The Flood of Judgment.

In Genesis 1 through 11, there are four major events of ancient mankind that are recorded for us.

Creation, the Fall, the Flood, and then the Tower of Babel.

Well, today we're beginning to look at the flood account,

which skeptics scoff at.

I may even get some mail this week from people who say,

I cannot believe you believe in a literal worldwide flood.

Well, I do.

The way I see it, once you get past Genesis 1,

verse number one, in the beginning,

God created the heavens and the earth.

Once you get past that,

you shouldn't really have any problems

believing any other miracles in Scripture.

You see, I take the Word of God by faith.

because it's never, not once, failed me,

and because it's never, not once, been disproven,

although the world has certainly tried.

Anthropologists will tell you that the flood never happened

because virtually every civilization in the world

has a record of a great flood,

but that the details don't match up.

Well, that's actually one of the greatest arguments for a flood.

I mean, when Noah and his family got off the ark, what do you think's the one story they told their kids and grandkids for generation to generation?

The earth was flooded and we got saved by a boat, right?

Now, the details, they did change for various people groups, much like the game of telephone.

Where it gets passed on, the details change.

But the repeating theme from all these civilizations is that there was a catastrophic flood that wiped everyone out.

Everyone but one family who is saved by both.

Now, thankfully, the Holy Spirit preserved the true story for us in his word.

I can remember one of my professors in college, a missionary to India,

who happened to also be a Ph.D. in anthropology,

sharing with our class how the Chinese people claim to be descendants of Noah.

Sounds like a whole lot like Noah to me.

He also pointed out that the Chinese word for boat is a combination of three symbols.

Vessel.

The number eight and people.

Well, the Bible says that eight people were saved on the vessel called the ark.

And we could go on, but instead, let's get into our text.

The context is that the world had grown so evil and so corrupt that God said that he was going to destroy it.

Verse number eight.

But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.

This is the genealogy of Noah.

Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations.

Noah walked with God.

And Noah begot three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Here's our first principle.

God's grace is actually an invitation for us to walk with Him.

Okay.

It says that Noah found grace.

Noah didn't earn grace, he found it.

You see, Noah was a sinner just like the rest of us.

Yes, certainly he was a just and righteous man

as the text indicates for his generation,

but we know he wasn't perfect

in the way we understand perfection

because as soon as he got off the ark,

he got drunk, he got wasted.

So we know his righteousness didn't come from his own doing.

In fact, Hebrews chapter 11 says that Noah built the ark by faith

and that he became an heir of righteousness by faith.

You see, Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord,

and he found it the same way any of us find it, by faith.

And then God's grace in his life so transformed his life

that it says that Noah walked with God.

Just like his great-grandpa Enoch had walked with God, Noah walked with God.

You know, I hope and I pray that at the end of my life,

the totality of my life could be summed up as Andrew walked with God.

Now, what does it mean to walk with God?

Well, it means you're heading in the same direction as he is.

It means that you're in relationship and conversation with him,

and it means that you go wherever he leads you.

Now, if you're like Noah and you have found grace in God's eyes through Jesus Christ,

that is God's invitation to you to walk with him.

And there's nothing like walking with God.

Verse number 11, it says, the earth also was corrupt before God and the earth was filled with violence.

So God looked upon the earth and indeed it was corrupt for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.

And God said to Noah, the end of all flesh has come before me for the earth is filled with violence through them.

And behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

The word corrupt here is used three times

in verse number 11 alone.

God is saying that it is corrupt.

The word means to bring to ruin or destruction.

So what God really is saying is I'm gonna destroy

that which has already been destroyed by sin.

And notice it says that all flesh had corrupted their way.

So who corrupted mankind?

We corrupted ourselves.

We are to blame.

So here's the principle.

Any judgment that mankind receives from God is justified.

Sometimes people will ask, well, how can a loving God judge people for their sin to the point that they die?

Why?

The more complex question the Bible addresses is how can a holy and a just God possibly

forgive people of their sin?

So if you ever struggle with the justice of God and you're wondering if His judgment perhaps

is too harsh, just know it's never too harsh.

God is good and He always does that which is right.

We can take comfort in that, which means He never judges more harshly than what's deserved.

Now, verse number 14, we're introduced to the ark that Noah is instructed to build.

And we know from 1 Peter chapter 3 that the ark is actually a picture of Jesus.

So I want you to just keep that in your mind as we go through the text this morning, because we're going to come back to that.

Now, in verse number 14, through the end of the chapter, we have a lot of repetitions,

a lot of verses we're going to cover today.

The story just keeps repeating itself, and each repetition gives us just a little more

detail about the story.

But if you're not careful, you can get lost in all of the repetition, because we're not

used to it.

In our day, we're more linear with our storytelling.

So you've got to really pay attention.

In verse number 14...

God says, make yourself an ark of gopher wood.

Make rooms in the ark, literally nests or compartments,

and cover it inside and outside with pitch.

That's to keep the water out.

And this is how you shall make it.

The length of the ark shall be 300 cubits.

Now, a cubit is the distance between the end of your elbow to the end of your finger,

about 18 inches long.

Its width, 50 cubits, and its height, 30 cubits.

So it's about 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high.

This is a massive boat.

And then he says, you shall make a window for the ark

and you shall finish it to a cubit from above

and set the door of the ark in its side.

You shall make it with lower, second and third decks.

So the boat is three stories tall.

So we see here that Noah is told by God, build an ark.

And then God tells him how to do it.

He tells what it's supposed to be made of,

its size, its dimensions,

what it's supposed to be sealed with.

Now, there's a couple of things that jump out to me about the construction of the ark.

Now, I might be reading a little too much in here, but I find it interesting.

The first is that it was to be covered and sealed with pitch so that the waters of God's judgment wouldn't destroy Noah and his family.

Now, this is the same Hebrew word that's used throughout the Old Testament for atonement.

Now, what does the blood atonement do?

The blood of Jesus, his atonement do?

It covers our sin with his righteousness to keep God's judgment from us.

Now, God also tells Noah here to put a door

into the side of the ark.

So we see there's only one way into the ark.

There's only one way into the boat of salvation

through the door.

Well, Jesus said what?

He said, I am the door.

If anyone enters by me,

He will be saved.

Now, there's a lot of other details here that are given.

I think the details together are an example of how God often gives us detailed instructions in life, doesn't he?

Sometimes a lot of detail in his word for us.

You see, sometimes I think that people are tempted to think that God only cares about the big issues of life.

But God actually cares about all.

the issues of life.

Jesus said,

he who is faithful with little

will be faithful with much.

Verse 17.

God says,

and behold,

I myself am bringing floodwaters on the earth

to destroy from heaven all flesh

in which is the breath of life.

Everything that is on the earth shall die.

But I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall go into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you.

And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every sort into the ark to keep them alive with you.

They shall be male and female.

Of the birds after their kind, of animals after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after its kind,

two of every kind will come to you and keep them alive.

Amen.

And you shall take for yourself of all food that is eaten,

and you shall gather it to yourself, and it shall be food for you and for them."

So this is the first time that God tells Noah how he's going to destroy the earth.

He says by flood waters.

Now, everything that has the breath of life, meaning all land animals,

all human beings are going to be destroyed.

But then God says, but I will make my covenant with you.

Now that's the first time the word covenant

is used in scripture and covenant means promise.

God's promising Noah and his family and the animal kingdom

that he is not going to destroy them.

Here's our principle.

The only way that we come to God is on his terms.

It's on his terms.

Noah was not saved because he was so smart.

Noah wasn't saved because he struck up a deal with God.

Noah was saved because God chose to make a covenant with him to be saved.

And he told him detailed instructions.

He said, build an ark and then go into it.

Sometimes people will say, well, I think you get to God this way.

No, I think we get to God this way or that way.

No, we only get to God his way.

We come on his terms.

He's God.

We're not.

Now, we see here that Noah is told to bring a male and a female of each kind of animal,

obviously for the purpose of repopulating the earth once the flood is over.

Now, the question becomes, how in the world did Noah get all these animals on the ark?

Well, I think the first thing I would point out is that God says,

bring two of every kind of animal, not species as we know it today.

Kind is a much more general term,

probably referring to the reproductive boundaries within animals.

So instead, I think of a ring of a coyote and a wolf and a jackal and a dog.

Perhaps they just loaded up two within the canine family and microevolution took effect from there.

Also, I assume these animals were chosen specifically for maximum reproduction once the flood was over.

So I think they were probably juveniles.

Which makes a big difference.

Because for example, the largest dinosaur egg that we have

is just a little bit bigger than a football.

So bringing juveniles certainly would have made sense.

Now remember the ark is massive.

It had the capacity of 569 railroad boxcars.

So I don't have any doubt that God designed the ark

big enough to put all the animals he wanted on the ark.

Verse 22.

It says,

It says,

A male and his female.

Two of each animals that are unclean.

A male and his female.

Also 70 each of the birds of the air, male and female, to keep the species.

I think it's a bad translation.

It literally means seed or offspring to keep them alive on the face of the earth.

For after seven more days, I will cause it to rain on the earth 40 days and 40 nights.

And I will destroy from the face of the earth all living things that I've made.

And Noah did according to all that the Lord commanded him.

Now, there's two things, two times in the passage that we just read that it says,

And Noah did all that God commanded him.

Noah did all that the Lord commanded him.

Now, this word all is an important word, a small word, very important word.

Let me ask you, do you do all that the Lord commands you?

Or do you sort of pick and choose which commandments of God that you're going to obey?

You see, God expects us as his children to do all that he commands us.

Now, that doesn't mean that we're perfect.

Certainly doesn't mean that.

But it does mean that we make a decision to go all in on following Jesus,

to make him our Savior and our Lord.

Some people say, well, I believe,

and yet their life remains unchanged by the grace of God.

Listen, if that's the case, that's a counterfeit faith.

Here's our principle.

Obedience is actually the byproduct of genuine faith.

Hebrews chapter 11, verse number 7,

Hebrews 11 · chapter mention

By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen,

moved with godly fear, prepared or built an ark for the saving of his household.

It says, By faith Noah built the ark.

And what incredible faith it was.

I mean, some believe that prior to the flood,

the ecosystem was so different

that it had never rained before.

And they get that from Genesis 2, verse number six,

where it says,

and a mist came up from the ground to water the garden.

Now, I'm not sure if it had rained at this point or not.

I don't think that's crystal clear.

But one thing is clear.

It had never rained to the point where it had flooded the earth.

That's clear.

It had never rained to that point.

He was warned, Hebrews says, of things not yet seen.

No one had seen it, a flood like this.

And so Noah built the ark.

based on the Word of God, didn't he?

He didn't base it on science, certainly.

He didn't base it on his personal experience.

He based it on the Word of God.

And did you know that saving faith

is always based on the Word of God?

It's always rooted in the Word of God.

The Bible says that faith comes from hearing,

hearing by the Word of God.

Now, many believe that Noah actually took him,

perhaps over a hundred years

to build this massive ark.

The New Testament says that Noah

was a preacher of righteousness.

For over 100 years, Noah is preaching and building.

He's preaching and building, warning people,

pleading with them to believe and repent,

and the whole time, I'm sure he is ridiculed for his faith,

ridiculed for building this massive boat on dry land.

which has led me to wonder if Noah got discouraged

along the way.

And my assumption is that he did

because Noah was a sinner saved by grace,

just like the rest of us as Christians.

So he was susceptible certainly to discouragement

like we are from time to time.

So here Noah is, he's believing God.

He's working so hard to build the ark, he's preaching,

but no one outside of his family believes

a word he has to say.

I mean, the results just simply aren't there.

In spite of his discouragement that likely he faced, he just kept building.

He just kept preaching for a hundred years.

He just kept obeying God.

Now, how did he do that?

By faith.

That's the only way he possibly would have done it, by believing what God had told him.

I've run across far too many Christians who said, you know, God really convicted me about something.

Maybe it was to attend church consistently.

Maybe it was to become faithfully a part of a life group.

Maybe it was to start reading your Bible every day or start giving or to start serving or to start sharing Christ with other people.

And they start out maybe strong.

For a few days.

Maybe three days.

Maybe three weeks.

Maybe three months.

Maybe three years.

But at some point, discouragement sets in.

And they quit on what God had so clearly told them to do.

Listen, obedience is the byproduct of faith.

Do you really believe God?

Do you really trust him to see you through

to the other side of that discouragement

that you're in in life right now?

Do you believe him to see you through to the other side?

Do you love him to obey all that he has commanded you?

Verse number six of chapter seven.

It says, Noah was 600 years old

when the flood waters were on the earth.

Now we know that life expectancy for humanity

dropped rapidly after the flood.

So Noah with his sons, his wife, and his son's wives went into the ark because of the waters of the flood.

Of clean animals, of animals that are unclean, of birds, and of everything that creeps on the earth,

two by two they went into the ark to Noah, male and female, as God had commanded Noah.

And it came to pass after seven days that the waters of the flood were on the earth.

In the 600th year of Noah's life, in the second month, in the 17th day of the month,

on that day, all the fountains of the great deep were broken up and the windows of heaven were open

and the rain was on the earth 40 days and 40 nights.

So we see here that it takes about seven days

to get for Noah to get all the animals on the ark.

Now that must've been quite a chore.

But we know he had help from the Lord

because we read earlier in chapter six,

where God said the animals will come to you.

So the animals show up to Noah at the ark,

but Noah still has to get them on board.

And on the seventh day of loading, the flood began.

Now there's two sources of water.

The fountains of the great deep were broken up and the windows of heaven were opened.

So the water came from above and it came from below.

Now, many people believe that the canopy of water referenced in.

Genesis chapter one, verse number six,

encircled the globe prior to the flood.

It created perhaps a better environment for life,

but in the flood,

God dumped that canopy of water out for 40 days and 40 nights.

We also know that

The flood and the waters came from the breaking up of the deep.

Many believe this is a reference to God breaking apart the tectonic plates on the earth,

shifting them in such a way that the water from underneath the earth's surface spewed out.

Now, some think this is when the theory of Pangea happened,

not over millions of years, but over almost a year's period of time.

Now, later in the chapter, it says that the water went up

over 20 feet above the highest mountain, 15 cubits.

Most or many scientists will tell you

there's just not enough water on earth

to do that, although some scientists,

and we've discovered large, massive ocean miles

under the earth that's three times the size

of all the ocean water in existence today.

But some still say, hey, there's not enough water.

Well, there's a couple different ways

or theories that this happened.

Either it's under the earth, as we know it,

which I assume much of it is,

or God simply removed that excess water from earth.

He could certainly do that.

Or another theory is that prior to the flood,

the earth was much more flat.

And as God moved and shifted the tectonic plates,

allowing the flood,

he then moved and shifted them more,

allowing the water to recede.

And that process probably involved great earthquakes,

volcanoes, the topography was completely changed

as the mountains were shoved up

and the oceans were carved out.

You can go right over by Hart Park

to what is called Shark Tooth Mountain,

and you can find shark teeth.

You can find all other ocean fossils.

How in the world could that be?

Well, obviously this all used to be underwater.

All geologists agree with that.

Because tectonic plates, they're still shifting even today ever so slightly.

The question becomes, did God in the flood move them more forcefully and rapidly?

Psalm chapter 104, you read that later if you want,

Psalms 104 · chapter mention

seems to indicate that's what happened.

Verse number 13.

On the very same day, Noah and Noah's sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and Noah's wife and three wives of his sons with them entered the ark.

They and every beast after its kind, all cattle after their kind, every creeping thing that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind, every bird of every sort."

And they went into the ark to Noah, two by two, of all flesh, in which is the breath of life.

So those that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in as God had commanded him, and the Lord shut him in.

Now remember, Noah's been preaching for over a hundred years.

Repent and believe, or else death and destruction.

And the door of the ark has been open for a week.

For seven days as they gather all the animals into the boat,

but no one outside of Noah and his family joined them on the ark.

No one believes God's warning.

So on the seventh day, the Lord himself shuts the door to the ark.

And at that point, God's patience had come to an end.

Verse 17 says,

It says, now the flood was on the earth 40 days.

The waters increased and lifted up the ark, and it rose high above the earth.

The waters prevailed and greatly increased on the earth, and the ark moved, which is an understatement.

It means it surged, I think indicating there was turbulence.

It moved about on the surface of the waters.

And the waters prevailed exceedingly on the earth,

and all the high hills under the whole heaven were covered.

The waters prevailed 15 cubits upward, and the mountains were covered.

And all flesh died that moved on the earth,

birds and cattle and beasts and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth,

and every man, all in whose nostrils were the breath of the Spirit of life,

all that was on dry land died.

So he destroyed all living things which were on the face of the ground,

both man and cattle, creeping thing and bird of the air.

They were destroyed from the earth.

Only Noah and those who were with him in the ark remained alive.

And the waters prevailed on the earth 150 days, five months.

So it comes to downpour for 40 days and 40 nights,

but the water actually kept rising for 150 days,

it indicates.

Everything's covered with water at this point.

Everything dies.

It's judgment.

But verse 23 says,

"'Only Noah and those who were with him in the ark

"'remained alive.'"

You see, the ark,

And the ark alone was the means of God's salvation.

Only those who were in the ark were saved.

You know what?

That reminds me a lot of Jesus.

Only those in Jesus,

only those who placed their faith in Jesus are saved.

Now I love how God initially told Noah,

he commanded him, go into the ark.

But in chapter seven, verse number one,

when the flood was about to come upon him,

It changed from go to come.

He says, come.

Noah, come into the ark.

I think indicating that he is calling and inviting him to himself.

God was now in the ark.

He said, Noah, come to me.

Come to my salvation that I'm providing.

Come to me.

Now, there's one last little thing I want to point out that we skimmed over earlier.

It's in chapter 7, verse 16.

It ends with the phrase,

And the Lord shut him in.

I love that.

It's a picture of God shutting the door to the ark

and then sealing it from the waters of judgment.

Here's our last principle.

When God saves us,

He seals us.

Ephesians chapter one says that

when we come to Jesus in faith,

that we are sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise,

the Holy Spirit of covenant.

We're sealed into Christ Jesus our Lord.

Now here's my question.

How safe do you think Noah was when he walked onto the ark where God was,

and when God shut the door behind him and God sealed him in from the waters of judgment?

How safe was he?

I'm telling you, he was very safe.

Why?

He had been secured by the very hand of Almighty God.

Well, I want to tell you today,

that I am not in an ark, but I am in Jesus Christ.

That's what scripture teaches.

In fact, it's one of the most fundamental,

most important teachings of the New Testament,

that all believers in Christ

are in Christ, that we're in him.

We are safe in him.

The Bible says if anyone's in Christ, he's a new creation.

Behold, all things have passed away.

Behold, all things have become new.

You see, Jesus is our ark of salvation.

He's our ark of safety.

We find rest in him.

All those who are in him are sealed and secured by the Holy Spirit of God and by the atoning work of Jesus.

So here's the invitation today. It's very simple.

Come into the ark.

Come.

Come.

Come, join me.

Join us in the ark of salvation.

Now, it's not enough to believe that there is an ark.

Let me be very clear.

It is not enough to believe there is an ark.

The people of Noah's day, they saw the ark.

They saw it be built for over 100 years.

They believed certainly that it existed.

It's not enough to believe it exists.

You've got to walk on board by faith.

You've got to get on.

You've got to trust the ark.

You've got to yield to the ark.

You've got to put your whole hope, your whole salvation in the ark,

which we know is Jesus, our Savior.

So the invitation has come.

Just come, come to Jesus today.

Jesus said, come to me,

all you who are weary and heavy laden,

and I will give you rest.

Let me ask you, do you need rest today?

Maybe the waters of your sin and the consequences of it

are, they're just invading your life

and you're working, trying to stay afloat,

but you have no rest.

I wanna invite you to allow the Holy Spirit of God

to touch you at a deep place within your soul,

and he can give you rest.

He can give you salvation.

The Bible, the invitation of the Bible is to come.

In fact, that's how the Bible ends.

Revelation chapter 22, verse number 17, it says,

Revelation 22 · chapter mention

In the Spirit and the bride say, Come.

And let him who hears, come.

And let him who thirsts, come.

Whoever desires, let him take of the water of life freely.

Would you come to Jesus today?

Let's bow together in an attitude of prayer, if you will.

This is a holy moment in the life of our church.

This is the moment that we've set aside.

to respond to God's word.

This is the moment

where we don't wanna just be hearers of the word,

but we wanna pray and we wanna talk to the Lord

about how this applies to our life

and we wanna be doers of the word.

We wanna believe, we wanna love, we wanna have faith.

So this is our time to ask the Lord to increase our faith

and to give us direction.

The Bible says, for the wages of sin is death.

Sometimes we look at the flood and we think,

man, that is, I can't believe God would have done that.

And the reason I think we struggle with that

is because we're corrupt.

We're marred by sin.

God is perfect.

So it's hard for us to understand how bad our sin really is.

But we think, how could God judge the world by flood?

How could?

All of those people die in God's judgment, but the truth is, the truth is, every one of us is going to die.

If the Lord tarries every single one of us, we're going to have our last breath of air.

Our heart's going to beat for the very last time.

Now, thankfully, we're going to learn next week, God's never going to destroy the entire earth at once in a flood.

We're not all going to die at once in a flood, but we're all going to die.

That's the judgment of God.

That's the reality of things.

But here's the truth of the matter.

In spite of our sin, in spite of the judgment we deserve,

God still loves us.

The Bible says that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

God loves you with a perfect love.

He loves you more than anyone's ever loved you before.

And he wants a relationship with you.

He wants you to walk with him now and forevermore.

You see, God sent his son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins.

He didn't deserve it.

We're the ones, we deserve, we corrupt our own ways.

But he came to be our substitute, to die in our place so that we could have life.

In him, he rose on the third day so we could have resurrection life as well.

And the Bible says, whosoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

In just a moment, I'm going to pray.

And as soon as I pray, I'm going to ask everyone to stand and we're going to sing a song.

And there's going to be pastors and other leaders here at the front.

And we're going to ask you to give your heart and your life to Jesus today.

Just to come as you are and say, I want to get on the ark.

It's time.

I don't want to wait.

I don't want to miss it.

I want to give my life to Jesus who loves me.

You know what?

These folks will know exactly how to help you.

They'll pray with you.

They'll minister to you.

Maybe say, I want to be baptized.

I want to go public with my faith.

That's wonderful.

Come let us know, and we would love to talk with you about what that means

In fact, in just a few weeks from now, first Sunday of December,

that's our 40th anniversary as a church.

What a wonderful day to get baptized on our 40th birthday as a church.

I think you'd remember that forever.

We can line that up or baptize you whenever God leads.

Whatever it is, I invite you to come as we sing in just a moment.

Let's pray.

Father, we thank you, Lord, for your love and your grace.

It's hard for us to fathom your judgments.

But Lord, we're reminded today about how bad our sin really is and how just you really are.

But thank you for your grace. Thank you for not wiping creation out entirely, but saving a remnant and starting over.

Lord, we know as we're going to see in your word that it didn't take long for the world to fall right back into a whole heap of sin.

But Lord, you are still gracious and you're still loving and you have extended your grace beyond that of just one family.

But through one family, you bless all the families of the earth through your son, Jesus.

Lord, admittedly, we read the flood account and I tried to make sense of different parts that we have questions about.

But the truth is, Lord, we don't know for sure all these answers.

We don't know how it happened.

We don't know this or that.

We know you sinned, and that's enough.

Help us, Lord, today.

We need you.

I pray that you would touch people's hearts and lives, Lord.

Help them believe.

Help their eyes be opened to the reality of you and your beauty and your love and your grace.

and the judgment that is the alternative.
