You in good shame and now here's your message. You're
-
listening to a podcast from Victory Jesus is the fulfillment
-
of the law. Discover more about this truth. In week
-
three of our series Redefined, they were going to.
-
Be talking about law and righteousness. I love law. I
-
love law. I thought I was going to be a lawyer, okay,
-
except I found out that you have to memory so
-
many stuff and read so many stuff when growing When
-
I was growing up, I love reading and and following
-
Perry Mason. I don't know if you know him. That's
-
way back Perry Mason. And then I have tons and
-
tons of books on John Grisham, okay, all about the law.
-
And then I follow a Law, he Law Magaga Age Style,
-
then a Law and Order, and then now Suits My
-
Famousness and a series now Suits talk about lawyers. But
-
I love law. But then I know that it's so
-
hard to comply with all the loss. Even though you
-
have a big library of all the laws, you cannot
-
fully comply it. You cannot fully comply one hundred percent.
-
You cannot be perfect. When we talk about righteousness, righteousness
-
is not actually based on complying to the laws, but
-
it talks to about our heart. Yes, we have to
-
comply with the law as much as we can, all
-
the civil laws, all the loss, we have to comply.
-
But then it's different if we are after God's righteous
-
I love how Chill said it earlier, that the righteousness
-
was given to us is not ours. It was given
-
to us. It was imputed to us by Jesus Christ.
-
It's his righteousness. Let's read Matthew five seventeen to eighteen.
-
These are texts. If you have your Bible, check your
-
Bible with me. If not, you can read from the screen.
-
Do not think that I have come to abolish the
-
law or the prophets. I have not come to abolish them,
-
but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you,
-
until heaven and earth passed away, not an iota that
-
a dot will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Therefore,
-
whoever relaxes of this one of the leavests of these
-
commandments and teaches others to do the same will be
-
called the least in the Kingdom of heaven. But whoever
-
does them and teaches them will be great in the
-
Kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness
-
exceeds that of the scribes and the Pharisees, you will
-
never enter the Kingdom of Heaven. The question when when
-
I was doing this peaching, question that always pops up
-
in my mind is this, can we actually meet God's
-
standard of righteousness? Can we the rules mak ayatai in righteousness,
-
rules and regulations? And then oftentime, oftentimes I don't know.
-
In our case, I would I would always hear my
-
mom or my dad said, expect hindi hind papantai and
-
mulang pantailang. My famous line that kulan expectation. But what
-
is God's expectation towards us? Is it compliance? Is it
-
simply adherence to the law? Adherence to the law means
-
para check list by what law check by? What law
-
check by? What law check? Is it? That way? I
-
found this article interestingly online when it said why intelligent
-
people are less likely to be religious thin context that
-
religious data is best in the church. Okay, I'm not
-
sure if it's Christianity or really relate or real or
-
genuine relationship with God. Okay, so think that so indigas smart?
-
Is that? Do you think that's true? I don't know.
-
It's based on a survey, based on a study. But
-
what it actually is implying is this that people people
-
people nowadays, they would you pour pass some nila is
-
to Bible word God. Most of the time, it's it's
-
those puzzling questions, is it true? Is it not true?
-
How true it is is if historical evidence doesn't talk
-
about faith, doesn't talk about faith, talks about intellect, doesn't
-
even talk about heart. It's all pure in the mind.
-
The tension there is the authority and relevancy of God's
-
word to our human opinion and reason. And guess what,
-
our mind is so finite, masqu you cannot comprehend God
-
because he's so big, it's so vast. That's why it
-
has to take lots of faith. The Bible even said
-
that we are faith. We don't actually see it, but
-
do we complain, No, we don't complaind we follow. We
-
follow because we know in our heart that He is
-
our Lord and our shavior. That's the problem. With the Pharisees.
-
As we go through the book of the whole Bible,
-
you see pharisees. Pharisees are those coten quote religious people
-
Selenahan twenty four to seven, Selena salles a sacrifice, but
-
they don't have a relationship with God. First verse Matthew
-
five seventeen. Do not think that I have come to
-
abolish the law or the prophets. I have not come
-
to abolish them. Why abolish? They said, abolish? Do what
-
do they want to abolish the law because they believe
-
in Jesus. I hope that was the case, but it's not.
-
They want to abolish the law. Why because they cannot
-
comply too much? Sobrang damming law? Sobran damming? Can you
-
can you imagine? Okay? Ten commandments? Alang? But after ten
-
the ten commments, the law is six hundred and thirteen laws.
-
How would you comply each one? Ten commandments memorized by
-
six hundred and thirteen the lass. It's so hard for
-
them to comply. That's why they said abolish the law.
-
Since you said that you are the son of God,
-
You're coming here to save us, Why do you just
-
abolish the law? They want an easy way out. They
-
they needed an escape goat and see Jesus Lord save
-
it called an escape My prayer, my prayer is that
-
what we won't be like those Pharisees, that we don't
-
come to church because we want an escape coat. Tell
-
you loud, it's between you and God. My prayer is
-
that you're doing victory group, hypership, victory weekend, that you're
-
serving not to try to find an escape coat, but
-
rather it is an overflow of your heart because you understand,
-
because you love, because Jesus is in you, and it's
-
there's an outworking in us. So how about the law
-
and Malona the mini mentioned DeTao the law in Matthew
-
talking about three kinds of law ceremonial law, civil law
-
and moral in ceremonial if you're you have your Bible
-
Leviticus in Leviticus or or when I was starting up.
-
But they think on the Leviticus Deuteronomy numbers numbers, no,
-
but it's important. Here are the ceremonial loss example a
-
few example laws for burnt offering. There's even loss for
-
grain offerings. Their loss for peace offerings example peace offering.
-
My law law for sin offering and different sin, offering
-
law for guilt offerings, even law for offerings, offerings, offerings,
-
offerings law, ceremonial laws. Hey, we do we we We
-
don't imply with them anymore. We don't do it. Why
-
because Jesus died and rose for all of those. Can
-
you imagine if we're still adhering to the ceremonial loss
-
every time and madadatupa aloya? Can you imagine that's gonna
-
Happeno comes, bone floor, nothing to go on. Second kind
-
of law is the civil law, civil law that applies
-
to daily living, Okay, daily living. Example Dito Deuteronomy twenty
-
four loss concerning divorce, miscellaneous laws. When a man is
-
newly married, he shall not go out with the army
-
or be liable for any other public duty. He shall
-
be free at home one year to be happy with
-
his wife, whom he has taken mammagnum loss. Because of
-
our modern society, it doesn't it doesn't makes sense anymore
-
to us. The last kind of law is the moral law,
-
such as the Ten Commandments. Moral law is the direct
-
command of God, and it requires strict obedience. And even
-
Jesus was very strict with this that he complies that
-
he does all the laws. Problemen of Pharisees Paris is
-
that baas baas even to today, one of the ten commandments,
-
keep your sabbath holy. Okay, alumn you bah you might
-
juice because if it's their sabbath, they cannot put on
-
their false teeth. Pushtiso because it's like you're working when
-
you go when you go to the Israel. Now, if
-
it's sabbath, nobody would push the the the the elevator
-
to go up. Why because it's lifting their hand and
-
its work in its work. So what they do is
-
they wait for tourists or gentiles like us, but they know,
-
what do you Florila, let's have it didn't work, peninsula.
-
We add, we try to water it down. We add
-
things to feel like that makes sense, but or it
-
doesn't make sense. Today. Three things I want to explain
-
with the our texts is the pop of the law, purpose, observance,
-
and perfectory. The purpose of the law, observance of the law,
-
and the perfector of the law. Talk about purpose, What
-
is the purpose? All about? Purpose is important. If we
-
don't know the purpose, it's hard to obey. If we
-
don't know what the law is there, for he is
-
example in our house. Okay, every time we would make
-
a new rule or new regulations in the house, we
-
have to talk on it on our dinner table. I
-
already have two grown son fifteen and seventeen years old. Said,
-
it's a conversation. Lara's there, but Lara's just listening and
-
she doesn't know anything in the hand. But we have
-
to set them down and tell them this is the
-
new rule, and then we have to go through it.
-
Why why is this important now? Because this is our
-
season if we need to do built tightening, why because
-
we're saving up for this purpose. We need to look
-
at the purpose of the law in order to understand
-
what Jesus means in his declaration. And his purpose is
-
not to harm us. His purpose is not to limit
-
us un a problem. Sometimes when we see law, what
-
comes into our mind? ISLI have you heard a lot
-
of people They don't want to give their lives to
-
Jesus because they would always say, hey, Bible, bawl dito
-
bowelram promises cal Roman seven verse seven said, what then
-
shall we say that the law is sin by no means?
-
Yet if he had if it had not been for
-
the law, I would not have known sin, for I
-
would not have known what it is to covet if
-
the law had not said you shall not covet. Paul
-
here in this passage explains that the law is not bad,
-
it is not sin, but it points people their sin,
-
our sin. If you look at it, the law is
-
like a mirror. Okay, it's it's like a mirror. And
-
every time we consult the law, it shows us how
-
sinful we are and how we are so much in
-
need of a savior. That's the purpose of the law. Sindarica,
-
guess what, because you're a sinner, I'm gonna give you
-
a savior. For those who don't treat their Bible, for
-
those who who don't like to surrender their lives, they
-
miss a big part. That's not all about us being sinful,
-
but God given God has given us a savior. The
-
Lord therefore tells us that we are sinners and the
-
need of savior. It actually shows us the impossibility of
-
acquiring our own righteousness by simply obeying to the laws
-
that we cannot do for our own. In Romans three,
-
verse twenty, it said, therefore, by the deeds of the law,
-
there shall be no flesh be justified in his side.
-
For the law is the knowledge of sin. It opens
-
our mind, it makes us aware next verse eighteen. For verified,
-
I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass one
-
job and one title. Shall is no wise pass from
-
the law till all be fulfilled. King James version. I
-
love how he said there even a jot even or
-
one title. When they translated the Bible into English. You
-
Hebrewsma annotations Marsileama, my apostrophe, my one line inverted V.
-
It's simply saying that what even the smallest detail of
-
God's law, we have to comply, even the smallest detail.
-
No if no, But look in Deuteronomy six twenty five,
-
and he said, and it will be righteousness for us
-
if we are careful to do what to do, all,
-
to do all this commandment before the Lord, our God,
-
and he commanded us. It's all. We cannot make an excuse.
-
We cannot just say, okay, it doesn't comply to me
-
if you do that. If we do that, we are
-
no exception, no difference with the Pharisees verse nineteen. Therefore,
-
anyone who sets aside one of the least of these
-
commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in
-
the kingdom of heaven. But whoever practices and teaches these
-
commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
-
How many of you when you go to heaven you
-
want to be great? Of course, all of us wants
-
to be great. It gave us already afford days. Do
-
not set it aside. It means comply everything. It means
-
give up your heart and obey obedience. You know, there
-
are several several what they called there several responses of
-
people with the law about being righteous. Some would actually
-
reject it, reject it as obsolete. Hey, by Bollyan by
-
Billyan Totoya, I understand it's true, but absolute Niana Babasania Canal.
-
There's a new version. It's not about the the the interpretation,
-
but it's what you consume in your heart. The veracity
-
of the Bible has been verified to stand the test
-
of time, and it would always remain. The question now
-
is if it's irrelevant to you. Why is it irrelevant?
-
Maybe it's because you don't want to comply. Next, is
-
we we Actually some people would try to modify it,
-
like the pharisees adjust, adjust to it. Can imagine the
-
Ten Commandments, obeying parent history, in success history, in sabad,
-
I'll keep it holy murder murders or murder parent, honor God,
-
young young people. Yeah, because malas we we try to modify.
-
We we sometimes we look at Christianity as like a
-
buffet depending bucket paras diva. Guys, don't don't don't drink
-
why you get full, but I'm thirsty. Soup soup soup love.
-
Don't don't eat rice, Why it's carb is gonna make
-
you bloated, But but that there's there, there's sauce. There's
-
need to go on. Sometimes we do that. Sometimes we
-
do that even in our Christian walk, we try to
-
modify it. Some people are just oblivious, they don't care,
-
they don't care with what's happening all around. And some
-
are very legalistic. Legalistic means okay, I adhere to the law.
-
I do not set it aside. But it's too much.
-
It's like the law is my God. That's bad also
-
because nobody and nothing should take the place of God
-
in our lives and teaches others accordingly. My prayer is
-
this that we teach, we tell people. We show people
-
that they see it in us. You know, what's the
-
purpose of the law? Is it to be great? Not
-
here on earth, but in the kingdom of Him. We
-
really fine thinking say that what matters most is our obedience,
-
our heart for God. In Matthew six thirty three, it said,
-
seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness. Not
-
all the success, all your success, not all your good grades,
-
their good, not all your richest No, but said seek
-
first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all
-
this shall be added unto you. Everything else is a bonus.
-
I always say this after Christianity. Everything else is a bonus.
-
Seeing life life, Hey on, bonus, nlan yan, because you're
-
already complete in christ indecana promote. Oh hey long ya,
-
God has something better for you. Seek him first, and
-
everything else will be added unto you. Next is observance.
-
Remember pop, what's the first one purpose? And then now
-
we observe? How do we observe? In verse twenty said,
-
for I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that
-
of the Pharisees, like we make, we make a search
-
onto the pharies a while ago. We tell them how
-
they define themselves We'll tell them how they how they
-
try to comply, but they adjust things. Jesus saying, here,
-
do not be like them, direct naon in the Sermon
-
of the Mouth, some of the Pharisees were actually there.
-
Can you imagine scenario. My people don't be like them.
-
I sort my people do not be like them, because
-
they know, they see, they see, they see, they know,
-
they they saw how the Pharisees live. And He's saying,
-
do not be like them, and the teachers of the
-
you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven. This
-
shows the impossibility of making one's righteousness before God. Pharisees,
-
they have a work salvation mentality. You know that work, work, work,
-
work righte work your way out here, work your way
-
to heaven. Work with your way. It works salvation. But
-
in Asaiah sixty four, verse six, it said all of
-
us have become like one who is unclean, and all
-
our righteous acts are like filthy rags. We all shrivel
-
up like a leaf, and like the wind, our sins
-
sweep us away where it's like filthy rags. Even though
-
we do good works, it still feel and it still smell,
-
and it still looks like filthy rags. It's saying that
-
it's impossible to please God apart from Jesus Christ, apart
-
from our faith, apart from our journey and walk with
-
the Lord. Everything else is like filthy rct. The scripture
-
teaches us repeatedly that sinners are capable of nothing but
-
flawed and imperfect righteousness. But thanks be to God that
-
he gave Jesus to us. Therefore, the only righteousness by
-
which sinners may be justified is the perfect righteousness of God,
-
imputed in us through Jesus. Romance four. And to the
-
one who does not work but believes in Him who
-
justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as what as righteousness,
-
just as David also speaks of the blessing of the
-
one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works importante
-
deader see David. Why did Paul use David? Because we
-
know that David is after God's heart, But we also
-
know that David did so many sin Remember but Sheba,
-
remember Rayah, he did all of those. But he's making
-
a point here. I am not after how clean or
-
perfect we are. You are the Lord, say I take
-
you as it is, as you are if David still,
-
I look at somebody who is after my heart, So
-
are you, Church. Do not be also too hard on yourself.
-
That is not from the Lord. When the Lord says
-
that I will not count any sin, he says, I
-
will not count and record any of our sins. Do
-
not be too hard on us. We have to understand
-
how loving, how faithful, how Yes, there's justice, but there's
-
mercy in the Lord. And then Paul continued, Blessed are
-
those whose lawless deeds are forgiven and whose sins are covered.
-
Blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not
-
count his sin. It has to penetrate our heart. Jesus
-
was saying that his listens that to his listeners that
-
you need to have a different approach, different thing on
-
on on love and obedience. Love and obedience is one
-
and the same. It's it cannot just be love and
-
then obey. It cannot just be you're obeying, but you
-
don't love it. Our righteousness must first and foremost draw
-
from what God did not on our us. If there's
-
love and obedience, it has to be God centered, not
-
self centered. Your righteousness not intel centered than God. Lord.
-
And in purpose, money Wilmo. If it's not, it's not
-
love and obedience. It has to it has to be
-
based on the reference of God, that we are pleasing God,
-
not men example Nacole. Every time we we we tell
-
them to comply, we always ask, every time we we
-
discipline them, we always ask, do you have anything to say?
-
Is it? Is it okay with you? As in pure
-
a heart? Discipline at all? Because if it's not, let's
-
talk about it. We're always after the heart, not the obedience,
-
obedience out towards parapharracies, behavioral modification, and guess what after
-
we forget, we stumble down. If we don't correct our heart,
-
it would recur. It would always check our heart. I
-
love how how how Jonathan Edwards said. Pastor Jonathan and
-
Doctor Jonathan Edwards said that the Gospel is to be
-
preached as well as the law. We will we don't abolish,
-
you don't put one aside. And the law is to
-
be preached only to make the way for the what
-
for the Gospel, Because if we know that we're so
-
sinful and in need of a savior, we need Jesus Christ.
-
We need the Gospel, and in order that it may
-
be each more Effectively, the Gospel without the law is
-
that perfect both has to be there. Jesus is pointing
-
out that he came to do what nobody else can.
-
Last point, here is perfector. Who is the perfector Jesus Christ.
-
He's the perfector of our faith. But to fulfill them.
-
Fulfill here means to make us complete, to make it complete.
-
Jesus came to complete the law. Jesus was actually saying
-
that all the laws that were written is still in
-
It was incomplete. Why because I am the fulfillment of
-
the law. When I say I was prophesying, he was
-
talking about Jesus. When when When when Moses was given
-
the law, there was a promise and a completion in
-
Christ alone the Lord is coming. When even before Jesus
-
was born, they knew that there was a messiah to come.
-
He completes it. Redefined means that this speaks of fulfillment
-
in the same sense that the prophecy is fulfilled. Christ
-
indicates that he fulfills the law in all aspects, whether
-
it be civil law, whether it be ceremonial law, whether
-
it be the moral law. It talks directly to our heart,
-
makes it perfect. I love this quote. I borrow this
-
from pastorally. Do you remember Pastor ly, I love this,
-
And he said, the law points to our sins, as
-
the prophets point to our savior. The completion what makes
-
it complete? That means when you come to church and
-
expect you to be complete. My prayer is that you
-
know that you have accepted the Lord as your savior,
-
to make it complete. Because without Christ, what we're doing
-
here is nothing. It's nothing. John one sixteen, verse seventeen said,
-
from the fullness of his grace, we have all received
-
one blessing after another. Fullness. It's not partial. Fullness means complete.
-
That He gave us the installment. My parents they love
-
me because and all so misa installments happened. Alameen, okay,
-
But my good grade ninety percent installment. No, what God
-
gave us, it's complete fullness in Christ. For the law
-
was given through Moses. Grace and truth came from who
-
Jesus Christ. So there is no excuse. Now why can
-
we be righteous because we're complete in Christ. The law
-
was given through Moses, but grace, truth, now faith is
-
given to us. This is our response. This is in
-
Hebrews four fourteen to seventeen. It said, Since then we
-
have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus,
-
the Son of God. Let us hold fast our confession.
-
There's a big response that we have to take hold of.
-
Hold fast means do not let go. Hold fast means
-
hold faster. Your confession as Jesus, your Lord and Savior,
-
means whatever comes my way, I won't let go. It
-
means whatever it is, I won't let go. Why because
-
of that confession? Because Lord, you are true, because you're
-
you are complete nothing, and no one would ever complete
-
me Verse fifteen. For we do not have a high
-
priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but
-
one who in every respect has been tempted as we
-
are yet without sin. Talks about Jesus, talks about him
-
being our high priest. That means the law, the law
-
of the sacrifice, nothing anymore white. Because Jesus became our
-
ultimate sacrifice. He is our high priest. He's now in
-
heaven interceding for you and I, even though we sin,
-
Even though there are times that we just don't mind him,
-
or either oblivious or sometimes we're so legalistic with the law,
-
He's saying it's okay, I'm still here. I'll be your
-
high priest. Verse sixteen. Let us, then, with confidence draw
-
near to the throne of grace, that we may receive
-
mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
-
All you have to do, the Father is saying, unto you,
-
my sons and my daughters, just come back to me,
-
approach me, Be confident, be strong and courageous. Your sins
-
are forgiven. I don't keep even a record of it,
-
but know that when you come, it has to be wholehearted.
-
It cannot be I'll take this for now. Why because
-
iona carbs. The Lord is gracious. But remember again that
-
the Lord in the Lord, there's justice. There's justice as well,
-
you know, direct obedience. When we talk about righteousness, godly
-
righteousness talks about one thing, talks about lordship. Who is
-
your Lord? Yes, I know that all of us would
-
say if I ask you, who's your savior, Lord Jesus Christ.
-
But you see your Lord, then we put all our
-
hands down. Lordship is not about our attitude, But lordship
-
talks completely about our hearts. What's in our heart? When
-
that when the Lord looks in you heart, who is there?
-
What is there. What are the sins, the lies? Let's pray, Father,
-
in our own way, in our own where we are
-
right now, Father, in our own seats, where we stand, Lord,
-
we repent whatever it is. Confess it to God right now,
-
how small, how big that sin is, confess it to him. Say, Lord,
-
that is not my confession. My confession is you, our
-
Lord over our lives. Our confession is you and you alone.
-
Our confession is there's no other one but you. So Father,
-
I pray right now we repent of our sins. Lord.
-
We pray Lord God, Lord, that we will hold fast,
-
meaning we won't let go, meaning whatever comes our way,
-
it's you and you alone. You are the Lord. You
-
are the king over our lives. No one but you.
-
Apart from you, Father, we are nothing. Lord. I also pray,
-
Lord God, that you give us grace. Can I just
-
ask everybody to just raise up our hands, Father, give
-
us grace. Make it abound in us, make it be
-
evident in and through us, all the works of our hands. Lord,
-
even from our mind, Lord God, however small, our big
-
the idea, Lord God, even even temptations, Lord, God, Lord,
-
I pray Lord for your grace. Apart from your grace,
-
Lord God, we cannot survive. So Lord, do this change
-
in us. Lord. I pray Lord God that we are
-
not anymore defined by the world, but we are redefined
-
