  1. Hello, everybody.

  2. This is Pastor Rick's Daily Hope with Rick Warren. I'm

  3. really glad you're here.

  4. Today.

  5. We're continuing our series from Psalm twenty three called Living

  6. in the Goodness of God. It's all about how God's

  7. goodness meets you right where you are and brings hope

  8. even in difficult seasons. Okay, so let's jump in for

  9. part one of a message called living an Anointed Life.

  10. If you take out your message notes, we're going to

  11. continue in the series we've been in. Now it's a

  12. twelve part series, Living in the Goodness of God. We're

  13. looking at the most important or famous chapter in the Bible,

  14. Psalm twenty three, The Lord is My Shepherd. It's only

  15. six verses, but it's taking as twelve sessions to get

  16. through it because there's so many rich twelve different metaphors,

  17. twelve different pictures of the way God is good to us.

  18. And today we come to the fifth verse. So I'm

  19. twenty three verse five, and we're just looking at one

  20. phrase where he says, talking about the goodness of God,

  21. you anoint my head with oil. Now, what in the

  22. world does that mean? You anoint my head with oil?

  23. This was written three thousand years ago. How in the

  24. world could it possibly have any relevance to my life

  25. today and the goodness of God. Well, you've got to

  26. understand what anointing is. What does it mean to be anointed? Well,

  27. that depends on who's doing the anointing. If you had

  28. your next door neighbor come over to you tomorrow, to

  29. your house and walk in and they had some oil

  30. and they anointed you and they said, I now proclaim

  31. you the king of the universe, would that change your life? No?

  32. Why because they don't have any authority to do anything

  33. about it. They could say you're the king of rock

  34. and roll or whatever, and it wouldn't make any difference

  35. because it depends on who's doing the anointing. Now I'm

  36. putting down a definition here, and there's anointed by God,

  37. which is internal, and there's anointed by people, which is external.

  38. Explain this so we can unwrap it and see all

  39. the benefits to your life. Anointed by God is something

  40. that happens internally, and I've written here when God's Holy

  41. Spirit gives you insight or ability, this is a supernatural insight, ability,

  42. or stamina, or authority or protection that you don't normally

  43. have in order to do a job that he God

  44. has chosen you to do. That's anointing. When you are

  45. anointed by God, God gives you supernaturally ability that you

  46. don't have, or insight wisdom you don't have stamina to

  47. hold up under something, you don't have, authority or even

  48. protection that you don't normally have, in order to do

  49. a job that God has chosen you to do. That's

  50. called anointing in the Bible. Now, anointing by people is

  51. something different. It's an outward symbol of the inward thing

  52. we just talked about. It's the external symbol. And anointing

  53. by people means when somebody prayerfully applies some oil to

  54. your skin as an outward sign of what God is

  55. doing inside you. Now, God often does this. He gives

  56. us an external symbol of an internal process. The Lord's

  57. Supper communion is an external symbol of the death and

  58. crucifixion of Jesus Christ. This is my body and this

  59. is my blood, using you know, bread and wine, crackers

  60. and juice, using symbols that say this is an outward

  61. sign of an inward spiritual truth. Baptism is an outward

  62. sign of an inward truth. It says I have died

  63. to my old way of living. We put them under

  64. the water, we bring them back up, and I'm beginning

  65. a brand new life. It's a new life. I've been

  66. born again, not turn over a new leaf. I got

  67. a new life. All my sins have been forgiven, washed away.

  68. That's an outward symbol baptism of an inward commitment. Now,

  69. neither communion nor baptism save you. It's like I call

  70. them the wedding ring of the Christian life. This ring

  71. was given to me many years ago, forty two years specifically,

  72. when I said two words at a ceremony that changed

  73. my life. Two words I do. When I said those

  74. two words, I had no idea what I was doing

  75. when I said I do. And the rest of my

  76. life I'm working out the implications of two words I do.

  77. And Kay will often tell me this is in the

  78. fine print. If I do and I go, oh, that's

  79. included too. Yeah, Okay, I did, and I still do.

  80. She gave me this ring. Now I could lose this

  81. ring and I'd still be married. Kay would be upset,

  82. and I would actually too. But this doesn't make me married.

  83. It's just a symbol. When someone anoints you with oil.

  84. There's nothing mystical or magical properties in the oil. It's

  85. simply like the water in baptism is not a special

  86. kind of water. It's just water and an oil and

  87. anointing is just olive oil. But it is the symbol

  88. of something far more significant and the faith in the

  89. fact that God has anointed you on the inside. Now,

  90. in the Bible, olive oil specifically is used as a

  91. symbol of a lot of things. It's a symbol of

  92. God's spirit, the Holy Spirit. It's a symbol of God's presence.

  93. It's a symbol of God's blessing on your life. When

  94. someone is anointed with oil, it's a symbol that God

  95. approves of you. It's a symbol of God's presence, of

  96. God's protection, of God's promises. It's a symbol of prosperity.

  97. There are a lot of different meanings to being anointed

  98. with oil. It's comfort, it's healing, it's joy. The Bible

  99. talks about the oil of joy, the oil of gladness,

  100. the oil of salvation, the oil of deliverance, and so

  101. it's a symbol of many different things. Now in the Bible.

  102. In the Old Testament, the old part of the Bible,

  103. only three kinds of people got anointed with oil. You

  104. had to be a priest, you had to be a prophet,

  105. or you had to be king. And even today, kings

  106. are still anointed with oil, even thousands of years later,

  107. as a symbol of God's blessing, God approval, God's giving

  108. them authority and things like that. And the only people

  109. who could actually do it were the priest. Nobody else

  110. was allowed to anoint in the Old Testament. In fact,

  111. you weren't even allowed to have anointing oil in your home.

  112. It was supposed to be that sacred. But when Jesus

  113. Christ came and died on the cross, he broke up

  114. the old system, and the Bible says the veil in

  115. the temple was torn in half, which means you can

  116. go directly to God. Now you don't need a priest.

  117. In the Old Testament, you had to go through a

  118. priest to get to God. You had to pray through

  119. a priest. You had to have him confess your sins

  120. for you. You confess to the priest, they confessed to God.

  121. You don't have to go to a priest anymore. You

  122. don't have to confess to a priest. You can confess

  123. correctly to God. You don't have to pray through a

  124. priest anymore. You can pray directly to God. That's what

  125. Jesus did on the cross. In fact, the Bible says

  126. this may shock you. If you're a follower of Jesus,

  127. you're a priest. It says it over and over and over.

  128. It's called the priesthood of the believer. It'sattle we use

  129. the phrase every member is a minister. It's the same

  130. thing that you don't need somebody between you and God.

  131. You now, because of what Jesus did, have direct access

  132. and because you you may have never thought about this,

  133. or a priest, whether you're a man or a woman,

  134. old or young, if you're a follower of Christ, you

  135. have the authority to anoint people with oil. You have

  136. the authority to pray for people's healing. You have the

  137. authority to do all the things that the priest used

  138. to do in the Old Testament. Now to understand what

  139. it means to live an anointed life, and that's what

  140. we want to look at you. You anoint my head

  141. with oil. What is the meaning of that what is

  142. the blessing of being anointed by God? We need to

  143. go back to the very basic. You're not an accident.

  144. You were made by God and for God. Till you

  145. understand that, life won't make sense. We've talked about this

  146. many times. God has a plan for your life, a

  147. purpose for your life, and the significance and meaning of

  148. your life comes from figuring out God's plan on your life.

  149. God has a purpose, and the Bible says before you

  150. even born, God planned what he wanted to do with

  151. your life. It's called your calling, your calling. And the

  152. word in Latin is or a Greek is caleo means

  153. to call out and we get our vote, say in Latin,

  154. which is we get vocal vocalize voice. It is God

  155. calling you. Did you know that you're called by God

  156. to do something with your life. You may be called

  157. to be a marine biologist, but it's a calling. You

  158. may be called to be a taxi driver or a banker,

  159. or an investor, or a homemaker or a teacher or

  160. a nurse, or an artist or a musician. Everybody who's

  161. alive has a calling by God on their life. Now

  162. many people miss that calling and they go off and

  163. do their own thing, and that's why they're unhappy. That's

  164. why they're unsatisfied. That's why they're unfulfilled. Because you'll never

  165. be fulfilled doing your plan. You're only going to be

  166. fulfilled if you figure out what is God calling me

  167. to do. Some people think that God only calls missionaries

  168. and priests and you know, nuns and pastors and people

  169. who do church work. No, no, no, no, no. Everybody

  170. has a calling on their life. You could be called

  171. to be a businessman. You could be called to be

  172. a politician. You could be called to be a salesperson.

  173. And what God calls you to do? Listen, He wants

  174. to anoint you to do. Let me show you some verses. First,

  175. look up here on the screen. The Bible says this

  176. in the Book of Ephesians, that God made us what

  177. we are. He wired yous. You like sales, you like math,

  178. you like music, you like instrumentation, you like organizing. Your administrator,

  179. God made you what you are, and in Christ Jesus,

  180. God created us, each of us to do good works,

  181. which He planned in advance for us to live our

  182. lives doing. Do you realize that before you're even born,

  183. God planned the calling on your life. He planned the

  184. purpose on your life. Now that's very very important, and

  185. this is where fulfillment and meaning and purpose come from.

  186. But here's the catch. You cannot fulfill your calling the

  187. way God wants you to on your own power. You

  188. need what is called God's anointing. And anointing is the

  189. power and the insight and the energy and all those

  190. things that I mentioned earlier that allow you to do

  191. what God wants you to do. If God has a job,

  192. He's going to give you the ability to do it.

  193. And so what I want to do real quickly is

  194. summarize the entire Bible and what it has to say

  195. about anointing an anointed life in about six statements. Can

  196. you write fast? This is a cliff notes on the

  197. Bible on anointing, So take your notes down. This is

  198. very important because until you understand your calling and until

  199. you get your anointing, you're not going to be fulfilled

  200. in life. Okay, Number one, here are six things I've

  201. learned about God's anointing on my life. Number one, when

  202. God appoints me, he anoints me. That's the first thing

  203. we learn. When God appoints me, he anoints me. God

  204. never asked you to do something without providing what you

  205. need to do it. When he gives you assignment, he's

  206. going to give you the empowerment. When he gives you

  207. a plan, he's going to give you the power to

  208. do it. When he gives you a strategy, he's going

  209. to give you his spirit. God's anointing comes with God's

  210. appointing and the anointing that God wants to give you

  211. in your life. New power, new energy, new insight only

  212. happen when you start doing using it for what He

  213. wants to give it to you. For God has promised

  214. to help you out. If God calls you to do

  215. something and you're scared to death, you feel incompetent or

  216. incapable or inadequate, God says, that's okay. Look at these

  217. verses first, Thessalonians five twenty four. The one who calls you,

  218. that's God is faithful. God is faithful, and he will

  219. do it. What does that verse mean? Whatever God calls

  220. you to do, He's going to give you the ability

  221. to do. He's going to help you do it. He's

  222. going to put his spirit in you. And if God

  223. says to do it, you can count on his anointing. Faithful,

  224. the one who calls you, he's going to do it.

  225. A good example of this would be when God gave

  226. the very first assignment to his very first followers, the

  227. first twelve Disciples. Look up here on the screen Acts

  228. Chapter one, verse eight says this, you will receive power

  229. when the Holy Spirit comes on you. That's anointing, and

  230. you will be my witnesses to the ends of the earth.

  231. Now that when Jesus gave that assignment to disciples was

  232. an impossible assignment. There was no way they could possibly

  233. go to the end of the earth. There were no planes, trains, automobiles,

  234. no ocean bearing vessels. How now were they going to

  235. get to Australia from the Middle East. How are they

  236. going to get to South America or North America. It

  237. was physically impossible. God will often give you an assignment

  238. that physically looks impossible, but he says, I'm gonna make

  239. it possible, and We're going to figure out a way

  240. to do this, and I'm going to empower you. So

  241. God says, my appointment comes, or my assignment comes with

  242. an anointing that goes right along with it. Okay, Number two.

  243. Here's the second thing we learned. God's anointing makes me

  244. a better person. If you think you're good now, it's

  245. nothing compared to what you could be with God's anointing

  246. on your life. God's anointing transforms you. It changes you

  247. from the inside out. It gives you abilities you did

  248. not have on your own. Now again, there are many,

  249. many examples of this when somebody is anointed as a

  250. king or prophet or whatever that all of a sudden

  251. they got new abilities and their life was turned around

  252. and changed because of the anointing. Here's a good example.

  253. In First Samuel, chapter ten, Samuel is a prophet and

  254. the first king of Israel is a guy named Saul.

  255. Saul felt very inadequate. He thought I could never be

  256. a king, and in verse one, it is chapter ten,

  257. it says this. Then Samuel took oil and poured it

  258. on Saul's head, and he said, God has anointed you

  259. this outward symbol of an inward commitment. God has anointed

  260. you to be the leader of his people. Now Saul

  261. is annointed, but he still doesn't believe it. He's still insecure.

  262. And so Samuel goes, I'm going to give you several signs,

  263. and over the next several verses, says this is gonna happen,

  264. and this is gonna happen, and this is gonna happen.

  265. And then down in verse six he says, here's the

  266. thing that's going to confirm your calling. Verse six of

  267. Fir Samuel tin God's spirit will come on you in power,

  268. and you're going to speak like a prophet. He said,

  269. you're actually going to be walking with some prophets when

  270. this happened, So spiritual men, and he says you will

  271. be changed into a different person. Circle that you're going

  272. to be changed into a different person. And after this happens,

  273. you whatever you do, whatever you think is best, Do

  274. whatever you think is best, because God will be with you. Well,

  275. what is this first teaching us that when God actually

  276. anoints your life, when you receive God's anointing on your life,

  277. it changes you. You See, how does it change me? You're

  278. going to be more competent, You're going to be more confident,

  279. and you're going to be more calm. You're going to

  280. be more confident about what God's called you to do.

  281. You're going to be more competent about what God's called

  282. you to do, and you're going to be more calm

  283. about it. When you are worried, when you're nervous about

  284. your job, about your calling, about your vocation. Then guess what.

  285. You don't have the anointing of God on your life

  286. at that moment. You don't feel competent, you don't feel confident,

  287. and you don't feel calm. When God comes into your life,

  288. it changes you, and all of a sudden, you've got

  289. a whole lot more confidence about what you know you're

  290. supposed to do with your life. Okay. Number three. Third

  291. thing we learn in the Bible is that God's anointing

  292. makes difficult tasks easier. This is a good one. It

  293. makes the difficult tasks in your life easier because now

  294. you're not just doing it on your own power, You're

  295. doing it on God's power. And the difference between serving

  296. God and your power versus serving God and His power

  297. is night and day. Let me show you the difference

  298. between an anointed life and an unanointed life. Look up

  299. here on the screen. Ephesians chapter three, verse sixteen says

  300. this from his unlimited resources, God will give you mighty

  301. inner strength through his Holy Spirit circle mighty inner strength. Now,

  302. my resources are limited, my energy is limited, my knowledge

  303. is limited, my wisdom is limited, my talent is limited,

  304. and so is yours. But God is not. And when

  305. you have God's anoying on your life, he puts mighty

  306. strength in you that you didn't know you had. You

  307. can handle things better, you can last longer, you can

  308. go farther because you have God's annoying on your life.

  309. How do you know when you don't have God's annoying

  310. on your life. You're tired all the time. You're tired

  311. all the time. Why Because you're trying to solve your problems.

  312. You're trying to live your life. You're trying to fulfill

  313. your purpose on your own power. Now, he says, God

  314. will give you mighty strength through his Holy Spirit. One

  315. of the Holy Spirit's job is to anoint you. That's

  316. his job to give you the power and the energy

  317. and the wisdom and the resources and all the stuff

  318. you need to get it done, to get done what

  319. God puts you on this planet to get done. Philippians

  320. four thirteen is one of the moost famous verses in

  321. the Bible. You could probably quote it. I can do

  322. everything with the help of Christ. Who gives me the

  323. strength I need now. If you don't have, if you're

  324. not depending on Christ, you depending on yourself, and you're

  325. gonna end up fadig. Let me ask you a very

  326. personal question. Are you trying to do everything you need

  327. to do in life based on adrenaline or based on

  328. anointing HM? Because you're adrenaline runs out and you get tired,

  329. and you get fatigued, and you get worn out and

  330. you want to give up. When you're walking in the anointing,

  331. when God's powers going through, it's limitless. It is limitless.

  332. It gives you supernatural energy. I can do everything with

  333. the help of Christ. I wonder what you're filling in

  334. that blank. I can do everything with the help of

  335. my medication. I can do everything with the help of

  336. my team. I can do everything with the help of

  337. my bank, passport and my savings account. No, no, there's

  338. only one thing that doesn't run dry. Every other well

  339. in your life is gonna run dry. If you ask

  340. or expect other people to meet needs in your life

  341. that only God can meet, You're gonna be disappointed, They're

  342. gonna be frustrated, and you're gonna have conflict because nobody

  343. could possibly meet all the needs in your life. Your

  344. wife can't, your husband can't, your best friend can't, your

  345. boyfriend can't. Nobody can meet all your emotional, physical, spiritual needs.

  346. Only God can. And if you look to him, he says,

  347. then I will give you my anointing. I can do

  348. everything with the help of Christ, who gives me the

  349. strength I need. By the way, do you know what

  350. Christ means? That word Christ? Some people think Christ is

  351. Jesus last name, Jesus' first name, Christ's last name. No, no,

  352. do you even know? You may have been a Christian

  353. thirty years. Do you don't even know what Christ means.

  354. It's the Greek word for anointed one. That's what Christ

  355. means anointed one. It is the anointed one who gives

  356. you your anointing that gives you the power to do

  357. all the things God wants you to do with your life.

  358. Christ means anointed one. By the way, do you know

  359. what the word anointed one is in Hebrew, the other

  360. language in the Bible. It's the word Messiah. Messiah means

  361. anointed one. So Christ and Messiah are the exact same

  362. wordy just in Hebrew or in Greek and he says,

  363. it is the Messiah, It is the anointed one who's

  364. gonna give you the anointing to get done everything you

  365. need to get done in life that God wants you

  366. to do. Now, God doesn't give you his anointing to

  367. do things you want to do. He gives you the

  368. things He puts you on. He gives you the ability

  369. to do what He wants you to do. Okay, number four,

  370. and now let's review. When God appoints me. He anoints me.

  371. God's anointing makes me a better person, and it makes

  372. difficult tasks easier. Number four. God's anointing makes the impossible

  373. possible because God can do stuff you would never would

  374. be able to do, and now I would never be

  375. able to do. This is a big deal because in

  376. your business you're gonna come up against insurmountable problems. You're

  377. gonna need the anointing of God. When you're gonna have

  378. problems in your marriage that seem insurmountable. You're gonna have

  379. problems with your health that seem insurmountable. What do you

  380. depend on there? Not your own power, You depend on

  381. God's anointing. Look at these verses Luke eighteen twenty seven.

  382. Jesus says, what is impossible for men is possible with God.

  383. I can't do everything, but God can Ephesians three twenty

  384. God's power at work within us is able to accomplish

  385. infinitely more than we could ever dare to ask for

  386. or even imagine. Now. I don't know about you. I'm

  387. a pretty big dreamer. Nobody's ever accused me of being

  388. a small thinker or a small dreamer. And yet this

  389. verse says, God says to me, hey, Rick, think of

  390. the greatest thing I could do in your life. Just

  391. blow the top off. What are you afraid to even ask?

  392. What are you afraid to even imagine? What's the greatest

  393. thing you could imagine happening in your life? And God says,

  394. I can top that. I can top that. I'm better,

  395. I'm bigger. My annointing can do more than you even think.

  396. What's the greatest thing you'd like to see done in

  397. your life? You go, man, I'm even afraid even imagine.

  398. I'm afraid evening think of it. It would might be

  399. too over. Think of the biggest thing God could do

  400. in your life. And God says, with my anointing, I

  401. can do bigger than that. He says, God's power at

  402. work within us is able to accomplish infinitely more than

  403. we could ever dare to ask or even imagine, for

  404. our families, for your business, for your career, for your education,

  405. for your dream. God's annoying makes the impossible possible.

  406. Hey, thanks so much for listening to today's show. Rick

  407. wants to encourage you with a closing thought.

  408. God has five purposes for your life. He wants you

  409. to know and love him. That's called worship. He wants

  410. you to belong to his family that's called fellowship. He

  411. wants you to grow in him. That's called discipleship. He

  412. wants you to serve Him with your gifts and talents.

  413. That's your ministry. And he wants you to share the

  414. good news with other people. That's your mission. Now Today,

  415. as we close, I want to talk to you about

  416. the third purpose, discipleship or personal growth. How do we

  417. grow well? We grow through the nourishment of God's Word.

  418. It's how we get to know God. To know God's

  419. word is to know God's will. God's word is the

  420. source of God's will. And God's ultimate goal for your

  421. life is for you to become like Jesus Christ. To

  422. do that, you have to fill your life with the

  423. word of Jesus Christ. Two Timothy three seventeen says through

  424. the Word, we're put together and shaped for the tasks

  425. that God asked for us. I remember in the Old Testament,

  426. the Bible says that joe Zbe treasured God's Word more

  427. than his daily bread. That's how I want you to

  428. treat God's Word. That's how you grow in discipleship. Get

  429. into his word every day, study it, memorize it, and

  430. meditate on it. Apply it. Never take it for granted.

  431. God's word is as essential to your soul as food

  432. is to your body. So get into the Word today.

  433. God bless you.

  434. Be sure to join us next time as we look

  435. into God's Word for our daily hope. This program is

  436. sponsored by Pastor Rick's Daily Hope and your generous financial support.
