  1. Let's pray first before we begin.

  2. Father God, we want to see the way you work so amazingly, so out of our expectation.

  3. And we want to know you in a deeper way through the reading of your word and understanding of your word this morning.

  4. May you have mercy on us and change us through your Holy Spirit.

  5. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

  6. Samson, while this is a well-known story, do you know that it is not actually read in the Jewish synagogue at all?

  7. They don't want to read this story because they consider such an immoral story that it's not a good thing to read publicly.

  8. And so that if our hope is in a religion, then the story of Samson is not a good story to read or to tell the children about.

  9. But by God's grace, we know that none of us get to know God or become pleasing to God in the things that we do.

  10. And that's exactly why the story of Samson is in the Bible.

  11. And we also read in the book of Hebrews that Samson was one of those Old Testament people who received commendation from God and who is also now part of the great cloud of witnesses who are cheering us on to finish the race.

  12. So should we see Samson as a villain or hero?

  13. I think neither.

  14. The answer would be neither.

  15. I think Samson is just an ordinary man, a fallen man whose life was made extraordinary by God's grace.

  16. He is more like a servant of faith than a hero of faith.

  17. His life was not there to tell us how great he was, but his life was there to reveal the glory of God.

  18. So to help us remember the story, I will divide it into four parts represented by four women.

  19. The promise to a mother, the pursuit of a wife, the pleasure from a prostitute, and the play acting with Delilah.

  20. So part one is the promise to a mother.

  21. So we know that Samson's parents lived at a time when people did what was right in their own eyes.

  22. And that is not something surprising or new.

  23. Even before they went to the promised land, Moses already told them that they were living to doing what was right in their own eyes instead of in God's eyes.

  24. So in Deuteronomy chapter 12, verse 8, Moses said,

    Deuteronomy 12:8

  25. A day would be coming when God's people would not be doing whatever is right in their own eyes.

  26. So Moses is promising that there will be such a day, but a day hasn't come yet or has not come during the time of judges.

  27. Because that day would come when God gave them rest from all their enemies.

  28. So in the time of judges, even though they were able to subdue some of their enemies,

  29. but there are still some nations they could not overcome.

  30. And God did leave those nations there to test his people, to show them they could not save themselves by their own strength.

  31. So we were told that Samson's parents were infertile until God appeared and promised them that a son would be born to them.

  32. In the Bible, particularly in the Old Testament, there are many people that we know of born from infertile parents,

  33. and that is a recurrent theme.

  34. So Sarah was infertile before she gave birth to Isaac.

  35. Rebecca was infertile before she gave birth to Esau and Jacob.

  36. And Rachel was infertile before she had Joseph and Benjamin.

  37. And Hannah was infertile before Samuel's birth.

  38. So this desperate lay of children, in a way, show us that we need a promised son,

  39. someone that God has promised back in Genesis 3,

  40. that there will be a son born to a woman who would crush the head of the serpent

  41. and deliver his people from the bondage of sin.

  42. And that is the son that we've been waiting for.

  43. Until then, we will not have the ultimate rest from the enemies.

  44. These great difficulties in having children imply our inability to produce a son.

  45. When the promised son eventually came, he did not need any human effort to be conceived.

  46. Mary did not even require a man to conceive Jesus.

  47. We read in Judges 13, 3-5,

  48. The angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her,

  49. Behold, you are barren and have not born children,

  50. but you shall conceive and bear a son.

  51. Therefore, be careful and drink no wine or strong drink,

  52. and eat nothing unclean.

  53. For behold, you shall conceive and bear a son.

  54. No razor shall come upon his head,

  55. for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb,

  56. and he shall begin to save Israel from the hand of the Philistines.

  57. So God told Samson's parents that they would be given a son,

  58. and this son was to be set apart to serve God, a Nazirite.

  59. A sign of this being set apart is having his hair uncut,

  60. and a Nazirite also should not be touching anything that is dead,

  61. or having alcohol.

  62. So that is the sign given for Samson,

  63. to be showing people that he set apart for God.

  64. When a similar promise was given to Mary about her giving birth to a son

  65. who would save his people,

  66. there was no condition mentioned about how this son should live.

  67. We know that Jesus did not need any rule applied to him

  68. for him to be different to the world.

  69. Jesus loved God with all his heart,

  70. so he would naturally be different to the world.

  71. But Samson, just like us,

  72. naturally loved the way of the world,

  73. so his long hair and his other conditions is a reminder to him

  74. and others that he was supposed to serve God

  75. and not his own pleasure.

  76. So that's part one.

  77. Part two, the pursuit of a wife.

  78. So Samson grew up,

  79. and God was preparing him to be a judge.

  80. And we read in Judges 13, 24 to 25,

  81. and the young man grew,

  82. and the Lord blessed him,

  83. and the Spirit of the Lord began to stir him in Mahalidan.

  84. So God was preparing him in that area near the Philistine.

  85. But we read that Samson went to Timna.

  86. So instead of staying there to prepare,

  87. he went to the enemy territory.

  88. And he did not go to Timna to fight the Philistine.

  89. He went there for pleasure.

  90. So he saw a Philistine woman and wanted to marry her.

  91. Despite his parents' strong objection,

  92. he went ahead with the wedding.

  93. Samson told his parents,

  94. Get her for me,

  95. for she is right in my eyes.

  96. Samson thought his happiness was the most important thing to him

  97. and also to his parents.

  98. So he insisted to get what he wanted.

  99. But God has set him apart.

  100. What was important to him was to be holy.

  101. His parents might remember Joshua's warning,

  102. but they could not act on it.

  103. Joshua,

  104. after they went and entered into the promised land,

  105. Joshua gave them a warning.

  106. In Joshua chapter 23, verses 11 to 13,

    Joshua 23:11–13

  107. Joshua said,

  108. Be very careful,

  109. Be very careful, therefore,

  110. to love the Lord your God,

  111. for if you turn back and cling to the remnants of these nations

  112. remaining among you,

  113. and make marriages with them,

  114. so that you associate with them and they with you,

  115. know for certain that the Lord your God

  116. will no longer drive up these nations before you.

  117. But they shall be a snare and a trap for you,

  118. a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes,

  119. until you perish of this good ground

  120. that the Lord your God has given you.

  121. So Joshua's,

  122. the warning in Joshua

  123. was there,

  124. but people just couldn't follow it.

  125. In particular,

  126. it said that there will be the thorns in your eyes

  127. and we would see the effects

  128. of what Samson was doing eventually.

  129. So he went to Timna,

  130. and there is a place that he shouldn't have gone to.

  131. But God sent a lion on the way,

  132. or the second time when he was going there,

  133. perhaps to tell Samson

  134. not to expect a good time in Timna.

  135. He might overcome opposition with his strength,

  136. but he may not be happy

  137. without how the event would unfold.

  138. God's purpose for Samson

  139. to be a saviour would be fulfilled,

  140. whether Samson lived by God's way

  141. or his own way.

  142. Samson killed the lion easily,

  143. and some days later,

  144. he obtained some honey

  145. from the carcass of the lion.

  146. So remember, as a Nazi, right,

  147. he was not supposed to touch anything dead,

  148. but he just didn't care.

  149. Samson just did whatever

  150. that was piercing to him.

  151. Because in his days,

  152. sugar is very hard to get by,

  153. and getting something sweet

  154. is a special treat.

  155. But from the honey,

  156. he came up with a riddle

  157. to tease the Philistines

  158. in the wedding day.

  159. So in Judges 14, 14,

  160. Samson said to them,

  161. out of the eater

  162. came something sweet to eat.

  163. Out of the strong

  164. came something sweet.

  165. And in three days,

  166. they could not solve the riddle.

  167. So the riddle

  168. might just be a joke

  169. for Samson,

  170. but there is an important truth in it.

  171. Samson was saying that

  172. a strong lion,

  173. instead of eating others for food,

  174. became a source of sweet food

  175. for others.

  176. Samson would certainly

  177. not give up his own pursuits

  178. to sweeten the life

  179. of other people.

  180. From the strength of Samson,

  181. there was only death

  182. to his opponents.

  183. But this riddle was a prophecy

  184. about a strong person

  185. who would give his body

  186. to be food for his enemies.

  187. Not only for food,

  188. but sweet food.

  189. Food that restores our soul.

  190. Sometimes we might dream

  191. that God would give us power

  192. so that we could maintain

  193. justice in the world,

  194. God is showing us that

  195. when we have power

  196. like Samson had,

  197. we are more likely

  198. to live like Samson,

  199. using power to gratify

  200. the desires of our hearts.

  201. It is only in Jesus

  202. that we see

  203. how something sweet

  204. came out with his strength.

  205. Because of Samson's strength,

  206. he could kill the lion.

  207. From the dead lion,

  208. he found some honey.

  209. From the honey,

  210. he thought of a riddle.

  211. And through this riddle,

  212. a war broke up

  213. between Samson and the Philistines.

  214. So without knowing it,

  215. or meaning it,

  216. Samson began his role

  217. as a judge

  218. to subdue the Philistines.

  219. So start with,

  220. Samson killed

  221. the Philistine man

  222. and destroyed the crop.

  223. So by the end of part two,

  224. Samson lost his wife.

  225. His fun time in Timnah

  226. turned sour.

  227. He was not interested

  228. in fighting the Philistines

  229. to deliver his people.

  230. He just wanted to revenge.

  231. And he said,

  232. after another fight,

  233. he would quit.

  234. It was no fun anymore.

  235. So in Judges 15,

    Judges 15:7–8

  236. verses 7 to 8,

  237. we read,

  238. Samson said to them,

  239. if this is what you do,

  240. I swear I will be avenged on you,

  241. and after that I will quit.

  242. And he struck them hip and thigh

  243. with a great blow,

  244. and he went down

  245. and stayed

  246. in the cleft

  247. of the rock of Etem.

  248. However,

  249. the Lord did not let him quit.

  250. The Philistines used

  251. Samson's own people

  252. to struck him down.

  253. So another fight broke out.

  254. This time,

  255. we hear Samson pray to the Lord

  256. as he was dying of thirst

  257. after killing a thousand enemies.

  258. This prayer revealed to us

  259. that Samson had some knowledge of God,

  260. and he stayed on as a judge

  261. for 20 years after that.

  262. So his role as a judge

  263. seemed to have started

  264. with a prayer,

  265. and then we will see

  266. that it will end

  267. with another prayer.

  268. So we go to part three,

  269. the pleasure from a prostitute.

  270. So what was life like

  271. for the Israelites

  272. during Samson's time

  273. as a judge?

  274. We are not told the details,

  275. but in chapter 16,

  276. only the first few verses,

  277. we see that Samson

  278. could just walk

  279. into one of the five capitals

  280. of the Philistines

  281. without any care.

  282. The Philistines

  283. were at least

  284. no match with Samson.

  285. We also see that Samson

  286. remained the same

  287. as far as living

  288. for the pleasure

  289. of his eyes is concerned.

  290. He saw a prostitute

  291. in Gaza,

  292. and he slept with her.

  293. Then Samson left the city

  294. by simply taking down

  295. the city gates

  296. with his hands

  297. and carried them

  298. back to Israel's territory.

  299. However,

  300. the Philistines

  301. were not destroyed

  302. or chased out of the area.

  303. The Philistines

  304. and the Israelites

  305. were in a state

  306. of hostile coexistence.

  307. power seemed to have

  308. made Samson

  309. a lone ranger.

  310. He did not seem

  311. to consult

  312. either his parents

  313. or his peers

  314. for any of his actions.

  315. So last week

  316. from the story

  317. of Jephthah,

  318. Rob was telling us

  319. the futility

  320. and foolishness

  321. to use religion

  322. to get what we want.

  323. So Jephthah,

  324. to ensure his success

  325. in fighting the Amalekites,

  326. he make a stupid vow

  327. as if God

  328. would only help him

  329. if God was impressed

  330. with his sacrifice

  331. or his bargain.

  332. Samson did not need

  333. to make any vow.

  334. He knew that he would

  335. be successful

  336. fighting with any enemy.

  337. So Jephthah

  338. was using religion

  339. to try to bargain

  340. with God.

  341. Samson

  342. think that he was God.

  343. Basically,

  344. he could do anything.

  345. And so he thought

  346. that he was a superman.

  347. He was the army of one.

  348. So when we are gifted

  349. in some ways,

  350. we find it a lot easier

  351. to do things on our own.

  352. However,

  353. the kingdom of God

  354. is more about

  355. relationship

  356. than achievement.

  357. So last week,

  358. Rob was urging us

  359. not to use religion

  360. to try to reach God.

  361. This week,

  362. I think,

  363. I would urge

  364. brothers and sisters

  365. to serve God

  366. with one another.

  367. So we learn from those

  368. who are more mature

  369. and help those

  370. who are struggling a bit.

  371. It's not so much

  372. about what we achieve,

  373. but how we work together

  374. to live for God's glory.

  375. And that is

  376. the way

  377. of God's way

  378. for us

  379. to live

  380. as his people.

  381. So part four,

  382. the play acting

  383. with Delilah.

  384. So sometime later,

  385. Samson was attracted

  386. by Delilah.

  387. Delilah was the only woman

  388. given a name

  389. in the story

  390. of Samson.

  391. But the meaning

  392. of Delilah

  393. is flirtatious.

  394. Flirtatious?

  395. Yeah.

  396. So it is

  397. not likely

  398. to be a real name.

  399. Most likely

  400. it will be

  401. a nickname.

  402. But Samson

  403. paid no attention

  404. to the warning

  405. associated with her name.

  406. Delilah even

  407. told Samson

  408. that he was

  409. attempting to find out

  410. how to subdue him.

  411. We can see

  412. that sometimes

  413. the most gifted people

  414. are the most foolish ones

  415. because Samson

  416. was acting alone.

  417. He thought

  418. he was invincible.

  419. He did not seek advice

  420. from other people

  421. and he fell

  422. into the trap.

  423. So in Judges 16,

  424. chapter 16,

  425. verses 15 to 17,

  426. we read,

  427. and she said to him,

  428. how can you say

  429. I love you

  430. when your heart

  431. is not with me?

  432. You have mocked me

  433. three times

  434. and you have not

  435. told me

  436. where your great

  437. strength lies.

  438. and when she

  439. pressed him hard

  440. with her words

  441. day after day

  442. and urged him,

  443. his soul was waxed

  444. to death

  445. and he told her

  446. all his heart

  447. and said to her,

  448. a razor

  449. has never come

  450. upon my head

  451. for I have been

  452. a Nazirite

  453. to God

  454. from my mother's womb.

  455. If my head

  456. is shaved,

  457. then my strength

  458. will leave me

  459. and I shall become weak

  460. and be like any other man.

  461. So it was fun

  462. toying with Delilah

  463. until one day

  464. Samson gave his heart

  465. to Delilah.

  466. Delilah had fully

  467. replaced God

  468. as Samson's idol.

  469. Samson knew God

  470. was not there

  471. to love Samson.

  472. She was there

  473. to gain some profit

  474. from Samson.

  475. The cutting of

  476. his hair

  477. is a sign

  478. that Samson's heart

  479. was no longer

  480. with God.

  481. The Philistines

  482. eventually

  483. subdue Samson.

  484. They did not

  485. want to kill him.

  486. They gouged out

  487. his eyes.

  488. They wanted to

  489. humiliate him

  490. and display him

  491. as a sign

  492. of their victory.

  493. Sitting in the

  494. dark dungeon,

  495. Samson finally

  496. lost all

  497. that he enjoyed

  498. doing.

  499. At the same time,

  500. he was finally

  501. forced to examine

  502. himself and his life.

  503. Now that he did

  504. not have eyes

  505. to see,

  506. he could see

  507. a lot more

  508. than before.

  509. God was

  510. merciful to him.

  511. Samson began

  512. to mature

  513. and draw

  514. closer to God.

  515. His hair

  516. began to grow

  517. again,

  518. signifying

  519. he was having

  520. a new beginning

  521. with God.

  522. While the

  523. Philistines

  524. wanted to

  525. shame him

  526. and his God,

  527. Samson asked

  528. God to grant

  529. him one last

  530. request that

  531. he could die

  532. with the

  533. Philistines.

  534. He died

  535. killing more

  536. enemies

  537. than what he

  538. did in his

  539. lifetime.

  540. The Philistine

  541. leaders thought

  542. that they had

  543. defeated Samson

  544. and his God.

  545. they did not

  546. realize that

  547. they were

  548. bringing death

  549. into their

  550. own camp

  551. when they

  552. captured Samson.

  553. And Samson

  554. thought that

  555. his life

  556. had ended

  557. when he

  558. became weak

  559. and blind.

  560. He later

  561. realized that

  562. his life

  563. with God

  564. was just

  565. beginning

  566. in his

  567. weakness

  568. and blindness.

  569. We had

  570. a friend

  571. in Tamworth

  572. called Barrow.

  573. She passed

  574. away last year,

  575. a dear friend

  576. of us.

  577. she became

  578. blind from

  579. macular

  580. degeneration

  581. for about

  582. 10 years

  583. before her

  584. death.

  585. When we

  586. first went

  587. to Tamworth,

  588. I didn't

  589. have much

  590. to do with

  591. Barrow,

  592. but my

  593. wife,

  594. Lei,

  595. did because

  596. she worked

  597. in the

  598. kitchen.

  599. And Lei

  600. was quite

  601. fearful of

  602. Barrow

  603. before she

  604. turned blind

  605. because Barrow

  606. is a

  607. professionalist

  608. in terms of

  609. when she

  610. sees things

  611. not right,

  612. she would

  613. say it

  614. and so

  615. she could

  616. be quite

  617. critical and

  618. difficult to

  619. work with.

  620. But after

  621. she became

  622. blind,

  623. Barrow

  624. just becomes

  625. such a

  626. nice person

  627. to be with.

  628. You just

  629. sense of

  630. her joy

  631. and her

  632. calmness

  633. and so

  634. it's just a

  635. joy to be

  636. with her.

  637. I think

  638. I think

  639. when she

  640. could see

  641. all those

  642. things that

  643. people did

  644. wrong,

  645. all the

  646. mistakes that

  647. people did,

  648. she just

  649. couldn't

  650. resist to

  651. try to

  652. correct

  653. everything.

  654. And that

  655. made her

  656. quite a

  657. difficult

  658. person to

  659. work or

  660. live with.

  661. But when

  662. she couldn't

  663. see anymore,

  664. she just

  665. got to

  666. change her.

  667. And then

  668. there's a

  669. time when

  670. she becomes

  671. joyful in

  672. things.

  673. It's not

  674. so much

  675. of one

  676. thing,

  677. this thing

  678. must be

  679. done this

  680. way and

  681. that way.

  682. But she

  683. just enjoy

  684. people's

  685. presence and

  686. enjoy God's

  687. presence.

  688. And sometimes

  689. that's how

  690. we miss so

  691. much by

  692. being able to

  693. see and

  694. letting so

  695. many things

  696. distract us,

  697. influence our

  698. emotions,

  699. our thoughts.

  700. And missing

  701. out so much

  702. great things,

  703. wonderful things

  704. that God

  705. brought into

  706. our life

  707. because we

  708. are so

  709. insisting on

  710. things to

  711. be done in

  712. our ways and

  713. not knowing

  714. that God

  715. has done

  716. beautiful things

  717. in our life

  718. and other

  719. people's lives

  720. that appreciate

  721. that.

  722. And this

  723. barrel's change

  724. always is a

  725. lesson to

  726. me.

  727. So was

  728. Samson

  729. safe?

  730. So I think

  731. so because

  732. it's them in

  733. Hebrews 11.

  734. and also

  735. the Bible

  736. tells us

  737. that his

  738. family took

  739. his body

  740. back to

  741. the promised

  742. land and

  743. buried him

  744. there.

  745. So when

  746. the Old

  747. Testament

  748. tells us

  749. that someone

  750. is buried,

  751. that is

  752. meaning.

  753. It's not

  754. just tell us

  755. that it's

  756. buried.

  757. But it

  758. tells us

  759. that this

  760. person is

  761. buried in

  762. that land

  763. when God

  764. has promised

  765. that they

  766. have this

  767. hope of

  768. resurrection.

  769. That's

  770. special.

  771. And that's

  772. why we see

  773. when Jacob

  774. went down

  775. to Egypt,

  776. before he

  777. died,

  778. he asked

  779. Joseph to

  780. promise that

  781. he must

  782. bring his

  783. body back

  784. to the

  785. promised

  786. land to

  787. be buried

  788. there.

  789. It's so

  790. important for

  791. him because

  792. he's got

  793. this hope

  794. of glory

  795. and that's

  796. what God's

  797. people are

  798. looking for.

  799. So when

  800. we read

  801. Hebrews,

  802. we admire

  803. the faith

  804. of people

  805. like Abraham,

  806. Moses,

  807. and Gideon,

  808. but we

  809. find it

  810. difficult to

  811. see how

  812. Samson could

  813. be included

  814. in this

  815. list.

  816. So the

  817. fact that

  818. Samson is

  819. included in

  820. the list

  821. tells us

  822. that their

  823. faith was

  824. not their

  825. own,

  826. but it

  827. came from

  828. God.

  829. And if

  830. you meet

  831. people like

  832. Moses or

  833. Abraham in

  834. heaven and

  835. praise them

  836. for their

  837. faith,

  838. they will

  839. tell you

  840. that it

  841. was all

  842. God's

  843. grace.

  844. They will

  845. not boast

  846. in their

  847. faith,

  848. but they

  849. will tell

  850. you that

  851. the founder

  852. and perfecter

  853. of their

  854. faith is

  855. the Lord

  856. Jesus

  857. Christ.

  858. their

  859. lives were

  860. just a

  861. shadow of

  862. the coming

  863. king and

  864. serve as

  865. encouragement

  866. to us.

  867. If God

  868. can save

  869. Samson and

  870. use him for

  871. his purpose,

  872. he can do

  873. the same for

  874. any of us.

  875. So in

  876. Hebrews 12

    Hebrews 12:1–2

  877. verses 1 to

  878. 2 we read,

  879. Therefore,

  880. since we are

  881. surrounded by

  882. so great a

  883. cloud of

  884. weaknesses,

  885. let us also

  886. lay aside

  887. every weight

  888. and sin

  889. which clings

  890. so closely

  891. and let us

  892. run with

  893. endurance the

  894. race that is

  895. set before us.

  896. looking to

  897. Jesus,

  898. the founder

  899. and perfecter

  900. of our

  901. faith,

  902. who for

  903. the joy

  904. that was

  905. set before

  906. him,

  907. endured

  908. the cross

  909. despising

  910. the shame

  911. and is

  912. seated at

  913. the right

  914. hand of

  915. the front

  916. of God.

  917. So even

  918. Samson is

  919. among the

  920. cloud of

  921. weaknesses

  922. and we

  923. see him

  924. and we

  925. want to

  926. lay aside

  927. every weight

  928. and sin

  929. that clings

  930. so closely.

  931. We don't

  932. want to

  933. live like

  934. Samson.

  935. And let us

  936. run with

  937. endurance the

  938. race that is

  939. set before us

  940. looking to

  941. Jesus.

  942. Does it

  943. seem unfair

  944. that Samson

  945. still had

  946. the hope

  947. of glory

  948. despite his

  949. disobedient

  950. living?

  951. In a way

  952. it is unfair.

  953. It was the

  954. obedient

  955. living of

  956. Jesus Christ

  957. that gave

  958. us and

  959. Samson the

  960. hope of

  961. glory.

  962. In another

  963. way though,

  964. the one

  965. who lost out

  966. the most of

  967. Samson himself

  968. when he

  969. lived in

  970. disobedience,

  971. he missed

  972. out so much

  973. joy of the

  974. Lord when he

  975. was blinded by

  976. the pleasure

  977. of the world.

  978. Samson

  979. refused to

  980. die to

  981. himself.

  982. He wanted

  983. to gratify

  984. all his

  985. desires.

  986. I think

  987. if you

  988. ask Samson

  989. if he had

  990. a good

  991. life,

  992. he would

  993. tell you

  994. that he

  995. was the

  996. prodigal

  997. son who

  998. squandered

  999. all his

  1000. father's

  1001. gifts on

  1002. worthless

  1003. things.

  1004. And if

  1005. you ask

  1006. Samson what

  1007. the most

  1008. painful

  1009. experience in

  1010. his life

  1011. was,

  1012. he would

  1013. no doubt

  1014. say having

  1015. his eyes

  1016. gouged up.

  1017. However,

  1018. he would be

  1019. most thankful

  1020. to having

  1021. his eyes

  1022. gouged up.

  1023. It was

  1024. only when

  1025. he became

  1026. blind that

  1027. he became

  1028. free from

  1029. his own

  1030. sinful desires.

  1031. Despite

  1032. his flaws,

  1033. Samson was

  1034. a shadow

  1035. of Jesus

  1036. in three

  1037. ways.

  1038. One,

  1039. he was

  1040. a promised

  1041. saviour.

  1042. So the

  1043. real saviour

  1044. would come

  1045. from God

  1046. and be a

  1047. promise from

  1048. God.

  1049. Two,

  1050. he was a

  1051. strong man

  1052. and we do

  1053. need a

  1054. strong man,

  1055. a strong

  1056. saviour to

  1057. deliver us

  1058. from our

  1059. enemies.

  1060. Three,

  1061. he saved

  1062. his people

  1063. by dying.

  1064. So we

  1065. can only

  1066. be free

  1067. from the

  1068. curse of

  1069. law by

  1070. having a

  1071. saviour who

  1072. would die

  1073. for us.

  1074. Samson was

  1075. indeed a

  1076. very flawed

  1077. example of

  1078. a saviour,

  1079. but he did

  1080. become a

  1081. judge for

  1082. 20 years.

  1083. Even his

  1084. prayers were

  1085. quite immature,

  1086. but at

  1087. least he

  1088. prayed.

  1089. And we

  1090. can see

  1091. this is

  1092. God's

  1093. grace.

  1094. God is

  1095. not looking

  1096. for us

  1097. to be

  1098. perfect,

  1099. but at

  1100. least there

  1101. should be

  1102. some sign

  1103. of us

  1104. being changed,

  1105. wanting to

  1106. be like

  1107. Jesus,

  1108. and wanting

  1109. to be

  1110. gracious to

  1111. other people

  1112. as well.

  1113. Some people

  1114. may ask,

  1115. can we

  1116. live like

  1117. Samson and

  1118. expect to

  1119. be safe

  1120. at the

  1121. end?

  1122. I think

  1123. we can

  1124. answer this

  1125. question with

  1126. two questions.

  1127. So why

  1128. would you

  1129. want to

  1130. look to

  1131. Samson as

  1132. an example

  1133. to live

  1134. by when

  1135. we have

  1136. the perfect

  1137. saviour,

  1138. Jesus Christ,

  1139. to look up

  1140. to?

  1141. Number two

  1142. is,

  1143. and why

  1144. would you

  1145. want to

  1146. drink from

  1147. the well

  1148. of this

  1149. world to

  1150. quench

  1151. your thirst

  1152. while there

  1153. is living

  1154. water from

  1155. the Lord

  1156. Jesus Christ?

  1157. Hebrews 12,

  1158. 14 tells us

  1159. to strive

  1160. for peace

  1161. with everyone

  1162. and for the

  1163. holiness

  1164. without which

  1165. no one

  1166. will see

  1167. God.

  1168. The power

  1169. given to

  1170. Samson was

  1171. an external

  1172. power.

  1173. There was

  1174. little internal

  1175. change in

  1176. Samson until

  1177. we became

  1178. blind.

  1179. We do not

  1180. need to

  1181. become blind

  1182. or invalid

  1183. to change

  1184. from pleasure

  1185. seeking to

  1186. holiness

  1187. seeking,

  1188. because we

  1189. are given

  1190. power inside

  1191. us.

  1192. That was

  1193. why in

  1194. Ephesians 3,

  1195. the Apostle

  1196. Paul was

  1197. praying for

  1198. the Ephesians

  1199. that they

  1200. would be

  1201. strengthened

  1202. by the

  1203. Holy Spirit

  1204. in their

  1205. inner being.

  1206. Judges is

  1207. a book

  1208. about our

  1209. fallen nature.

  1210. We would

  1211. naturally

  1212. reject God.

  1213. Even the

  1214. judges whom

  1215. got raised

  1216. up to

  1217. save his

  1218. people were

  1219. seeking their

  1220. own glory

  1221. and pleasure.

  1222. God

  1223. himself has

  1224. to come

  1225. as a human

  1226. to save

  1227. us.

  1228. It is

  1229. not a book

  1230. about external

  1231. behavior,

  1232. what we

  1233. should do

  1234. or what we

  1235. should not

  1236. do.

  1237. It is a

  1238. book about

  1239. our hearts.

  1240. Samson gave

  1241. all his

  1242. heart to

  1243. Delilah and

  1244. he became a

  1245. slave to

  1246. his enemy.

  1247. On our

  1248. Friday Bible

  1249. study,

  1250. two nights

  1251. ago,

  1252. a young

  1253. man asked

  1254. if it

  1255. was okay

  1256. to buy

  1257. shares.

  1258. Where is

  1259. the limit?

  1260. Is it

  1261. gambling or

  1262. is it

  1263. investment?

  1264. Is it

  1265. wise?

  1266. So there's

  1267. lots of

  1268. factors we

  1269. can consider.

  1270. But I

  1271. think the

  1272. most important

  1273. thing is

  1274. whatever we

  1275. do is

  1276. where is

  1277. our heart?

  1278. Whose

  1279. glory are

  1280. we living

  1281. for?

  1282. Otherwise

  1283. there will

  1284. be too

  1285. much rules

  1286. and regulation

  1287. of what

  1288. you can

  1289. do or

  1290. what you

  1291. can't

  1292. do.

  1293. We

  1294. look at

  1295. our

  1296. hearts.

  1297. God

  1298. brought

  1299. Samson

  1300. our life

  1301. of pleasure

  1302. seeking and

  1303. bloodshed to

  1304. a life of

  1305. God seeking

  1306. and shedding

  1307. his own

  1308. blood.

  1309. When the

  1310. Lord Jesus

  1311. was on the

  1312. cross,

  1313. giving his

  1314. body and

  1315. blood to

  1316. fulfill the

  1317. righteousness

  1318. of God,

  1319. that was

  1320. his hour

  1321. of glory.

  1322. And the

  1323. Lord wants

  1324. to bring

  1325. us there

  1326. to share

  1327. this glory.

  1328. When we

  1329. have the

  1330. joy of

  1331. suffering for

  1332. righteousness

  1333. sake,

  1334. when we

  1335. are willing

  1336. to live

  1337. and die

  1338. for something

  1339. and someone

  1340. greater than

  1341. us,

  1342. that would

  1343. be glory.

  1344. Hebrews

    Hebrews 2:10

  1345. chapter 2

  1346. verse 10,

  1347. for it was

  1348. fitting that

  1349. he, for

  1350. home and

  1351. by home all

  1352. things exist,

  1353. in bringing

  1354. many sons

  1355. to glory,

  1356. should make

  1357. the founder

  1358. of their

  1359. salvation,

  1360. perfect through

  1361. suffering.

  1362. Let us

  1363. pray.

  1364. Father, we

  1365. tremble before

  1366. you, thinking

  1367. that you

  1368. would bring

  1369. people like

  1370. Samson,

  1371. people like

  1372. us, to

  1373. glory,

  1374. not only

  1375. to bring

  1376. us there,

  1377. but by

  1378. giving us

  1379. your son,

  1380. so that

  1381. we can

  1382. be there,

  1383. and not

  1384. only giving

  1385. us your

  1386. son,

  1387. but by

  1388. letting

  1389. your son

  1390. suffer,

  1391. so that

  1392. our sins

  1393. can be

  1394. forgiven.

  1395. Amen.

  1396. Father, we

  1397. look at

  1398. Samson,

  1399. and look at

  1400. us, and

  1401. see how

  1402. far we

  1403. are

  1404. away from

  1405. your glory,

  1406. how little

  1407. we see

  1408. and know

  1409. about this

  1410. glory.

  1411. Father, we

  1412. thank you for

  1413. your mercy upon

  1414. us, and

  1415. that we

  1416. would have

  1417. a desire for

  1418. this glory,

  1419. and looking

  1420. for the

  1421. city that

  1422. is to

  1423. come.

  1424. Father, we

  1425. ask that

  1426. you will

  1427. help us

  1428. to live

  1429. our life

  1430. worthy of

  1431. calling,

  1432. that we

  1433. might strive

  1434. for holiness

  1435. in the way

  1436. we live.

  1437. Thank you,

  1438. Father.

  1439. We pray in

  1440. Jesus' name.

  1441. Amen.
