  1. We are going through Romans 8 with the overall theme of assurance of salvation in Christ.

  2. So two weeks ago, David Coylewood spoke on reason number one for the assurance of our salvation.

  3. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ

  4. because Christ has taken the condemnation on the cross.

  5. And last week, Rob Patterson spoke on reason number two, the Holy Spirit has come to give life.

  6. The law of the spirit of life supersedes the law of sin and death.

  7. It is like the law of aerodynamics supersedes the law of gravity.

  8. When the law of the spirit of life is at work in us,

  9. the law of sin and death no longer has anything to do with us.

  10. This week, I would like to speak on reason number three,

  11. that is how the Holy Spirit helps us to live like children of God.

  12. And Rob has been very helpful in explaining the term of Abba Father.

  13. And then Marty gave us a very good illustration in terms of being adopted by God.

  14. All right, before we start, shall we pray?

  15. Father God, we thank you for the fact that we could call your Father,

  16. even as we come before you, the Holy God.

  17. And it is such a privilege for us to come before you as our Father,

  18. no longer fearing any condemnation.

  19. Oh, Father, we know that you want us to have more, more than no condemnation,

  20. but a life that is worthy of your calling,

  21. a life that is totally out of our own expectation.

  22. For you have prepared for those who love you,

  23. things that we have never thought of, never seen, never heard before.

  24. Oh, Father, help us to see you clearer this morning as we come into your word.

  25. Thank you, Father. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

  26. For this sermon, there will be quite a number of verses that I will be going through.

  27. I'm sorry, it will be a bit rushed, I thought.

  28. But I'll put those verses on the screen.

  29. Hopefully Marty can follow.

  30. So we start with Romans 8.12.

  31. So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.

  32. We are debtors.

  33. We can understand that many of the adults in Australia are debtors to the banks,

  34. but are we all debtors?

  35. We are debtors in the sense that we will,

  36. we all have needs that we cannot supply ourselves.

  37. Needs like happiness and recognition.

  38. Our flesh tells us that it can give us happiness and recognition

  39. if we live according to its ways.

  40. We try the way of the flesh,

  41. and it just seems to get what we want,

  42. and so we became debtors to the flesh.

  43. So to illustrate this point,

  44. I will go to the Old Testament.

  45. The books of Exodus and Numbers

  46. tells us about the Israelites

  47. spending 40 years wandering in the wilderness

  48. before they were ready to enter God's promised land.

  49. So one of the problems they faced was the supply of food,

  50. and so they became hungry.

  51. To satisfy their hunger quickly and easily,

  52. the way of the flesh was to grumble.

  53. They grumbled against Moses and against God

  54. for bringing them out of Egypt

  55. and now starving them to death in the desert, in the wilderness.

  56. Despite their grumbling,

  57. God sent them food from heaven.

  58. So they seemed to get what they wanted by grumbling.

  59. They did not realize that,

  60. or they did not know that God would have given them food

  61. if they asked for it humbly.

  62. So after some time,

  63. so they haven't learned their lesson,

  64. they haven't changed.

  65. After some time, they grumbled again

  66. because the food they ate was the same every day.

  67. They wanted more variety.

  68. And so the character just remained the same

  69. throughout those 40 years.

  70. So God was preparing them to live in the promised land

  71. where there would be plenty of food for them to enjoy,

  72. but they would spoil the enjoyment of such food

  73. if such enjoyment had become more important

  74. than the enjoyment of God.

  75. So God was taking time to prepare the Israelites for the promised land.

  76. However, the Israelites lived according to the flesh.

  77. They were impatient.

  78. They could not see the bigger glory that is to come.

  79. They just wanted to enjoy the small things there and then.

  80. The flesh is short-sighted

  81. because it knows that it does not have forever to live.

  82. It wants to enjoy quickly and easily.

  83. When we are debtors to the flesh,

  84. we satisfy the desires of the flesh

  85. by the deeds of our bodies.

  86. The deeds of the body are mentioned in Romans 1,

    Romans 1:18–32

  87. verses 18 to 32.

  88. So they include idolatry, sexual immorality,

  89. covetousness, malaise, gossips,

  90. and disobedience to parents.

  91. Such deeds are designed to get what the flesh wants

  92. quickly and easily.

  93. All right, we go to Romans 8, 13.

  94. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die.

  95. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body,

  96. you will live.

  97. The Israelites who grumble against God all died

  98. before they could enter the promised land.

  99. I do not know what they all died from,

  100. but I know that at least some of them

  101. did die from the effect of overeating

  102. because God gave them food

  103. and they ate so much that they died.

  104. It is a scary thing when God gives us

  105. what our flesh wants.

  106. Romans 1 again mentioned three times

  107. about God gave people

  108. according to what they wanted.

  109. Number one, according to the lust of their hearts,

  110. in verse 24.

  111. Number two, according to the dishonorable passions,

  112. in verse 26.

  113. And number three, according to their debased mind,

  114. verse 28.

  115. We know that instant noodles are tasty,

  116. quick, and easy to make.

  117. However, if we eat instant noodles every day,

  118. we will certainly die young.

  119. Eating just instant noodles every day

  120. is not only harmful to our bodies,

  121. it is also harmful to our characters.

  122. So, you see, preparing food,

  123. cooking, presenting food

  124. are all part of training for patients

  125. and for servanthood,

  126. for hospitality.

  127. And amazingly,

  128. as we spend time to prepare

  129. and cook and present food,

  130. we become able to taste an enjoyment

  131. that we never tasted before.

  132. If by the spirit we put to death

  133. the dish of the flesh,

  134. we will live.

  135. We will suddenly find that

  136. the things we enjoyed before

  137. were dishonorable,

  138. debased, or silly.

  139. And far glorious things

  140. have come to be part of our life.

  141. So do you know that

  142. there is a kind of love,

  143. a kind of joy,

  144. a kind of glory

  145. you can only have

  146. if only you would listen to God,

  147. trust him,

  148. and put to death

  149. the dish of your body.

  150. How do we put to death

  151. the dish of the body?

  152. The first step is to

  153. crucify ourselves with Jesus.

  154. So we read from Romans 6,

    Romans 6:6–8

  155. verses 6 to 8.

  156. We know that our old self

  157. was crucified with him

  158. in order that the body of sin

  159. might be brought to nothing

  160. so that we would no longer

  161. be enslaved to sin.

  162. For one who has died

  163. has been set free from sin.

  164. Now if we have died with Christ,

  165. we believe that

  166. we will also live with him.

  167. So now if we have died with Christ,

  168. we will also live with him.

  169. We no longer live as

  170. debtors to the flesh.

  171. Once we are free from the flesh,

  172. the Holy Spirit can then

  173. help us to remove

  174. the dish of the body.

  175. Does it mean that

  176. we now become debtors to God

  177. instead of debtors to the flesh?

  178. Yes, in a way, it does.

  179. In fact, we are always

  180. debtors to God

  181. because God created us

  182. and everything else.

  183. Now that God has redeemed us

  184. in Christ,

  185. we have become twice

  186. indebted to him.

  187. There is a debt

  188. called the debt of gratitude

  189. in many cultures.

  190. This is very common

  191. in Asian countries

  192. because of the big gap

  193. between the rich

  194. and the poor.

  195. So for example,

  196. if I'm very poor

  197. and I got a medical bill

  198. that I couldn't pay

  199. and that's very common

  200. in the Philippines

  201. and my boss

  202. or friend,

  203. whoever,

  204. who I'm rich,

  205. helped me to pay

  206. the medical bill,

  207. so under the practice

  208. of the debt

  209. of gratitude,

  210. I will be forever

  211. indebted to my boss.

  212. He can always tell me

  213. to do something for him,

  214. expect me to

  215. comply to his wishes.

  216. It is a debt

  217. that I could never

  218. finish repaying.

  219. While it is proper

  220. for us to be thankful

  221. to God's grace

  222. and mercy,

  223. God does not have

  224. the debt of gratitude

  225. in mind when he saves us

  226. because in Matthew 11,

  227. 28-30,

  228. Jesus said,

  229. Come to me,

  230. all who labor

  231. and are heavy laden,

  232. and I will give you rest.

  233. Take my yoke upon you

  234. and learn from me,

  235. for I am gentle

  236. and lowly in heart,

  237. and you will find rest

  238. for your souls.

  239. For my yoke is easy

  240. and my burden is light.

  241. The yoke of the flesh

  242. is heavy

  243. because it is a debt

  244. that we could

  245. never finish repaying.

  246. The yoke of Christ

  247. is light,

  248. even though it is also

  249. a debt that we could

  250. not repay

  251. because we have,

  252. it is light

  253. because we have been

  254. adopted as sons of God

  255. and fellow as with Christ.

  256. We note that

  257. while Romans 8-12

  258. says that

  259. we are debtors

  260. not to the flesh,

  261. it does not

  262. continue to say

  263. that we are debtors

  264. to the Spirit.

  265. So in Romans 8-14,

  266. it says,

  267. For all who are led

  268. by the Spirit of God

  269. are sons of God.

  270. So Romans 8-14

  271. says that

  272. we are a lot more

  273. than debtors

  274. to the Spirit.

  275. The Spirit is making us

  276. into sons

  277. of God.

  278. We are not

  279. only redeemed

  280. by our Master,

  281. we are also adopted

  282. as sons of our Father.

  283. Sons are all those

  284. who will receive

  285. the inheritance

  286. and have all the

  287. privilege at home.

  288. So in the sense

  289. of inheritance,

  290. it does not matter

  291. if we are male

  292. or female,

  293. we are all sons

  294. in Christ.

  295. If Christ

  296. died to just

  297. secure the forgiveness

  298. of our sins,

  299. we will always

  300. live in fear

  301. because we do not

  302. know how

  303. or when

  304. we could

  305. fully repay Christ.

  306. But Christ

  307. died also

  308. to secure

  309. our adoption

  310. as sons of God.

  311. I owe my Father

  312. a lot,

  313. but such debt

  314. is different

  315. to the debt

  316. to my rich boss.

  317. I know that

  318. my Father

  319. delighted in giving

  320. me everything,

  321. even his own life.

  322. I would

  323. sadden my Father

  324. if I tell him

  325. that I want

  326. to repay

  327. all that he has

  328. done for me.

  329. However,

  330. I will also

  331. sadden my Father

  332. if I decide

  333. to live a life

  334. unworthy of his name.

  335. That is why

  336. it is only those

  337. who are led

  338. by the Spirit

  339. are sons of God.

  340. As the Son

  341. of God,

  342. Jesus was led

  343. by the Spirit

  344. to spend 40 days

  345. in the wilderness

  346. to be tempted

  347. by the devil.

  348. The devil's strategy

  349. was to appeal

  350. to the flesh

  351. of Jesus.

  352. He said,

  353. if you are

  354. the Son of God,

  355. you should have

  356. the power

  357. and privilege

  358. to satisfy

  359. yourself

  360. instantly

  361. and easily.

  362. So in Matthew

  363. 4,

  364. 3-4,

  365. we read,

  366. And the tempter

  367. came and

  368. said to him,

  369. If you are

  370. the Son of God,

  371. command these

  372. stones to become

  373. loaves of bread.

  374. But Jesus

  375. answered,

  376. It is written,

  377. Men shall not

  378. live by bread

  379. alone,

  380. but by every

  381. word that

  382. comes from

  383. the mouth

  384. of God.

  385. Jesus was

  386. telling the devil

  387. that it was

  388. exactly because

  389. I am the Son

  390. of God,

  391. I will not

  392. grumble

  393. when I am

  394. hungry.

  395. My Father

  396. tells me to

  397. fast for 40

  398. days,

  399. and I will

  400. gladly live

  401. by his word.

  402. Jesus

  403. showed us

  404. what it is

  405. like to be led

  406. by the Spirit

  407. to live

  408. like a child

  409. of God.

  410. He delighted

  411. in God's

  412. word.

  413. He obeyed God

  414. not out of fear,

  415. but out of joy.

  416. So we go to

  417. Romans 8.15,

  418. For you did not

  419. receive the spirit

  420. of slavery to

  421. fall back into

  422. fear, but you

  423. have received the

  424. spirit of adoption

  425. as sons, by whom

  426. we cry,

  427. Abba,

  428. Father.

  429. For many of us

  430. who grow up in

  431. Christian families

  432. under the case

  433. of loving fathers,

  434. we may not

  435. appreciate the

  436. full impact of

  437. calling God

  438. Abba,

  439. Father.

  440. And if we have

  441. a chance to

  442. visit the orphanage,

  443. we might start

  444. to understand

  445. what a privilege

  446. to have someone

  447. for us to call

  448. Abba,

  449. Father.

  450. Many children

  451. there would

  452. long to be

  453. accepted as

  454. someone's children.

  455. But for

  456. many of us

  457. who are adults

  458. who have been

  459. living independently

  460. from God,

  461. either

  462. rebelliously

  463. or religiously,

  464. God

  465. tends to become

  466. a stranger

  467. and we have

  468. no interest

  469. in knowing

  470. him

  471. intimately.

  472. many.

  473. But when

  474. the spirit

  475. of life

  476. comes to

  477. us,

  478. our hearts

  479. are drawn

  480. to God

  481. and a miracle

  482. happens

  483. as we start

  484. to taste

  485. the love

  486. and sweetness

  487. of calling

  488. God

  489. Abba,

  490. Father.

  491. The sweetness

  492. of no longer

  493. living like

  494. an orphan,

  495. we are love

  496. and we belong.

  497. Romans 8,

  498. 16-17,

  499. the spirit

  500. himself bears

  501. witness with

  502. our spirit

  503. and we are

  504. children of

  505. God.

  506. And if

  507. children,

  508. then heirs,

  509. heirs of

  510. God and

  511. fellow heirs

  512. with Christ,

  513. provided we

  514. suffer with

  515. him in

  516. order that

  517. we may

  518. also be

  519. glorified

  520. with him.

  521. In the

  522. Gospels,

  523. we see

  524. Jesus calling

  525. God as

  526. his father

  527. very laterally.

  528. If we are

  529. not used to

  530. calling God

  531. Father,

  532. we may feel

  533. a bit uncertain

  534. calling God

  535. as our father,

  536. especially in

  537. front of other

  538. people,

  539. we may feel

  540. we are being

  541. presumptuous to

  542. address God

  543. as our

  544. father.

  545. The Holy

  546. Spirit himself

  547. helps us to

  548. be sure of

  549. our status

  550. as God's

  551. children,

  552. reminds us

  553. God's promises,

  554. he helps us

  555. to delight in

  556. God's word,

  557. he helps us

  558. to pray,

  559. especially when

  560. we pray,

  561. we just

  562. suddenly feel

  563. so lateral

  564. to call God

  565. as our

  566. father,

  567. and he

  568. helps us

  569. to sing

  570. songs of

  571. worship to

  572. God.

  573. He moved

  574. us to

  575. care for

  576. God's

  577. other

  578. children,

  579. so calling

  580. God as

  581. our

  582. father also

  583. means that

  584. we would

  585. care for

  586. others in

  587. the same

  588. family.

  589. So all

  590. these things

  591. bear witness

  592. that we

  593. are children

  594. of God.

  595. It is

  596. difficult for

  597. us to

  598. comprehend

  599. what being

  600. heirs of

  601. God and

  602. fellow heirs

  603. with Christ

  604. means.

  605. We are

  606. more than

  607. privileged to

  608. be accepted

  609. by God,

  610. but God

  611. wants to

  612. give us

  613. more.

  614. We shall

  615. come to

  616. this point

  617. a bit

  618. more when

  619. we get

  620. to Romans

  621. 8.32,

  622. which says,

  623. He who

  624. did not

  625. spare his

  626. own son,

  627. but gave

  628. him up

  629. for us

  630. all,

  631. how will

  632. he not

  633. also with

  634. him graciously

  635. give us

  636. all things?

  637. In

  638. Christ,

  639. we have

  640. the equal

  641. status as

  642. heirs of

  643. God as

  644. Christ.

  645. God wants

  646. to give

  647. us all

  648. things.

  649. God wants

  650. us to know

  651. life as

  652. life should

  653. be,

  654. full of

  655. truth,

  656. love,

  657. full of

  658. beauty,

  659. full of

  660. joy,

  661. and full

  662. of

  663. righteousness.

  664. However,

  665. verse 17

  666. sounds like

  667. a fine

  668. print in

  669. the contract.

  670. It says,

  671. Provided you

  672. suffer with

  673. him in

  674. order that

  675. you may

  676. also be

  677. glorified with

  678. him.

  679. But verse 17

  680. is not a

  681. fine print,

  682. it is just

  683. a repeat of

  684. what has

  685. been front

  686. and center

  687. of Romans.

  688. So in

  689. Romans 5,

    Romans 5:1–5

  690. verses 1 to

  691. 5,

  692. we read,

  693. Therefore,

  694. since we

  695. have been

  696. justified by

  697. faith,

  698. we have

  699. peace with

  700. God through

  701. our Lord

  702. Jesus Christ.

  703. Through

  704. him we

  705. have also

  706. obtained

  707. access by

  708. faith into

  709. his grace

  710. in which

  711. we stand,

  712. and we

  713. rejoice in

  714. the hope of

  715. the glory

  716. of God.

  717. More than

  718. that,

  719. we rejoice

  720. in our

  721. sufferings,

  722. knowing that

  723. suffering

  724. produces

  725. endurance,

  726. endurance

  727. produces

  728. character,

  729. and character

  730. produces

  731. hope,

  732. and hope

  733. does not

  734. put us

  735. to shame,

  736. because God's

  737. love has

  738. been poured

  739. into our

  740. hearts through

  741. the Holy

  742. Spirit,

  743. whom has

  744. been given

  745. to us.

  746. So the

  747. Holy Spirit

  748. has been

  749. given to

  750. us,

  751. and the

  752. Holy Spirit

  753. changes our

  754. longings.

  755. In the

  756. past,

  757. we seek

  758. greatest

  759. enjoyment

  760. from this

  761. world

  762. before we

  763. die,

  764. and therefore

  765. we tend

  766. to grumble

  767. when things

  768. don't happen

  769. according to

  770. what we

  771. like it

  772. to be.

  773. Now,

  774. with the

  775. Holy Spirit

  776. in us,

  777. we long

  778. for something

  779. far greater,

  780. the glory

  781. of God.

  782. We are

  783. waiting for

  784. the time

  785. when God

  786. appears in

  787. all his

  788. glory,

  789. and we

  790. share in

  791. this glory.

  792. Such a

  793. longing is

  794. so strong

  795. that we

  796. want to

  797. prepare for

  798. this.

  799. We rejoice

  800. in suffering

  801. because we

  802. know suffering

  803. produces

  804. endurance,

  805. and endurance

  806. produces

  807. proven

  808. character.

  809. it would

  810. be a

  811. great thing

  812. when we

  813. can rejoice

  814. in our

  815. suffering

  816. with Christ

  817. as evangelists

  818. or missionaries.

  819. However,

  820. before we

  821. get there,

  822. we can

  823. start with

  824. more mundane

  825. sufferings,

  826. sufferings that

  827. we go through

  828. day by day,

  829. such as

  830. injuring our

  831. knees in

  832. soccer games,

  833. needing to

  834. get up

  835. every day,

  836. every morning,

  837. very early,

  838. to go to

  839. work,

  840. doing

  841. ministries or

  842. laundries for

  843. 20 years

  844. before getting

  845. much appreciation.

  846. So all

  847. these things

  848. that we

  849. meet every

  850. day,

  851. and see

  852. what's our

  853. attitude,

  854. we go

  855. through them.

  856. Do we

  857. grumble and

  858. say,

  859. God,

  860. why do you

  861. let me

  862. go through

  863. this?

  864. Or do we

  865. learn to

  866. rejoice in

  867. it,

  868. knowing that

  869. suffering

  870. produces

  871. endurance,

  872. and endurance

  873. proves our

  874. character that

  875. has been

  876. changed by

  877. the Holy

  878. Spirit.

  879. So when

  880. we can

  881. rejoice in

  882. such mundane

  883. suffering,

  884. we will

  885. look back

  886. with amazement

  887. that we

  888. have the

  889. patience to

  890. go through

  891. them without

  892. grumbling.

  893. So just like

  894. preparing the

  895. Israelites for

  896. the promised

  897. land,

  898. God is

  899. preparing us

  900. for the

  901. land of

  902. glory.

  903. Suffering is

  904. necessary to

  905. put to

  906. death the

  907. deeds of

  908. the body.

  909. Suffering is

  910. necessary to

  911. build our

  912. character.

  913. Such

  914. character,

  915. at least the

  916. beginning of

  917. such character,

  918. is necessary for

  919. us to enjoy

  920. and appreciate

  921. the glory of

  922. God.

  923. So through

  924. the redeeming

  925. word of

  926. Christ,

  927. through the

  928. transforming

  929. word of

  930. the Holy

  931. Spirit,

  932. through the

  933. adopting

  934. word of

  935. God,

  936. we can be

  937. free from

  938. the foolish

  939. and short

  940. sighted ways

  941. of the

  942. flesh,

  943. and we

  944. have the

  945. hope of

  946. glory.

  947. So I

  948. would like

  949. to sum

  950. up with

  951. three points.

  952. Point one,

  953. we are

  954. debtors.

  955. We are

  956. debtors,

  957. however,

  958. we sometimes

  959. live more

  960. like creditors.

  961. Creditors are

  962. people who

  963. think they

  964. are entitled,

  965. to everything.

  966. They

  967. grumble when

  968. they do

  969. not get

  970. what they

  971. want instantly.

  972. The story

  973. of the

  974. prodigal

  975. son tells

  976. us about

  977. a young

  978. man who

  979. wanted to

  980. enjoy his

  981. inheritance

  982. instantly.

  983. When he

  984. used up

  985. his money

  986. and suffered,

  987. he came

  988. to his

  989. sins and

  990. remembered

  991. his father's

  992. kindness and

  993. wanted to

  994. return to

  995. his father

  996. as a

  997. slave,

  998. but his

  999. father welcomed

  1000. him as

  1001. a son.

  1002. A few

  1003. days ago,

  1004. it was

  1005. requested

  1006. by an

  1007. elderly

  1008. woman to

  1009. do a

  1010. home

  1011. visit

  1012. for her.

  1013. When I

  1014. went to

  1015. the house,

  1016. it was a

  1017. very run-down

  1018. house,

  1019. one of the

  1020. worst

  1021. houses I

  1022. have ever

  1023. seen.

  1024. The

  1025. woman

  1026. had oxygen

  1027. all the

  1028. time.

  1029. He's very

  1030. thin because

  1031. he's

  1032. difficult

  1033. breathing.

  1034. He's only

  1035. very thin

  1036. clothing on

  1037. and there's

  1038. no heating

  1039. in the

  1040. living room.

  1041. after the

  1042. consultation,

  1043. this patient

  1044. insisted on

  1045. paying me,

  1046. which is

  1047. very,

  1048. very surprising

  1049. because I've

  1050. done my

  1051. home visits.

  1052. Hardly

  1053. anyone ever

  1054. even asked

  1055. me whether

  1056. they should

  1057. pay me

  1058. anything.

  1059. They just

  1060. expected that

  1061. it's all

  1062. free and

  1063. provided.

  1064. I'm very

  1065. surprised that

  1066. this woman

  1067. would ask.

  1068. I said,

  1069. no, you don't

  1070. need to pay.

  1071. She insisted

  1072. on paying

  1073. me.

  1074. I said,

  1075. no, you

  1076. just call

  1077. the practice

  1078. and the

  1079. next day

  1080. they will

  1081. settle that.

  1082. When she

  1083. called the

  1084. practice,

  1085. the girls

  1086. would look

  1087. at the

  1088. account and

  1089. say,

  1090. it's been

  1091. paid.

  1092. But the

  1093. fact that

  1094. she's

  1095. living in

  1096. such a

  1097. poor

  1098. condition

  1099. and wanted

  1100. to pay

  1101. me,

  1102. it just

  1103. shows the

  1104. character

  1105. of someone

  1106. who's

  1107. suffering.

  1108. But she

  1109. also

  1110. considers

  1111. other

  1112. people.

  1113. And that

  1114. moved me.

  1115. In Matthew

  1116. 5, 3,

  1117. Jesus said,

  1118. blessed are

  1119. the poor

  1120. in spirit,

  1121. for theirs

  1122. is the

  1123. kingdom of

  1124. heaven.

  1125. God is

  1126. not holding

  1127. us to the

  1128. depth of

  1129. gratitude.

  1130. However,

  1131. God would

  1132. be delighted

  1133. if we

  1134. show him

  1135. our

  1136. gratitude

  1137. of

  1138. depth

  1139. when we

  1140. let our

  1141. request

  1142. be

  1143. known to

  1144. him

  1145. with

  1146. thanksgiving.

  1147. Point

  1148. number

  1149. two,

  1150. be a

  1151. children

  1152. of God.

  1153. We

  1154. are

  1155. children

  1156. of God,

  1157. however,

  1158. we

  1159. sometimes

  1160. live more

  1161. like

  1162. orphans

  1163. of God.

  1164. Orphans

  1165. of God

  1166. are people

  1167. who know

  1168. God

  1169. but live

  1170. by their

  1171. own strength,

  1172. unlike

  1173. children of

  1174. the world.

  1175. Children of

  1176. the world

  1177. are people

  1178. who don't

  1179. know God

  1180. and live

  1181. by their

  1182. own strength.

  1183. Orphans

  1184. of God

  1185. are people

  1186. who know

  1187. God

  1188. and then

  1189. live

  1190. by their

  1191. own strength.

  1192. Orphans

  1193. of God

  1194. worry about

  1195. many things.

  1196. They rely

  1197. on their

  1198. performance

  1199. to gain

  1200. validation.

  1201. They envy

  1202. people

  1203. who get

  1204. more

  1205. recognition.

  1206. They try

  1207. their best

  1208. to appear

  1209. strong in

  1210. front of

  1211. people.

  1212. Suffering

  1213. breaks their

  1214. heart and

  1215. draws them

  1216. closer to

  1217. God's

  1218. heart.

  1219. Suffering

  1220. frees us

  1221. from being

  1222. orphans

  1223. of God

  1224. and transforms

  1225. us into

  1226. children of

  1227. God.

  1228. In 2 Corinthians

  1229. 12, 9-10,

  1230. God told

  1231. Paul,

  1232. my grace

  1233. is sufficient

  1234. for you

  1235. for my

  1236. power is

  1237. made perfect

  1238. in weakness.

  1239. Therefore,

  1240. and then

  1241. Paul said,

  1242. therefore I

  1243. will boast

  1244. all the more

  1245. gladly of

  1246. my weaknesses

  1247. so that

  1248. the power

  1249. of Christ

  1250. may rest

  1251. on me

  1252. for the

  1253. sake of

  1254. Christ

  1255. and I

  1256. am content

  1257. with

  1258. weaknesses

  1259. in

  1260. some

  1261. hardships,

  1262. persecutions

  1263. and calamities.

  1264. For when

  1265. I am weak,

  1266. I am strong.

  1267. point number

  1268. three,

  1269. adopted for

  1270. glory or

  1271. adopted for

  1272. a true

  1273. life.

  1274. Many

  1275. times when

  1276. we are

  1277. suffering,

  1278. we start

  1279. to wonder

  1280. what we

  1281. did to

  1282. deserve

  1283. such

  1284. hardship.

  1285. You may

  1286. think that

  1287. God was

  1288. still punishing

  1289. us.

  1290. In times

  1291. like this,

  1292. maybe remember

  1293. the fact that

  1294. we have been

  1295. adopted for

  1296. glory.

  1297. The Holy

  1298. Spirit is

  1299. leading us

  1300. to the

  1301. land of

  1302. glory.

  1303. the present

  1304. suffering is

  1305. not only

  1306. not worth

  1307. comparing with

  1308. the glory

  1309. that is to

  1310. come.

  1311. That is

  1312. going to

  1313. be the

  1314. next week's

  1315. sermon.

  1316. So the

  1317. present

  1318. suffering is

  1319. not only

  1320. not worth

  1321. comparing with

  1322. the glory

  1323. that is to

  1324. come.

  1325. It is also

  1326. necessary to

  1327. mold us into

  1328. the children

  1329. of God.

  1330. As we

  1331. move towards

  1332. the land

  1333. of glory

  1334. with the

  1335. help of

  1336. the Holy

  1337. Spirit,

  1338. we put to

  1339. death the

  1340. deeds of the

  1341. body.

  1342. we learn

  1343. to relate

  1344. to God

  1345. as our

  1346. father.

  1347. We rejoice

  1348. in

  1349. sufferings.

  1350. I will

  1351. end with

  1352. a testimony

  1353. from John

  1354. Anderson.

  1355. This

  1356. testimony

  1357. was forwarded

  1358. to me by

  1359. David

  1360. Coderwood,

  1361. written by

  1362. a great

  1363. foreign

  1364. auditor of

  1365. the

  1366. Australian,

  1367. appeared

  1368. in an

  1369. article

  1370. on the

  1371. Weekend

  1372. Australian

  1373. magazine

  1374. May 11,

  1375. this last

  1376. month.

  1377. the

  1378. article,

  1379. the

  1380. article

  1381. says,

  1382. Anderson's

  1383. youngest

  1384. son,

  1385. Andrew,

  1386. was born

  1387. when

  1388. Anderson

  1389. was a

  1390. BC

  1391. cabinet

  1392. minister.

  1393. For

  1394. those of

  1395. you who

  1396. don't

  1397. know,

  1398. John

  1399. Anderson

  1400. was the

  1401. deputy

  1402. prime

  1403. minister

  1404. of

  1405. Australia

  1406. about

  1407. 15

  1408. years

  1409. ago.

  1410. At

  1411. that

  1412. time,

  1413. the

  1414. youngest

  1415. son was

  1416. born,

  1417. called

  1418. Andrew.

  1419. Andrew

  1420. was profoundly

  1421. disabled.

  1422. He lived

  1423. only a

  1424. few

  1425. short

  1426. months

  1427. and was

  1428. constantly

  1429. in and

  1430. out

  1431. hospital.

  1432. Julia,

  1433. his wife,

  1434. wrote an

  1435. essay

  1436. recalling

  1437. that the

  1438. couple

  1439. they were

  1440. considered

  1441. an

  1442. abortion,

  1443. but in

  1444. fact gave

  1445. thanks for

  1446. Andrew's

  1447. life.

  1448. So in

  1449. his

  1450. urology

  1451. for his

  1452. son,

  1453. delivered

  1454. on

  1455. August

  1456. 19,

  1457. 1998,

  1458. Anderson

  1459. said,

  1460. Andrew's

  1461. life often

  1462. saw us

  1463. wondering

  1464. what we

  1465. have done

  1466. to

  1467. deserve

  1468. so much

  1469. difficulty.

  1470. His

  1471. passing

  1472. sees us

  1473. wondering

  1474. what we

  1475. did to

  1476. deserve

  1477. so rich

  1478. a blessing.

  1479. This

  1480. little

  1481. fellow

  1482. was

  1483. quite

  1484. defenseless,

  1485. yet he

  1486. totally

  1487. and utterly

  1488. disarmed

  1489. us.

  1490. God

  1491. taught us

  1492. something

  1493. we have

  1494. heard about

  1495. but not

  1496. really

  1497. understood,

  1498. that his

  1499. grace is

  1500. sufficient for

  1501. us,

  1502. for his

  1503. power is

  1504. made perfect

  1505. in

  1506. weakness.

  1507. Let us

  1508. pray.

  1509. Father,

  1510. we have

  1511. heard so

  1512. many promises

  1513. in your

  1514. word.

  1515. Father,

  1516. may you

  1517. make them

  1518. realities

  1519. in our

  1520. lives.

  1521. thank you,

  1522. Lord.

  1523. We want

  1524. to be

  1525. your

  1526. children

  1527. and live

  1528. out

  1529. that

  1530. life

  1531. they

  1532. intend

  1533. us to

  1534. have.

  1535. For we

  1536. ask in

  1537. Jesus'

  1538. name.

  1539. Amen.
