  1. If you're a visitor, you're a little bit disadvantaged because we're going to cover a lot of territory this morning.

  2. Our own people have had a chance to read this through during the week.

  3. But anyway, we'll see how you go.

  4. I want to begin this morning in Hebrews chapter 11.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  5. We talk about Gideon.

  6. I want to ask the question, is it a portrait hung in the wrong gallery?

  7. So Hebrews 11 is known as God's portrait gallery.

  8. Of the faithful ones.

  9. The great ones of the faith.

  10. Now the problem is that as I walk around that gallery in Hebrews chapter 11, I see and hear different names.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  11. And I think, yep, yep, clearly they deserve to be there.

  12. Clearly they deserve to be there.

  13. But then I get to Gideon's portrait.

  14. And I find myself wondering, as I say, has this portrait been hung in the wrong place, in the wrong gallery?

  15. Preachers and Sunday school teachers have made Gideon into a hero.

  16. A great hero who, with a tiny force, they say, of 300 crack troops, completely destroyed an army.

  17. An enemy invasion force of 135,000.

  18. So Gideon's a hero.

  19. My problem is that as I read the story of Gideon, in Judges 6, 7, and 8, the Gideon I have to engage with presents as a very different person.

  20. To be honest, he doesn't immediately inspire me as a great person of faith.

  21. He's a very flawed human being.

  22. And at points, I think, you'd have to say, he's a very ugly human being in terms of his character.

  23. Has somebody got it wrong and hung the portrait in their own gallery?

  24. Well, clearly not.

  25. The problem is not that the portrait's hung in their own gallery.

  26. The problem is that we look at the portrait from their own perspective.

  27. We tend to think that when somebody's in that gallery, then every single aspect of their life has been one of faith.

  28. Well, I don't think that's true at all.

  29. I think Gideon, like everybody else in that gallery, is there because at critical points,

  30. they manage to show a good response to the Lord.

  31. In what was otherwise pretty ordinary lives.

  32. Clearly, Gideon is used by the Lord to effect great rescue.

  33. But I think when we're looking at that portrait in the gallery of faith,

  34. we don't actually just look at the portrait.

  35. We look at the maestro who compiled that portrait.

  36. The maestro behind the portrait.

  37. The artist.

  38. The Lord who persevered with Gideon.

  39. The Lord who crafted Gideon into that critical moment of faith

  40. where the rest of his life was, as I say, very ordinary, very ugly at points.

  41. That critical moment where Gideon does, with the Lord's enabling,

  42. step out in faith and show the leadership that the Lord commands.

  43. But the Lord still goes before him, even at that point.

  44. But at that point, that critical moment, Gideon knows he's going out in the strength of the Lord

  45. and he's content to reveal God's character and grace and power in that situation.

  46. So it's not Gideon who's the hero of this story we're looking at this morning.

  47. Of course, it's the Lord who's the hero.

  48. And what the Lord's doing in this story is showcasing through Gideon and the external circumstances,

  49. the Lord is showcasing his faithfulness.

  50. Not Gideon's.

  51. His mercy.

  52. His patience to people who clearly don't deserve any of his patience or his mercy or his faithfulness.

  53. Showing himself as a savior to those who would not be able to save themselves through their own resources.

  54. So jump into the story with me this morning.

  55. And I want to show you something really sad at the beginning and the end of the story that frames the whole story.

  56. So chapter 6, verses 1 to 11 is the first bookend or the first frame of the story.

  57. And that begins with what seems to be an identical cycle of outright rejection.

  58. Loss of distinctiveness as God's people.

  59. So we've been through this cycle a few times.

  60. We've got God's people responding to suffering.

  61. God sends suffering upon his people for this outright rebellion.

  62. But there's a couple of key indicators here that we need to take up as we move forward.

  63. This is only one generation later.

  64. And I think the 40 years is probably a stylistic way of talking about a generation rather than literal 40 years.

  65. So just one generation later and we're doing it all again.

  66. And as we start to think about that then,

  67. I think we begin to realize or suspect that what we've called a cycle,

  68. that is something that goes round and round endlessly,

  69. is actually something a bit worse than a cycle.

  70. It's a downward spiral.

  71. That is, it's going round and round,

  72. but each time we go around, things are getting worse.

  73. God's people are finding new depths of rebellion.

  74. New ways to be offensive to their Lord.

  75. This time, the cycle includes suffering at the hands of the Midianites.

  76. And that is a coalition again of semi-nomadic tribes from the east.

  77. And what marks these guys out is that they pioneered camels,

  78. yes, camels, as strategic military weapons.

  79. So this armed force that we find out later on of 135,000 came on camels.

  80. Now that meant that for the first time,

  81. they had a long-range, fast-moving, mobile strike force.

  82. And we're told in here that they struck absolute terror

  83. into the hearts of the Israelites.

  84. They invaded every year at harvest time, and like locusts,

  85. they just came and they stripped the whole land bare.

  86. And God's people were so terrified

  87. that they were forced to hide in caves in the hills,

  88. trying to save enough food to get themselves through the wintertime.

  89. God's people were starving, literally, and terrified.

  90. And in desperation, and again, as a last resort,

  91. after enduring seven years of this invasion,

  92. God's people appealed to the Lord for help.

  93. And once again, the Lord responds.

  94. But look at verse 7 of chapter 6,

  95. because the response of the Lord this time is quite different.

  96. This time, he sends us a prophet for some unknown time

  97. before he actually sends Gideon, the saviour.

  98. Now, why would the Lord send a prophet this time around?

  99. Why is the cycle different?

  100. Well, we're not actually told,

  101. but I think this might be a reasonable solution.

  102. I think it's this,

  103. that God's people had been around this cycle enough times now

  104. and knew of it from their history

  105. that it had just become a formula for them.

  106. They had just learned,

  107. well, okay, when suffering happens,

  108. if we cry out to the Lord,

  109. then he will deliver us.

  110. So it was almost like

  111. as if their crying out to the Lord

  112. was just a key to unlock God's blessings.

  113. And each cycle goes around.

  114. There's less and less heartfelt ownership of sin

  115. behind the plea.

  116. No, they just want the formula to work.

  117. If we do this, then God will do that.

  118. And that sounds so familiar to us, doesn't it?

  119. Because that's just what we're like, too.

  120. And so God, instead of sending them to deliver straight up,

  121. sends them a prophet.

  122. Now, what's the prophet to do?

  123. Well, the prophet explains to them

  124. and helps them understand

  125. why they're in the predicament they're in.

  126. And the predicament they're in

  127. is a direct response

  128. of their dealing with God's character.

  129. He presents himself in these verses here

  130. as the covenant God.

  131. Their covenant God.

  132. Your covenant God.

  133. And he said,

  134. I brought you to myself

  135. so that you might be my people

  136. and you might reflect my character.

  137. I covenanted myself to you.

  138. And what have you done?

  139. You've thrown my generosity,

  140. my graciousness,

  141. my kindness

  142. back in my face.

  143. All I wanted you guys to do

  144. was, verse in there,

  145. was fear me.

  146. But

  147. rather than fear me,

  148. rather than respect me,

  149. rather than desire me,

  150. and that's what the word means,

  151. rather than show honor to me,

  152. you've actually given all of that

  153. to the gods of the Canaanites.

  154. So if you want to know

  155. why you're in this mess,

  156. there it is.

  157. I'm your covenant-keeping God

  158. and you've rejected me

  159. for

  160. the local gods.

  161. Now turn to chapter 8,

  162. verse 33,

  163. and I'll read these verses to you

  164. to see the other end of the story

  165. and the other part of the frame.

  166. And man,

  167. this is just sad.

  168. This is just worse than sad.

  169. It's awful.

  170. So we're going to the far end

  171. of the story now

  172. and it says this,

  173. chapter 8,

  174. verse 33,

  175. As soon as Gideon died,

  176. the people of Israel

  177. turned again

  178. and whored,

  179. that's prostituted,

  180. prostituted

  181. after the Baals,

  182. that's the false gods again,

  183. and made Baal Berith

  184. their God.

  185. And the people of Israel

  186. did not remember

  187. the Lord their God

  188. who delivered them

  189. from the hand

  190. of all their enemies

  191. on every side.

  192. And they did not show

  193. steadfast love

  194. to the family of Jeroboam.

  195. The cycle of Judges

  196. is a vicious downward spiral.

  197. This wonderful story

  198. of deliverance

  199. and rescue by the Lord

  200. ends as it began

  201. with the complete rejection

  202. of the covenant God.

  203. But it's worse than that.

  204. It's the complete rejection

  205. of God

  206. by those who received

  207. the most incredible blessings

  208. from Him.

  209. And it happened when?

  210. As soon as Gideon died.

  211. It really is

  212. easier to trust

  213. the Lord

  214. in adversity

  215. than it is

  216. to be faithful

  217. to the Lord

  218. in prosperity,

  219. isn't it?

  220. And that's just

  221. abominable

  222. when you consider

  223. that's how

  224. the story's framed.

  225. But there's even worse

  226. in that story.

  227. If you look at verse 33,

  228. it says,

  229. they whored after Baals

  230. and made Baal Berith

  231. their God.

  232. Now that word

  233. Baal Berith,

  234. that's the name of a God.

  235. And that word Berith

  236. is the Hebrew word

  237. for covenant.

  238. So it's actually

  239. even more outrageous

  240. because God presents

  241. at the start of the story

  242. and says,

  243. look,

  244. I am your covenant God.

  245. I'm the one

  246. who's committed to you,

  247. promised to be

  248. faithful to you,

  249. promised to make you

  250. the people you are,

  251. promised to bring you

  252. blessing,

  253. promised to give you

  254. the good life.

  255. And what do God's people

  256. do after they've

  257. experienced all of that

  258. deliverance from God's hand?

  259. They commit to

  260. the covenant with

  261. a false God,

  262. Baal Berith.

  263. They make a covenant

  264. with this false God

  265. to seek from him

  266. the very thing

  267. that they've actually

  268. experienced

  269. from the Lord.

  270. That doesn't get

  271. much more arrogant

  272. than that,

  273. does it?

  274. That's a petulant child

  275. coming up close

  276. to a father's face

  277. and saying,

  278. stuff you.

  279. Yahweh,

  280. for these people,

  281. may well have been

  282. a God

  283. for a time

  284. of crisis,

  285. but at every

  286. other point

  287. of life,

  288. the other gods

  289. were far more

  290. desirable.

  291. It's starting to have

  292. a very familiar ring

  293. to us,

  294. isn't it?

  295. Simon's already

  296. helped us think

  297. about that

  298. in his introduction.

  299. So,

  300. once we come into

  301. the detail of the story

  302. with that framework,

  303. we have to say

  304. yet,

  305. because it's

  306. absolutely amazing

  307. as far as I can see

  308. that the Lord

  309. acts to deliver

  310. his people

  311. using Gideon,

  312. who himself

  313. is part of the problem,

  314. a very ordinary leader.

  315. So,

  316. given the framing

  317. of this story,

  318. we have to say,

  319. yet,

  320. in spite of all that,

  321. the Lord

  322. acts to deliver

  323. his people.

  324. From his first

  325. appearance in the story,

  326. Gideon is anything

  327. but the heroic figure

  328. or mighty man

  329. of valor,

  330. as his name suggests.

  331. Now,

  332. I've pondered this

  333. a fair bit this week,

  334. and I'm still not sure

  335. whether the Lord

  336. was actually having

  337. a lend of Gideon.

  338. I'm very open

  339. to the idea

  340. of sarcasm

  341. in the Bible.

  342. And I think

  343. this might be

  344. one of those,

  345. oh,

  346. you mighty man

  347. of valor.

  348. Something like that.

  349. I don't know.

  350. I don't know what it is.

  351. But he certainly

  352. doesn't really

  353. immediately impress you

  354. as a heroic figure

  355. because when he's

  356. first come across

  357. by this angel,

  358. he's actually

  359. thrashing out

  360. a few heads

  361. of wheat

  362. in a wine press.

  363. Now,

  364. a wine press

  365. is actually

  366. a depression

  367. in the rock.

  368. Normally,

  369. you would thrash

  370. out in the open

  371. when you get

  372. the breeze on it.

  373. And normally,

  374. you would thrash

  375. with a machine.

  376. But Gideon

  377. is hiding

  378. from the marauding

  379. hordes,

  380. stamping out

  381. with his feet,

  382. beating out

  383. with a stick

  384. or whatever,

  385. a few heads

  386. of wheat,

  387. enough possibly

  388. to protect his family

  389. and keep them

  390. from starving

  391. over the wintertime.

  392. So it's not

  393. a heroic picture.

  394. And the angel's

  395. just sitting there

  396. having a look

  397. at Gideon.

  398. G'day,

  399. mighty man of fowler.

  400. I think it's sarcasm.

  401. But whatever.

  402. Verse 12,

  403. what really matters

  404. is that

  405. the Lord is with you.

  406. That's what the angel

  407. who turns out

  408. to be the Lord himself

  409. in the form

  410. of a person,

  411. as you see

  412. the story develop,

  413. the Lord is with you.

  414. That's the key

  415. to understanding

  416. everything else

  417. that happens

  418. in the story

  419. of Gideon.

  420. And the first thing

  421. the Lord does

  422. with Gideon

  423. is to make him

  424. see

  425. that he is part

  426. of the problem.

  427. And he does that

  428. in this series

  429. of exchanges

  430. between verse 11

  431. through to verse 24.

  432. So there's

  433. a tussle going on.

  434. So the angel

  435. of the Lord

  436. which is the Lord

  437. himself

  438. says certain things

  439. to Gideon.

  440. And Gideon

  441. responds with

  442. anger and arrogance.

  443. And remember

  444. this is all

  445. on top of

  446. this prophet

  447. who's come

  448. to help

  449. God's people

  450. understand

  451. the whole problem.

  452. So Gideon

  453. still hasn't learned

  454. very much at all.

  455. Verse 12 and 13

  456. the angel said

  457. the Lord is with you.

  458. And Gideon

  459. responds angrily

  460. well that's all

  461. very fine saying that

  462. but I want to tell you

  463. that we feel

  464. totally abandoned

  465. by the Lord.

  466. Verse 14 and 15

  467. even more directly

  468. the Lord says

  469. I am sending you

  470. to deliver my people.

  471. As if that's

  472. going to work.

  473. I'm a nobody.

  474. Yeah right.

  475. Good.

  476. verses 16, 17 and 18

  477. the Lord says

  478. once more

  479. I will be with you

  480. and I will defeat

  481. that army for you

  482. as if there was

  483. only just one man

  484. in front of you.

  485. Gideon says

  486. don't give me words

  487. prove it.

  488. And it goes in

  489. in verse 19

  490. through 24

  491. there's a story there

  492. read it more carefully

  493. if you haven't already

  494. read it.

  495. The Lord really

  496. does give Gideon

  497. a proof

  498. that crashes

  499. through

  500. his anger

  501. and faithless

  502. unbelief

  503. and makes him

  504. realize two very

  505. important things.

  506. So Gideon brings out

  507. this meal

  508. and remember

  509. this is a meal

  510. prepared for this

  511. stranger

  512. and it was quite a

  513. large amount

  514. of food

  515. from a family

  516. that was already

  517. starving potentially.

  518. And what does he do?

  519. He puts it in a rock

  520. and zaps it

  521. fries it.

  522. And suddenly

  523. Gideon

  524. realizes

  525. that he's in a bit

  526. of a pickle here.

  527. Alex isn't here

  528. I shouldn't have said

  529. that but I've wasted

  530. it on Alex.

  531. That's an end joke

  532. for us here.

  533. So Gideon

  534. realizes

  535. there's something

  536. going on here

  537. that's well beyond him.

  538. And he's brought

  539. to realize

  540. two things.

  541. He describes it here

  542. verse 24

  543. Gideon built an altar

  544. there to the Lord

  545. and called it

  546. the Lord is peace.

  547. Jehovah

  548. Shalom.

  549. Gideon has been

  550. at war

  551. with God.

  552. He's angry.

  553. He's unbelieving.

  554. He's distant.

  555. It's Gideon

  556. that's been at war

  557. with God

  558. and he suddenly

  559. realizes

  560. that God

  561. wants to come

  562. to him

  563. in peace.

  564. Gideon realizes

  565. that he's

  566. the problem

  567. not the Lord.

  568. And the second thing

  569. that flows from that

  570. overflows

  571. from the heart

  572. of Gideon

  573. suddenly

  574. is that the

  575. proper response

  576. to God

  577. is not doubt

  578. anger

  579. unbelief

  580. arrogance

  581. demandingness

  582. or fear.

  583. The proper

  584. response

  585. to the Lord

  586. is worship.

  587. Gideon

  588. built an altar

  589. there to the Lord

  590. and called it

  591. the Lord is peace.

  592. Gideon's

  593. recognized

  594. his part

  595. in the problem

  596. that is facing

  597. his whole nation

  598. and he's

  599. brought to a point

  600. of genuine

  601. humility

  602. and worship

  603. of the Lord.

  604. God had to

  605. break

  606. Gideon

  607. before Gideon

  608. could break

  609. the Midianites.

  610. then the Lord

  611. makes him clean

  612. up his own

  613. backyard

  614. verses 25

  615. through 33.

  616. So before

  617. the enemies

  618. around them

  619. could be destroyed

  620. the enemy

  621. within

  622. had to be

  623. destroyed

  624. and Gideon's

  625. first battle

  626. was in his

  627. own backyard

  628. to destroy

  629. the pagan

  630. shrine

  631. built there

  632. by his father

  633. Joash.

  634. And the Lord

  635. gives Gideon

  636. very careful

  637. instructions

  638. and so Gideon

  639. actually

  640. steps out

  641. in faith

  642. having been

  643. brought to

  644. heal as it were

  645. he steps now

  646. out in faith

  647. carefully

  648. following God's

  649. instructions

  650. and thereby

  651. destroys

  652. all these

  653. religious icons

  654. but it's not

  655. just destroying

  656. them

  657. the way in

  658. which he

  659. destroys them

  660. actually makes

  661. a mockery

  662. of them.

  663. The bull

  664. was the

  665. sign of

  666. strength

  667. of Baal.

  668. The Lord

  669. says

  670. actually

  671. those two

  672. bulls

  673. you know

  674. the religious

  675. thing

  676. you rip

  677. down the

  678. altars

  679. first of all

  680. then butcher

  681. the bulls

  682. then burn

  683. them.

  684. It's making

  685. them whole

  686. mockery

  687. of the

  688. thing.

  689. And use

  690. by the way

  691. use the

  692. Asherah

  693. pole

  694. the very

  695. cultic

  696. symbol

  697. of religion

  698. and fertility

  699. and preciousness

  700. just use that

  701. for the fire

  702. while you're

  703. burning those

  704. bulls.

  705. It's just

  706. slapstick

  707. comedy.

  708. And then we

  709. see something

  710. of the hearts

  711. of the people

  712. and Gideon

  713. saw also

  714. something of

  715. the hearts

  716. of the people

  717. because he

  718. knew jolly

  719. well that

  720. they were so

  721. committed to

  722. Baal there

  723. were going to

  724. be problems

  725. and he wasn't

  726. disappointed.

  727. The next

  728. morning the

  729. workout that

  730. Gideon did

  731. overnight and

  732. so they

  733. demand his

  734. death.

  735. Get that.

  736. God's

  737. own special

  738. people while

  739. they were

  740. busy treating

  741. God with

  742. absolute

  743. contempt

  744. now want to

  745. drag Gideon

  746. out and

  747. kill him

  748. because he

  749. dishonored

  750. their God

  751. their Baal.

  752. But Gideon's

  753. father Joash

  754. comes to his

  755. rescue.

  756. And it's

  757. interesting there's

  758. a lot going on

  759. here.

  760. I just don't

  761. have time to

  762. stop.

  763. There's a

  764. sermon just

  765. in the imagery

  766. here by

  767. itself.

  768. So the

  769. name of

  770. Baal is

  771. in Hebrew

  772. El.

  773. And that's

  774. in contrast

  775. with the

  776. name of

  777. Jehovah

  778. Elohim.

  779. There's a

  780. clash going

  781. on here.

  782. Joash

  783. means Yahweh

  784. delivers or

  785. the Lord

  786. delivers.

  787. That's what

  788. his name

  789. means.

  790. So the

  791. Lord delivers

  792. comes to

  793. Gideon's

  794. defense and

  795. the incident

  796. ends awkwardly

  797. with Gideon

  798. being renamed

  799. Jerabbaal.

  800. Meaning

  801. may Baal

  802. deliver.

  803. It's a

  804. contest to

  805. see who

  806. is real.

  807. And we're

  808. not given

  809. the answer.

  810. It just

  811. ends awkwardly.

  812. Perhaps because

  813. we're supposed

  814. to know the

  815. answer already.

  816. And how

  817. awful is it

  818. my friends.

  819. How awful

  820. that God's

  821. people would

  822. rise as

  823. one to

  824. protect the

  825. honor of

  826. this trashy

  827. false god

  828. Baal.

  829. When all

  830. his shrines

  831. lie in

  832. ruins.

  833. While at the

  834. very same

  835. moment rejecting

  836. and treating

  837. with utter

  838. contempt

  839. the only

  840. true God

  841. who'd

  842. proved his

  843. love for

  844. them over

  845. and over

  846. and over

  847. again and

  848. who'd

  849. shown his

  850. power to

  851. them.

  852. So Gideon

  853. cleans up

  854. his own

  855. backyard and

  856. then the

  857. Lord is

  858. ready to

  859. turbocharge

  860. him for

  861. his role

  862. as saviour.

  863. 633

  864. through to

  865. chapter 7

  866. verse 25.

  867. So verse

  868. 33 of

  869. chapter 6

  870. this is the

  871. stuff we

  872. haven't read

  873. so I'm

  874. not going

  875. to be able

  876. to read

  877. it all.

  878. I'll just

  879. touch down

  880. on a

  881. couple of

  882. things.

  883. Verse 33

  884. Now all

  885. the Midianites

  886. and the

  887. Amalekites

  888. and the

  889. people of

  890. the east

  891. came together

  892. and they

  893. crossed the

  894. Jordan and

  895. camped in

  896. the valley

  897. of Jezreel.

  898. It's on

  899. again for

  900. the eighth

  901. year in

  902. a row.

  903. The big

  904. invasion's

  905. on.

  906. 135,000

  907. mobile

  908. troops

  909. coming to

  910. just

  911. strip the

  912. land again.

  913. And at

  914. that point

  915. the Lord

  916. the next

  917. verse gave

  918. Gideon a

  919. special

  920. enabling.

  921. The spirit

  922. of the

  923. Lord clothed

  924. Gideon.

  925. Actually in

  926. the Hebrew

  927. it's the

  928. other way

  929. around.

  930. It's the

  931. spirit clothed

  932. himself with

  933. Gideon.

  934. There's a

  935. different emphasis

  936. there.

  937. Because the

  938. focus is on

  939. the spirit.

  940. But either

  941. way Gideon

  942. gets a

  943. special

  944. enabling.

  945. And with

  946. that Gideon

  947. steps out in

  948. faith again.

  949. And rallies

  950. God's people

  951. to destroy

  952. their enemies

  953. so they might

  954. enjoy God's

  955. place, the

  956. promised land

  957. once again.

  958. But remember

  959. who Gideon has

  960. to work with.

  961. This is only

  962. at best a

  963. militia that

  964. he's going to

  965. rally.

  966. These are only

  967. farmers.

  968. farmers.

  969. They're not

  970. trained troops.

  971. But they're

  972. facing a

  973. massive,

  974. heavily armed,

  975. organized army.

  976. And so perhaps

  977. it's not surprising

  978. that poor old

  979. Gideon is still

  980. saying if,

  981. if you look at

  982. verse 36

  983. onwards,

  984. if you will

  985. save Israel.

  986. And with that

  987. then he launches

  988. into this very

  989. familiar passage

  990. of the fleece,

  991. putting out the

  992. fleeces before

  993. the Lord.

  994. And it's his

  995. sinking into

  996. fear and

  997. distrust once

  998. again that

  999. leads Gideon

  1000. to put

  1001. outrageous

  1002. demands on

  1003. the Lord.

  1004. He's already

  1005. had assurance

  1006. after assurance

  1007. after assurance

  1008. and proof

  1009. after proof

  1010. after proof.

  1011. And what do we

  1012. find Gideon

  1013. doing again?

  1014. Well, show me

  1015. Lord, prove it

  1016. to me.

  1017. Gideon's fleece

  1018. is actually

  1019. evidence of

  1020. faithlessness.

  1021. He already

  1022. had God's

  1023. word.

  1024. He already

  1025. had multiple

  1026. practical

  1027. assurances.

  1028. But Gideon

  1029. can't trust

  1030. the Lord.

  1031. He can't

  1032. take his

  1033. word at

  1034. face value.

  1035. He still

  1036. wants more

  1037. proof.

  1038. And the

  1039. amazing thing

  1040. is that God

  1041. just doesn't

  1042. zap him.

  1043. But God

  1044. actually

  1045. obliges

  1046. and patiently

  1047. nurtures and

  1048. nudges Gideon

  1049. through his

  1050. unbelief.

  1051. And to

  1052. again to

  1053. chapter 7,

  1054. the well-known

  1055. detail of how

  1056. the Lord

  1057. reduced Gideon's

  1058. forces to

  1059. 300.

  1060. Now, it's

  1061. always been

  1062. said when

  1063. preachers

  1064. preach in

  1065. this, it's a

  1066. 300-strong

  1067. force of

  1068. crack troops.

  1069. Well, I think

  1070. that's rubbish.

  1071. The point is

  1072. here that 300

  1073. is laughable

  1074. going up against

  1075. an organized

  1076. army.

  1077. Now, when you

  1078. do the statistics

  1079. on this

  1080. organized army,

  1081. 135,000,

  1082. it would have

  1083. taken about

  1084. 100 football

  1085. fields to

  1086. camp them.

  1087. If there

  1088. was 50

  1089. soldiers to

  1090. every campfire,

  1091. then there

  1092. would have

  1093. been something

  1094. like 270

  1095. campfires.

  1096. Now, this

  1097. was a

  1098. sizable force

  1099. over about

  1100. 200 hectares,

  1101. not to mention

  1102. all the camels

  1103. and all the

  1104. support people

  1105. that would

  1106. have been

  1107. around about

  1108. them.

  1109. So the

  1110. point here

  1111. is that a

  1112. force of

  1113. 300 is

  1114. just absolutely,

  1115. humanly speaking,

  1116. laughable,

  1117. ridiculous.

  1118. wouldn't

  1119. matter how

  1120. cracked the

  1121. troops were.

  1122. You know,

  1123. it's just a

  1124. joke in

  1125. military terms.

  1126. It's not

  1127. Gideon's

  1128. strategy or

  1129. brilliant

  1130. leadership which

  1131. won the

  1132. battle, but

  1133. the Lord.

  1134. Look at

  1135. verse 2.

  1136. The Lord

  1137. said to

  1138. Gideon,

  1139. the people

  1140. with you

  1141. are too

  1142. many for

  1143. me to

  1144. give the

  1145. Midianites

  1146. into their

  1147. hand,

  1148. lest Israel

  1149. boast over

  1150. me,

  1151. saying,

  1152. my own

  1153. hand to

  1154. save me.

  1155. There's

  1156. what the

  1157. Lord's

  1158. about.

  1159. He's not

  1160. filtering them

  1161. out just

  1162. to get the

  1163. best troops.

  1164. He's

  1165. filtering them

  1166. out so

  1167. it's a

  1168. ridiculously

  1169. small group

  1170. that has

  1171. to be a

  1172. victory from

  1173. the Lord.

  1174. And here's

  1175. the point,

  1176. you see.

  1177. As their

  1178. covenant

  1179. keeping God,

  1180. the one who's

  1181. promised to

  1182. care for

  1183. them,

  1184. then he

  1185. will be

  1186. their

  1187. deliverer.

  1188. those two

  1189. things go

  1190. hand in

  1191. hand.

  1192. And God's

  1193. people need

  1194. to learn

  1195. that.

  1196. So he's

  1197. turbocharged

  1198. for the

  1199. task.

  1200. The task

  1201. is accomplished

  1202. but the

  1203. final stage

  1204. in Gideon's

  1205. life,

  1206. Gideon

  1207. becomes part

  1208. of the

  1209. problem

  1210. again.

  1211. Chapter

  1212. 8,

  1213. verses 1

  1214. through to

  1215. 32.

  1216. Now this

  1217. is a

  1218. really,

  1219. really sort

  1220. of depressing

  1221. chapter.

  1222. The story

  1223. of Gideon

  1224. ends

  1225. tragically

  1226. because

  1227. Gideon

  1228. goes rogue.

  1229. Once again,

  1230. Gideon's

  1231. enemy within

  1232. rises up

  1233. to cause

  1234. the same

  1235. sort of

  1236. utter

  1237. destruction

  1238. in Gideon

  1239. as he

  1240. is just

  1241. with God's

  1242. hand

  1243. inflicted

  1244. on the

  1245. Midianites.

  1246. And again,

  1247. we get this

  1248. wonderful

  1249. contrast,

  1250. strong

  1251. contrast.

  1252. So there's

  1253. two or

  1254. three episodes

  1255. in chapter

  1256. 8,

  1257. and I'll

  1258. have to

  1259. leave you

  1260. to read

  1261. the details

  1262. for yourself,

  1263. but two

  1264. or three

  1265. episodes

  1266. in chapter

  1267. 8 that

  1268. show how

  1269. far Gideon

  1270. falls again

  1271. as he

  1272. gives way

  1273. to his

  1274. own

  1275. unbelief

  1276. and

  1277. faithlessness.

  1278. First

  1279. up,

  1280. he goes

  1281. well beyond

  1282. God's

  1283. mission

  1284. of

  1285. delivering

  1286. God's

  1287. people.

  1288. So

  1289. 18 to

  1290. 21,

  1291. Gideon

  1292. first appears

  1293. really heroic

  1294. in that not

  1295. only does

  1296. he pursue

  1297. the Midianites

  1298. to the

  1299. borders of

  1300. the promised

  1301. land,

  1302. he pursues

  1303. them for

  1304. days east

  1305. along the

  1306. caravan routes.

  1307. And he

  1308. finally falls

  1309. upon the

  1310. last sort

  1311. of sizable

  1312. detachment

  1313. of forces,

  1314. about 15,000,

  1315. another surprise

  1316. attack,

  1317. and he

  1318. completely

  1319. destroys

  1320. them,

  1321. takes their

  1322. remaining

  1323. commanders,

  1324. their remaining

  1325. kings captive

  1326. and kills

  1327. them.

  1328. And then we

  1329. discover something

  1330. that hits us

  1331. like a ton of

  1332. bricks left

  1333. field.

  1334. what we

  1335. discover is

  1336. that Gideon's

  1337. motives in

  1338. doing that

  1339. were very,

  1340. very mixed.

  1341. He had

  1342. gone well

  1343. beyond God's

  1344. brief and

  1345. it turns out

  1346. that he is

  1347. pursuing these

  1348. kings because

  1349. at some other

  1350. point in time

  1351. they had taken

  1352. captive his

  1353. sons and

  1354. killed them.

  1355. Gideon was

  1356. on a

  1357. revenge trip

  1358. and we're

  1359. not told

  1360. how,

  1361. where his

  1362. motives were,

  1363. but at

  1364. least his

  1365. motives were

  1366. mixed.

  1367. He was

  1368. using his

  1369. position and

  1370. his commission

  1371. to exact

  1372. revenge on

  1373. those who

  1374. had killed

  1375. his sons.

  1376. along the

  1377. way,

  1378. there's two

  1379. cities,

  1380. two villages

  1381. who refused

  1382. to give

  1383. Gideon help.

  1384. His troops

  1385. had sort of

  1386. taken off,

  1387. they hadn't

  1388. been properly

  1389. supplied,

  1390. they needed

  1391. some food.

  1392. And they

  1393. asked these

  1394. two villages

  1395. to help,

  1396. feed my

  1397. troops.

  1398. And they

  1399. refused.

  1400. Now the

  1401. interesting point

  1402. is that they

  1403. refused because

  1404. they were

  1405. fearful,

  1406. fearful of

  1407. reprisals from

  1408. the Midianites,

  1409. fearful that

  1410. Gideon wouldn't

  1411. be able to

  1412. catch these

  1413. kings and

  1414. finally dispatch

  1415. them and

  1416. that there

  1417. might be a

  1418. counterattack.

  1419. But the

  1420. point is here

  1421. they were

  1422. fearful.

  1423. But Gideon,

  1424. who had

  1425. received such

  1426. gracious and

  1427. gentle treatment

  1428. from the

  1429. Lord through

  1430. his fears,

  1431. wasn't able to

  1432. extend grace

  1433. to those who

  1434. were fearful.

  1435. And he had

  1436. them killed,

  1437. every one of

  1438. them,

  1439. tortured them

  1440. and killed

  1441. them.

  1442. And so we

  1443. see something

  1444. really wrong

  1445. about this

  1446. man,

  1447. the man who

  1448. had received

  1449. such grace,

  1450. been able to,

  1451. unable to

  1452. extend grace

  1453. in an

  1454. identical

  1455. situation.

  1456. And the

  1457. third episode,

  1458. verses 22

  1459. to 33,

  1460. let me try

  1461. out again,

  1462. 22 to 32,

  1463. Gideon really

  1464. goes rogue.

  1465. This is worst

  1466. of all,

  1467. because Gideon

  1468. appears,

  1469. started to

  1470. believe that he

  1471. was somebody

  1472. special.

  1473. Initially the

  1474. people come and

  1475. say, look, we

  1476. want you to be

  1477. our king, you're

  1478. such a great

  1479. deliverer.

  1480. And Gideon

  1481. says, no,

  1482. no, no, no,

  1483. no, no, no,

  1484. no, no,

  1485. that's not

  1486. right.

  1487. God is your

  1488. king.

  1489. But from that

  1490. point on,

  1491. Gideon starts to

  1492. live like an

  1493. oriental king.

  1494. he's got a

  1495. massive

  1496. harem.

  1497. That's lots

  1498. of girls,

  1499. for those who

  1500. don't know

  1501. what the

  1502. word is.

  1503. And he

  1504. rejects the

  1505. Lord once

  1506. again.

  1507. And he

  1508. leads his

  1509. people into

  1510. idolatry.

  1511. what a

  1512. position to

  1513. be in.

  1514. To say,

  1515. and this

  1516. particularly

  1517. resonated with

  1518. me, to

  1519. be a leader

  1520. of God's

  1521. people and

  1522. actually lead

  1523. them into

  1524. idolatry, lead

  1525. them away from

  1526. the Lord.

  1527. And that's

  1528. what Gideon

  1529. did.

  1530. It's a

  1531. very pathetic

  1532. story.

  1533. in lots

  1534. of ways.

  1535. Gideon

  1536. showed glimpses

  1537. of great

  1538. faith, but

  1539. generally

  1540. speaking, he

  1541. finished his

  1542. life as he

  1543. started it.

  1544. Convinced that

  1545. security, that

  1546. satisfaction in

  1547. the good life

  1548. was to be

  1549. found in his

  1550. own efforts and

  1551. apart from the

  1552. Lord.

  1553. So, why are we

  1554. shown this very

  1555. ordinary leader?

  1556. Because it

  1557. highlights a

  1558. very extraordinary

  1559. God.

  1560. God's

  1561. grace.

  1562. I've just

  1563. about run

  1564. out of time,

  1565. so I'm

  1566. going to

  1567. abbreviate what

  1568. I've got left

  1569. here.

  1570. The constant in

  1571. this story is

  1572. God's grace.

  1573. That's the

  1574. constant throughout

  1575. this story.

  1576. God's

  1577. patience, his

  1578. generosity, his

  1579. faithfulness, his

  1580. mercy, and most

  1581. of all, his

  1582. deliverance to

  1583. people who

  1584. didn't deserve

  1585. it.

  1586. God's

  1587. God's

  1588. love.

  1589. Because that is

  1590. what the

  1591. covenant-keeping

  1592. God does.

  1593. He delivers his

  1594. covenant people,

  1595. even when they

  1596. don't deserve it,

  1597. and especially

  1598. when they don't

  1599. deserve it.

  1600. He delivers us

  1601. in spite of

  1602. ourselves, not

  1603. because of

  1604. ourselves.

  1605. God rescues

  1606. nobodies.

  1607. That is, his

  1608. undeserving,

  1609. needy people.

  1610. See, when we

  1611. look at this

  1612. story, as we

  1613. see every time

  1614. we look at a

  1615. story in the

  1616. Old Testament,

  1617. it appears that

  1618. what God's

  1619. people need

  1620. rescuing from is

  1621. this external

  1622. enemy.

  1623. But ultimately,

  1624. what God's

  1625. people need

  1626. rescuing from is

  1627. symbolized and

  1628. personified in

  1629. Gideon.

  1630. We need

  1631. rescuing from

  1632. their internal

  1633. enemy.

  1634. It's that

  1635. internal enemy,

  1636. that sinful,

  1637. rebellious heart.

  1638. It's that

  1639. which robs us

  1640. of the blessings

  1641. of relationship

  1642. with God.

  1643. And it's that

  1644. very thing that

  1645. the Lord actually

  1646. longs for us to

  1647. enjoy.

  1648. So, we've got

  1649. this picture of

  1650. God moving

  1651. towards us,

  1652. Jehovah

  1653. Shalom.

  1654. He's moving

  1655. towards us,

  1656. wanting us to

  1657. have peace and

  1658. rest and blessing

  1659. in the good

  1660. life, and

  1661. we're busy

  1662. running away

  1663. from him or

  1664. coming back

  1665. at war with

  1666. him.

  1667. God uses

  1668. suffering simply

  1669. as the means of

  1670. exposing the

  1671. enemy within,

  1672. their unruly

  1673. hearts.

  1674. And so,

  1675. what God's

  1676. people really

  1677. need was a

  1678. king who

  1679. would rule

  1680. over them and

  1681. subdue them so

  1682. that they

  1683. live for God's

  1684. glory and

  1685. honor rather

  1686. than for

  1687. self.

  1688. And the

  1689. story of

  1690. Gideon models

  1691. God's salvation.

  1692. God honors

  1693. those who

  1694. dishonor him

  1695. so terribly.

  1696. God's people

  1697. constantly go to

  1698. war with God,

  1699. but God

  1700. keeps moving

  1701. towards them.

  1702. He moves

  1703. towards them

  1704. through his

  1705. prophet in

  1706. this story

  1707. and through

  1708. his word to

  1709. help them

  1710. understand their

  1711. hopelessness,

  1712. and then he

  1713. establishes peace

  1714. as Jehovah

  1715. Shalom.

  1716. My friends,

  1717. the ultimate

  1718. display of that

  1719. model is the

  1720. Lord Jesus

  1721. Christ,

  1722. because he is

  1723. God's best

  1724. prophet,

  1725. we're told,

  1726. in Hebrews.

  1727. He has

  1728. spoken most

  1729. clearly to

  1730. us through

  1731. Jesus.

  1732. It's through

  1733. the words of

  1734. Jesus that we

  1735. understand our

  1736. hopelessness and

  1737. our helplessness,

  1738. and we were

  1739. helped to take

  1740. ownership of our

  1741. sins and call

  1742. out for mercy.

  1743. And Jesus is

  1744. also God's

  1745. perfect king,

  1746. who comes to

  1747. us and by his

  1748. spirit subdues

  1749. our unruly

  1750. hearts and

  1751. rules us with

  1752. such strength

  1753. and gentleness

  1754. that our

  1755. hearts overflow

  1756. with new

  1757. desires for the

  1758. Lord, new

  1759. attitudes of

  1760. worship, new

  1761. determination to

  1762. tear down the

  1763. internal idols.

  1764. And God

  1765. rescues with

  1766. those who are

  1767. nothing in the

  1768. eyes of the

  1769. world.

  1770. Gideon was

  1771. from an

  1772. obscure clan,

  1773. the smallest

  1774. tribe.

  1775. And at

  1776. first glance he

  1777. appeared hopelessly

  1778. inadequate as a

  1779. savior.

  1780. Yet the Lord

  1781. used him to

  1782. deliver his

  1783. people against

  1784. overwhelming odds.

  1785. He delivered his

  1786. people from an

  1787. enemy so powerful

  1788. that it kept

  1789. God's people in

  1790. fear at best,

  1791. and at worst

  1792. actually led to

  1793. their destruction.

  1794. And again,

  1795. you see,

  1796. we've got a

  1797. wonderful picture

  1798. of Jesus,

  1799. who,

  1800. according to

  1801. Isaiah,

  1802. had nothing to

  1803. attract people to.

  1804. And yet,

  1805. takes on an

  1806. enemy far,

  1807. far more

  1808. awful and

  1809. superior than

  1810. anything Gideon

  1811. faced.

  1812. The power of

  1813. Satan himself,

  1814. and the fear of

  1815. death that we're

  1816. held in,

  1817. and the ultimate

  1818. destruction of

  1819. death that we're

  1820. headed to.

  1821. And Jesus

  1822. defeats that

  1823. enemy against,

  1824. delivers us

  1825. against overwhelming

  1826. odds.

  1827. Why?

  1828. For the very

  1829. same reason he's

  1830. delivered his

  1831. people in.

  1832. So that we

  1833. might honor him

  1834. as our God

  1835. and King.

  1836. That we might

  1837. fear him.

  1838. That we might

  1839. desire him.

  1840. That we might

  1841. honor him.

  1842. That we might

  1843. obey him.

  1844. That we might

  1845. delight to live

  1846. under his

  1847. rule.

  1848. That we might

  1849. overflow in

  1850. thankfulness to

  1851. him.

  1852. That we might

  1853. just say,

  1854. you are my

  1855. God.

  1856. And I'm so

  1857. thankful that

  1858. you are Jehovah

  1859. Shalom.

  1860. Let me pray.

  1861. Lord, we

  1862. see ourselves so

  1863. easily in the

  1864. story of Gideon

  1865. at so many

  1866. points.

  1867. And we

  1868. thank you,

  1869. Lord, that

  1870. you've not

  1871. just left us

  1872. to ourselves.

  1873. In fact, you've

  1874. never left us to

  1875. ourselves, but you

  1876. constantly move

  1877. towards us because

1878. you want to be to

  1879. us.

  1880. Jehovah Shalom.

  1881. Even though,

  1882. Lord, we are

  1883. constantly breaking

  1884. out in war

  1885. against you.

  1886. Lord, forgive us,

  1887. we pray.

  1888. And make the

  1889. desire of our

  1890. hearts simply to

  1891. live for you

  1892. with great

  1893. delight and

  1894. determination.

  1895. In Jesus' name I

  1896. pray.

  1897. Amen.

  1898. I do

  1899. apologise for

  1900. being long

  1901. winded again.

  1902. Thank you.
