  1. So we're looking at John chapter 7 this morning, first 36 verses.

    John 7 chapter mention

  2. If you're a visitor here, you can see the outline of what I'm saying on the back of the sheet you get handed when you come in the door this morning.

  3. Now, according to critics, timing is everything in politics and public life.

  4. And we see that, don't we, all the time.

  5. So we've had a charm offensive by Mr. Morrison, our new Prime Minister, immediately following his political assassination of our previous Prime Minister, Mr. Turnbull.

  6. And we all know what that's about.

  7. It's designed to quieten or avoid the hard questions that everybody wants to ask.

  8. But of course it never works, does it?

  9. Or rarely works.

  10. And that's where it takes us into chapter 7 of John this morning, because it's the hard questions around Jesus that John wants us to wrestle with as he takes us into Jesus' public ministry, which is what he's doing.

  11. And they are hard questions.

  12. There were lots of things happening, lots of people watching and debating with Jesus,

  13. and lots of conclusions about Jesus being formed by different individuals and groups within the crowd.

  14. And John wants us to be, as it were, part of that.

  15. The hard questions about Jesus won't go away.

  16. The hard questions of Jesus today, we find, are actually the same hard questions that we need to face today about Jesus.

  17. So, who is he?

  18. Who is this Jesus that presents and makes these outlandish claims?

  19. What's he about?

  20. When you drill down into his message, what really is he about?

  21. Is what he says to be trusted?

  22. If we follow him, he says we'll have life, salvation, forgiveness.

  23. Is he to be trusted?

  24. And then on the other hand, all the negative things creep in.

  25. Well, if as he said he was, he was God, then how come so many people reject him?

  26. How come there's so much unbelief?

  27. How come he allowed himself to be treated like he was treated?

  28. How come he was rejected?

  29. How come he was killed?

  30. And then the ultimate question that John wants us to wrestle with is a personal question.

  31. So, what conclusion will I form about Jesus?

  32. 2,000 years after this biography was written.

  33. And they're hard questions, aren't they?

  34. Hard because they're hard to understand.

  35. But hard because of the implications of the conclusions we form.

  36. And even if you're already a Christian this morning, you still need to drill down into that idea of you being a Christian.

  37. You need to drill down into your own conclusions about Jesus.

  38. You say, well, I'm a Christian, therefore I've already concluded that what Jesus says is true.

  39. And I've committed myself to him.

  40. But then the question arises, well, have you?

  41. Have you really?

  42. In other words, is your faith real?

  43. Is your faith in line with what Jesus says it should be if you're going to be a believer in him?

  44. Or is it possible even as you claim to be a believer, you're actually living under a form of self-deception?

  45. So, for example, do you actually believe and trust on Jesus on his terms?

  46. As he says, as he talks about himself and talks about salvation.

  47. Or is it possible that you just believe in a form of Jesus?

  48. That is, you've taken various bits and pieces of Jesus that you sit comfortably with.

  49. And have actually rejected various bits and pieces of Jesus that are altogether too challenging.

  50. Or that require you to give up too much or change too much.

  51. See, as Christians we do that all the time, don't we?

  52. And the problem with that is that Jesus said that too amounts to unbelief.

  53. We'll see that coming out of these verses this morning.

  54. As we move into chapter 7.

  55. Context, as always, is critical to understanding.

  56. So, the context is this.

  57. People loved the miracles that Jesus was doing.

  58. No doubt about that.

  59. They flocked to him to see the miracles.

  60. This was really special stuff.

  61. Loved every moment of it.

  62. But, increasingly rejected the conclusions Jesus pushed on them as a result of the miracles.

  63. They were taking the miracles and saying,

  64. Oh, this is what we'll believe about Jesus and the like of the miracles.

  65. Jesus said, No.

  66. If you look at the miracles, this is what you need to believe and respond to about me.

  67. And that gap was opening up.

  68. Into opposition.

  69. Into opposition.

  70. And hatred.

  71. And outright rejection.

  72. Chapter 4 and 5.

  73. We've seen it a few weeks ago.

  74. Jesus had actually left Jerusalem and Judea.

  75. Now, Judea was the southern part of Israel.

  76. Why he had left there?

  77. Because the Jewish religious authorities, none less than them,

  78. the Jewish religious authorities had decided that Jesus was a blasphemous imposter.

  79. And that they would kill him.

  80. That was their conclusion.

  81. Then chapter 6.

  82. In time, it was a few months later.

  83. Jesus had moved north to the northern part of Israel called Galilee.

  84. And we find that only a few months later, history had repeated itself.

  85. The crowds that flocked him in Galilee now, in chapter 6, have almost all abandoned him.

  86. Why?

  87. Why?

  88. Well, they too, once they started to hear Jesus' teaching after the feeding of 5,000,

  89. they too said, well, actually, this Jesus is talking about a spiritual salvation.

  90. He wants to be a spiritual Messiah.

  91. And quite frankly, when our biggest enemy is the Romans, we don't really have any need for a spiritual Messiah.

  92. We don't even have any interest in a spiritual Messiah.

  93. We don't like this nonsense of bread from heaven and internal changes and stuff like that.

  94. And so they walked away from Jesus.

  95. That was their conclusion.

  96. He was irrelevant to their needs.

  97. And chapter 7, we step into chapter 7, and there's another gap of a few months.

  98. So from the start of chapter 7, it's about six months since the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000.

  99. And we're told in verse 1, Jesus had been going about in Galilee.

  100. I think that word just means Jesus has been on the move.

  101. He was flying under the radar, trying to keep a low profile,

  102. because of the hostility that was rising against him.

  103. In verse 2, we come up against a significant moment.

  104. Decisions are going to have to be made.

  105. It was the Feast of the Booth, or Feast of the Tabernacles.

  106. And that was the most important and the most popular,

  107. sorry, the most popular, not the most important,

  108. the most popular of all the Jewish religious festivals.

  109. And it was a time of happiness and excitement,

  110. because it incorporated something that we would call a Thanksgiving, a harvest Thanksgiving.

  111. It happened after the intake of the annual harvest.

  112. The food was all stored for winter, so it was a time to celebrate.

  113. But predominantly, it remembered God's provision for his people in the wilderness

  114. after the exodus from Egypt and on their journey to the Promised Land.

  115. And so, as I said, it was an exciting, happy time.

  116. It was a week-long celebration.

  117. And huge crowds went to Jerusalem for ten days or so of celebrating God's provision.

  118. Ten days of enjoying the sense of being God's people together.

  119. Ten days of looking to the future that the exodus had promised them,

  120. which they'd never quite materialized for them.

  121. And Jesus' disciples see an opportunity and think that they should go too,

  122. because this is Jesus' moment.

  123. This is his moment to showcase himself to the crowds.

  124. And suddenly, in chapter 7, verse 2 again, the question, the hard question, surfaces, resurfaces.

  125. Is it only a matter of time?

  126. It's now six months or more since Jesus was last in Jerusalem,

  127. and left because the crowds were going to kill him.

  128. So, is it a case now, well, having had six months to think about Jesus

  129. and get used to what he was saying and stuff like that,

  130. will the crowds and will the Jewish religious authorities now warn to Jesus?

  131. Will things be different?

  132. Will they understand him better when he goes back to Jerusalem?

  133. On the other side of that coin, will Jesus do things differently,

  134. getting a second bite at the cherry, as it were?

  135. Well, the answer as we move into chapter 7,

  136. the answer John gives is a very loud no.

  137. Nothing is going to be different.

  138. Because the problem, as John has emphasized repeatedly,

  139. is not a lack of time to consider what Jesus has been saying.

  140. It's not a lack of time to ponder and troll over the evidence.

  141. It's not in how Jesus has presented himself.

  142. The real problem, John wants to see over and over and over again,

  143. the real problem is in hearts that refuse to accept Jesus on his terms.

  144. That's what it comes down to.

  145. Hearts that refuse to accept Jesus on his terms as God's Messiah,

  146. God's King and Savior.

  147. And we'll see that playing out again in these verses

  148. as we move into, first of all, the family response,

  149. which is pragmatic enthusiasm covering general unbelief.

  150. Now, we've got a sort of feel for Jesus at this point.

  151. John has zoomed through chapter 6.

  152. Massive crowds, incredible interest in Jesus.

  153. Then at the end of chapter 6, we're left with not much more than just the 12 disciples.

  154. Crowds are gone.

  155. And now, we zoom in even further,

  156. and the word here in chapter 3 is his brothers.

  157. Now, it's a little bit ambiguous,

  158. but I'm taking it to mean his actual literal biological brothers.

  159. They have a turn now to express their conclusions about Jesus.

  160. And they're no different from the crowd.

  161. Not really.

  162. They had no doubt.

  163. It was just a matter of timing and packaging.

  164. And so, they're saying the festival in Jerusalem,

  165. that's the opportunity.

  166. All right, Jesus, you need to go there.

  167. You need to go there as soon as possible.

  168. This is your moment.

  169. If you farm this right, Jesus, you can turn things around.

  170. You win the crowd back.

  171. You can be popular.

  172. You can be successful.

  173. You need to get out there and sell your message.

  174. Just like enthusiastic political campaign managers,

  175. they think that success for Jesus lies in more exposure to the public.

  176. Show yourself to be a patriot.

  177. This is the time to go there and do a charm offensive,

  178. being a patriot in Jerusalem.

  179. Display your miracles.

  180. Mount a popular grassroots campaign.

  181. Give people things that will help them and benefit them,

  182. and people will fall in line with you.

  183. Make sure it's your face and your message

  184. that appears every evening on the 6 o'clock Jerusalem news

  185. for that 10 days of the festival.

  186. But buried in that enthusiasm, verse 5,

  187. was unbelief.

  188. They weren't convinced by what they saw and heard from Jesus.

  189. So part of urging Jesus to go back to Jerusalem

  190. was to kind of convince themselves.

  191. They had really no idea what Jesus was on about.

  192. Even worse, from our vantage point as readers,

  193. we can see that these brothers,

  194. these biological brothers,

  195. were pushing Jesus to his death,

  196. and they just didn't even realize they were doing it.

  197. How sad that must have been for Jesus

  198. to hear his brothers speaking,

  199. saying, go to Jerusalem.

  200. We'll get you up there as quickly as we can.

  201. And Jesus knew what the outcome of being in Jerusalem was going to be.

  202. So we get Jesus' response then to his brothers.

  203. And again, we see this stark contrast,

  204. which John wants us to see,

  205. as we engage with Jesus.

  206. Because primarily, that's what we need to do through these verses,

  207. is engage with Jesus.

  208. And Jesus' response shows him to be purposeful,

  209. faithful in his commitment to saving God's people.

  210. Jesus pushes back at his brothers,

  211. and he said, well, actually, guys,

  212. you're telling me it's a question of timing,

  213. and you're right and you're wrong.

  214. It is a question of timing,

  215. but it's a question of God's timing,

  216. not your timing.

  217. See, the brothers had no idea about God's agenda,

  218. and how the next few months would play out for Jesus.

  219. And it's only six or seven or eight months from this point

  220. to Jesus actually killed on the cross.

  221. But ironically,

  222. given the nature of the feast and the festival

  223. and what it was celebrating,

  224. ironically, if they had actually understood what Jesus was teaching,

  225. they would have realized that the festival they were keen to be part of

  226. actually described Jesus' mission.

  227. He was the greater than Moses,

  228. the prophet who was to come.

  229. He had come to mount another exodus,

  230. to lead another exodus event,

  231. to rescue his people from the world.

  232. Everything that is opposed to God

  233. and holds his people in bondage.

  234. So in a sense,

  235. what Jesus is in here,

  236. in this festival,

  237. is a real live drama

  238. of working in parallel

  239. with what he's going to endure,

  240. what he's there for.

  241. But of course,

  242. nobody sees that except Jesus.

  243. Jesus had come into the world

  244. to expose evil and sin and death

  245. and deliver his people into light and life.

  246. Jesus is saying here in these verses,

  247. all this will become clear in due course.

  248. But in the meanwhile,

  249. no amount of charm offensive

  250. or populist politicking

  251. will change anything.

  252. Jesus will inevitably offend.

  253. Look at verse 6.

  254. My time has not yet come,

  255. but your time is always here.

  256. The world cannot hate you,

  257. but it hates me.

  258. Why?

  259. Because I testify about it

  260. that its works are evil.

  261. There's an inevitable clash

  262. of agendas,

  263. a clash of worldviews,

  264. a clash of wills,

  265. a clash of thinking,

  266. a clash of desires.

  267. Jesus will inevitably offend people,

  268. causing them to hate him

  269. because he will expose

  270. and deliver them

  271. from the very things

  272. that people want to keep hidden.

  273. Rebellion

  274. and unbelieving hearts and attitudes.

  275. But Jesus is God's man,

  276. driven by God's concern

  277. for God's glory.

  278. And that's what we need to see.

  279. In spite of what he knows

  280. he's ahead of,

  281. Jesus doesn't turn

  282. to the left or right.

  283. He plows ahead

  284. because he's God's man,

  285. driven by concern

  286. for God's glory.

  287. Look at verse 10.

  288. We're just going to skim over

  289. some verses very quickly now.

  290. Jesus does go to Jerusalem

  291. in the end.

  292. But the point here,

  293. I think,

  294. is that he goes to Jerusalem

  295. on his terms.

  296. And again,

  297. immediately starts teaching,

  298. pushing the crowd

  299. to believe his claim

  300. to be God's king and savior.

  301. verses 16, 17, and 18.

  302. They recognize his authority

  303. as he teaches.

  304. They admire his teaching

  305. and his authority.

  306. And Jesus tells them

  307. his purpose,

  308. his mission,

  309. is not in any way

  310. to showcase himself,

  311. but his life

  312. and his mission

  313. and his very being

  314. is driven

  315. by the Father's purpose

  316. in salvation.

  317. He's here to implement

  318. his Father's purpose

  319. in salvation.

  320. He speaks truth

  321. from his Father.

  322. And the fact

  323. that they do not respond

  324. to Jesus in belief

  325. shows they have

  326. lost touch with God.

  327. And lost touch

  328. with God's purpose

  329. in salvation

  330. as written

  331. in their Jewish scriptures.

  332. The divide opens again.

  333. Verses 27, 28, and 29.

  334. Same sort of thought.

  335. Jesus says,

  336. well look,

  337. your response

  338. tells me one thing.

  339. You've only got

  340. a very superficial understanding

  341. of who I am.

  342. You think you know

  343. everything about me,

  344. but you don't.

  345. And so, says Jesus,

  346. no surprise.

  347. You do not see me

  348. as God's Savior

  349. because you're so focused

  350. on running your own agenda.

  351. Same problem.

  352. We've seen chapter

  353. after chapter

  354. after chapter.

  355. Verses 32 through 36.

  356. Jesus will accomplish

  357. his mission.

  358. verse 33.

  359. Jesus then said,

  360. I will be with you

  361. a little longer

  362. and then I'm going

  363. to him who sent me.

  364. I'm here for a job.

  365. I'll do the job.

  366. And then I'm going

  367. back home to my father.

  368. That's the plan.

  369. And the plan

  370. will be perfected.

  371. And hidden in there

  372. is Jesus saying

  373. to the Jewish

  374. religious authorities

  375. who remember

  376. at that very moment

  377. were planning to kill him.

  378. He's really saying to them,

  379. now look,

  380. you guys,

  381. you think you know

  382. all about me.

  383. You think you control

  384. my destiny,

  385. but I'm telling you

  386. that you evil people

  387. will never control

  388. my life

  389. and my destiny.

  390. Regardless of what

  391. it appears like,

  392. regardless of what

  393. they think,

  394. Jesus,

  395. he's on God's mission,

  396. on God's timing

  397. and will complete it.

  398. And so,

  399. the irony again is,

  400. and there's lots of irony

  401. in this passage,

  402. the irony is

  403. that the brothers

  404. unknowingly said

  405. to Jesus,

  406. go up to Jerusalem

  407. and show yourself

  408. to the world.

  409. Jesus is saying here,

  410. yes,

  411. he says,

  412. I will be showing

  413. myself to the world.

  414. But when that moment

  415. comes,

  416. I'll be showing

  417. myself in shame

  418. of death

  419. by execution

  420. as a criminal.

  421. It will be a

  422. sacrificial death.

  423. It will be a death

  424. of apparent defeat.

  425. It will be a special

  426. death in the sense

  427. that nobody else

  428. can follow me

  429. into this particular

  430. death because it is

  431. a sacrificial death

  432. for the forgiveness

  433. of sins.

  434. But then,

  435. says Jesus,

  436. I'll return to heaven

  437. with my Father.

  438. And again,

  439. something that sinful

  440. people will be

  441. excluded from.

  442. I will show myself

  443. to the world,

  444. says Jesus.

  445. But even then,

  446. you're not going to

  447. be able to understand

  448. what it's about.

  449. And then we have

  450. the popular response,

  451. commitment to

  452. faithless unbelief

  453. towards Jesus.

  454. Now once again,

  455. John gives us

  456. a very wide range

  457. of unbelieving

  458. responses to Jesus.

  459. And that's been

  460. his pattern right

  461. through.

  462. And so,

  463. in a sense,

  464. there's a lot

  465. of repetition,

  466. but it's nuanced.

  467. Verse 11.

  468. There's nothing

  469. very nuanced

  470. about this.

  471. The religious leaders

  472. were planning

  473. to kill Jesus.

  474. Worse than that,

  475. they were actually

  476. openly promising

  477. to kill Jesus.

  478. And worse than that,

  479. even,

  480. verse 13,

  481. they had

  482. implemented a

  483. fear campaign,

  484. I think,

  485. because it was not

  486. just going to kill

  487. Jesus,

  488. but it was anybody

  489. associated with Jesus.

  490. Look at verse 13.

  491. Yet for fear of the

  492. Jews,

  493. and when John uses

  494. that term,

  495. he's usually talking

  496. about the Jewish

  497. religious leader,

  498. yet for fear of the

  499. Jews,

  500. no one spoke openly

  501. of him.

  502. Everybody had an

  503. opinion about Jesus.

  504. Everybody was talking,

  505. but they were scared.

  506. Scared of what?

  507. Scared to associate

  508. with Jesus,

  509. because they knew

  510. that Jewish religious

  511. leaders were going

  512. to kill Jesus,

  513. and most likely,

  514. if you're closely

  515. associated with Jesus,

  516. you might actually

  517. get dragged into the

  518. mess.

  519. That's a pretty strong

  520. response of unbelief.

  521. Not just a decision

  522. for themselves,

  523. but a decision

  524. they were imposing

  525. on people around them,

  526. the nation around them.

  527. The people who were

  528. supposed to instruct

  529. and lead into truth.

  530. Verse 12.

  531. Everybody had an

  532. opinion about Jesus,

  533. and it seems very

  534. modern, doesn't it?

  535. So some people,

  536. on the one hand,

  537. were saying,

  538. well actually,

  539. he's a good man.

  540. It's hard to find fault

  541. with a guy.

  542. After all,

  543. look at all the good

  544. things he's doing.

  545. He's bringing benefit

  546. into the community,

  547. and he's not harming

  548. anybody,

  549. so let's just leave

  550. well enough alone.

  551. Yep.

  552. He's a good bloke.

  553. The other extreme,

  554. again,

  555. very familiar,

  556. he's a deceiver.

  557. He's leading people

  558. astray.

  559. He's not a good man.

  560. He's a bad man.

  561. He's leading people

  562. to believe something

  563. that's not true.

  564. He's giving people

  565. a hope of life

  566. and salvation

  567. that's not right

  568. according to how

  569. we understand the law.

  570. Very familiar responses,

  571. aren't they?

  572. Verses 19 to 24,

  573. Jesus takes up

  574. the big issue

  575. that the Jews

  576. had with him.

  577. The issue of

  578. claiming that

  579. Jesus was a lawbreaker

  580. and a blasphemer.

  581. Well,

  582. Jesus really takes

  583. the case to them

  584. and rubbishes their claim.

  585. He's really saying

  586. to them here,

  587. I think,

  588. in these verses.

  589. Look,

  590. you're challenging

  591. about me being a lawbreaker

  592. because that's just

  593. really petty.

  594. Worse than that,

  595. it's illogical.

  596. Worse than that,

  597. you're just using it

  598. as an excuse,

  599. another reason not to believe.

  600. Here's how it worked.

  601. So,

  602. they say that Jesus

  603. should be condemned

  604. and put to death

  605. because he breaks the law.

  606. Remember,

  607. he healed a guy,

  608. the last time he was

  609. in Jerusalem,

  610. some six or seven

  611. or eight months earlier,

  612. he healed a guy

  613. on the Sunday,

  614. on the Sabbath.

  615. Right?

  616. And for that,

  617. they say,

  618. they were furious.

  619. He needs to die.

  620. He's got total disregard

  621. for the law of Moses.

  622. He breaks the law.

  623. But Jesus,

  624. I think,

  625. is picking up here.

  626. Well,

  627. actually,

  628. you guys forgot

  629. that you're deliberately

  630. plotting my murder

  631. right at this very moment.

  632. You blame me

  633. for breaking the law,

  634. but you also

  635. fail to keep the law.

  636. But then,

  637. more immediately,

  638. he's saying,

  639. well,

  640. look,

  641. this whole thing

  642. about breaking the law

  643. in regard to the Sabbath

  644. because I healed this guy,

  645. he uses an argument

  646. against him.

  647. He says,

  648. well,

  649. actually,

  650. you guys allow

  651. the circumcision

  652. of a child

  653. on the Sabbath

  654. if that circumcision

  655. falls on the eighth day

  656. to fulfill the law.

  657. The law said

  658. you have to circumcise

  659. the child on the eighth day.

  660. So,

  661. Jesus was saying,

  662. well,

  663. okay,

  664. you guys allow circumcision

  665. in that event

  666. even though technically

  667. circumcision

  668. is a breach of the law

  669. because it's working.

  670. So,

  671. he said,

  672. how can you logically

  673. then say to me

  674. because I healed

  675. a guy on a Sabbath

  676. which again

  677. is technically

  678. a breach

  679. but doing something

  680. really good.

  681. How can you hold

  682. that against me?

  683. What he's saying is

  684. you guys

  685. are just illogical.

  686. You're just

  687. finding reasons

  688. to

  689. not believe.

  690. And then buried in there,

  691. others thought

  692. he had a mental health issue,

  693. wasn't thinking straight.

  694. But Jesus pushes back again

  695. suggesting

  696. they're the ones

  697. who are not thinking straight.

  698. Do not judge

  699. by appearances

  700. but judge

  701. with right judgment.

  702. He's pleading

  703. for fairness

  704. and generosity.

  705. Again,

  706. he's saying,

  707. look,

  708. if only you would

  709. actually give me a go,

  710. you would see

  711. and understand

  712. and be drawn

  713. into truth

  714. and ultimately

  715. drawn into life.

  716. But instead,

  717. all they were given

  718. Jesus was

  719. prejudice

  720. and pettiness.

  721. But among all those

  722. responses,

  723. verse 31,

  724. John's always keen

  725. to remind us,

  726. yet many of the people

  727. believed in him.

  728. They said,

  729. when the Christ appears,

  730. will he do more signs

  731. than this man has done?

  732. In the midst of

  733. massive belief

  734. and confusion,

  735. some are actually

  736. moving towards

  737. belief.

  738. This doesn't

  739. necessarily suggest

  740. that people are actually

  741. Christians at that point,

  742. but they're moving

  743. towards belief

  744. because they're actually

  745. being generous

  746. and logical

  747. and fair

  748. in the way they're

  749. viewing their evidence.

  750. They're saying,

  751. well, look,

  752. okay,

  753. can we imagine

  754. anybody else

  755. doing greater

  756. and more miraculous

  757. and wonderful things

  758. than what Jesus

  759. has been doing?

  760. No, we can't.

  761. The scriptures

  762. told us that

  763. when Messiah comes,

  764. he would do great

  765. and miraculous

  766. and wonderful things.

  767. Therefore,

  768. this has to be

  769. the Messiah.

  770. We don't understand

  771. everything there is

  772. to understand about him,

  773. but this has to be

  774. the Messiah.

  775. So they're moving

  776. towards Jesus

  777. and they're moving

  778. into deeper

  779. and deeper belief.

  780. So what do we need

  781. to learn

  782. from this part

  783. of the story?

  784. There's lots more

  785. details,

  786. I just don't have time

  787. to get into there.

  788. But what do we need

  789. to learn

  790. from this part

  791. of the story?

  792. Well, I just want

  793. to touch down

  794. a couple of things

  795. and they're fairly

  796. arbitrary in lots of ways.

  797. So you're free

  798. to interact with them

  799. and even reject them

  800. if you don't think

  801. they're right.

  802. But the first one

  803. is this.

  804. Unbelief does not

  805. always mean

  806. rejecting Jesus outright.

  807. Unbelief does not

  808. always mean

  809. rejecting Jesus outright.

  810. But it is always

  811. resisting the terms

  812. and agenda

  813. for salvation

  814. offered by Jesus.

  815. And it is always

  816. about implementing

  817. our own values

  818. and judgments

  819. as to what will

  820. please God

  821. and make us

  822. acceptable to him.

  823. So, we sometimes

  824. don't help ourselves

  825. by thinking

  826. well, unbelief

  827. equals walking

  828. away from Jesus

  829. completely.

  830. It's not always

  831. like that.

  832. It's much more

  833. nuanced.

  834. It's possible

  835. to stay in the

  836. Christ

  837. and to believe

  838. but reject

  839. the terms

  840. that Jesus offers.

  841. believers.

  842. And it's not only

  843. possible

  844. but it's actually

  845. likely

  846. almost inevitably

  847. because we're hardwired

  848. to do that very thing.

  849. We're hardwired

  850. to reject

  851. truth.

  852. That's what it is

  853. to be sinful people.

  854. We're hardwired

  855. to reject

  856. anything

  857. that challenges

  858. our view of life

  859. and our understanding

  860. of life

  861. and our practice

  862. of life.

  863. And we're hardwired

  864. to do this

  865. even in the face

  866. of logic

  867. and truth

  868. and compelling

  869. evidence.

  870. Sometimes we

  871. I think

  872. when we read

  873. these texts

  874. we just read

  875. from a reader's

  876. perspective

  877. and think

  878. if these people

  879. only could see

  880. the big perspective

  881. over 2,000 years

  882. that we're seeing

  883. then they would have

  884. believed.

  885. Well not so

  886. says Jesus.

  887. And in fact

  888. the degree

  889. to which we

  890. oppose

  891. or modify

  892. or reject

  893. Jesus

  894. will be determined

  895. by how much

  896. we feel

  897. threatened

  898. by Jesus.

  899. How much

  900. we feel

  901. Jesus challenges

  902. our existing

  903. values

  904. and understanding

  905. of truth.

  906. So

  907. jumping from the text

  908. into our

  909. application here

  910. where did the

  911. most deep

  912. seated

  913. hatred

  914. and rejection

  915. of Jesus

  916. come from?

  917. It came from

  918. those who were

  919. most religious.

  920. religious.

  921. It came from

  922. people who knew

  923. the Old Testament

  924. scriptures

  925. inside out

  926. back to front.

  927. It could

  928. quote slabs

  929. of it

  930. whose very

  931. life work

  932. was teaching

  933. these things.

  934. Why did that

  935. hatred come from?

  936. Because they had

  937. nowhere to hide.

  938. Jesus was

  939. totally dismantling

  940. everything

  941. that they

  942. defined

  943. themselves

  944. by.

  945. Everything

  946. that they

  947. had lived

  948. their lives

  949. by.

  950. They thought

  951. well if

  952. only I do

  953. religious actions

  954. A, B, C and D

  955. then God

  956. will be pleased

  957. with me

  958. and God

  959. will actually

  960. be indebted

  961. with me.

  962. God will

  963. accept me

  964. because he

  965. has to

  966. accept me

  967. because I

  968. have honoured

  969. him.

  970. And Jesus

  971. comes at them

  972. and says

  973. no you're

  974. all wrong.

  975. Yes you

  976. believe that

  977. sincerely

  978. but you've

  979. been sincerely

  980. wrong.

  981. That's not

  982. how it

  983. works.

  984. they assumed

  985. that they

  986. had the

  987. ability and

  988. the desire

  989. to come to

  990. God and

  991. did so quite

  992. openly and

  993. again that God

  994. ought to be

  995. beholden to

  996. them.

  997. Jesus says

  998. well no

  999. you're hard

  1000. wired to

  1001. reject God

  1002. and you'll

  1003. only come

  1004. to God

  1005. if God

  1006. actually

  1007. does a

  1008. work in

  1009. your heart

  1010. and brings

  1011. you to

  1012. himself.

  1013. Jesus was

  1014. taking control

  1015. of their

  1016. salvation

  1017. away from

  1018. them and

  1019. making them

  1020. see that

  1021. salvation

  1022. could only

  1023. be by

  1024. grace and

  1025. not by

  1026. the works

  1027. of the

  1028. flesh or

  1029. by their

  1030. own

  1031. efforts.

  1032. And they

  1033. didn't like

  1034. that.

  1035. That was

  1036. undoing them.

  1037. That was

  1038. showing them

  1039. to be

  1040. wrong.

  1041. Their

  1042. choices?

  1043. Well

  1044. Jesus has

  1045. got to

  1046. go.

  1047. Jesus

  1048. teaches that

  1049. salvation is

  1050. inside out.

  1051. These guys

  1052. were saying

  1053. it's

  1054. outside in.

  1055. They had

  1056. no place

  1057. for God's

  1058. spirit because

  1059. they didn't

  1060. need God's

  1061. spirit to

  1062. renew their

  1063. hearts and

  1064. their

  1065. attitudes.

  1066. And then

  1067. other responses

  1068. were much

  1069. more moderate,

  1070. much more

  1071. subtle.

  1072. But they

  1073. reinterpret

  1074. Jesus to

  1075. the point

  1076. where those

  1077. who hold

  1078. those views

  1079. believe in

  1080. Jesus because

  1081. he's become

  1082. comfortable to

  1083. them.

  1084. And he

  1085. fits in

  1086. comfortably with

  1087. their own

  1088. terms.

  1089. So it

  1090. comes like

  1091. this in

  1092. a modern

  1093. take on

  1094. it.

  1095. It goes

  1096. something like

  1097. this and

  1098. you've heard

  1099. people say

  1100. this.

  1101. There's

  1102. people in

  1103. our church

  1104. I think

  1105. who say

  1106. this.

  1107. Well I

  1108. want to

  1109. believe in

  1110. Jesus.

  1111. I really

  1112. like it that

  1113. he points me

  1114. back to

  1115. serious

  1116. spirituality

  1117. and he

  1118. points me

  1119. to really

  1120. connect to

  1121. God and

  1122. pursue the

  1123. good life

  1124. that God

  1125. wants me

  1126. to have.

  1127. I really

  1128. like that

  1129. about Jesus.

  1130. But I

  1131. find it

  1132. really,

  1133. really difficult

  1134. to accept

  1135. that he

  1136. would judge

  1137. me as a

  1138. sinner.

  1139. Or indeed

  1140. that he

  1141. would threaten

  1142. me with

  1143. hell.

  1144. What right

  1145. has he to

  1146. do that?

  1147. Or that he

  1148. would say

  1149. to me there's

  1150. actually only a

  1151. very, very

  1152. narrow pathway

  1153. to life and

  1154. it involves

  1155. relationship with

  1156. Jesus and

  1157. involves a

  1158. complete change

  1159. of life, a

  1160. complete orientation.

  1161. I'm sure that

  1162. God has many

  1163. different pathways

  1164. to heaven and

  1165. life.

  1166. So I really

  1167. like this about

  1168. Jesus but I'm

  1169. not going to go

  1170. down that

  1171. pathway.

  1172. Or we

  1173. say that

  1174. Jesus died

  1175. for our

  1176. sin.

  1177. This is

  1178. very, very

  1179. real for us

  1180. here.

  1181. Sin's a big

  1182. thing, isn't

  1183. it?

  1184. It's a big

  1185. word for us

  1186. in our

  1187. church.

  1188. We say that

  1189. Jesus died

  1190. for our

  1191. sin.

  1192. Why did he

  1193. die for our

  1194. sin?

  1195. Because sin's

  1196. really serious.

  1197. Why is sin

  1198. really serious?

  1199. Because it

  1200. keeps us

  1201. from God.

  1202. It keeps

  1203. us from

  1204. enjoying

  1205. relationship

  1206. with God.

  1207. So here's

  1208. the question.

  1209. Which of

  1210. your sins

  1211. are you

  1212. protecting

  1213. and determined

  1214. to keep

  1215. because you

  1216. actually like

  1217. it?

  1218. Yes, you'll

  1219. give up a

  1220. sin over

  1221. here or

  1222. over here

  1223. but this

  1224. one here,

  1225. no, I

  1226. actually rather

  1227. like it and

  1228. I'm not going

  1229. to allow

  1230. Jesus to

  1231. expose it.

  1232. You say,

  1233. well, I

  1234. believe God's

  1235. end point in

  1236. salvation is

  1237. the creation

  1238. of the

  1239. church.

  1240. And the

  1241. church is

  1242. his saved

  1243. people in

  1244. a community

  1245. that reflects

  1246. heaven.

  1247. And that's

  1248. what Jesus

  1249. teaches.

  1250. But then we

  1251. go on and

  1252. say, well,

  1253. actually, I'm

  1254. not going to

  1255. engage seriously

  1256. or thoroughly

  1257. with any

  1258. church family,

  1259. let alone this

  1260. church family.

  1261. The theory's

  1262. okay, I like

  1263. the concept

  1264. of church,

  1265. but the

  1266. practice is

  1267. just too

  1268. hard to be

  1269. bold with.

  1270. It's too

  1271. hard to

  1272. engage with

  1273. other people

  1274. who let

  1275. me down

  1276. all the

  1277. time.

  1278. It's too

  1279. hard to

  1280. reorganize my

  1281. lifestyle to

  1282. prioritize

  1283. fellowship with

  1284. believers.

  1285. I don't need

  1286. them.

  1287. I can exist

  1288. very well by

  1289. myself.

  1290. In fact, I

  1291. prefer to be

  1292. on my own.

  1293. You see the

  1294. problem?

  1295. it's great to

  1296. realize that

  1297. Jesus has

  1298. always been

  1299. purposefully and

  1300. faithfully committed

  1301. to save you

  1302. and me.

  1303. In response,

  1304. we need to be

  1305. sure that the

  1306. Jesus we say we

  1307. believe in is

  1308. actually the

  1309. Jesus of

  1310. Scripture.

  1311. that we

  1312. believe in

  1313. Jesus on

  1314. his terms,

  1315. not ours,

  1316. and all his

  1317. terms, not

  1318. just some.

  1319. Friends, it's

  1320. just too easy

  1321. to deceive

  1322. ourselves into

  1323. a cheap

  1324. substitute that

  1325. looks like true

  1326. belief, but

  1327. is actually

  1328. unbelief.

  1329. too easy

  1330. to

  1331. just

  1332. know

  1333. about

  1334. the

  1335. mission

  1336. to

  1337. believe in

  1338. Jesus

  1339. God

  1340. we

  1341. knew

  1342. he

  1343. He

  1344. to

  1345. the
