  1. Now one of the truisms, that is things that people say about Christians, or perhaps if we're a Christian, one of the cliches we use as a Christian is that the Bible is central to everything we do and are as Christians and as a church.

  2. It's been a truism for years.

  3. But I want to start off by saying this morning that I actually think it's no longer true.

  4. The truism is still used, but it's no longer true.

  5. In recent months, the now infamous Israel Folau tweet of two verses from 1 Corinthians chapter 6, actually verses from Scripture, exposed such a massive and vicious division among evangelical Christians,

    1 Corinthians 6 chapter mention

  6. mainline Christians, as to how to use the Bible and the place of the Bible in public life.

  7. And underneath that, there's a lot of questions about how confident we are in the Bible, how embarrassed we are by the Bible,

  8. how fearful we are of offending others by our use of the Bible.

  9. Then this week, news has broken of Josh Harris.

  10. Many of you will have read his book, I Kissed Dating Goodbye.

  11. A very, very high-profile, conservative, evangelical Christian.

  12. And it's now come out that he has decided to walk away from God and the Bible entirely.

  13. His book sold more than a million copies.

  14. In many ways, he was a pin-up boy of lots of evangelical churches over the last 10, 15 years.

  15. Harris was caught in a dilemma.

  16. He's lost confidence in the truth and relevance of God's Word for today's world.

  17. And he says this, he says it's intellectually easier to reject God completely

  18. than it is for him to try and justify modern views on sex, sexuality, gender, and parenting from within the Bible.

  19. That's a massive statement, isn't it?

  20. In an interview with a liberal, progressive Christian magazine,

  21. which believes, which actually believes, the Bible can easily accommodate

  22. all practices of the modern sexual revolution.

  23. All right, hear that again.

  24. This is an interview with a so-called progressive, liberal Christian magazine,

  25. which believes, the Bible can accommodate all practices of the modern sexual revolution.

  26. Harris said this,

  27. if in one generation,

  28. Christians can make such a radical shift with the Bible,

  29. it starts to become silly putty

  30. that is made to say anything.

  31. You know what putty is?

  32. Play-Doh type stuff?

  33. You just shape it.

  34. If you want a new nose in your face,

  35. you just make yourself a new nose.

  36. Harris is saying it's actually intellectually

  37. easier for him to walk away from God and Christianity altogether

  38. than it is to take the Bible

  39. and try and make it say all the things our society want to make it say

  40. about sex and sexuality and gender and parenting

  41. and all those other things.

  42. He was in a dilemma.

  43. Didn't quite want to stand with the Bible,

  44. but nor was he able just to make the Bible be what he wanted it to be either.

  45. So we come up with a third solution

  46. that some will pillory him for

  47. and others will applaud him for.

  48. Either way,

  49. we have to wrestle

  50. with the same issue

  51. individually

  52. and as a church.

  53. So here's a question for this morning.

  54. When you evaluate your church,

  55. and if you're a local here,

  56. as most of you are,

  57. when you evaluate this church,

  58. what do you,

  59. in your mind,

  60. think should be foundational

  61. to us as a church?

  62. What's the non-negotiable?

  63. What do you think should shape us

  64. in all the parts

  65. that make up the whole

  66. of our church family life?

  67. Or again,

  68. if a visitor coming in here this morning

  69. were to ask you,

  70. what is the key ingredient

  71. that defines

  72. us as a church family?

  73. What would you say?

  74. Or if they said,

  75. what is our aim?

  76. We talk about wanting to engage

  77. with our local community.

  78. Well,

  79. what is our aim

  80. in wanting to engage

  81. with the local community?

  82. Would you say

  83. that the key ingredient

  84. that shapes and defines us

  85. as a church

  86. is the Bible?

  87. That it's central

  88. to everything we are

  89. and everything we do.

  90. Would you say

  91. the Bible

  92. is the only really valuable thing

  93. we have to offer

  94. our community?

  95. Because

  96. it offers

  97. the pathway

  98. to the truly

  99. godly life

  100. that everybody

  101. out there

  102. craves

  103. but is desperately

  104. seeking in places

  105. other than God.

  106. and then

  107. if you did say that

  108. would you actually

  109. be practically

  110. committed to it?

  111. See,

  112. we live in an age,

  113. a digital age we're told,

  114. the age of digital knowledge.

  115. Vast amounts

  116. of information

  117. available through

  118. modern technology.

  119. And as I said

  120. last week

  121. in our Grace Life thing,

  122. the reality

  123. for so many Christians

  124. I'm not just talking

  125. about non-Christians,

  126. I'm talking about

  127. Christians as well here.

  128. The reality

  129. for so many Christians

  130. is that their first

  131. point of authority,

  132. reference and guidance,

  133. is so often

  134. the internet.

  135. I think it's not

  136. too much to say

  137. that many Christians

  138. doubt

  139. that

  140. what is taught

  141. in the Bible

  142. is even

  143. worth reading,

  144. let alone

  145. learning

  146. when compared

  147. to the immediacy

  148. and ease

  149. of a Google search.

  150. Now,

  151. the result of this

  152. is quite subtle

  153. because

  154. the result of this

  155. sort of

  156. view of the Bible

  157. is not that God's

  158. outright denied,

  159. I don't hear

  160. Christians doing that,

  161. but that God

  162. is actually

  163. just considered

  164. irrelevant.

  165. He's not the

  166. go-to person

  167. for our knowledge,

  168. for our guidance,

  169. for our authority.

  170. He's practically

  171. irrelevant.

  172. So,

  173. a couple of questions

  174. this morning

  175. as we move through

  176. this topic

  177. and open it up

  178. to look at it

  179. then over four weeks

  180. in the afternoons.

  181. What is the Bible?

  182. What should we

  183. believe about the Bible

  184. and what do we

  185. actually believe

  186. about the Bible?

  187. That's two good

  188. questions to ask

  189. yourself.

  190. Well,

  191. of course,

  192. the Bible's

  193. many things.

  194. We can say

  195. the Bible's

  196. a library

  197. of books

  198. in one book

  199. written by

  200. many different

  201. people

  202. over a period

  203. of about

  204. 1400 years,

  205. full of words,

  206. each of which

  207. is meant

  208. to convey

  209. a particular

  210. meaning

  211. and all of

  212. which together

  213. are designed

  214. to convey

  215. a particular

  216. narrative,

  217. a particular

  218. story.

  219. Then we can say,

  220. well,

  221. the Bible's

  222. a really old

  223. book.

  224. It's a best

  225. selling book

  226. still.

  227. It's been

  228. translated into

  229. hundreds of

  230. languages.

  231. Well,

  232. that's true

  233. about the Bible.

  234. Yet,

  235. again,

  236. we have to

  237. say unbounds

  238. that it

  239. remains a

  240. very

  241. neglected

  242. book.

  243. Christians,

  244. churches,

  245. who say

  246. the Bible

  247. is their

  248. book,

  249. often have

  250. very little

  251. knowledge of

  252. what it

  253. says.

  254. Even

  255. reject much

  256. of its

  257. contents,

  258. if they

  259. bother to

  260. read it

  261. at all.

  262. The word

  263. Bible

  264. simply comes

  265. from the

  266. Greek word

  267. for book.

  268. That's what

  269. it is.

  270. It's

  271. Biblos,

  272. book,

  273. Bible.

  274. But our

  275. Bible is

  276. more than

  277. just an

  278. ordinary

  279. book that

  280. happens to

  281. be about

  282. God.

  283. Bible,

  284. the Bible

  285. claims to

  286. be

  287. scripture.

  288. Scriptura,

  289. that word

  290. means the

  291. writing of

  292. God

  293. himself.

  294. The

  295. scripture,

  296. the Bible

  297. claims to

  298. be the

  299. written

  300. record of

  301. what God

  302. has said

  303. to his

  304. world and

  305. his people

  306. in the

  307. Old

  308. Testament and

  309. the New

  310. Testament

  311. periods.

  312. Well,

  313. if that's

  314. what the

  315. Bible is,

  316. why did

  317. God need

  318. to speak?

  319. If he

  320. speaks in

  321. the Bible,

  322. speaks through

  323. the Bible,

  324. why did

  325. he need

  326. to speak?

  327. The answer

  328. is simple,

  329. as Dave

  330. introduced

  331. this morning.

  332. It goes

  333. like this.

  334. It's a

  335. since then

  336. argument.

  337. Since

  338. God fills

  339. our universe,

  340. as Rob

  341. talked about

  342. last week,

  343. in his

  344. character,

  345. in his

  346. presence,

  347. in his

  348. creative

  349. ability,

  350. since God

  351. fills our

  352. universe,

  353. and since

  354. he is so

  355. different to

  356. what we

  357. are,

  358. even though

  359. we are

  360. his creation,

  361. his created

  362. beings,

  363. and even

  364. though we're

  365. made in

  366. his image,

  367. he's still

  368. so different

  369. from us,

  370. so other

  371. than.

  372. And since

  373. his desire

  374. is to relate

  375. to us

  376. personally,

  377. then we

  378. actually need

  379. God to

  380. tell us

  381. what he's

  382. like.

  383. because

  384. unless God

  385. takes the

  386. initiative to

  387. tell us

  388. what it's

  389. like,

  390. to tell us

  391. what's in

  392. his mind,

  393. to tell us

  394. what his

  395. purpose is,

  396. we could

  397. never,

  398. ever know.

  399. Now,

  400. God didn't

  401. need to

  402. reveal himself

  403. to us,

  404. but in an

  405. act of

  406. mercy,

  407. and kindness,

  408. and grace,

  409. he has done

  410. so in

  411. great detail

  412. by speaking

  413. into his

  414. world,

  415. in his

  416. word.

  417. Now,

  418. as you

  419. know,

  420. words are

  421. essential to

  422. building

  423. relationship,

  424. good

  425. relationship,

  426. deep

  427. relationship,

  428. that is.

  429. Now,

  430. there's a

  431. certain amount

  432. you can learn

  433. about a person

  434. just by

  435. observing them,

  436. so if I

  437. brought a

  438. stranger in

  439. the midst

  440. this morning

  441. and stood

  442. them up

  443. here,

  444. there's a

  445. certain amount

  446. of things

  447. you could

  448. learn about

  449. them,

  450. or at least

  451. guess about

  452. them,

  453. by simply

  454. observing

  455. them,

  456. or we

  457. can learn

  458. more about

  459. somebody by

  460. observing what

  461. they do

  462. in certain

  463. circumstances,

  464. but to

  465. get to know

  466. them deeply,

  467. to understand

  468. their character,

  469. to build that

  470. sort of

  471. relationship,

  472. then we

  473. need to

  474. speak,

  475. we need to

  476. communicate

  477. with a

  478. person,

  479. and that's

  480. exactly what

  481. God's word

  482. is.

  483. God's word

  484. bridges the

  485. gulf, the

  486. great gulf

  487. between the

  488. otherness of

  489. God and his

  490. character and

  491. our finiteness,

  492. and it

  493. allows us to

  494. know him

  495. personally.

  496. So revelation

  497. then, my

  498. friends, which

  499. is what we

  500. call the

  501. Bible,

  502. revelation is

  503. God expressing

  504. himself.

  505. God's

  506. expression of

  507. himself.

  508. Now that

  509. expression comes

  510. both in the

  511. words that

  512. describe his

  513. greatness and

  514. his beauty and

  515. his desirability,

  516. the words we

  517. like, but

  518. also it's an

  519. expression of

  520. himself as he

  521. describes his

  522. holiness and his

  523. justness and the

  524. awesomeness of

  525. him in

  526. judgment, the

  527. words we tend

  528. not to like.

  529. Both are an

  530. expression of

  531. God's character.

  532. Both need to be

  533. heard equally.

  534. They tell us

  535. precisely why he

  536. does what he does

  537. in his world so we

  538. can understand his

  539. character and purpose

  540. and be in

  541. relationship with

  542. him.

  543. So the Bible

  544. bridges the

  545. gulf, but the

  546. Bible also links

  547. the past to

  548. the present.

  549. It records

  550. God's purposes

  551. and intentions

  552. as experienced

  553. in history.

  554. This is what

  555. this is.

  556. It's the record of

  557. God's purpose and

  558. intention as it's

  559. been experienced

  560. in history.

  561. And so it

  562. becomes for us

  563. then in 2019

  564. the template

  565. by which we

  566. also now in

  567. our turn can

  568. encounter God

  569. and come into

  570. relationship with

  571. him in our own

  572. right, in our

  573. own time and

  574. space.

  575. Now, let me

  576. just say this.

  577. Revelation does

  578. not mean that

  579. the only knowledge

  580. we have in our

  581. world comes from

  582. the Bible.

  583. In fact, the

  584. Bible is actually

  585. very clear that

  586. rebellious humans

  587. may reject God

  588. totally and still

  589. know and discover

  590. lots of amazing

  591. things about our

  592. world and how it

  593. operates.

  594. The Bible itself

  595. teaches that.

  596. Chemistry,

  597. physics,

  598. biology,

  599. geology,

  600. psychology,

  601. medicine,

  602. all those other

  603. things, they all

  604. have a part to play

  605. in our world of

  606. discovering it and

  607. directing it.

  608. They help us

  609. know our world.

  610. But the Bible is

  611. also really clear

  612. that knowledge of

  613. which we have

  614. much is not

  615. wisdom.

  616. wisdom.

  617. And the Bible

  618. distinguishes the

  619. two because

  620. wisdom is the

  621. ability to take

  622. that knowledge

  623. and put it into

  624. the big picture

  625. narrative

  626. and discover a

  627. true understanding

  628. of life and a

  629. true understanding

  630. of how we live

  631. the good life

  632. and how we fit in

  633. the universe.

  634. And the Bible

  635. is clear,

  636. therefore,

  637. that not

  638. withstanding the

  639. knowledge we can

  640. discover quite

  641. apart from God,

  642. that we can only

  643. know our universe

  644. in its fullest

  645. and truest

  646. context as we

  647. bring that

  648. knowledge and put

  649. it in the context

  650. of God who

  651. created all.

  652. this ultimate

  653. wisdom,

  654. says the Bible,

  655. is God's

  656. alone.

  657. And this

  658. wisdom,

  659. he generously

  660. shares with us

  661. in his written

  662. word so that

  663. we might know

  664. how to use our

  665. vast and

  666. increasing

  667. knowledge

  668. wisely

  669. and know

  670. how to live

  671. well.

  672. Now,

  673. that's a really

  674. big check for us,

  675. isn't it?

  676. Because for

  677. generations,

  678. we've actually

  679. been told,

  680. we've been

  681. sold the line

  682. that humans

  683. can find

  684. ultimate truth

  685. and wisdom

  686. for living

  687. without need

  688. for God.

  689. But I don't

  690. need to argue

  691. the point that

  692. the hard evidence

  693. for that

  694. proves the

  695. Bible's point

  696. that there's

  697. an awful lot

  698. of knowledge

  699. out there

  700. in our

  701. world,

  702. but very

  703. little wisdom

  704. as to how

  705. to live

  706. well.

  707. So,

  708. next question

  709. then.

  710. What is the

  711. Bible?

  712. Why did God

  713. need to speak?

  714. The question

  715. then is,

  716. how has God

  717. spoken to us?

  718. Now,

  719. we look at

  720. 2 Timothy 3,

  721. 16.

  722. It says

  723. there,

  724. all Scripture

  725. is breathed

  726. out.

  727. by God.

  728. My friends,

  729. the Bible

  730. is God's

  731. words

  732. in human

  733. words.

  734. All Scripture

  735. comes directly

  736. from God

  737. as he breathes

  738. out,

  739. as he speaks.

  740. What the Bible

  741. says,

  742. God says

  743. just as

  744. really

  745. as if

  746. God himself

  747. was standing

  748. here in front

  749. of us

  750. this morning

  751. speaking.

  752. That's what

  753. the Bible

  754. claims about

  755. itself.

  756. All Scripture

  757. is God

  758. breathed.

  759. The same

  760. idea is

  761. in

  762. Hebrews

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  763. chapter 1.

  764. Let me

  765. just read it

  766. to you

  767. when I

  768. find it.

  769. Hebrews

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  770. chapter 1.

  771. Long

  772. ago,

  773. at many

  774. times and

  775. in many

  776. ways,

  777. God spoke

  778. to our

  779. fathers by

  780. the prophets.

  781. prophets.

  782. But in

  783. these last

  784. days,

  785. he has

  786. spoken to

  787. us by

  788. his son,

  789. whom he

  790. appointed the

  791. heir of all

  792. things,

  793. through whom

  794. he also

  795. created the

  796. world.

  797. How has

  798. God spoken?

  799. Well,

  800. God communicated

  801. with ordinary

  802. people

  803. through

  804. ordinary

  805. words

  806. in

  807. language

  808. which is

  809. ordinary,

  810. propositions.

  811. That is,

  812. sentences,

  813. statements,

  814. questions,

  815. commands.

  816. So,

  817. in one

  818. sense,

  819. God has

  820. spoken in a

  821. really ordinary

  822. way.

  823. Yet,

  824. the process

  825. was also

  826. supernatural,

  827. too.

  828. The word

  829. breathed,

  830. in Greek,

  831. contains the

  832. root word for

  833. Holy Spirit,

  834. theonistus.

  835. God

  836. communicates

  837. his wisdom

  838. to the

  839. mind of

  840. ordinary

  841. people by

  842. his Holy

  843. Spirit,

  844. whom he

  845. superintends.

  846. And he

  847. superintends

  848. both the

  849. recording of

  850. that word

  851. initially

  852. that God

  853. puts in

  854. their mind,

  855. God's

  856. word.

  857. He

  858. superintends

  859. that,

  860. and also

  861. superintends

  862. the process

  863. of passing

  864. it on to

  865. others

  866. through

  867. teaching,

  868. which is

  869. why we

  870. have God's

  871. word in

  872. its original

  873. form come

  874. down to

  875. us with

  876. accuracy

  877. and

  878. completeness

  879. in 2019,

  880. 2,000 years

  881. after it's

  882. written,

  883. 3,000 years

  884. after someone

  885. that's

  886. written.

  887. So God

  888. superintends

  889. the process

  890. from start

  891. to finish,

  892. and yet

  893. we got his

  894. slide back

  895. and forward.

  896. It's an

  897. ordinary

  898. process because

  899. God didn't

  900. reduce the

  901. writers to

  902. robot status.

  903. He didn't

  904. put them

  905. into a

  906. trance.

  907. We can

  908. see the

  909. different

  910. personalities,

  911. the different

  912. contexts,

  913. the different

  914. styles of

  915. the different

  916. Bible writers,

  917. writers,

  918. and yet

  919. we're told

  920. that God

  921. superintends

  922. both the

  923. original writing,

  924. the original

  925. thinking,

  926. and then the

  927. transmission of

  928. it.

  929. But equally

  930. clear in 2

  931. Timothy 3,

  932. 15 and 16

  933. is the

  934. Bible is

  935. God's

  936. living and

  937. transforming

  938. word.

  939. My friends,

  940. the Bible,

  941. whatever else

  942. you say about

  943. it,

  944. is the

  945. God's

  946. way of

  947. bringing

  948. life to

  949. people,

  950. to his

  951. people,

  952. and to

  953. growing his

  954. people,

  955. to be the

  956. people he

  957. wants them

  958. to be.

  959. Though

  960. written in

  961. the past,

  962. it is

  963. equally

  964. applicable to

  965. us now.

  966. Look at the

  967. way the

  968. tenses change

  969. in verse

  970. 15.

  971. I, from

  972. childhood,

  973. you have

  974. acquainted

  975. with the

  976. sacred

  977. writings,

  978. which are

  979. able.

  980. So,

  981. Timothy,

  982. you've

  983. learned

  984. these

  985. in the

  986. past.

  987. They've

  988. come

  989. down

  990. through

  991. the

  992. generations,

  993. which are

  994. able,

  995. that is a

  996. present tense,

  997. which are

  998. able to

  999. make you

  1000. wise for

  1001. salvation

  1002. through

  1003. faith in

  1004. Christ Jesus.

  1005. All

  1006. scripture is

  1007. breathed out

  1008. by God

  1009. and is

  1010. profitable

  1011. for teaching,

  1012. for reproof,

  1013. for correction,

  1014. and for

  1015. training and

  1016. righteous,

  1017. that the

  1018. man of God,

  1019. that the

  1020. person of

  1021. God,

  1022. that the

  1023. believer,

  1024. may be

  1025. competent,

  1026. equipped for

  1027. every good

  1028. work.

  1029. God's

  1030. word brings

  1031. life.

  1032. It is able

  1033. to make us

  1034. wise for

  1035. salvation.

  1036. It is

  1037. useful now

  1038. for growing us

  1039. into his

  1040. likeness.

  1041. God's

  1042. word is

  1043. how God

  1044. makes his

  1045. people and

  1046. grows his

  1047. people.

  1048. Put it in

  1049. Timothy's

  1050. context.

  1051. Timothy's

  1052. work was

  1053. of teaching

  1054. the gospel

  1055. and building

  1056. the church.

  1057. It was a

  1058. cultural

  1059. context like

  1060. our own.

  1061. You see

  1062. that in the

  1063. beginning of

  1064. chapter 3 and

  1065. then the

  1066. beginning of

  1067. chapter 4.

  1068. A cultural

  1069. context we

  1070. recognize.

  1071. People were

  1072. chasing the

  1073. good life.

  1074. How?

  1075. Through their

  1076. own wisdom

  1077. and apart

  1078. from God.

  1079. verse 8.

  1080. They were

  1081. making a

  1082. mess of

  1083. it.

  1084. Look at

  1085. the way

  1086. it is

  1087. described in

  1088. there.

  1089. It is

  1090. relationships

  1091. gone viral

  1092. in the

  1093. sense of

  1094. gone bad

  1095. that is.

  1096. Verse 8.

  1097. Men who

  1098. oppose the

  1099. truth, men

  1100. corrupted in

  1101. mind and

  1102. disqualified

  1103. regarding the

  1104. faith.

  1105. Sorry,

  1106. verse 7

  1107. rather.

  1108. Always

  1109. learning and

  1110. never able to

  1111. arrive at

  1112. knowledge of

  1113. the truth.

  1114. See, people

  1115. chase the

  1116. good life

  1117. under their

  1118. own wisdom.

  1119. They chase

  1120. knowledge.

  1121. They are all

  1122. the time

  1123. learning about

  1124. this so-called

  1125. good life but

  1126. they can never

  1127. quite get it.

  1128. They can never

  1129. get it onto

  1130. the ground.

  1131. They can never

  1132. make it real.

  1133. They can never

  1134. discover truth

  1135. to actually

  1136. free them

  1137. into the

  1138. life they

  1139. crave.

  1140. So what

  1141. Paul's

  1142. encouragement to

  1143. Timothy writes

  1144. this young

  1145. preacher?

  1146. What's the

  1147. tool he gives

  1148. Timothy for

  1149. changing lives

  1150. and hearts

  1151. filled with

  1152. their own

  1153. foolishness and

  1154. determined to

  1155. pursue their

  1156. own foolishness?

  1157. Chapter 4,

  1158. verse 2.

  1159. Preach the

  1160. word.

  1161. The living,

  1162. transforming word

  1163. of God.

  1164. That's your

  1165. tool,

  1166. Timothy.

  1167. That's why you

  1168. can be

  1169. encouraged in

  1170. a cultural

  1171. context where

  1172. people are

  1173. totally committed

  1174. to their own

  1175. foolishness and

  1176. don't even

  1177. realize how

  1178. foolish their

  1179. foolishness is.

  1180. preach the

  1181. word.

  1182. That's your

  1183. tool for

  1184. changing lives

  1185. and hearts.

  1186. Both the

  1187. Old Testament

  1188. scripture he had

  1189. learned as a

  1190. child and the

  1191. New Testament

  1192. scripture coming

  1193. to him through

  1194. Paul and other

  1195. apostolic writers.

  1196. Friends, our

  1197. Bible is a

  1198. unique book because

  1199. it comes directly

  1200. from the mind

  1201. of God.

  1202. It is God's

  1203. wisdom to

  1204. his world.

  1205. Now, again,

  1206. the Bible never

  1207. claims that it

  1208. says everything

  1209. there is to say

  1210. about God.

  1211. It never claims

  1212. that at all.

  1213. But it does

  1214. tell us that in

  1215. the Bible we

  1216. have God's

  1217. word which is

  1218. everything we

  1219. need to free

  1220. us from

  1221. emptiness, from

  1222. empty living,

  1223. and to make us

  1224. God's people and

  1225. to grow us into

  1226. Christ's likeness.

  1227. everything we

  1228. need.

  1229. And even more

  1230. directly, going

  1231. back to the

  1232. Hebrews 1

  1233. quotation, we

  1234. have all of

  1235. that personified

  1236. in the person

  1237. of Jesus.

  1238. John 1, 1-4,

  1239. the word became

  1240. flesh.

  1241. God's living,

  1242. breathing word

  1243. came to us

  1244. for what

  1245. purpose?

  1246. To bring

  1247. life, to

  1248. move us from

  1249. darkness and

  1250. death to

  1251. relationship with

  1252. him and

  1253. life.

  1254. God's written

  1255. word makes us

  1256. wise to salvation

  1257. by pointing us

  1258. to Christ, who

  1259. himself come into

  1260. the world to

  1261. complete God's

  1262. purpose and

  1263. actually deliver us

  1264. into the good

  1265. life he wants

  1266. for us, the

  1267. good life we

  1268. crave.

  1269. And God's

  1270. spirit grows

  1271. us in our

  1272. new life in

  1273. Christ.

  1274. God's spirit

  1275. renews our

  1276. mind and our

  1277. hearts from the

  1278. inside out so

  1279. that we not

  1280. only recognize

  1281. this new life

  1282. in Christ, but

  1283. we desire it.

  1284. And we see

  1285. ourselves being

  1286. equipped by

  1287. God's spirit as

  1288. we understand

  1289. more and more

  1290. how God wants

  1291. us to live and

1292. what it is to be

  1293. true image

  1294. bearers.

  1295. To

  1296. Timothy 3.16,

  1297. to become

  1298. competent,

  1299. well equipped,

  1300. highly functioning

  1301. servants of God

  1302. who look like

  1303. him, who

  1304. sound like him,

  1305. and who act

  1306. like him, and

  1307. ultimately who

  1308. have hearts like

  1309. him.

  1310. Now, let me

  1311. finish up

  1312. reasonably

  1313. quickly.

  1314. I'm running

  1315. out of time

  1316. here, so I'll

  1317. rush over these

  1318. things.

  1319. We can talk

  1320. about them more

  1321. this afternoon.

  1322. Given that the

  1323. Bible is such a

  1324. gift, given it

  1325. is so powerful

  1326. for bringing

  1327. life, especially

  1328. to us as

  1329. Christians, what

  1330. stops us from

  1331. making it central

  1332. in our lives and

  1333. in our church?

  1334. I've got three

  1335. things here I'm

  1336. just going to run

  1337. over real quick.

  1338. The first is, I

  1339. think, that the

  1340. God of our

  1341. Bible is too

  1342. small.

  1343. Rob spoke last

  1344. week about the

  1345. character of God.

  1346. He's so profound.

  1347. He's so other

  1348. than us.

  1349. When we forget

  1350. that the Bible is

  1351. God's unique

  1352. communication,

  1353. to us, or

  1354. when we have a

  1355. small view of

  1356. God, then

  1357. what happens is

  1358. that we easily

  1359. get into the

  1360. position where we

  1361. stand over God's

  1362. word, the Bible,

  1363. just like arrogant

  1364. teenagers who

  1365. will roll their

  1366. eyes when mom and

  1367. dad give them

  1368. wisdom and

  1369. treat it as the

  1370. most idiotic thing

  1371. has ever been

  1372. pronounced in God's

  1373. world.

  1374. words, and I

  1375. speak there as

  1376. remembering my own

  1377. teenage years.

  1378. What happens?

  1379. Well, we take that

  1380. attitude with God.

1381. We get too small a

  1382. view of God.

  1383. The problem is not

  1384. the clarity of God's

  1385. word.

  1386. It's my arrogance,

  1387. thinking that I know

  1388. better, or I don't

  1389. like that, so it's

1390. got to be over here,

  1391. or I don't understand

  1392. that, so therefore I

  1393. won't believe that.

  1394. It can't be true.

  1395. The Bible's always

  1396. saying to us, believe,

  1397. and understanding

  1398. will come.

  1399. Believe.

  1400. Why?

  1401. Believe, because it's

  1402. God's word.

  1403. And how dare we

  1404. reject God's word

  1405. and throw it back

  1406. on us then, well

  1407. actually God, I'm

  1408. pretty sure you made

  1409. a mistake here.

  1410. Had you been

  1411. thinking clearly, you

  1412. wouldn't have said

  1413. this.

  1414. God must always

  1415. evaluate me.

  1416. And my culture

  1417. must never be the

  1418. other way around.

  1419. And yet I fear

  1420. that's what it's

  1421. become for us as

  1422. Christians.

  1423. Secondly, we think

  1424. the Bible is not

  1425. relevant or not

  1426. sufficient for the

  1427. problems we face.

  1428. And the argument

  1429. goes like this.

  1430. Well look, the fact

  1431. of the matter is

  1432. that we face

  1433. problems on a daily

  1434. basis that people

  1435. 50 years ago

  1436. couldn't imagine,

  1437. let alone people

  1438. 2,000 years ago.

  1439. So therefore, how

  1440. could the Bible

  1441. possibly be

  1442. sufficient for

  1443. every aspect of

  1444. life and practice?

  1445. We tend to think

  1446. therefore the Bible

  1447. has nothing to say

  1448. on these modern

  1449. issues.

1450. And so then, if the

  1451. Bible's got nothing

  1452. to say, the Bible's

  1453. not our authority,

  1454. then where will we

  1455. turn?

  1456. We need help with

  1457. these issues.

1458. And so we turn to

  1459. Google.

  1460. We turn to our

  1461. peers.

  1462. Or if we're older,

  1463. we perhaps just fall

  1464. back on comfortable

  1465. tradition.

  1466. But the problem

  1467. here, you see, is

  1468. that we've

  1469. sacrificed wisdom

  1470. for knowledge.

  1471. Paul didn't need

  1472. to, well, sorry,

  1473. Paul didn't have to

  1474. negotiate the

  1475. internet or social

  1476. media.

  1477. He didn't have to

  1478. decide what sort of

  1479. car to buy.

  1480. But he was a

  1481. student of human

  1482. nature.

  1483. And he knew only

  1484. too well how we

  1485. naturally tend to

  1486. take the good

  1487. things that God

  1488. gives us in his

  1489. world and fill our

  1490. lives with those

  1491. things and

  1492. exclude God, the

  1493. giver of them.

  1494. He knows how

  1495. these, that sort of

  1496. thinking then,

  1497. becomes an idol,

  1498. how these things

  1499. become equally or

  1500. more important to

  1501. us than God.

  1502. And he knows the

  1503. consequences of

  1504. this idol worship

  1505. when we are

  1506. created to be

  1507. worshippers of

  1508. God.

  1509. It brings

  1510. disaster.

  1511. He didn't need

  1512. to know the

  1513. workings of

  1514. the internet to

  1515. be able to

  1516. speak wisely

  1517. into our lives

  1518. as to the

  1519. dangers of the

  1520. internet and a

  1521. million other

  1522. things beside the

  1523. internet.

  1524. We think that

  1525. because the

  1526. Bible doesn't

  1527. mention the

  1528. internet by

  1529. name, therefore

  1530. the Bible has

  1531. nothing to say

  1532. in respect of

  1533. how we approach

  1534. these things.

  1535. We've got a

  1536. wrong idea of

  1537. the Bible.

  1538. And Paul not

  1539. only knew how

  1540. to analyze his

  1541. society and his

  1542. culture and his

  1543. own heart, he

  1544. knew where to

  1545. look for truth.

  1546. He knew the

  1547. heart was looking

  1548. for freedom,

  1549. freedom from the

  1550. emptiness of ways

  1551. handed down by

  1552. the forefathers,

  1553. and he knew

  1554. where to go to

  1555. look for that

  1556. truth.

  1557. My friends, the

  1558. Bible still speaks

  1559. the same to us

  1560. today because the

  1561. names change, the

  1562. faces change, the

  1563. issues apparently

  1564. change, but in a

  1565. sense there's no

  1566. change.

  1567. And finally, we've

  1568. got a mechanical

  1569. view of the

  1570. Bible.

  1571. Now this is

  1572. probably the one

  1573. that will get

  1574. most people upset

  1575. if anything gets

  1576. you upset, but I

  1577. don't mind getting

  1578. you upset, at

  1579. least you're

  1580. thinking then.

  1581. Just don't take

  1582. it out of me,

  1583. that's all.

  1584. We have a

  1585. mechanical view of

  1586. the Bible.

  1587. Now what I mean

  1588. by that is that

  1589. sometimes Christians

  1590. get into the

  1591. mode of thinking

  1592. that simply reading

  1593. the Bible or

  1594. learning sections

  1595. of the Bible by

  1596. rote is the

  1597. important thing.

  1598. My friends, we're

  1599. only using the

  1600. Bible properly when

  1601. we're reading for

  1602. understanding, when

  1603. we're reading for

  1604. transformation.

  1605. That's why I've

  1606. always, over my

  1607. years, had a real

  1608. problem with the

  1609. old quiet time

  1610. mentality where you

  1611. just read a portion

  1612. of Scripture every

  1613. day.

  1614. And I know

  1615. Christians who did

  1616. that religiously.

  1617. They wouldn't go to

  1618. bed every night

  1619. before they read

  1620. their portion of

  1621. Scripture.

  1622. But it might only

  1623. be three minutes

  1624. like Marty was

  1625. doing, half

  1626. falling asleep or

  1627. checking their

  1628. phone at the

  1629. same time.

  1630. But, you know,

  1631. we've ticked the

  1632. box, we've read

  1633. the Bible.

  1634. Or parents get

  1635. children to

  1636. memorize lots of

  1637. Scripture.

  1638. And again, that

  1639. can be so

  1640. dangerous.

  1641. If we think that

  1642. by somehow

  1643. memorizing Scripture,

  1644. our children have

  1645. used Scripture

  1646. well and we've

  1647. taught our

  1648. children to use

  1649. Scripture well.

  1650. Memorizing is a

  1651. great thing.

  1652. but only if our

  1653. memorizing comes in

  1654. the context also

  1655. with their children

  1656. of teaching them

  1657. to life and

  1658. transformation in

  1659. that which they

  1660. learn.

  1661. And again, you

  1662. see, again, it

  1663. applies to the

  1664. internet.

  1665. It is so easy

  1666. today to find a

  1667. verse, to find a

  1668. quotation, to find a

  1669. commentary by a

  1670. famous preacher at

  1671. the press of a

  1672. button on Google.

  1673. And so again, we

  1674. quickly go to that

  1675. and we think, ah,

  1676. yes, I've got that.

  1677. Isn't that a really

  1678. good sentence there?

  1679. And so again, we

  1680. fill our minds with

  1681. knowledge.

  1682. But are we using

  1683. those things for

  1684. transformation?

  1685. Are we

  1686. understanding how

  1687. God brings life

  1688. through His word

  1689. and grows us

  1690. through His word?

  1691. Are we struggling

  1692. for wisdom that

  1693. changes the heart?

  1694. or are we just

  1695. gathering knowledge?

  1696. Somebody once

  1697. said, I think it

  1698. was Spurgeon, I'm

  1699. not quite sure,

  1700. said this, make no

  1701. mistake, Satan is

  1702. clever.

  1703. If he cannot keep

  1704. you out of the

  1705. Bible altogether,

  1706. then he will keep

  1707. you in it, but

  1708. focused on minor

  1709. details of doctrine,

  1710. so as you're

  1711. distracted and

  1712. making a big fuss

  1713. about very little,

  1714. or he will keep

  1715. you in it, but

  1716. with a dull mind

  1717. which is happy

  1718. just to read the

  1719. Bible in a year

  1720. or something like

  1721. that, more than

  1722. desire to be

  1723. changed by it.

  1724. Friends, I

  1725. finish my first

  1726. sentence again.

  1727. Is the statement

  1728. that the Bible is

  1729. central to

  1730. everything we are

  1731. and do, as

  1732. individuals here,

  1733. as Christians here,

  1734. and as a church,

  1735. is that a

  1736. practical truth

  1737. for you?

1738. or is it just a

  1739. cliche?

  1740. Let me pray.

  1741. Lord, forgive us

  1742. for sitting loose

  1743. to your word.

  1744. Forgive us, Lord,

  1745. for zeal

  1746. towards you,

  1747. as Paul says in

  1748. Romans chapter 10,

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  1749. zeal that's not

  1750. directed by knowledge

  1751. of your word.

  1752. forgive us, Lord,

  1753. for those things

  1754. that we've offered

  1755. you in worship

  1756. which would be

  1757. offensive to you

  1758. when you call us

  1759. first and foremost

  1760. to give our hearts,

  1761. to give our whole

  1762. minds, to give our

  1763. whole bodies in

  1764. response to you.

  1765. Help us to

  1766. know your word,

1767. help us to know you

  1768. through your word,

1769. and help us to value

  1770. and treasure that word.

  1771. In Jesus' name,

  1772. Amen.

  1773. Amen.
