  1. Now, being special is very important for each of us to have a meaningful life.

  2. And so we would like to have something special about us,

  3. in what we do, who we are,

  4. or being special in a church, special church, special school,

  5. special work, or being special in a country.

  6. What is Australia? How is it different to other countries?

  7. And that gives us meaning in life.

  8. And today, as we come to this part of the Bible,

  9. the Israelites, they had about 2,000 years of history by the time when Jesus came,

  10. and they were unique, and they were special,

  11. because they are the only nation in the world that was called by God,

  12. and started by God.

  13. And so they prided themselves for the fact that they had God's word, God's law,

  14. and also they had Abraham as their forefather.

  15. It did not mean that their life was trouble-free.

  16. During the time of Jesus, they were under Roman occupation.

  17. Also, in each of their lives, they were struggling as well.

  18. So just like us, they were wrestling with living a life that was not quite the way it was supposed to be.

  19. So life was marred by pain, regrets, and sin.

  20. However, at least they were special,

  21. because they had God's law and Abraham as their forefather.

  22. And so that's what they were holding on to for the meaning of their life.

  23. So when Jesus came among them and spoke to them,

  24. Jesus seemed to have thrown a spanner into their works.

  25. Suddenly, their traditional beliefs were challenged by these men from Galilee.

  26. Jesus was telling them that Abraham was special because of Jesus himself.

  27. And so the Jews would also only be special because of Jesus.

  28. And the Jews could not accept that.

  29. And how would they respond to Jesus' claims?

  30. If their traditional beliefs are not true,

  31. then how did they know what was true?

  32. So when our long-held beliefs are challenged by someone,

  33. how would we respond to that person?

  34. And how would we decide what is true?

  35. 17th century philosopher René Descartes.

  36. René Descartes is a French name.

  37. So Descartes spelled as D-E-S-C-A-R-T-E-S.

  38. I suppose they don't pronounce the S.

  39. And so René Descartes wanted to decide

  40. what was the absolute truth he could be certain of.

  41. So after thinking for some time,

  42. he was settled for the Latin phrase,

  43. cogito, ergo sum, I hope that pronounces that,

  44. which was subsequently translated into English as,

  45. I think, therefore I am.

  46. And what René Descartes tried to say,

  47. was trying to say was that while he might doubt about everything else,

  48. he could not doubt about his own existence.

  49. The fact that he was doubting,

  50. it means that he was thinking.

  51. And he need to be there or exist.

  52. He need to be existed to do the thinking.

  53. And so he ended up with this phrase.

  54. That is the bottom line, truth.

  55. I think, therefore I am.

  56. But he didn't know why he existed.

  57. I suppose he couldn't find out by just thinking.

  58. And he didn't know how he should live.

  59. And again, he couldn't do that just by thinking.

  60. We need to be told about that.

  61. But he was right in the sense that

  62. there are many truths we take for granted that may be wrong.

  63. Just for example, when we see the sun rising and setting,

  64. straight away we think that the sun revolves around the earth.

  65. And when we are told about,

  66. actually it's the earth that revolves around the sun,

  67. then we could then think that

  68. if we could be wrong about this,

  69. we can be wrong about many things in life as well.

  70. And that we thought is the truth.

  71. So like the Israelites,

  72. when we encounter Jesus in the Bible,

  73. from the Bible,

  74. we are also challenged to believe him or reject him.

  75. So from a scripture today,

  76. from John chapter 8, verses 48 to 59,

    John 8:48–59

  77. I would like us to think about

  78. at least two things when we are challenged.

  79. One is how we should not respond to challenges that we do not like.

  80. Secondly, the second one is how to think of what Jesus claimed

  81. to see if they are true.

  82. So we start with how we should not respond to challenges

  83. that we do not like.

  84. So our common response to challenges,

  85. to our belief,

  86. is by either mocking or joking.

  87. In chapter 8 of John, verse 22,

  88. there's a hint of joking

  89. when the Jews say,

  90. will he kill himself since he say,

  91. where I am going, you cannot come.

  92. So they could not understand what Jesus was saying,

  93. but they just said,

  94. is he going to kill himself?

  95. There's a hint of joking there.

  96. But in verse 48, we start that today,

  97. they were mocking Jesus.

  98. He said, are you not right in saying

  99. that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?

  100. They could not accept what Jesus said about himself

  101. and also about themselves.

  102. They therefore had to conclude

  103. that Jesus was either mad or bad or both.

  104. The Samaritans were despised by the Jews and the Gentiles

  105. because they were mixed breed from Jews and Gentiles.

  106. And that's why the Jews used Samaritan

  107. to belittle people.

  108. But I don't think Jesus cared to be called a Samaritan.

  109. We can look at Jesus' response in verse 49.

  110. He simply said, I do not have a demon.

  111. He didn't even want to go into the Samaritan thing.

  112. And he didn't care about being called a Samaritan.

  113. Now, if people like René Descartes

  114. heard what Jesus said,

  115. they would think over what he said

  116. and ask questions until they reach a conclusion.

  117. But most people do not think

  118. when there is any command upsetting their identity

  119. or any challenge to their belief.

  120. They simply retaliate by attacking the messenger.

  121. Nowadays, we do not say you are a Samaritan.

  122. We might say you are an Australian

  123. or you are a Tasmanian or something like this.

  124. We do not say you are a demon process.

  125. We might say you are a bigot or you are intolerant.

  126. So these are the terms that we use

  127. to downplay the claim of other people.

  128. So the Jews were waiting for God

  129. to make their life better.

  130. However, when God came,

  131. they could not accept him.

  132. We all have some preconceived ideas

  133. of who God is like

  134. or what God is like.

  135. When God appears,

  136. we might find him disagreeable.

  137. I hope we can think over

  138. our encounter with Jesus

  139. rather than dismissing the encounter with mockery.

  140. So how can we think about Jesus' claim?

  141. So in chapter 8,

  142. we can see that Jesus is appearing

  143. to the logics of his hearers

  144. all the time.

  145. He wanted them to think about what he said

  146. and to think about their responses

  147. to his sayings.

  148. The Jews responded by saying

  149. that Jesus had a demon.

  150. Jesus said he honored God,

  151. the Father,

  152. in the way he lived.

  153. And you can see that Jesus healed the sick,

  154. comforted the poor,

  155. taught them from the scriptures,

  156. cleansed the temple,

  157. promised people life.

  158. So could they find anything

  159. that Jesus did betray him

  160. as a demon process?

  161. if they think about it.

  162. Even when they saw Jesus

  163. performing miracles,

  164. they were giving praise to God.

  165. But now,

  166. they label Jesus

  167. as demon process.

  168. So how should we consider

  169. the claims of Jesus?

  170. We can consider at least

  171. three aspects of it.

  172. One is the motive.

  173. Why did Jesus claim?

  174. Why did Jesus say what he said?

  175. The offer.

  176. What did Jesus actually offer?

  177. And the identity of Jesus.

  178. Who does Jesus say himself to be?

  179. So the motive.

  180. So because we all want to be God ourselves,

  181. we dislike people who claim to be God.

  182. The Jews thought Jesus,

  183. being a man,

  184. was claiming to be God,

  185. to promote himself.

  186. It did not occur to them

  187. that Jesus was not a man

  188. wanting to become God.

  189. Jesus is God,

  190. who became man.

  191. So it's just like

  192. the sun and the earth.

  193. It depends on how we see

  194. the truth.

  195. So Jesus explained,

  196. I told you to come to me,

  197. to believe me,

  198. to follow me,

  199. not because I'm seeking glory

  200. to boast

  201. my ego.

  202. I honor my father,

  203. and my father honors me.

  204. I'm completely happy in my father.

  205. I do not need your validation.

  206. However,

  207. if you do not believe me,

  208. you will not have life.

  209. Jesus' motive to call people

  210. to believe in him

  211. was not because he wanted

  212. to be well known or popular.

  213. It was so that those who believe

  214. may have life.

  215. Was Jesus' motive

  216. godly or devilish?

  217. Did he have a demon inside

  218. to have such a motive?

  219. When we think about it,

  220. it is quite easy

  221. to differentiate the way,

  222. the devil,

  223. and the way of God.

  224. The devil told Eve

  225. to seek her own glory.

  226. He has been telling people

  227. to seek their own glory

  228. since the beginning.

  229. The devil does not tell people

  230. to seek him

  231. because he knows

  232. that it is unpopular

  233. to tell people

  234. to follow someone else.

  235. He also knows

  236. that so long as people

  237. follow the desire

  238. of their heart,

  239. they will become like him

  240. eventually.

  241. Why did people

  242. become offended

  243. by Jesus

  244. after they went deeper

  245. into his words?

  246. He told them

  247. they had the nature

  248. of the devil in them.

  249. He told them

  250. not to follow

  251. their own hearts.

  252. He told them

  253. not to seek glory

  254. for themselves.

  255. Jesus told them

  256. to follow himself.

  257. Jesus said he was

  258. the son of God,

  259. the son of man,

  260. the real man

  261. who lived

  262. for God's glory.

  263. He kept God's word.

  264. Jesus said,

  265. Jesus did not

  266. tell people

  267. to follow their hearts.

  268. If he had said that,

  269. then we can.

  270. We might label him

  271. or say that he

  272. had a demon himself.

  273. Jesus did not tell people

  274. to follow other

  275. great persons.

  276. If he had said that,

  277. the most we could say

  278. about Jesus

  279. was that he was

  280. a good teacher.

  281. But Jesus said,

  282. follow me

  283. so that you will

  284. never taste death.

  285. And that is the offer.

  286. Has anyone

  287. besides Jesus

  288. ever said,

  289. truly, truly,

  290. I say to you,

  291. anyone who keeps

  292. my word

  293. will never taste death?

  294. Our automatic response

  295. is to label Jesus

  296. either a lunatic

  297. or a liar.

  298. Everyone dies.

  299. People before Jesus

  300. came

  301. and people after

  302. Jesus came

  303. all die.

  304. Even Jesus himself

  305. died.

  306. But hold on,

  307. let us think deeper.

  308. Did Jesus live

  309. and speak

  310. in any way

  311. resemble a lunatic

  312. or a liar?

  313. Even as we

  314. look at Jesus,

  315. we can

  316. make some sort of,

  317. we have some sort of idea

  318. whether Jesus

  319. was genuine

  320. in what he said.

  321. So,

  322. was Jesus trying

  323. to take advantage

  324. of anyone's

  325. naivety?

  326. Would you even

  327. tell people

  328. that you would

  329. never die?

  330. I mean,

  331. it's so obviously

  332. a lie

  333. if you are not

  334. in a position

  335. to say that.

  336. So,

  337. it would be crazy

  338. for anyone

  339. to actually say that.

  340. What was Jesus offering

  341. and what is the price

  342. for his offer?

  343. So,

  344. Jesus was offering

  345. eternal life,

  346. a life that enjoys

  347. fellowship with God,

  348. a life that overflows

  349. to bless others,

  350. a life that appreciates

  351. the beauty

  352. and majesty

  353. of God's works.

  354. What price

  355. will we put

  356. on eternal life

  357. and what price

  358. could I even pay

  359. for such an offer?

  360. Jesus said,

  361. the offer is free

  362. because I have

  363. paid for it.

  364. I paid for it

  365. with my death.

  366. Jesus tasted death

  367. so that he could

  368. offer us life.

  369. Jesus did not

  370. remain dead.

  371. He was resurrected

  372. three days later

  373. and that's why

  374. we know his offer

  375. is genuine.

  376. You may ask,

  377. but did not people

  378. still die

  379. after they listened

  380. to Jesus' word?

  381. Our bodies

  382. do decay and die

  383. because

  384. they are inherited

  385. from the older

  386. order of things.

  387. God promised us

  388. a new body

  389. like that

  390. of the resurrected

  391. body of Jesus.

  392. So the first body

  393. is formed

  394. from dust

  395. and it will

  396. return to dust.

  397. The second body

  398. is formed

  399. by God's power

  400. and it will

  401. last forever.

  402. The old body

  403. needs to go

  404. before the new body

  405. can come.

  406. In any case,

  407. people who believe

  408. in Jesus

  409. may die

  410. in their bodies

  411. but they would

  412. not taste death

  413. because death

  414. would be

  415. the transformation

  416. from this broken

  417. world into

  418. the eternal

  419. joy of God.

  420. And do you know

  421. why those who

  422. are in Christ

  423. will never taste

  424. death?

  425. Because Christ

  426. is alive.

  427. Eternal life

  428. means knowing Christ.

  429. Eternal life

  430. means it is no longer

  431. I live

  432. but Christ

  433. lives in me.

  434. Eternal life

  435. means I no longer

  436. live for my glory

  437. but for a much

  438. bigger glory.

  439. And how do we know

  440. we have eternal life?

  441. What difference

  442. would that make in us?

  443. There are many

  444. differences.

  445. I can mention

  446. just two.

  447. One is that

  448. we will start

  449. to care

  450. about others

  451. and want them

  452. to have

  453. this same life.

  454. The other is that

  455. we will start

  456. to pray

  457. differently.

  458. When we live

  459. for ourselves,

  460. we are the subject

  461. of our concerns

  462. and prayer.

  463. God is there

  464. to help

  465. achieving our goals.

  466. Three weeks ago,

  467. a friend

  468. from Sydney

  469. requested me

  470. to pray

  471. because his wife

  472. was diagnosed

  473. with kidney cancer.

  474. His specific request

  475. was to pray

  476. that further

  477. investigations

  478. would reveal

  479. an early stage

  480. cancer.

  481. So when we are

  482. the subject

  483. of our prayer,

  484. we will tell God

  485. how best

  486. to help us,

  487. what God should do

  488. to make life

  489. easier for us.

  490. That's what we will ask.

  491. But how did I pray

  492. for my friend

  493. and his wife?

  494. I pray that they

  495. would be drawn

  496. closer to God

  497. in their distress,

  498. that they would

  499. come to appreciate

  500. each other more,

  501. that they would

  502. not be defeated

  503. by fear and doubt,

  504. that they would

  505. treasure the Lord's

  506. suffering more,

  507. that the peace of God

  508. will overthrow

  509. from them

  510. as they talk

  511. about their suffering

  512. with their friends

  513. or families.

  514. So a life

  515. that does not

  516. fear death,

  517. a life that

  518. seeks first

  519. God's glory,

  520. that is eternal life.

  521. Alright,

  522. we will come to

  523. the identity of Jesus.

  524. The Jews prided

  525. themselves for being

  526. the descendants

  527. of Abraham.

  528. Abraham was

  529. that great man

  530. who was called

  531. by God to forego

  532. his old way

  533. of living

  534. and follow God's way.

  535. God promised

  536. Abraham that

  537. all the families

  538. of the earth

  539. would be blessed

  540. in him.

  541. Abraham did not

  542. know how

  543. all the families

  544. of the earth

  545. would be blessed

  546. in him.

  547. Abraham did not

  548. even think

  549. he himself was blessed

  550. because he didn't

  551. have a child.

  552. It was after 25 years

  553. of God's call

  554. when he was 100 years

  555. old that God

  556. gave him a child.

  557. And that is how

  558. God was showing

  559. Abraham how this

  560. is going to be done.

  561. So God gave him

  562. a child,

  563. a son,

  564. and then requested

  565. Abraham to sacrifice

  566. the son

  567. as a burnt offering.

  568. At the last minute

  569. God stopped Abraham

  570. and provided a lamb

  571. as a burnt offering.

  572. Abraham saw

  573. that God's promise

  574. would be fulfilled

  575. through a son

  576. and that God

  577. was going to provide

  578. that son.

  579. Abraham rejoiced

  580. to know that

  581. all the families

  582. on earth

  583. would indeed

  584. be blessed

  585. in him,

  586. not personally

  587. in him,

  588. but to his

  589. descendants.

  590. He understood

  591. that a son

  592. would come

  593. from his descendants

  594. who would take

  595. away the sin

  596. of the world.

  597. Jesus was telling

  598. the Jews

  599. that Abraham

  600. was a sign

  601. pointing to himself.

  602. Abraham was waiting

  603. for the coming

  604. of Jesus

  605. to fulfill his role

  606. as the sacrificial lamb.

  607. In fact,

  608. Jesus implied

  609. that he met Abraham.

  610. If you go to

  611. Genesis 18.1,

  612. he says that

  613. the Lord appeared

  614. to Abraham

  615. by the ox of Manry

  616. as he sat

  617. at the door

  618. of his tents

  619. in the heat

  620. of the day.

  621. So that's in

  622. Genesis 18.1.

  623. But the Jews

  624. ridiculed him

  625. and said,

  626. you are not yet

  627. 50 years old.

  628. Do not bluff.

  629. Jesus said to them,

  630. truly, truly,

  631. I say to you,

  632. before Abraham

  633. was, I am.

  634. So as

  635. Simon

  636. and

  637. Marty

  638. pointed out,

  639. this is not

  640. a grammatic

  641. mistake.

  642. Jesus did not

  643. mean that

  644. before Abraham

  645. was, I was.

  646. Jesus used

  647. the phrase,

  648. I am,

  649. quite a number

  650. of times,

  651. especially in

  652. the book of John.

  653. For example,

  654. in John 6,

    John 6:20

  655. verse 20,

  656. but he said to them,

  657. I am,

  658. do not be afraid.

  659. In John 8,

  660. 24,

  661. I told you that

  662. you would die

  663. in your sins,

  664. for unless you

  665. believe that I am,

  666. you would die

  667. in your sins.

  668. And the Jews

  669. understood

  670. that Jesus

  671. was telling them

  672. he was not only

  673. a better man

  674. than Abraham,

  675. he was the

  676. God of Abraham.

  677. That was why

  678. they wanted

  679. to stone him

  680. immediately

  681. for such

  682. an unheard

  683. of blasphemy.

  684. At this point,

  685. I wonder

  686. to think about

  687. why Jesus

  688. did not simply

  689. tell the Jews

  690. that he was God.

  691. One of the

  692. strongest objections

  693. of Islam

  694. to the identity

  695. of Jesus

  696. is the fact

  697. that Jesus

  698. never said

  699. he was God.

  700. Plenty,

  701. one statement

  702. like that.

  703. And there

  704. is a challenge

  705. when the

  706. Muslims

  707. say,

  708. show me

  709. in the Bible

  710. where did

  711. Jesus

  712. say he

  713. was God.

  714. How do

  715. you show

  716. a Muslim?

  717. So we

  718. have to think

  719. about why

  720. Jesus

  721. never used

  722. that phrase,

  723. I am God.

  724. So we,

  725. did the Jews

  726. believe in God?

  727. They thought

  728. they did.

  729. However,

  730. Jesus said

  731. they believed

  732. in the devil.

  733. Jesus said

  734. they were liars

  735. when they said

  736. they believed

  737. in God

  738. because their

  739. pride,

  740. their jealousy,

  741. their murdering

  742. attitude towards

  743. Jesus betrayed

  744. their hearts.

  745. So if you

  746. tell a Muslim

  747. that Jesus

  748. is God,

  749. he would think

  750. that Jesus

  751. is like Allah.

  752. If you

  753. tell a Buddhist

  754. that Jesus

  755. is God,

  756. he would think

  757. that Jesus

  758. is like Buddha.

  759. Whatever the

  760. term God

  761. means to you

  762. and I,

  763. we are most

  764. likely wrong

  765. when we apply

  766. this term

  767. to Jesus.

  768. Jesus said

  769. I am the only

  770. one who knows

  771. how to describe

  772. God.

  773. That was

  774. what Jesus

  775. had been doing

  776. as he interacted

  777. with the Jews.

  778. He was describing

  779. who he was

  780. and who he is

  781. but not in the

  782. term of the

  783. understanding

  784. of the Jews

  785. as they

  786. taught what

  787. God was like.

  788. So Jesus

  789. used the terms

  790. like I am

  791. the bread of life,

  792. I am the

  793. light of the world,

  794. I am the

  795. door of the ship,

  796. I am the

  797. resurrection and

  798. the life,

  799. I am the way,

  800. the truth and

  801. the life,

  802. I am the

  803. true wine

  804. and the

  805. most powerful

  806. statement is

  807. what we come

  808. to today,

  809. simply,

  810. I am.

  811. And what does

  812. I am mean?

  813. It can mean

  814. a lot of

  815. things,

  816. I am,

  817. but it

  818. gives us

  819. a sense of

  820. awe as

  821. someone much,

  822. much greater,

  823. someone who

  824. has been there

  825. throughout

  826. history,

  827. someone who

  828. is in control

  829. of everything,

  830. someone who

  831. is the

  832. prime mover

  833. who

  834. causes

  835. everything

  836. else to

  837. happen,

  838. and someone

  839. for the

  840. whole thing

  841. to happen

  842. is about

  843. him and

  844. for him,

  845. and that

  846. is what

  847. I am

  848. can convey

  849. to us.

  850. So by

  851. the term

  852. I am,

  853. Jesus was

  854. telling the

  855. Jews to

  856. worship him,

  857. then they

  858. will be

  859. free.

  860. However,

  861. the Jews

  862. would not

  863. relinquish

  864. their self-

  865. worship,

  866. worship,

  867. they hid

  868. behind the

  869. thought that

  870. they were

  871. worshiping

  872. God when

  873. they offered

  874. sacrifices and

  875. kept the

  876. laws,

  877. but they

  878. did not

  879. love God.

  880. It is like

  881. we hide

  882. behind the

  883. thought of

  884. being green

  885. or being

  886. socially minded,

  887. but we do

  888. not even

  889. love our

  890. neighbors.

  891. Ideology and

  892. religion appear

  893. to try to

  894. bless people,

  895. but they end

  896. up killing

  897. people.

  898. It is like

  899. the Jews

  900. were doing

  901. as Jesus

  902. has been

  903. telling them

  904. three times

  905. before they

  906. want to

  907. stone Jesus

  908. that they

  909. wanted to

  910. kill him,

  911. and they

  912. did.

  913. It is only

  914. the seed of

  915. Abraham that

  916. all the

  917. families on

  918. earth will

  919. be blessed.

  920. Jesus is

  921. the great

  922. I am that

  923. makes all

  924. things right.

  925. And what

  926. does this

  927. I am mean

  928. to me?

  929. As I was

  930. thinking about

  931. this sermon

  932. about four

  933. weeks ago,

  934. on one

  935. Sunday,

  936. two things

  937. happened.

  938. after the

  939. service,

  940. after I

  941. went home,

  942. I was

  943. talking to

  944. my sister

  945. in Malaysia

  946. through the

  947. phone,

  948. and she

  949. was telling

  950. me about

  951. her cleaning

  952. her apartment,

  953. and said

  954. that there's

  955. still the

  956. ceiling fan

  957. to be

  958. cleaned.

  959. And then

  960. it straight

  961. away occurred

  962. to me,

  963. I need to

  964. ask how

  965. he's going

  966. to clean

  967. the ceiling

  968. fan,

  969. because he's

  970. 12 years

  971. older than

  972. I am.

  973. If he's

  974. going to

  975. climb up

  976. the ladder

  977. and clean

  978. it,

  979. it's so

  980. dangerous.

  981. And then

  982. we talked

  983. about other

  984. things,

  985. and I

  986. totally

  987. forgot about

  988. asking her.

  989. And then

  990. a few

  991. hours later,

  992. I received

  993. a call

  994. and said

  995. that she

  996. had a fall

  997. from the

  998. ladder and

  999. had hemorrhage

  1000. from the

  1001. brain.

  1002. I felt

  1003. so,

  1004. why did I

  1005. forget to

  1006. tell her not

  1007. to do

  1008. it?

  1009. Things like

  1010. this happen

  1011. in life.

  1012. But on

  1013. that same

  1014. Sunday in

  1015. the morning,

  1016. we were

  1017. voting for

  1018. David

  1019. Bolt's

  1020. appointment,

  1021. and I

  1022. was having

  1023. the role

  1024. of the

  1025. members.

  1026. I counted

  1027. that we

  1028. need to

  1029. have 50

  1030. votes to

  1031. pass the

  1032. motion.

  1033. And then

  1034. we welcomed

  1035. Sam Brown

  1036. as a

  1037. member.

  1038. that

  1039. changed the

  1040. whole thing.

  1041. I said,

  1042. oh yeah,

  1043. it's not

  1044. 50 now,

  1045. it's 51

  1046. votes for

  1047. the motion

  1048. to be

  1049. passed.

  1050. So we

  1051. counted the

  1052. vote,

  1053. we got

  1054. 50 votes,

  1055. and I

  1056. totally

  1057. forgot that

  1058. we need

  1059. to have

  1060. 51.

  1061. So 50

  1062. votes,

  1063. okay.

  1064. So though

  1065. I didn't

  1066. tell David

  1067. Collierwood

  1068. that it's

  1069. all right,

  1070. but in

  1071. terms of

  1072. how I

  1073. told him

  1074. it's 50,

  1075. he perceived

  1076. that it is

  1077. all right as

  1078. well.

  1079. And so we

  1080. said the

  1081. motion was

  1082. passed.

  1083. So on

  1084. the same

  1085. Sunday,

  1086. so two

  1087. things happened

  1088. that I

  1089. felt so

  1090. bad in

  1091. terms of

  1092. what's

  1093. going on

  1094. in there.

  1095. But reading

  1096. this passage

  1097. and going

  1098. through it,

  1099. I have to

  1100. think that

  1101. Jesus said,

  1102. I am.

  1103. So it's not

  1104. about me,

  1105. not about my

  1106. sister,

  1107. not about

  1108. David,

  1109. but not

  1110. about anything

  1111. else.

  1112. In the end,

  1113. he is.

  1114. whether

  1115. things will

  1116. turn up

  1117. as I

  1118. expect it

  1119. to be

  1120. or not,

  1121. in the

  1122. end,

  1123. it doesn't

  1124. really matter

  1125. so much.

  1126. There's

  1127. so many

  1128. things in

  1129. our life

  1130. that do

  1131. not turn

  1132. up as

  1133. we expect

  1134. them to

  1135. be,

  1136. but I'm

  1137. not,

  1138. he is.

  1139. So like

  1140. Eve's split

  1141. second decision

  1142. to eat the

  1143. forbidden

  1144. fruit,

  1145. each of

  1146. our lives

  1147. can be

  1148. changed in

  1149. any moment,

  1150. a moment

  1151. of foolishness,

  1152. a moment

  1153. of carelessness,

  1154. a moment

  1155. of dozing

  1156. off when

  1157. we're

  1158. driving,

  1159. a moment

  1160. of blocked

  1161. arteries,

  1162. giving us

  1163. heart attack,

  1164. can lead

  1165. to much

  1166. regrets

  1167. and sorrow

  1168. for myself

  1169. and for

  1170. someone else.

  1171. But Jesus

  1172. said,

  1173. before your

  1174. accident was,

  1175. I am.

  1176. Before your

  1177. mistakes were,

  1178. I am.

  1179. I knew

  1180. all about

  1181. them,

  1182. trust me.

  1183. It is for

  1184. your brokenness

  1185. that I

  1186. can.

  1187. And Psalm

  1188. 94,

  1189. 19 said,

  1190. when the

  1191. cares of

  1192. my

  1193. hearts

  1194. are

  1195. many,

  1196. your

  1197. consolation

  1198. shares

  1199. my

  1200. soul.

  1201. And when

  1202. Jesus said,

  1203. I am,

  1204. that is a

  1205. big consolation

  1206. to me.

  1207. René

  1208. Descartes

  1209. said that

  1210. because I

  1211. was thinking,

  1212. therefore I

  1213. existed.

  1214. I want to

  1215. take this

  1216. conclusion

  1217. further.

  1218. I want to

  1219. say that

  1220. because I

  1221. can think,

  1222. therefore God

  1223. exists.

  1224. I do not

  1225. create myself

  1226. or anything

  1227. else.

  1228. There is a

  1229. prime mover

  1230. that started

  1231. all things.

  1232. Jesus said,

  1233. I am.

  1234. life does

  1235. not make

  1236. sense until

  1237. we see that

  1238. everything is

  1239. from Jesus,

  1240. through Jesus,

  1241. and for

  1242. Jesus.

  1243. Life is

  1244. difficult to

  1245. cope until

  1246. we see that

  1247. we are not

  1248. the subject

  1249. of our

  1250. existence.

  1251. Jesus is.

  1252. Life is

  1253. hopeless until

  1254. we see that

  1255. things do

  1256. not happen

  1257. according to

  1258. our plans,

  1259. but according

  1260. to God's

  1261. plan for

  1262. Jesus.

  1263. Jesus.

  1264. The Jews

  1265. during Jesus'

  1266. time had a

  1267. glimpse of

  1268. greatness,

  1269. of eternity,

  1270. of majesty.

  1271. Most of

  1272. them chose

  1273. to hold

  1274. on to

  1275. their own

  1276. familiar

  1277. mundane

  1278. existence.

  1279. Every

  1280. Christmas,

  1281. we are

  1282. reminded the

  1283. great I

  1284. am has

  1285. come and

  1286. offered us

  1287. eternal

  1288. life.

  1289. May we

  1290. be willing

  1291. to surrender

  1292. our small

  1293. I am and

  1294. follow him

  1295. and trust

  1296. him.

  1297. Let us

  1298. pray.

  1299. pray.

  1300. Oh,

  1301. Father,

  1302. we stand

  1303. in the

  1304. presence of

  1305. the great

  1306. I am.

  1307. We can

  1308. be fearful

  1309. because we

  1310. do not

  1311. know you.

  1312. But we

  1313. thank you

  1314. that through

  1315. the Lord

  1316. Jesus Christ

  1317. who revealed

  1318. you to

  1319. us to

  1320. see grace

  1321. upon grace,

  1322. to see

  1323. one who

  1324. is full

  1325. of grace

  1326. and truth.

  1327. And we

  1328. thank you

  1329. that we

  1330. could

  1331. behold

  1332. your glory

  1333. in Christ

  1334. Jesus.

  1335. and we

  1336. want to

  1337. live on

  1338. such a

  1339. premise,

  1340. on such

  1341. a promise,

  1342. on such

  1343. a hope

  1344. that we

  1345. have.

  1346. Thank you,

  1347. Lord.

  1348. We pray in

  1349. Jesus' name.

  1350. Amen.
