  1. love him or hate him, it's almost impossible to ignore him.

  2. Mr. Trump is so out there in the things he says and the things he does

  3. that he just polarizes people.

  4. It seems like, I don't know whether he means to do it or not,

  5. but he certainly manages to do it.

  6. This week, for instance, he disagreed completely

  7. with the predictions of the American Reserve Bank.

  8. And he said this,

  9. they're making a mistake because I have a gut.

  10. He means a gut feeling.

  11. I have a gut and my gut tells me more sometimes

  12. than anybody else's brain can ever tell me.

  13. That was a pretty big statement.

  14. Put in different words, it goes like this.

  15. What Mr. Trump feels and believes will determine his actions.

  16. Even if that means ignoring the statistics presented by a panel of experts like the Reserve Bank,

  17. he'll bag himself.

  18. Now, most people would express horror at such self-confidence.

  19. They'd see it as reckless, arrogant.

  20. But the uncomfortable truth is that we're actually quite like Mr. Trump

  21. at so many points in our lives.

  22. For example, in relational conflict,

  23. we're so quick to back ourselves.

  24. We're right, others are wrong,

  25. even in spite of the evidence at times.

  26. Why is it like that?

  27. Well, because, I think it's because we're driven by an incredibly powerful,

  28. but hidden desire to be right,

  29. to be in control of any given situation.

  30. Dare I say even,

  31. to be God-like in any situation,

  32. to have the final say.

  33. In the words of John Paul Sartre,

  34. French existential philosopher,

  35. he says,

  36. man is the being

  37. whose project is to be God.

  38. So, it's a proper statement, isn't it?

  39. You might not agree with anything else, he says,

  40. but you could agree with that one.

  41. And we feel the impact of that

  42. every single day.

  43. Again, for example,

  44. we often lament in society

  45. people who reject authority.

  46. Well, I actually think that's not quite right.

  47. It's not that people reject authority,

  48. it's that people actually want to be the authority

  49. speaking into the lives of others

  50. rather than recognize and live under an external authority.

  51. We want to control our own lives.

  52. We want to set our own destiny.

  53. We want to run our own agenda.

  54. We want to answer to no one but ourselves.

  55. And surprise, surprise,

  56. when we answer to ourselves,

  57. we try and convince ourselves that we're right.

  58. And even as the evidence of our internal brokenness

  59. tells us we can't really achieve

  60. the personal sovereignty we long for,

  61. we redouble our efforts to convince ourselves

  62. and convince others that we can.

  63. It's a matter of sovereignty.

  64. Whose sovereignty will be sovereign?

  65. In the same way,

  66. when we look into these passages in John,

  67. we've seen week after week

  68. an increase in pressure.

  69. Jesus is polarizing people.

  70. People loved him or they hated him,

  71. but they couldn't ignore him

  72. because of his radical words,

  73. his radical actions.

  74. And again, it was a battle for sovereignty,

  75. pitting personal feelings,

  76. a desire to be right,

  77. a desire to keep control

  78. on the part of the Jewish religious leaders

  79. against the challenge

  80. of coming under the sovereignty of Jesus.

  81. And the clash,

  82. as we move into verse 12 here,

  83. is a very familiar pattern.

  84. Jesus declares his sovereignty

  85. in the words,

  86. I am light and life.

  87. Now, we've got to remember the context.

  88. Jesus is in Jerusalem

  89. for the Feast of Booths.

  90. That was an important seven days

  91. of thanksgiving for God's blessing,

  92. especially God's blessing

  93. in the wilderness time

  94. after the Exodus.

  95. And that two key pictures

  96. dominated that week-long celebration.

  97. A picture of water,

  98. and Bo took us through that

  99. a couple of weeks ago,

  100. celebrating the fact

  101. that God provided for his people

  102. in the wilderness

  103. life-saving water.

  104. And we saw that Jesus

  105. had already claimed that,

  106. chapter 7, verse 31.

  107. He said,

  108. that which you're celebrating

  109. now in this feast,

  110. that's about me.

  111. I am the thirst-quenching water

  112. that will fill the wells of your soul.

  113. And equally,

  114. through the Feast of the Booths,

  115. there was another ritual,

  116. each evening,

  117. after the sun had set,

  118. four huge lampstands were lit

  119. in the outer courts of the temple,

  120. a place called the Treasury,

  121. which is where Jesus is teaching

  122. in this particular section.

  123. It was called the Treasury

  124. because there was 13

  125. trumpet-shaped money boxes

  126. in that area

  127. where people,

  128. as they were part of the celebration,

  129. would actually put money in

  130. as a gift to God

  131. in thankfulness

  132. for what he has done.

  133. And the light,

  134. these huge lampstands

  135. symbolized

  136. the pillar of cloud and fire

  137. that was a picture

  138. of God's glory,

  139. of God's presence with them

  140. in the period

  141. of the wilderness wanderings.

  142. And therefore,

  143. it became to them

  144. a picture of the guarantee

  145. that in their lostness,

  146. the Lord would lead them through

  147. into the life and the land

  148. that he had promised to give them.

  149. It was presence and deliverance.

  150. And people then,

  151. each evening of this week

  152. of feasting and celebrating,

  153. they would come along,

  154. each also holding burning torches,

  155. and they would dance

  156. into the evening.

  157. They would sing praises.

  158. They'd give money

  159. in thankfulness to the Lord.

  160. And it's said by those

  161. who lived in the time

  162. and recorded it

  163. that such was the light

  164. around the temple

  165. that illuminated

  166. the whole city of Jerusalem.

  167. And we can understand that

  168. because there was no street light.

  169. So once you moved away from that,

  170. you were in pitch darkness,

  171. essentially.

  172. So with that background,

  173. and remember,

  174. Jesus is there.

  175. Those big lampstands

  176. would have been in the background

  177. even as Jesus was teaching.

  178. We can sense something

  179. of the impact

  180. of Jesus' words

  181. when he says,

  182. I am the light

  183. celebrated in the festival.

  184. I am God's presence with you.

  185. I have come into your world

  186. which is darkened by sin

  187. to illuminate it,

  188. to dispel darkness,

  189. to dispel sin,

  190. and transform you

  191. into the bright,

  192. beautiful thing

  193. you were created to be

  194. in relationship with God.

  195. And so,

  196. as we move into this story,

  197. the festival is over

  198. for another year.

  199. The lights have gone out.

  200. Once again,

  201. darkness settles heavily

  202. on Jerusalem.

  203. Jesus says,

  204. I am the light.

  205. currently you're

  206. stumbling around

  207. in the dark,

  208. totally lost,

  209. unable to find

  210. your way home.

  211. I am the light

  212. to light your way.

  213. I am the light

  214. that will be with you

  215. and surround you

  216. as you walk that way.

  217. I will show you

  218. the way home.

  219. I will take you home.

  220. But notice what Jesus

  221. actually says.

  222. He says,

  223. you can have the light.

  224. You can have me,

  225. says Jesus.

  226. It's not just something

  227. you use out there

  228. like a torch

  229. on the end of your arm.

  230. You have me.

  231. You have the light.

  232. I am the light

  233. for life.

  234. Only I can give

  235. light for life.

  236. So,

  237. I think Jesus is saying,

  238. come to me

  239. and my divine light

  240. will stream

  241. into your heart,

  242. into your soul,

  243. dispelling the darkness

  244. of sin

  245. and misery

  246. and transform you

  247. from the inside out.

  248. Enlighten you

  249. from the inside out.

  250. And so,

  251. we see,

  252. I hope you can see,

  253. it's a matter

  254. of sovereignty.

  255. Jesus is saying,

  256. either

  257. back your own sovereignty,

  258. verse 12,

  259. looking for light

  260. and life

  261. as you've been doing

  262. in a renewed

  263. national Israel,

  264. a return

  265. to the great days

  266. of Moses

  267. or in a lifetime

  268. of sincere

  269. religious actions.

  270. He said,

  271. you can

  272. maintain

  273. and follow

  274. your own sovereignty

  275. and says Jesus,

  276. it will end badly.

  277. You'll experience

  278. darkness and death.

  279. Or,

  280. come under

  281. my sovereignty,

  282. says Jesus,

  283. believing it's me

  284. who connects

  285. God's people

  286. into God's presence,

  287. into relationship

  288. with God,

  289. into blessing

  290. and heaven.

  291. If you do that,

  292. says Jesus,

  293. then you will

  294. actually have,

  295. not just experience,

  296. you will have

  297. light and life

  298. forever.

  299. So,

  300. the response

  301. isn't surprising.

  302. Verses 13 to 20.

  303. Essentially,

  304. these guys

  305. are just saying,

  306. why should we

  307. listen

  308. or believe

  309. in you,

  310. Jesus?

  311. Now,

  312. I believe

  313. the response

  314. is full of anger.

  315. They actually

  316. hate the challenge

  317. to their sovereignty.

  318. So,

  319. verse 13,

  320. how are they going

  321. to get out

  322. from under

  323. this direct challenge

  324. as Jesus ramps it up

  325. and leaves them

  326. less and less

  327. wriggle room?

  328. Well,

  329. they do what

  330. they're so good

  331. at doing

  332. and they've done

  333. it before

  334. in earlier chapters.

  335. They plead

  336. a technical,

  337. a legal technicality.

  338. Jesus,

  339. we don't have to

  340. listen to what

  341. you're saying

  342. because,

  343. technically,

  344. your testimony

  345. isn't valid.

  346. You're testifying

  347. about yourself.

  348. You see what

  349. they're doing?

  350. We'll dismiss

  351. everything

  352. on the basis

  353. of a technicality.

  354. What you're saying,

  355. Jesus,

  356. doesn't meet

  357. the legally

  358. accepted

  359. truth standards

  360. of our society,

  361. so we reject it.

  362. When Jesus pushes

  363. back hard again,

  364. verse 14,

  365. he said,

  366. you know,

  367. if you guys

  368. even had the

  369. slightest idea

  370. who I am,

  371. truth would not

  372. even be an issue.

  373. We wouldn't be

  374. having this conversation.

  375. verse 15,

  376. if you only talk

  377. about what's

  378. legally accepted,

  379. it's your words

  380. which have no

  381. legal worth,

  382. says Jesus,

  383. because your words

  384. are coming

  385. out of prejudice.

  386. Your judgments

  387. are being formed

  388. on the basis

  389. of untruth

  390. and your own

  391. feelings.

  392. And he goes on

  393. in verse 15,

  394. 16,

  395. 17,

  396. 18,

  397. and I'm just

  398. going to touch

  399. very,

  400. very briefly on it,

  401. and he's really

  402. saying,

  403. look,

  404. in actual fact,

  405. if you only argue

  406. legal technicalities,

  407. I'm telling you now

  408. that all legal

  409. requirements for truth

  410. have been met.

  411. And it goes

  412. something like this.

  413. I've just said

  414. that I'm light.

  415. By virtue of

  416. that statement,

  417. light doesn't

  418. need to be proved.

  419. It just shines.

  420. You just see it.

  421. it proves itself

  422. by dispelling

  423. darkness.

  424. You understand

  425. the argument?

  426. You don't have to say,

  427. well,

  428. possibly there's

  429. light in this room.

  430. Well,

  431. we know there's

  432. light in this room

  433. because there's

  434. not darkness.

  435. And more than

  436. that,

  437. says Jesus,

  438. I've told you

  439. before that it's

  440. the Father of

  441. himself who

  442. corroborates me

  443. as a witness.

  444. So they

  445. counterattack again.

  446. Tempting to

  447. discredit Jesus

  448. as not being

  449. of suitable

  450. character to

  451. claim any

  452. authority by

  453. reminding Jesus

  454. that in their

  455. eyes he was

  456. illegitimate.

  457. Verse 18,

  458. oh,

  459. verse 19,

  460. they said to

  461. him,

  462. therefore,

  463. where is your

  464. father?

  465. You see what

  466. they're doing?

  467. They're finding

  468. a way to get

  469. out from under

  470. the burden that

  471. Jesus is loading

  472. on them.

  473. So they're

  474. suggesting in

  475. there,

  476. oh,

  477. yes,

  478. let's just

  479. talk about

  480. your father

  481. for a minute

  482. or two,

  483. Jesus.

  484. Actually,

  485. hmm,

  486. you don't even

  487. know who

  488. your father

  489. is,

  490. really,

  491. do you?

  492. Jesus pushed

  493. back again.

  494. Listen,

  495. you guys,

  496. it's you

  497. who are not

  498. of suitable

  499. character to

  500. make judgments

  501. rejecting me.

  502. Why?

  503. because you

  504. guys don't

  505. know me

  506. or the

  507. father.

  508. And so

  509. in verse 20,

  510. we feel

  511. something of

  512. how Jesus

  513. has them

  514. boxed in.

  515. They're

  516. absolutely

  517. robable

  518. with Jesus.

  519. They can

  520. feel that

  521. Jesus is

  522. snatching away

  523. their sovereignty.

  524. And what's

  525. their only

  526. option?

  527. Either to

  528. give up

  529. their sovereignty

  530. or to

  531. do what

  532. they've

  533. done.

  534. To go

  535. back to

  536. the other

  537. option for

  538. protecting

  539. personal

  540. sovereignty,

  541. and that

  542. is getting

  543. rid of

  544. the person

  545. who challenges

  546. it.

  547. And so

  548. in their

  549. hearts,

  550. at least,

  551. they're thinking,

  552. jeepers,

  553. we really do

  554. need to get

  555. in and kill

  556. this bloke.

  557. That's the

  558. only way

  559. we're going

  560. to silence

  561. them and

  562. take the

  563. pressure off,

  564. remove his

  565. challenge.

  566. But then

  567. verse 21,

  568. Jesus continues

  569. to push

  570. them, and

  571. he pushes

  572. them really

  573. hard.

  574. He says

  575. to them

  576. effectively,

  577. reject me

  578. and you

  579. will die

  580. in your

  581. sin.

  582. There's

  583. consequences,

  584. says Jesus,

  585. for continued

  586. unbelief.

  587. I am

  588. God's

  589. king.

  590. I am

  591. God's

  592. savior.

  593. The one

  594. you have

  595. been seeking

  596. all along,

  597. the one

  598. you search

  599. the scriptures

  600. for daily.

  601. Let me

  602. tell you,

  603. says Jesus,

  604. soon I

  605. will return

  606. to heaven

  607. having

  608. completed

  609. my

  610. salvation

  611. mission.

  612. And if

  613. you reject

  614. me,

  615. continuing

  616. to seek

  617. and search

  618. for a

  619. Messiah who

  620. sits

  621. comfortably

  622. with your

  623. expectations

  624. and your

  625. understanding

  626. of what

  627. Messiah would

  628. look like

  629. and what

  630. Messiah would

  631. do,

  632. then I'm

  633. telling you

  634. now,

  635. says Jesus,

  636. you will

  637. die in

  638. your sin.

  639. You'll be

  640. excluded from

  641. heaven.

  642. You won't be

  643. able to go

  644. where I'm

  645. going to

  646. in spite of

  647. a lifetime

  648. of sincere

  649. religious actions.

  650. Verse 22,

  651. what do they do

  652. in response

  653. again?

  654. they mock

  655. Jesus.

  656. Will he

  657. kill

  658. himself?

  659. They defend

  660. their sovereignty

  661. again by

  662. mocking Jesus.

  663. See,

  664. these are

  665. guys who

  666. were the

  667. professors of

  668. Old Testament

  669. Scripture.

  670. They would

  671. have known

  672. the dozens

  673. and dozens

  674. of verses

  675. that described

  676. Messiah as

  677. the suffering

  678. servant who

  679. would die

  680. for the sins

  681. of God's

  682. people.

  683. What do they

  684. do?

  685. They choose

  686. to take

  687. Jesus' words

  688. as a suggestion

  689. of suicide.

  690. Now,

  691. in their eyes,

  692. in the eyes of

  693. the law,

  694. anybody that

  695. committed suicide

  696. would go to

  697. hell because

  698. they were guilty

  699. of the sin

  700. of self-murder.

  701. So,

  702. what they're

  703. doing to

  704. Jesus is

  705. saying,

  706. listen,

  707. Jesus,

  708. you're

  709. talking about

  710. us going

  711. to hell.

  712. Let me

  713. tell you

  714. in response,

  715. you're the

  716. one that's

  717. going to

  718. go to

  719. hell.

  720. It's

  721. amazing

  722. stuff,

  723. I reckon,

  724. if I'm

  725. writing the

  726. way I'm

  727. reading the

  728. text.

  729. And Jesus

  730. pushes back

  731. again,

  732. verses 23

  733. and 24.

  734. He really

  735. is pushing

  736. deep into

  737. them now,

  738. saying,

  739. look,

  740. he's exposing

  741. their lack

  742. of self-awareness.

  743. Verse 23

  744. and 24.

  745. He said

  746. to them,

  747. you are

  748. from below,

  749. I am from

  750. above.

  751. You are of

  752. this world,

  753. I am not

  754. of this

  755. world.

  756. I told

  757. you that

  758. you would

  759. die in

  760. your sins,

  761. for unless

  762. you believe

  763. that I

  764. am he,

  765. that I

  766. am Messiah,

  767. you will

  768. die in

  769. your sins.

  770. What's

  771. Jesus

  772. saying?

  773. Well,

  774. Jesus

  775. saying,

  776. look at

  777. the divide

  778. that's

  779. opening up

  780. between

  781. us.

  782. I am

  783. from the

  784. realm of

  785. God

  786. himself.

  787. And so

  788. says Jesus

  789. in effect,

  790. he says,

  791. I deal

  792. in truth.

  793. I deal

  794. in concern

  795. for God's

  796. glory and

  797. honor.

  798. I am on

  799. a mission

  800. given me

  801. by the

  802. Father,

  803. the mission

  804. of salvation.

  805. salvation.

  806. But you

  807. guys,

  808. you're

  809. ignorant of

  810. your own

  811. nature,

  812. a nature

  813. that means

  814. you're

  815. hardwired to

  816. move away

  817. from truth,

  818. to reject

  819. God.

  820. You're

  821. committed to

  822. your own

  823. sovereignty.

  824. You're on

  825. a mission

  826. too,

  827. but it's a

  828. self-salvation

  829. mission,

  830. to make

  831. yourself God,

  832. to be your

  833. own life and

  834. light through

  835. your own

  836. resources.

  837. Jesus,

  838. we're

  839. poles apart,

  840. says Jesus.

  841. And if

  842. you're going

  843. to hear me,

  844. you'll need to

  845. be polarized,

  846. because my

  847. message is a

  848. polarizing

  849. message.

  850. But let me

  851. tell you,

  852. says Jesus,

  853. interpreting his

  854. words here,

  855. it's going to

  856. end really

  857. badly if

  858. you continue

  859. to act

  860. unaware of

  861. your earthbound

  862. nature.

  863. It's going to

  864. end really

  865. badly,

  866. because you

  867. will one day

  868. face the full

  869. force of

  870. God's justice

  871. for your

  872. sins,

  873. every one of

  874. them.

  875. You can

  876. check through

  877. the reference

  878. of verse 21.

  879. Sin is

  880. singular,

  881. which means

  882. the sin of

  883. unbelief,

  884. but this

  885. time sin

  886. is plural.

  887. It's

  888. reflecting the

  889. idea of

  890. God's

  891. justice

  892. falling on

  893. people who

  894. are so

  895. culpable,

  896. guilty before

  897. him.

  898. A dreadful

  899. picture.

  900. Their

  901. response

  902. again?

  903. Verse 25.

  904. Who are

  905. you?

  906. Now, I

  907. don't think

  908. that was a

  909. genuine

  910. question of

  911. we need

  912. more information.

  913. It's more

  914. of a

  915. sneering.

  916. You are a

  917. nobody,

  918. and we do

  919. reject you.

  920. It's a good

  921. question.

  922. Who are you?

  923. It's a right

  924. question.

  925. It's the

  926. question that

  927. every single

  928. person needs

  929. to ask of

  930. Jesus.

  931. But these

  932. guys ask it

  933. with a

  934. sarcastic,

  935. unbelieving

  936. attitude,

  937. effectively saying,

  938. who are you

  939. to instruct

  940. us, the

  941. professors of

  942. religion, in

  943. things of

  944. salvation and

  945. heaven and

  946. hell?

  947. Who are you to

  948. suggest that we

  949. are blinded by

  950. prejudice and

  951. hardwired to

  952. reject God and

  953. anything offered

  954. to us by God?

  955. You can hear

  956. them saying,

  957. we're God's

  958. people.

  959. We're steeped in

  960. the traditions of

  961. the Old Testament

  962. scripture.

  963. We've spent our

  964. lives doing

  965. religious things to

  966. honor God and

  967. protect his name.

  968. And nothing you

  969. have said thus

  970. far, Jesus, will

  971. make us change our

  972. view, make us

  973. change our

  974. position.

  975. You are nobody

  976. in our eyes.

  977. And we reject

  978. you and your

  979. stated pathway to

  980. forgiveness and

  981. heaven.

  982. And Jesus comes

  983. back again.

  984. Very generously

  985. comes back.

  986. I will die for

  987. sin as I am

  988. lifted up,

  989. verses 26 through

  990. 29.

  991. And again,

  992. it's as if Jesus

  993. is saying to

  994. these guys,

  995. what more can I

  996. say?

  997. I have

  998. consistently,

  999. verse 26,

  1000. I have consistently

  1001. and repeatedly

  1002. told you the

  1003. truth my father

  1004. sent me to tell

  1005. you.

  1006. But you have

  1007. deliberately chosen

  1008. not to understand,

  1009. not even to try

  1010. and understand.

  1011. Why not?

  1012. Because you've

  1013. not liked what

  1014. you've heard.

  1015. And you're

  1016. backing your

  1017. own sovereignty.

  1018. Jesus then

  1019. goes on to

  1020. give them

  1021. the final

  1022. warning,

  1023. but it's also

  1024. laced with

  1025. hope and

  1026. generosity.

  1027. Verses 28 and

  1028. 29.

  1029. Jesus said to

  1030. them,

  1031. they will

  1032. eventually be

  1033. forced to

  1034. see what

  1035. they choose

  1036. now not to

  1037. see.

  1038. I will die,

  1039. says Jesus,

  1040. but not

  1041. because I

  1042. commit suicide

  1043. from a

  1044. sense of

  1045. defeat and

  1046. failure.

  1047. Rather,

  1048. I will die

  1049. because I

  1050. will be

  1051. lifted up

  1052. onto the

  1053. cross and

  1054. die as a

  1055. means of

  1056. securing your

  1057. forgiveness and

  1058. new life with

  1059. God.

  1060. And again,

  1061. Jesus

  1062. polarizes.

  1063. your glory,

  1064. the end

  1065. point of

  1066. your

  1067. determination to

  1068. keep your

  1069. sovereignty,

  1070. to be God,

  1071. to set your

  1072. own agenda for

  1073. acceptance with

  1074. God,

  1075. your glory will

  1076. be the shame

  1077. of crucifying

  1078. the Lord of

  1079. glory.

  1080. glory.

  1081. Jesus' glory,

  1082. by contrast,

  1083. would be the

  1084. pathway of

  1085. suffering,

  1086. rejection,

  1087. death,

  1088. resurrection,

  1089. ascension,

  1090. to be with

  1091. his father

  1092. forever.

  1093. And his

  1094. shame and

  1095. death would

  1096. be the means

  1097. of removing

  1098. shame,

  1099. darkness,

  1100. and death

  1101. from his

  1102. people.

  1103. His

  1104. death would

  1105. be the

  1106. light dispelling

  1107. darkness.

  1108. It would be

  1109. the light of

  1110. his life

  1111. shining deeply

  1112. into our

  1113. souls through

  1114. his Holy

  1115. Spirit.

  1116. It's quite

  1117. amazing that

  1118. in spite of

  1119. repeated

  1120. unbelief,

  1121. repeated

  1122. attempts by

  1123. these guys

  1124. to squirm

  1125. away from

  1126. what they

  1127. genuinely see

  1128. to be the

  1129. challenge against

  1130. their sovereignty

  1131. by Jesus,

  1132. Jesus keeps

  1133. on being

  1134. generous to

  1135. them.

  1136. He keeps

  1137. on offering

  1138. them hope

  1139. in spite of

  1140. their unbelief.

  1141. And it's as if

  1142. he's saying

  1143. here,

  1144. look,

  1145. you can

  1146. come to

  1147. me for

  1148. light and

  1149. life now,

  1150. or you

  1151. can pursue

  1152. your own

  1153. sovereignty and

  1154. self-salvation

  1155. and then you'll

  1156. find out the

  1157. truth about me

  1158. down the track

  1159. of it,

  1160. but it

  1161. will be

  1162. too late

  1163. to benefit

  1164. from the

  1165. truth.

  1166. And the

  1167. final word

  1168. in this

  1169. offensive message

  1170. from Jesus,

  1171. John tells

  1172. us,

  1173. it's almost

  1174. understated in

  1175. the verse

  1176. 30 here,

  1177. many believed,

  1178. many believed.

  1179. In spite of

  1180. persistent unbelief

  1181. on the part of

  1182. high-profile

  1183. individuals,

  1184. many find

  1185. Jesus so

  1186. compelling,

  1187. so freeing,

  1188. that they

  1189. believed,

  1190. they gave up

  1191. their personal

  1192. sovereignty to

  1193. experience the

  1194. life-changing

  1195. light he offers

  1196. freely to

  1197. anyone who

  1198. will come

  1199. under his

  1200. sovereignty.

  1201. So it

  1202. says in the

  1203. front of

  1204. the bulletin,

  1205. let's not

  1206. hang back,

  1207. let's not

  1208. hold back

  1209. from the

  1210. light of

  1211. Jesus,

  1212. because his

  1213. light shows

  1214. up our

  1215. dirtiness and

  1216. brokenness.

  1217. Let's not

  1218. stay in the

  1219. dark, just

  1220. sort of nursing

  1221. that brokenness

  1222. and dirtiness,

  1223. sort of

  1224. comfortable with

  1225. ourselves and

  1226. yet miserable

  1227. in ourselves.

  1228. Let's not

  1229. do that,

  1230. let's come

  1231. to the

  1232. light and

  1233. have all

  1234. that misery

  1235. dispelled.

  1236. Because apart

  1237. from believing

  1238. in Jesus,

  1239. there is only

  1240. darkness.

  1241. What is

  1242. darkness?

  1243. Well,

  1244. darkness by

  1245. definition is

  1246. the absence

  1247. of light.

  1248. No matter

  1249. how real,

  1250. how sincere

  1251. your religious

  1252. actions might

  1253. be,

  1254. unless you

  1255. have light

  1256. and Jesus'

  1257. light is

  1258. total,

  1259. then you're

  1260. in darkness.

  1261. Through

  1262. chapter 6

  1263. and 7

  1264. and now

  1265. to chapter

  1266. 8,

  1267. Jesus has

  1268. been saying

  1269. this over

  1270. and over

  1271. and over

  1272. again.

  1273. He said,

  1274. I am the

  1275. bread of

  1276. life.

  1277. I am the

  1278. thirst quenching

  1279. water you

  1280. long for.

  1281. I am the

  1282. light of

  1283. life you

  1284. in your

  1285. lost state

  1286. so desperately

  1287. need.

  1288. I am

  1289. everything you

  1290. need.

  1291. Give up

  1292. your sovereignty

  1293. and come

  1294. under my

  1295. sovereignty

  1296. to experience

  1297. all of that.

  1298. Final

  1299. sentence,

  1300. for those of

  1301. us who are

  1302. already committed

  1303. to living under

  1304. the sovereignty

  1305. of Jesus,

  1306. then each

  1307. one of us

  1308. needs to be

  1309. looking into

  1310. our own

  1311. hearts and

  1312. exposing those

  1313. areas where

  1314. they will be

  1315. there,

  1316. where we are

  1317. still determined

  1318. to maintain

  1319. our own

  1320. sovereignty

  1321. against the

  1322. sovereignty of

  1323. Jesus.

  1324. Those areas

  1325. where we keep

  1326. them to

  1327. ourselves and

  1328. we don't

  1329. want the

  1330. gospel to

  1331. shine in

  1332. them,

  1333. those areas

  1334. of darkness

  1335. and sin

  1336. because we

  1337. still like

  1338. them,

  1339. we still

  1340. want to

  1341. dabble in

  1342. them

  1343. rather than

  1344. living in

  1345. the light

  1346. and life

  1347. of Jesus.

  1348. let me

  1349. pray.

  1350. Lord,

  1351. burn these

  1352. strong,

  1353. offensive

  1354. words deeply

  1355. into our

  1356. hearts.

  1357. We don't

  1358. like the

  1359. notion of

  1360. giving up

  1361. sovereignty.

  1362. We are

  1363. hardwired to

  1364. make ourselves

  1365. sovereign.

  1366. So help us,

  1367. Lord, to give

  1368. up our

  1369. sovereignty,

  1370. give up that

  1371. which has

  1372. failed us

  1373. ultimately,

  1374. for a

  1375. sovereignty

  1376. that will

  1377. never fail

  1378. us but

  1379. will feed

  1380. us and

  1381. quench our

  1382. thirst and

  1383. give us

  1384. light to

  1385. find our

  1386. way home

  1387. to heaven.

  1388. Amen.
