  1. Well, imagine yourself hurtling down the freeway

  2. and suddenly the driver rips the steering wheel off

  3. and throws it out the window.

  4. You're out of control.

  5. It's going to end badly.

  6. That, I think, is a picture of exactly where we're at as a society

  7. when it comes to thinking about marriage and relationships.

  8. Some have veered away into believing that relationships and family,

  9. maleness and femaleness, can take any form a person chooses.

  10. They'll go on to say that many people, if not most people,

  11. will experience several different relationship forms

  12. and they'll have perhaps even several different gender expressions

  13. over their lifetime.

  14. And they will all be acceptable.

  15. Others veer off in another direction,

  16. believing that marriage and family is just a cultural invention

  17. of men and religion.

  18. And it's been invented to control and exploit women.

  19. And therefore it should be abolished completely.

  20. Others steer off in the opposite direction,

  21. making family and marriage absolutely essential

  22. to their sense of identity and worth as a person.

  23. I've got to be married.

  24. I've got to have children.

  25. And so here we are,

  26. back and forth across the road

  27. because we've no longer got a steering wheel.

  28. And the inevitable result

  29. is that so many will crash and burn.

  30. And as Christians,

  31. we've got to live in the middle of this chaos

  32. and find a way to navigate

  33. that reflects who we are as Christians.

  34. So I want to say to you this morning

  35. as I move into this series

  36. and open up the series

  37. for those who follow after me,

  38. I want you to hear that this teaching series

  39. is really important

  40. because we need the steering wheel of God's word

  41. if we are to model

  42. gospel-shaped family relationships

  43. in the face of this vicious

  44. and unrelenting attack

  45. that we're part of.

  46. We need to know what's right.

  47. We need courage to do what's right.

  48. But I also hasten to add

  49. that it will be a difficult series.

  50. Certainly it's going to be difficult

  51. for us to present

  52. because of our failings

  53. in this very area of relationships and family.

  54. And it'll be difficult for you to hear

  55. for exactly the same reason.

  56. It's always easier to pretend

  57. that things are well, isn't it?

  58. Than to take ownership of things that aren't right

  59. and to work for real change.

  60. And so it'll be difficult to hear, I suspect.

  61. But it will also be easily dismissed, I suspect,

  62. as being too general to be helpful.

  63. So what I mean by that is that

  64. so often we come to an issue like family and relationships

  65. with very specific issues

  66. that are very specific to us

  67. and we want answers for those issues.

  68. Those are the burning questions for us.

  69. And so then we get frustrated

  70. because our burning question

  71. isn't immediately answered.

  72. And so we write the whole thing off

  73. as being irrelevant.

  74. Well, all I can say to you this morning

  75. is I ask you to stay with us

  76. as we lay the solid foundations

  77. from which countless real issues

  78. might be properly addressed.

  79. We need the foundations right

  80. before we can see how to connect in

  81. and answer the specifics.

  82. So with that introduction,

  83. let's turn to God's word in Genesis 1 and 2.

  84. And I want to just give you a very brief overview

  85. of God's design for relationships.

  86. And I've set it as a chart there

  87. because I want you to see

  88. just the opposites as they develop,

  89. but hopefully you'll see that yourself

  90. as I talk through this.

  91. So God's design for relationships

  92. set out in Genesis 1 and 2.

  93. And I want to begin by saying this,

  94. that our identity,

  95. our sense of self,

  96. is in being image bearers.

  97. If you look at chapter 1 of Genesis,

  98. if you've got your Bible open,

  99. chapter 1, verses 26 and 27,

  100. very familiar words,

  101. but we need to look at them

  102. and refresh our memory again of them.

  103. Then God said,

  104. let us make man in our image,

  105. mankind in our image,

  106. after our likeness.

  107. And let them have dominion

  108. over the fish of the sea

  109. and over the birds of the heaven

  110. and over the livestock

  111. and over all the earth

  112. and over every creeping thing

  113. that creeps over the earth.

  114. So God created man in his own image.

  115. In the image of God,

  116. he created him.

  117. Male and female,

  118. he created them.

  119. We are made as image bearers.

  120. Our identity comes in the fact

  121. that we are to be

  122. a reflection of God's character.

  123. A reflection of our good God

  124. and defined in relation to him.

  125. So we're told there

  126. that in the Genesis and creation story

  127. that people are mankind,

  128. humankind,

  129. people are totally unique

  130. and distinct among created animals

  131. by virtue of being made

  132. in God's image.

  133. So what is it then

  134. to be made in the image

  135. or reflection of God?

  136. Well, Genesis 2 highlights

  137. four key areas

  138. which will come out

  139. over the next four weeks.

  140. I just want to mention two

  141. this morning.

  142. To be a reflection of God

  143. primarily is to be made

  144. for relationship.

  145. So we're in the column

  146. on the left now.

  147. By design,

  148. we were made

  149. for engagement

  150. with God.

  151. In Genesis 1 and 2,

  152. the picture of engagement there

  153. is what's known

  154. as the eternal community.

  155. Father, Son, and Spirit.

  156. The Trinity

  157. existed in harmony

  158. before creation.

  159. And mankind

  160. was made

  161. to engage

  162. in that eternal community.

  163. To enjoy

  164. that eternal community.

  165. To fully participate in it

  166. with Father, Son, and Spirit.

  167. To model that community

  168. in all of life's relationships

  169. in the context

  170. of the world

  171. that God has put them in.

  172. And we see also

  173. in Genesis 1 and 2,

  174. the relationship

  175. was characterized

  176. by trust

  177. and delight

  178. and submission.

  179. Adam delighted in God.

  180. He appreciated

  181. that his security

  182. and satisfaction

  183. and purpose

  184. was in relationship

  185. with God.

  186. And in chapter 2,

  187. he thrived

  188. within the functional roles

  189. allocated to him

  190. by God

  191. as God's vice-regent

  192. in ruling the world,

  193. ruling God's creation.

  194. And then as we move

  195. through chapter 2,

  196. we see

  197. a particularly

  198. interesting thing

  199. that being made

  200. for a relationship

  201. was characterized,

  202. these relationships

  203. were characterized

  204. by a loving

  205. complementarity.

  206. Look at chapter 2,

  207. verse 18,

  208. and you see

  209. a really, really

  210. amazing thing.

  211. Remember that

  212. Adam had

  213. a unique,

  214. special,

  215. intimate relationship

  216. with God,

  217. very direct.

  218. And yet,

  219. in verse 18,

  220. the Lord God said,

  221. it is not good

  222. that the man

  223. should be

  224. alone.

  225. Adam enjoyed

  226. a unique relationship

  227. with God,

  228. the Creator.

  229. Yet,

  230. for all that,

  231. God spoke

  232. of Adam's

  233. aloneness.

  234. Adam needed

  235. a relationship

  236. that was

  237. of the same

  238. essence,

  239. the same nature

  240. as his relationship.

  241. He had a wonderful

  242. relationship

  243. with God,

  244. but it wasn't

  245. perfectly reciprocal.

  246. Adam needed

  247. a relationship,

  248. a horizontal

  249. relationship

  250. of the same

  251. essence.

  252. So,

  253. in God's design,

  254. chapter 2 of

  255. Genesis,

  256. in God's design,

  257. one became

  258. two,

  259. and guess what?

  260. Two became

  261. one again.

  262. It's quite a neat

  263. little trick,

  264. really.

  265. Adam and Eve

  266. expressed their

  267. strong sense

  268. of self,

  269. self.

  270. Each created,

  271. in the image

  272. of God,

  273. their strong

  274. sense of self

  275. in a loving

  276. complementarity.

  277. And we'll open

  278. it up more

  279. in the next

  280. weeks,

  281. but each

  282. in that

  283. complementarity,

  284. each valued

  285. sameness.

  286. Bone of my bone,

  287. flesh of my flesh.

  288. Each valued

  289. sameness

  290. in the context

  291. of different

  292. functional roles.

  293. Each benefited

  294. from the other,

  295. a helper,

  296. so that together

  297. they could be

  298. something which

  299. they couldn't be

  300. individually in

  301. their aloneness.

  302. And they benefited

  303. from one another,

  304. yet without thought

  305. of competing.

  306. And we're told

  307. then at the

  308. beginning of

  309. chapter 2

  310. that all

  311. these relationships

  312. happened in

  313. the context

  314. of rest

  315. or peace.

  316. When God

  317. finished his

  318. work of creation,

  319. he rested.

  320. In other words,

  321. God shifted

  322. his focus

  323. from actual

  324. creating

  325. to sustaining

  326. and enjoying

  327. that which

  328. he had created.

  329. that's the

  330. picture of

  331. chapter 2.

  332. And so

  333. that leads

  334. into

  335. chapter 2

  336. then.

  337. The second

  338. idea of being

  339. designed is

  340. to be a

  341. reflection of

  342. God in

  343. being made

  344. for worship.

  345. Being made

  346. for relationship

  347. but being made

  348. secondly for

  349. worship.

  350. And so

  351. again,

  352. we picture

  353. the harmony

  354. of the eternal

  355. community,

  356. Father,

  357. Son and

  358. Spirit.

  359. the harmony

  360. is modeled

  361. through an

  362. appropriate

  363. response of

  364. each of those

  365. to the other.

  366. That is the

  367. definition of

  368. harmony.

  369. Father,

  370. Son and

  371. Spirit,

  372. different but

  373. appropriate

  374. response to

  375. each,

  376. creating this

  377. harmony.

  378. So also

  379. image bearers

  380. were designed

  381. to respond

  382. appropriately to

  383. God as

  384. his creatures.

  385. And again,

  386. this is

  387. worship.

  388. Worship is

  389. simply a

  390. response to

  391. God.

  392. And we

  393. see in

  394. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  395. 2 that it's

  396. an all-of-life

  397. response in

  398. the garden.

  399. Individually,

  400. they were to

  401. respond appropriately

  402. to God as

  403. image bearers.

  404. Together,

  405. they were to

  406. respond appropriately

  407. to God as

  408. image bearers

  409. together.

  410. They were

  411. thriving happily

  412. under his

  413. rule,

  414. valuing God-ordained

  415. distinctions and

  416. boundaries.

  417. And they see

  418. that in

  419. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  420. 2 they were

  421. worshipping in

  422. their work of

  423. tending the

  424. garden and

  425. ruling the

  426. world.

  427. That was

  428. worship.

  429. They were

  430. worshipping God

  431. in their

  432. marriage relationship

  433. as they were

  434. helpers and

  435. complementary of

  436. one another.

  437. And I take

  438. it that means

  439. that worship

  440. included their

  441. sexual relationships.

  442. So in that

  443. activity, that

  444. aspect of

  445. marriage,

  446. that also was

  447. an appropriate

  448. response to

  449. how God had

  450. made them.

  451. Worship is an

  452. all-of-life

  453. response.

  454. Everything was

  455. worship.

  456. Everything was

  457. God's rest, in

  458. other words.

  459. So God's

  460. rest, when you

  461. spell it all

  462. out from

  463. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  464. 2, is the

  465. peace, the

  466. harmony, the

  467. satisfaction that's

  468. enjoyed when

  469. God's people live

  470. as God designed

  471. them to live, as

  472. God created them

  473. to live.

  474. love.

  475. In sameness, but

  476. indifference.

  477. In engagement

  478. with God, yet

  479. worship of him.

  480. God's rest, in

  481. God's rest, in

  482. God's rest, in

  483. God's rest, in

  484. God's rest.

  485. In

  486. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  487. 3,

  488. but of course, all

  489. this was ruined.

  490. We move into

  491. chapter 3.

  492. All this was

  493. ruined when

  494. rebellion or sin

  495. entered God's

  496. world.

  497. And so the

  498. picture we have in

  499. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  500. 3, relative to

  501. chapter 1 and 2,

  502. is that sin

  503. grotesquely

  504. distorts

  505. everything that

  506. God had

  507. designed.

  508. And so any

  509. image bearing or

  510. reflection of

  511. God, especially

  512. in the sense of

  513. identity and

  514. sense of self, is

  515. grotesquely

  516. distorted because

  517. of sin.

  518. Francis

  519. Schaeffer

  520. captures it

  521. beautifully by

  522. saying that sin

  523. or rebellion has

  524. left people as

  525. majestic ruins.

  526. We are still

  527. image bearers, but

  528. so distorted that

  529. the best we can

  530. say about

  531. ourselves is that

  532. we're majestic

  533. ruins.

  534. Our identity and

  535. sense of self is

  536. just totally

  537. distorted.

  538. And so the

  539. reality described

  540. in Genesis 3 is

  541. the opposite.

  542. of what we see

  543. in Genesis 1 and

  544. 2.

  545. Instead of

  546. engagement, there's

  547. now detachment

  548. from God.

  549. A rebellious

  550. humanity has

  551. been excluded

  552. from participating

  553. in God's

  554. community, no

  555. longer able to

  556. relate as God

  557. designed.

  558. Now the reality

  559. is rejection of

  560. God, suspicion of

  561. his goodness, and

  562. open competition

  563. for personal

  564. sovereignty.

  565. That is, people

  566. in our world as

  567. we experience it

  568. now, cut loose

  569. from life as

  570. God defined it,

  571. cut loose from

  572. our identity as

  573. God defined it,

  574. determined to be

  575. God ourselves,

  576. determined to set

  577. our own course,

  578. to be our own

  579. rulers.

  580. Oh my goodness.

  581. I even scared

  582. myself.

  583. Determined to create

  584. our own version of

  585. the good life.

  586. love.

  587. And that pathway is

  588. driven by

  589. individualism,

  590. exploitation,

  591. consumerism, and

  592. by that I mean

  593. where love has

  594. been so distorted

  595. that is now

  596. expressed as

  597. manipulation and

  598. exploitation for my

  599. own benefit.

  600. I do something for

  601. you because I

  602. sense I will get

  603. gain from it

  604. personally.

  605. And out of that

  606. then, we become

  607. so ruthless in this

  608. pursuit of

  609. validation of

  610. our identity,

  611. validation of

  612. self, this

  613. distortion, that

  614. it makes us attack

  615. and wound and

  616. demolish others

  617. so that we might

  618. feel secure in

  619. ourselves.

  620. And sometimes

  621. that is so

  622. aggressive and

  623. so determined

  624. that our actions

  625. seriously impact

  626. the way other

  627. people have a

  628. sense of self.

  629. we put stuff in

  630. their head that

  631. remains theirs,

  632. baggage, and

  633. which they

  634. struggle with for

  635. many years to

  636. come, if not for

  637. the whole lifetime.

  638. And all so we

  639. can feel good about

  640. ourselves.

  641. And it produces

  642. restlessness and

  643. loss of peace.

  644. See, we're in

  645. conflict now.

  646. Restlessness is

  647. that.

  648. It's conflict.

  649. conflict.

  650. Because we

  651. long for

  652. something, we

  653. still sense deep

  654. down that there's

  655. something we're

  656. longing for, this

  657. harmony, this

  658. peace, this

  659. satisfaction, this

  660. sense of identity

  661. and self that's

  662. easy and fits.

  663. But we can't

  664. deliver it.

  665. So we long to be

  666. accepted by people

  667. but we also fear

  668. rejection by those

  669. who we have

  670. failed, by those

  671. we've offended in

  672. relationship.

  673. And that fear, I

  674. think, is ultimately,

  675. as Larry Crabb would

  676. say, fear of

  677. rejection by God.

  678. It's buried deep

  679. within us.

  680. We can't necessarily

  681. get it all untangled

  682. and explained but it's

  683. there.

  684. It drives us.

  685. You know that fear

  686. is a big part of all

  687. your relationships.

  688. And we live with

  689. shame.

  690. Knowing that we are

  691. exploiting and

  692. consuming those we

  693. profess to love, yet

  694. we cannot help

  695. ourselves.

  696. We cannot stop

  697. ourselves.

  698. We're secretly full

  699. of shame in their

  700. presence and

  701. ultimately, again,

  702. full of shame when we

  703. think of ourselves in

  704. the presence of God.

  705. fear.

  706. So fear and shame

  707. are such big parts

  708. of our relationships

  709. that often we don't

  710. understand why

  711. there's such fundamental

  712. parts of it.

  713. And all of this

  714. distorted identity

  715. and sense of self

  716. renders us unable

  717. to worship in truth

  718. or in spirit.

  719. And so, my friends,

  720. our worship

  721. therefore becomes

  722. false.

  723. It's distorted.

  724. Instead of being a

  725. whole of life response

  726. which is based on

  727. truth, based on how

  728. we're designed to be,

  729. we actually reduce it

  730. and we make our

  731. worship a selected

  732. response to God on

  733. our own terms.

  734. So we take our

  735. relationships out and

  736. we don't think that the

  737. way we conduct

  738. ourselves in marriage or

  739. as children.

  740. We don't think or

  741. say that as part of

  742. our worship.

  743. We don't think our

  744. sexual activity is part

  745. of our worship.

  746. We reduce it down to

  747. something that we feel

  748. comfortable with.

  749. It's a distortion.

  750. We make a part

  751. into the whole

  752. and we don't have the

  753. heart that engages

  754. with God.

  755. And so we find it

  756. easier to worship

  757. self

  758. rather than to have

  759. ourselves worship

  760. God.

  761. We find it easier

  762. to worship work

  763. than to worship

  764. God through our

  765. work.

  766. We find it easier

  767. to worship marriage

  768. than to worship

  769. God in our

  770. marriages.

  771. We find it easier

  772. to worship

  773. family than to

  774. worship God in and

  775. through our family

  776. relationships.

  777. We make part of

  778. the life into the

  779. whole and then

  780. think that when we

  781. present that to God

  782. as a religious

  783. action, we have

  784. done something

  785. worthwhile and

  786. pleasing to him.

  787. So often our

  788. worship has even

  789. reduced to singing.

  790. That's often how we

  791. think of worship

  792. primarily today,

  793. isn't it?

  794. But deep down we

  795. know that cannot

  796. work.

  797. So we're left in

  798. restlessness.

  799. We're left with a

  800. lack of satisfaction.

  801. We're left with

  802. confusion in our

  803. identity.

  804. And that gets

  805. expressed at all

  806. sorts of level.

  807. We're left without

  808. meaning and purpose

  809. in life.

  810. And so we struggle

  811. all the harder to

  812. find meaning and

  813. purpose in those

  814. things that we

  815. think should give us

  816. meaning and purpose

  817. such as family,

  818. such as our

  819. relationships.

  820. Blaise Pascal,

  821. the philosopher,

  822. once said that the

  823. doctrine of original

  824. sin, which is what

  825. we're talking about in

  826. Genesis 3, the

  827. doctrine of the fall

  828. seems an offense to

  829. reason when you

  830. first come across

  831. it.

  832. It seems ridiculous

  833. to think that people

  834. have been changed

  835. like this.

  836. But he goes on to

  837. say, once accepted,

  838. it makes the total

  839. sense of the human

  840. condition.

  841. See, we may not

  842. accept the

  843. argumentation behind

  844. it, but we would

  845. all have to agree

  846. that we make a mess

  847. of relationships.

  848. Our expectations

  849. for our relationships

  850. are rarely delivered.

  851. But the pursuit of

  852. our expectations

  853. causes enormous

  854. trouble and

  855. destruction.

  856. So we recognize

  857. that, and I'm

  858. telling you this

  859. morning, what's

  860. behind all that,

  861. whether you believe

  862. it or not.

  863. The reality of sins,

  864. as Schaeffer says,

  865. means that we're

  866. majestic ruins.

  867. we need to be

  868. restored to the

  869. original design,

  870. reformatted to

  871. God's original

  872. design so that

  873. once again we're

  874. a reflection of

  875. God's character

  876. and a model of

  877. this to the

  878. world.

  879. My friends,

  880. that's why this

  881. story has got a

  882. really happy,

  883. positive outcome.

  884. This is the

  885. beauty of the

  886. gospel.

  887. gospel.

  888. The gospel,

  889. in and through

  890. the gospel,

  891. my image-bearing

  892. capacity is

  893. restored through

  894. Christ so that

  895. once again I'm

  896. now able to

  897. live in my

  898. relationships as

  899. God designed it

  900. to be.

  901. The gospel

  902. restores my

  903. image-bearing

  904. capacity by

  905. restoring identity

  906. and a proper

  907. sense of self.

  908. Remember how

  909. Adam was defined

  910. in relation to

  911. God?

  912. Now, in the

  913. gospel, I am

  914. defined, you're

  915. defined in

  916. relation to

  917. Christ.

  918. Christ.

  919. Turn with me

  920. now to

  921. Ephesians.

  922. I'm just going

  923. to touch down

  924. on a few

  925. verses here.

  926. You can read

  927. through Ephesians

  928. 4.

  929. In fact, the

  930. whole of

  931. Ephesians is

  932. just full of

  933. the language of

  934. restoration.

  935. And you'll see

  936. that the ideas

  937. that match up

  938. with what's lost

  939. in Genesis 3

  940. and pushes back

  941. to what was so

  942. beautiful, but

  943. Genesis 1 and

  944. 2.

  945. So in Ephesians

    Ephesians 1:3

  946. chapter 1,

  947. verse 3,

  948. we'll start there,

  949. so we're

  950. told again

  951. here of

  952. engagement with

  953. God.

  954. That's part of

  955. the restoration.

  956. So there was

  957. engagement,

  958. detachment,

  959. now in Christ,

  960. engagement again

  961. through Jesus.

  962. Look at

  963. chapter 1,

  964. verse 3.

  965. Blessed be the

  966. God and Father

  967. of our Lord

  968. Jesus Christ,

  969. who has blessed

  970. us in Christ

  971. with every

  972. spiritual blessing

  973. in the heavenly

  974. places.

  975. And that keeps

  976. going there

  977. through the

  978. verses.

  979. It talks about

  980. Father, Son, and

  981. Spirit.

  982. being involved

  983. in our

  984. restoration so

  985. that once

  986. again we're

  987. engaged in the

  988. eternal community.

  989. We now enjoy

  990. every spiritual

  991. blessing God

  992. intended for us

  993. when he first

  994. created us.

  995. Father, Son, and

  996. Spirit have

  997. combined to

  998. completely restore

  999. relationship with

  1000. him.

  1001. We see that

  1002. coming through

  1003. again in

  1004. chapter 2.

  1005. The relationship

  1006. was characterized

  1007. by unity and

  1008. peace.

  1009. Chapter 2,

  1010. verses 11

  1011. through to 23.

  1012. I don't have

  1013. time to stop

  1014. and you can

  1015. read it for

  1016. yourself.

  1017. Jesus bears

  1018. our guilt

  1019. so that we

  1020. no longer need

  1021. to fear God.

  1022. Jesus turns

  1023. our shame

  1024. into honor

  1025. as we are

  1026. adopted into

  1027. God's family

  1028. as dearly

  1029. beloved children.

  1030. we no longer

  1031. need to fear

  1032. God's presence.

  1033. And turn with

  1034. me to chapter

  1035. 4, verses 1

  1036. to 6, what

  1037. Joe read a

  1038. little bit

  1039. earlier.

  1040. Vertical

  1041. restoration, that

  1042. restoration of

  1043. relationship with

  1044. God vertically

  1045. also means a

  1046. restoration of

  1047. relationship

  1048. horizontally.

  1049. Restoration to

  1050. peace and unity

  1051. with every other

  1052. believer in the

  1053. same way as we

  1054. now have peace

  1055. and unity with

  1056. Christ.

  1057. And we see

  1058. there that our

  1059. challenge is not

  1060. to create this

  1061. unity that has

  1062. been created in

  1063. Christ.

  1064. Our challenge is

  1065. simply to express

  1066. that unity.

  1067. Because that's

  1068. our identity.

  1069. That's who we

  1070. are now in the

  1071. Lord Jesus.

  1072. And that unity

  1073. ought to be

  1074. modeled in all

  1075. our relationships.

  1076. in our actions,

  1077. in our attitudes,

  1078. in our desires.

  1079. So that our

  1080. desires and

  1081. actions and

  1082. attitudes, as it

  1083. says there, are

  1084. worthy.

  1085. That is, that they

  1086. truly reflect, that

  1087. we're authentic.

  1088. Reflect who we are

  1089. in Christ.

  1090. In verse 15,

  1091. once again,

  1092. relationships can be

  1093. driven by truth

  1094. and love

  1095. and true

  1096. complementarity.

  1097. Verses 23 and

  1098. 24 that was read

  1099. to us,

  1100. to renew in the

  1101. spirit of your

  1102. minds and to put

  1103. on the new self

  1104. created after the

  1105. likeness of God in

  1106. true righteousness

  1107. and holiness.

  1108. we express again

  1109. truth and love

  1110. and true

  1111. complementarity as

  1112. we help one

  1113. another get rid

  1114. of all the

  1115. signs of the

  1116. life alienated

  1117. and detached

  1118. from God and

  1119. build in all the

  1120. signs of the

  1121. righteous life,

  1122. the life that's

  1123. re-engaged with

  1124. God, that's

  1125. restored with

  1126. God, that's

  1127. changed from

  1128. the inside out.

  1129. Because that

  1130. showcases our

  1131. new identity.

  1132. It showcases

  1133. and expresses

  1134. our new sense

  1135. of self,

  1136. our true sense

  1137. of self as

  1138. we were created

  1139. to show it.

  1140. So there's

  1141. nothing wrong

  1142. with being

  1143. selfish,

  1144. providing we

  1145. understand that

  1146. selfish for us

  1147. as Christians

  1148. is a reflection,

  1149. an authentic

  1150. reflection of

  1151. who we are

  1152. in Jesus.

  1153. And as we

  1154. struggle to

  1155. demonstrate our

  1156. new authentic

  1157. self in Christ,

  1158. then we are

  1159. worshipping.

  1160. Chapter 5,

  1161. verse 1 says,

  1162. be imitators of

  1163. God as beloved

  1164. children.

  1165. I take it that's

  1166. another type of

  1167. picture language

  1168. for worship.

  1169. that is,

  1170. respond to God

  1171. as God

  1172. is appropriate

  1173. to his character

  1174. and his being.

  1175. Chapter 5,

  1176. verses 8 to 15,

  1177. we'll probably see

  1178. those more over the

  1179. next few weeks,

  1180. talks about walking

  1181. as the children

  1182. of the light.

  1183. Look at verse

  1184. 18,

  1185. verse 8,

  1186. sorry,

  1187. of chapter 5.

  1188. For at one

  1189. time you were

  1190. darkness,

  1191. but thou

  1192. you're light

  1193. in the Lord.

  1194. You get this

  1195. contrast between

  1196. what we were

  1197. in sin

  1198. and what we

  1199. now are

  1200. in Christ.

  1201. Walk,

  1202. therefore,

  1203. as children

  1204. of light

  1205. and try to

  1206. discern,

  1207. verse 10,

  1208. what is pleasing

  1209. to the Lord.

  1210. Take no part

  1211. in unfruitful

  1212. works of

  1213. darkness,

  1214. but instead

  1215. expose them.

  1216. verse 17,

  1217. do not be foolish,

  1218. but understand

  1219. what the word

  1220. of the Lord

  1221. is.

  1222. Do not get

  1223. drunk with wine

  1224. for that is

  1225. debauchery,

  1226. but be filled

  1227. with the Spirit

  1228. addressing one

  1229. another in

  1230. psalms and hymns

  1231. and spiritual

  1232. songs,

  1233. singing and

  1234. making melody

  1235. to the Lord

  1236. with all your

  1237. heart.

  1238. Be your

  1239. authentic self

  1240. and that will

  1241. be true worship.

  1242. Worship in

  1243. spirit,

  1244. engaging with

  1245. the heart

  1246. and in truth.

  1247. A true

  1248. reflection of

  1249. who we are

  1250. in relation

  1251. to God.

  1252. A true

  1253. reflection of

  1254. God's value

  1255. and worth.

  1256. A true

  1257. identity.

  1258. And as we

  1259. do all that,

  1260. we have

  1261. evidence of

  1262. the Spirit

  1263. re-tuning

  1264. our hearts

  1265. to express

  1266. our growing

  1267. joy and

  1268. delight with

  1269. God.

  1270. And the

  1271. inevitable

  1272. outcome of

  1273. that will

  1274. be that

  1275. our

  1276. distorted

  1277. sense of

  1278. self

  1279. will give

  1280. way

  1281. to a

  1282. renewed

  1283. sense of

  1284. self

  1285. in Christ.

  1286. And that

  1287. will

  1288. transform our

  1289. relationships.

  1290. And only

  1291. that will

  1292. transform our

  1293. relationships.

  1294. relationships.

  1295. So,

  1296. we need to

  1297. be gospel

  1298. shaped in

  1299. our

  1300. thinking about

  1301. family

  1302. relationships.

  1303. But that

  1304. might not be

  1305. as obvious

  1306. as you

  1307. think.

  1308. See,

  1309. without the

  1310. steering wheel

  1311. of God's

  1312. word,

  1313. we actually

  1314. won't know

  1315. how to do

  1316. relationships as

  1317. God designed

  1318. them.

  1319. We won't

  1320. know how to

  1321. operate families

  1322. as God

  1323. designed them,

  1324. intended them.

  1325. We won't even

  1326. know what a

  1327. family is,

  1328. let alone how

  1329. to make it

  1330. God honoring.

  1331. We need the

  1332. steering wheel of

  1333. God's word.

  1334. Because if we set

  1335. our course by

  1336. society,

  1337. then we can

  1338. actually all just

  1339. go home,

  1340. because society

  1341. says there's

  1342. no problem.

  1343. Our society

  1344. has totally

  1345. embraced this

  1346. distorted identity

  1347. and self.

  1348. And society

  1349. says,

  1350. well,

  1351. actually,

  1352. there's no real

  1353. need for change.

  1354. If you get an

  1355. issue with me,

  1356. then your

  1357. challenge is to

  1358. accept me as

  1359. I am.

  1360. That's what

  1361. society says.

  1362. People just

  1363. have to accept

  1364. me and my

  1365. relationship

  1366. for what they

  1367. are.

  1368. And as

  1369. Christians,

  1370. we take that

  1371. on too easily.

  1372. We have come

  1373. to live with

  1374. dysfunction and

  1375. pain in our

  1376. relationships.

  1377. And we simply

  1378. conclude,

  1379. that's how

  1380. it's meant to

  1381. be.

  1382. That's as good

  1383. as it can

  1384. be.

  1385. That's as good

  1386. as it can be.

  1387. But we

  1388. sort of

  1389. sidestep a

  1390. little bit

  1391. because we

  1392. then compare

  1393. our family

  1394. context to

  1395. others out

  1396. there in the

  1397. wider world.

  1398. And we do

  1399. it in such

  1400. a way that

  1401. we can

  1402. usually conclude

  1403. that we're

  1404. doing very

  1405. well as

  1406. families relative

  1407. to other

  1408. people.

  1409. But so

  1410. often we

  1411. don't look

  1412. vertically to

  1413. see how

  1414. our family

  1415. measures up,

  1416. how our

  1417. family relationships

  1418. measure up in

  1419. terms of God's

  1420. intention for

  1421. us.

  1422. So we

  1423. live with

  1424. this sense

  1425. of well-being,

  1426. this acceptance

  1427. of where we're

  1428. at in our

  1429. relationships,

  1430. but it's

  1431. far from

  1432. worship.

  1433. We need to

  1434. see that

  1435. family and

  1436. relationships are

  1437. part of our

  1438. worship.

  1439. And you can

  1440. see through

  1441. Ephesians 4 and

  1442. 5, we'll come

  1443. back to some

  1444. of these

  1445. details, but

  1446. that needs

  1447. to, we need

  1448. to be our

  1449. authentic selves

  1450. in terms of

  1451. how we love

  1452. one another.

  1453. We need to

  1454. reflect who

  1455. we are in

  1456. Christ in

  1457. terms of

  1458. how we

  1459. repent when

  1460. we mess up

  1461. in our

  1462. relationships,

  1463. and we

  1464. will.

  1465. We need to

  1466. take ownership,

  1467. proper ownership.

  1468. It will

  1469. reflect how we

  1470. offer forgiveness

  1471. and handle

  1472. forgiveness in

  1473. our relationships.

  1474. Not a

  1475. fluffy, easy

  1476. thing that

  1477. just says,

  1478. well, okay,

  1479. all right, let's

  1480. just pretend it

  1481. hasn't happened,

  1482. nothing's really

  1483. been fixed, but

  1484. let's just pretend

  1485. everything's good.

  1486. That's not

  1487. reflection of

  1488. Christ.

  1489. And yet, that's

  1490. so often what

  1491. we mistake and

  1492. put forward as

  1493. forgiveness.

  1494. We need to be

  1495. gospel-shaped.

  1496. And then the

  1497. other extreme,

  1498. sometimes as

  1499. Christians, we

  1500. have too high a

  1501. view of family

  1502. and relationships.

  1503. I said early

  1504. on in the

  1505. introduction,

  1506. sometimes we

  1507. as Christians

  1508. make family an

  1509. idol and

  1510. marriage an

  1511. idol.

  1512. We make it our

  1513. goal in life to

  1514. be married, to

  1515. have children.

  1516. rather than

  1517. understand that

  1518. the primary

  1519. one-flesh

  1520. relationship we

  1521. have now is

  1522. with Christ.

  1523. It's Christ

  1524. who defines us

  1525. and gives us

  1526. our identity,

  1527. not whether

  1528. we're married

  1529. and whether

  1530. we have

  1531. children.

  1532. And I

  1533. think that's

  1534. why, I

  1535. think that

  1536. partly explains

  1537. why divorce

  1538. rates among

  1539. Christians are

  1540. just as high as

  1541. they are in

  1542. the non-Christian

  1543. world.

  1544. We're so

  1545. committed to

  1546. finding identity

  1547. in marriage and

  1548. family relationships

  1549. in our children

  1550. that if we

  1551. fail in one

  1552. then we

  1553. break one

  1554. marriage, we

  1555. break one

  1556. family and

  1557. we start

  1558. again because

  1559. that's what

  1560. we're chasing.

  1561. Friends, we

  1562. need to learn

  1563. that it's not

  1564. going to ever

  1565. be a biological

  1566. relationship that

  1567. will satisfy us

  1568. ultimately, but

  1569. Christ.

  1570. So let's pray

  1571. over the next

  1572. six weeks.

  1573. Let's pray for

  1574. new exposure,

  1575. new challenge

  1576. from God's

  1577. word so we

  1578. might identify

  1579. areas where

  1580. we have lost

  1581. gospel shape

  1582. or perhaps

  1583. we're never

  1584. gospel shaped

  1585. in the first

  1586. place.

  1587. And let's

  1588. commit to

  1589. struggle for

  1590. real change

  1591. so we might

  1592. be authentic

  1593. in our identity

  1594. and sense of

  1595. self as we

  1596. relate to one

  1597. another.

  1598. Let me pray.

  1599. Help us,

  1600. Lord, to hear

  1601. your word.

  1602. It will be

  1603. difficult,

  1604. difficult to

  1605. present and

  1606. difficult to

  1607. hear because

  1608. Lord, hearing

  1609. means the

  1610. risk of

  1611. exposure and

  1612. exposure pushes

  1613. us to the

  1614. challenge of

  1615. change.

  1616. Lord, keep

  1617. us, I

  1618. pray, above

  1619. all else from

  1620. simply pretending

  1621. that things are

  1622. well rather

  1623. than struggling

  1624. for real

  1625. change.

  1626. Amen.

  1627. Amen.

  1628. Amen.
