  1. Good morning.

  2. My name is Bo. I'm one of the elders in the church.

  3. Today we will be talking on Psalm 102.

  4. I hope I will do justice to this great psalm.

  5. Before we start, shall we pray?

  6. May I pray?

  7. Lord, help us to pressure all the pressure that we have in Christ.

  8. Help us through this psalm to get to know you and worship you aright.

  9. Thank you, Father. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

  10. So for today I've got three M's.

  11. First of all, I'd like to share with you how to read psalms.

  12. That's from my own experience. Hopefully that will help.

  13. Some of you to appreciate the psalms.

  14. And then we'll go to Psalm 102 in particular, how we can read it.

  15. And then we'll talk about afflictions or suffering.

  16. All right?

  17. So for me, I learned, I mean, psalms usually is quite hard in terms of reading psalms for many years

  18. until I learned how to read psalms.

  19. First of all, psalms are prayers.

  20. And so sometimes it's shocking to see the expression in the psalms.

  21. But they are prayers, and God wants us to pray to Him truthfully.

  22. And so they are very raw feelings.

  23. And there's no makeup in the expression.

  24. There's no fancy dressing.

  25. And so we need to understand that it's deep feeling of people who pray to God through psalms.

  26. And there's psalms, the prayers, or psalms are the words that God has given to us to speak to Him.

  27. Okay, that's one thing.

  28. Second one is that we need to understand Psalm 1 and Psalm 2 very well to know the psalms.

  29. Because the other psalms usually refer back to Psalm 1 and Psalm 2.

  30. If we do not understand Psalm 1 and Psalm 2, it's very hard to understand the other psalms.

  31. So that is the second tip.

  32. The third one is psalms are written in the structure of like climbing a mountain.

  33. Okay, so there's an ascend, and then there's a summit, and there's a descent.

  34. So we will see that the summit, as it climbs up the mountain,

  35. it will come up with a different sort of emotion.

  36. And then in the summit, it will immerse in the glory of the summit,

  37. like someone climbing a mountain.

  38. And then he descends, there's a different emotion.

  39. And the summit is usually roughly in the middle of the psalm.

  40. So if you want to know what is the most important part of the psalm,

  41. usually you go to the middle part, okay, or somewhere there.

  42. And so these are the three things that help me to read the psalms.

  43. So Psalm 102, we can go through that structure.

  44. To start with the ascend, the ascending part, so the part one,

  45. we can see that the psalmist is ascending with a lot of emotion

  46. in the suffering that is affecting him, and also his people.

  47. Okay, it's not only him.

  48. He talks about his people, the city of Zion.

  49. And there are three parts of suffering that we can see that he's expressing.

  50. One is the physical one, so it could be due to illnesses,

  51. or famine, or enemy invasion.

  52. We don't know exactly what the psalmist was suffering,

  53. but at least we know that the city of Zion was destroyed,

  54. and that would be the enemy taunting him and invading him.

  55. So the psalmist himself may be sick as well.

  56. We are not sure.

  57. There's a mental affliction.

  58. So he said all days his enemies teased him and used his name as curse.

  59. And the third part is relational afflictions.

  60. So he was suffering alone.

  61. His friends and God seemed to have abandoned him.

  62. So the psalmist, Peter with God to rescue him,

  63. but it seems that God has hidden his faith from him.

  64. So that's how he was ascending to the mountain.

  65. And then he gets to the psalmist in verse 12.

  66. So the psalmist said,

  67. But you, O Lord, are entorned forever.

  68. So there is a psalmist for the psalm.

  69. So he said that God is in control and in charge forever.

  70. God is there for all generations.

  71. And because of that,

  72. there's three things also change to the perception of the psalmist,

  73. to his suffering.

  74. First of all,

  75. in terms of time,

  76. he said that God is forever.

  77. So he's comparing his suffering,

  78. his life,

  79. with God's eternity.

  80. So suddenly,

  81. his suffering becomes less of an issue

  82. in the sense that

  83. his suffering is only transient.

  84. And there's eternity with God.

  85. So it changes perception in there.

  86. So first one is time.

  87. Secondly,

  88. it's to do with white.

  89. White has been heavy.

  90. So when we are suffering,

  91. we think that it's so hard to bear,

  92. so difficult to go through this.

  93. It's weighing on us.

  94. But when we see God's glory,

  95. as he saw that,

  96. the glory of God transformed his perception

  97. of affliction and shame.

  98. Because the glory of God is such a big thing

  99. that it just overwhelms him,

  100. his own suffering becomes insignificant.

  101. And so the second thing is white.

  102. The third thing is purpose.

  103. He sees God's sovereignty,

  104. and so that reassures him

  105. that God knows about his suffering

  106. and cares about that.

  107. And so the perception of suffering

  108. is changed as he went up to the summit.

  109. So the three things,

  110. time, weight, and purpose.

  111. And then he descends the mountain.

  112. And as he descends,

  113. you can see the change

  114. in his focus of things.

  115. He was praying for the restoration of Zion,

  116. the restoration of the nations,

  117. the restoration of worship towards God.

  118. Okay, so there's a three part

  119. of Psalm 102.

  120. Now how do we apply to us

  121. and how does it affect our life?

  122. Then there are three ways

  123. for us to read the Psalms or anything,

  124. at least three ways.

  125. Think of, as we approach life,

  126. we can approach it

  127. with three different sort of mindsets

  128. or mixture of it.

  129. I'll call them devotional,

  130. rational, and emotional.

  131. You can read that

  132. in the Buridding Kawa

  133. about those three mindsets

  134. that we use to approach life.

  135. Let us try to read the Psalm

  136. mainly with just an emotional mindset.

  137. If we just use it,

  138. read it from the point of emotion

  139. and feelings.

  140. So the first half of the Psalm

  141. is full of feelings.

  142. So with this mindset,

  143. we could feel the desperation,

  144. the fear,

  145. the pain,

  146. and the loneliness of the Psalmist.

  147. In the first two verses alone,

  148. the Psalmist pleaded with God five times

  149. to listen and respond to him,

  150. to do something about his suffering.

  151. The Psalmist is describing his afflictions

  152. as if he is living in hell.

  153. He's being burned,

  154. and his life is passing away like smoke.

  155. His heart is so depressed

  156. that he does not enjoy his food anymore.

  157. He's eating ashes,

  158. possibly as a sign of deep grieving.

  159. He feels that nobody is standing with him.

  160. He thinks he's suffering alone,

  161. and God does not seem

  162. to have done anything to help him.

  163. God seems to have led his enemies

  164. to triumph over him.

  165. He thinks that God has conspired against him,

  166. as God has taken him up

  167. and thrown him down.

  168. And he wants to enjoy good health

  169. and respect from others.

  170. Now he's sick.

  171. And his name is used for a curse.

  172. It's quite easy for us

  173. to think like this in life.

  174. I have a patient come in and said,

  175. she's a Christian,

  176. she said,

  177. in the past,

  178. I don't have any illness.

  179. I was too well.

  180. God was good to me.

  181. I said,

  182. isn't God good to you now?

  183. He was taken aback

  184. when I asked him this,

  185. asked her these questions.

  186. She couldn't answer me.

  187. So this is how,

  188. if you just use emotional mindset

  189. to assess or approach things in our life.

  190. So even if we look at this psalmist

  191. as he approached the mountain top,

  192. if we use the emotional mindset alone

  193. to understand the psalm,

  194. we can sense that

  195. the psalmist may be resentful to God.

  196. He was maybe saying that,

  197. oh God,

  198. you are enthroned forever up there

  199. and I am suffering down here.

  200. It's not fair.

  201. I mean,

  202. why is this one happening?

  203. Why is this happening to me?

  204. If he just uses this mindset

  205. to read the psalm,

  206. it will be very difficult

  207. for us to understand

  208. the second half of the psalm.

  209. It doesn't make sense

  210. except verses 23, 24

  211. when the psalmist complains again

  212. about God shortening his life.

  213. So I would like to add

  214. a rational mindset

  215. to the reading of the psalm.

  216. So we are now reading it

  217. with both emotion and logic.

  218. So I said,

  219. I feel sick.

  220. I feel depressed.

  221. I feel persecuted by others.

  222. So besides feeling sorry

  223. and sad for myself,

  224. I start to think about my afflictions.

  225. Are my afflictions caused

  226. by my own doing,

  227. other people's doing,

  228. or God's doing?

  229. The psalmist has concluded

  230. that it was all God's doing

  231. because in verse 10,

  232. it said,

  233. because of your indignation and anger,

  234. for you have taken me up

  235. and thrown me down.

  236. And verse 23,

  237. he has broken my strength

  238. in mid-cost.

  239. He has shortened my days.

  240. The psalmist does not explain

  241. why God was doing

  242. such a thing to him.

  243. Maybe he does not understand either.

  244. However, the psalmist understands

  245. that his afflictions

  246. are tied with the destruction of Zion.

  247. He suffers more intensely

  248. as he thinks about Zion,

  249. as he holds on to the dust,

  250. the broken stones of Zion

  251. in his hands.

  252. So to the Old Testament people,

  253. Zion was such an important place.

  254. So if you don't understand it,

  255. it will have to understand this psalm.

  256. So Zion was a place

  257. of God's temple

  258. and God's king.

  259. It was the only place on earth

  260. where a person could meet God

  261. without being consumed

  262. by God's holiness.

  263. Now the city of Zion

  264. had been destroyed.

  265. Where could the psalmist

  266. meet God?

  267. His only hope

  268. was if God

  269. would restore Zion.

  270. Only then

  271. would the prayer

  272. of the destitute

  273. be heard by God.

  274. So the rational mindset

  275. helps us to understand

  276. the psalm better.

  277. But still,

  278. not enough

  279. for us to understand it

  280. fully and well.

  281. For what purpose

  282. would God

  283. break the psalmist's strength

  284. in midcourse

  285. and shorten his days?

  286. While his suffering

  287. is most likely related

  288. to the collective

  289. rebellion

  290. of his nation

  291. against God,

  292. how is his suffering

  293. related to the hope

  294. of having a people

  295. yet to be created

  296. to praise the Lord?

  297. And the kingdoms

  298. gather to worship

  299. the Lord?

  300. And the children

  301. of the Lord's servant

  302. having a secure dwelling?

  303. So it doesn't

  304. explain all this

  305. just by reasoning

  306. or logic.

  307. So from my

  308. interactions

  309. with patience,

  310. I realize that

  311. many people

  312. approach life

  313. mostly with

  314. an emotional mindset.

  315. We do the same

  316. when we say,

  317. I feel comfortable

  318. or I do not

  319. feel comfortable

  320. about something.

  321. The criterion

  322. for approving

  323. or disapproving

  324. something

  325. has become

  326. how we feel.

  327. Even in ministries,

  328. we focus more

  329. on making people

  330. happy

  331. than helping people

  332. to be holy.

  333. We pray more

  334. for comfort

  335. than for confirmation

  336. to the image

  337. of Jesus.

  338. Patients

  339. with chronic illness,

  340. especially chronic pain,

  341. find it very difficult

  342. to cope with

  343. the persistent

  344. affliction.

  345. They tend to

  346. blame others,

  347. including the

  348. doctors for their

  349. persisting pain.

  350. Some patients

  351. try to understand

  352. the afflictions.

  353. Do I inherit

  354. this from my parents?

  355. Is my affliction

  356. caused by my choices

  357. of activities

  358. and diet

  359. during my younger days?

  360. Is my affliction

  361. caused by the

  362. environment I live in?

  363. So understanding

  364. the cost

  365. helps a bit.

  366. But the affliction

  367. remains difficult

  368. to live with.

  369. It is only

  370. when they have

  371. something bigger

  372. than themselves

  373. to live for.

  374. They could start

  375. to be free

  376. from the torment

  377. of the affliction.

  378. Now let's

  379. add devotional mindset

  380. to the psalm.

  381. This is a radical

  382. change in mindset

  383. because the focus

  384. is no longer

  385. on the author's

  386. feeling or reasons.

  387. The focus

  388. is now shifted

  389. to God.

  390. So God

  391. is enthroned

  392. forever.

  393. The psalmist

  394. has seen history

  395. and his own experience

  396. with God

  397. being center

  398. of the universe.

  399. His main concern

  400. is God's will

  401. and God's glory.

  402. So to understand

  403. the psalm better

  404. we refer to

  405. Psalm 2.

  406. So Psalm 2

    Psalms 2:6

  407. verse 6

  408. God says

  409. As for me

  410. I have set

  411. my king on Zion

  412. my holy hill.

  413. By the time

  414. Psalm 102

  415. was written

  416. the city of Zion

  417. had been destroyed.

  418. The temple

  419. had been destroyed

  420. and her king

  421. was suffering.

  422. The writer

  423. of Psalm 102

  424. could be the king

  425. then

  426. or at least

  427. the leader

  428. of God's people.

  429. With a devotional

  430. mindset

  431. we can see

  432. that while

  433. the psalmist

  434. was in pain

  435. and shame

  436. by his enemies

  437. his main concern

  438. was not so much

  439. of his own

  440. pain and shame

  441. his concern

  442. was with God's

  443. honor.

  444. What

  445. happened to

  446. God's promise

  447. in Psalm 2

  448. that his king

  449. would be in Zion?

  450. How could

  451. a good

  452. a great God

  453. let his

  454. anointed king

  455. suffer?

  456. his anointed

  457. city be

  458. captured?

  459. His temple

  460. be destroyed?

  461. How do we know

  462. that?

  463. This was the

  464. writer's concern.

  465. So that's from

  466. the second

  467. half of the

  468. psalm.

  469. So as a

  470. psalmist

  471. descended the

  472. mountain

  473. he was

  474. longing for

  475. something.

  476. He did not

  477. pray for his

  478. own comfort.

  479. He prayed for

  480. one,

  481. nations who

  482. fear the

  483. name of the

  484. Lord.

  485. Two,

  486. Zion to be

  487. rebuilt.

  488. Three,

  489. a people to

  490. be created

  491. to worship

  492. the Lord

  493. and for

  494. the prayers

  495. of the

  496. destitute

  497. and the

  498. prisoners

  499. will be

  500. heard and

  501. their afflictions

  502. will be

  503. transformed to

  504. God's

  505. praises.

  506. So at

  507. this point

  508. we can

  509. appreciate

  510. that this

  511. psalm is

  512. actually

  513. written

  514. by Jesus

  515. Christ.

  516. It's a

  517. prayer of

  518. the Lord

  519. Jesus Christ

  520. because he

  521. is the

  522. only one

  523. who will

  524. fit in

  525. this

  526. picture

  527. because he

  528. is the

  529. only person

  530. who can

  531. rightfully

  532. expect God

  533. not to

  534. hide his

  535. faith from

  536. him.

  537. So when

  538. we look

  539. at

  540. Psalms,

  541. many times

  542. the

  543. psalm has

  544. asked God

  545. not to

  546. hide his

  547. faith from

  548. them.

  549. In actual

  550. fact,

  551. if we pray

  552. the same

  553. way on

  554. our own,

  555. we could

  556. not expect

  557. God not to

  558. hide his

  559. faith from

  560. us,

  561. from our

  562. sinful

  563. nature.

  564. And it

  565. would be

  566. illogical

  567. just to

  568. pray like

  569. that,

  570. except if

  571. the person

  572. is without

  573. sin.

  574. And so

  575. Jesus Christ

  576. is the

  577. only one

  578. who can

  579. rightfully

  580. expect God

  581. not to

  582. hide his

  583. faith from

  584. him.

  585. But God

  586. did hide

  587. his faith

  588. from him.

  589. And Jesus

  590. Christ is the

  591. only person

  592. who does

  593. not deserve

  594. any suffering

  595. because he

  596. never sinned.

  597. But he

  598. was afflicted

  599. and shamed

  600. unjustly.

  601. He was

  602. not only

  603. afflicted,

  604. he was

  605. afflicted so

  606. severely that

  607. his bones

  608. cling to

  609. his flesh,

  610. as the

  611. son said.

  612. And also

  613. he was

  614. afflicted

  615. alone with

  616. all his

  617. allies

  618. leaving him.

  619. And

  620. thirdly,

  621. Jesus Christ

  622. is the

  623. only person

  624. who can

  625. expect to

  626. live forever

  627. because of

  628. his obedience

  629. and relationship

  630. to God.

  631. But he

  632. was condemned

  633. by God

  634. and his

  635. life was

  636. shortened

  637. in God's

  638. wrath.

  639. So we

  640. can refer

  641. this to

  642. 53

  643. verses 3

  644. to 6.

  645. It says

  646. that he

  647. was despised

  648. and rejected

  649. by man,

  650. a man of

  651. sorrow and

  652. acquainted with

  653. grief.

  654. And as

  655. one from

  656. whom men

  657. hide their

  658. faces,

  659. he was

  660. despised,

  661. and we

  662. esteem him

  663. not.

  664. Surely

  665. he has

  666. borne our

  667. grief and

  668. carried our

  669. sorrow,

  670. yet we

  671. esteem him

  672. stricken,

  673. smitten by

  674. God,

  675. and afflicted.

  676. But he

  677. was wounded

  678. for our

  679. transgressions,

  680. he was

  681. crushed for

  682. our

  683. iniquities.

  684. Upon him

  685. was the

  686. chastisement

  687. of that

  688. brought us

  689. peace,

  690. and with

  691. his stripes

  692. we are

  693. healed.

  694. All we

  695. like sheep

  696. have gone

  697. astray,

  698. we have

  699. turned

  700. every one

  701. of us

  702. to his

  703. own way,

  704. and the

  705. Lord has

  706. laid on

  707. him the

  708. iniquity

  709. of us

  710. all.

  711. So,

  712. through

  713. these

  714. Isaiah

  715. verses,

  716. we can

  717. understand

  718. what Psalm

  719. 1 or 2

  720. is primarily

  721. about.

  722. We are

  723. thankful that

  724. the Psalm

  725. does not

  726. just end

  727. there.

  728. In

  729. verse 22

  730. and 23,

  731. Jesus was

  732. saying that

  733. his days

  734. have been

  735. cut short.

  736. He's

  737. appearing to

  738. the fact

  739. that God

  740. is eternal,

  741. and it's

  742. unthinkable

  743. that as the

  744. Son of God

  745. there's an

  746. ending to

  747. his days.

  748. So,

  749. how do

  750. we know

  751. this Psalm

  752. is about

  753. God's

  754. Son,

  755. about Jesus

  756. Christ?

  757. Because

  758. Hebrews 1

  759. 8 tells

  760. us that

  761. if we go

  762. to the

  763. book,

  764. Hebrews

    Hebrews 1:8

  765. chapter 1

  766. verse 8,

  767. it has

  768. got the

  769. exact

  770. code from

  771. verses 25

  772. to 21

  773. in that

  774. book,

  775. and it

  776. says that

  777. it's

  778. applying to

  779. Jesus

  780. Christ.

  781. These

  782. verses

  783. tell us

  784. that

  785. Jesus'

  786. days

  787. will

  788. never

  789. come to

  790. an end.

  791. In

  792. fact,

  793. they tell

  794. us that

  795. Jesus is

  796. the one

  797. who decides

  798. the days

  799. of all

  800. creation.

  801. these

  802. verses also

  803. foretold the

  804. resurrection of

  805. Jesus because

  806. his days

  807. would never

  808. come to

  809. an end.

  810. So,

  811. when he

  812. stays the

  813. end in

  814. order to

  815. take away

  816. our

  817. condemnation,

  818. he needs to

  819. be resurrected

  820. because otherwise

  821. his days

  822. would come to

  823. an end.

  824. So,

  825. he foretold

  826. us about

  827. his

  828. resurrection,

  829. and he

  830. was raised

  831. again to

  832. prove that

  833. he is a

  834. rightful king

  835. who will

  836. secure and

  837. establish his

  838. kingdom.

  839. Jesus was

  840. condemned so

  841. that those

  842. of us who

  843. are in

  844. Christ are

  845. no longer

  846. condemned.

  847. Jesus was

  848. afflicted.

  849. Does that

  850. mean that

  851. those of

  852. us who

  853. are in

  854. Christ will

  855. no longer

  856. be

  857. afflicted?

  858. I think

  859. there are

  860. two different

  861. issues here

  862. when we

  863. think about

  864. affliction.

  865. Jesus'

  866. affliction was

  867. for our

  868. justification.

  869. Our

  870. affliction is

  871. for our

  872. sanctification.

  873. Jesus was

  874. afflicted when

  875. he bore

  876. our

  877. condemnation.

  878. We,

  879. as Christians,

  880. are afflicted

  881. because we

  882. live in the

  883. world,

  884. and God

  885. is also

  886. changing us

  887. through

  888. affliction.

  889. So,

  890. in John 16,

  891. 33,

  892. Jesus told

  893. his disciples,

  894. in the

  895. world,

  896. you will

  897. have

  898. tubulation,

  899. but take

  900. heart,

  901. I have

  902. overcome

  903. the

  904. world.

  905. In

  906. Romans 8,

  907. 17,

  908. we are

  909. told that

  910. provided we

  911. suffer with

  912. Christ,

  913. in order

  914. that we

  915. might also

  916. be glorified

  917. with him.

  918. Whether we

  919. are Christians

  920. or not,

  921. suffering is

  922. part of

  923. life.

  924. The

  925. question is

  926. not if

  927. we can

  928. avoid

  929. suffering,

  930. the

  931. question is

  932. if we

  933. suffer with

  934. Christ or

  935. suffer without

  936. Christ.

  937. I have

  938. seen many

  939. patients

  940. suffering

  941. without

  942. Christ.

  943. They usually

  944. suffer not

  945. only physically

  946. but mentally

  947. as well.

  948. They become

  949. depressed and

  950. irritable.

  951. They are

  952. difficult to

  953. live with.

  954. They often

  955. complain to

  956. me how rude

  957. their families

  958. and friends

  959. were towards

  960. them.

  961. Suffering

  962. without

  963. Christ has

  964. changed them

  965. into someone

  966. who constantly

  967. craves for

  968. sympathy from

  969. others but

  970. who is unable

  971. to consider

  972. the need

  973. of others.

  974. Among

  975. my patients

  976. mostly are

  977. elderly and

  978. retired.

  979. I only have

  980. very few

  981. people who

  982. are working.

  983. But even

  984. among those

  985. very few

  986. working people,

  987. I've got

  988. four patients

  989. who have

  990. been in

  991. dispute

  992. with their

  993. workplaces

  994. for unfair

  995. treatment.

  996. They feel

  997. being discriminated,

  998. regulated,

  999. persecuted

  1000. by their

  1001. supervisors.

  1002. Cases

  1003. like this

  1004. are very

  1005. hard to

  1006. resolve

  1007. because the

  1008. employers

  1009. want to

  1010. side with

  1011. the

  1012. supervisors.

  1013. It's very

  1014. difficult to

  1015. resolve.

  1016. They want

  1017. justice.

  1018. They want

  1019. fairness.

  1020. One of the

  1021. patients

  1022. have been

  1023. in dispute

  1024. with her

  1025. employer

  1026. for about

  1027. five years.

  1028. She's not

  1029. been working

  1030. for five

  1031. years.

  1032. She just

  1033. wanted her

  1034. supervisor

  1035. to be

  1036. punished

  1037. by the

  1038. employer.

  1039. When she

  1040. saw me

  1041. recently,

  1042. she said

  1043. that particular

  1044. supervisor

  1045. has left

  1046. the company,

  1047. no longer

  1048. working there.

  1049. She was

  1050. at loss

  1051. as how

  1052. she could

  1053. be vindicated

  1054. now.

  1055. She's just

  1056. so depressed.

  1057. She could

  1058. not get

  1059. out of

  1060. that.

  1061. She wants

  1062. to be

  1063. vindicated,

  1064. but now

  1065. the person

  1066. is not

  1067. even there

  1068. in the

  1069. company

  1070. anymore.

  1071. What do

  1072. you do?

  1073. So she's

  1074. just become

  1075. her own

  1076. prisoner

  1077. in terms

  1078. of wanting

  1079. to get

  1080. justice

  1081. and

  1082. fairness.

  1083. And this

  1084. is the

  1085. mental

  1086. torment

  1087. that is

  1088. going

  1089. through.

  1090. So some

  1091. of us

  1092. here are

  1093. struggling

  1094. with

  1095. physical

  1096. afflictions.

  1097. I think

  1098. some of

  1099. us have

  1100. migraine

  1101. headaches

  1102. quite often,

  1103. arthritis

  1104. or other

  1105. disabilities.

  1106. Some of

  1107. us are

  1108. suffering

  1109. from mental

  1110. afflictions

  1111. or being

  1112. infertile

  1113. or being

  1114. lonely.

  1115. I think

  1116. the most

  1117. common

  1118. afflictions

  1119. are

  1120. relational

  1121. in terms

  1122. of how

  1123. we feel

  1124. that people

  1125. are treating

  1126. us.

  1127. Have you

  1128. ever been

  1129. misunderstood

  1130. and you

  1131. could not

  1132. explain

  1133. yourself?

  1134. Have you

  1135. ever been

  1136. falsely

  1137. accused

  1138. and you

  1139. could not

  1140. defend

  1141. yourself?

  1142. There are

  1143. times that

  1144. you might

  1145. wish those

  1146. who are

  1147. close to

  1148. you would

  1149. understand

  1150. your

  1151. aspirations

  1152. and actions

  1153. but they

  1154. keep giving

  1155. you negative

  1156. remarks.

  1157. The

  1158. afflictions

  1159. of being

  1160. bullied

  1161. or misunderstood

  1162. are difficult

  1163. to bear.

  1164. We appear

  1165. to many

  1166. venues

  1167. to vindicate

  1168. ourselves.

  1169. Sometimes

  1170. it's just

  1171. not possible

  1172. to get

  1173. justice.

  1174. It could

  1175. be that

  1176. our

  1177. opponent

  1178. is simply

  1179. too

  1180. powerful

  1181. or there

  1182. is not

  1183. enough

  1184. evidence

  1185. or we

  1186. cannot

  1187. fully

  1188. explain

  1189. ourselves.

  1190. Sometimes

  1191. when we

  1192. are in

  1193. an argument

  1194. with someone

  1195. we know

  1196. that we

  1197. will create

  1198. more

  1199. conflict

  1200. when we

  1201. try to

  1202. win

  1203. an argument

  1204. so we

  1205. buy our

  1206. tongues

  1207. and feel

  1208. the resentment

  1209. inside.

  1210. And if

  1211. you are a

  1212. leader in

  1213. any capacity

  1214. in the

  1215. church or

  1216. at home

  1217. you tend

  1218. to get a

  1219. lot more

  1220. criticism

  1221. when you

  1222. try to do

  1223. something

  1224. new.

  1225. And that's

  1226. life and

  1227. that's what

  1228. we will

  1229. go through.

  1230. So how

  1231. should we

  1232. cope with

  1233. all these

  1234. afflictions?

  1235. Firstly

  1236. we need to

  1237. examine our

  1238. hearts to

  1239. make sure

  1240. that we

  1241. are not

  1242. the ones

  1243. who are

  1244. afflicting

  1245. others.

  1246. So Paul

  1247. in 1

  1248. Corinthians 6

  1249. 7

  1250. 8 says

  1251. to have

  1252. lawsuits

  1253. at all

  1254. with one

  1255. another is

  1256. already a

  1257. defeat for

  1258. you.

  1259. Why not

  1260. rather suffer

  1261. wrong?

  1262. Why not

  1263. rather be

  1264. defrauded?

  1265. But you

  1266. yourself wrong

  1267. and defraud

  1268. even your

  1269. own brothers.

  1270. Paul was

  1271. dismayed that

  1272. the Corinthian

  1273. Christians were

  1274. not only not

  1275. willing to

  1276. suffer wrong,

  1277. they were

  1278. afflicting

  1279. others.

  1280. We are

  1281. called to

  1282. suffer with

  1283. Christ.

  1284. Secondly,

  1285. we trust that

  1286. God is always

  1287. in control

  1288. and he cares.

  1289. The writer of

  1290. Psalm 102

  1291. was suffering

  1292. alone and

  1293. his enemies

  1294. were making

  1295. fun of him.

  1296. His only

  1297. venue of

  1298. appeal was

  1299. to God.

  1300. God turned

  1301. his face

  1302. away from

  1303. the psalmist

  1304. because his

  1305. affliction

  1306. anticipates

  1307. the affliction

  1308. of Christ.

  1309. When we are

  1310. suffering with

  1311. Christ,

  1312. we know that

  1313. God will

  1314. never turn

  1315. his face

  1316. away from

  1317. us again.

  1318. Thirdly,

  1319. we suffer

  1320. with Christ.

  1321. What does

  1322. suffering with

  1323. Christ mean?

  1324. When Christ

  1325. suffered,

  1326. he did not

  1327. focus on

  1328. vindicating

  1329. himself.

  1330. He appealed

  1331. to God

  1332. and prayed

  1333. for the

  1334. restoration

  1335. of God's

  1336. kingdom.

  1337. He trusted

  1338. that God

  1339. is entorned

  1340. forever.

  1341. He knew

  1342. that nothing

  1343. would happen

  1344. outside God's

  1345. control.

  1346. He thought

  1347. of others

  1348. who were

  1349. suffering as

  1350. well.

  1351. He looked

  1352. forward to

  1353. a people

  1354. who would

  1355. be created

  1356. to praise

  1357. the Lord.

  1358. He longed

  1359. for the

  1360. gathering

  1361. of people

  1362. to worship

  1363. the Lord.

  1364. So that's

  1365. how Christ

  1366. suffered.

  1367. Fourthly,

  1368. we know

  1369. that our

  1370. affliction

  1371. is good

  1372. for our

  1373. sanctification.

  1374. 119,

  1375. verse 71,

  1376. it is good

  1377. for me

  1378. that I was

  1379. afflicted,

  1380. that I might

  1381. learn your

  1382. statutes.

  1383. Through

  1384. affliction,

  1385. God is

  1386. changing

  1387. us.

  1388. Affliction

  1389. helps us

  1390. to grow

  1391. in our

  1392. trust in

  1393. God and

  1394. His

  1395. promises.

  1396. Affliction

  1397. helps us

  1398. to learn

  1399. to forget

  1400. ourselves

  1401. and hope

  1402. in God's

  1403. kingdom.

  1404. Affliction

  1405. helps us

  1406. not to

  1407. love this

  1408. world and

  1409. long for

  1410. the city

  1411. that is

  1412. to come.

  1413. One of

  1414. the reasons

  1415. why the

  1416. church in

  1417. our generation

  1418. is so weak

  1419. is because

  1420. it focuses

  1421. too much

  1422. on our

  1423. individual

  1424. afflictions.

  1425. We spend

  1426. a lot of

  1427. resources to

  1428. vindicate

  1429. ourselves,

  1430. to keep

  1431. ourselves

  1432. comfortable

  1433. or to

  1434. collect

  1435. sympathy

  1436. from

  1437. other

  1438. people.

  1439. Paradoxically,

  1440. when we

  1441. learn to

  1442. suffer with

  1443. Christ,

  1444. we start

  1445. to care

  1446. for the

  1447. church of

  1448. Christ,

  1449. and our

  1450. own

  1451. afflictions

  1452. become

  1453. bearable.

  1454. More than

  1455. that,

  1456. as Romans 5

  1457. tells us,

  1458. we rejoice

  1459. in our

  1460. suffering.

  1461. The writer

  1462. of Psalm 102

  1463. knows that

  1464. unless Zion

  1465. is restored,

  1466. his own

  1467. affliction

  1468. could not

  1469. be resolved.

  1470. When we

  1471. are afflicted,

  1472. we can

  1473. pray Psalm 102.

  1474. We know

  1475. that God

  1476. will hear

  1477. our prayer

  1478. because of

  1479. the blood

  1480. of Jesus.

  1481. God may

  1482. not remove

  1483. the

  1484. afflictions,

  1485. but he

  1486. will give

  1487. us peace

  1488. that will

  1489. guard our

  1490. hearts and

  1491. our minds

  1492. in Christ

  1493. Jesus.

  1494. We do

  1495. not suffer

  1496. alone because

  1497. Jesus has

  1498. suffered

  1499. alone,

  1500. and Jesus

  1501. is now

  1502. with us

  1503. until the

  1504. end of

  1505. the age.

  1506. our days

  1507. on earth

  1508. may be

  1509. cut short,

  1510. but we

  1511. know that

  1512. we are

  1513. secure in

  1514. Christ and

  1515. we will

  1516. never perish.

  1517. With such

  1518. an assurance,

  1519. we can

  1520. turn the

  1521. focus of

  1522. our

  1523. afflictions to

  1524. greater

  1525. things.

  1526. We might

  1527. then pray

  1528. that God's

  1529. church may

  1530. be established.

  1531. We might

  1532. pray for the

  1533. destitute and

  1534. those who are

  1535. suffering,

  1536. and we

  1537. might ask

  1538. God's kingdom

  1539. to come.

  1540. I will

  1541. end with

  1542. Hebrews 11

    Hebrews 11:24–26

  1543. verses 24

  1544. to 26.

  1545. By faith,

  1546. Moses,

  1547. when he was

  1548. grown up,

  1549. refused to

  1550. be called

  1551. the son of

  1552. Pharaoh's

  1553. daughter,

  1554. chosen rather

  1555. to be mistreated

  1556. with the

  1557. people of

  1558. God than

  1559. to enjoy

  1560. the fleeting

  1561. pleasures of

  1562. sin.

  1563. He

  1564. considered the

  1565. reproach of

  1566. Christ greater

  1567. wealth than

  1568. the treasure

  1569. of Egypt,

  1570. for he was

  1571. looking to

  1572. the reward.

  1573. Moses had

  1574. the opportunity

  1575. to live an

  1576. affliction-free

  1577. life.

  1578. He gave it

  1579. up because

  1580. he was

  1581. looking for

  1582. something much

  1583. greater than

  1584. the feeding

  1585. pleasures of

  1586. this world.

  1587. He chose to

  1588. suffer with

  1589. Christ in

  1590. order that he

  1591. might be

  1592. glorified with

  1593. him.

  1594. Let us

  1595. pray.

  1596. O Father

  1597. God,

  1598. we want

  1599. to look

  1600. to our

  1601. Lord Jesus

  1602. Christ,

  1603. the founder

  1604. and perfecter

  1605. of our

  1606. faith,

  1607. who for

  1608. the joy

  1609. that is

  1610. set before

  1611. him,

  1612. enjoy the

  1613. cross,

  1614. despising the

  1615. shame.

  1616. O Father,

  1617. help us

  1618. to live

  1619. for the

  1620. Lord Jesus

  1621. Christ,

  1622. to live

  1623. for something

  1624. greater,

  1625. and help

  1626. us to

  1627. turn our

  1628. afflictions

  1629. to your

  1630. glory and

  1631. honour.

  1632. Thank you,

  1633. Lord.

  1634. We pray in

  1635. Jesus' name.

  1636. Amen.
