. Just gonna have to write it somewhere, scribble it over

  17. on the side. These are the seven weapons of self destruction.

  18. You can talk to any psychologist and they'll tell you

  19. that these are the seven things that mess up people's

  20. lives more than in anything else. And we're going to

  21. look at the cure for these weapons of self destruction.

  22. The first weapon of self destruction is shame.

  23. Shame.

  24. You cannot be happy and feel ashamed at the same time.

  25. When you feel ashamed, when you feel guilty, when you

  26. feel regrets, that just robs all your happiness. God doesn't

  27. want you to walk around feeling guilty. God doesn't want

  28. you walk around feeling shamed. God doesn't want you walk

  29. around with regrets. In fact, that's why I send Jesus

  30. on the cross to die for all of your sins.

  31. But shame is the first number one destroyer of happiness.

  32. The second weapon of self destruction is uncontrolled thoughts. If

  33. you don't learn how to control your thoughts, your thoughts

  34. will ruin your life because you say to stuff to

  35. yourself that causes unhappiness, causes grief, causes pressure.

  36. You must learn how to control your thoughts.

  37. The third weapon of self destruction is compulsions. Compulsions are

  38. those inner drives, inner desires. You can call them less

  39. you can call them habits, you can call them impulses.

  40. But there are those things in your life you feel like,

  41. I felt like I just had to do it, even

  42. though you knew it was wrong. I just had to

  43. do it. And those compulsions. You got to learn how

  44. to deal with those and how to fight that weapon

  45. of self destruction. Because if you do things by your compulsions,

  46. you'll mess up your life. The fourth weapon of self

  47. destruction is fear, and fear is an enormous destroyer of happiness,

  48. of potential, of God's purpose for your life. It will

  49. limit your life. You got to learn how to master

  50. your fears. The fifth weapon of self destruction is hopelessness.

  51. Hopelessness keeps you from keeping on. When you start to

  52. feel hopeless about anything, you get discouraged and want to

  53. give up. If you feel hopeless about your marriage, if

  54. you feel hopeless about ever getting married, if you feel

  55. hopeless about your finances, or you feel hopeless about your health.

  56. Hopelessness is a self destructive weapon that you use on you,

  57. and when you turn it inward, it robs you of

  58. God's plan for your life.

  59. Number six.

  60. Bitterness is a huge weapon of self destruction because life

  61. is unfair and we don't all get the same thing,

  62. and life is broken and we're stuck, and some people

  63. get better than you, and you get jealous and you

  64. get envious, and some people hurt you.

  65. You can either.

  66. Get better or bitter, and bitterness is a cancer that

  67. will eat you alive and will It's a poison that

  68. will eat you on the inside. You never hurt other

  69. people with your bitterness like you hurt yourself. You always

  70. hurt you the most. It is a self destructive emotion.

  71. There is no value to bitterness in your life. There's

  72. no value to holding onto a grudge. All it does

  73. is make you miserable. And the seventh weapon of self

  74. destruction is insecurity. You gotta deal with this one because

  75. if you don't learn how to deal with insecurity in

  76. your life, it's going to cause you to do foolish things.

  77. When you're insecure and you're trying to show everybody else

  78. that you're very confident, you'll say stupid things, you'll do

  79. stupid things. You'll pose And the only people impressed by

  80. posers are other posers. Okay, everybody sees through it. The

  81. only people are impressed by fakes are other fakes. So

  82. you know, when you're insecure, you can't hide it.

  83. You have to deal with it. Now.

  84. The classic passage on dealing with these weapons of self destruction.

  85. Is Roman seven and Romans eight.

  86. Now, at the end of Rome seven, Paul says this,

  87. look up here on the screen.

  88. He's outlined the battle going on.

  89. Inside himself, and he says, what a miserable person I

  90. am because I'm miserable. You know, as I said, all

  91. those things I want to do that I know are good,

  92. I end up not doing, and all those things that

  93. I don't want to do, I end up doing. And

  94. I'm really messing up my life. What a miserable person

  95. I am. I've tried everything and nothing helps. He says,

  96. who will free me from this life dominated by sin?

  97. Now he doesn't say what will free me? Because the

  98. answer to you, the problem inside you, the mess ups

  99. in your life that you'd like to change. The answer

  100. is not a pill. It's not a program, it's not

  101. a book, it's not a tape, it's not a seminar,

  102. it's not hypnosis. The answer is a person. It is

  103. Jesus Christ and his spirit inside you. And Romans eight

  104. is the answer to Romans seven, that the spirit of

  105. God inside you gives you the antidote to all seven

  106. of these negative emotions. Now, what I want us to

  107. look at this weekend is how can I be free

  108. from me?

  109. How can I be set free from me?

  110. And the way we're gonna look at this is the

  111. truths of Romans eight. I have put them in a

  112. practical way. Of listing seven mental habits that you need

  113. to do that will help you apply the truth of

  114. Romans chapter eight.

  115. And so we're.

  116. Gonna look at these seven mental habits that explain the

  117. great truths of Romans eight. Romans eight is the greatest

  118. chapter in the Bible. In my opinion, it's the greatest

  119. chapter they want to to study of Bible scholars and said,

  120. if you could only have one chapter of the Bible

  121. and you're on a desert island, which one would you take?

  122. And about ninety percent of them said I'd take Romans eight.

  123. So this is a very strong passage. You need to

  124. take a lot of notes today.

  125. Number one.

  126. The first step in being set free from me is this,

  127. I must remind myself.

  128. Daily what Jesus did for me. That's the starting point.

  129. I got to remind myself every day of what Jesus

  130. did for me. What is salvation? What are the benefits

  131. of it? You see, we have a lot of people

  132. who saved. You don't act like it. They run around

  133. all the time filled with shame and uncontrolled thoughts and

  134. compulsions and fear and bitterness and insecurity. And they're believers,

  135. but they're not set free from me. And the first

  136. step is you've got to remind yourself what Jesus actually

  137. did for you. And this is how the Holy Spirit

  138. sets me free from shame. Let's look at these verses

  139. Romans eight one to four. First, he says, so now

  140. there is no condemnation for those who belong to Jesus Christ.

  141. And let me stop there before we go any further.

  142. No condemnation means God doesn't judge you for all the

  143. things you've done wrong. You've trusted Christ because Jesus took

  144. all that judgment on the cross. He doesn't have to

  145. judge you. Because Jesus was judged, he doesn't have to

  146. condemn you. Because Jesus took your condemnation. He took your wrap,

  147. he paid your penalty, He did your time for you. Now,

  148. the Bible says that if I'm a believer, I belong

  149. to Christ. Look at that verse. There is no condemnation

  150. for those who belong to Christ Jesus. Circle the phrase

  151. belong to Christ Jesus. This old passage is talking about

  152. people who've given their life to Jesus. This doesn't apply

  153. to you if you haven't made that decision yet, But

  154. if you've received Christ in your life. The Bible says

  155. you're under no condemnation. I means God doesn't get mad

  156. at you when you sin. Did you hear that God

  157. does not get mad at you when you sin if

  158. you belong to Jesus Christ, because he's already taken the payment. Now,

  159. notice it doesn't say that after I become a Christian, I.

  160. Won't sin, You're still going to sin.

  161. It doesn't say I'm not gonna make mistakes. You're still

  162. gonna make mistakes. It doesn't say I'm not gonna fail

  163. and look stupid, You're gonna fail and look stupid. It

  164. just says you're under no condemnation. In other words, you

  165. don't have to walk around with shame. You don't have

  166. to walk around with guilt, because when Jesus Christ died

  167. on the cross, he not only paid for all of

  168. the sins you committed last week, last year, and your

  169. entire life he committed. He's already paid for the sins

  170. that you're gonna commit tomorrow, next week, and the rest

  171. of your life. They're already paid for. That's good news.

  172. That is good news. No condemnation. That means there is

  173. no reason for a Christian to walk around in shame.

  174. Because I stop and I remind myself Jesus paid.

  175. For all of my sins.

  176. He already knew before I was born, every sin I

  177. was gonna do, and He paid for it. Now, the

  178. next part of that verse says, for the power of

  179. the life giving spirit, that's the Holy Spirit. God's Spirit

  180. has freed you through Christ Jesus from the power of

  181. sin that leads to death.

  182. And what does that verse mean?

  183. The second thing I remember is that because I'm a

  184. believer and I have Jesus, I have a new power

  185. in my life, greater than willpower. You see, before you

  186. became a Christian, the only thing you had to use

  187. against your bad habits was sheer willpower.

  188. And how long does that work? Now?

  189. Very long, he says. Now there's a new power in you. Unfortunately,

  190. a lot of Christians are still simply relying on willpower

  191. to change. They've never figured out how to connect into

  192. spiritual power, into the power of the Holy Spirit, into

  193. the power of Jesus inside you. He says, there's a

  194. new power in you. There's a new sheriff in town.

  195. And when you want to change things in your life,

  196. it's not just if it's to be.

  197. It's up to me.

  198. It's not just my own willpower. It is God's power

  199. in me. I have been given the power greater than willpower.

  200. We're gonna look at this more in the next versus,

  201. then the next thing.

  202. It says the law of Moses could not.

  203. Save us because of our sinful nature. Now laws, keeping

  204. God's laws cannot save you.

  205. Guy says, well, I know I'm going to heaven. You say,

  206. how do you know? It's because I keep the Ten Commandments.

  207. I say, name them.

  208. You don't not only not keep the ten commandments, you

  209. couldn't even name all of them. If I ask you

  210. to stand up right now, you couldn't even How can

  211. you keep them if you don't even know them all?

  212. By the way, keeping laws never works. Why, it says,

  213. because of our sinful nature. Laws simply work on outside behavior.

  214. They don't work on inside change. They don't change you

  215. on the inside. For instance, if I were to bring

  216. a pig out here, a big sow that had been

  217. rolling around in the mud and the dirt and eating garbage,

  218. and it stinks to high heaven, and say what is this,

  219. you'd say, it's a pig. Now I take that pig backstage,

  220. and I run it through a couple of car washes,

  221. and then I put it in a bathtub, and I have.

  222. Bath salts and perfumed.

  223. Soap SuDS, and I get it all cleaned up, and

  224. I brushed the you know, their teeth, the pig's teeth.

  225. And then I sprinkle some foo foo juice on it.

  226. You know some corral number five, you know that would

  227. be appropriate for a pig, okay, And I rub it

  228. down with oil of olet so its skin is just silky,

  229. silky soft. And then I tie a ribbon around its neck,

  230. and I put a bonnet on it, and and I

  231. put some eyeshadow and fake eyelashes on this pig.

  232. And I put a dress on it.

  233. And then I put some lipstick on this pig. And

  234. I bring this pig out, and I say, now, what

  235. is it still a pig?

  236. Okay?

  237. You may have spiffed up the outside, but the nature

  238. has remained unchanged. And this is what happens with self

  239. help programs, is that we spiff up the outside and

  240. we my sheer will powers say, I'm gonna take a bath,

  241. I'm gonna get on some new clothes, I'm gonna change

  242. my behavior and all the outside looks different, but inside

  243. it's still the same nature. If you're gonna have radical change,

  244. transforming change in your life, it's got to change your nature,

  245. and only God can do that. No self help program

  246. can change your heart, which, by the way, is why

  247. I'm not a politician. I have zero faith in politics

  248. or laws to change human behavior. Why because it's just

  249. fixing the outside. You can pass a law that says

  250. nobody will be a bigot or a racist. Is that

  251. gonna change anybody's heart. No, Only Jesus can change that heart.

  252. And I have seen people come to Christ and they

  253. change from a racist into a compassionate person, and from

  254. a bigot into a loving person. Only Jesus can change that.

  255. If I thought you could change human behavior by laws,

  256. I'd be a politician, But there's no track record that

  257. it actually changes people. Only God can change the inside, which,

  258. by the way, is why we don't spend so much

  259. time promoting all political laws. You know, there are some

  260. Christians who think they're going to make the world a

  261. better place just by creating a law.

  262. Will people just break it?

  263. I mean, they want a law against this sin, and

  264. a law against this sin and the law against this sin,

  265. and the law against this sin, and the law against

  266. this sin. And they think that's going to change people. No,

  267. people just going to break the law you do. God

  268. has given all kinds of laws in his word, and

  269. you don't obey those, and you break them all the time.

  270. See.

  271. One of the things we know here at Saddleback is

  272. you don't expect somebody to act like a believer until

  273. he is one, because he doesn't have the power to change.

  274. He doesn't have the ability to change. So passing a

  275. law that says everybody is going to be moral or

  276. everybody's going to do this, that doesn't change that's fit,

  277. that's cleaning.

  278. Up the pig.

  279. It doesn't change our nature. God put into effect. Notice here,

  280. so God knew that laws couldn't save us. But God

  281. put into effect a different plan to save us. He said,

  282. his own son in a human body like ours, except

  283. that ours are sinful. And God destroyed sins control over

  284. us by giving his son as a sacrifice for our sins.

  285. In other words, he gave us the power to make

  286. those changes, to forgive us and to change us. And

  287. then it said he did this. Jesus died on the cross,

  288. so that the requirement of the law would be fully

  289. accomplished for us.

  290. Circle the phrase for us. What is he saying there?

  291. That Jesus not only paid for all your sins, he

  292. did all the right things for you, those of us

  293. who no longer follow our sinful.

  294. Nature but instead follow the spirit. Now, if you.

  295. Really are serious about changing your life for the better,

  296. you've got to start where God tells you to start.

  297. And God says you don't start with your behavior, your actions,

  298. and you don't start with your feelings, your emotions. You

  299. start with your mind. The battle for you to be

  300. set free from Me starts in changing your mind. Be renewed,

  301. be transformed by the renewing of your mind. The Bible

  302. teaches very clearly that the way we act is determined

  303. by the way we feel, and the way we feel

  304. is determined by the way we think. For instance, if

  305. I'm acting depressed, it's because I feel depressed, and if

  306. I'm feeling depressed, it's because I'm thinking depressed thoughts.

  307. And if I want to get over.

  308. My depression, I don't force myself to change my behavior.

  309. That doesn't work, And I don't force myself to change

  310. my feelings you can't change a feeling. You cannot force

  311. a feeling. A guy says, you know, I don't love

  312. my wife anymore. So I said, well, okay, what are

  313. you going to do about it? Well, I'm just going

  314. to force myself to feel that I love her. How

  315. will that work? It doesn't work. You can't force a feeling.

  316. It's like telling the crying kid, now I command you

  317. to be happy.

  318. I try it, dad of you crying.

  319. You cannot force a feeling. In fact, when you try

  320. to force a feeling, everybody knows you're faking it.

  321. You can't force a feeling. You can't fight that feeling anymore.

  322. That that you're really old. Okay, you are really really old. Okay.

  323. Now, what you do is you change the way you think.

  324. And if you change the way you think, that's going

  325. to change the way you feel, and it will change

  326. the way you act. So if you say, you know,

  327. I don't have any feelings for my wife anymore, you

  328. can act your way into a feeling, and you can

  329. think your way into feeling, but you can't feel your

  330. way into feeling. If you start acting loving towards your

  331. wife and you start thinking loving thoughts toward you, right,

  332. I'm gonna tell you what. The feelings will come back.

  333. They will return. You act your way into a feeling,

  334. and you think your way into a feeling, but you

  335. don't feel your way into feeling. Now, the good thing

  336. about this is that now that you're a Christian, you

  337. have the Holy Spirit inside of you, and so you

  338. can ask him to help you put good thoughts in

  339. your mind. So now you're not just on your own.

  340. You're not just out here trying to think up stuff

  341. by yourself.

  342. And what would be a good thing for me to

  343. think about?

  344. You can say, Holy Spirit, put good thoughts in my mind.

  345. That's the second thing we learned from Romans eight. Write

  346. this down number two. The second mental habit to defeat

  347. the weapons of self destruction is I ask the Holy

  348. Spirit to give me better thoughts. I ask the Holy

  349. Spirit to give me better thoughts. And if you ask

  350. him to give you better thoughts, do you think he will?

  351. Of course he will. Of course he's going to give

  352. you better thoughts. That's a prayer he's going to answer.

  353. I ask the Holy Spirit to give me better thoughts.

  354. This is the second key to permanent change in your life. Now,

  355. this is what it says in the next two verses,

  356. Verses five and.

  357. Six of Romans eight.

  358. Those who live according to the sinful nature have their

  359. mindset on what the nature that nature desires, But those

  360. who live in a accordance with the Spirit have their

  361. mindset on what the Spirit desires. Now, there's two kinds

  362. of mindsets circle the mindsets. There's the mindset of your

  363. old nature, and there's the mindset of the Holy Spirit.

  364. There's the mindset of the way I normally think about

  365. my life, and there's the mindset of how the Spirit

  366. sees my life. Which one's gonna be true the one

  367. that the Spirit says. So I have to choose between

  368. these mindsets. Am I gonna set my mind on the

  369. way I normally think about my life? Or am I

  370. gonna set my mind on the way God thinks about

  371. my life. Now, there's a big difference in choosing these mindsets,

  372. because if you choose one, you're gonna get one response,

  373. and if you choose the other, you're gonna get another.

  374. And the next part of the verse tells us what

  375. that is the mind of sinful man is what that means,

  376. it's self destructive thoughts that you come up with yourself

  377. are going to tend to be self destructive.

  378. The mind is sinful, man is death.

  379. But the mind controlled by the spirit is what life

  380. and peace. Okay I don't normally do this, but how

  381. many of you would like to have life and.

  382. Peace this summer?

  383. Yeah, me too, I would like to have life and

  384. peace of summer. And it's all about the mindset you choose.

  385. The economy may not change, it probably won't. Your problems

  386. probably won't change those ones that are persistent, but your

  387. mindset can change. And that's the difference between a life

  388. of self destruction or a life of life and peace. Now,

  389. this is the Holy Spirit's answer to uncontrolled thoughts. What

  390. I do is I ask the Holy Spirit to give

  391. me better thoughts. And this is the principle of replacement.

  392. I want you to write this word down, replacement. The

  393. principle of replacement is anytime you want to change something

  394. in your life and you're serious about changing it, you

  395. don't resist it.

  396. You replace it.

  397. When you got something negative in your life, you don't

  398. resist it, you replace it. You say, I want to

  399. stop smoking, you don't smoking. I want to stop smoking.

  400. I want to stop smoking. I want to stop smoking.

  401. It's like the frog and towed together, that story we

  402. read last week. I don't want to eat a cookie

  403. and I just ate one. I don't want to eat

  404. a cookie and I just ate one. I don't want

  405. to eat a cooking. No, because the whole time you're

  406. focusing on what you don't want and whatever if you

  407. focus on, gets your attention. Whatever gets your attention gets you.

  408. That's why if you want to break any bad habit

  409. in your life, the key is not to resist it,

  410. but to refocus. Whatever you resist persists because you keep

  411. focusing on it. Now, It's like if I'm flipping TV

  412. channels and all of a sudden there's something on TV

  413. that I don't really want to watch or I shouldn't watch.

  414. I don't sit there and go I don't want to

  415. watch it. I don't want to watch it. I don't

  416. want to watch I just flip the channel, I replace it,

  417. and the moment I replace it.

  418. It's gone. It has no grip on me anymore. So.

  419. I mean, if you're standing in an airport bookstore and

  420. they've got all these girly magazines, and you're standing in

  421. front of you saying, I don't want to look at them.

  422. I don't want to look at them up. What do

  423. you do? Well, you don't stand there.

  424. You walk away, Okay, you slam the door if you want,

  425. don't want to get stung by the bees. You just

  426. get away from them, and you replace it with something else.

  427. Now, let's say.

  428. I had a big, fat, juicy donut sitting right here.

  429. Okay, I mean, and it's hot.

  430. And the glaze is just kind of dripping off the side.

  431. Now, if it's sitting here, I don't go.

  432. I don't want that donut, I really really, I'm just

  433. smelling it. Oh baby, old baby, that yeasty smell.

  434. Oh wow.

  435. Now what do I do? I just look over it

  436. down to you guys. And the moment I say you guys,

  437. I've lost, it's lost its grip on me because my

  438. tension has changed.

  439. Now.

  440. As long as I resist the donut, it hadn't work.

  441. But the moment I refocus on something else, I don't

  442. even think about it anymore.

  443. Does that make sense? Okay?

  444. So I ask the Holy Spirit to give me better

  445. thoughts to replace the negative.

  446. Ones in my mind.

  447. Now, you choose what you dwell on. Satan gives you ideas.

  448. Those are called temptations Holy Spirit gives you ideas. Those

  449. are called inspiration. You get ideas, But the truth is

  450. you choose what you focus on. But now now that

  451. you're a believer, you have a helper and you can say,

  452. Holy Spirit, I invite you to give me your ideas.

  453. And a lot of times the Holy Spirit, the God's

  454. Spirit will say to me, Rick, why don't you think

  455. about this instead?

  456. Good idea? And I just change my thoughts.

  457. Now, I would encourage you to invite the Holy Spirit

  458. to have free access to your mind. You say, God,

  459. you have put your spirit inside of me. I give

  460. you free access to my mind twenty four hours a day.

  461. I invite you to suggest good thoughts. Why because they'll

  462. always be the truth, They'll always be right, they'll always

  463. be helpful, they'll always be pure.

  464. Those are the things we are to think on. So

  465. you invite the Holy Spirit to put thoughts in your mind? Why?

  466. Because those who live according to sinful nature have their

  467. mindset on one thing, but those who live according to

  468. the Spirit have their mindset on another. And the mindset

  469. that I normally have leads to self destruction, and the

  470. mindset that God's Spirit gives me leads to peace and

  471. I want peace in my life. So, and that's why

  472. I said, you know earlier, we don't expect unbelievers to

  473. a like believers until they are. They don't have the power.

  474. Look at the next verse. The sinful mind is hostile

  475. to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor

  476. can it do so.

  477. It can't even do it.

  478. Those controlled by sinful nature cannot please God. So why

  479. do you work on passing law when they don't have

  480. the ability to change it? To change, only God can

  481. change it. Change comes from the inside out. Third principle,

  482. Third mental habit You're going to need to develop to

  483. apply the truths of Roman's aid in your life, and

  484. that is this. I realize I have a new ability

  485. to say no. I need to remind myself. I need

  486. to remember on a daily basis. I need to realize

  487. that now that I'm a believer, I have a new

  488. ability to say no to the things that are self

  489. destructive in my life. Now this is very important because

  490. before you became a believer, all you had was will power.

  491. Lost most of those bad habits because lost to most

  492. of them because you don't willpower wears out. It's not enough.

  493. But now with the spirit in your life. You have

  494. a new ability to say no, a new power, and.

  495. You need to learn how to tap into that power.

  496. I don't know about you, but I could admit pretty

  497. honestly that before I had the Holy Spirit in my life,

  498. there were some things I just couldn't say no to.

  499. I didn't have the ability to say no to them.

  500. And you can call them compulsions, you can call them habits,

  501. you can call them urges, you can call them lusts,

  502. you can call them impulses, you can call them your

  503. old nature.

  504. But the truth is, there were.

  505. Some things in my life I just couldn't say no to.

  506. I had no ability to say no because I didn't have.

  507. All I had was willpower.

  508. Now now I have God's power, and he gives me

  509. the ability to say no.

  510. Look at this verse up here on the screen.

  511. Galatians five sixteen says this, let the Spirit direct your lives,

  512. and you will not satisfy the desires of the old

  513. human nature. Now, if I let the Spirit live through me,

  514. does it say I won't have those desires?

  515. Is that what it said? No, it says I won't what.

  516. I won't satisfy those desires? I won't satisfy those desires.

  517. In other words, do I still have the same desires

  518. I had before as a Christian?

  519. Yes? Do I still have the same temptations? Yes? Do

  520. I still have the same urges and compulsions? Yes? Do

  521. I fulfill them?

  522. No?

  523. Why?

  524. Because I have a new power inside of me, and

  525. it's not just will power anymore. Now I've heard people say,

  526. but why should I limit any desire in my life

  527. that seems natural? Why should I rein it in if

  528. it seems if it's a natural desire, Friends, not everything

  529. natural is good for you. I mean, I might naturally

  530. want to punch you in the nose. That doesn't mean

  531. I should do it. I have a lot of natural

  532. desires that I need to not fulfill. For instance, sometimes

  533. I have a natural desire to cuss people out on

  534. the freeway.

  535. Doesn't mean I should just do it.

  536. No, just because it's natural doesn't mean it's good. Arsenic

  537. is natural, but you drink it and it'll kill you.

  538. A lot of.

  539. Natural things are poison So just because it says natural

  540. doesn't mean it's good. There are things in my old

  541. nature that are very natural for me to do, but

  542. they're self destructive. I mean, people say, well, if I

  543. feel this way, why shouldn't I give into it? Because

  544. that's called maturity. Maturity is when you do the right thing,

  545. not what you feel like doing, because what you feel

  546. like doing isn't always the best for you, the best

  547. for somebody else, God's will or whatever. If everybody just

  548. did what they naturally feel like doing, nobody would go

  549. to work tomorrow morning. Nobody would go to work. If

  550. everybody did what they naturally feel like doing, you know,

  551. you know, every girl would be pregnant long before she

  552. got married. You got to realize that I have a

  553. new ability to say no. Now, this is the good

  554. news of Romans chapter eight. Look at the next verse,

  555. verse nine. But he says, you are not controlled by

  556. your sinful nature. You are now controlled by the spirit

  557. if you have the spirit of God living in you.

  558. Anybody who does not have the Spirit of God living

  559. in them does not belong to Christ.

  560. Now let me stop here and explain this.

  561. Some people mistakenly think that you get God kind of

  562. piece meal, that Jesus comes into your life at one

  563. point in your life, and then maybe a little bit later,

  564. the Holy Spirit comes into your life, and then maybe

  565. a little bit later, you get the Father into your life. No,

  566. God is a trinity three and one. When you got Jesus,

  567. you got all of God. God doesn't come into your

  568. life piece meal. When Jesus comes into your life, the

  569. Spirit comes into your life. When Jesus comes into your life,

  570. the Father comes into your life. When the Father comes

  571. into your life, the Spirit in Jesus come into your life.

  572. You can't separate them. You can't divide them up like

  573. a piece of pie. So the moment you gave your

  574. life to Christ, Jesus, Christ put his self in your

  575. life in his spirit, the spirit of God, the spirit

  576. of the Father, the spirit of Jesus.

  577. It is the Holy Spirit. So you don't get God

  578. a little bit at a time. Does that make sense?

  579. Okay, God, the Holy Spirit doesn't come in in the

  580. later point. He comes in and you get all of

  581. God when you give your life to Christ. Now the

  582. question is does he have all of you and the

  583. rest of your life. You're going to be given more

  584. and more of your life to him, and then the

  585. more you give, the more power you have. But he says,

  586. because I have this, I now have a new ability

  587. to say no. Look at the next verse. So, dear brothers,

  588. you have no obligation anymore to your old sinful nature

  589. to do what.

  590. It begs you to do.

  591. This is how God sets me free from my compulsions. Before,

  592. when I would have felt compulsed to do something, compelled

  593. to do something, I didn't have anything except willpower to

  594. stop myself. Now I've got a new power inside me,

  595. and I don't have any obligation anymore to listen to

  596. my old nature. Now I've heard people tell me, oh,

  597. I can't tell me. People who've had an affair, committed adultery,

  598. who told me I couldn't stop myself. I couldn't help myself.

  599. I just had to do it. I just felt compelled

  600. to do it. Well, now you have a new help

  601. to stop you. And when somebody says I'm a Christian,

  602. but I couldn't stop myself, they're lying. They're lying because

  603. they simply didn't call on the power that was there

  604. available to them, and they didn't rely on the Holy

  605. Spirit in that moment of temptation.

  606. Compulsions.

  607. You know you can ruin an entire life with one

  608. second of compulsion. Just go ask A bunch of the

  609. politicians had scandals this last year, spent decades building a reputation,

  610. and in a moment of compulsion, lost it all.

  611. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

  612. But I have a new power, a new ability to

  613. say no. Number four, the fourth mental habit I need

  614. to develop if I want to change my life is

  615. I need to turn my thoughts to God whenever I'm afraid.

  616. That's the fourth antidote to these weapons of self destruction.

  617. I remind myself every day what Jesus did for me.

  618. I ask the Holy Spirit to give me better thoughts.

  619. I realize I now have a new ability to say no,

  620. and then I turn my thoughts to God whenever I'm afraid,

  621. whenever I'm afraid. And this is how God Spirit sets

  622. me free from me with the attitude of fear Romans eight.

  623. Look at the next verses, verses fourteen to sixteen. For

  624. the spirit God gives you does not make you slaves

  625. and cause you to be afraid. Instead, the spirit makes

  626. you God's children, and by the Spirit's power we cry

  627. out to God, Father, my father. This is actually the

  628. Aramaic word aba. Aba is not the group. It means daddy, papa.

  629. It's dad dad. It's the most basic intimate form of father. Daddy, Daddy,

  630. my daddy. We cry out to God, Daddy, my daddy, Papa,

  631. my papa, ah Ba, my abba. God's spirit joins himself

  632. to our spirits to declare that we are God's children. Now,

  633. when I was a kid, I wasn't very fearful at all.

  634. I really had almost no fears as a child and

  635. was pretty reckless and had a lot of fun growing up.

  636. But sometimes as a young child at night, if I

  637. heard something that was kind of scary and I was afraid,

  638. I would always cry out to my father. I say Daddy, Daddy,

  639. and he could hear me from my room in our house,

  640. and my Dad would come and see me. Now, when

  641. I was afraid, I never called out for my mom.

  642. And the reason why is I knew my dad was stronger. Now,

  643. my dad wasn't a big guy, but he was very

  644. strong because he was a hard worker, and I knew

  645. he could take on anybody. And so I'd say Daddy.

  646. Whenever I was afraid, I would cry out to Daddy.

  647. This is exactly what God tells you to do when

  648. you're afraid. Stop focusing on your fear, Start focusing on

  649. your father.

  650. That's the antidote.

  651. Stop focusing on your fear, start focusing on your father. Now,

  652. he says, the antidote to fear is two things. First,

  653. he says, the spirit that God has given you doesn't

  654. make you slaves, make you afraid, but he makes you

  655. God's children. Whenever you are afraid, the first thing you

  656. need to do is remember this whose family you're a

  657. part of. I'm a son of God. I'm a daughter

  658. of God. I'm a child of God. I'm in the family.

  659. And families take care of each other, and there's family protection. Now,

  660. let's say you grew up in Chicago or in New

  661. York City and your family was a part of the

  662. family okay, the mafia family.

  663. Okay.

  664. And you're walking down the street as a kid, okay,

  665. and somebody starts to assault you and you stop me.

  666. He says, oh wait, just a minute. Do you know

  667. who I am? Do you know who I am?

  668. My father is Guido, and Guido works for Bruno, and

  669. Bruno is the Copo de Capo de Capo de capo.

  670. He will make you an offer you can't refuse. Are

  671. you sure you want to touch me because I'm in

  672. the family, And hey says, well, on second thought, you

  673. can have your money back because the family protects you. Now,

  674. when you start to be afraid, God says the first thing,

  675. he says, Wait a minute.

  676. Do you know who my father is.

  677. My father is the creator of the universe. My father

  678. is God. I'm a child of God. I'm in the

  679. family God takes care of his kids. And then I

  680. cry out to father, Father, would you take care of

  681. this fear for me? Will you handle this one for me?

  682. And my heavenly Father says, of course, I'll handle it

  683. for me.

  684. Go back to sleep. You don't have to worry about it.

  685. I'll take care of you.

  686. When you were afraid, you remember whose family you're in.

  687. You're a child of God. You're not a slave. You're

  688. a child of God, and He's going to take care

  689. of you. And second you call out to your father. Now,

  690. what are you most afraid of? What are you most

  691. afraid of?

  692. These days?

  693. You know the number one fear people have. I know

  694. all the studies. People say it's the fear of speaking

  695. in front of others, It's a fear of heights, or

  696. you know, the fear of new social situations. Actually, what

  697. I've found is a pastor talking to people for thirty years.

  698. The number one fear people have is the fear of

  699. being out of control. And when you feel your life

  700. is out of control, it creates enormous fear in your life.

  701. And the longer you feel it's out of control, you

  702. start thinking I'm out of control. And then you start thinking,

  703. maybe I'm losing my mind, and you start feary. Maybe

  704. I'm going crazy, maybe I'm going insane. You've all felt

  705. this at different times in your life, so don't act

  706. like so self righteous everybody. I think I'm losing my mind.

  707. I think I'm going crazy. I'm afraid I'm going nuts. Now,

  708. let me just put you at ease. You're not going

  709. crazy because crazy people don't fear that. Crazy people are

  710. very happy to be crazy and don't care. The very

  711. fact that you are afraid you're going crazy means you're rational,

  712. so you're not crazy. You're not going crazy. The fear

  713. that you're going crazy shows that you're very very rational.

  714. Crazy people aren't afraid of being crazy. So I want

  715. everybody to say this, I'm broken, but I'm not crazy. Okay,

  716. let's say it a loud together. I'm broken, but I'm

  717. not crazy. Let's say it again. I'm broken, but I'm

  718. not crazy. That's some of you are afraid to say it.

  719. So let's say it again. Okay, ready, I'm broken, but

  720. I'm not crazy. Everybody's broken. I'm broken, you're broken. The

  721. person sitting next to you is broken.

  722. We're all.

  723. Nothing is perfect in this world, but you're not crazy.

  724. Now.

  725. The Bible says that we should not be afraid, but

  726. we turned to God. I remember one time in northern California.

  727. It's a year I got married. At the end of

  728. the year that I got married thirty six years ago,

  729. my health broke and I began to develop a fear

  730. that it's never going to go away, that my life

  731. is over shoot. My life hadn't even started, hadn't even started.

  732. But I was afraid, this is the end of my life.

  733. I'm never going to mount anything. Nothing's going to happen

  734. in my life. God isn't going to use me. I'm

  735. going to be an invalid my entire life, and on

  736. and on and on. And I was filled with these fears,

  737. and so we took a month off from work, and

  738. Kay and I went to northern California, where my parents

  739. lived out in the country in the Redwoods.

  740. And while we were there. One day, I got up

  741. in the morning and.

  742. I was so depressed because these fears were just clawing

  743. at my mind all the time. And the phone rang

  744. and my mom picked it up and shed it decay

  745. and the man said, is this where Rick Warren is staying?

  746. And they said, yes, Can I talk to him? She

  747. said yes. She hands me the phone. This guy says, Rick,

  748. we've never met. I don't know you, you don't know me.

  749. I'm calling from San Diego, but I heard that you

  750. were going through a tough time, and I just want

  751. to give you a verse. And it is this God.

  752. It's two Timothy one seven. God has not given us

  753. a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power and

  754. love and self control.

  755. And he hung up.

  756. That verse changed my life. Here it is on the screen.

  757. For the spirit that God has given us does not

  758. make us fearful or timid. Instead, his spirit fills us

  759. with power, love and self control.

  760. Now get this.

  761. The more controlled you are by the Holy Spirit, the

  762. more self control you've got to have, You're gonna have,

  763. You're going to have.

  764. Now get this.

  765. A lot of people are afraid of the Holy Spirit.

  766. It's like, I don't want to be filled with the spirit.

  767. Fill the spirit that'll turn me into some nut I'm

  768. gonna be some religious fanatic. I'm gonna be like some

  769. of those people on TV saying, Babe, you know out

  770. foul spirit of nicotine, you know, And I'm gonna be

  771. falling over backwards, and I'm gonna be you know, I'm

  772. gonna lose control.

  773. Actually it's the exact opposite.

  774. The more you have of the Holy Spirit, the more

  775. self controlled you are. In fact, God does not give us,

  776. it says, a spirit of fear. So if you are afraid,

  777. that's not from God. That fear is not from God.

  778. When God's Spirit comes into your life, you're filled with love.

  779. I want that, you're filled with power. I want that

  780. you're filled with self control.

  781. I want that. Okay, the only spirit I want all

  782. you got film me.

  783. It doesn't make me some nutcase. It makes me more human,

  784. It makes me more natural, It makes me more loving,

  785. It makes me more in self controlled, mastered by the Master.

  786. I can master anything. Throw it at me. I can

  787. handle it. Why because I can do all things through Christ,

  788. who strengthens me. So the spirit in me doesn't make

  789. me a lunatic or religious nut. To be filled with

  790. the spirit makes me more self controlled.

  791. And believe me, brother, you need more self control.

  792. The more spirit controlled I am, the more self controlled

  793. I am.

  794. Number five and three more. Let's move these real quickly.

  795. The fifth thing we learned from Romans eight is about

  796. the antidote to hopelessness, and that's verses seventeen and eighteen.

  797. And the habit I want you to learn to develop

  798. is to focus on the long term, not the short term.

  799. Focus on the long term, not the short term. You know,

  800. there's a very famous study done by Harvard University, very

  801. very famous study that found out that figured out that

  802. the more long term you're thinking is the more successful

  803. you're going to be in life. The shorter term you're

  804. thinking is the more failure you're going to be in life.

  805. People who fail at life have short term thinking. They're

  806. only thinking about today.

  807. They're only thing about here and now, the only thing

  808. about what feels good to me right now. But the

  809. longer term you think, the more successful you'll be in life.

  810. In fact, the longest term thinkers are those who are

  811. most successful in life. Now, as a Christian, we can

  812. win this one hands down because when we think in

  813. terms of long term thinking. We call it eternity because

  814. we're not just thinking about life here on this earth.

  815. We're not thinking about forty fifty years ahead. We're thinking

  816. about trillions and trillions and trillions years ahead. And living

  817. in light of eternity is the key to being the

  818. most successful you could possibly be thinking in long term. Now,

  819. when you think in long term, you're able to handle

  820. short term pain a whole lot better.

  821. You're able to handle.

  822. Short term losses, short term failures, short term hindrances because

  823. you're thinking long term. Here at Saddleback, we went fifteen

  824. years without a building. A lot of pastors would have

  825. given up not having a building for fifteen years. Saddleback

  826. groot over ten thousand people before we built this building.

  827. But it didn't bother me because I was thinking long term,

  828. of in spending my entire life as a pastor of

  829. one church. So fifteen years, so what that's just fifteen years.

  830. I was thinking long term. And while you're thinking about

  831. today and this week for your life as your pastor

  832. who loves you, I'm always thinking ahead for your life.

  833. I'm thinking about what are you going to be at

  834. the end of the year. What are you going to

  835. be at the end of five years. What are you

  836. going to be at the end of ten years. It's

  837. called decade of destiny. And that's why I'm thinking about

  838. how to help you become all God wants you to be.

  839. I'm doing some long term thinking for your life and

  840. going where do I need to take you so that

  841. you'll be what you want to be and what God

  842. wants you to be in ten years.

  843. Most people aren't thinking that.

  844. The whole society teaches you to think short term, and

  845. we'll look at that when we.

  846. Get to the world now.

  847. Romans Chapter eight, verses seventeen and eighteen talks about focusing

  848. on the long term, and it talks about the promises

  849. of God.

  850. The next few verses.

  851. Since we are his children, we will possess circle the

  852. word will. That's a promise that's in the future.

  853. It's not now. Doesn't say we do possess, we will.

  854. It's a long Since we are his children, we will

  855. possess the blessings He keeps for his family, and we

  856. will also possess this is really cool. We will also

  857. possess with Christ what God has kept for him. Did

  858. you know that the Bible says that when you get

  859. to heaven, you're going to get rewarded. You will be

  860. rewarded for how well you did with what you were given.

  861. What did you do with your time, What did you

  862. do with your money, What did you do with your influence?

  863. What did you do with your talents, your time, your talents.

  864. Your treasure. This is called the stewardship of life.

  865. And God has put stuff in your hands, and your

  866. steward of You're going to be evaluated on that in heaven,

  867. and your rewards will be based on that, and you're

  868. going to be rewarded.

  869. But not only that.

  870. The Bible says you're going to be rewarded not just

  871. for how well a steward you are. You're going to

  872. be rewarded for what Jesus did.

  873. Did you know that?

  874. Look at that verse again, it's says and also we

  875. will possess with Christ what God has kept for him.

  876. Did you know that?

  877. The Bible says that in heaven we are going to

  878. co reign with Christ. We're going to be heirs with Christ.

  879. From the Father, We're going to co reign with Christ.

  880. Thes is way for me to explain that is imagine

  881. in heaven this giant theater sign like a big Vegas

  882. sign that's flashing. That says, now starring for eternity, Jesus

  883. Christ co starring your name.

  884. That's what it means to share in Christ's glory. You're

  885. going to do that in heaven.

  886. So you need to focus not on your little pity,

  887. petty pain right now, but on the long term benefits

  888. of doing the right thing and sharing.

  889. In glory forever.

  890. Notice it says the rest of that verse, for if

  891. we share Christ's suffering, we will also share his glory.

  892. I consider that what we suffer at this present time

  893. cannot be compared, in other words, of small potatoes with

  894. all the glory that is going to be revealed in us.

  895. To us, he said, yeah, you know what, it's not

  896. always easy living for Christ. It's not always easy doing

  897. the right thing. It's not always easy making the moral decision.

  898. But the benefit long term is going to far outlast

  899. the pain. You need to focus long term, not short term.

  900. Number six, the sixth habit is to remind myself that

  901. God is good and in control. This is an application

  902. of what the Bible teaches in Romans chapter eight. This

  903. is how God sets us free from the self destructive

  904. weapon of bitterness, or remind myself that God is good

  905. and in control and you are I need to remind

  906. yourself of that over and over and over and over

  907. and over every single day.

  908. Now, I don't have time to get into this.

  909. But in verses nineteen to twenty five of Romans, Chapter eight,

  910. Paul describes how sin has damaged the world. If I

  911. got into this, a sermon would be twice as long.

  912. We don't have time to get into it, so let

  913. me just summarize. In verses nineteen to twenty five, Paul says,

  914. everything in the world is broken. Everything in the world

  915. has lost its original purpose. Everything in the world is suffering.

  916. Everything in the world is in pain, and everything in

  917. the world is frustrated because Sin broke it all down.

  918. Everything is frustrated. In fact, look at this verse on

  919. the screen, verse twenty.

  920. Everything created is subject to frustration, waiting to be liberated,

  921. set free from me, waiting to be liberated from its

  922. bondage to decay. All of creation groans in pain like childbirth,

  923. and we groan inwardly. We're going, oh man, this is tough.

  924. This is hard, This is difficult. Why is life so hard?

  925. Says the environment is groaning. I think earthquakes, and I

  926. think you know, hurricanes, and I think all the wacky weathers.

  927. There is the environment groaning because it's broken, and we

  928. grown in pain because relationships are broken.

  929. And lady, you're going to.

  930. Find out that this Holy spirit groans in pain for you.

  931. There are three groans in this chapter. Now he says

  932. that the result of living in a broken world is pain,

  933. and the result of pain is bitterness.

  934. And that's a self destructive weapon.

  935. When I look out and I go, he's got a

  936. nicer house than I do, she's got a better job

  937. than I do.

  938. How come her kids are like that? How come my?

  939. And you start comparing and you start getting envious and

  940. you start getting jealous, and then people hurt you and

  941. you get bitter, and you get grudges and you get resentful.

  942. That's a pain that's going to eat you up. You've

  943. got to learn how to deal with that weapon of

  944. self destruction. And the way you do it is remind

  945. yourself that God is good and in control. That God

  946. is good, is in control. The result of living in

  947. a broken world is pain, and the result of pain

  948. is bitterness, and as a result, we get bitter inside,

  949. and we start getting resentful and life is unfair. Well, yeah,

  950. what else is new? Life is unfair. It's because it's broken.

  951. But the Bible says in Romans eight that there are

  952. four things you need to remember to get over bitterness.

  953. Now listen, pain in your life is not.

  954. Optional, but misery is.

  955. Pain in your life is You're going to have pain

  956. in your life. It's called life. Suffering in your life

  957. is not optional. You're going to suffer.

  958. Misery is. Moaning is optional.

  959. Bitterness is optional, and you overcome bitterness by remembering four

  960. magnificent truths. In Romans eight, Verse twenty six and twenty

  961. seven says this, the Holy Spirit is praying for me.

  962. You write, write that down. The Holy Spirit is praying

  963. for me. That helps me overcome bitterness because no matter

  964. what I'm going through, I.

  965. Know God's on my side. He's praying for me.

  966. It says here the Spirit helps us with our weakness.

  967. And we don't know how to pray as we should.

  968. But the Spirit himself speaks to God for us. God's

  969. praying to himself. He's talking to himself about you. He said,

  970. how does God talk to himself? Oh, you don't ever

  971. do that. You talk to yourself all the time. When

  972. God talks to himself about you, that's called prayer.

  973. Okay, the spirit of God.

  974. It says praise for us and even begs God for

  975. us with deep feelings that words cannot explain. God sees

  976. what's in our hearts, and the spirit speaks to God

  977. for his people.

  978. In the way that God wants.

  979. So when you're no matter what you're going through, the

  980. first thing he goes, you know what, right now, the

  981. Holy Spirit is praying for me.

  982. That's cool.

  983. Second thing, God is using it all for good. That

  984. second thing, I remember, God is using everything in my

  985. life for good. It's not all good, but he's using

  986. it all for good. The next verse says this, and

  987. we know that in all things God works for the

  988. good of those who love Him, who've been called according

  989. to his purpose. It's not all good, but God is

  990. using it all for good. God is greater than my problems.

  991. God is greater than my enemies. God is greater than

  992. my critics. And God is using it all for good

  993. in my life. Number three, God wants me to succeed.

  994. Did you know that? Did you know that God wants

  995. you to succeed? He doesn't want you to fail in

  996. your life. He wants you to succeed in your life.

  997. God is not against you if you're a Christian, if

  998. you're a believer, God is for you. The Bible says

  999. in verse thirty one, So what can we say against

1000. such wonderful things, about such wonderful things, all the stuff

  1001. we've talked about?

1002. What do we say about all these wonderful things?

1003. If God is for us, who can be against us? Remember,

1004. I'm in the family. My father is God, and so

1005. God wants me to succeed. And finally, number four, God

1006. will give me what I need. When I'm feeling blue

1007. and when I'm feeling bitter, I need to rememb mind

  1008. myself that.

  1009. God is good.

1010. He's in control, his spirit is praying for me. He's

1011. using everything for good in my life. He wants me

1012. to succeed, and He's gonna give me what I need

1013. Verse thirty two. Since God did not spare even his

1014. own son, but gave him up for us all, won't

1015. God give us? Won't God who gave us Christ give.

1016. Us everything else? Wow? He said, if God.

1017. Loves you enough to let Jesus die on the cross

1018. for you, Don't you think he loves you enough to

1019. help you with your debt? Don't you think he cares

1020. enough to help you with your health? Don't you think

1021. he cares about you when your face breaks out? There

1022. is nothing in your life that God doesn't care about.

1023. I threw that one in because it seems so ridiculous.

1024. There is nothing in your life that God doesn't care about.

1025. You got upset tummy? God cares about it. He knows

1026. every hair on your head. God will give me what

1027. I need. If God didn't spare his son to solve

1028. my biggest problem. Everything else is small potatoes. It's all

1029. to him. There is no big problem in your life.

1030. They're all small problems to God. Now, finally we come

1031. to the last habit you need to develop. These are

1032. all mental habits. You need to take this home. Write

1033. it down, put it on your windshield of that windshield

1034. so you can't see it right. Put it on your

1035. mirror in your bathroom. Put it on your refrigerator, put

1036. it on your visor in your car, so every day

1037. you can remind yourself to practice these seven habits that

1038. defeat the habits of self destruction and the seventh habit

1039. destroys the seventh enemy, which is insecurity.

1040. Now. The fact is, when you feel insecure, it really

  1041. messes up your life.

1042. And the worst fear that we have in insecurity is

1043. the rejection. Many of you have experienced rejection. You felt

1044. it from your parents. Why can't you be like your

1045. sister or your brother? You felt rejected by kids on

1046. the playground and they made fun of you and they

1047. made up names. You felt rejected by a boyfriend or

1048. a girlfriend. Maybe you've been rejected by a spouse, and

1049. nothing hurts more than rejection. But one thing I can

1050. tell you this is God's never going to reject you.

1051. And the seventh habit is this trust that God will

1052. never stop loving me. Trust that God will never never

  1053. stop loving me.

1054. I'm in the family. He cannot not love his family.

1055. He will never stop loving me Romans eight thirty eight

1056. and thirty nine in the chapter Now, I'm convinced that

1057. nothing ever can ever separate us from His love. Death can't,

  1058. life can't, the angels can't, demons can't. Satan can't separate

1059. you from God. Our fears for today are worries about tomorrow.

1060. Even the powers of Hell can't keep God's away. Whether

1061. we're high above the sky or in the deepest ocean,

1062. nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate

1063. us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ.

  1064. Jesus our Lord.

1065. I may lose a lot of things in life, but

1066. I'll never lose my salvation. You can't lose it because nothing.

1067. Once you're in God's hand, He's not letting go of you.

1068. You may want to let go, but he's not letting

1069. go of you. You cannot lose your salvation. Now my

1070. question is this, do you belong to Christ? Because none

1071. of these things are true in your life unless you

1072. belong to Christ. Do you have the Holy Spirit in

1073. your life? You say, well, I don't know. Well let's

1074. make certain of it right now. That's bow our heads

1075. and I'm going to pray a prayer as we close,

1076. and I'm going to ask you to pray it. Say

1077. this in your heart, Dear Jesus Christ, thank you for

1078. all that you did for me. Thank you that there's

1079. no condemnation in my life. For all of sudden I've done,

1080. you took that condemnation. Thank you that you did what

1081. the law couldn't do. Thank you that you destroyed sins control.

1082. Thank you that you accomplished the law in my life.

1083. And my righteousness is nothing, but your righteousness is what

1084. ticket I get into heaven on. Help me to never

1085. forget what you did for me. And when I feel ashamed,

1086. let me remember what you did on the cross for me.

1087. Holy Spirit, I ask you to give me better thoughts.

1088. I want to switch mindsets. I don't want the mindset

1089. of self destruction. I want the mindset of life and peace.

1090. I don't want to think my old ways. I want

1091. to think your new ways. I invite you to put

1092. thoughts in my mind all the time, for they are

  1093. the truth.

1094. Help me to remember and realize that I have a

1095. new ability to say no. Lord.

1096. I used to just have willpower, but now I've got

1097. spirit power. I'm not obligated to give into those compulsions anymore.

1098. That if I ask you for help, you'll help me

1099. and give me the strength to say no. Thank you,

1100. that no temptation is too strong. And when I'm afraid,

1101. help me to turn my thoughts to you. Help me

1102. to remember that I'm your child, and help me to

1103. cry out to you Father, Daddy. I'm afraid to focus

1104. on my father, not my fears and help me to

1105. focus on the long term, not the short term. You

1106. know the pain in my life, you know the suffering.

1107. I want you to use it for good and I

1108. want you to use it for your glory. And I

1109. want to look and focus long term on eternity, not

1110. just to hear. And now I want to do the

1111. right thing, not the easy thing. And when I start

1112. to get bitter and I feel life is unfair, and

1113. when I feel hurt, help me to remember that you

1114. God are good and you're in control, that you are

1115. praying for me. Thank you for doing that, That you

1116. are working all things for good. Thank you for doing that.

1117. That you are for me, not against me. Thank you

  1118. for that.

1119. And that you didn't spare Jesus and so you'll give

  1120. us whatever we need.

  1121. Thank you for that.

1122. Most of all, I thank you that you will never

1123. let go of me. You'll never stop loving me, You'll

1124. never reject me. Thank you that I cannot lose my

1125. salvation no matter what else I lose on this planet.

1126. That you will never stop loving me.

1127. If you've never invited Jesus Christ in your heart, Jesus say,

1128. I want you to be my lord, my savior, I

1129. want you to be the manager of my life. I

1130. don't understand it all, but I want to trust in

  1131. you completely.

1132. Thank you for your grace to me.

1133. I want to love you for the rest of my

1134. life and I ask you to accept me into your

  1135. family by faith.

1136. In your name, I pray Amen.
