  1. All righty.

  2. So back into John 6, verses 1 to 21.

    John 6:1–21

  3. As we do, we're kind of looking at the character of Jesus, who he is,

  4. what kind of leader he is, what kind of king he's going to turn out to be.

  5. And friends, I'm going to suggest to you that he turns out to be

  6. a pretty darn good kind of king, even by the standards that we have,

  7. except that our standards kind of limit him a little bit too much.

  8. You see, we have expectations of our leaders.

  9. We have expectations that they will meet our demands.

  10. Now, it doesn't always appear at the forefront of our minds

  11. when we're electing our politicians.

  12. We're grateful.

  13. We're grateful to be in a country that Donald Trump isn't leading.

  14. We are.

  15. This is the kind of thing we talk about amongst ourselves, isn't it?

  16. Amongst each other.

  17. We dread the fact that Donald Trump will have a Twitter war

  18. with another global, at least nuclear power in the world.

  19. Suddenly, Donald Trump, who's someone who we can have a bit of a laugh about

  20. and a snicker about over a coffee at work,

  21. becomes someone who is affecting and impinging on our lives.

  22. And then we start to get really interested in what he is doing

  23. and our opinions kind of firm up into being somewhat more critical, shall we say.

  24. It's the same with our leaders.

  25. Same with our leaders here.

  26. Our prime minister and his party.

  27. You know, he's out there.

  28. He's kind of in the back of our minds.

  29. We kind of know who he is.

  30. And if it was, you know, who wants to be a millionaire,

  31. it probably wouldn't be the kind of question that we'd actually have to phone a friend on,

  32. who is this, who is our prime minister.

  33. But I can tell you, he comes to the forefront of our minds around budget time

  34. when he starts to say who's going to get tax cuts

  35. and who is going to get tax increases.

  36. When the party starts to lay out what's going to happen

  37. with the healthcare package this year.

  38. What is the government contributing towards education?

  39. What are all these things, these big decisions that they make,

  40. going to do to our lives?

  41. Are they going to improve them or not?

  42. We have expectations of our leaders.

  43. Expectations that they will make our lives better.

  44. And expectations that when they don't,

  45. they should expect to hear from us about it.

  46. And so as Jesus emerges in John's gospel,

  47. we start to see a little bit of what Jesus is like,

  48. who Jesus is and the kind of leadership he's going to bring to earth.

  49. We start to hear the controversy.

  50. Who is this Jesus?

  51. And is he really who he claims to be?

  52. The authorities are actually starting to view him as an enemy of the state.

  53. Why?

  54. Because he's not delivering on their expectations.

  55. But the witnesses, as David pointed out last week,

  56. the witnesses say he is the true king.

  57. He is the promised saviour.

  58. He is God himself.

  59. John is laying out Jesus' life and ministry to reveal the answer to this question.

  60. Who is Jesus?

  61. Not so that we can get the answer right in the pub quiz,

  62. but so that we might believe in him and be saved.

  63. In this next event in Jesus' life,

  64. we get a glimpse of what kind of king he is

  65. and what kind of salvation Jesus offers.

  66. Let's have a look at it now.

  67. So if you actually got your Bibles open,

  68. chapter 6, verses 1 and following.

  69. To start this event,

  70. John actually provides the context.

  71. He introduces this episode in Jesus' life,

  72. kind of like a date in the diary,

  73. like we might introduce.

  74. You know, the where, the when, and the who are we meeting,

  75. that sort of thing.

  76. Kind of like a date in the diary.

  77. But in light of the fact that John is wanting to witness to who Jesus is,

  78. perhaps more like testimony in a witness box.

  79. Testimony in a witness box.

  80. So let me pray now as we start to look at the where, when, and who

  81. and invite God to actually preside over us as we look at his word.

  82. Father God, we thank you for people like John

  83. who so faithfully represented Jesus in this gospel.

  84. But we pray now as we look at it, Lord,

  85. that what we would see is the truth, the whole truth,

  86. and nothing but the truth.

  87. In Jesus' name.

  88. Amen.

  89. Okay, so where were they?

  90. Well, they were by the Sea of Galilee.

  91. They'd just crossed it to a quiet place,

  92. probably the area that we now know as the Golan Heights.

  93. It was a remote place,

  94. very quiet area.

  95. But by the time John wrote this gospel,

  96. the lake actually had another name,

  97. and we get that other name as well.

  98. It was also called Tiberius,

  99. named after the Roman emperor at the time of Jesus' ministry.

  100. By all accounts, Tiberius was a good emperor.

  101. He was humble.

  102. He was the first of a group of emperors

  103. that actually refused to be deified,

  104. turned into a god and worshipped in the emperor cult.

  105. And he was a wise and capable leader.

  106. So King Herod,

  107. well, he tried to rename Galilee after Tiberius.

  108. So both names were known at the time,

  109. Sea of Galilee, Sea of Tiberius.

  110. Why is this important?

  111. Well,

  112. perhaps John wrote both names

  113. to include the non-Jews

  114. who would read his gospel,

  115. the people who would know the lake

  116. by the name Tiberius.

  117. Or perhaps he wrote

  118. this other name to remind the Jews

  119. that they were still under Roman rule.

  120. Or perhaps

  121. he wanted us

  122. to be thinking about

  123. the kind of ruler Jesus is

  124. over and against

  125. someone who was respected

  126. in the world at that time.

  127. Where were they?

  128. They were by the Sea of Galilee,

  129. a remote area

  130. on the shore of the Sea of Galilee.

  131. So who was there?

  132. Well,

  133. Jesus,

  134. and most likely

  135. his 12 disciples were there.

  136. Why do I say that?

  137. Well,

  138. they all fit into one boat,

  139. so it's unlikely

  140. that there were more than that.

  141. So it was round about that,

  142. round about the inner 12.

  143. But we also learn as well here

  144. that a large crowd

  145. followed Jesus.

  146. Jesus and his disciples

  147. went in a boat,

  148. the crowd had to walk around the edge,

  149. they took longer.

  150. And we read in verse 2,

  151. a large crowd was following him.

  152. We even read,

  153. why?

  154. Because they saw the signs

  155. that he was doing on the sick.

  156. They followed Jesus

  157. because of what he could do for them.

  158. Where,

  159. who,

  160. and when.

  161. Finally,

  162. the when.

  163. The date,

  164. we read again,

  165. is around the time of the Passover.

  166. Now,

  167. this date is important.

  168. It's the first event

  169. God put into the Jewish calendar.

  170. On this date,

  171. the Jews remembered

  172. their exodus from Egypt.

  173. A lamb was killed and eaten.

  174. Its blood was painted

  175. on the doorposts of the house.

  176. And a prophet called Moses

  177. led them out of captivity

  178. into freedom.

  179. This was a time of year

  180. when Israel probably felt

  181. their captivity the most,

  182. their Roman occupation

  183. most.

  184. At this point of the year,

  185. more than any other,

  186. they longed for salvation.

  187. They longed

  188. for the new Moses.

  189. This is the context

  190. that John presents

  191. this feeding of the 5,000.

  192. This is the context.

  193. But the question is,

  194. who is

  195. this Jesus?

  196. Now we move on

  197. and see the actual sign

  198. of the feeding of the 5,000.

  199. To answer the question

  200. of who Jesus is,

  201. John gives us

  202. this next sign.

  203. John peels back

  204. the layers of Jesus' life

  205. to reveal

  206. who Jesus is.

  207. And this next layer

  208. begins with a problem.

  209. As we've already seen,

  210. Jesus and his disciples

  211. had come to a remote area

  212. and the crowd

  213. that had followed them

  214. had followed them

  215. into this remote area.

  216. And Jesus can't help

  217. but see the problem.

  218. If we read in verse 5,

  219. lifting up his eyes then

  220. and seeing that a large crowd

  221. was coming toward him,

  222. Jesus said to Philip,

  223. where are we to buy bread

  224. so that these people may eat?

  225. Jesus' first response

  226. is to lift his eyes.

  227. He takes in everything,

  228. the crowd,

  229. their need,

  230. the resources at his disposal.

  231. And he has compassion on them.

  232. Jesus is in control.

  233. They are hungry

  234. and he's going to do

  235. something about it.

  236. That's who Jesus is.

  237. But,

  238. ever the teacher,

  239. Jesus doesn't miss a chance

  240. to test his disciples.

  241. We read in verse 6

  242. that Jesus said this

  243. to test him

  244. for he himself

  245. knew what he would do.

  246. Now Jesus probably asked Philip,

  247. singling out Philip of the Twelve,

  248. because it seems pretty rough,

  249. doesn't it,

  250. to be the one

  251. that actually gets this question.

  252. But he probably asked Philip

  253. because Philip is a local.

  254. And if there's a shop nearby,

  255. Philip is going to know

  256. where it is.

  257. And Philip's answer

  258. gets straight to the point.

  259. In verse 7 we read,

  260. Philip answered him,

  261. 200 denarii worth of bread

  262. would not be enough

  263. for each of them

  264. to even get a little.

  265. Paraphrase that.

  266. Philip is saying,

  267. I don't know.

  268. Perhaps I don't know

  269. isn't even strong enough

  270. to describe the sense

  271. of Philip's response.

  272. Philip is really saying,

  273. impossible.

  274. There is no shop.

  275. There is no money

  276. for this scale of catering.

  277. We're talking 200 denarii.

  278. That was over 30 weeks

  279. of wages

  280. for the average labourer.

  281. tens of thousands

  282. of dollars

  283. we're talking about.

  284. Now Andrew,

  285. he tries to

  286. bail Philip out

  287. a little bit,

  288. maybe take the pressure off

  289. like you do

  290. in the classroom.

  291. In verse 9 he says,

  292. he chips in and says,

  293. there's a boy here

  294. who has five barley loaves

  295. and two fish,

  296. but what are they

  297. for so many?

  298. Five barley loaves

  299. and two fish

  300. were not enough

  301. to go around.

  302. They couldn't just,

  303. I don't know,

  304. cook up a little rice

  305. or throw in a side salad

  306. and try and pad the meal out

  307. to make it bigger.

  308. The task was huge.

  309. Not even the Minter family,

  310. Manning,

  311. Manning at KFC

  312. could actually meet

  313. this demand.

  314. Not even the Walker family

  315. and the resources

  316. of Curry McDonald's

  317. could meet this demand.

  318. But even if they could,

  319. there was no KFC,

  320. there was no McDonald's,

  321. there was no money

  322. to meet this need.

  323. Jesus set a test

  324. and the disciples failed.

  325. But what was the test?

  326. Jesus knew what he would do.

  327. We can read that here.

  328. So the test wasn't actually

  329. to provide the meal.

  330. The test was to accept

  331. the evidence

  332. that David described last week

  333. that we saw in John 5.

  334. The test was to realize

  335. who Jesus is

  336. and act on it

  337. to begin to trust in him.

  338. But they don't get it.

  339. So Jesus gives them

  340. this sign.

  341. In verse 10 we take up,

  342. Jesus said,

  343. have the people sit down.

  344. Now there was much grass

  345. in the place

  346. and the men sat down,

  347. about 5,000 in number.

  348. Jesus then took the loaves

  349. and when he had given thanks,

  350. he distributed them

  351. to those who were seated.

  352. So also the fish,

  353. as much as they wanted.

  354. Jesus had them sit down.

  355. It's a nice grassy area

  356. we read here.

  357. Plenty of room

  358. for 5,000 men.

  359. Probably twice that number

  360. were present

  361. when you count

  362. the women and children.

  363. They didn't count

  364. women and children

  365. in their counts.

  366. And we know there was

  367. at least one child there

  368. because he had the lunchbox,

  369. the only lunchbox there.

  370. And then in verse 11,

  371. Jesus took the loaves

  372. and he gave thanks

  373. and distributed them.

  374. He fed more than 5,000 people

  375. with five loaves

  376. and two fish.

  377. Then after everyone had eaten

  378. their fill,

  379. you read here,

  380. Jesus told them

  381. to gather up the leftovers

  382. and they did.

  383. Twelve basketfuls

  384. of leftovers

  385. from one kid's

  386. happy meal.

  387. It's an incredible feat.

  388. But there's more going on here

  389. than a miraculous free meal.

  390. The phrasing,

  391. even the phrasing

  392. of this verse

  393. of what Jesus does

  394. and how he does it,

  395. well, it's very close

  396. to the accounts

  397. of the Lord's Supper.

  398. If you can read through,

  399. go and have a look

  400. at those later

  401. when you get home.

  402. But the accounts

  403. of the Lord's Supper

  404. in the other Gospels

  405. with Jesus taking bread,

  406. breaking it,

  407. giving thanks.

  408. And the abundance

  409. of the provision

  410. in a wilderness area

  411. is meant to remind us

  412. of the Israelites

  413. in the wilderness

  414. and that manna,

  415. the bread from heaven.

  416. Jesus wants us

  417. to make these links.

  418. He wants us to hear

  419. about what he did

  420. and think Exodus.

  421. Now, if you're thinking

  422. I'm stretching things

  423. a little bit here

  424. and that's, you know,

  425. where are you seeing

  426. all this in the passage,

  427. then what I would encourage you

  428. to do is to keep reading.

  429. Keep reading in this chapter

  430. and look at the links

  431. that Jesus makes.

  432. See, when Jesus goes back

  433. to the other side of the lake

  434. and the crowd catches up

  435. with him,

  436. he starts explaining

  437. exactly what he was doing

  438. and he overtly

  439. makes these links.

  440. So he's setting us up here

  441. to be starting to think

  442. along these lines.

  443. He wants us to hear

  444. about what he did

  445. and think Exodus.

  446. He wants us to think

  447. Passover lamb

  448. and Moses

  449. leading the people

  450. out of slavery.

  451. This sign is meant

  452. to tell us

  453. who Jesus is.

  454. It's meant to tell us more.

  455. It's meant to tell us

  456. about what kind of kingship

  457. he is going to have.

  458. what kind of king

  459. Jesus is going to be

  460. and it does.

  461. The word of what Jesus

  462. had done

  463. spread through the crowd

  464. and it provokes

  465. a response,

  466. a right response

  467. and a wrong response.

  468. In verse 14

  469. we read this.

  470. When the people

  471. saw the sign

  472. that he had done

  473. they said,

  474. this is indeed

  475. the prophet

  476. who is to come

  477. into the world.

  478. Jesus has just claimed

  479. to be this prophet

  480. in chapter 5

  481. verses 45 to 47

  482. and the Jewish leaders

  483. didn't believe him.

  484. Now the crowd

  485. is making the connections.

  486. Connections

  487. that the Jewish leaders

  488. wouldn't.

  489. They are beginning

  490. to believe

  491. that he is the prophet.

  492. It's the right response

  493. but it comes

  494. with a wrong response.

  495. the wrong response

  496. is that they then

  497. try to make him king.

  498. Their kind of king

  499. in verse 15.

  500. Perceiving then

  501. that they are about

  502. to come

  503. and take him

  504. by force

  505. to make him king

  506. Jesus withdrew again

  507. to the mountain

  508. by himself.

  509. Jesus is the king

  510. the ruler

  511. over everything

  512. but he's not

  513. the kind of king

  514. that they want.

  515. When the people

  516. of Israel

  517. saw what Jesus

  518. could do

  519. they saw a man

  520. who could save them

  521. from the problems

  522. as they saw it.

  523. They saw their problem

  524. as their circumstances.

  525. Life was hard

  526. under the Romans.

  527. Things were difficult

  528. in a subsistence

  529. economy

  530. living day to day.

  531. Sickness and disease

  532. went virtually unchecked.

  533. Life expectancy

  534. was half of what

  535. ours is today.

  536. We're going to say

  537. that 2,000 years later

  538. things aren't too

  539. different for us.

  540. We want our leaders

  541. to sort out

  542. our problems.

  543. Even our prayers

  544. reflect our worries

  545. our circumstances

  546. our jobs

  547. our families

  548. and relationships

  549. or lack of

  550. our health.

  551. These were

  552. and are

  553. real problems.

  554. we should

  555. take them

  556. to Jesus

  557. and Jesus

  558. is genuinely

  559. concerned about them.

  560. Jesus fed

  561. the 5,000.

  562. He healed

  563. many.

  564. But even though

  565. he fed the 5,000

  566. we need to understand

  567. that he was

  568. concerned for

  569. far more

  570. than their stomachs.

  571. He was concerned

  572. for something

  573. a little north

  574. and west

  575. of our stomachs.

  576. He was concerned

  577. for our hearts.

  578. So he didn't come

  579. as their kind of king.

  580. He fled from that.

  581. They wanted the

  582. Moses of the Exodus.

  583. Jesus

  584. came as the Lamb.

  585. The Lamb of God

  586. who takes away

  587. the sins of the world

  588. is how John the Baptist

  589. introduced him

  590. in John 1,

    John 1:29

  591. verse 29.

  592. The Lamb.

  593. You see,

  594. our problems

  595. are only symptoms

  596. of the real problem.

  597. Our problem

  598. is that we are

  599. separated from God

  600. by our sin.

  601. We live in rebellion

  602. against God

  603. as our rightful king

  604. and so we don't

  605. experience the goodness

  606. of God's rule.

  607. We experience

  608. our brokenness

  609. and his wrath,

  610. his judgment.

  611. And you know

  612. the world is messed up.

  613. Here's the problem

  614. and this is what I think.

  615. I'm guessing

  616. that most of the time

  617. you and I,

  618. we spend our time

  619. thinking about

  620. the problems

  621. and the mess

  622. being stuff

  623. that's out there

  624. that impinges on me,

  625. that sticks to me

  626. but it's not my fault.

  627. It's all this other stuff

  628. going on.

  629. It's the stuff

  630. going around us

  631. but not in us

  632. that we see

  633. so clearly.

  634. And if that stuff

  635. could change,

  636. we think

  637. everything would be

  638. all right.

  639. But am I the only one

  640. in the room

  641. who knows

  642. he's a mess inside?

  643. Am I the only one

  644. who has those moments

  645. of lucidity?

  646. I'm afraid

  647. there are,

  648. you know,

  649. unfortunately

  650. there are moments.

  651. Those moments though

  652. where I say something

  653. or I do something

  654. or I think something

  655. that genuinely shocks me.

  656. sometimes I even

  657. can feel these thoughts

  658. actually forming

  659. in my mind

  660. and I can't stop them

  661. from coming out

  662. in an action

  663. or words.

  664. And when they do,

  665. they become words

  666. and attitudes

  667. that do real damage

  668. to the people around me.

  669. these attitudes

  670. that actually come

  671. from within me,

  672. attitudes that take

  673. the blood,

  674. sweat

  675. and tears

  676. of Jesus

  677. to untangle.

  678. Jesus is that

  679. kind of king.

  680. The kind of king

  681. who would take

  682. our brokenness

  683. and God's anger

  684. on himself.

  685. the kind of king

  686. who would get slain

  687. like a lamb.

  688. The kind of king

  689. who would be the lamb

  690. so that he could

  691. be the Moses

  692. and lead us

  693. out of slavery

  694. to this mess

  695. once and for all.

  696. So Jesus,

  697. when they tried

  698. to make him king,

  699. he withdrew from them.

  700. He left his disciples

  701. alone

  702. to return to Capernaum

  703. without him.

  704. Who knows

  705. how they must

  706. have been feeling.

  707. Who knows

  708. after all that

  709. had just gone on.

  710. The melee

  711. that must have

  712. actually happened

  713. around these people

  714. starting to surge

  715. toward Jesus.

  716. I can tell you now though,

  717. we know enough

  718. to know this,

  719. that these 12 disciples,

  720. even these 12 disciples

  721. argued over

  722. who would be the greatest

  723. in the kingdom of God.

  724. These 12 disciples

  725. lobbied for

  726. who would sit

  727. at his right

  728. and his left

  729. in the kingdom

  730. when it came.

  731. These 12 disciples

  732. resisted Jesus'

  733. servant leadership

  734. and we'll see that

  735. in John 13

  736. when Jesus tries

  737. to wash Peter's feet.

  738. These 12

  739. defended Jesus

  740. with force

  741. when the soldiers

  742. came to arrest him.

  743. They likely

  744. wanted a Moses too.

  745. I think at least

  746. a part of them

  747. was hoping

  748. that the will

  749. of the crowd

  750. would have its way

  751. that day.

  752. But instead,

  753. they were left alone,

  754. crossing the Sea

  755. of Galilee at night

  756. without Jesus.

  757. And the crossing

  758. was turning out

  759. to be a hard one.

  760. In verse 18,

  761. we read these words,

  762. the sea became rough

  763. because a strong wind

  764. was blowing.

  765. When they had rode

  766. about three or four miles,

  767. they saw Jesus

  768. walking on the sea

  769. and coming near the boat

  770. and they were frightened.

  771. Now,

  772. the Sea of Galilee

  773. is roundish.

  774. It's not massively

  775. bigger than Lake Macquarie,

  776. but it's kind of roundish

  777. and it's deep,

  778. way deeper

  779. than Lake Macquarie.

  780. So the water

  781. can get pretty rough

  782. when the wind

  783. picks up.

  784. And three or four miles,

  785. that kind of puts them

  786. roughly in the middle

  787. of this lake.

  788. But it wasn't until

  789. they saw someone

  790. walking on water

  791. that they really

  792. started to freak out.

  793. In the ancient Near East,

  794. water was a sign

  795. of the,

  796. well,

  797. the chaos,

  798. of chaos in the world.

  799. It was one of these forces

  800. that they just could not

  801. even think of controlling

  802. and they struggled

  803. to live alongside.

  804. Working on the water,

  805. therefore,

  806. was a dangerous job.

  807. I remember Joe

  808. and I on our holiday

  809. recently.

  810. We went back to England

  811. and we went to a coastal town

  812. called Bridlington,

  813. which was a fishing town.

  814. And we discovered,

  815. I didn't realise this,

  816. but you know the cable

  817. knit jumpers that we don't

  818. tend to wear over here

  819. because it's too warm?

  820. We've got Ugg boots,

  821. like Matt.

  822. Yeah.

  823. The cable knit jumpers

  824. all have their own

  825. unique pattern

  826. according to the village

  827. that the person

  828. comes from.

  829. Why?

  830. Because when you get

  831. lost at sea,

  832. you're not always

  833. easily identifiable.

  834. And so they would look

  835. at the jumper

  836. to see what village

  837. they came from.

  838. They could take the body

  839. back to that village

  840. and they would know

  841. who was missing.

  842. It was a dangerous job

  843. working on the sea.

  844. So people who worked

  845. on the water

  846. were often

  847. incredibly superstitious.

  848. someone

  849. walking across

  850. the surface

  851. of the water

  852. in the middle

  853. of stormy weather

  854. was not going to

  855. send their thoughts

  856. in a healthy direction.

  857. They were alone,

  858. demoralised

  859. by what had happened

  860. that day

  861. and afraid.

  862. And something

  863. was coming

  864. toward them

  865. across the water.

  866. So Jesus spoke

  867. to them.

  868. In verse 20

  869. we read,

  870. he said to them,

  871. it is I,

  872. do not be afraid.

  873. It is I.

  874. A literal translation

  875. would be,

  876. I am,

  877. like,

  878. I am the bread

  879. of life,

  880. which we'll read

  881. as we go into

  882. the next part

  883. of chapter 6,

  884. 635.

  885. As John also

  886. recalls Jesus saying,

  887. I am the light

  888. of the world

  889. in chapter 8,

  890. verse 12.

  891. I am the good shepherd

  892. in chapter 10,

  893. verse 11.

  894. I am the way,

  895. the truth,

  896. and the life

  897. in chapter 14,

  898. verse 6.

  899. But this time,

  900. when the disciples

  901. are totally confused

  902. about who Jesus is

  903. and totally freaked out

  904. about how he's appeared,

  905. it's just,

  906. I am.

  907. This is the Greek version

  908. of God's personal name,

  909. Yahweh.

  910. When they were feeling

  911. at their lowest

  912. and most helpless,

  913. Jesus appeared

  914. and he said,

  915. I am.

  916. Who is Jesus?

  917. He is the king,

  918. but more,

  919. he is I am.

  920. He is Yahweh,

  921. the God who cares

  922. for his people,

  923. even in the mess.

  924. Whoever you think

  925. Jesus is,

  926. he's more.

  927. Whatever you want

  928. Jesus to do,

  929. he delivers more.

  930. whatever the mess

  931. in your life,

  932. he is with you

  933. in that mess,

  934. working toward a time

  935. when one day

  936. all of that mess

  937. will be wiped away.

  938. That time

  939. when the Lamb

  940. once and for all

  941. deals with the sin

  942. in the world,

  943. deals with the sin

  944. in our hearts,

  945. and restores peace

  946. to us all.

  947. Whoever you think

  948. Jesus is,

  949. he's more.
