  1. Hey, everyone, I'm so glad you're here with us today.

  2. This is Pastor Rick's Daily Hope with Rick Warren, and

  3. today we start a series called The Keys to a

  4. Blessed Life. In these messages, Rick walks through Jesus's Sermon

  5. on the Mount and shows us how to live a

  6. truly hopeful and purpose filled life. Now, let's get started

  7. with part one of it depends on who you depend on.

  8. You know.

  9. Probably the most common greeting that you know you hear,

  10. particularly among believers, is God bless you. And we say

  11. it not just when people sneeze. We say God bless you.

  12. Have you ever thought of what in the world does

  13. that mean? What's a blessing? How do you define a blessing?

  14. Would you know a blessing if it slapped you in

  15. the face. I mean, the Bible says it sometimes a

  16. problem is a blessing. So when you say God bless them,

  17. really great, you say, given a bunch of problems, Really,

  18. what in the world is a blessing? And if you

  19. pray for God to bless somebody, how do you even

  20. know if it's happened or not. If you don't know

  21. what a blessing is? The word blessed in the Bible

  22. is the Greek word macarios macarios, and macarios is the

  23. word for happy, happy. It is the word for happiness.

  24. To be blessed is to be happy. To have a

  25. blessing is to have happiness in your life. And when

  26. Jesus talks about you're blessed if you do this, he's

  27. saying you're going to be happy if you do this.

  28. It's the exact same word. Now, today we're going to

  29. begin quite a long series through Jesus' most famous sermon.

  30. It's called the Sermon on the Mountain. And Jesus begins

  31. the Sermon on the mount by talking about eight ways

  32. to be blessed by God to receive God's blessing on

  33. your life. You could call it eight ways to be happy.

  34. The truth is, I want you as your pastor. I

  35. love you. I love you, and I want God to

  36. bless your life. I want him to bless your relationships.

  37. If you're in school, I want him to bless your studies.

  38. If you're married, I want you to bless your marriage.

  39. I want him to bless your finances. I want God

  40. to bless your health. I want God to bless your talent.

  41. I want God to bless your future. So I'm extremely

  42. interested in how to receive the blessings of God. Now,

  43. as we study scripture, we find that the problem isn't

  44. with God. The problem is with us. God wants to

  45. bless your life. You just have to get blessable, and

  46. a lot of us don't live lives in ways that

  47. God can bless. God isn't going to bless sin. God

  48. isn't going to bless arrogance. God isn't going to bless indifference,

  49. A lot of things God will not bless. And so

  50. when Jesus starts his most famous sermon, the first thing

  51. he begins with, I'm going to teach you the eight

  52. conditions for receiving God's blessing in your life. And for

  53. the next eight weeks, we're going to look at each

  54. of those eight conditions in detail. We're calling at the

  55. keys to a blessed life. Now, let me read the

  56. first verses in Matthew chapter five. The Sermon on the

  57. Mount is in Matthew chapter five, chapter six, and chapter seven.

  58. We're going to go through all three of those chapters,

  59. verse by verse in the days ahead. And chapter five

  60. starts like this when Jesus saw the crowds. He went

  61. up on the mountain, and after he sat down, his

  62. disciples came to him and he began to teach them. Now,

  63. notice in Bible times, the teacher always sat and the

  64. people the audience always stood. I think that's a good idea.

  65. I want to be like Jesus. So maybe I'll just

  66. sit down right now, and I'm going to ask all

  67. of you to stand up for the next forty five minutes.

  68. All right now, No, we won't do that, but you know,

  69. I want to be like Jesus. Jesus doesn't wear socks,

  70. so I don't wear socks. But Jesus, it says, sat down.

  71. That was the way they taught in those days. The

  72. teacher sat and everybody else stood. And then he gives

  73. the first of these eight conditions for being blessed by God.

  74. And he says this, blessed are the poor in spirit,

  75. for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Now that doesn't

  76. tell me a whole lot because I don't understand most

  77. of the words in that verse. First, I don't know

  78. what poor in spirit needs, and I don't know what

  79. the Kingdom of Heaven is. So we've got to unpack

  80. this for you to understand the benefit to your life. First,

  81. what is the Kingdom of Heaven? Is that different from

  82. the Kingdom of God. Well, I'm going to ask you

  83. to hold your questions on this because I promise you

  84. in this series we're gonna deal in depth with this issue.

  85. We're going to look at what is the Kingdom of

  86. God and why it is so incredibly important to your

  87. life and why you definitely want to be a part

  88. of it. And we're going to go into that in detail,

  89. explaining what is the Kingdom of God. But this week,

  90. as we start the series, I want to want us

  91. to look at just the first six words of Jesus'

  92. most famous sermon, and the first six words he starts with.

  93. The first word he starts with blessed. Now, I like

  94. that God starts teaching with a blessing. He doesn't start

  95. with let me give you eight curses. He gives you

  96. eight blessing. That's my kind of preacher. And he says,

  97. let me tell you eight ways to be happy. That's

  98. the first things Jesus talks about in the Sermon on

  99. the Mount. Here's what he says, Blessed of the poor

  100. in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. So

  101. the first word out of his mouth to you is

  102. a blessing. Now, what does it mean to be poor

  103. in spirit? Well, he's not talking about physical power. He

  104. doesn't say blessed to the poor. He says blessed to

  105. the poor in spirit. He's not talking about economic poverty.

  106. He's not talking about material poverty. He's not talking about

  107. physical poverty. He's talking about spiritual poverty. He's talking about

  108. maintaining a certain kind of attitude. For you to understand this,

  109. I put there on your outline several other translations of

  110. this verse so you could actually see a fuller understanding

  111. of what it means to be poor in spirit. For instance,

  112. the New Living translation says God blesses those who realize

  113. their need for Him. The God's Word translation says God

  114. blesses those who recognize their spiritually helpless. The Common English

  115. version says God blesses those who are who depend only

  116. on Him. And New Century version says God blesses those

  117. who know they have a great spiritual have great spiritual needs.

  118. You can see pattern development here. He's saying, I recognize

  119. that I am inadequate to live my life without God.

  120. Without God in my life, I am spiritually poor. Without

  121. God's help in my life, I am spiritually poor. I

  122. am inadequate. A good verse that helps clarify this is

  123. someone forty six there in your outlined verse five. The

  124. Lord blesses everyone who trusts him and depends on him.

  125. Circle the word trust and the word depend. This is

  126. the first condition for God's blessing on your life. You've

  127. got to trust him, You've got to depend on Him.

  128. And that's what it means to be poor in spirit. Fact,

  129. let me give you a definition. Why don't you write

  130. this down? To be poor in spirit, which is the

  131. first condition for God's blessing on your life, means I

  132. humbly depend on God instead of myself. That's what it means.

  133. To be poor in spirit means I humbly depend on

  134. God instead of myself because I know I'm inadequate to

  135. handle all the problems that face me in life. So

  136. if I want God's blessing on my relationship to my girlfriend,

  137. my boyfriend, my husband, and my wife or anybody else,

  138. then I've got to be dependent upon God. If I

  139. want God's blessing in my work, in my career, in

  140. my studies. If I want God's blessing in my finances

  141. and my health, I have to humbly depend on God

  142. instead of myself. So then the question becomes, how do

  143. you do that? How do I actually depend on God

  144. on a daily basis and on a moment by moment basis. Well,

  145. this weekend, I want to give you five practical ways

  146. to do this from the Word of God. And these

  147. are five practical ways. You can practice every one of

  148. them this week. And if you practice these, you will

  149. become a woman or a man who is poor in spirit,

  150. which means you depend on God rather than yourself. You

  151. understand your need for God in your life. And then

  152. that's the kind of woman, that's the kind of man

  153. that God says I like to bless. So let me

  154. just get right into it. You might write this first

  155. one down five ways to express my dependence on God.

  156. Number one, to be blessed by God. First, I depend

  157. on God's wisdom, not mine. I depend on God's wisdom,

  158. not my wisdom, not my own. Other words, I listen

  159. to what God says, I follow what God says to do,

  160. and I do what he says to do. Now, let's

  161. look at some verses together from the Bible, Proverbs, chapter fourteen,

  162. Verse twelve says this, there is a way, There is

  163. a way that seems right to a man. In the end,

  164. it leads to death. Now a circle, the word seems

  165. there's a way that seems right to us, to human beings,

  166. but an end, it's a dead end, he said. Our

  167. ideas often lead to dead ends. It leads to death.

  168. Have you ever in your life had this feeling that

  169. something was so very very very right and you just

  170. knew it was the right thing to do, and you

  171. felt it with all your heart, and then you did

  172. it and it ended up being so very very wrong,

  173. or it became a total fiasco and a failure. That's

  174. what this verse is all about. There's a way that

  175. seems right to us, but it often ends, he says,

  176. in a dead end. And every one of us could

  177. give a testimony on this, where you've had this feeling,

  178. this hunch that this is the perfect job and it

  179. ends up being a dead end. This is the peronaked relationship,

  180. the one I've always needed, the one I've always wanted,

  181. and that relationship ends up a dead end. This is

  182. the perfect person that I should marry and I know

  183. this is the person, and we all know people who

  184. made that decision and it flopped miserably. Parents will often think,

  185. I know this is the right thing to say to

  186. my kids, and then it has the exact opposite effect

  187. on the kids. It happens in friendships. It can happen investments.

  188. I know this is where I should put my money.

  189. This is a sure winner, this is a big deal.

  190. I know if I invest in this man, I'm going

  191. to clean house. It's gonna be great. And then it

  192. just totally flops. You could probably and we could probably

  193. spend the rest of the night doing this. Think of

  194. painful examples where you wish that you would listen to

  195. God instead of your gut, because God is filled with

  196. truth and your gut is filled with pea. So your

  197. gut's off and wrong. Just because you think it doesn't

  198. make it right, and just because you feel it certainly

  199. doesn't make it right. Feelings lie, They lie to you

  200. all the time. I mean, there used to there's an

  201. old country Western song that says, how could it be

  202. wrong when it feels so right? Are you kidding me?

  203. There are a lot of things that are wrong that

  204. feel so right at the moment, Are you kidding me?

  205. That's about the most immature, stupid thing you could say,

  206. because a lot of stuff feels so right and it

  207. ends up being so bad. And six months later you're

  208. saying about that relationship, what was I thinking? How in

  209. the world did I get messed up in that one?

  210. How did I get my life so entangled in something

  211. so stupid? And now I'm scarred and I'm hurt, and

  212. I'm burdened, and I'm going Am I going to recover

  213. from this? The Bible says there's a way that seems right,

  214. but it ends in a dead end. So the first

  215. way to get God's blessing in your life is I

  216. depend on God's wisdom, not my feelings, not my thoughts,

  217. not whatever else is telling me. I depend on God's wisdom,

  218. not mind. Now, if you want to have fewer dead

  219. ends in your life, you want to have fewer defeats,

  220. fewer failures in your life. This is verse next verses

  221. for you. Proverbs three five to seven. Trust the Lord

  222. with all your heart. Do not depend on your own

  223. understanding others. Don't depend on your wisdom. Don't depend on

  224. what you think is the right thing. To do. Don't

  225. depend on your hunches and your feelings. Those are often

  226. lead you astray. Do not depend on your understanding. Seek

  227. his will. God's will in all you do and everything

  228. you do, how you spend your time, your money, your relationships, everything,

  229. and he God promises he will direct your paths. Don't

  230. be impressed with your own wisdom. What he's staying there.

  231. Don't go around saying I got this all figured out,

  232. I can handle this. I'm a big girl, I'm a

  233. big guy. I know what I'm doing. I've got it

  234. all figured out. I got a plan. He's saying, don't

  235. be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, respect the Lord

  236. and turn your back on evil. So, if I really

  237. want God's blessing, the first thing is I depend on

  238. God's wisdom, not what my feelings say, not what my

  239. gut says, not what my friends say, not what I think.

  240. But I trust in the Lord with all my heart

  241. and lean not on my own understanding. Now, how do

  242. I get God's wisdom? Two ways? You pray and you read.

  243. You pray, you talk to God and you read the Bible.

  244. You let him talk to you, and that's how you

  245. get God's wisdom. Look at this next verse. The Bible

  246. says in James Chapter one, verse five, if any of you,

  247. any of you lacks wisdom, you should pray and ask God,

  248. who gives it grudgingly and sparingly to all. That's not

  249. what it says. If any of you lacks wisdom, you

  250. should pray and ask God who gives it. Read it

  251. with me, generously and graciously at all. Now, notice he

  252. gives it to everybody all. You got to just ask

  253. for it. You don't have to be qualified for it.

  254. I have to just ask for it. You see, God

  255. doesn't want you to hit dead ends. God doesn't want

  256. you to go through failure after failure after failure after

  257. failure in your life. God wants you to succeed in

  258. your life. He wants you to be wise. He wants

  259. you to make smart decisions with your time, your money,

  260. your relationships, and everything else. And it's not like you're

  261. waiting on him. He's waiting on you. God saying, hey,

  262. I'm here and I'll give you wisdom, and I'll give

  263. it generously, and I'll give it graciously. I'm not grudging

  264. about it. I love to give you. I want to

  265. make you wise. But you just got it. Ask now,

  266. how do you know when you are living on God's

  267. wisdom rather than on your wisdom? How do you know

  268. if you're really depending on God's wisdom you're talking to

  269. God throughout your entire day and you're reading His word

  270. on a daily basis. If you're not talking to God

  271. throughout your whole day, God, I'm getting ready to go

  272. into this meeting, I'm getting ready to go into this class.

  273. I'm getting ready to go meet with some friends. What

  274. do I do? What do I say? And you're not

  275. talking to God like that all day? And if you're

  276. not reading God's word on a daily basis, you are

  277. depending on your own wisdom. You're just fooling yourself. You're

  278. not depending on God's wisdom, You're depending on your own.

  279. And it's why you have so many problems and why

  280. so many things fall through and why you end up

  281. with so much pain in your life because you're not

  282. depending on God's wisdom. By reading the book and talking

  283. to the author, would you write this down. God's wisdom

  284. and God's will are in God's word. God's wisdom and

  285. will is in God's word. They're in God's word, God's

  286. wisdom and will are in God's Word, and if you're

  287. not in the Word, you don't know God's will. And

  288. if you're not in the Word, you don't have God's wisdom.

  289. And if you don't have God's wisdom, you can't be blessed.

  290. So that's the starting point. I got to pray talk

  291. to the Lord, and I gotta let him talk to me.

  292. Let me give you another one number two. If I

  293. really want God's blessing on my life and not only

  294. depend on God's wisdom, I depend on God's strength, not mine.

  295. I depend on God's strength, God's power, God's energy, not mine.

  296. Now you've probably noticed that you often get tired. In fact,

  297. you're tired a lot, and at the end of the day,

  298. you're kind of worn out and you run out of energy.

  299. And the reason why he's real simple. You're a human being.

  300. Your strength is limit. God's strength is unlimited. Your strength

  301. is finite. God's strength is infinite. Your strength is exhaustible.

  302. That's why you get exhausted. God's strength is inexhaustible. God

  303. never runs out of energy. God never gets tired, And

  304. so I need to depend on God's strength, not my own.

  305. Let me show you some verses Psalm eighty four, verse five.

  306. God says you bless all who depend on you for

  307. their strength. You want God's blessing in your life, You

  308. need to depend on God for your strength. Now what

  309. do you do when your strength evaporates. You're at the

  310. end of the day, and you know, I'm just out

  311. of steam. I'm abount of energy. I don't have the

  312. energy to go into this next week. I got too

  313. many things to do and not enough energy to do it.

  314. Here's a good promise, Isaiah forty thirty one. Those who

  315. trust in the Lord for help will find their strength renewed.

  316. They will rise on wings like eagles. They will run

  317. and not get weary, they will walk and not grow weak.

  318. And I'll give you a personal testimony on this one.

  319. I have been living this verse this one Isaiah forty

  320. thirty one, because there's no way I could face the

  321. loss of my son on my own energy, on my

  322. own strength. I needed God to pull me through many,

  323. many dark times. Now, let me just say this, in

  324. the darkest moments of your life, when you cannot see

  325. your way forward, it doesn't matter what they are, where

  326. they came from. In the darkest moments of your life.

  327. You need God's strength to get you through. And the

  328. reason why most people never get through it is they

  329. don't have God's strength. I've seen people go through a

  330. divorce and they never recover. I've seen people go through

  331. a breakup and they never recover. I've seen people go

  332. through a major illness. I've seen them go through a

  333. bankruptcy or getting fired, are getting laid off, or getting arrested.

  334. I've seen people go through all kinds of different things

  335. and you know, abuse, and they never recover. Why because

  336. they're depending on their own strength. You're not going to

  337. get through it on your own strength. You're gonna get

  338. stuck at that stage and you get miserable the rest

  339. of your life. The only way you get through the

  340. darkest days of your life, it's on God's strength. You

  341. got to depend on him.

  342. Such a great message by Rick today and every day.

  343. I sure hope you were just as encouraged as I was.

  344. And now here's Rick with an important message.

  345. Hi everybody, thanks so much for listening today. You know,

  346. my hope is that God uses this broadcast to help

  347. deepen your relationship with Jesus. Now these daily Hope messages

  348. are distributed on radio stations and digital platforms all across

  349. the globe, and listeners are writing and letting us know

  350. that their lives are being changed. They're telling us that

  351. they're walking with Jesus and that guilt and fear has

  352. been chased from their lives by God's love. You know,

  353. relationships are being restored and marriages are being healed, and

  354. many people are saying that they've found their life purpose.

  355. I want to say thank you to you, because we're

  356. only able to carry the hope of Jesus to these

  357. people all around the world because of gifts from generous

  358. listeners like you. I just wanted to say I am

  359. so grateful for your prayers and your financial support. Now,

  360. I understand in times like these many of you are

  361. unable to give financial support. Hear it from me. That's okay,

  362. because I never want anybody to give unless God leads

  363. them to give. That's between you and God, not between

  364. you and me, but between you and God. Are a

  365. continual and incredible contribution to this Daily Hope ministry. Now,

  366. if you do want to give a financial gift, I've

  367. got some really great news to share with you. There's

  368. a generous friend of Daily Hope Broadcast who is offering

  369. to match the amount of your gift. In other words,

  370. if you give twenty dollars, then that person's combined it

  371. with a grant to make your gift forty dollars. Now,

  372. if you've never given a gift to Daily Hope, I

  373. want you to pray about partnering with us so that

  374. together we can continue to share the hope of Jesus

  375. throughout the whole world. I love you so much.
