  1. Hello, and thanks for joining us today on Pastor Rick's

  2. Daily Hope. This is the Bible teaching ministry of Rick Warren,

  3. and today we are continuing in a series called the

  4. Miracle of Mercy. Rick will show us how God's mercy

  5. can lift your guilt, heal your wounds, and transform the

  6. way you live. Let's lean in for part one of

  7. a message called God's Mercy and My Failures.

  8. Because we are an imperfect people and we live in

  9. an imperfect world, we all experience failures in life. And

  10. the night that Jesus Christ was arrested before he went

  11. to the cross, two of his best friends had massive failures.

  12. Massive failures.

  13. Judas had the failure of betrayal and Peter had the

  14. failure of denial. Now they're actually the exact same sin.

  15. They both denied Christ, but they are just different expressions

  16. of it. And Judas rejected the mercy of God and

  17. later went out and killed himself took his life. Peter

  18. accepted the mercy of God and later went out and

  19. became the leader of the church. What I want us

  20. to do this weekend is look at God's mercy and

  21. your failures, and I want us to learn some lessons

  22. from the life of Peter in this massive failure that

  23. he had.

  24. And I want us to ask three questions.

  25. First, what causes personal failure in your life? And we're

  26. going to look and actually see that three things that

  27. Peter had in his life are the three most common

  28. causes of failure in your life. Financial failure, business failure,

  29. marriage failure, relational failure, and all the other areas of

  30. failure are caused primarily by three things. There are many

  31. other uns, but these are the three biggest ones. And

  32. then we're going to look at not only what Peter

  33. did wrong, but what he did right, and how do

  34. you recover? What does God want you to do when

  35. you've had a failure in your life? And then, most

  36. important of all, we're going to look at how does

  37. Jesus respond to our failures and how he shows us mercy.

  38. So let's get right into it.

  39. First, what causes our personal failure? Three things that Peter

  40. did wrong? And the first thing, if you're taking notes

  41. of this, we overestimate our strengths. This is a big

  42. cause of failure in your life. When you think that

  43. you're stronger than you really are, You think you can

  44. handle more, and you can think you can handle temptation.

  45. The story begins in Matthew chapter twenty six. Now they'd

  46. just had the Last Supper, where Jesus said, I'm going

  47. to be arrested, I'm going to die, but three days later,

  48. I'm going to come back to life, and I'll meet

  49. you in Galilee after that, And in verse thirty one

  50. of Matthew twenty six, Jesus says.

  51. This to disciples.

  52. Jesus said, tonight, every one of you will desert me.

  53. Talking to the twelve. It's his small group that's been

  54. with him for three and a half years. Every one

  55. of you will desert me. For the scripture says that

  56. when the shepherd is killed, the sheep will be scattered.

  57. But after I've been raised from the dead, this is

  58. in three days, I will go ahead of you to

  59. Galilee and I'll meet you there. Then Peter boasted, But Lord,

  60. even if everyone else fails you, I will never deny you,

  61. Jesus replied Peter. The truth is that before this night

  62. is over, and before the rooster crows at dawn, you

  63. will deny knowing me. Three times, Peter insisted, But Lord,

  64. I would never do that, even if I have to

  65. die with you. I will never deny knowing you. And

  66. all the other disciples vowed the same thing. They all

  67. made the same You may have never seen that, but

  68. they all said we would never do this. Lord Jesus said,

  69. you're going to do it tonight. He said, when they

  70. take me, arrest me, you're gonna fall to pieces.

  71. You can count on it. Now.

  72. Notice three times Peter says, I'll never deny you. I

  73. would never do that, and I would never deny knowing.

  74. You at all.

  75. Ever, this is overestimating our strengths. A lot of businesses

  76. fail from overestimating their strengths. A lot of battles are

  77. lost because armies overestimated their strength. A lot of people

  78. students flunk out of school because they overestimated their strengths.

  79. A lot of spouses fall into affairs because they overestimated

  80. their strength. I can handle this. It's just a harmless

  81. little office flirt. There's nothing going to happen from it.

  82. I can handle this. Beware of thinking this could never

  83. happen to me.

  84. Now.

  85. First Corinthians ten, verse twelve says this, if you think

  86. I'm strong, I can handle this, I'd never fall for

  87. that temptation. Then be careful, for you could easily fall.

  88. To the Bible says, one of the reasons we have

  89. so many fails in our lives. In our lives is

  90. because we think we're stronger than we really are. Don't

  91. be naive, don't be self confident. Don't none of us

  92. are exempt. Given the right situation, I am capable of

  93. any sin.

  94. So are you.

  95. Given the right situation, you are capable of any sin,

  96. and so am I. And the Bible says, the heart

  97. is deceitful and we should stop kidding ourselves now. I

  98. don't have time to go into this in detail. But

  99. not only do we have failings in our life because

  100. we overestimate our strengths, but also we misuse our strengths.

  101. You see, you tend to guard your weaknesses. You know

  102. what you're weak at. You know what's you're weak at. See,

  103. I gotta stay away from that because I'm.

  104. Weak at that.

  105. But you don't pay any attention to your And when

  106. you don't pay attention to your strengths, they become weaknesses too.

  107. In fact, write this down. An unguarded strength is a

  108. double weakness. An unguarded strength is a double weakness. The

  109. very area you think, man, there's no way I'd mess

  110. up on that. You're setting yourself up. The Bible says

  111. for failure, there's a sense of pride there the very

  112. area you may have just had a major victory, maybe

  113. exactly where you stumble next. You know, Sometimes it's after

  114. a big success that then you have the failure. Sometimes

  115. it's after you've been to a very strong spiritual crisis

  116. and you came out of it and you actually made it,

  117. that you let your guard down. Jesus was tempted in

  118. the desert immediately after his baptism, which was a big experience.

  119. Peter had his biggest failure denying Christ right after the

  120. Last Supper, which was a very intimate, important, powerful experience. Ever,

  121. presume that you know where temptation is going to come from.

  122. We overestimate our strengths. Second reason we fail, this one's

  123. even bigger. We fear the disapproval of others. You may

  124. not realize it, but this causes more problems in your

  125. life than almost anything else. We fear the disapproval of

  126. other people. Every time you make a decision based on

  127. what other people would think, you are sowing the seeds

  128. for failure in your life.

  129. Because when you.

  130. Worry about what will other people think, when you fear disapproval,

  131. when you fear disapproval, you go with the flow, even

  132. when you know it's the wrong thing. You go with

  133. the flow because you know, go along to get along.

  134. And you're become a people pleaser, and you become a coward,

  135. and you make commitments that you can't possibly keep simply

  136. because you're trying.

  137. To make everybody happy.

  138. Now we see this as the second reason Peter stumbled

  139. in his in his denials in Matthew, chapter twenty six,

  140. verse fifty eight. In sixty nine and seventy, the Bible

  141. says this, after they had left the last supper in

  142. the upper room, Peter followed Jesus at a distance.

  143. Now there's a problem right there.

  144. That's a major problem following Jesus at a distance. But

  145. he followed Jesus at a distance to the courtyard of

  146. the High priest Palace, and he went in and he

  147. sat down with the guards, the Roman guards, to see

  148. what was going to happen to Jesus. He's being being arrested,

  149. He's going to be tortured. Peter wants to know what's

  150. going on. As Peter was sitting in the courtyard. A

  151. servant girl came up to him and said, you, you know,

  152. I recognize you. You You were with Jesus of Galilee,

  153. weren't you, but standing there in front of everyone? Now

  154. that's the operational phrase, standing there in front of everyone.

  155. Peter denied it. I don't even know what you're talking about.

  156. He said, now, think about this Jesus. Peter is just

  157. spent three and a half years with Jesus Christ, the

  158. Son of God. He's lived with him for three and

  159. a half years, and the first time the rubber hits

  160. the road, he's in the clinch. He's in the crisis.

  161. He denies us, I don't even know what you're talking about.

  162. He's more worried about what other people think than he

  163. is about identifying with Christ. How many times have you

  164. had the opportunity to admit you were a Christian at

  165. work or somewhere else, and you said nothing because you

  166. were worried about what other people think. And this thing

  167. actually happens in our life all the time, not just

  168. with witnessing about our faith, but in so many areas

  169. you stumble and you have failures because you are thinking

  170. more about what somebody else thinks than about what God thinks.

  171. He said, I don't even know the person now. Peter

  172. struggled with people pleasing his entire life. I could give

  173. you many examples in his life. One time Paul had

  174. to actually rebuke him and say, hey, Peter, you know

  175. you're acting this way with this group over here, and

  176. you act this way with this group over here. You're

  177. trying to please everybody. You can't do that. Before we

  178. go on, let me just ask you some consider some questions.

  179. Personally.

  180. Are you following Jesus at a distance? You say, you know,

  181. I want to be a follower Jesus. I just don't

  182. want to get too close to him. I don't want

  183. to be a radical. I don't want to be a fanatic.

  184. I want to follow Jesus at a distance. That is

  185. a setup for failure. It's trying to have a foot

  186. in both worlds. It doesn't work that way. The Bible

  187. tells us that Peter was just sitting around waiting for

  188. something to happen. Do you find yourself doing that, sitting

  189. around waiting for something to happen. That's a setup for

  190. failure in your life. And then Peter was worried about

  191. what other people thought. Let me ask you this, whose

  192. opinion matters to you more than God's? Whose opinion matters

  193. to you more than God's? And you're more worried about

  194. what they think than doing the right thing or saying

  195. the right thing. When you let anybody else be more

  196. important than God in your life, they become your God.

  197. And that's called an idol, and that's a setup for failure.

  198. More important even than that of whose opinion matters to

  199. you more than God?

  200. Is this question?

  201. Have you ever asked yourself why the opinions of other

  202. people matter so much to you? Have you ever even

  203. asked yourself that Why you cringe at any criticism, why

  204. you hate it so much? Why it just turns your

  205. stomach in a nod if somebody disagrees with you. Have

  206. you ever asked yourself? Why am I such a coward

  207. when it comes to being different?

  208. Why do other people's opinion.

  209. Matter to me so very very much that I'll even

  210. do the wrong thing in order to please somebody maybe

  211. I don't even like. Have you even asked yourself why

  212. that happens? Why it matters to you so much? Socrates said,

  213. the unexamined life is not worth living. I say the

  214. unexamined life is a setup for failure because the part

  215. of me that causes me the most trouble is the

  216. part of me that I don't know about. And when

  217. I live in denial of an area of my life,

  218. I don't know why I do what I do. If

  219. I'm in the dark about why I do what I do,

  220. I'm never going to grow out of it. I'm going

  221. to be stuck in that rut the rest of my life.

  222. And the same thing is true with you. The part

  223. of you that causes you the most problem are the

  224. parts of you.

  225. You're afraid to look at.

  226. The parts of you that you are in denial about,

  227. the parts of you of why you act away and

  228. you maybe even never even asked, why am I so

  229. controlled by the opinions of other people? Why is it

  230. that I can't handle the disapproval of anybody else? It

  231. just makes me sick, It uspects me. I'll do almost

  232. anything to avoid somebody disapproving of me.

  233. Why does that matter so much? Until you figure.

  234. That out, you're going to keep stumbling and stumbling and

  235. falling and failing in that area. Now, the answer is

  236. the reason why you're worried about the fear of disapproval.

  237. Is there's always a wound behind that, a hidden wound

  238. is always behind the fear of the disapproval of other people.

  239. There's something that triggers in your mind, that fear. And

  240. maybe it was a rejection in the past. Maybe it

  241. was an unmet need that you had growing up. Maybe

  242. it was some hurt, Maybe it was a trauma that

  243. happened in your life, a pain or an injury, as

  244. I said, some kind of unmet need. But there's some pain,

  245. and it's a deep pain, and it's so deep it's

  246. hidden in you. I call it soul pain. The worst

  247. kind of pain is soul pain. That's the kind of

  248. pain you don't even know why you're in pain. You

  249. don't even know why you do what you do. That

  250. soul pain is always related to your identity. If you

  251. don't know who you are as a woman, if you

  252. don't know who you are as a man, you will

  253. be manipulated by the disapproval of other people the rest

  254. of your life. And you'll find yourself backing down when

  255. people say, are you a Christian? Well, yeah, and you

  256. won't stand up for what you believe, and you won't

  257. do the thing that's right because you.

  258. Don't know who you are.

  259. The Bible says in Proverbs twenty nine to twenty five,

  260. it is a dangerous trap to be concerned with what

  261. others think of you. But if you trust the Lord,

  262. you will be safe. He said, I'm already a goner.

  263. I've already fallen into the trap if I'm more worried

  264. about what other people think than doing the right thing

  265. or what God says is the right thing to do

  266. or say, or think or feel. Peter overestimated his strength.

  267. I would never do this. It'll never happen to me.

  268. I can handle this temptation.

  269. I know what I'm.

  270. Doing, adult can I can watch these kind of things.

  271. That it doesn't bother me. Who you kidding?

  272. I can go to these kind of places and it

  273. doesn't bother me.

  274. Who are you kidding?

  275. I can listen to this kind of stuff and it

  276. doesn't bother me.

  277. Who are you gidding?

  278. We all worry about air pollution, but we ought to

  279. worry about mind pollution. The stuff you allow in your brain,

  280. garbage in, garbage out. When we think you're strong and

  281. you're not. When you're worried about the approval of other people.

  282. You're gonna you're gonna have failures in your life. And

  283. then there's a third one that we see in Peter's life,

  284. and this one's the biggest of all we fail. One

  285. of the causes of personal failure is we speak without thinking. Hello,

  286. this may be the most common cause of all failure

  287. in your life. We put our mouth in motion before

  288. we put our mind in gear, and we speak impulsively,

  289. and we speak rashly, and we speak in haste, and

  290. we speak thoughtlessly, and we don't pause to consider the

  291. damage of what we're about to say, what it's going

  292. to do in the lives of other people, or even

  293. in our own lives. And we just speak impulsively. And

  294. the true reason is we don't think rationally. We think emotionally.

  295. Most of the time when you talk, you're not thinking

  296. about what you're talking about. You're not thinking rationally. You're

  297. not thinking what's the unintended consequence of what I'm about

  298. to say. You never stopped to say, Lord, do you

  299. want me to say this? You're not asking God, is

  300. this the right thing to say at the right time,

  301. in the right way. Now, you just say whatever you feel.

  302. People say well, I just say whatever I feel. Is

  303. if that's a mark of courage, No, that's a mark

  304. of immaturity. Children do that, they say whatever they feel.

  305. Adults need to learn to have a governor on their mouth.

  306. And so when you feel envy, you speak an envy,

  307. And when you feel jealousy, you speak in jealousy. And

  308. when you feel insecure, you say things that reveal your insecurity.

  309. And when you're frustrated, and when you're angry, you say

  310. things in anger. And when you're afraid, you say things

  311. in fear, not even thinking about the consequences. The reason

  312. why we have so many failures in our life is

  313. because we speak without thinking.

  314. Wow, some powerful words from Pastor Rick. And now this

  315. really is one of my favorite parts of the broadcast.

  316. Letters from our listeners.

  317. Here's Rick, Hi, everybody, today, I want to share with

  318. you a special testimony from Delia. Delia says that Daily

  319. Hope has helped her with deep anxiety. But then she

  320. also shared about what happened as she began to share

  321. Daily Hope with her parents. She writes this, Pastor Rick,

  322. a couple years ago, I found myself pretty lost. My

  323. company had a merger and all the senior management were

  324. changed overnight, and I was among them. At the same time,

  325. my long term relationship ended. Then a couple months later,

  326. my father was diagnosed with colon cancer. I was in

  327. shock and I fell into a deep depression from all

  328. these changes. In fact, every day I experienced a panic attack.

  329. But then I found your teaching on Daily Hope, and

  330. it just seemed that you understood every emotion that I

  331. was going through, emotions that I didn't even know how

  332. to verbalize to other people. But it was Daily Hope

  333. that helped me get out of bed every morning and

  334. gave me the strength to get through each day. Through

  335. your teaching on Daily Hope pastorrect, I was able to

  336. experience God's love.

  337. And power like never before. You know.

  338. I even translated the Daily Hope devotional for my parents

  339. who don't speak English, and they accepted Jesus too.

  340. That's amazing, Delia.

  341. I am so grateful for you and the team at

  342. Daily Hope because it has become the morning routine that

  343. I can't live without now. Delia, you have been through

  344. more pain than I can possibly imagine, some very very

  345. challenging times, and I'm sorry, I really am.

  346. I'm sorry.

  347. Sometimes we experience multiple traumas at the same time, and

  348. when that happens, that's when we really need the hope

  349. of Jesus Christ. And I'm so glad you experienced that,

  350. that you found God's love and found God's power. And

  351. what a blessing that you translated the daily hope devotionals

  352. for your parents and then they accepted Christ. That's amazing.

  353. I am celebrating with you that they are now in

  354. the family of God. It's stories like yours that just

  355. encourage me and keep me going. So thanks so much

  356. for taking the time to write and share your story.

  357. And by the way, anybody else listen. If you have

  358. a story, please write me. I would love to read

  359. it and love to share it if I can with others.

  360. You'll encourage other people with your story. God bless you.

  361. Thanks so much, Rick, And if you'd like to let

  362. Rick know how much this broadcast has meant to you,

  363. how it's blessed you, please send him an email at

  364. Rick at pastorick dot com. That's Rick at pastorick dot com.

  365. Rick looks so forward to reading those emails. Be sure

  366. to join us next time as we look into God's.
