  1. Reading in Psalm 51, this is a psalm of David

  2. when Nathan the prophet went to him after he'd gone into Bathsheba

  3. and this is his response.

  4. Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love.

  5. According to your abundant mercy, blot out my transgressions.

  6. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity

  7. and cleanse me from my sin.

  8. For I know my transgressions

  9. and my sin is ever before me.

  10. Against you, you only, have I sinned

  11. and done what is evil in your sight

  12. so that you may be justified in your words

  13. and blameless in your judgment.

  14. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity

  15. and in sin did my mother's conceive me.

  16. Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being

  17. and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.

  18. Purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean.

  19. Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.

  20. Let me hear joy and gladness.

  21. Let the bones that you have broken rejoice.

  22. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquities.

  23. Create in me a clean heart, O God,

  24. and renew a right spirit within me.

  25. Cast me not away from your presence

  26. and take not your Holy Spirit from me.

  27. Restore to me the joy of your salvation

  28. and uphold me with a willing spirit.

  29. Then I will teach transgressors your ways

  30. and sinners will return to you.

  31. Deliver me from blood guiltiness, O God,

  32. O God of my salvation,

  33. and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness.

  34. O Lord, open my lips

  35. and my mouth will declare your praise

  36. for you will not delight in sacrifice

  37. or I would give it

  38. and you will not be pleased with a burnt offering.

  39. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit,

  40. a broken and contrite heart, O God,

  41. you will not despise.

  42. Do good to Zion in your good pleasure.

  43. Build up the walls of Jerusalem.

  44. Then you will delight in right sacrifices,

  45. in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings.

  46. Then bulls will be offered on your altar.

  47. Thanks, Catherine.

  48. So this is the time now for kids of creche age

  49. up to year two.

  50. This is the awesome display.

  51. Crouch age to year two.

  52. We'll go out to our Sunday school program

  53. and we're going to stand and sing our next song,

  54. Judge of the Secrets,

  55. and then David will come and bring the message to us.

  56. Thank you.

  57. Good morning, everyone.

  58. If you're a visitor here this morning,

  59. my name's David.

  60. I'm one of the pastors.

  61. It would be hard to imagine a more attention-grabbing,

  62. a more confronting heading than we get in Psalm 51.

  63. Just look at the heading.

  64. In the English Bible, it says,

  65. when Nathan the prophet went to King David

  66. after he had gone into Bathsheba.

  67. Literally, in the Hebrew, it says,

  68. after David had entered into Bathsheba.

  69. This is a poem about guilt and redemption.

  70. So, immediately, it's a song our society is likely to reject

  71. because, on the whole,

  72. our society now rejects the concept of guilt.

  73. Guilt is construed these days to be an evil in itself.

  74. Oftentimes, it's said to be the construct of religions,

  75. something that's used to control people.

  76. Historically, it's not been like that.

  77. Historically, guilt has been accepted

  78. as the proper working of conscience,

  79. which confronts us internally

  80. with our wrongdoings.

  81. But modern wisdom

  82. is moving to demand

  83. that people should be guilt-free

  84. in any absolute moral sense.

  85. And the cry of society now is so commonly,

  86. don't judge me.

  87. And behind that statement

  88. is another statement that says,

  89. well, look, my mental health,

  90. my happiness,

  91. do not allow for any challenge

  92. to my attitudes

  93. or my actions,

  94. especially when they make me uncomfortable.

  95. Don't judge me.

  96. But for all this,

  97. guilt in our society is alive and well.

  98. It's the feeling that keeps on giving.

  99. I think every one of us here know

  100. something of guilt.

  101. And it really is the feeling

  102. that keeps on giving day and night.

  103. in fact, some are so burned

  104. with a deep sense of guilt

  105. eating away at them

  106. that they actually develop

  107. serious mental or physiological illnesses.

  108. It's a powerful, powerful thing

  109. that won't be written out of life

  110. simply because our society don't like it.

  111. Now, unfortunately,

  112. many Christians are moving also

  113. to reject the ideal of guilt

  114. because increasingly Christians

  115. seem to be of the opinion

  116. that God's ideal for them

  117. is to be happy.

  118. So, again,

  119. any challenge to thinking

  120. or behavior

  121. which makes a Christian uncomfortable

  122. is very unwelcome

  123. and generally met with a response,

  124. again,

  125. don't judge me.

  126. Or, in churches,

  127. it's more,

  128. don't guilt me.

  129. Essentially,

  130. what that means

  131. and what that does is

  132. when you respond to that,

  133. essentially,

  134. you're blaming

  135. the person who issues the challenge

  136. for how you're feeling.

  137. It's their tone of voice,

  138. their words,

  139. their motivation

  140. in challenging you.

  141. That's the problem.

  142. Don't think for a moment

  143. that I need to look inside

  144. and see if there's any substantial basis

  145. to the challenge.

  146. But, again,

  147. at the other extreme,

  148. some Christians are so bowed down,

  149. and so burdened,

  150. so trapped in their sense of guilt

  151. that, quite literally,

  152. it drives their every waking moment

  153. and, indeed,

  154. their sleeping moments

  155. or their nighttime moments.

  156. And it robs them,

  157. totally robs them

  158. of any sense

  159. of enjoyment

  160. of their relationship with Christ.

  161. Psalm 51

  162. speaks into all of those things

  163. and gives us a real-life model

  164. of God's pathway

  165. for dealing with guilt,

  166. God's pathway

  167. for turning back to him

  168. in guilt,

  169. and encourages us

  170. to see

  171. that the person

  172. God esteems

  173. is the person

  174. who's described,

  175. chapter,

  176. verse 17,

  177. the person who's described

  178. as one with a broken

  179. and contrite heart

  180. or spirit.

  181. First step way,

  182. first step in the pathway

  183. is to say,

  184. if you're a visitor,

  185. the outline is on the back

  186. of this sheet you handed

  187. this morning

  188. will help you track through

  189. with me a little bit,

  190. at least in terms of

  191. the major headings.

  192. So,

  193. set up my year,

  194. my year.

  195. first step in

  196. the pathway

  197. of turning back

  198. to God

  199. is to say,

  200. my rebellion,

  201. autonomy,

  202. and failure

  203. is damning.

  204. But I own

  205. all of it

  206. in detail.

  207. Verse 6 verses.

  208. We've already heard

  209. the background

  210. to the story.

  211. it's the awful fall

  212. and fall

  213. and fall

  214. of King David.

  215. And verses 1 and 2 then

  216. is an expression

  217. of helplessness

  218. before God's justice.

  219. Have mercy on me, O God.

  220. Have mercy on me, O God.

  221. According to your steadfast love,

  222. according to your

  223. abundant mercy,

  224. blot out my transgressions.

  225. Wash me thoroughly

  226. from my iniquity

  227. and cleanse me

  228. from my sin.

  229. David actually knows

  230. that in God's law

  231. there is no specific

  232. sacrifice to atone

  233. for adultery

  234. and murder.

  235. There's sacrifices

  236. for heaps and heaps

  237. of other situations,

  238. but there's no specific

  239. sacrifice

  240. offered to atone

  241. for adultery

  242. and murder.

  243. His only hope

  244. is to throw himself

  245. on God's mercy.

  246. But it's important

  247. as we move into this psalm,

  248. this is a really important

  249. thing to hang on to,

  250. I think.

  251. Even as he knows

  252. his guilt

  253. and owns it,

  254. even as he throws himself

  255. in God's mercy,

  256. David,

  257. in his first two verses,

  258. still knows

  259. he belongs

  260. to God.

  261. God's mercy.

  262. Why?

  263. Because of God's

  264. covenant love.

  265. So his guilt is real,

  266. but his position of guilt

  267. is not despair.

  268. Verses 3 through 6,

  269. we get a sense

  270. of just how powerful

  271. this is in David's life.

  272. He's lived with it

  273. for almost a year

  274. before he's confronted

  275. by Nathan,

  276. the prophet.

  277. He's lived with,

  278. verse 3,

  279. day and night.

  280. He's not been able

  281. to hide from himself,

  282. even though he's been able

  283. to cover his tracks

  284. publicly.

  285. And now,

  286. he takes ownership.

  287. He takes ownership

  288. in detail.

  289. Now,

  290. if you look at the,

  291. you don't look at it now,

  292. but on the front cover,

  293. I've put in

  294. a little bit of stuff there.

  295. Very sorry

  296. for the small size

  297. of the print,

  298. but get a magnifying glass

  299. and read it at home.

  300. But it picks up

  301. a very important thing.

  302. Our English Bible

  303. used three words

  304. to describe

  305. his crime.

  306. Transgression,

  307. iniquity,

  308. and sins.

  309. Now,

  310. for most of us,

  311. they're just some sort

  312. of vague religious words.

  313. But in the original Hebrew,

  314. they're very nuanced

  315. and very confronting words.

  316. Transgressions

  317. is much more

  318. than doing something wrong.

  319. It describes rebellion

  320. against God's authority,

  321. defiance of God's authority.

  322. Iniquity,

  323. then,

  324. is the opposite

  325. of what flows.

  326. It's the self-assertion,

  327. the autonomy

  328. of making himself

  329. his own authority,

  330. making himself

  331. his own wisdom

  332. instead of God.

  333. And sins

  334. is the most frequently

  335. used word

  336. and describes

  337. the abject failure,

  338. which has to be

  339. the inevitable consequence

  340. of setting

  341. our own course

  342. in life.

  343. And it's in those,

  344. that sense,

  345. David owns

  346. his sin.

  347. And that

  348. moves David

  349. from a focus

  350. on himself

  351. to focus

  352. on God.

  353. And that's how

  354. we see the movement

  355. from 2 Samuel 11,

  356. the proud,

  357. self-absorbed,

  358. ruthless,

  359. scheming,

  360. pleasure-seeker.

  361. to the broken man

  362. who's absolutely

  363. gutted

  364. now that he understands

  365. how he has treated

  366. God in all of this.

  367. He understands

  368. he has failed

  369. many,

  370. many people

  371. in lots of

  372. different ways,

  373. but ultimately

  374. he comes to see

  375. that it's

  376. God he has failed.

  377. And so

  378. his confession

  379. is both

  380. detailed

  381. and nuanced

  382. but ultimately

  383. it's not

  384. a therapeutic

  385. exercise

  386. to get things

  387. off his chest.

  388. the next verse.

  389. It's recognition

  390. that his exposure

  391. by Nathan the prophet

  392. and God's

  393. verdict of

  394. guilty,

  395. guilty,

  396. guilty

  397. is entirely

  398. appropriate.

  399. So his confession

  400. is actually

  401. bringing him

  402. to see

  403. the enormity

  404. of his crimes

  405. before God

  406. in a very

  407. detailed

  408. break it down

  409. into its

  410. component parts

  411. type understanding.

  412. No vague

  413. God,

  414. I'm sorry

  415. for my sin.

  416. Now,

  417. send me blessings.

  418. Isn't that how

  419. we often pray?

  420. Verse 5 and 6,

  421. David makes

  422. no attempt

  423. to explain

  424. away his actions.

  425. There's no

  426. plea bargaining

  427. going on here.

  428. David understands

  429. that he can't

  430. say to God,

  431. well actually God,

  432. you realize

  433. this is a

  434. once-off

  435. stupidity

  436. on my part

  437. and I want

  438. you to see

  439. it in that

  440. term.

  441. No.

  442. David knows

  443. it's not

  444. a once-off

  445. stupidity.

  446. He knows

  447. it's not

  448. a product

  449. of his

  450. family,

  451. social,

  452. cultural

  453. or environmental

  454. backgrounds.

  455. He knows

  456. that what

  457. he's done

  458. is a

  459. fundamental

  460. part of

  461. him

  462. rising up.

  463. And it

  464. explains,

  465. David knows,

  466. why in spite

  467. of being

  468. described by

  469. God as a

  470. man after

  471. God's own

  472. heart,

  473. he so

  474. easily and

  475. so radically

  476. turned his

  477. back on

  478. that and

  479. set his own

  480. course in

  481. life and

  482. brought himself

  483. to disaster.

  484. God's own

  485. heart.

  486. And he

  487. accepts,

  488. verse 6,

  489. that all

  490. of this,

  491. and he's

  492. now got a

  493. great long

  494. list of

  495. very specific

  496. and detailed

  497. sins in his

  498. mind, he

  499. accepts that

  500. all of this

  501. list is so

  502. offensive to

  503. God who

  504. longs for

  505. truth and

  506. integrity from

  507. the inside

  508. out.

  509. Not just an

  510. external veneer,

  511. God who

  512. actually pushes

  513. his people to

  514. confront the

  515. inconvenient truth

  516. of their sin.

  517. So owning

  518. David's sin for

  519. David has

  520. taken all of

  521. that.

  522. Now friends,

  523. just let me

  524. pause there and

  525. just sweep us

  526. up into some

  527. application.

  528. application.

  529. This broken

  530. spirit that

  531. David speaks

  532. of in verse

  533. 17 is a

  534. gift from

  535. God.

  536. Can I beg

  537. you not to

  538. fear it?

  539. Because I

  540. think that's

  541. what we do.

  542. Brokenness is

  543. God's pathway to

  544. renewal and

  545. redemption and

  546. restoration.

  547. Restoration of a

  548. sense of joy,

  549. of fellowship.

  550. Why would we

  551. fear that?

  552. Yes,

  553. brokenness is

  554. inconvenient.

  555. Brokenness is

  556. darn uncomfortable.

  557. Brokenness is a

  558. terrible thing to

  559. experience.

  560. The process of

  561. being broken.

  562. But look what it

  563. leads to.

  564. See, we all

  565. long to succeed,

  566. don't we?

  567. That's a

  568. basic part of

  569. being human.

  570. We want to

  571. do well.

  572. And not only do

  573. we want to do

  574. well, but we

  575. then want to

  576. find personal

  577. recognition and

  578. validation in

  579. doing well, in

  580. being a

  581. trustworthy,

  582. dependable

  583. person.

  584. Therefore, I

  585. think deep

  586. down, we

  587. fear failure

  588. most of

  589. all.

  590. And perhaps

  591. for many

  592. of us, we

  593. fear failing

  594. our own

  595. standards.

  596. And how

  597. many times

  598. a day do

  599. we do

  600. that?

  601. We set

  602. standards for

  603. ourselves, we

  604. want to validate

  605. ourselves by

  606. those standards,

  607. and then we

  608. find we

  609. failed our

  610. own standards.

  611. Or we

  612. betray those

  613. closest to

  614. us, those

  615. that we most

  616. want recognition

  617. of being

  618. dependable

  619. before.

  620. So we

  621. fear owning

  622. our sin in

  623. all its

  624. gory detail.

  625. We really

  626. find it hard,

  627. I think, to

  628. take this

  629. first step in

  630. repentance and

  631. restoration,

  632. because we do

  633. not like what

  634. self-examination

  635. reveals about

  636. ourselves.

  637. It's a

  638. tautology.

  639. And even

  640. when we do

  641. try and step

  642. into this

  643. self-examination,

  644. we then try

  645. and minimize

  646. confrontation

  647. with the

  648. quagmire, which

  649. is our

  650. hearts.

  651. And we

  652. try and do

  653. that, I

  654. think, through

  655. a non-specific,

  656. shallow,

  657. pain-free,

  658. I'm sorry for

  659. my sin, as

  660. I've already

  661. said.

  662. And we

  663. quickly get

  664. through that

  665. as a

  666. transition to

  667. seeking forgiveness

  668. and God's

  669. blessing.

  670. restoration of

  671. the good

  672. things that

  673. we want

  674. from God.

  675. My friends,

  676. we will never

  677. turn to God

  678. properly

  679. and resolutely

  680. until we

  681. confront

  682. truly

  683. and

  684. comprehensively

  685. and in

  686. detail

  687. our

  688. rebellion,

  689. autonomy,

  690. and

  691. failures.

  692. In and

  693. through the

  694. good things

  695. that God

  696. has given

  697. us,

  698. things which

  699. like David

  700. became

  701. idols,

  702. and things

  703. to us that

  704. become idols

  705. to us,

  706. or things

  707. that, in

  708. other words,

  709. become more

  710. important to us

  711. than God

  712. himself.

  713. the things

  714. we choose

  715. to fill

  716. our lives

  717. with instead

  718. of filling

  719. our lives

  720. with God.

  721. Until we

  722. confront those

  723. things,

  724. we will

  725. never turn

  726. properly to

  727. God.

  728. So my

  729. friends, I'd

  730. say to you

  731. this morning,

  732. as I've said

  733. to myself

  734. over many

  735. years now,

  736. and again

  737. lots this

  738. week,

  739. stop trying

  740. to hide

  741. from

  742. yourself.

  743. Stop

  744. trying to

  745. hide from

  746. God.

  747. Be glad

  748. that God

  749. pursues you

  750. and forces

  751. you to

  752. confrontation

  753. with his

  754. word and

  755. his offense

  756. as the

  757. first stage

  758. in being

  759. free from

  760. guilt and

  761. moving towards

  762. restoration,

  763. moving towards

  764. a renewal of

  765. a sense of

  766. enjoyment of

  767. God's

  768. forgiveness and

  769. love.

  770. So the

  771. second point

  772. then is,

  773. your forgiveness

  774. and total

  775. renewal from

  776. the inside

  777. out is what

  778. I beg for.

  779. Picking up

  780. verses 7

  781. through to

  782. 12.

  783. Owning his

  784. sin is a

  785. start.

  786. But David

  787. knows that

  788. without God's

  789. direct

  790. intervention,

  791. all the

  792. time he

  793. owns his

  794. sin,

  795. his guilt

  796. will still

  797. stay.

  798. And that's

  799. because guilt

  800. is not just

  801. a psychological

  802. issue,

  803. like many

  804. today would

  805. want to

  806. reduce it

  807. to.

  808. So a

  809. psychological

  810. issue then

  811. is fixed

  812. by David

  813. giving himself

  814. permission to

  815. be free from

  816. guilt.

  817. That's what

  818. we hear today.

  819. Or giving

  820. himself permission

  821. to love

  822. himself again.

  823. Guilt's not

  824. just a social

  825. issue either.

  826. It's not a

  827. simple matter

  828. as we try

  829. and say in

  830. our society.

  831. Well let's

  832. just lock a

  833. person up for

  834. 30 years and

  835. give him the

  836. death penalty.

  837. That's not

  838. going to deal

  839. with his

  840. guilt.

  841. Might be a

  842. deterrent for

  843. society.

  844. David's guilt

  845. isn't even a

  846. religious issue.

  847. Fixed by

  848. offering endless

  849. sacrifices and

  850. prayers.

  851. David picks

  852. that up in

  853. verse 16 and

  854. 17.

  855. keeping

  856. religious

  857. festivals.

  858. David knows

  859. that there's

  860. no point of

  861. him even

  862. trying that

  863. pathway because

  864. that's not

  865. going to

  866. address the

  867. guilt.

  868. Being more

  869. religious doesn't

  870. do it my

  871. friends.

  872. So that's

  873. our pathway

  874. isn't it?

  875. We offset

  876. sin here by

  877. trying to be

  878. more religious

  879. here.

  880. It won't

  881. work.

  882. It doesn't

  883. work.

  884. It can't

  885. work.

  886. So David

  887. needs God's

  888. forgiveness and

  889. pleads for

  890. God's

  891. forgiveness.

  892. Described

  893. verse 7 as

  894. God's heavy

  895. duty cleaning

  896. operation to

  897. remove dirt on

  898. the inside,

  899. make them

  900. clean again.

  901. Look at

  902. verse 7.

  903. Purge me

  904. with hyssop.

  905. Hyssop was

  906. always offered

  907. with a sin

  908. offering because

  909. not only you

  910. have to deal

  911. with the legal

  912. guilt, you

  913. have to be

  914. cleansed from

  915. defilement.

  916. Purge me with

  917. hyssop and I

  918. shall be clean.

  919. wash me and I

  920. shall be whiter

  921. than snow.

  922. Put me through

  923. the special

  924. operation that

  925. only you can

  926. do, Lord,

  927. that heavy

  928. duty cleaning

  929. cycle that

  930. will tumble

  931. me around,

  932. but in the

  933. tumbling around

  934. bring the dirt

  935. out from the

  936. inside.

  937. In verses

  938. 8 and 9,

  939. David's longing

  940. for that

  941. response we

  942. long for.

  943. Most of

  944. any time I've

  945. had to confess

  946. anything to

  947. Allison, I

  948. confess nervously,

  949. but my hope is

  950. that I'm going to

  951. hear a response

  952. that says,

  953. thank you for

  954. that.

  955. It's all right.

  956. The relationship's

  957. intact.

  958. You're forgiven.

  959. That's the thing I

  960. crave for as much

  961. as I need to

  962. confess.

  963. And that's what

  964. David's craving

  965. for in verses

  966. 8 and 9.

  967. David wants

  968. to hear God

  969. saying, it's

  970. all right.

  971. Everything's

  972. forgiven.

  973. You're

  974. restored.

  975. The relationship

  976. can move forward

  977. as if this had

  978. never, ever

  979. happened.

  980. But not

  981. satisfied with

  982. even that,

  983. David wants to

  984. push even

  985. further.

  986. Verses 10,

  987. 11, and

  988. 12.

  989. David isn't

  990. happy just to

  991. have a

  992. reassurance that

  993. everything's

  994. all right.

  995. He actually

  996. wants to be

  997. completely

  998. renewed.

  999. Total renewal

  1000. from the inside

  1001. out through God's

  1002. spirit.

  1003. Attitudes,

  1004. desires, and

  1005. thinking.

  1006. He's not just

  1007. after a quadruple

  1008. bypass for this

  1009. damaged heart of

  1010. his.

  1011. He wants a

  1012. complete heart

  1013. transplant.

  1014. And he

  1015. asks for it

  1016. with some

  1017. degree of

  1018. hesitation.

  1019. Verse 11 and

  1020. 12, very hard

  1021. verses to

  1022. understand, but

  1023. here's my

  1024. take on them.

  1025. I don't think

  1026. they need to be

  1027. as complicated

  1028. as some

  1029. commentators make

  1030. them.

  1031. But that might

  1032. just tell you

  1033. about me,

  1034. not the

  1035. commentators.

  1036. I think he

  1037. asks for that

  1038. big heart

  1039. transplant with

  1040. some trepidation

  1041. because he

  1042. knows jolly

  1043. well that God

  1044. would have every

  1045. right to say,

  1046. no way,

  1047. Jose, go to

  1048. hell.

  1049. Your crimes

  1050. against me are

  1051. so awful that

  1052. my last words

  1053. to you are going

  1054. to be, go to

  1055. hell, because

  1056. that's what you

  1057. deserve.

  1058. But he

  1059. hangs on to

  1060. the reality

  1061. of existing

  1062. relationship.

  1063. He hangs on to

  1064. the reality of

  1065. God's covenant

  1066. promise of

  1067. eternal relationship

  1068. with David.

  1069. You have to go

  1070. back to 2

    2 Samuel 7:12

  1071. Samuel chapter 7

  1072. verses 12

  1073. through to 15

  1074. to see the

  1075. details of that.

  1076. But God's

  1077. already committed

  1078. himself going

  1079. forward to

  1080. David.

  1081. So he hangs

  1082. on to that

  1083. and he longs

  1084. for this renewal

  1085. even though in

  1086. his mind he's

  1087. battling.

  1088. Back?

  1089. Yeah, oh

  1090. good.

  1091. So again,

  1092. pause for some

  1093. application.

  1094. A broken

  1095. spirit

  1096. becomes a

  1097. willing spirit

  1098. through God's

  1099. spirit.

  1100. We can count

  1101. on it.

  1102. We can count

  1103. on it.

  1104. This is

  1105. immensely

  1106. practical for us

  1107. as Christians.

  1108. When we mess

  1109. up and we

  1110. do.

  1111. Our messing

  1112. up does not

  1113. break our

  1114. relationship with

  1115. God in

  1116. Christ.

  1117. But it will

  1118. rob us of any

  1119. sense of

  1120. enjoyment of

  1121. that relationship.

  1122. It will

  1123. rob us of a

  1124. confidence in

  1125. our salvation.

  1126. But our hope

  1127. is this.

  1128. God's spirit

  1129. that we

  1130. now have

  1131. within us

  1132. in Christ

  1133. is committed

  1134. to renewing

  1135. us from the

  1136. inside out

  1137. so that we

  1138. wholeheartedly

  1139. come to the

  1140. point and

  1141. grow into the

  1142. point and

  1143. overflow into

  1144. the point of

  1145. wanting to

  1146. display the

  1147. mind of

  1148. Christ in

  1149. all things.

  1150. don't fear a

  1151. broken spirit

  1152. because of

  1153. what it will

  1154. lead to.

  1155. Third point.

  1156. My longing,

  1157. says David,

  1158. is to be the

  1159. man after God's

  1160. own heart

  1161. who actually

  1162. brings you

  1163. glory.

  1164. Picking up the

  1165. last verses

  1166. 13 onwards.

  1167. with the

  1168. renewing of

  1169. God's spirit

  1170. in his life,

  1171. the renewing

  1172. work of God's

  1173. spirit in his

  1174. life, King

  1175. David anticipates

  1176. becoming a

  1177. true model

  1178. of what it

  1179. is to be a

  1180. man after God's

  1181. own heart as

  1182. he overflows in

  1183. praise and

  1184. thanks.

  1185. Look at

  1186. verse 13.

  1187. Then, so

  1188. when I have

  1189. this renewing

  1190. work of the

  1191. spirit,

  1192. in my

  1193. life, then

  1194. I will teach

  1195. transgressors your

  1196. way and sinners

  1197. will return to

  1198. you.

  1199. The

  1200. transgressor

  1201. becomes the

  1202. teacher.

  1203. David goes on

  1204. to say it

  1205. will be a

  1206. life of

  1207. sacrifice.

  1208. It will be a

  1209. life of

  1210. sacrifice, but

  1211. not the

  1212. external,

  1213. religious,

  1214. outside-in

  1215. approach of

  1216. ritual sacrifices,

  1217. religious sacrifices,

  1218. sacrifices that

  1219. are offered on

  1220. the assumption

  1221. that God is

  1222. pleased with my

  1223. sacrifice and

  1224. that we are more

  1225. acceptable to him

  1226. because of those

  1227. sacrifices.

  1228. David's not

  1229. interested in that

  1230. at all.

  1231. It won't work for

  1232. me, says David.

  1233. There is a

  1234. sacrifice.

  1235. It's a sacrifice

  1236. of praise and

  1237. thanks from a

  1238. renewed heart,

  1239. renewed desires,

  1240. renewed attitudes,

  1241. overflowing into

  1242. a new life

  1243. where genuinely

  1244. and truly he

  1245. will be a

  1246. man after God's

  1247. own heart

  1248. because he now

  1249. has God's

  1250. spirit at

  1251. heart.

  1252. David has

  1253. regained the

  1254. joy of his

  1255. salvation.

  1256. salvation.

  1257. Remembering now

  1258. that the Lord

  1259. looks for the

  1260. heart that

  1261. knows how

  1262. little it

  1263. deserves on

  1264. the one hand

  1265. and how much

  1266. it owes on

  1267. the other

  1268. hand.

  1269. And this is

  1270. the broken

  1271. David.

  1272. He is

  1273. absolutely

  1274. confident,

  1275. verse 17,

  1276. absolutely

  1277. confident that

  1278. God will

  1279. never

  1280. despise,

  1281. make it

  1282. positive,

  1283. will always

  1284. esteem the

  1285. truly broken,

  1286. humbled person

  1287. who returns

  1288. to him for

  1289. forgiveness and

  1290. a total rebuild

  1291. through his

  1292. spirit.

  1293. But still

  1294. David's not

  1295. finished,

  1296. verse 18 and

  1297. 19.

  1298. Let me read

  1299. these verses

  1300. and preempt it

  1301. by saying that

  1302. commentators generally

  1303. think these two

  1304. verses are added

  1305. on at some

  1306. later point in

  1307. time.

  1308. They reckon

  1309. they don't

  1310. fit easily

  1311. with the theme

  1312. of the sound.

  1313. But I beg to

  1314. disagree.

  1315. I think they

  1316. fit perfectly.

  1317. And here's

  1318. again my take

  1319. on it.

  1320. But let me

  1321. read them to

  1322. you first.

  1323. David says,

  1324. Do good to

  1325. Zion in your

  1326. good pleasure.

  1327. Build up the

  1328. walls of

  1329. Jerusalem.

  1330. Then you will

  1331. delight in

  1332. right sacrifice

  1333. and burnt

  1334. offerings and

  1335. whole burnt

  1336. offerings.

  1337. Then bulls

  1338. will be offered

  1339. on your altar.

  1340. again the

  1341. thought is that

  1342. these verses

  1343. speak of

  1344. national Israel

  1345. and perhaps

  1346. were added

  1347. sometime later

  1348. in the exile

  1349. period perhaps.

  1350. But I think

  1351. they fit perfectly

  1352. here and I

  1353. think the

  1354. thought is

  1355. this.

  1356. That as

  1357. David himself

  1358. turns back to

  1359. the Lord in

  1360. repentance and

  1361. is now focused

  1362. on the Lord,

  1363. suddenly his

  1364. horizons are

  1365. extended way

  1366. beyond himself.

  1367. To the point

  1368. that his longing

  1369. then becomes

  1370. that God

  1371. would do for

  1372. the nation

  1373. and indeed

  1374. for the whole

  1375. world exactly

  1376. what he's just

  1377. done in David's

  1378. life.

  1379. Why?

  1380. Because the

  1381. nation is

  1382. equally guilty

  1383. of adultery

  1384. before God

  1385. as David was

  1386. precisely a

  1387. guilty of

  1388. physical adultery.

  1389. And that's

  1390. where I might

  1391. disagree with

  1392. one small

  1393. point of

  1394. Don's

  1395. sermon.

  1396. David was

  1397. speaking about

  1398. me.

  1399. King David

  1400. was speaking

  1401. about me.

  1402. And you.

  1403. Right through

  1404. the Old

  1405. Testament God's

  1406. repeated

  1407. criticism of

  1408. his people is

  1409. you've

  1410. prostituted

  1411. yourselves,

  1412. you've

  1413. committed

  1414. adultery,

  1415. you've gone

  1416. looking for

  1417. the pleasure

  1418. of life that

  1419. you find and

  1420. should find

  1421. in me,

  1422. you've gone

  1423. looking for

  1424. them in other

  1425. places.

  1426. things.

  1427. And I

  1428. think David's

  1429. just saying

  1430. here,

  1431. Lord,

  1432. that very

  1433. thing I've

  1434. experienced,

  1435. please do for

  1436. the whole

  1437. nation,

  1438. for the whole

  1439. world,

  1440. in line with

  1441. your long

  1442. time salvation

  1443. promise.

  1444. And when the

  1445. heart of the

  1446. nation is

  1447. renewed,

  1448. then their

  1449. sacrifices will

  1450. be delightful

  1451. to you,

  1452. Lord.

  1453. And they

  1454. will properly

  1455. reflect appreciation

  1456. for God's

  1457. mercy and

  1458. salvation.

  1459. sacrifices

  1460. were never

  1461. meant

  1462. essentially

  1463. to take

  1464. away sin

  1465. in themselves.

  1466. They were

  1467. meant to be

  1468. a picture

  1469. of God's

  1470. provision

  1471. for forgiveness.

  1472. God would

  1473. deal with

  1474. our hearts.

  1475. And not

  1476. until the

  1477. nations

  1478. renewed

  1479. through your

  1480. salvation

  1481. purposes,

  1482. says David,

  1483. will we

  1484. actually see

  1485. that reality.

  1486. And then as

  1487. a nation,

  1488. we will be

  1489. a people

  1490. after God's

  1491. own heart.

  1492. friends,

  1493. again,

  1494. application

  1495. here,

  1496. this broken

  1497. spirit will

  1498. never be

  1499. despised by

  1500. God.

  1501. We have to

  1502. beg for it.

  1503. Beg for it

  1504. for ourselves,

  1505. individually.

  1506. Beg for it

  1507. for our

  1508. church.

  1509. Have we

  1510. been guilty

  1511. of spiritual

  1512. adultery,

  1513. collectively and

  1514. individually?

  1515. I think so.

  1516. starting with

  1517. me.

  1518. Beg for it

  1519. for our

  1520. nation.

  1521. Don't fear

  1522. what God

  1523. uses for

  1524. our good.

  1525. Our proud

  1526. sinful hearts

  1527. need to be

  1528. broken so

  1529. that we will

  1530. turn to

  1531. God.

  1532. But the

  1533. same God

  1534. who breaks

  1535. us also

  1536. delights then

  1537. to rebuild

  1538. us in

  1539. his image

  1540. in Christ.

  1541. Now,

  1542. even if

  1543. you're a

  1544. believer here

  1545. this morning

  1546. and you're

  1547. suffering

  1548. enormous guilt

  1549. because you've

  1550. chosen to

  1551. walk back

  1552. into sin,

  1553. thinking what

  1554. it offered

  1555. would be

  1556. more satisfying

  1557. than God.

  1558. In a sense,

  1559. I think that

  1560. will sweep

  1561. every one of

  1562. us up here

  1563. this morning

  1564. individually,

  1565. won't it?

  1566. Some to

  1567. more of a

  1568. degree than

  1569. others.

  1570. Some with

  1571. particular

  1572. specific sins

  1573. that others

  1574. don't have to

  1575. feel guilt

  1576. over.

  1577. But in

  1578. any situation,

  1579. if you're a

  1580. believer in

  1581. that situation,

  1582. turn back

  1583. to God.

  1584. Own your

  1585. sin.

  1586. Don't fear

  1587. being broken

  1588. for our

  1589. sin.

  1590. Don't fear

  1591. being broken

  1592. by the Lord.

  1593. Rather,

  1594. see it as an

  1595. opportunity to

  1596. grow.

  1597. an opportunity

  1598. to believe

  1599. the gospel

  1600. more and

  1601. more.

  1602. That the

  1603. Lord delights

  1604. to rebuild

  1605. broken,

  1606. humbled people

  1607. from the

  1608. inside out

  1609. as his

  1610. pathway

  1611. to being

  1612. like Jesus

  1613. and glory.

  1614. The pathway

  1615. to glory

  1616. for Jesus

  1617. will be the

  1618. pathway to

  1619. glory for

  1620. you and

  1621. me.

  1622. And again,

  1623. I say to

  1624. you this

  1625. morning,

  1626. if you're

  1627. not yet

  1628. a Christian,

  1629. if you've

  1630. not yet

  1631. addressed your

  1632. guilt before

  1633. God,

  1634. if you're

  1635. still in

  1636. the business

  1637. of trying

  1638. to ignore

  1639. your guilt,

  1640. pretend it's

  1641. not there,

  1642. or deal

  1643. with it in

  1644. some other

  1645. way,

  1646. then go

  1647. to Jesus.

  1648. Because

  1649. Jesus

  1650. ultimately

  1651. is where

  1652. King David

  1653. is pointing

  1654. you to

  1655. experience

  1656. God's

  1657. salvation,

  1658. forgiveness,

  1659. and renewal.

  1660. See,

  1661. let me put

  1662. it together

  1663. like this.

  1664. King David

  1665. needed some

  1666. serious,

  1667. heavy-duty

  1668. intervention.

  1669. He needed

  1670. the king

  1671. of all kings

  1672. to arrest

  1673. him and

  1674. expose him.

  1675. He needed

  1676. Nathan the

  1677. prophet to

  1678. speak God's

  1679. word into

  1680. King David's

  1681. heart,

  1682. illuminating

  1683. his stupidity

  1684. and his

  1685. ignorance.

  1686. rebellion.

  1687. He desperately

  1688. needed a

  1689. sacrifice

  1690. offered on

  1691. his behalf

  1692. to deal

  1693. with his

  1694. sin,

  1695. but he

  1696. knew there

  1697. was no

  1698. sacrifice to

  1699. offer for

  1700. his particular

  1701. sin.

  1702. And all

  1703. of this

  1704. points us

  1705. to Jesus.

  1706. What King

  1707. David

  1708. experienced

  1709. externally,

  1710. we experience

  1711. internally.

  1712. in the

  1713. New Testament,

  1714. Jesus

  1715. describes

  1716. himself as

  1717. God's

  1718. King.

  1719. Come to

  1720. subdue

  1721. our

  1722. unruly

  1723. hearts.

  1724. Jesus is

  1725. God's

  1726. word who

  1727. speaks into

  1728. our lives

  1729. and illuminates

  1730. our ignorance

  1731. and points us

  1732. to truth.

  1733. truth.

  1734. The Holy

  1735. Spirit within

  1736. us convicts

  1737. us of

  1738. sin and

  1739. truth and

  1740. righteousness.

  1741. John 16.

  1742. And Jesus

  1743. is the

  1744. priest

  1745. who is

  1746. able and

  1747. has offered

  1748. the sacrifice

  1749. perfectly

  1750. suitable and

  1751. capable for

  1752. dealing with

  1753. the awfulness

  1754. of our sin

  1755. before God.

  1756. Jesus is

  1757. the complete

  1758. salvation

  1759. package

  1760. offered to

  1761. you by the

  1762. Lord with

  1763. the promise

  1764. that the

  1765. person

  1766. humbled

  1767. enough

  1768. to put

  1769. out their

  1770. hand and

  1771. take what

  1772. they do

  1773. not deserve

  1774. will never

  1775. ever be

  1776. despised

  1777. by God.

  1778. My friend,

  1779. do not

  1780. ignore your

  1781. guilt a

  1782. moment longer.

  1783. Do not

  1784. pretend you

  1785. don't have a

  1786. deep-seated

  1787. sense of

  1788. guilt before

  1789. God.

  1790. Come to

  1791. Jesus because

  1792. I can tell you

  1793. now,

  1794. he knows

  1795. your guilt

  1796. better than

  1797. even you

  1798. know it.

  1799. and will

  1800. ever know

  1801. it.

  1802. And he

  1803. has removed

  1804. it totally

  1805. from you.

  1806. Something you

  1807. will never

  1808. ever be able

  1809. to do for

  1810. yourself.

  1811. Let me

  1812. pray.

  1813. Lord,

  1814. these are

  1815. heavy words

  1816. in one

  1817. sense and

  1818. yet music

  1819. to our

  1820. ears in

  1821. another

  1822. sense.

  1823. for Lord,

  1824. you never

  1825. desire to

  1826. expose your

  1827. people in

  1828. all our

  1829. awfulness

  1830. without an

  1831. equal commitment

  1832. to rebuilding

  1833. us in all

  1834. your glory.

  1835. Help us

  1836. not to fear

  1837. one for the

  1838. joy of

  1839. experiencing the

  1840. other.

  1841. Amen.

  1842. Amen.
