  1. Hello, everybody. This is Pastor Rick's Daily Hope with Rick Warren.

  2. I'm really glad you're here today. We're continuing our series

  3. from Psalm twenty three called Living in the Goodness of God.

  4. It's all about how God's goodness meets you right where

  5. you are and brings hope even in difficult seasons. Right now,

  6. here's the final part of a message called living an

  7. Anointed Life.

  8. Fifth thing that we learn in the scriptures is this

  9. that God anoints my life.

  10. To bless others.

  11. God blesses you, not just so you can feel good.

  12. God blesses you so you could be a blessing to

  13. other people. Now, we've done an entire series on this

  14. at Saddleback, where we talked about we're blessed to be

  15. a blessing. God doesn't give you money, talent, good looks, abilities, opportunities, networks.

  16. None of those things are giving to you simply for

  17. your benefit. God says, I want you to be a

  18. blessing to other people. Now you get blessed in the

  19. same time. There's no doubt about it. You're going to

  20. enjoy the blessing of being a channel. But when you're

  21. a channel of God's power and blessing to other people.

  22. It blesses everybody. You're not the only one who gets blessed.

  23. God doesn't give you his annoying just so you can

  24. feel good. God gives you his anoying to help others,

  25. and when you do, it helps you now. In Isaiah,

  26. Isaiah was a prophet in the Old Testament. In chapter

  27. sixty one, Isaiah says, I know I'm anointed by God.

  28. And he comes up with a list of six different

  29. kinds of people in pain, and he goes, I know

  30. this is what God's calling me to do. That I'm

  31. going to use my anoying just not to make a

  32. name for myself. God is giving me this anointing to

  33. help six kinds of people in pain. Let me read

  34. it to you. Isaiah says, the spirit of the Lord

  35. is on me, and he has anointed me. There's that phrase,

  36. you might circle it. He has anointed me to bring

  37. good news to the suffering and the afflicted.

  38. That's number one.

  39. Number two, he's anointed me to comfort the broken hearted.

  40. Number three, he's anointed me to announce freedom to.

  41. People who are captives.

  42. You know, they're in a prison, maybe a self imposed

  43. prison of resentment or an addiction, or a compulsion, or

  44. a fear or an anxiety. A lot of people are

  45. in self imposed prison. He says, He's anointed me to

  46. bring good news, the suffering, comfort to broken hearted, a

  47. lot of broken hearts. To announce freedom to people who

  48. are enslaved to an addiction or habit. He's annointed me

  49. to open the eyes of the blind. What's he talking

  50. about there? Help people see stuff that they've never seen before.

  51. Help them see God. Maybe they've never seen God in

  52. their life, they don't even know.

  53. See God at work.

  54. He sent me to tell those who mourn that the

  55. time of God's favor to them has come. And he

  56. says the number six. He says, he has anointed me

  57. to tell all who mourn, and everybody has.

  58. Losses in life, you're gonna have him.

  59. If you haven't already, you'll have major losses in your life,

  60. which means you're gonna mourn. He says, God sent me

  61. to use the annoying I've got to tell these people

  62. who are who've had a loss that God will give

  63. beauty for ashes, joy instead of mourning, and praise instead

  64. of heaviness. Those who are depressed. What an amazing God

  65. we have that. God is interested in your emotional needs.

  66. God is interested in your hurts, in your habits, in

  67. your hang ups. God is interested in all the stuff

  68. that pulls you down. He says, when you get annointed,

  69. God wants you to help other people in pain. And

  70. when you do that, God helps you in your pain.

  71. He helps you in your pain. By the way, this

  72. passage Isaiah sixty one is the text that Jesus read

  73. for his very first public sermon publicly recorded sermons. In

  74. Luke chapter four, Jesus goes back to his hometown of Nazareth.

  75. He picks up the scroll of the Old Testament. He

  76. opens to this passage Isaiah sixty one, and Jesus.

  77. Reads it and says, the spirit of the Lord.

  78. Is upon me because He's appointed me to preach good

  79. news to the suffering and the afflicted and the poor,

  80. and he sent me to comfort the broken hearted. And

  81. he reads this, he rolls the scroll up. He goes

  82. over and he sits down. Shortest sermon on record, certainly

  83. not one of mine.

  84. And he sits down.

  85. And he says, today this passage is fulfilled right in

  86. front of you. I am the answer, I'm the savior.

  87. I'm the guy who's come to comfort the afflicted and

  88. the broken hearted, and the people who are enslaved to habits,

  89. and the people who don't know how to get out

  90. of debt, and the people who are blind and can't

  91. see the way out of where they are, and all

  92. these different things. Jesus says, I'm it, I'm it, But

  93. he says, I'm anointed to do this. Let me show

  94. you on the screen Acts chapter ten. Here's another verse.

  95. God anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit's power.

  96. By the way, there's a trinity.

  97. In one sentence, father, Son, Holy Spirit, one sentence. God

  98. anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit's power, and he, Jesus,

  99. went around doing good. That's the purpose of anointing, to

  100. make the world a better place. When you get anointed,

  101. you start helping other people. You get blessed by it.

  102. But you're helping other people. And he went around doing

  103. good and healing people who were beaten down by the devil.

  104. And when you get anointed, guess what God's going to

  105. do that with you? Why? Yeah, you you you're a priest,

  106. you're anointed it. God wants to work in your life

  107. this same way. To go around doing good, healing people

  108. who've been beaten up by by the devil. Number six.

  109. The sixth thing we learned about anointing as I summarize

  110. all the Bible, is that for every new challenge, I

  111. need afresh anointing. For every new challenge, I need a

  112. fresh anointing. Anointing by the Holy Spirit in your life cannot.

  113. Be stored up.

  114. You can't go, oh yeah, I remember way back in

  115. like nineteen ninety two, I went to service and oh, man,

  116. I really felt close to God. I got a quiver

  117. in my liver and I even cried, and I like, ooh.

  118. It was like an emotional experience, and you go, you're

  119. still living on that thing.

  120. That doesn't work that way. You can't store it up.

  121. God's anointing, his blessing on your life is kind of

  122. like manna, that bread that God fed him in the

  123. wilderness for forty years. It only lasted a day and

  124. then it's spoiled. Because God wants you to depend on

  125. Him every day for his anointing, every day for his

  126. power in your life. The prayer is not to pray

  127. give us this day our monthly bread.

  128. No, it's daily.

  129. He gives you just enough for that day, and tomorrow

  130. you're gonna need a fresh annoying, And the day after

  131. that you're gonna need a fresh annoying, and the day

  132. after that you're gonna need some fresh oil.

  133. In your lamp.

  134. You're gonna need fresh And by the way, you can

  135. lose the anointing. We've all seen people who are greatly

  136. used by God and they are on fire and they're

  137. gifted and they're talented, and then two years later they're

  138. on the shelf doing nothing. How did in the world

  139. did they lose God's blessing on their life? How did

  140. they lose the anointing on their life? You canna lose

  141. it lots of ways by taking it for granted, by

  142. not depending on God, by not spending time alone with

  143. God every day. You can lose the anoying through pride,

  144. through greed. You can lose the annoying by refusing to

  145. forgive somebody you need to forgive. You can lose it

  146. from gossip. You can lose it from out of control anger.

  147. You can lose it from all kinds of different things

  148. that you let become a god in your life that

  149. you begin to idolize, and all of a sudden, that

  150. person or that thing, or that job or that money

  151. is more important than God, and you could lose God's

  152. blessing on your life. History is littered with people who

  153. had God's anointing and God's blessing and we're seeing success

  154. and results in their life, and then all of a sudden, bam,

  155. they're nothing because they took it too lightly and too loosely.

  156. For every new challenge, I need a fresh anointing. And

  157. that annoying that you had last year or ten years ago,

  158. or a youth camp, it's not any good for today.

  159. It doesn't do any It doesn't do you any good today.

  160. You need a fresh refilling. God wants to fill you

  161. with his power, with his love, with his spirit, with

  162. his grace. You know the problem is we all leak.

  163. He get filled, but you leak, and you can lose

  164. the passion and lose the power, and lose the grace,

  165. and lose your vision and lose your passion like a

  166. balloon that's been blown up for a birthday party and

  167. three days later it's losing it all and going flat

  168. over in the corner.

  169. And we leak.

  170. So you need a fresh filling of God's spirit on

  171. a regular basis. You cannot handle today's problems with yesterday's anointing,

  172. and you certainly can't handle the problems you're gonna have tomorrow.

  173. And next week and next year with yesterday's annoying.

  174. You got to stay in touch with God so that

  175. he's filling you constantly with his grace, with his love,

  176. with his p He said, well, how do I do that?

  177. How do I stay filled? How do I get afresh

  178. in morning?

  179. Well?

  180. Hoseiah chapter ten is one example. Verse twelve. Hoseah ten

  181. twelve says this, so new seeds of righteousness. That's a

  182. metaphor by the way for prayer, and you'll reap the

  183. fruit of my love and break up your old hardened ground.

  184. He's talking about if you're a farmer. You got some

  185. ground out there hadn't been plowed in years. It's gotten hard,

  186. it's gotten dry, it's gotten crusty, and maybe your heart

  187. has gotten cold and dry and crusty, and you don't

  188. feel the joy of the Lord anymore, and you don't

  189. feel close to God anymore, and your heart is hard

  190. toward other people, and your heart is hard even maybe

  191. toward God. He says, you need to do a little plowing.

  192. You need to do a little spade work, break up

  193. the hardened, the fallow ground, the hardened ground in your life.

  194. It's time to turn to me and seek the Lord.

  195. And then he says, I'll come and I'll shower new blessings.

  196. That's anoying, I'll shower new blessings on you. How does

  197. God turn hard ground into soft ground so something can

  198. sprout fro him? He sends a storm. You got any

  199. storm going on in your life? God may breaking up

  200. the dirt clods in your heart, the hardened soil that's

  201. gotten dry and bearing and can't bear a fruit of anything.

  202. And in that passage he says four things. He says,

  203. you want you want my annoying because you gotta pray

  204. so so the seeds of right to spend some time

  205. talking to God. And he says, you need to break

  206. up the hardened ground. That's that's humility and confession to God.

  207. I haven't been close to you. I haven't been connected

  208. to you like I used to be. He says, turn

  209. back to God. That's clear. He says, seek God. That's clear.

  210. And he says, as a result, I'll come and shower

  211. new blessing, new anointing on your life.

  212. How do you.

  213. Get God's anointing back in your life or maybe for

  214. the very first time? The number one way you get

  215. it Listen, you ask, you ask. The Bible says you

  216. have not. Because you ask not, you do not have

  217. James four two.

  218. You do not have because you don't ask God.

  219. If you don't have God's power in your life, if

  220. you don't have God's blessing and anointing in your life,

  221. you're not waiting on God.

  222. He's waiting on you. You just haven't asked.

  223. When was your last time you asked God to make

  224. your career successful and then you said, I'll do it

  225. anyway you tell me to do it. When was the

  226. last time you asked God to make your marriage, or

  227. your relationships or your friendship successful? And then you said, God,

  228. I'll do it anyway you tell me to do it,

  229. even if it doesn't make sense. When was the last

  230. time you said, God, my finances are so messed up

  231. and I need you to bless my finances, and I'm

  232. willing to do the way.

  233. You tell me to do it.

  234. That is to break up the clauds and to say God,

  235. you have not because you're asked. I'm asking you right now.

  236. You see, God wants to bless your life in ways

  237. you have not even imagined. If God were to show

  238. you what he could have done with your life to

  239. this point that hadn't been able to you'd be sad.

  240. But if God were to show you what he could

  241. do with the rest of your life, however many years

  242. you got left, would blow your mind. If you just say, God,

  243. I'm asking for your anointing, I want you to I

  244. want to do it your way. We're not waiting on

  245. God for a revival of our hearts. He's waiting on us.

  246. Saw eighty four, Verse eleven says this look up here

  247. on the screen. The Lord generously gives. By the way,

  248. God is the most generous person in the universe, and

  249. he teaches us to get because he's generous. The Lord

  250. generously gives us his favor. Favor is another word for anointing.

  251. It means his blessing, his favor, his grace is anointing.

  252. The Lord generously gives us his favor. When you have

  253. the favor of God, you're a favorite. God says, She's

  254. my favorite. Have you ever felt that? Have you ever

  255. felt the favor of God in your life. I have,

  256. and there's nothing compared to it. When you know God

  257. has shown favor on you, and you go, I'm a

  258. favorite of God. I'm a friend of God. I don't

  259. deserve it, but it's just God's grace, he says. The

  260. Lord generously gives us his favor and honor. God wants

  261. to affirm you. God wants to applaud you in front

  262. of other people.

  263. Favor and honor.

  264. No good thing will he withhold from those who live right.

  265. He said, there's nothing that's good for you that I'll

  266. hold back. Anything you could possibly think of that would

  267. be good for you. I'm gonna give it. It's all there,

  268. it's all yours. I looked up that word all. It

  269. means all.

  270. No good thing will God hold back from you if

  271. you will just trust Him and live in his anointing.

  272. Now, am I write this down that when God anoints

  273. your business, it brings success. When God anoints your business,

  274. it brings success. I could give you one hundred examples

  275. out of the Bible of this. Let me just give

  276. you one. Genesis thirty nine, verse two talks about Joseph,

  277. who was a businessman and it says because the Lord

  278. was with Joseph. That phrase was with Joseph. He is

  279. under the anointing and blessing of God. It says, he

  280. was greatly blessed so that everything he did succeeded. You

  281. might underline that everything he did succeeded. Now, let me

  282. ask you how many of you would like that to

  283. be true in your career, that every single thing you

  284. did succeeded. Can I see your hands? Okay, oh, some

  285. of you don't want that. Let me try that again.

  286. How many of you would like to be known that

  287. everything you did in life succeeded. Yeah, that ought to

  288. be unanimous. And where does that come from? It comes

  289. from the anointing of God. Let me close in just

  290. the last two minutes about the second area, and that's

  291. your body.

  292. You might write this down.

  293. When God anoints your body, it brings health. It brings

  294. health in your body over and over again. Anointing for

  295. healing is one of the most common practices in the

  296. entire Bible. Not only did Jesus do it everywhere he went,

  297. he modeled.

  298. It for us.

  299. He authorized his followers to do the same. To anoint

  300. with oil as a symbol of God's anointing and to

  301. pray the prayer of faith for people who are sick.

  302. Jesus did it.

  303. The Bible tells us Jesus went into every village in town, preaching, teaching,

  304. and healing. One third of his ministry was healthcare, helping people.

  305. He cares not just about your soul going to heaven.

  306. He cares about your mind, education, and he cares about

  307. your body, your health. And Jesus, as I said, not

  308. only modeled anointing with oil as a symbol of God's blessing,

  309. but he actually taught the disciples and commanded us to

  310. do so. Also, look here on the screen. The Bible

  311. says in Mark six thirteen that his followers, the Disciples,

  312. anointed with oil those who were sick.

  313. And people were healed.

  314. Now I need to explain to you very quickly, there

  315. are three kinds of healing, three kinds of zuscum me,

  316. three kinds of illnesses. Now, there are a lot of

  317. illness in the world that sip because we make bad choices.

  318. If I eat wrong, I don't exercise, I don't take

  319. care of my body, I'm going to reap what I

  320. saw if I get sick. I have too much sugar

  321. and I get diabetes or whatever. That's my fault. And

  322. a lot of the illnesses we bring on ourselves from

  323. not enough rest, too much stress, not eating right exercise.

  324. Things like that.

  325. But the Bible talks about three kinds of illnesses. The

  326. first is for learning. God allows illness to teach us

  327. things that we would never learn any other way. And

  328. so some illness actually is allowed in our lives by

  329. God when God wants to teach us something. And one

  330. of the MANI verses on this is Psalm one, nineteen

  331. verse seventy one. So I'm one nineteen verse seventy one

  332. here on the screen says this, it was good for

  333. me to be afflicted so I could learn your truth. Okay,

  334. here's the true confession time. How many of you have

  335. learned some things in life through pain? Can I see

  336. your hands? Yeah, that's one hundred percent of us. In fact,

  337. some things we only learn through pain. And David, who

  338. wrote The Lord as My Shepherd, said it was good

  339. for me to be afflicted that I might learn your statutes.

  340. I've learned a lot of things through illnesses in my life.

  341. So sometimes God allows the illness for learning. Okay, The

  342. second way, a reason or for illness is actually for death.

  343. You say, well, that's not a very positive one. Well,

  344. here's what I'm saying. If every illness you had was healed,

  345. you'd never go to heaven, and neither would anybody else.

  346. So there is a sickness unto death, and the purpose

  347. is to end your life here so you can go

  348. on to the real life in the ever after. You

  349. will only get the sickness under death.

  350. One time in your life. Does that make sense?

  351. Okay, You're not going to get it over and over

  352. and over, the sickness on if you get well, it

  353. wasn't the sickness under death, okay, But there is an

  354. illness that everyone us get, Otherwise we'd.

  355. All stay on earth.

  356. Thank God, I don't have to stay on earth for eternity,

  357. where there's suffering, sorrow, sickness, sadness, stress, rape, wars, violence,

  358. racial prejudice, you know, all of the different isms in

  359. the world that put people down.

  360. Thank God, we do not stay here.

  361. So there is a sickness under death when God says

  362. it's time for you to come be with me. And

  363. then there's a third kind sickness for learning, sickness for

  364. death and sickness for bringing glory to God. Bringing glory

  365. to God. Jesus talked about this third kind of illness

  366. or sickness in John, chapter eleven, he says, and in

  367. verse four John eleven four, Jesus says this. They brought

  368. a sick man to Jesus, and he said, now the

  369. purpose of his illness is not for death. That's the

  370. second kind sickness under death. Instead, the purpose of this

  371. illness is so that God will receive glory from this situation.

  372. You say, how in the world can God get glory

  373. from my sickness, from my illness, Well, there's two different ways.

  374. One is you get healed and.

  375. There's a miracle and there's a testimony of God's healing power.

  376. The other way God can get glory is you're not healed,

  377. but you, with strong moral character and commitment and faith,

  378. stay true to Christ in spite.

  379. Of all your pain.

  380. If you know anything about Christian history, the greatest saints

  381. of all times were the ones who endured basically.

  382. Chronic pain throughout their entire lives.

  383. It shaped their character in such a way that they

  384. were far deeper than the shallow people who never had

  385. much pain in their life. So God can get glory

  386. in your illness either way through a miraculous healing. And

  387. who cares if he does it through medicine or a miracle.

  388. I don't care.

  389. They're both healings of God. And the other way is

  390. if you're not healed, but you stay true to God

  391. and you let that suffering and deepen, You build your character,

  392. grow your soul, develop your dependence on God. Become a

  393. woman of depth, become a man of character that brings

  394. glory to God too. Now we know that when we

  395. pray for people, not everybody gets healed. Not everybody I've

  396. prayed for gets healed. Why I don't know. When I

  397. get to heaven, we'll know. That's in God's book. We

  398. know that God determines when people get healed, He determines

  399. how people get healed, and he determines where people gets there.

  400. His job is to figure out the wind, where and how,

  401. And God has all of eternity.

  402. To answer his promises.

  403. But my job and your job is to do what

  404. He commanded us to do and over and over. In scripture,

  405. we're commanded to pray for each other, and we're commanded

  406. to pray for each other's healings, and the Bible tells

  407. us in James chapter five, verse fourteen to sixteen, that

  408. we are to pray for each other and anoint each

  409. other with oil as a symbol of God's anointing. James

  410. five fourteen says this, if you're sick. If you're sick,

  411. ask your church leaders to pray for your Literally, elders,

  412. ask your church leaders to pray for you and anoint

  413. you with oil in the name of the Lord. Now

  414. there's nothing magical or mystical about the oil. There's nothing supernatural,

  415. nothing properties that make it.

  416. It's just oil.

  417. It's olive oil. But it is the faith anoint with

  418. oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer

  419. that is offered in faith will bring healing. Notice not

  420. the oil, but the prayer and faith will bring healing.

  421. And the Lord will restore your health, he says, And

  422. pray for each other so that you will be healed.

  423. The prayer of a godly person is powerful and effective.

  424. Heavenly Father, it's amazing that many people will be within

  425. inches of a miracle and will walk away from it

  426. out of fear. And I pray nobody will leave here

  427. missing out on it. An opportunity to receive your anointing,

  428. your blessing, your power, whether it's in their business or

  429. in their body, whether it's in their family or their finances.

  430. Wherever they need, you know what that needs is.

  431. And you are healing God, whether physical, relational, financial, mental, emotional,

  432. or any other area. You've brought us to this moment.

  433. The question is will we trust you to do what

  434. you told us to do.

  435. Lord. It's all in your hands.

  436. We're just going to do what you tell us to

  437. do as an evidence of trust. And I ask your

  438. blessing on every person in the name of the Father

  439. and the Son and the Holy Spirit. And everybody said, Amen,

  440. God bless everybody.
