  1. Good morning, everyone.

  2. If you're a visitor, an outline of what I'll be saying is on the bag of a sheet you got handed when you came in the door this morning.

  3. So it might help you.

  4. If you're a visitor, it might help you understand my accent.

  5. So in the psychology of human behavior, there's a term called denialism, or it's a process of constantly denying.

  6. And it reflects just that.

  7. It's a choice, a person's choice to deny reality.

  8. It's a powerful tool people use to protect against ideas that challenge us deeply or even to avoid an uncomfortable truth.

  9. So at a very small level, we use it regularly in relationships.

  10. I don't know if you're like me, you find yourself attempting to defend some indefensible behavior.

  11. Some indefensible statement.

  12. Something you know deep down was just wrong.

  13. But we find ourselves in denialism.

  14. Trying to avoid, the aim of that is to avoid the awkward, painful truth.

  15. We've just messed up really badly.

  16. But denialism is right through society.

  17. It happens at bigger pictures.

  18. So denialism we often find associated with self-interest.

  19. So for example, those who are climate change denialists are often those directly connected to the coal, gas, or timber industries.

  20. And so you can see that denialism is driven by perhaps a fear of losing money or power.

  21. Denialism at a big picture is also driven by issues of personal validation and identity.

  22. So at a big picture level, those who deny the Holocaust are often ultra-right-wing neo-Nazi types.

  23. It would threaten their whole reason for existence.

  24. Or again, closer to home, research shows this sort of thing for men.

  25. The research shows that men apparently don't change lines when they're in the supermarket waiting for the checkout.

  26. They'll observe one line perhaps going faster than their line, but they'll not change.

  27. Whereas women will apparently.

  28. Why not?

  29. Well, it's denialism.

  30. Because men in changing lines would have to admit to themselves they'd pick the wrong line to start with.

  31. It's a funny example, but it's denialism.

  32. How powerful it can be.

  33. Friends, I want to use that word to move us into the passage this morning.

  34. Denialism is a common response to Jesus.

  35. And we see that very much in this passage before this morning.

  36. So we're opening at chapter 6, verse 6 to 71.

  37. Let me recap the last three weeks.

  38. We've been working on this chapter 6 for three weeks now.

  39. Four weeks, actually.

  40. And back at the start, in the miracle of the feeding, Jesus demonstrates clearly his ability to provide, provide miraculously for the physical needs of his people by feeding a crowd in excess of 5,000 from a little boy's lunchbox.

  41. In response, the people love the immediate practical benefits that they can see coming from Jesus as a result of that miracle.

  42. And they're convinced that he's the great deliverer they had been waiting for.

  43. The new Moses who would implement their agenda for salvation.

  44. Who would free them from the Romans and establish Israel once again as the dominant nation in the world.

  45. But Jesus pushes them to think in deeper spiritual categories of the heart.

  46. He pushes them to understand that in their innermost being, they have a hunger, a deep spiritual hunger for life and satisfaction that only he can satisfy.

  47. And that he will satisfy as they come to him, as they see him like the essential ingredient of life, like bread and water.

  48. And as they come and feed on him with an urgency and a passion and a confidence.

  49. He says to them, look, I'm far, far better than physical manna.

  50. You look to physical manna, he says to the Jews, you look to physical manna as the gold standard of God's provision for his people.

  51. Well, let me tell you, I'm far, far better than anything manna could offer you.

  52. I'll give you better satisfaction.

  53. I'll give you salvation that lasts.

  54. I'll give you life eternal.

  55. I'm God's gift of bread from heaven, says Jesus.

  56. Sent to give real, spiritual, satisfied, eternal life.

  57. Now, when we hear that sort of stuff, we think, what's not to like about that?

  58. What's not to like about what Jesus offers?

  59. Satisfaction of deep hunger and thirst, which we all know is there.

  60. It drives us to cravings of all sorts as we seek to satisfy it.

  61. What's not to like about a guarantee of life and everlasting, never ending?

  62. What's not to like about the promise of intimate, guilt-free relationship with God?

  63. Which in our innermost being we sense we're meant to enjoy.

  64. What's not to like about that?

  65. Who wouldn't want this from Jesus?

  66. Well, lots, apparently.

  67. The actual response in verse 60 through to 71?

  68. Large numbers hear all of that and walk away from Jesus.

  69. Large numbers walk away from Jesus.

  70. And the context is important here.

  71. These verses actually represent the end of Jesus' public ministry in Galilee.

  72. And guess what?

  73. But it ends in hostility and rejection, as did his ministry in Judea,

  74. if you track back to the end of chapter 3 and chapter 4.

  75. But there's something different about this rejection.

  76. It's much more personally confronting.

  77. Because this rejection comes after an extended period of very clear teaching and offer by Jesus.

  78. And it comes from those, verse 60, those who are called disciples.

  79. And I take it that means a reference to those in the group who apparently had actually given up their jobs,

  80. full of such excitement and anticipation of Jesus' deliverer and saviour and king,

  81. and what he was going to do with them and for them.

  82. They'd given up their jobs and they were actually following him around for a period of time.

  83. Now, they come to a conclusion about Jesus that makes them pack up their swags and go back home.

  84. Mass defection came from where?

  85. Well, it came from excitement, giving way to outrage.

  86. If you look at verse 60 and 61.

  87. When many of his disciples heard it, they said, this is a hard.

  88. The word there is actually outrageous or offensive.

  89. It's a very, very strong word.

  90. This is outrageously offensive.

  91. So much so, it says, not that we can accept it, but who can even listen to it?

  92. It's the picture of them closing their ears, covering their ears, saying, this is so outrageously offensive to us.

  93. We can't even bear to listen to the guy anymore, let alone respond to him positively.

  94. And so the grumbling, as mentioned there in verse 61.

  95. We saw that last week and talked about it a fair bit last week.

  96. The grumbling, that sort of simmering, gut-dwelling hostility, now erupts.

  97. Overflows into outrage and offence at both Jesus and his teaching.

  98. Jesus' response, verse 62.

  99. Seems not the way to win friends and influence people.

  100. He hasn't obviously been to the right courses.

  101. What does Jesus do?

  102. He promises them more offence.

  103. Think that offends you?

  104. Well, says Jesus, listen up.

  105. Look out for what's ahead.

  106. Now, it's not exactly clear what verse 62 refers to, except that it's the source of even greater offence.

  107. Most likely, I think it's a reference to his approaching death, resurrection, and ascension,

  108. because that's the pathway to him being king and savior.

  109. And that was even more offensive to the Jews, that Messiah should actually be killed.

  110. And so, verse 66.

  111. After this, many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.

  112. They became so angry, so disillusioned, so disappointed with what they had heard from the lips of Jesus,

  113. given what they expected to hear from the lips of Jesus,

  114. that they just said, this is rubbish.

  115. We're out of here.

  116. So the decision to walk away from Jesus, as we've seen right through each week as we've been looking at chapter 6,

  117. is a very knowing decision.

  118. And Jesus identifies the trip point for their outrage and exposes it in verse 63.

  119. It is the spirit who gives life, says Jesus.

  120. The flesh or human agency or human means, human ability, is of no avail.

  121. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

  122. But there are some among you who do not believe.

  123. And so, the cause of walking away from Jesus, when you drill down through the outrage,

  124. is laid open before them.

  125. There's no wriggle room.

  126. Yes, they're walking away from Jesus,

  127. but Jesus wants them to understand why they're walking away from him.

  128. It's a clash of agendas.

  129. I talked about that last week and the week before.

  130. So the crowd were happy to accept Jesus as God's Savior and King,

  131. as long as he worked to their agenda,

  132. what God's Savior and King would look like and what he would do.

  133. But when they realized that Jesus was pushing a very different agenda

  134. for him as God's Savior and King,

  135. they became outraged.

  136. This isn't what we signed up for.

  137. This is nonsense.

  138. So they walked away.

  139. And let me spell out again, as I've done in previous weeks.

  140. See, it comes down to this.

  141. According to Jesus,

  142. salvation or acceptance with God,

  143. relationship with him and enjoyment of the good life forever,

  144. is not an outside-in practice,

  145. as the Jews believed it to be.

  146. On the contrary, says Jesus,

  147. salvation is an inside-out work of God's Spirit.

  148. And it's inseparably tied

  149. to believing and accepting the words of Jesus.

  150. And so the two agendas part company.

  151. It was not, says Jesus,

  152. salvation was not, says Jesus,

  153. an entitlement that came to them because they were God's special people.

  154. It was not a process they could apply and control and work towards

  155. using their own physical resources.

  156. On the contrary, says Jesus,

  157. it was a spiritual gift,

  158. something he would give them,

  159. something that they could not and would not and did not merit for themselves.

  160. It was grace,

  161. not performance.

  162. And so the agendas part company.

  163. And God would not happily accept them,

  164. says Jesus,

  165. on the basis of your religious actions,

  166. sacrifices and prayers and tithing and keeping the law of Moses,

  167. observing religious festivals and celebrations.

  168. No, says Jesus,

  169. God will only accept you on the basis of my merit,

  170. which he identifies earlier as his death,

  171. foreshadows earlier as his death,

  172. for forgiveness and God's work of the spirit renewing them.

  173. And so the agendas part company.

  174. And the agendas part company

  175. to such an extent that explains

  176. self-satisfied rejection of Jesus.

  177. He says,

  178. your deep spiritual hunger will only be satisfied through feeding on me.

  179. their denialism

  180. was a choice

  181. to continue their own pathway

  182. to satisfy their spiritual hunger.

  183. It was a clash of agendas.

  184. Now notice here

  185. that at no point does it suggest

  186. they were giving up their commitment to God.

  187. They continued to be very religious people.

  188. But it was religion

  189. and commitment to God

  190. in their terms,

  191. on their agenda.

  192. With God's agenda

  193. through Jesus rejected.

  194. And friends,

  195. the scandal of Jesus,

  196. the scandal of the gospel

  197. is still causing outrage.

  198. We see it.

  199. We see it.

  200. We see it weekly.

  201. People continue to come to Jesus

  202. with a tremendous anticipation

  203. and excitement about life.

  204. only to walk away again

  205. so often

  206. when they actually start

  207. to comprehend

  208. what it is that Jesus is offering

  209. and that it's significantly different

  210. to what they think

  211. Jesus is going to give them.

  212. And their denialism cuts in.

  213. They opt for

  214. their self-satisfied

  215. rejection of Jesus

  216. and their pursuit

  217. of satisfying of their own hunger

  218. in different ways.

  219. And so denialism means

  220. that people still choose

  221. the deeply ingrained,

  222. the comfortable pathway of religion.

  223. We see that everywhere.

  224. We even see it

  225. in church communities like this.

  226. And it's driven

  227. by self-righteousness.

  228. It's driven by

  229. self-salvation strategies

  230. because it's a determination

  231. to keep salvation in control,

  232. in our control,

  233. in our own hands.

  234. Tim Keller says

  235. that if you're a religious person,

  236. then he says

  237. you're so full of pride,

  238. this is a very,

  239. very powerful statement

  240. if you're a religious person,

  241. you're so full of pride,

  242. which is self-righteousness,

  243. that you will do the right thing

  244. before God

  245. so that you actually

  246. don't need God.

  247. So you're not in any sense

  248. indebted to God.

  249. what he means by that is

  250. that relationship with God

  251. is worked in such a way

  252. that it's not about

  253. the need for mercy

  254. and the need for forgiveness.

  255. It's not about the gift

  256. of new life by the Spirit

  257. and a thankful response

  258. to all of that.

  259. No, it's a contract.

  260. God, I have done

  261. this for you

  262. and I need you to understand

  263. what I've done for you

  264. so that in turn, God,

  265. you will do this for me.

  266. It's a contract.

  267. It doesn't actually need

  268. relationship with God.

  269. It doesn't have

  270. an urgent dependency.

  271. It's almost an agreement

  272. between equals.

  273. Self-righteousness thrives

  274. on denialism

  275. because when we do good,

  276. we feel good

  277. and the denialism is there

  278. because every day,

  279. even though we're doing good,

  280. we know jolly well

  281. that we cannot consistently

  282. meet our own standard

  283. of goodness.

  284. And so,

  285. in reality,

  286. we're actually secretly

  287. crushed

  288. by a sense of failure,

  289. a sense of fear,

  290. a sense of guilt.

  291. I haven't quite got it

  292. good enough

  293. to be in relationship

  294. with God

  295. and yet our denialism,

  296. our self-righteousness,

  297. will actually override that.

  298. And we continue to ride

  299. the roller coaster

  300. of despair.

  301. Then go to Jesus

  302. for true freedom,

  303. true security,

  304. true satisfaction,

  305. true life.

  306. You know as well

  307. as I do

  308. the drive within us.

  309. Keller says

  310. self-righteousness,

  311. pride,

  312. the drive within us

  313. to have religious actions

  314. that we can bring

  315. before God,

  316. convinced

  317. because of them

  318. that we'll be more

  319. loved by God,

  320. more accepted

  321. by Him.

  322. You know what we

  323. trot out.

  324. I believed.

  325. I believed.

  326. I believed.

  327. I believed.

  328. I was baptized.

  329. I'm a big fan

  330. of taking Lord's Supper.

  331. I read my Bible

  332. every day.

  333. I pray regularly.

  334. I go to church

  335. every week.

  336. I'm engaged

  337. in evangelism.

  338. I'm a church member

  339. and so on and so on.

  340. But this is

  341. spiritual pride

  342. rising up

  343. and imposing

  344. our physical

  345. salvation categories

  346. of self-gratification

  347. and happiness.

  348. and at different

  349. points we see

  350. those coming out,

  351. don't we?

  352. That we impose

  353. our categories

  354. of salvation

  355. on the expectation

  356. that salvation

  357. means health

  358. and wealth,

  359. success

  360. and relationships,

  361. having lots of

  362. things and being

  363. happy.

  364. It's the

  365. contractual thing.

  366. We've done this

  367. for you, Lord,

  368. and we expect you

  369. to do this for us.

  370. We expect you

  371. to do this for us.

  372. So denialism

  373. is alive and well

  374. among us

  375. because deep down

  376. we have the sense

  377. that those things

  378. just won't cut it

  379. with God

  380. because God's

  381. standard of holiness

  382. is just way beyond

  383. those things.

  384. but we ride

  385. the roller coaster.

  386. That's pretty

  387. confronting stuff,

  388. isn't it?

  389. Well, friends,

  390. let me tell you

  391. equally confronting

  392. is the challenge

  393. of throwing yourself

  394. on Jesus.

  395. It's a different

  396. sort of confronting

  397. but equally confronting

  398. and that's what

  399. the disciples

  400. were challenged

  401. to do by Jesus

  402. or as a result

  403. of being challenged

  404. by Jesus.

  405. Verse 67,

  406. you think

  407. when all this

  408. has gone through

  409. you think

  410. we're reading this

  411. we're not even

  412. part of it.

  413. Our minds

  414. are still

  415. reeling that

  416. people would

  417. walk away

  418. from Jesus

  419. and what do we

  420. get?

  421. Verse 67

  422. said to the 12

  423. as it were

  424. if you want

  425. the last

  426. of the last

  427. but what

  428. are you blokes?

  429. Do you want

  430. to go away too?

  431. Simon Peter

  432. answered

  433. Lord

  434. to whom

  435. would we go?

  436. To whom

  437. would we go?

  438. Because you

  439. have the words

  440. of eternal life.

  441. Peter

  442. speaks to the 12

  443. and there's

  444. something confronting

  445. but something

  446. comforting about

  447. these words

  448. because immediately

  449. they see that

  450. while a majority

  451. may walk away

  452. others believe

  453. precisely as

  454. Jesus said

  455. it would be.

  456. they too

  457. had made

  458. a personal

  459. life defining

  460. decision

  461. like everybody

  462. else in the crowd

  463. had made.

  464. They too

  465. had decided

  466. on the same

  467. evidence

  468. they had decided

  469. based on the

  470. same teaching

  471. as others

  472. who had

  473. defected

  474. but their

  475. life defining

  476. decision was

  477. belief

  478. to move

  479. towards Jesus

  480. to throw

  481. themselves

  482. on Jesus

  483. to whom

  484. shall we

  485. go?

  486. Jesus

  487. we recognize

  488. you are

  489. God

  490. is effectively

  491. what Peter

  492. is saying

  493. uniquely

  494. holy

  495. and to be

  496. honored

  497. as Lord

  498. and Savior

  499. we believe

  500. and come to

  501. know that you

  502. are the

  503. holy one

  504. of God

  505. Jesus

  506. we understand

  507. and are

  508. confident

  509. that you

  510. alone

  511. are the

  512. source

  513. of true

  514. life

  515. as you

  516. said

  517. you

  518. are

  519. having

  520. seen

  521. and heard

  522. and been

  523. taught

  524. by Jesus

  525. for Peter

  526. speaking

  527. with half

  528. of these

  529. twelve

  530. walking away

  531. was unthinkable

  532. walking away

  533. would be

  534. to commit

  535. spiritual

  536. suicide

  537. now notice

  538. Peter's

  539. awareness

  540. of how

  541. he came

  542. to this

  543. conclusion

  544. about

  545. Jesus

  546. Simon

  547. Peter

  548. answered him

  549. Lord

  550. to whom

  551. shall we

  552. go

  553. you have

  554. the words

  555. of eternal

  556. life

  557. notice

  558. verse

  559. six

  560. nine

  561. we have

  562. believed

  563. and have

  564. come to

  565. know

  566. does that

  567. strike you

  568. as unusual

  569. sort of

  570. back to

  571. front

  572. the way

  573. our

  574. modern

  575. scientific

  576. world

  577. would

  578. push

  579. you

  580. the

  581. believing

  582. comes

  583. before

  584. the

  585. knowing

  586. it

  587. started

  588. with

  589. believing

  590. the process

  591. of

  592. coming

  593. to

  594. the

  595. conclusion

  596. started

  597. with

  598. believing

  599. believing

  600. as their

  601. eyes

  602. actually

  603. observed

  604. Jesus

  605. doing

  606. miraculous

  607. things

  608. which

  609. they

  610. knew

  611. that

  612. only

  613. God

  614. could

  615. do

  616. making

  617. wine

  618. from

  619. water

  620. healing

  621. a

  622. child

  623. who

  624. was

  625. as

  626. good

  627. as

  628. dead

  629. without

  630. even

  631. seeing

  632. the

  633. child

  634. giving

  635. instant

  636. mobility

  637. to

  638. a

  639. paraplegic

  640. of

  641. 38

  642. years

  643. feeding

  644. a crowd

  645. of over

  646. 5,000

  647. from a

  648. children's

  649. lunchbox

  650. these

  651. were

  652. things

  653. that their

  654. eyes

  655. saw

  656. and their

  657. brains

  658. told them

  659. only

  660. God

  661. could

  662. do

  663. to

  664. believe

  665. the

  666. starting

  667. point

  668. my

  669. friends

  670. for

  671. certainty

  672. and

  673. spiritual

  674. things

  675. in the

  676. matter

  677. of life

  678. and

  679. salvation

  680. is not

  681. outrage

  682. and

  683. denial

  684. but

  685. believing

  686. believing

  687. why

  688. because

  689. the

  690. evidence

  691. and the

  692. words

  693. that go

  694. along

  695. with

  696. evidence

  697. are

  698. compelling

  699. even

  700. though

  701. it

  702. severely

  703. challenges

  704. what

  705. they had

  706. always

  707. believed

  708. these

  709. twelve

  710. were

  711. no

  712. more

  713. clued

  714. up

  715. about

  716. what

  717. Jesus

  718. was

  719. on

  720. about

  721. than

  722. the

  723. rest

  724. of

  725. the

  726. crowd

  727. but

  728. having

  729. seen

  730. with

  731. their

  732. eyes

  733. having

  734. understood

  735. what

  736. they

  737. saw

  738. with

  739. their

  740. eyes

  741. as

  742. being

  743. something

  744. only

  745. God

  746. could

  747. do

  748. and

  749. then

  750. hearing

  751. the

  752. teaching

  753. and

  754. went

  755. along

  756. with

  757. it

  758. even

  759. though

  760. they

  761. were

  762. clueless

  763. about

  764. the

  765. spiritual

  766. depth

  767. of

  768. it

  769. they

  770. still

  771. were

  772. pushed

  773. towards

  774. belief

  775. and

  776. believing

  777. leads

  778. to

  779. knowing

  780. so

  781. saying

  782. was a

  783. big

  784. help

  785. towards

  786. their

  787. conclusion

  788. about

  789. Jesus

  790. but

  791. ultimately

  792. it

  793. was the

  794. hearing

  795. and

  796. accepting

  797. of the

  798. words

  799. of

  800. Jesus

  801. the

  802. words

  803. of

  804. eternal

  805. life

  806. as

  807. Peter

  808. calls

  809. them

  810. here

  811. it

  812. was

  813. ultimately

  814. the

  815. words

  816. and

  817. the

  818. teaching

  819. that

  820. sealed

  821. the

  822. deal

  823. for

  824. these

  825. guys

  826. observing

  827. the

  828. things

  829. that

  830. Jesus

  831. did

  832. convinced

  833. them

  834. that

  835. he

  836. was

  837. authentically

  838. God

  839. and

  840. so

  841. being

  842. authentically

  843. God

  844. automatically

  845. his

  846. words

  847. deserved

  848. to be

  849. believed

  850. they

  851. came

  852. with

  853. authority

  854. unique

  855. authority

  856. and

  857. while

  858. they

  859. couldn't

  860. be

  861. understood

  862. necessarily

  863. they

  864. at

  865. least

  866. deserved

  867. the

  868. attitude

  869. of

  870. believing

  871. and

  872. so

  873. having

  874. seen

  875. Jesus

  876. do

  877. signs

  878. or

  879. miracles

  880. Peter

  881. had

  882. no

  883. hesitation

  884. in

  885. believing

  886. the

  887. words

  888. of

  889. explanation

  890. that

  891. followed

  892. even

  893. though

  894. at

  895. points

  896. the

  897. things

  898. that

  899. Peter

  900. heard

  901. and

  902. understood

  903. were

  904. as

  905. offensive

  906. to

  907. him

  908. as

  909. they

  910. were

  911. to

  912. others

  913. in

  914. the

  915. crowd

  916. remember

  917. Peter's

  918. response

  919. when he

  920. fully

  921. understood

  922. that

  923. Jesus

  924. was

  925. going

  926. to

  927. sacrifice

  928. himself

  929. he

  930. was

  931. furious

  932. not

  933. in my

  934. watch

  935. you

  936. want

  937. Jesus

  938. so

  939. ultimately

  940. my

  941. friends

  942. at a

  943. bigger

  944. picture

  945. if you

  946. look at

  947. the

  948. structure

  949. of

  950. John's

  951. gospel

  952. ultimately

  953. these

  954. twelve

  955. are an

  956. illustration

  957. of the

  958. very

  959. reason

  960. John

  961. is

  962. writing

  963. his

  964. biography

  965. so

  966. that

  967. contemplating

  968. the

  969. evidence

  970. you will

  971. believe

  972. that

  973. Jesus

  974. is

  975. the

  976. God

  977. the

  978. giver

  979. of

  980. life

  981. but

  982. at

  983. a

  984. micro

  985. picture

  986. these

  987. guys

  988. in

  989. throwing

  990. themselves

  991. on

  992. Jesus

  993. have

  994. come

  995. to

  996. experience

  997. personally

  998. that

  999. what

  1000. Jesus

  1001. had

  1002. promised

  1003. them

  1004. throughout

  1005. this

  1006. passage

  1007. eternal

  1008. life

  1009. they

  1010. were

  1011. proof

  1012. of the

  1013. drawing

  1014. power

  1015. of

  1016. God

  1017. they

  1018. were

  1019. proof

  1020. of the

  1021. renewing

  1022. power

  1023. of the

  1024. Holy

  1025. Spirit

  1026. they

  1027. were

  1028. not

  1029. more

  1030. clever

  1031. more

  1032. insightful

  1033. than

  1034. others

  1035. in the

  1036. crowd

  1037. they

  1038. had

  1039. been

  1040. taught

  1041. by

  1042. God

  1043. as

  1044. Jesus

  1045. said

  1046. last

  1047. week

  1048. if we

  1049. looked at

  1050. those

  1051. earlier

  1052. verses

  1053. quoting

  1054. from

  1055. Isaiah

  1056. that

  1057. all

  1058. God's

  1059. children

  1060. will

  1061. ultimately

  1062. need

  1063. to be

  1064. taught

  1065. by

  1066. God

  1067. evidence

  1068. of being

  1069. taught

  1070. by

  1071. God

  1072. properly

  1073. is

  1074. that

  1075. they

  1076. come

  1077. to

  1078. Jesus

  1079. the

  1080. drawing

  1081. power

  1082. of

  1083. God

  1084. the

  1085. renewing

  1086. power

  1087. of

  1088. the

  1089. Holy

  1090. Spirit

  1091. is

  1092. shown

  1093. in the

  1094. response

  1095. of these

  1096. guys

  1097. and the

  1098. outcome

  1099. hungry

  1100. embracing

  1101. of

  1102. Jesus

  1103. hungry

  1104. embracing

  1105. of

  1106. Jesus

  1107. they

  1108. had

  1109. come

  1110. to

  1111. know

  1112. that

  1113. Jesus

  1114. was

  1115. the

  1116. one

  1117. they

  1118. hangered

  1119. for

  1120. as

  1121. Jesus

  1122. had

  1123. told

  1124. them

  1125. he

  1126. was

  1127. the

  1128. one

  1129. they

  1130. hangered

  1131. for

  1132. they

  1133. had

  1134. come

  1135. to

  1136. see

  1137. in

  1138. Jesus

  1139. the

  1140. one

  1141. in

  1142. whom

  1143. satisfaction

  1144. and

  1145. life

  1146. was

  1147. to

  1148. be

  1149. found

  1150. for

  1151. them

  1152. there

  1153. was

  1154. no

  1155. alternative

  1156. to

  1157. whom

  1158. else

  1159. would

  1160. we

  1161. go

  1162. where

  1163. else

  1164. would

  1165. we

  1166. go

  1167. there

  1168. was

  1169. no

  1170. way

  1171. back

  1172. Jesus

  1173. you

  1174. are

  1175. all

  1176. we

  1177. need

  1178. which

  1179. is

  1180. what

  1181. Jesus

  1182. was

  1183. saying

  1184. right

  1185. through

  1186. I

  1187. am

  1188. all

  1189. you

  1190. need

  1191. Jesus

  1192. you

  1193. are

  1194. all

  1195. we

  1196. desire

  1197. there

  1198. was

  1199. no

  1200. authentic

  1201. alternative

  1202. savior

  1203. on offer

  1204. so they

  1205. throw

  1206. themselves

  1207. upon

  1208. the

  1209. mercy

  1210. and

  1211. grace

  1212. of

  1213. Jesus

  1214. my

  1215. friends

  1216. it

  1217. was

  1218. not

  1219. just

  1220. that

  1221. they

  1222. didn't

  1223. walk

  1224. away

  1225. with

  1226. the

  1227. rest

  1228. of

  1229. the

  1230. crowd

  1231. but

  1232. that

  1233. they

  1234. positively

  1235. embraced

  1236. Jesus

  1237. and

  1238. Judas

  1239. is

  1240. a

  1241. real

  1242. evidence

  1243. and

  1244. a

  1245. foil

  1246. for

  1247. this

  1248. I

  1249. think

  1250. there's

  1251. lots

  1252. more

  1253. can be

  1254. said

  1255. about

  1256. this

  1257. and

  1258. people

  1259. argue

  1260. endlessly

  1261. about

  1262. the

  1263. theology

  1264. of it

  1265. but

  1266. I

  1267. just

  1268. want

  1269. to

  1270. use

  1271. Judas

  1272. in

  1273. the

  1274. story

  1275. as

  1276. a

  1277. foil

  1278. of

  1279. showing

  1280. that

  1281. the

  1282. disciples

  1283. had

  1284. to

  1285. not

  1286. just

  1287. walk

  1288. away

  1289. but

  1290. they

  1291. had

  1292. to

  1293. positively

  1294. embrace

  1295. Jesus

  1296. because

  1297. at

  1298. the

  1299. end

  1300. of

  1301. the

  1302. day

  1303. Judas

  1304. was

  1305. one

  1306. in their

  1307. midst

  1308. who

  1309. didn't

  1310. walk

  1311. away

  1312. from

  1313. Jesus

  1314. openly

  1315. but

  1316. nor

  1317. did

  1318. he

  1319. come

  1320. to

  1321. Jesus

  1322. and

  1323. throw

  1324. himself

  1325. in

  1326. Jesus

  1327. there's

  1328. unbelief

  1329. right at

  1330. the heart

  1331. of this

  1332. believing

  1333. community

  1334. and man

  1335. that's a

  1336. scary

  1337. thought

  1338. as I

  1339. look around

  1340. here this

  1341. morning

  1342. being

  1343. being part

  1344. of a

  1345. community

  1346. of those

  1347. who

  1348. believe

  1349. being

  1350. in

  1351. close

  1352. proximity

  1353. in

  1354. Jesus

  1355. being

  1356. in

  1357. close

  1358. contact

  1359. with

  1360. his

  1361. word

  1362. stating

  1363. openly

  1364. and

  1365. identifying

  1366. with

  1367. others

  1368. who

  1369. believe

  1370. in

  1371. Jesus

  1372. is

  1373. never

  1374. enough

  1375. there

  1376. needs

  1377. to be

  1378. a

  1379. recognition

  1380. of

  1381. deep

  1382. spiritual

  1383. need

  1384. or

  1385. hunger

  1386. and an

  1387. embracing

  1388. of

  1389. Jesus

  1390. personally

  1391. and deeply

  1392. feeding

  1393. on him

  1394. as the

  1395. terminology

  1396. of last

  1397. week

  1398. feeding

  1399. on it

  1400. as the

  1401. satisfaction

  1402. of your

  1403. hunger

  1404. my friends

  1405. hungry

  1406. embracing

  1407. is very

  1408. very

  1409. challenging

  1410. verses 68

  1411. and verse 69

  1412. hungry

  1413. embracing

  1414. is equally

  1415. confronting

  1416. and challenging

  1417. as walking

  1418. away from

  1419. Jesus

  1420. because

  1421. you see

  1422. embracing

  1423. Jesus

  1424. means

  1425. giving

  1426. up

  1427. our

  1428. agendas

  1429. and

  1430. that's

  1431. really

  1432. hard

  1433. for us

  1434. to

  1435. do

  1436. it

  1437. means

  1438. believing

  1439. that

  1440. Jesus

  1441. is

  1442. God's

  1443. king

  1444. and

  1445. savior

  1446. sent

  1447. into

  1448. the

  1449. world

  1450. that

  1451. Jesus

  1452. is

  1453. the

  1454. only

  1455. way

  1456. to

  1457. acceptance

  1458. with

  1459. God

  1460. and

  1461. life

  1462. that

  1463. salvation

  1464. is a

  1465. spiritual

  1466. reality

  1467. received

  1468. from

  1469. Christ

  1470. alone

  1471. as a

  1472. gift

  1473. of

  1474. grace

  1475. and

  1476. that's

  1477. hard

  1478. to keep

  1479. believing

  1480. that

  1481. when

  1482. our

  1483. agenda

  1484. says

  1485. well

  1486. look

  1487. now

  1488. surely

  1489. we've got

  1490. something

  1491. we can

  1492. bring to

  1493. the

  1494. table

  1495. salvation

  1496. means

  1497. entrusting

  1498. your

  1499. salvation

  1500. entirely

  1501. to

  1502. God

  1503. giving

  1504. up

  1505. any

  1506. thought

  1507. of

  1508. controlling

  1509. or

  1510. being

  1511. entitled

  1512. to

  1513. relationship

  1514. with

  1515. God

  1516. on the

  1517. basis

  1518. of

  1519. your

  1520. own

  1521. understanding

  1522. your

  1523. abilities

  1524. your

  1525. desires

  1526. your

  1527. religious

  1528. actions

  1529. and

  1530. that's

  1531. really

  1532. hard

  1533. to keep

  1534. focused

  1535. on

  1536. isn't

  1537. it

  1538. when

  1539. our

  1540. agenda

  1541. says

  1542. well

  1543. actually

  1544. I

  1545. actually

  1546. think

  1547. I'm

  1548. a

  1549. basically

  1550. good

  1551. person

  1552. certainly

  1553. compared

  1554. to

  1555. others

  1556. that I

  1557. look

  1558. at

  1559. in the

  1560. wider

  1561. world

  1562. friends

  1563. throwing

  1564. yourself

  1565. in

  1566. Jesus

  1567. means

  1568. staying

  1569. true

  1570. to

  1571. him

  1572. even

  1573. when

  1574. from

  1575. within

  1576. the

  1577. community

  1578. believers

  1579. we

  1580. bear

  1581. the

  1582. hurt

  1583. and the

  1584. cost

  1585. of

  1586. those

  1587. who

  1588. secretly

  1589. betrayed

  1590. Jesus

  1591. by their

  1592. life

  1593. and their

  1594. actions

  1595. and their

  1596. practices

  1597. and that's

  1598. a real

  1599. cost

  1600. isn't it

  1601. because we

  1602. look around

  1603. we see

  1604. these

  1605. things

  1606. and we

  1607. think

  1608. maybe the

  1609. gospel

  1610. doesn't

  1611. work at

  1612. all

  1613. but my

  1614. friends

  1615. when we

  1616. see that

  1617. we see

  1618. evidence

  1619. the gospel

  1620. is working

  1621. exactly as

  1622. Jesus said

  1623. it would

  1624. work

  1625. some

  1626. will walk

  1627. away

  1628. some

  1629. should

  1630. walk

  1631. away

  1632. have

  1633. walked

  1634. away

  1635. theologically

  1636. and

  1637. emotionally

  1638. from

  1639. Jesus

  1640. but still

  1641. stay

  1642. in the

  1643. community

  1644. and some

  1645. can't

  1646. walk

  1647. away

  1648. there's

  1649. nowhere

  1650. else

  1651. to go

  1652. so this

  1653. is a

  1654. real

  1655. turning

  1656. point

  1657. in the

  1658. biography

  1659. of

  1660. Jesus

  1661. written

  1662. by

  1663. John

  1664. John

  1665. proves

  1666. a

  1667. genuine

  1668. consideration

  1669. of

  1670. evidence

  1671. from a

  1672. believing

  1673. attitude

  1674. prepared

  1675. to go

  1676. where the

  1677. evidence

  1678. takes

  1679. you

  1680. asking

  1681. that the

  1682. Lord

  1683. actually

  1684. might

  1685. reveal

  1686. truth

  1687. to

  1688. you

  1689. will

  1690. result

  1691. in

  1692. belief

  1693. and

  1694. life

  1695. if you're

  1696. a person

  1697. here this

  1698. morning

  1699. who thinks

  1700. well

  1701. it seems

  1702. so

  1703. out there

  1704. I want

  1705. to get

  1706. a hold

  1707. of this

  1708. but I

  1709. haven't

  1710. been able

  1711. to get

  1712. a hold

  1713. of it

  1714. maybe

  1715. that's

  1716. what you're

  1717. missing

  1718. maybe you

  1719. need to

  1720. look at

  1721. this process

  1722. of how

  1723. you come

  1724. to the

  1725. evidence

  1726. that runs

  1727. counter to

  1728. what we

  1729. tend to

  1730. believe

  1731. in our

  1732. scientific

  1733. world

  1734. we say

  1735. and we're

  1736. told

  1737. and we're

  1738. taught

  1739. we need

  1740. to

  1741. know

  1742. something

  1743. and be

  1744. sure of

  1745. its

  1746. truth

  1747. before we

  1748. believe

  1749. in it

  1750. well

  1751. God

  1752. reverses

  1753. the

  1754. order

  1755. and

  1756. challenges

  1757. you this

  1758. morning

  1759. to do

  1760. the same

  1761. in your

  1762. mind

  1763. reverse

  1764. the

  1765. order

  1766. come to

  1767. God's

  1768. word

  1769. believing

  1770. because it

  1771. is God's

  1772. word

  1773. and come

  1774. to God's

  1775. word

  1776. believing

  1777. as the

  1778. first step

  1779. in walking

  1780. towards

  1781. Jesus

  1782. because the

  1783. alternative is to walk

  1784. away from it

  1785. let me pray

  1786. Lord help us to

  1787. Lord help us to

  1788. understand your

  1789. word

  1790. it's confronting

  1791. at both

  1792. levels

  1793. it's confronting

  1794. for those

  1795. Lord who've

  1796. walked away

  1797. and it's

  1798. confronting for

  1799. those who

  1800. like us

  1801. say we want

  1802. to walk

  1803. towards you

  1804. and throw

  1805. ourselves

  1806. on you

  1807. help us

  1808. Lord to

  1809. throw

  1810. ourselves

  1811. on you

  1812. and your

  1813. agenda

  1814. for us

  1815. not imposing

  1816. or insisting

  1817. our agenda

  1818. over yours

  1819. in Jesus

  1820. name I

  1821. pray

  1822. Amen
