  1. Hello, and welcome to Pastor Rick's Daily Hope with Rick Warren.

  2. We are so glad you're here with us. Today.

  3. We're going to continue our series called the Keys to

  4. a Blessed Life. And when these messages, Rick walks through

  5. Jesus' Sermon on the Mount and shows us how to

  6. live a truly hopeful and purpose filled life. And now

  7. here's part two of handling opposition to your faith.

  8. So these are the three things I need to remember

  9. whenever harassment comes in my life. It can make me

  10. more like Jesus. It can deepen my faith, and I'm

  11. going to be rewarded for it in eternity, forever and

  12. ever and ever. Now, there are six things you need

  13. to do. You need to do. Before we look at

  14. those six things, I want us to look at a

  15. short video clip of some of the kind of harassment

  16. that's going on around the world right now. Watch this

  17. on the screen.

  18. I'm from us family the days in the year two

  19. thousand dreams. My father called me and he gave me two.

  20. Options, either to leave Jesus or to leave the family.

  21. My belief in Jesus is much stronger than any other

  22. relation that I have got. That's why I quit everything

  23. and kept Jesus.

  24. The Muslim radical shouted, demanding heavy punishment, as heavy as possible.

  25. They came every day. After my father was told of

  26. my imprisonment, he said, I am proud of my daughter

  27. for the suffering she experienced for Christ. This is a

  28. great thing that God is doing in your life. So

  29. don't expect to get out of prison to soon. Just

  30. finish what the Lord has a sign.

  31. You to do.

  32. Just keep on preaching the gospel.

  33. In a letter dated January tenth, nineteen ninety four, my

  34. father wrote, I praised the Lord that in the midst

  35. of the heavy attack on the fast growing Church of

  36. Jesus Christ, the Lord has given the joy of the

  37. privilege of suffering for his name to all members of

  38. the church.

  39. Please don't worry about me. I'm quite ready for anything.

  40. Nine days after this letter that was written by Heiki

  41. was martyred.

  42. Two months ago, one of my father's neighbors gave me

  43. a call and told me that your sister had just died.

  44. I went to the funeral, but my whole family came

  45. against me. They kicked me and they beat me, and

  46. I had two broken ribs.

  47. This is truly a time of suffering because I got

  48. separated from my family. My children need their mother beside

  49. them because they are still small, and I missed them

  50. terribly too. But God's grace is sufficient. All social time

  51. is past your high. He was so humble, Master, and

  52. he had peace in his heart.

  53. When I see him in heaven, I'm going.

  54. To say, thank you. You are the one who caused

  55. me to love Jesus.

  56. Jo Brown. At his funeral, they gave us a booklet

  57. with Brother Hike's biography.

  58. And this verse was written in the first page. I

  59. read it there and I will never forget it.

  60. The persecution and the suffering we went through, really it

  61. is nothing compared to the glory of God. I came

  62. to understand the beauty of the unity of the Body

  63. of Christ, and how when one part suffers, all the

  64. parts suffer. So in the future I want to do

  65. the same thing for other Christians who are suffering.

  66. For Christ he should move out to.

  67. My sister is gone now, But what gives me more

  68. comfort about her is that before she died, she made

  69. her decision to follow Jesus Christ, and she died serving

  70. him first of all.

  71. When Brother hug was with us, his words were with us.

  72. He ministered to us each day for the orbishop. But

  73. even in his death, God did such great things.

  74. I don't know whom.

  75. I want him to know this. I want him to

  76. see that his blood was not useless. After they killed you,

  77. many like me came to Christ. And now I am

  78. ready to die for Jesus.

  79. You trusting.

  80. I'll say it again. I'll say it again. Christianity is

  81. not for weaklings, for whimps, for the faint of heart.

  82. It takes courageous men, it takes courageous women to follow Jesus. Now,

  83. these people are suffering in so many areas. We will

  84. never suffer as Americans. But what is it costing you

  85. to follow Christ? What is the cost to you? As

  86. I said, you're never going to but it's unlikely. You're

  87. never going to have to deal with violent oppression. But

  88. you deal with silent repression every single day in this culture.

  89. As America becomes more and more anti Christian and more

  90. and more secularized. Now, the Bible says what are we

  91. supposed to do? And it tells us six things you

  92. might write these days. Here's what you do when you

  93. handle opposition for your faith. Number One, don't be surprised.

  94. Don't be surprised. You should not expect the world to

  95. support your decision to follow Jesus. Why would you expect

  96. them to think that's, oh, that's a real popular thing

  97. to do. One Peter four to twelve says this, dear friends,

  98. don't be surprised. Don't be shocked when you go through

  99. painful trials that are like walking through fire, as though

  100. something unusual is happening to you. Jesus had told us.

  101. He said, in the world, you're going to have tribulation.

  102. It's going to happen. So don't be surprised. Number two,

  103. don't be afraid. So don't be afraid. Now, how do

  104. I get rid of the fear of opposition? How do

  105. I get rid of the fear of disapproval? How do

  106. I get afraid? How do I get rid of that

  107. fear of being reject You need to be filled with

  108. God's love. The more you realize how much God loves you,

  109. The Bible says there's no fear in love. Perfect love

  110. casts out all fear. You focus on God's love for you. You see,

  111. healthy people aren't afraid of rejection. Healthy people aren't afraid

  112. of disapproval. Healthy people don't need everybody's approval. Healthy people

  113. know their love by God. The Bible says in One

  114. Peter three sixteen thirteen to sixteen, if you suffer for

  115. doing what is right, you know, at work or at

  116. home and your family wherever, God will reward you for it.

  117. So don't be afraid and don't worry. Instead, worship Christ

  118. as Lord of your life. And if you are asked

  119. about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it

  120. and circle the word worry and the word worship. Those

  121. are the two alternatives you have when you feel put down,

  122. when you feel pressured to be quiet about your faith

  123. in Christ. Christ. You can either worry or you can worship.

  124. You can panic or you can pray. You can focus

  125. on the problem and the pressure and the persecution, or

  126. you can focus on God. He says, turn your attention

  127. away from the pressure you feel and turn it toward God.

  128. That's what worship is, focusing on God. The Bible tells

  129. us in the Bible that when Stephen, who was the

  130. first martyr, was stoned to death, it said he looked

  131. up into Heaven. He worshiped instead of worried. As they

  132. were throwing all those rocks at him that killed him.

  133. So don't be surprised, And he says, don't be afraid.

  134. Worship instead of worry. Number three, he says, don't be ashamed.

  135. Don't be ashamed. You should never be embarrassed for standing

  136. for the truth. Never be embarrassed for doing what's right.

  137. One Peter four sixteen says, it's no shame. You shouldn't

  138. be ashamed. It's no shame to suffer for being a Christian. Instead,

  139. thank God for the privilege of being called by his name. Question,

  140. is an insult gonna kill you? No is a put

  141. down gonna kill you. No is somebody calling you a

  142. name or labeling you something because you've made a stand

  143. for Christ and for what the Bible says. No is

  144. somebody some troll on the internet who's trying to bait

  145. you and get you in an argument. Is that gonna

  146. hurt you? No, it's not. It's not gonna kill you.

  147. So he says, don't be ashamed, don't be afraid, don't

  148. be surprised. Now, I want you to write this sentence down,

  149. and if you get this, it will liberate your life.

  150. I don't need other people's approval to be happy If

  151. you learn this, If this is all you get in

  152. today's message, it'll change your life because otherwise you are

  153. living your life for what other people think rather than

  154. what go God made you to be. And you can't

  155. be who God made you to be if you're worried

  156. about pleasing other people. I don't need others' approval to

  157. be happy. That person you've been trying to get their

  158. approval for so many years, like maybe it's a parent,

  159. They may have even died. If you haven't got it

  160. by now, I tell you this, you're not going to

  161. get it. But the good news is you don't need it.

  162. You don't need anybody's approval in order to be happy.

  163. You're as happy as you choose to be, and you

  164. focus on God rather than the people who disapprove. If

  165. I spent my life worrying about all the people who

  166. disapprove of me, I'd be in bed with deep, deep depression.

  167. But that's not what life's all about. I focus on God,

  168. and I focus on what he wants, not what other

  169. people think. Because I don't need and you don't need

  170. anybody's approval in order to be happy. Happiness is a

  171. choice now. The Bible says this in one Peter five,

  172. verse nine. Take a firm stand, Take a firm stand

  173. against Satan, and be strong in your faith. Remember that

  174. your Christian brothers and sisters all over the world are

  175. going through the same kind of suffering you are. So

  176. what's you saying there? He's saying, well, I don't need

  177. to be ashamed. First place, you're in good company. This

  178. has happened for two thousand years, and there are people

  179. who are suffering right now for being a believer in Christ.

  180. You're in good company. If you want to go read

  181. Hebrews eleven, which is God's Hall of fame. And in

  182. God's Hall of fame, he says, they were beaten, they

  183. were tortured, they were imprisoned, they were pushed down, they

  184. were ridiculed, they were maligned, they were laughed at, and

  185. on and on and on. I don't know how Satine

  186. clear than this. Don't let don't ever let anybody laugh

  187. you out of following Christ. Don't ever let anybody laugh

  188. you out of living for Christ. One Peter three seventeen.

  189. Remember it's better to suffer for doing God's will than

  190. to suffer for doing evil. And here's the point, No

  191. matter what you do in life, somebody's gonna not like it.

  192. There is nothing that you can do that everybody is

  193. going to like. Does that veral I agree with that.

  194. You can't make everybody like you. So there's nothing you

  195. can do that can make everybody like you. So you

  196. may as well do the things that God likes rather

  197. than the things that other people like, because they aren't

  198. going to matter an eternity. If you're gonna suffer, if

  199. you're gonna have people who oppose you, if you're gonna

  200. have people's disapproval, you may as well have the disapproval

  201. for doing the right thing rather than the wrong thing.

  202. That's just logic. Because somebody is going to disagree with

  203. you no matter what you do. You can't avoid disapproval.

  204. Now we come to the fourth step, and here this

  205. is important. Recognize the source of the opposition, and it's Satan,

  206. not other people. It's not coworkers, it's not some other

  207. political party, it's not some other nation, it's not some

  208. other religion, it's not some competitor. It's not some person

  209. who just doesn't like you. The real source of the

  210. pressure you feel to cave in to not have integrity,

  211. the pressure you feel to be quiet and then not

  212. stand up for what you know is the right thing.

  213. That pressure is not coming from other people, It's really

  214. coming from Satan. In Revelation chapter twelve, verse ten, Satan

  215. is called quote the accuser of the Christians. That's his job.

  216. His number one job is to put you down. I

  217. follow me on this. Satan hates God, obviously, and so

  218. he hates anything God has created. And what he hates

  219. most of all are God's children. And so Satan hates you.

  220. He doesn't just hate God. Satan hates you. You know

  221. you've heard that phrase. God loves you and has a

  222. good plan for your life. Well, Satan hates you and

  223. has a bad plan for your life, and so he

  224. hates you. Now follow me on this. Satan wants to

  225. hurt God, but he can't. He can't hurt God. But

  226. he does have access to you, and he can't hurt you.

  227. And the quickest way to hurt a parent is to

  228. hurt his kids. The quickest way to hurt a mom's

  229. heart hurt her children. Quickest way to hurt a dad

  230. has hurt his children. And so Satan can't get it God.

  231. So what does he wanted to do. He wants to

  232. get at you, he wants to hurt you, and there

  233. is an unseen spiritual battle going all around you. And

  234. this pressure to make your life miserable and to make

  235. you cave in and to keep you from doing the

  236. right thing. It's not coming from other people. Really, you

  237. got to look beyond that. They're just pawns, they're just tools.

  238. They're just weapons, and a lot of times they don't

  239. even know most of the time, and I even know

  240. they're being used. But the real issue is this spiritual warfare.

  241. Ephesian six twelve says this. We're not fighting against human beings,

  242. which is why you don't win this in the ballot box.

  243. We're not fighting against human beings, but against wicked spiritual

  244. forces in the heavenly realm. Now let me explain this.

  245. You need to understand that Satan knows it's stupid to

  246. attack Jesus Christ directly. Why because he was the only

  247. perfect person who ever lived. How do you attack Jesus,

  248. I mean, the savior who taught love and grace and

  249. peace and joy and forgive other people and died gave

  250. his life for others. How do you attack Jesus so

  251. he knows. Rather than attacking Jesus directly, he wants to

  252. attack those who follow him. And today he uses the media,

  253. and he uses music, and he uses comedies, and he's

  254. doing anything he can to ridicule those who follow Jesus.

  255. And they say, hey, they're out of date, they're on

  256. the wrong side of history. They don't know what they're

  257. talking about. No on and their fuddy dead is their bigots,

  258. and on and on and on. Here's what the Bible

  259. says you should do, two Timothy, to stay away from

  260. stupid and senseless arguments. I would add, especially on the Internet,

  261. these only lead to trouble. God's servants must never quarrel.

  262. Star that circle, it put a line on it, fifteen

  263. exclamation points. God's servants must never quarrel. I didn't say

  264. that God did. It's right there in the Bible. And

  265. so you should not get into heated arguments. God's servants

  266. should never quarrel. That's what the Bible says. Instead, when

  267. you're under a press, when you're in opposition, when people

  268. are harassing you for being a Christian, when they look

  269. at you strange for what you believe, Instead be kind

  270. to everyone, including the opposition. And be patient with the

  271. opposition and be humble when you correct people who oppose you.

  272. They've been trapped by the devil and he makes them

  273. obey him. But God may help them escape. Now what's

  274. he saying here, He's saying those people they're just pawns.

  275. And see, if you don't have the Holy Spirit in

  276. your life, you're not God's power in your life. You

  277. have no defense against Satan. He could just whipsaw you

  278. this way. Now, he can master your moods, he can

  279. lead you into depression, he can do all kinds. He

  280. can make you angry. You have no defense against Satan.

  281. Until you've got God's spirit inside you. You're not strong. Sorry,

  282. you're just not. And so these people, they're just being

  283. used as tools. And what you need to do is

  284. recognize a source and treat the opposition the way Jesus did.

  285. How did Jesus treat those who opposed him? Even on

  286. the cross, he's saying, Father, forgive them. They don't know

  287. what they're doing. They don't know what they're doing. That's

  288. what it means to be christ Like. They don't know

  289. what they're doing. These people who attack me, they don't

  290. know what they're doing. The people who attack you, they

  291. don't know what they're doing. The people who put down

  292. Jesus in Church and Christian they don't know what they're doing. Father,

  293. forgive them. Now. Think about this. Jesus was lied to,

  294. lied about constantly. If you go make a list of

  295. all things they lied about Jesus in the Bible. They

  296. said he's a revolutionary here to overthrow Rome and take

  297. Pilot's place. Wrong. But they use that to get him

  298. to the cross. They said, they said he he's got

  299. a demon.

  300. Wrong.

  301. At one point, they said he's a drunk and a glutton.

  302. Wrong.

  303. They said, you know, he's the devil incarnate. Wrong. And

  304. how did Jesus respond to all those lies that were

  305. told about him? Look at the next verse Firs. Peter two.

  306. When they hurled their insults at him, Jesus did not retaliate.

  307. When he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted

  308. himself to God, who judges justly. Look at this verse

  309. on the screen. I love this. In the message, it

  310. says this. They called him every name in the book,

  311. and he said nothing back. He suffered in silence, content

  312. to let God set things right. This leads us to

  313. the fifth thing you need to do when you're under attack,

  314. refuse to retaliate.

  315. Such a great message by Rick today and every day.

  316. I sure hope you were just as encouraged as I was.

  317. And now here's Rick with an important message.

  318. Hi, everybody, thanks so much for listening today. You know,

  319. my hope is that God uses this broadcast to help

  320. deepen your relationship with Jesus. Now, these daily Hope messages

  321. are distributed on radio stations and digital platforms all across

  322. the globe, and listeners are writing and letting us know

  323. that their lives are being changed. They're telling us that

  324. they're walking with Jesus and that guilt and fear has

  325. been chased from their lives by God's love. You know,

  326. relationships are being restored, and marriages are being healed, and

  327. many people are saying that they've found their life purpose.

  333. understand in times like these, many of you are unable

  335. because I never want anybody to give unless God leads

  336. them to give. That's between you and God, not between

  337. you and me, but between you and God. And your

  338. prayers are a continual and incredible contribution to this Daily

  339. Hope ministry. Now, if you do want to give a

  343. In other words, if you give twenty dollars, then that

  344. person's combined it with a grant to make your gift

  345. forty dollars. Now, if you've never given a gift to

  346. dailyhe I want you to pray about partnering with us

  347. so that together we can continue to share the hope
