  1. The reading is from Romans chapter 7, starting at verse 15, and going to Romans chapter 8, verse 4.

Romans 7 chapter mention Romans 8:4

  2. For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.

  3. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law that it is good.

  4. So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.

  5. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh.

  6. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.

  7. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.

  8. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.

  9. So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand.

  10. For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being.

  11. But I see in my members another law, waging a war against the law of my mind,

  12. and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.

  13. Wretched man that I am, who will deliver me from this body of death?

  14. Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

  15. So then I myself served the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I served the law of sin.

  16. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  17. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

  18. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do.

  19. By sending his own Son, in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin he condemns sin in the flesh,

  20. in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us,

  21. who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

  22. Well, good morning everyone.

  23. We're going to be on week two in our series called Safe and Secure in Christ.

  24. A series that's really going to focus on assurance.

  25. So I want to start this morning with just a statement to you as my Christian brothers and sisters.

  26. And it's this.

  27. God wants you, as a Christian, to have assurance of your salvation.

  28. Let me say it again.

  29. God, it's our Father's intention that Christians like you and me are totally certain that

  30. we have been forgiven for our sinner rebellion,

  31. that we now enjoy a relationship with God,

  32. that he will never change his mind about us or abandon us,

  33. in spite of our ongoing failure and disobedience,

  34. and that finally we will make it home to heaven or glory forever.

  35. Our Father wants us to understand that, to experience that.

  36. Now the question is, do you believe it?

  37. Do you even dare to believe this?

  38. A question may already be forming in your mind.

  39. If God wants me to be absolutely sure about being Christian,

  40. then why is it that I'm often, so often, anything but sure?

  41. No doubt some of you here this morning are struggling with a massive lack of assurance,

  42. massive doubts, loads of doubts.

  43. And no doubt you'd love to be able to believe it,

  44. but just somehow or other it eludes you.

  45. Your scam alert goes off in your mind saying,

  46. well, if something sounds too good to be true,

  47. then it probably is too good to be true.

  48. And given my experience of life as a Christian,

  49. it's too good to be true.

  50. Some of you may actually be living with a lack of assurance

  51. because you think it would be arrogant or presumptuous,

  52. like sinful pride for a Christian, any Christian,

  53. to say they're certain of being a Christian.

  54. I've known people like that over my ministry years.

  55. Some of you may be lacking assurance

  56. because your thinking is all wrong.

  57. And your actual thinking is robbing you

  58. of what God wants you to see and experience.

  59. So lack of assurance is a big thing for Christians

  60. for all different reasons.

  61. But the Lord says to each Christian here this morning

  62. that assurance of salvation is his gift to us

  63. to know and experience.

  64. Even better, as we move into Romans 8,

  65. even better, he actually gives us a series of reference points.

  66. If you know about navigation and triangulation,

  67. then you fix your bearings by triangulating

  68. different reference points.

  69. Well, that's what God gives us here in Romans 8

  70. in respect of assurance,

  71. a series of reference points

  72. which when properly triangulated or used together

  73. ensure we have our bearings right

  74. in terms of assurance of our salvation.

  75. And the first reference point this morning,

  76. in the first four verses of Romans 8,

  77. the first reference point is the unmerited

  78. and unchanging love of God in Christ

  79. and his objective work.

  80. His objective work on behalf of his guilty, sinful people.

  81. Let's have a look at Paul's statement in verses 1 through to 4.

  82. Verse 1, Don's already opened up.

  83. There is therefore now no condemnation

  84. for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  85. Now Dave and I didn't collude,

  86. but Dave's introduction picked up my next sentence.

  87. The idea of condemnation is horrible.

  88. In a courtroom,

  89. the convicted criminal may know of his guilt,

  90. but to hear the verdict or condemnation

  91. is an extra layer of awfulness

  92. even for the guilty criminal.

  93. Condemnation expresses the awfulness of the crime.

  94. Condemnation expresses the finality of the sentence.

  95. And when we think that in this courtroom,

  96. this is the courtroom of the holy God of the universe,

  97. the idea of condemnation is even worse,

  98. if that's possible to imagine it.

  99. God's courtroom, God is the holy judge.

  100. That it says there in verse 1,

  101. therefore now no condemnation implies a time

  102. when these same people were under condemnation.

  103. Now we need to go back through the argument of Romans

  104. to understand what's been said here.

  105. If you go back to chapter 1 verse 18,

  106. where Paul's argument starts,

  107. Paul argues from there right through chapter 2 and chapter 3,

  108. he's really saying,

  109. look,

  110. all people are condemned by God

  111. and stand under his wrath and guilt,

  112. under his condemnation.

  113. Why?

  114. Because no person

  115. at any point in this universe

  116. has ever lived consistently

  117. with what they know about God.

  118. Let's call it the law of God.

  119. Paul's saying,

  120. everybody is condemned

  121. because nobody

  122. lives according to the law of God.

  123. Now that law of God

  124. came to different people

  125. in different ways.

  126. For some,

  127. in chapter 1 of Romans,

  128. Paul says,

  129. all they had,

  130. the law of God,

  131. was what they could observe

  132. in nature

  133. and what was built

  134. into their conscience

  135. in a real sense

  136. of right and wrong.

  137. And Paul says in chapter 1,

  138. these things scream out

  139. the truth about God,

  140. that he exists,

  141. that he's powerful.

  142. That he's just,

  143. that he's good.

  144. That there's right

  145. and there's wrong

  146. and there will be accountability.

  147. That's what the law of God

  148. spelled out to these people

  149. just by looking at nature

  150. or by observing their conscience.

  151. But,

  152. says Paul,

  153. people reject that level of law

  154. and he says in chapter 1,

  155. they actually choose

  156. a domesticated God

  157. of their own making.

  158. They ignore their conscience

  159. in determination

  160. to do as they please.

  161. So they stand guilty

  162. before God.

  163. And then he goes on

  164. to talk about the Jews.

  165. Well,

  166. they have the law of God

  167. in a different form,

  168. clearly spelled out

  169. in the Mosaic law,

  170. the Ten Commandments.

  171. They were so proud

  172. of this privilege,

  173. says Paul.

  174. But they also stand guilty

  175. before God

  176. because they didn't

  177. actually obey the law.

  178. They twisted it

  179. to make it suit themselves.

  180. Paul's conclusion,

  181. Romans chapter 3.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  182. No one is righteous.

  183. All stand guilty

  184. and condemned

  185. before God.

  186. None live in the light

  187. of what they know about God.

  188. So,

  189. how is it possible then,

  190. chapter 8,

  191. verse 1,

  192. to speak about

  193. those who now

  194. escape God's condemnation?

  195. Well,

  196. we have it here,

  197. chapter 8,

  198. verses 1 and 2.

  199. It's the result

  200. of the gospel.

  201. There is,

  202. therefore now,

  203. no condemnation

  204. for those

  205. who are in Christ Jesus.

  206. In Christ Jesus

  207. is the key

  208. to escaping

  209. condemnation.

  210. for the law

  211. of the spirit

  212. of life,

  213. which is just

  214. another way

  215. of talking about

  216. the gospel,

  217. I think,

  218. in simple terms.

  219. You can go back

  220. and check that term out

  221. where it first appeared

  222. in chapter 7,

  223. verse 6.

  224. For the law

  225. of the spirit

  226. of life,

  227. or,

  228. in other words,

  229. the result

  230. of the gospel

  231. is that you've been

  232. set free

  233. in Christ Jesus

  234. from the law

  235. of sin and death.

  236. death.

  237. In other words,

  238. it's the result

  239. of the actions

  240. of Jesus

  241. for and on behalf

  242. of his people

  243. who are now

  244. in him,

  245. that is united

  246. with him.

  247. It is that

  248. which allows

  249. this new

  250. pronouncement

  251. of no condemnation.

  252. a bit more detail,

  253. the death

  254. of Christ

  255. actually changes

  256. the way

  257. God views us.

  258. He now views us

  259. in Christ.

  260. So,

  261. it's a really

  262. important thing here.

  263. We often think

  264. that the gospel

  265. is about

  266. how our view

  267. of God

  268. has changed.

  269. And there's a truth

  270. in that.

  271. Our view of God

  272. does change

  273. when we become

  274. Christians.

  275. But the heart

  276. of the gospel

  277. is far more

  278. important than that.

  279. The heart of the gospel

  280. is that God's view

  281. of us has changed.

  282. That's the really

  283. crucial part.

  284. And we're told

  285. through Romans

  286. that we have

  287. a totally new

  288. standing,

  289. a totally new

  290. status before God

  291. and it's called here

  292. in Christ Jesus.

  293. That's a reference

  294. to how our status

  295. now,

  296. how God views us.

  297. We are now

  298. united with Christ.

  299. Chapter 5

  300. of Romans.

  301. Our being

  302. and future

  303. is now

  304. tied to Christ.

  305. Chapter 6

  306. and 7

  307. of Romans.

  308. And because

  309. God could never

  310. push away

  311. his own son,

  312. there can never

  313. be a possibility

  314. that God

  315. will push us

  316. away because

  317. we are in Christ.

  318. And the death

  319. of Christ

  320. has actually

  321. freed us

  322. from the guilt

  323. and power

  324. of sin.

  325. Verse 2,

  326. for the law

  327. of the spirit

  328. of life

  329. has set you

  330. free.

  331. You're no

  332. longer obligated,

  333. you're no longer

  334. under obligation

  335. to or in debt

  336. to the law

  337. of sin

  338. and death.

  339. Jesus' death

  340. and resurrection

  341. has set us

  342. free.

  343. But the question

  344. is then,

  345. how does a

  346. person

  347. be set free

  348. from the law

  349. of sin

  350. and death

  351. or the guilt

  352. which demands

  353. condemnation?

  354. Well,

  355. verse 3

  356. tells us,

  357. for God

  358. has done

  359. what the law

  360. weakened by the

  361. flesh could not

  362. do.

  363. By sending

  364. his own son

  365. in the likeness

  366. of sinful flesh

  367. and for sin

  368. he condemned

  369. sin in the flesh.

  370. In other words,

  371. we're set free

  372. because the

  373. death of Christ

  374. has dealt

  375. with the very

  376. things that

  377. brought God's

  378. judgment upon us

  379. in the first place.

  380. That brought

  381. separation from God

  382. and condemnation

  383. from God

  384. in the first place.

  385. So,

  386. once they're dealt

  387. with,

  388. we can be restored

  389. into relationship

  390. with God

  391. by means of the

  392. death and resurrection

  393. of Jesus.

  394. Guilty,

  395. condemned rebels

  396. are legally

  397. released

  398. from condemnation.

  399. Now,

  400. again,

  401. I'll dig into it

  402. a little bit more.

  403. Verse 3,

  404. for God has done

  405. what the law

  406. weakened by the

  407. flesh could not

  408. do.

  409. That's the same

  410. sort of theme

  411. as was through

  412. chapter 7

  413. we saw two weeks

  414. ago.

  415. And it works

  416. a bit like this,

  417. you see,

  418. the law of God

  419. and that means

  420. all levels of

  421. God law

  422. going back to

  423. the Gentiles

  424. whether it's

  425. just the law

  426. of nature

  427. or for the

  428. Jews,

  429. the Mosaic law

  430. in all its

  431. detail.

  432. In either case,

  433. the law of God

  434. was meant

  435. to prompt

  436. obedience

  437. and therefore

  438. life or good

  439. relationship with

  440. God.

  441. God's law

  442. that

  443. because people

  444. are both

  445. unable

  446. and unwilling

  447. to obey

  448. God's law

  449. or to live

  450. in the light

  451. of what they

  452. know about

  453. God

  454. or to

  455. seek after

  456. God's

  457. standard,

  458. then the law

  459. effectively just

  460. is reduced

  461. as we saw

  462. two weeks

  463. ago.

  464. It's reduced

  465. to the role

  466. of exposing

  467. failure,

  468. exposing

  469. rebellion,

  470. exposing guilt

  471. and ultimately

  472. demanding

  473. condemnation.

  474. It can't

  475. actually help

  476. us.

  477. It just

  478. exposes us

  479. and condemns

  480. us.

  481. So the law

  482. that was meant

  483. to promote

  484. good life

  485. actually brings

  486. about condemnation.

  487. Well,

  488. through the

  489. sacrificial death

  490. of Jesus,

  491. God does

  492. for me

  493. what I could

  494. never do

  495. for myself,

  496. that is,

  497. deal with

  498. the legal

  499. requirements

  500. of God's

  501. justice.

  502. The law

  503. says you

  504. should be

  505. living like

  506. this.

  507. God demands

  508. that.

  509. Death of

  510. Christ,

  511. in the death

  512. of Christ,

  513. Jesus satisfies

  514. God's anger,

  515. God's wrath

  516. at our

  517. disobedience.

  518. He pays

  519. the penalty

  520. for my

  521. disobedience

  522. demanded by

  523. the justice

  524. of the law.

  525. And not

  526. only that,

  527. but he lives

  528. a life of

  529. perfect obedience

  530. into the

  531. future,

  532. which is

  533. essential for

  534. acceptance by

  535. the Holy

  536. God.

  537. The result,

  538. verse 3,

  539. sin is

  540. condemned.

  541. In other

  542. words,

  543. all the legal

  544. requirements to

  545. properly deal

  546. with my sin

  547. have been

  548. taken out

  549. on Jesus

  550. instead of

  551. me.

  552. Even more

  553. amazing,

  554. look at

  555. verse 4.

  556. in order

  557. that the

  558. righteous

  559. requirements

  560. of the

  561. law

  562. might be

  563. fulfilled

  564. in us

  565. who walk

  566. not according

  567. to the

  568. flesh,

  569. but according

  570. to the

  571. spirit.

  572. The great

  573. transfer is

  574. completed

  575. when Jesus

  576. actually takes

  577. upon himself

  578. my sin,

  579. my guilt,

  580. my requirement

  581. to fulfill

  582. the law,

  583. and instead

  584. gives me

  585. his righteousness,

  586. his perfect

  587. life of

  588. obedience,

  589. his perfect

  590. fulfilling

  591. of the

  592. law,

  593. is given

  594. to me.

  595. And that

  596. means

  597. I now

  598. both have

  599. the desire

  600. and the

  601. ability

  602. to obey

  603. God's

  604. law

  605. at every

  606. level

  607. and to

  608. bring glory

  609. to God

  610. as the

  611. law was

  612. originally

  613. intended to

  614. do.

  615. So that's

  616. what the

  617. gospel does

  618. for us.

  619. It's a

  620. great

  621. transfer.

  622. It moves

  623. us from

  624. one realm,

  625. the realm

  626. of condemnation

  627. and guilt,

  628. to the

  629. realm of

  630. acceptance

  631. and new

  632. ability and

  633. desire and

  634. attitude to

  635. do that which

  636. the Lord

  637. actually originally

  638. created us to

  639. do, and that

  640. is live in a

  641. way that

  642. brings him

  643. glory through

  644. obedience to

  645. his law.

  646. And all of

  647. this in

  648. these verses

  649. and Paul's

  650. argument right

  651. through the

  652. first eight

  653. chapters, all

  654. this is

  655. God's

  656. initiative.

  657. And so

  658. the wonderful

  659. thing that

  660. comes to

  661. his assurance

  662. is that

  663. God didn't

  664. cut corners.

  665. God didn't

  666. ignore my

  667. sin.

  668. He didn't

  669. play it

  670. down.

  671. He didn't

  672. say it was

  673. less than

  674. what it

  675. really is in

  676. terms of

  677. being offensive

  678. to him and

  679. being a

  680. judicial problem

  681. for him in

  682. relating to

  683. it.

  684. No, God

  685. dealt with

  686. it fully and

  687. honestly and

  688. justly and

  689. completely.

  690. But he

  691. did so in

  692. the death and

  693. resurrection of

  694. Jesus.

  695. So the

  696. fact that

  697. God has

  698. done it

  699. right first

  700. time round

  701. means that

  702. we can

  703. have

  704. assurance

  705. that he's

  706. not going to

  707. have to

  708. revisit it,

  709. that it's

  710. not going to

  711. have to be

  712. redone in

  713. the future,

  714. that somehow

  715. or other

  716. the judgment

  717. will be

  718. called into

  719. question again

  720. and there

  721. be a

  722. retrial.

  723. Since the

  724. demands of

  725. justice have

  726. been fully

  727. met, I

  728. can never

  729. be accused

  730. again.

  731. Verse 1,

  732. there is

  733. therefore no

  734. condemnation for

  735. those who are

  736. in Christ

  737. Jesus.

  738. I am totally

  739. secure,

  740. totally guaranteed

  741. as a Christian

  742. never to be

  743. condemned.

  744. Now friends,

  745. if you don't

  746. hear anything

  747. else this

  748. morning,

  749. then hear

  750. this next

  751. sentence.

  752. The first

  753. reference point

  754. in assurance,

  755. the first

  756. step in

  757. finding assurance

  758. of your

  759. salvation is

  760. looking away

  761. from yourself

  762. and your own

  763. performance and

  764. looking to what

  765. God has done

  766. for you in

  767. Christ.

  768. That's the

  769. only place you're

  770. going to find

  771. assurance.

  772. Why do I

  773. emphasize that?

  774. Because so

  775. often our

  776. own thinking

  777. is the

  778. greatest

  779. hindrance to

  780. our assurance.

  781. Repeatedly we

  782. fall into

  783. traps that

  784. actually rob us

  785. of assurance,

  786. that very thing

  787. that God wants

  788. us to have,

  789. wants us to

  790. experience,

  791. wants us to

  792. enjoy.

  793. Two, I want

  794. to mention this

  795. morning, we

  796. don't take God

  797. at his word.

  798. my friends,

  799. this is God's

  800. word to us in

  801. Romans chapter

  802. eight, verse

  803. one.

  804. There is

  805. therefore now

  806. no condemnation

  807. for those who

  808. are in Christ

  809. Jesus.

  810. God has

  811. spoken clearly.

  812. God has

  813. spoken clearly

  814. about our sin

  815. and about what

  816. he has done

  817. in Jesus to

  818. deal with our

  819. sin and guilt

  820. and about our

  821. being renewed

  822. by his Holy

  823. Spirit and

  824. about going

  825. home to

  826. heaven.

  827. God has

  828. spoken clearly

  829. spoken clearly

  830. about all

  831. these things.

  832. Surely, my

  833. friends, it's

  834. a simple

  835. thing to say

  836. that when the

  837. Lord speaks,

  838. then we should

  839. listen and be

  840. comforted by

  841. his promise.

  842. Of course, we

  843. hear politicians

  844. making grandiose

  845. promises all the

  846. time, but you

  847. see, that's the

  848. fact.

  849. They're just

  850. people like you

  851. and me and we

  852. often realize they

  853. can't deliver their

  854. promises.

  855. They might want

  856. to, but

  857. sometimes they

  858. just can't.

  859. But when God

  860. speaks, then we

  861. should listen and

  862. be comforted by

  863. his words, by

  864. his promise.

  865. You see, so

  866. often our own

  867. thinking about

  868. some particular

  869. sin in the

  870. past just robs

  871. us of that

  872. assurance.

  873. Because if you're

  874. like me, then you

  875. might think,

  876. well, okay, I

  877. can understand that

  878. I'm forgiven for

  879. these things and

  880. these things and

  881. these things, but

  882. when I go back in

  883. time in my life,

  884. there's one

  885. particular sin that

  886. nobody else even

  887. knows about.

  888. I just can't get

  889. past that sin.

  890. That one's just

  891. too big, too

  892. bad to be

  893. forgiven.

  894. And so I get

  895. robbed of

  896. assurance because

  897. I think, well,

  898. okay, I can

  899. understand God's

  900. grace and

  901. forgiveness, but

  902. there's going to

  903. have to be an

  904. accounting one

  905. day for that

  906. particular sin.

  907. perhaps I'm

  908. convinced that the

  909. Lord will hold

  910. that particular

  911. sin against me.

  912. Nobody else

  913. knows about it.

  914. But if the

  915. Lord's going to

  916. hold that

  917. particular sin of

  918. all the sins

  919. against me, then

  920. my assurance is

  921. gone.

  922. I'm done for.

  923. You see, that's

  924. contrary to what

  925. God says.

  926. it's contrary to

  927. what he says

  928. about sin, being

  929. removed as far

  930. from east as

  931. from west.

  932. It's contrary to

  933. what he says

  934. about Jesus

  935. having dealt,

  936. completely dealt

  937. with everything

  938. that breaks the

  939. relationship in the

  940. first place.

  941. It's contrary to

  942. what he says about

  943. my end point,

  944. being in Christ.

  945. It's contrary to

  946. what he says about

  947. the nature of sin,

  948. that the little

  949. white lie, as we

  950. call it, is just

  951. as offensive as

  952. the greatest

  953. mass murder in

  954. God's eyes.

  955. Sin is sin is

  956. sin.

  957. So we get

  958. ourselves trapped

  959. there and messed

  960. up.

  961. The second point

  962. we often fall

  963. into the trap is

  964. we focus on our

  965. own experience

  966. rather than what

  967. Christ has done

  968. for us.

  969. In a very

  970. immediate way,

  971. Romans 8,

  972. 1-4,

  973. Romans 8,

  974. the whole chapter,

  975. answers the

  976. desperate question

  977. of verse 24,

  978. the previous

  979. chapter.

  980. What an awful

  981. creature I am.

  982. I want to do

  983. good things,

  984. I want to do

  985. what pleases

  986. the Lord,

  987. but I find

  988. myself doing

  989. the very

  990. opposite,

  991. repeatedly.

  992. I'm locked

  993. into this

  994. struggle and

  995. it's just

  996. wearing me

  997. down.

  998. Who can

  999. deliver me?

  1000. Who will

  1001. rescue me from

  1002. the power of

  1003. sin that

  1004. operates in me,

  1005. driving this

  1006. endless,

  1007. painful struggle

  1008. within me?

  1009. The answer

  1010. is look to

  1011. Jesus.

  1012. becoming a

  1013. Christian

  1014. frees us

  1015. from all

  1016. guilt of

  1017. sin,

  1018. but doesn't

  1019. free us

  1020. from all

  1021. connection to

  1022. sin.

  1023. In fact,

  1024. chapter 7,

  1025. as we saw

  1026. two weeks

  1027. ago,

  1028. becoming a

  1029. Christian

  1030. actually starts

  1031. a massive

  1032. struggle

  1033. against sin

  1034. as we

  1035. determine to

  1036. act according

  1037. to our new

  1038. desires,

  1039. our new

  1040. attitudes,

  1041. trying to

  1042. say yes

  1043. to righteousness

  1044. and trying to

  1045. choose to

  1046. say no to

  1047. sin.

  1048. It's a

  1049. struggle.

  1050. It's a

  1051. painful,

  1052. ongoing

  1053. struggle.

  1054. And we

  1055. repeatedly

  1056. trip ourselves

  1057. up and

  1058. fall over.

  1059. But you

  1060. see,

  1061. the problem

  1062. with that

  1063. is the

  1064. harsh reality

  1065. of the

  1066. daily

  1067. experience

  1068. of struggle

  1069. robs many

  1070. Christians of

  1071. any sense

  1072. of assurance

  1073. because deep

  1074. down they

  1075. believe that a

  1076. true believer

  1077. should not

  1078. have to

  1079. struggle.

  1080. So they're

  1081. looking at

  1082. their experience

  1083. of life as

  1084. this daily

  1085. struggle and

  1086. repeated failure

  1087. and they

  1088. think,

  1089. well this

  1090. can't be

  1091. right if

  1092. I'm a

  1093. Christian and

  1094. because it

  1095. is right

  1096. therefore I

  1097. can't be a

  1098. Christian.

  1099. They want

  1100. to be like

  1101. Christ,

  1102. they want

  1103. to be

  1104. obedient to

  1105. God's

  1106. word,

  1107. so what

  1108. do they

  1109. do?

  1110. Well,

  1111. they try

  1112. even harder.

  1113. They try

  1114. even harder

  1115. to rid

  1116. themselves of

  1117. the struggle

  1118. and be in

  1119. a place where

  1120. they can say,

  1121. yep, I've

  1122. got it right

  1123. today.

  1124. And so my

  1125. experience of

  1126. life today

  1127. leads me to

  1128. feel confident

  1129. that I'm a

  1130. believer.

  1131. And the

  1132. result of

  1133. that, I've

  1134. seen it so

  1135. many times,

  1136. is a boom

  1137. or bust

  1138. performance

  1139. treadmill type

  1140. of assurance.

  1141. Focused on

  1142. feelings,

  1143. when you're

  1144. going really

  1145. reasonably well

  1146. in daily

  1147. Christian life

  1148. then, you

  1149. feel quite

  1150. confident and

  1151. assured that

  1152. you're a

  1153. believer and

  1154. that you're

  1155. safe.

  1156. But the

  1157. inevitable

  1158. spiritual fall

  1159. comes.

  1160. I say

  1161. inevitable.

  1162. The

  1163. spiritual fall

  1164. comes and

  1165. then they

  1166. crash and

  1167. burn.

  1168. Worried,

  1169. sick about

  1170. whether they're

  1171. saved or not

  1172. because, well,

  1173. if I'm doing

  1174. this and this

  1175. and this,

  1176. if I've

  1177. failed in

  1178. this way and

  1179. this way and

  1180. this way,

  1181. then I

  1182. couldn't

  1183. possibly be a

  1184. Christian.

  1185. And so that

  1186. cycle is up

  1187. and down,

  1188. up and down,

  1189. it's very

  1190. tiring.

  1191. Cycle of

  1192. extremes from

  1193. joyful confidence

  1194. to black

  1195. despair.

  1196. Other

  1197. Christians get

  1198. tripped up in

  1199. a slightly

  1200. different way.

  1201. They focus on

  1202. their immediate

  1203. circumstances in

  1204. life.

  1205. And so they

  1206. might say,

  1207. well, if I'm

  1208. really a

  1209. Christian and

  1210. God is

  1211. secure as a

  1212. Christian,

  1213. then when I

  1214. look at my

  1215. ongoing illness,

  1216. my financial or

  1217. business problems,

  1218. my marriage

  1219. difficulties,

  1220. my health

  1221. problems,

  1222. then surely

  1223. that's evidence

  1224. that God's

  1225. punishing me or

  1226. holding me

  1227. accountable in

  1228. some way still

  1229. for my sin.

  1230. And therefore,

  1231. gosh, if these

  1232. things are real in

  1233. my life, then I

  1234. can't really be

  1235. sure that I'm a

  1236. Christian.

  1237. do you see

  1238. the problem?

  1239. It's losing a

  1240. distinction between

  1241. the secure status

  1242. we have in

  1243. Christ, no

  1244. condemnation,

  1245. perfectly acceptable,

  1246. perfectly secure,

  1247. bound for glory.

  1248. It's losing the

  1249. distinction between

  1250. that and our

  1251. experience of life

  1252. as Christians,

  1253. which is a

  1254. struggle, a

  1255. struggle with

  1256. repeated failures.

  1257. Wanting to do the

  1258. right thing,

  1259. finding ourselves

  1260. doing the

  1261. opposite.

  1262. And if we

  1263. blur those two,

  1264. again, we're

  1265. cooked, we're

  1266. done for.

  1267. Justification is

  1268. being saved,

  1269. or sorry,

  1270. justification or

  1271. being saved is

  1272. what God has

  1273. done for us in

  1274. the past and

  1275. which completely

  1276. qualifies us for

  1277. heaven.

  1278. Gives us a new

  1279. status before God.

  1280. We're now adopted

  1281. children.

  1282. Justification means

  1283. that once saved,

  1284. we cannot ever be

  1285. more acceptable to

  1286. God than what we

  1287. now are.

  1288. But our

  1289. experience of this

  1290. new status or

  1291. relationship with

  1292. God is struggle.

  1293. Struggle to be who

  1294. we now are in

  1295. Christ, to live out

  1296. the mind of Christ

  1297. in daily life.

  1298. And that struggle

  1299. will show that

  1300. we're always

  1301. imperfect,

  1302. incomplete.

  1303. The struggle will

  1304. be different from

  1305. person to person

  1306. this side of

  1307. heaven, but it

  1308. will be real.

  1309. And it's

  1310. precisely because

  1311. of this changing

  1312. experience of

  1313. Christian living

  1314. that we must

  1315. base our

  1316. assurance on

  1317. our standing in

  1318. Christ.

  1319. I'd even go

  1320. further and say

  1321. that that struggle

  1322. is part of our

  1323. assurance.

  1324. I don't know

  1325. many non-Christians,

  1326. I don't know any

  1327. non-Christians,

  1328. who worry

  1329. themselves,

  1330. whose desires are

  1331. to obey God's

  1332. law.

  1333. They just do what

  1334. they want.

  1335. The struggle in

  1336. itself is evidence

  1337. of a changed

  1338. life, working the

  1339. Holy Spirit within

  1340. us.

  1341. And we'll see more

  1342. of that next week

  1343. as Rob takes us

  1344. through the next

  1345. few verses.

  1346. Christians.

  1347. We've got to be

  1348. looking at what

  1349. Christ has done

  1350. for us.

  1351. And again, this

  1352. struggle with sin

  1353. and a wrong focus

  1354. on our experience

  1355. often causes

  1356. Christians who

  1357. start off with a

  1358. notion of grace

  1359. and salvation,

  1360. often causes us

  1361. just to default

  1362. back to a form

  1363. of legalism

  1364. again.

  1365. That is, we

  1366. default back to

  1367. our old pre-Christian

  1368. way of living,

  1369. convinced that we

  1370. are more acceptable

  1371. when we do

  1372. religious things

  1373. to please them.

  1374. But that is

  1375. driven in a sense

  1376. of us having

  1377. control and us

  1378. through control

  1379. feeling better

  1380. about ourselves

  1381. before God.

  1382. And it feels

  1383. like a good

  1384. solution for the

  1385. struggle because

  1386. as I say, it

  1387. takes back control

  1388. of our salvation.

  1389. We don't have to

  1390. trust God's promise

  1391. of no condemnation

  1392. because I'm

  1393. actually doing

  1394. things that God

  1395. must take notice

  1396. of and think

  1397. more highly of me

  1398. for because.

  1399. It means I don't

  1400. have to entrust

  1401. myself to Jesus

  1402. and to something

1403. he offers me as a

  1404. free gift.

  1405. And so we have

  1406. this false sense

  1407. of security.

1408. And it is a false

  1409. sense of assurance

  1410. and security based

  1411. in what we're

  1412. doing and the

  1413. results of that

  1414. in terms of

  1415. relationship with

  1416. God.

  1417. and it puts

  1418. us back on the

  1419. performance

  1420. treadmill, only

  1421. in a slightly

  1422. different trajectory.

  1423. My friends,

  1424. the performance

  1425. treadmill is so

  1426. tiring.

  1427. So tiring in the

  1428. short term and

  1429. ultimately destructive

  1430. in the long term.

  1431. I'll tell you

  1432. why.

  1433. The performance

  1434. thing of mixing

  1435. these two things

  1436. up and basing

  1437. our assurance on

  1438. our own efforts

  1439. means that

  1440. eventually we

  1441. will collapse

  1442. in failure

  1443. because it

  1444. will dawn on us

  1445. one day that

  1446. for all our

  1447. efforts we're

  1448. unable to keep

  1449. God's law

  1450. consistently.

  1451. And we'll

  1452. crash and burn.

  1453. Or we'll live

  1454. in constant

  1455. fear.

  1456. Fear that we

  1457. haven't done

  1458. quite enough.

  1459. We're doing

  1460. reasonably well

  1461. but in the

  1462. end have I

  1463. done enough

  1464. to get over

  1465. the line,

  1466. to get into

  1467. heaven, to

  1468. be acceptable

  1469. to God?

  1470. And that

  1471. fear will

  1472. crush us.

  1473. Or another

  1474. alternative that

  1475. people use in

  1476. this, who

  1477. fall into this

  1478. trap, is they

  1479. simply change the

  1480. standard of

  1481. acceptance.

  1482. They simply

  1483. dumb down

  1484. God's word

  1485. and they

  1486. reduce it to

  1487. a level where

  1488. they can

  1489. achieve it for

  1490. themselves.

  1491. And so they

  1492. tend to say

  1493. well okay,

  1494. God's standard

  1495. means I need

  1496. to keep

  1497. myself from

  1498. the big

  1499. sins in

  1500. life.

  1501. I need to

  1502. make sure I'm

  1503. not guilty of

  1504. adultery, I'm

  1505. not guilty of

  1506. murder, not

  1507. guilty of

  1508. massive theft.

  1509. And we list

  1510. all these things

  1511. and we tick

  1512. ourselves off and

  1513. think well yeah,

  1514. I've avoided

  1515. those so I'm

  1516. secure, I'm

  1517. doing alright.

  1518. Not realizing

  1519. all we've done

  1520. is just shift

  1521. and dumb down

  1522. God's standard

  1523. while we live

  1524. comfortably with

  1525. impure thinking,

  1526. undiscovered

  1527. lies, acceptable

  1528. sins, not

  1529. seeing those as

  1530. offensive to

  1531. God.

  1532. Friends, if

  1533. we're to know

  1534. assurance, if

  1535. we're to know

  1536. the assurance that

  1537. God wants us to

  1538. know as a

  1539. saved people, we

  1540. must not focus on

  1541. how we live,

  1542. but on how

  1543. Christ died for

  1544. us.

  1545. We must focus

  1546. not on our

  1547. struggle for

  1548. obedience, right

  1549. and proper as

  1550. that is, but

  1551. focus on our

  1552. standing in

  1553. Christ.

  1554. Let me pray.

  1555. Lord, this is a

  1556. massive issue for

  1557. us, we struggle

  1558. with repeatedly.

  1559. We pray, Lord,

  1560. that in this

  1561. series that you

  1562. might speak to

  1563. us tenderly and

  1564. speak to us

  1565. clearly and

  1566. change our

  1567. hearts, change

  1568. our thinking

  1569. where it's

  1570. wrong, Lord,

  1571. so we might

  1572. know and

  1573. experience the

  1574. assurance of

  1575. salvation.

  1576. You want us to

  1577. know and

  1578. experience in

  1579. Christ Jesus.

  1580. Help us, Lord,

  1581. to look away from

  1582. ourselves and to

  1583. look to the work

  1584. of Jesus when it

  1585. comes to that

  1586. first reference

  1587. point.

  1588. Lord, and

  1589. thereby, Lord,

  1590. knowing our

  1591. security in

  1592. Jesus, have the

  1593. energy and the

  1594. desire and the

  1595. freedom to bounce

  1596. back from there

  1597. to struggling

  1598. again, to do

  1599. that which we

  1600. now want to do,

  1601. honour you and

  1602. obey you at every

  1603. point in life.

  1604. I pray this in

  1605. Jesus' name.

  1606. Amen.

  1607. Amen.

  1608. Amen.

  1609. Amen.

  1610. Amen.

  1611. Amen.

  1612. Amen.

  1613. Amen.

  1614. Amen.

  1615. Amen.

  1616. Amen.

  1617. Amen.

  1618. Amen.

  1619. Amen.

  1620. Amen.

  1621. Amen.

  1622. Amen.

  1623. Amen.

  1624. Amen.

  1625. Amen.

  1626. Amen.

  1627. Amen.

  1628. Amen.

  1629. Amen.
