  1. We're going to look at Judges again.

  2. We're back into Judges for three weeks over the holiday period.

  3. Judges is both incredibly depressing and also incredibly encouraging.

  4. So it's depressing in the sense that we just see over and over again the rebellion of God's people.

  5. And the thing about it is it's pathetically unoriginal.

  6. But it inevitably brings God's people to their knees as a nation.

  7. On the other hand it's encouraging because we observe the Lord's dealings with his people.

  8. And as our sin is pathetically unoriginal, then God's dealings with his people is endlessly resourceful.

  9. It's unexpected and displays repeatedly God's faithfulness and grace, which is the dominant thing we see through this book of Judges.

  10. The story of Deborah and Barak is the fourth cycle in the story.

  11. It happens two generations later if we take, and there's good reason to do so, if we take 40 years as a generation rather than literally 40 years.

  12. Regardless of that, the story of Deborah and Barak is an intriguing drama.

  13. And what we have in chapter 4 and 5 is the same story told in two very, very different ways.

  14. So chapter 4 is a very measured matter-of-fact historical narrative, almost devoid of emotion.

  15. And then chapter 5, it's hard to think of how it could be even more different than it is.

  16. We've got extravagant picture language, extravagant descriptions.

  17. We've got brutal pictures in chapter 5 that aren't there in chapter 4.

  18. And chapter 5, as it were, puts the flesh on the factual skeleton of chapter 4.

  19. And then among all that, then there are twists and turns and subplots.

  20. And what those things do is they suck us into the world of illusion.

  21. A world of illusion that had trapped God's people in Deborah's day.

  22. And it makes us think about what's really real.

  23. The characters, likewise.

  24. We meet characters and they invite us to form conclusions.

  25. But then no sooner do we start to form a conclusion than we get told that our conclusion probably is wrong.

  26. And that conclusion is actually an illusion.

  27. And again, making us as God's people today question what's really real for us.

  28. And I'm going to use a line this morning repeatedly I picked up a couple of weeks ago at the conference.

  29. When it comes to this sort of stuff, nothing is as it seems.

  30. Nothing is as it seems for God's people in God's world.

  31. So let's dive into the text and ask the question, who is the enemy in this story?

  32. Who is the enemy or the villain?

  33. And the obvious option would be King Jebin and his military commander Sisera.

  34. Now what we know about Jebin is he was a Syrian king, reigned at Hazor, the largest city in the region.

  35. And so most probably Jebin was the king of a military coalition of Canaanites.

  36. Sisera was the commander, a very powerful coalition army.

  37. And as an army with the latest, the very, very latest technology, iron chariots.

  38. In other words, the story is telling us this is such a formidable military force that it's beyond conception that it could be defeated by anything the Israelites could throw up against it.

  39. Huge tactical imbalance.

  40. Huge military superiority to the Canaanites.

  41. And added to that, there was deep hatred towards these northern tribes of Israel because just over 100 years earlier, when Joshua occupied the land, Hazor was the only city that Joshua and his people burned to the ground.

  42. It was totally decimated as a sort of public humiliation of the Canaanites.

  43. Eventually it was rebuilt and became really powerful and influential again.

  44. There's a lot of scores to settle here and perhaps that explains why this particular period of time was so brutal under Sisera.

  45. Perhaps they're the enemy because they're just ravaging through the country seeking revenge for something that happened 100 years ago.

  46. And it was a severe revenge.

  47. But things aren't as they seem.

  48. Because the reality is that God's people are their own worst enemy.

  49. The cruelty of Sisera caused them to beg God for deliverance.

  50. But as you read the story there, something sort of just slips through.

  51. It took them 20 years to beg for deliverance.

  52. To get to the point of desperation and turning back to God.

  53. That's a long time.

  54. A long time to decide, well, okay, look, all the other options have gone.

  55. Now we've got, in a sense, nothing left but to go back to God.

  56. Once again, you see, the real enemy was their bad hearts.

  57. Look at verse 1 again.

  58. We've got this repeated cycle.

  59. And the people of Israel again, again, did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

  60. If we look over to chapter 5, verse 8, and we get the detail of that statement.

  61. Remember I said chapter 5 comes with all the emotion and the depth and the flesh.

  62. Well, chapter 5, verse 8 puts it like this.

  63. When new gods were chosen.

  64. When new gods were chosen.

  65. Then war was in the gates.

  66. So, what's described in a sort of formal way in chapter 4, verse 1, we get the reality of it.

  67. Chapter 5, verse 8.

  68. This people of God had abandoned their covenant God.

  69. The God who had brought them to himself, who had loved them, who had made them a special people, who had brought them into his special promised land.

  70. They had just turned around and abandoned him.

  71. Even while they were in the place that God meant for them, they abandoned him.

  72. And decided to choose to pursue the good life through worshipping local Canaanite gods.

  73. And that was a particularly vile expression of worship that involved child sacrifice and engaging with temple prostitutes, male and female.

  74. And the idea was that if you had regular sex with them, then your ground would grow good crops and you would be secure and your family would flourish.

  75. I mean, it wasn't just as if it was a little bit to the left of center.

  76. It was a huge choice they made to turn their back on the Lord.

  77. And the direct consequence, look at verse 2.

  78. Again, we see something very, very strong in verse 2.

  79. And the Lord sold them into the hand of King Jebon of Canaan.

  80. The word there is a word for God signing a contract.

  81. God actually signed a contract with this Canaanite king for the punishment of his people.

  82. It's a very formal statement.

  83. And you can't help thinking that.

  84. Once that contract has been signed, then in a sense what happens in history is just coincidental.

  85. Because we see the unseen hand of God at work in that word.

  86. And that fits with Judges chapter 3.

    Judges 3 chapter mention

  87. Flip back to chapter 3 verse 1.

  88. And something that I think we often get overlooked in Judges.

  89. Because it says in chapter 3 verse 1.

  90. Now these are the nations that the Lord left.

  91. Okay, the unseen hand of God.

  92. The Lord left.

  93. Why?

  94. To test Israel by them.

  95. And jump down to verse 4.

  96. They were, at least among them the Canaanites.

  97. Verse 4.

  98. They were for the testing of Israel to know whether Israel would obey the commandments of the Lord,

  99. which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

  100. In the very next verse.

  101. So the people of Israel lived among the Canaanites.

  102. Verse 6.

  103. Their daughters they took to themselves for wives,

  104. and their own daughters they gave to their sons and served their gods.

  105. The Canaanites were told, again,

  106. the unseen hand of God was that were there to test the faithfulness of his people.

  107. And guess what?

  108. They failed spectacularly.

  109. Instead of being a distinctive reflection of Yahweh, their covenant God,

  110. to the Canaanites out there,

  111. they became a distinctive reflection of the Canaanites to Yahweh up there.

  112. They had become enslaved within the Promised Land.

  113. In God's own place, they had become enslaved.

  114. If you look again at chapter 5, verse 6 and 7,

  115. and we see something of what that enslavement looked like,

  116. it's hard to know exactly what these verses mean,

  117. but it seems to be that ordinary life, as it was known,

  118. had ceased to be.

  119. The whole system had collapsed

  120. and become immobile.

  121. Rather than the Canaanites producing the good life,

  122. it had just led them in to death and destruction as a nation.

  123. How sad is that?

  124. And here's another illusion.

  125. Their bad hearts

  126. deceived them into a situation

  127. where there was nothing more

  128. than an illusion of intimacy with God.

  129. Yes, we're God's people.

  130. We're in God's special place, the Promised Land.

  131. But it was just an illusion

  132. of intimacy with God.

  133. Trapped by their own hearts.

  134. It's not Cicera

  135. they most need deliverance from,

  136. but their bad hearts.

  137. Again, you see,

  138. things are not as they seem.

  139. Okay, let's meet the other characters

  140. in the drama

  141. and ask then, as Marty asked,

  142. who's the saviour?

  143. Who's the hero?

  144. And we get three contenders.

  145. The most obvious one, I think, is Deborah,

  146. given that she holds the title to this.

  147. And Deborah, we see in chapter 4,

  148. well, she just pops up.

  149. Now, you might expect

  150. if she's the soon-to-be heroine,

  151. then we might get some sort of special introduction.

  152. But no, Deborah just appears.

  153. But then again,

  154. as soon as we start to think about Deborah,

  155. then she just appears,

  156. but then she's really, really unique

  157. in her culture.

  158. She's a prophetess and judge.

  159. In other words,

  160. Deborah was an important social

  161. and religious leader

  162. in the nation.

  163. And I think it's interesting

  164. that, again,

  165. her cultural uniqueness,

  166. her formidable character,

  167. is highlighted by this contrast.

  168. Her husband's mentioned,

  169. but just stays in the background.

  170. She's presented as a formidable,

  171. godly woman,

  172. called into a very, very unusual role

  173. by the Lord.

  174. And I think, by contrast, cleverly,

  175. the writer's saying,

  176. well, okay,

  177. if we look at Deborah,

  178. we're actually being told something

  179. about the men

  180. who are behind Deborah.

  181. She exposes, in a sense,

  182. the ineptitude,

  183. the failure of the men

  184. to fulfill their role

  185. as godly leaders.

  186. So Deborah is presented

  187. as both a unique,

  188. formidable servant of the Lord,

  189. but it's also saying much more

  190. to us than just about Deborah.

  191. Anyway, verse 4 and 5,

  192. a deputation comes to Deborah

  193. to get her advice

  194. on what to do

  195. in response to their suffering.

  196. Again, you see,

  197. an action that would normally be,

  198. brings shame to the men.

  199. To be advised by a woman

  200. in the culture of the day

  201. was shameful in the extreme.

  202. But they're so desperate,

  203. they don't seem to even realize that.

  204. They come to Deborah

  205. seeking her advice.

  206. And Deborah

  207. doesn't take a backward step.

  208. She tasks Barak

  209. quite probably

  210. an existing local

  211. resistance unit,

  212. militia commander

  213. or something like that.

  214. Anyway,

  215. he's tasked with raising

  216. a force of 10,000 fighters

  217. to take on Sisera.

  218. And they were to deploy

  219. to the foothills

  220. of Mount Tabor,

  221. a 140-meter hill

  222. at the north end

  223. of the Esdralen Valley.

  224. So they're to sit up there

  225. and await the order

  226. to attack.

  227. Now,

  228. militarily,

  229. we just need to feel for Barak.

  230. Because I think militarily,

  231. this would have felt

  232. like a suicide mission.

  233. At best,

  234. if you look at chapter 5,

  235. verse 8,

  236. again,

  237. we get another little clue.

  238. The end of verse 8,

  239. was shield or spear

  240. to be seen among

  241. the 40,000 in Israel?

  242. I think what that's telling us

  243. is that because the Canaanites

  244. had such a ruthless

  245. subjection of the land

  246. that Barak's 10,000 men,

  247. at best,

  248. were only very,

  249. very lightly armed.

  250. They couldn't hide

  251. heavy weapons

  252. from the Canaanites.

  253. So at best,

  254. they probably just had swords,

  255. maybe a few daggers,

  256. but most likely,

  257. crude farm implements

  258. that were sort of

  259. commandeered for weapons.

  260. And this up against

  261. the most mechanized army

  262. in the world at the time.

  263. 900 chariots,

  264. a rapid deployment

  265. mobile strike force.

  266. They had no heavy weapons

  267. to engage the chariots.

  268. And most likely,

  269. very little training

  270. and probably

  271. no combat experience.

  272. Militarily, as I say,

  273. this would have felt

  274. like a suicide mission.

  275. Yet Deborah

  276. assures Barak

  277. of complete victory.

  278. Not just a possible victory

  279. or a shade of victory,

  280. but a complete victory.

  281. Confident in God's promise.

  282. And look at verse 9

  283. of chapter 4

  284. and see again

  285. how things are never

  286. as they seem.

  287. Chapter 9, verse 4,

  288. she said,

  289. I will surely go with you.

  290. I'll come back to this

  291. in a minute.

  292. Nevertheless,

  293. the road on which

  294. you are going

  295. will not lead to your glory

  296. for the Lord will

  297. sell Sisera

  298. into the hand of a woman.

  299. The Lord's got his pen

  300. out again

  301. and he's about to

  302. reverse the contract

  303. that he had written

  304. with Sisera and Jeban.

  305. And now the Lord's

  306. going to put a different

  307. contract in place.

  308. A contract that will

  309. just as surely

  310. be the undoing

  311. of Sisera.

  312. the unseen

  313. hand of God.

  314. Again,

  315. nothing is

  316. as it seems.

  317. So it appears

  318. that Deborah

  319. is going to

  320. be the hero

  321. and get the glory.

  322. But again,

  323. things are not

  324. as they first seemed.

  325. Glory,

  326. verse 9,

  327. glory will go

  328. to a woman.

  329. It doesn't actually say

  330. glory will come to me,

  331. Deborah.

  332. It just says glory

  333. will go to a woman.

  334. And so we're left

  335. hanging at that point

  336. in the story.

  337. Then is Barak.

  338. He's obviously

  339. got to be a contender

  340. as well for the

  341. Saviour Award.

  342. But then we run

  343. into some trouble

  344. because his response

  345. to Deborah

  346. initially

  347. usually means

  348. that he's labeled

  349. as a faithless coward.

  350. Poor old Barak

  351. comes up for a bit

  352. of a hiding

  353. when people

  354. will consider him.

  355. And so the argument

  356. is that

  357. when Barak says,

  358. off you go

  359. and take on

  360. the Canaanites,

  361. and Barak says,

  362. well actually

  363. I'm not going to go

  364. if you won't go with me.

  365. That argument

  366. is usually that,

  367. well,

  368. Barak knows

  369. jolly well

  370. that there's going

  371. to be inevitable defeat.

  372. And so he wants

  373. Deborah there

  374. as a fall guy.

  375. He wants Deborah

  376. there to sort of

  377. blame in the event

  378. that things go

  379. pear-shaped.

  380. And then

  381. Deborah's response

  382. to him

  383. is seen to be

  384. punishment

  385. and public

  386. humiliation.

  387. Well,

  388. because you're

  389. faithless,

  390. then I'm telling you

  391. now that you won't

  392. get any glory

  393. for this.

  394. That's not actually

  395. what the Hebrew

  396. says really.

  397. There's a better

  398. alternative.

  399. And that alternative

  400. also explains

  401. why Barak

  402. is actually

  403. included

  404. in the gallery

  405. of faithful

  406. servants

  407. in Hebrews 11.

  408. And here's

  409. the alternative.

  410. I think Barak's

  411. response

  412. is meant to

  413. echo

  414. the response

  415. of Moses.

  416. Remember when

  417. Moses was set

  418. aside by the

  419. Lord to go

  420. up and rescue

  421. his people

  422. from Egypt.

  423. Moses also

  424. expressed an

  425. incredible sense

  426. of inability

  427. and caution

  428. and fear.

  429. And Moses

  430. said to the

  431. Lord,

  432. unless you

  433. go up with

  434. me,

  435. I won't go.

  436. I won't do it.

  437. And the Lord

  438. said to Moses

  439. actually,

  440. yes,

  441. I'll go with

  442. you.

  443. There's a

  444. parallel here.

  445. So I actually

  446. think Barak's

  447. statement here

  448. is actually a

  449. statement of

  450. faith,

  451. not a statement

  452. of cowardice.

  453. So Barak

  454. is actually

  455. expressing

  456. supreme

  457. confidence

  458. in the

  459. success

  460. of his

  461. task

  462. in spite

  463. of his

  464. own

  465. inability

  466. if the

  467. Lord's

  468. representative,

  469. which in

  470. this case

  471. is Deborah,

  472. goes with

  473. him as a

  474. sign that

  475. God is

  476. going with

  477. him.

  478. And then

  479. Deborah's

  480. response in

  481. the Hebrew

  482. is just a

  483. statement of

  484. God's plan,

  485. not censure.

  486. Okay,

  487. so I'm

  488. going to go

  489. up with

  490. you,

  491. but you

  492. should know

  493. this ahead

  494. of time,

  495. Barak,

  496. you should

  497. know that

  498. this mission

  499. you're setting

  500. out on

  501. will not

  502. bring glory

  503. to you.

  504. If you read

  505. in brackets

  506. in between,

  507. in fact,

  508. you will

  509. experience

  510. shame

  511. because a

  512. woman will

  513. get the

  514. credit for

  515. this particular

  516. mission that

  517. you're going

  518. to lead.

  519. Now at

  520. that point,

  521. I think we

  522. see why

  523. Barak's

  524. included in

  525. the gallery

  526. of faith

  527. in Hebrews

  528. 11,

  529. because he

  530. could have

  531. then backtracked

  532. and said,

  533. well actually,

  534. okay,

  535. second thoughts

  536. Deborah,

  537. you just

  538. stay here

  539. because I

  540. actually do

  541. really want

  542. the glory

  543. for this,

  544. so you

  545. stay here,

  546. I'll go

  547. and do,

  548. we'll reverse

  549. back,

  550. we'll re-have

  551. this conversation

  552. and you

  553. stay here

  554. and I'll

  555. go and do

  556. it,

  557. yep,

  558. and I'll

  559. get the

  560. credit.

  561. No,

  562. Barak

  563. doesn't do

  564. that,

  565. he just

  566. accepts

  567. the situation.

  568. And I

  569. think thereby

  570. displaying the

  571. sort of

  572. faith in

  573. God's

  574. promises and

  575. the type of

  576. leadership

  577. that God

  578. wanted to see

  579. among his

  580. people,

  581. a leadership

  582. that was

  583. about concern

  584. for God's

  585. glory,

  586. not his

  587. own

  588. reputation.

  589. And then

  590. moving on,

  591. verse 12

  592. through 16,

  593. the story

  594. just continues,

  595. the complete

  596. destruction of

  597. the Canaanite

  598. army and

  599. in fact,

  600. complete destruction

  601. of Canaanite

  602. domination for

  603. the next

  604. couple of

  605. hundred years,

  606. such was the

  607. size of the

  608. defeat.

  609. But again,

  610. tucked in

  611. there is that

  612. notion of

  613. things aren't

  614. as they seem.

  615. Barak actually

  616. led the

  617. army on

  618. the

  619. battlefield,

  620. actually saw

  621. the victory,

  622. but didn't

  623. get the

  624. normal benefits

  625. of such a

  626. great victory.

  627. And so we

  628. come to

  629. Jael,

  630. the third

  631. contender for

  632. heroine.

  633. Now,

  634. Jael

  635. isn't actually

  636. presented initially

  637. as a major

  638. character at all.

  639. but she

  640. becomes a key

  641. player in the

  642. story because

  643. she's the one

  644. who actually

  645. kills Sisera and

  646. actually fulfills

  647. God's promise.

  648. But again,

  649. we see another

  650. parallel through

  651. the judges,

  652. and that is

  653. Jael is very

  654. much likened to

  655. Ehud.

  656. She's a very

  657. unsavory

  658. character.

  659. Her weapons

  660. were seduction,

  661. and that's

  662. how we should

  663. read how she

  664. got Sisera into

  665. her tent.

  666. She was a

  667. seductress,

  668. smooth words,

  669. lolling him into

  670. a sense of

  671. false security.

  672. Deceit,

  673. lies,

  674. breaking every

  675. rule in the

  676. book in terms

  677. of cultural

  678. hospitality and

  679. integrity.

  680. And she

  681. lures Sisera to

  682. a horribly

  683. violent death.

  684. Every bit

  685. is jarring

  686. on us as

  687. what do you

  688. call them,

  689. run the king

  690. through.

  691. Yep.

  692. But again,

  693. you see,

  694. things are not

  695. as they seem.

  696. Jael gets the

  697. credit for

  698. killing Sisera,

  699. but if you

  700. look at

  701. chapter 5,

  702. verse 24

  703. through 27,

  704. she gets the

  705. credit for

  706. killing Sisera,

  707. but she

  708. doesn't get the

  709. credit for

  710. delivering God's

  711. people.

  712. Look at

  713. chapter 5,

  714. verse 24

  715. to 27,

  716. and it's

  717. graphic and

  718. it's gruesome.

  719. Most blessed

  720. of women be

  721. jailed.

  722. Now how can

  723. somebody like

  724. that be called

  725. most blessed

  726. of women?

  727. The wife of

  728. Heber,

  729. the Kenite,

  730. of tent-dwelling

  731. women,

  732. most blessed.

  733. He asked

  734. water and she

  735. gave him milk.

  736. Deception.

  737. She brought

  738. him curds

  739. and a

  740. nobles'

  741. bowl.

  742. Seduction.

  743. She sent

  744. her hand

  745. to the

  746. tent peg

  747. and her

  748. right hand

  749. to the

  750. workman's

  751. mallet.

  752. This is

  753. just gruesome.

  754. She struck

  755. Sisera.

  756. She crushed

  757. his head.

  758. This has

  759. been spun

  760. out for us.

  761. We're meant

  762. to feel

  763. every gory

  764. detail.

  765. It's like

  766. the old-fashioned

  767. slow-mo.

  768. She shattered

  769. and pierced

  770. his temple.

  771. Between her

  772. feet he sank.

  773. He fell.

  774. He lay

  775. still.

  776. Between her

  777. feet he sank.

  778. He fell.

  779. He says it

  780. for a third

  781. time.

  782. Where he sank,

  783. there he fell.

  784. Dead.

  785. Dead.

  786. Pretty blood

  787. Thursday account,

  788. isn't it?

  789. jail.

  790. Jail,

  791. however,

  792. is only

  793. significant

  794. in that,

  795. like Ehud,

  796. she delivers

  797. the decisive

  798. blow by

  799. which God

  800. completes the

  801. deliverance

  802. of his

  803. people.

  804. And it

  805. has to be

  806. like that

  807. because the

  808. real

  809. deliverer

  810. is God.

  811. God,

  812. the real

  813. deliverer is

  814. God.

  815. It's totally

  816. clear when we

  817. now move into

  818. Deborah's song,

  819. it's totally

  820. clear that

  821. Deborah doesn't

  822. think for a

  823. moment that

  824. she's front and

  825. center in this

  826. great deliverance.

  827. Deborah is

  828. singing God's

  829. praises because

  830. she knows that

  831. God was the

  832. great deliverer.

  833. Chapter 5,

  834. verse 2,

  835. she recognizes

  836. there that

  837. God's people

  838. play their

  839. part,

  840. that the

  841. leaders took

  842. the lead in

  843. Israel,

  844. the people

  845. offered

  846. themselves

  847. willingly.

  848. Bless the

  849. Lord.

  850. So the

  851. Lord used

  852. his sinful

  853. people in

  854. this great

  855. outcome.

  856. The people

  857. were sort

  858. of rallying

  859. to restore

  860. the honor

  861. of God

  862. among his

  863. own people.

  864. But even

  865. then there's

  866. illusion and

  867. things are

  868. not as

  869. we seem

  870. because if

  871. you look at

  872. chapter 5,

  873. verse 16,

  874. through to 18,

  875. and verse 23,

  876. not all

  877. God's people

  878. were prepared

  879. to fight

  880. for God's

  881. honor.

  882. So not all

  883. of God's

  884. people were

  885. so desperate

  886. to rise up

  887. against the

  888. Canaanites

  889. and restore

  890. God's honor.

  891. Some of them

  892. actually stayed

  893. at home.

  894. Some of them

  895. chose safety

  896. and comfort

  897. over God's

  898. honor.

  899. So again,

  900. any illusion,

  901. any thought

  902. that there's

  903. unity across

  904. God's people

  905. is just that,

  906. an illusion.

  907. Some chose

  908. their own

  909. comfort over

  910. God's honor.

  911. But look at

  912. verse 4 and

  913. 5 of

  914. chapter 5.

  915. It was the

  916. Lord who

  917. orchestrated

  918. the Canaanite

  919. defeat using

  920. an unseasonal

  921. thunderstorm,

  922. it would appear.

  923. A thunderstorm

  924. which turned

  925. the normally

  926. hard,

  927. dry,

  928. flat plains,

  929. highly suitable

  930. for a highly

  931. mobile strike

  932. force of

  933. chariots,

  934. turning that

  935. into a

  936. sort of

  937. buggy

  938. quagmire.

  939. Imagine 900

  940. iron chariots

  941. and probably

  942. at least two

  943. if not four

  944. horses per

  945. chariot.

  946. I mean,

  947. it would

  948. just have

  949. turned into

  950. a mud pie.

  951. But importantly

  952. you see,

  953. the unseen

  954. hand of

  955. God in

  956. this

  957. unseasonal

  958. thunderstorm

  959. completely

  960. reverses the

  961. strategic

  962. imbalance.

  963. The

  964. assets of

  965. a 900

  966. strong

  967. rapid

  968. deployment

  969. force now

  970. becomes a

  971. liability.

  972. And the

  973. liability of

  974. only 10,000

  975. lightly armed

  976. troops hiding

  977. behind the

  978. trees on

  979. the hillside

  980. now becomes

  981. strategic

  982. advantage.

  983. And so

  984. there's total

  985. victory.

  986. And Deborah

  987. will settle

  988. for nothing

  989. less than

  990. celebrating the

  991. covenant

  992. faithfulness of

  993. God.

  994. His unseen

  995. hand was

  996. sovereignly seen

  997. and felt in

  998. every movement

  999. of their

  1000. experience,

  1001. including their

  1002. suffering of

  1003. 20 years.

  1004. But friends,

  1005. there's an

  1006. even bigger

  1007. picture to

  1008. end being

  1009. enjoyed here

  1010. in chapter

  1011. 5,

  1012. verse 5.

  1013. And that's

  1014. the beauty

  1015. of poetry.

  1016. We soar to

  1017. lofty heights

  1018. and make

  1019. connections that

  1020. you can't

  1021. just make in

  1022. a factual

  1023. historical

  1024. narrative.

  1025. Chapter

  1026. 5,

  1027. verse 5,

  1028. 4 and 5.

  1029. Lord,

  1030. when you

  1031. went out

  1032. from

  1033. Seir,

  1034. when you

  1035. marched

  1036. from the

  1037. region of

  1038. Edom,

  1039. the earth

  1040. trembled,

  1041. the heavens

  1042. dropped,

  1043. yes,

  1044. the clouds

  1045. dropped water,

  1046. the mountains

  1047. quacked before

  1048. the Lord,

  1049. even Sinai

  1050. before the

  1051. Lord,

  1052. the God

  1053. of Israel.

  1054. Sinai

  1055. pops up

  1056. in there.

  1057. And I

  1058. think what

  1059. we're being

  1060. told here is

  1061. that we're

  1062. to read the

  1063. story of

  1064. Deborah and

  1065. deliverance from

  1066. the Canaanites

  1067. like another

  1068. Exodus event.

  1069. Remember,

  1070. through Moses,

  1071. God delivered

  1072. his people

  1073. from bondage

  1074. to sin,

  1075. from slavery

  1076. in Egypt,

  1077. and brought

  1078. them back to

  1079. himself for

  1080. new holiness

  1081. and obedience.

  1082. And do you

  1083. remember how

  1084. he did it?

  1085. He brought

  1086. them through

  1087. the Red

  1088. Sea.

  1089. And it was

  1090. the water

  1091. that destroyed

  1092. the Egyptian

  1093. army in

  1094. totality.

  1095. The Lord

  1096. swept them

  1097. away as

  1098. well.

  1099. As a

  1100. demonstration

  1101. of his

  1102. sovereignty

  1103. and his

  1104. power and

  1105. his faithfulness

  1106. to his

  1107. people.

  1108. And you

  1109. remember,

  1110. after that

  1111. event,

  1112. Miriam got

  1113. alongside

  1114. Moses and

  1115. she wrote

  1116. a beautiful

  1117. song,

  1118. Exodus

    Exodus 15 chapter mention

  1119. chapter 15,

  1120. to celebrate

  1121. God's

  1122. sovereignty and

  1123. God's

  1124. faithfulness to

  1125. him.

  1126. This is a

  1127. very, very

  1128. close parallel.

  1129. And we're

  1130. meant to

  1131. see it like

  1132. that.

  1133. A parallel

  1134. song to

  1135. the faithfulness

  1136. of God.

  1137. Because once

  1138. again, you

  1139. see, their

  1140. faithful God

  1141. has pursued

  1142. his people

  1143. even into

  1144. the darkness

  1145. of their

  1146. sin and

  1147. brought them

  1148. back to

  1149. himself.

  1150. Determined

  1151. that they

  1152. would enjoy

  1153. the good

  1154. life that

  1155. only he

  1156. can deliver

  1157. to them,

  1158. that he

  1159. intends to

  1160. deliver to

  1161. them, in

  1162. spite of

  1163. their

  1164. determination

  1165. to turn

  1166. away from

  1167. it.

  1168. What a

  1169. picture of

  1170. God's

  1171. faithfulness.

  1172. What a

  1173. picture of

  1174. God's

  1175. faithfulness.

  1176. And it

  1177. dwarfs us

  1178. in comparison

  1179. to the

  1180. majesty and

  1181. the splendor

  1182. of God.

  1183. And before

  1184. him, here

  1185. we are,

  1186. sinful people,

  1187. even as we're

  1188. in God's

  1189. place,

  1190. constantly

  1191. wanting to

  1192. turn away

  1193. and find

  1194. something better,

  1195. even as we're

  1196. enjoying the

  1197. best that

  1198. the Lord has

  1199. to offer us.

  1200. What a

  1201. picture.

  1202. Depressing

  1203. and encouraging.

  1204. Nothing will

  1205. do for

  1206. Deborah and

  1207. Barak but

  1208. to sing to

  1209. the Lord.

  1210. Verse 3,

  1211. Hear, O

  1212. kings, give

  1213. ear, O

  1214. princess, to

  1215. the Lord I

  1216. will sing.

  1217. I will make

  1218. melody to the

  1219. Lord, the

  1220. God of

  1221. Israel.

  1222. And you

  1223. see, Deborah

  1224. in this

  1225. song is

  1226. putting

  1227. things back

  1228. how they

  1229. should be.

  1230. People all

  1231. around, the

  1232. nations all

  1233. around should

  1234. look at

  1235. God's

  1236. people and

  1237. when they

  1238. see God's

  1239. people, then

  1240. they should

  1241. see God.

  1242. That's not

  1243. what it's been

  1244. like for 20

  1245. years, but it

  1246. is now once

  1247. again with

  1248. Deborah's

  1249. song.

  1250. And Deborah

  1251. and Barak

  1252. land this

  1253. lesson with

  1254. disturbing

  1255. force in

  1256. the last

  1257. stanza of

  1258. the song.

  1259. It's a

  1260. very, very

  1261. left field

  1262. picture.

  1263. Chapter 5,

  1264. verse 27 to

  1265. 31.

  1266. I pondered

  1267. this and

  1268. pondered this

  1269. for a long

  1270. time over

  1271. the last

  1272. couple of

  1273. weeks, and

  1274. I think

  1275. maybe I've

  1276. got it

  1277. right.

  1278. You'll

  1279. have to

  1280. be the

  1281. decider of

  1282. it.

  1283. I've got

  1284. nobody else

  1285. to blame.

  1286. Maybe

  1287. Bo.

  1288. Yeah,

  1289. Bo.

  1290. Bo will

  1291. do.

  1292. Yep.

  1293. Okay, so

  1294. what happens

  1295. in verse

  1296. 27 is

  1297. that we

  1298. get this

  1299. gory,

  1300. repeated,

  1301. slow-mo

  1302. description

  1303. of

  1304. Sisera

  1305. dying.

  1306. And we're

  1307. meant to

  1308. just feel

  1309. the impact

  1310. of that.

  1311. And then

  1312. verse 28,

  1313. we transition

  1314. magically, as

  1315. only you can

  1316. do in

  1317. poetry, to

  1318. where?

  1319. To the

  1320. lounge room

  1321. where Sisera's

  1322. mother is

  1323. waiting for

  1324. him to

  1325. return from

  1326. campaign.

  1327. So follow

  1328. through with

  1329. me.

  1330. out of

  1331. the window

  1332. she peered.

  1333. Just a

  1334. sudden

  1335. transition.

  1336. Who's this

  1337. peering?

  1338. The mother

  1339. of Sisera

  1340. wailed

  1341. through the

  1342. lattice.

  1343. Why is

  1344. his chariot

  1345. so long

  1346. and coming?

  1347. Why tarry

  1348. the hoofbeats

  1349. of his

  1350. chariots?

  1351. Her

  1352. wisest

  1353. princesses

  1354. answer,

  1355. indeed she

  1356. answers herself,

  1357. have they

  1358. not found

  1359. and divided

  1360. the spoil?

  1361. A womb

  1362. or two

  1363. for every

  1364. man,

  1365. spoiled

  1366. of dyed

  1367. materials

  1368. for Sisera.

  1369. Spoiled

  1370. of dyed

  1371. materials

  1372. embroidered,

  1373. two pieces

  1374. of dyed

  1375. work

  1376. embroidered

  1377. for the

  1378. neck

  1379. as

  1380. spoil.

  1381. So what's

  1382. happening

  1383. here?

  1384. We're being

  1385. transported from

  1386. the grisly

  1387. reality of

  1388. Sisera's

  1389. death to

  1390. the palace

  1391. where his

  1392. mother and

  1393. family are

  1394. waiting for

  1395. his return.

  1396. She's wondering,

  1397. why is he

  1398. late?

  1399. Dinner's going

  1400. to get

  1401. cold.

  1402. And we're

  1403. again given

  1404. some insight

  1405. into illusion

  1406. and how

  1407. things are

  1408. not as

  1409. they seem.

  1410. She also

  1411. is living

  1412. under an

  1413. illusion.

  1414. Her

  1415. assumption

  1416. is that

  1417. this

  1418. powerful,

  1419. ruthless,

  1420. cruel son

  1421. of hers,

  1422. who has

  1423. always been

  1424. victorious and

  1425. who charged

  1426. out at the

  1427. head of the

  1428. most mechanized

  1429. army the

  1430. world had

  1431. seen at that

  1432. time,

  1433. that he'll

  1434. just come

  1435. home as

  1436. victor.

  1437. And so she

  1438. thinks,

  1439. well, if he's

  1440. not home

  1441. already,

  1442. then, well,

  1443. okay, let's

  1444. be honest,

  1445. boys will be

  1446. boys.

  1447. And so they

  1448. got a woman

  1449. to who that

  1450. is.

  1451. I take it

  1452. what they're

  1453. saying is that

  1454. Sisera and

  1455. his men are

  1456. busy raping

  1457. their newly

  1458. captive woman.

  1459. The result

  1460. of victory.

  1461. It doesn't

  1462. occur to her

  1463. that her

  1464. successful

  1465. son might

  1466. be dead.

  1467. She also

  1468. is living

  1469. under illusion.

  1470. Things are

  1471. not as they

  1472. seem.

  1473. And verse

  1474. 31 then

  1475. sums up

  1476. the whole

  1477. song.

  1478. So may

  1479. all your

  1480. enemies perish,

  1481. O Lord,

  1482. but your

  1483. friends be

  1484. like the

  1485. sun as

  1486. he rises

  1487. in his

  1488. might.

  1489. Amen.

  1490. Amen.

  1491. The enemies

  1492. of God,

  1493. those who

  1494. reject him

  1495. and believe

  1496. they can find

  1497. a good life

  1498. apart from

  1499. serving and

  1500. worshipping him

  1501. will ultimately

  1502. perish.

  1503. The unseen

  1504. hand of God

  1505. will make

  1506. that happen.

  1507. Even though

  1508. they may

  1509. appear

  1510. invincible

  1511. now.

  1512. It will be

  1513. the friends

  1514. of God,

  1515. verse 31,

  1516. who will

  1517. ultimately be

  1518. seen to have

  1519. both light

  1520. and life

  1521. and a

  1522. future.

  1523. So my

  1524. friends,

  1525. I think

  1526. the main

  1527. message of

  1528. this is

  1529. don't live

  1530. under

  1531. an illusion.

  1532. Choose

  1533. to live

  1534. in God's

  1535. reality

  1536. of true

  1537. life

  1538. and true

  1539. satisfaction.

  1540. Don't be

  1541. easily

  1542. conned

  1543. by that

  1544. which offered

  1545. you all

  1546. around you

  1547. in this

  1548. world.

  1549. it might

  1550. give you

  1551. a false

  1552. security.

  1553. It might

  1554. give you

  1555. an illusion

  1556. of

  1557. intimacy

  1558. with God

  1559. because after

  1560. all my

  1561. life's going

  1562. well and

  1563. because my

  1564. life's going

  1565. well then

  1566. God must

  1567. be favorably

  1568. disposed

  1569. towards me.

  1570. Things are

  1571. not as they

  1572. seem.

  1573. Don't live

  1574. in illusion.

  1575. Live in

  1576. reality.

  1577. God's

  1578. the real

  1579. deliverer and

  1580. his

  1581. self-effacing

  1582. judges and

  1583. saviors whisper

  1584. beautifully of

  1585. Jesus.

  1586. It's

  1587. interesting in

  1588. chapter 5

  1589. verse 7

  1590. Deborah is

  1591. called the

  1592. mother of

  1593. Israel.

  1594. It's a

  1595. lovely term.

  1596. Again it

  1597. took me a

  1598. while I

  1599. think to

  1600. unpack this

  1601. on my

  1602. mind.

  1603. So Deborah

  1604. is the

  1605. mother of

  1606. Israel.

  1607. Why?

  1608. Because

  1609. she's the

  1610. one who

  1611. demonstrated a

  1612. mother's

  1613. grief for

  1614. the waywardness

  1615. of her

  1616. children, her

  1617. people, her

  1618. nation.

  1619. She's the

  1620. one who's

  1621. demonstrated a

  1622. mother's care,

  1623. a mother's

  1624. concern, a

  1625. mother's

  1626. concern to

  1627. protect, a

  1628. mother's

  1629. commitment to

  1630. her children in

  1631. spite of their

  1632. failings and

  1633. their waywardness.

  1634. And does

  1635. anything whisper

  1636. more of Jesus

  1637. than something

  1638. like that?

  1639. Remember in

  1640. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 23:37

  1641. 23 verse 37

  1642. through to

  1643. 39 Jesus

  1644. comes and

  1645. he looks down

  1646. in Jerusalem

  1647. and he says

  1648. ah Jerusalem

  1649. Jerusalem,

  1650. would that I

  1651. could sweep

  1652. you up and

  1653. bring you into

  1654. safety under

  1655. my wings.

  1656. Jesus was

  1657. expressing a

  1658. mother's concern

  1659. for his

  1660. people.

  1661. Such fierce

  1662. jealousy for

  1663. them in their

  1664. sin that he

  1665. would literally

  1666. die to

  1667. protect them

  1668. and deliver

  1669. them.

  1670. a truer

  1671. and better

  1672. Deborah.

  1673. Barak is

  1674. prepared to

  1675. forgo his

  1676. reputation,

  1677. forgo any

  1678. glory that

  1679. might be

  1680. rightly claimed

  1681. by him,

  1682. even to the

  1683. point of being

  1684. shamed before

  1685. his people.

  1686. Why?

  1687. Because his

  1688. one focus was

  1689. God's glory

  1690. and the

  1691. deliverance of

  1692. God's people.

  1693. God's

  1694. people.

  1695. All he

  1696. wanted in

  1697. life was

  1698. not reputation

  1699. but to be

  1700. part of God's

  1701. salvation program

  1702. for his

  1703. people.

  1704. That would be

  1705. glory enough

  1706. for Barak.

  1707. And again,

  1708. what a beautiful

  1709. whisper of Jesus.

  1710. Philippians chapter

    Philippians 2:5–11

  1711. 2 verses 5 to

  1712. 11 talks about

  1713. how Jesus gave

  1714. up his glory,

  1715. gave up his

  1716. reputation,

  1717. accepted shame,

  1718. even to the

  1719. point of death.

  1720. Why?

  1721. Simply that he

  1722. might deliver

  1723. his people and

  1724. bring glory to

  1725. his father.

  1726. And you're

  1727. probably wondering

  1728. how is he going

  1729. to twist the

  1730. GL thing?

  1731. How is he going

  1732. to spin that

  1733. one?

  1734. Well, in

  1735. chapter 5 verse

  1736. 24, GL is

  1737. described as the

  1738. most blessed of

  1739. women.

  1740. I think it

  1741. works like this.

  1742. She accepted

  1743. that extreme

  1744. violence,

  1745. extreme violence,

  1746. was required to

  1747. deliver God's

  1748. people from

  1749. their tormentor.

  1750. And so, we

  1751. have a picture of

  1752. GL prepared to

  1753. ruthlessly kill

  1754. off God's

  1755. enemy by nailing

  1756. him to the

  1757. ground.

  1758. And that made

  1759. me think of

  1760. Colossians chapter

    Colossians 2:13–15

  1761. 2 verses 13

  1762. to 15 where

  1763. we're told that

  1764. Jesus acted with

  1765. a similar

  1766. ruthlessness to

  1767. destroy what

  1768. held us in

  1769. bondage and

  1770. tormented us.

  1771. That is in

  1772. Colossians is

  1773. told our record

  1774. of debt and

  1775. the ongoing

  1776. demands of the

  1777. law saying

  1778. guilty, guilty,

  1779. guilty, guilty.

  1780. And like

  1781. jail, Jesus

  1782. nailed our

  1783. deepest problem.

  1784. But again, you

  1785. see, things are

  1786. not as they

  1787. seem.

  1788. He did nail

  1789. our problem.

  1790. He did

  1791. deliver us.

  1792. Not by

  1793. inflicting

  1794. violence, but

  1795. by being the

  1796. victim of

  1797. extreme

  1798. violence.

  1799. The extreme

  1800. violence, the

  1801. violent death

  1802. needed to kill

  1803. off our

  1804. greatest enemy

  1805. by nailing the

  1806. law and its

  1807. demands to the

  1808. cross.

  1809. Again, a

  1810. beautiful picture,

  1811. a beautiful

  1812. whisper of the

  1813. Lord Jesus.

  1814. So friends,

  1815. don't mistake,

  1816. if you're not a

  1817. Christian here this

  1818. morning, don't

  1819. mistake the

  1820. self-effacing

  1821. Jesus for a

  1822. weak and

  1823. insignificant

  1824. Jesus.

  1825. Nothing is as

  1826. it seems.

  1827. Let's pray.

  1828. Lord, help us to

  1829. hear your word.

  1830. Help us to

  1831. appreciate the

  1832. complexity of

  1833. the way in which

  1834. it's been written

  1835. and the

  1836. beautiful pictures

  1837. it brings before

  1838. us.

  1839. Pictures, Lord,

  1840. that nail us in

  1841. our pathetic,

  1842. unoriginal

  1843. rebellion against

  1844. you.

  1845. and yet,

  1846. Lord, pictures

  1847. that show your

  1848. unexpected and

  1849. creative ways in

  1850. which you deliver

  1851. us, your

  1852. people.

  1853. Thank you, Lord,

  1854. that the most

  1855. unexpected, the

  1856. most creative way

  1857. is captured in

  1858. the person and

  1859. work of the

  1860. Lord Jesus.

  1861. Who would have

  1862. thought, Lord,

  1863. that you would

  1864. nail our deepest

  1865. problem at the

  1866. cost of the life

  1867. of your own

  1868. son.

  1869. We thank you,

  1870. Lord, that in

  1871. that you've

  1872. taken us from

  1873. illusion into

  1874. reality.

  1875. And we pray,

  1876. Lord, that we

  1877. might live

  1878. confidently every

  1879. single day

  1880. knowing that your

  1881. unseen hand

  1882. guides our every

  1883. move and our

  1884. every thought.

  1885. And I pray in

  1886. Jesus' name.

  1887. Amen.
