  1. By means of introduction to this, I just want to share with you how much we actually pursue a good and a full life.

  2. We all want to have a full life.

  3. So much so that back in the 1930s and 40s, Harvard started a study that has been running for 75 years.

  4. They were college students at the time.

  5. I imagine there's not going to be much more than 75 years, bearing in mind that life expectancy hasn't changed that much.

  6. But they've run a study for 75 years trying to uncover the key to long-term happiness.

  7. We're so invested in this living a full life, living a happy life, living a life that's rich, that we will invest all kinds of efforts in achieving that.

  8. And we think of that fullness in a number of ways.

  9. I mean, for example, I want to live a life that will be admired.

  10. I want to be thought of as a good person.

  11. I lend my lawnmower to the neighbors when they ask.

  12. I worry about it the whole time, but I still lend it.

  13. I want a life that's rich with experiences.

  14. Every now and then, Facebook reminds me of things that just make me smile.

  15. You know, the holiday I went on 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 years ago, it lets me know the things that I've done, which reminds me of the things that I still have on my bucket list.

  16. That's what they call it when you get to 50.

  17. I also want a life of deep friendships.

  18. And that 75-year-long study that I said, their conclusion to a happy life, the number one thing is deep friendships, deep relationships.

  19. I want to know and I want to be known.

  20. I want a life marked by personal achievement.

  21. And by that I mean I want to make a difference in the world.

  22. I want people to remember me for my contribution to their lives.

  23. And I want a long life, too.

  24. When I'm gone, I want people to say, he had a good life.

  25. And friends, one of the things that our culture sells us in terms of pursuing that life is this.

  26. A full life means I need freedom.

  27. That full life demands freedom.

  28. We need to be free to pursue life to the full.

  29. Free to define who we are.

  30. Free to make choices for ourselves.

  31. Free to eat Chinese food when I want.

  32. And when I do, freedom to choose the dumplings and not the chicken feet.

  33. As I was offered in recent times.

  34. Freedom to choose who I love.

  35. Who I marry.

  36. I am so committed to this freedom.

  37. And I think we are as a culture that we will fight to the death for this freedom.

  38. And we do it because our lives are that important to us.

  39. Well, today we are going to look at the Gospel of John, as I have already said.

  40. And John was a man who met Jesus.

  41. He lived alongside Jesus.

  42. He learned from Jesus.

  43. He saw how Jesus lived and died.

  44. And lived again.

  45. That's a spoiler.

  46. Sorry.

  47. But he saw how Jesus lived and died.

  48. And John's conclusion was that there is life to the full to be had.

  49. And if you read his book, the Gospel of John, you'll also find out that that life, that life, abundant life, life to the full, is a key theme of his.

  50. But when it comes to pursuing life to the full, one of the things that John says is, there are a number of wrong ways of pursuing fullness of life.

  51. There are a number of wrong ways, but only one right way.

  52. And with John's help, we're going to look at three of the wrong ways that he presents.

  53. And the one right way.

  54. Okay, so let's start with the three wrong ways.

  55. And I'm going to move a little bit around the Bible, around the Gospel of John at least.

  56. So you're still in the same book.

  57. The verses will come up on here if you're not very good at navigating the Bible.

  58. But if you are, by all means, you can flick to them.

  59. So the three wrong ways.

  60. A self-improvement.

  61. You've got these on your bulletin.

  62. Self-improvement, self-indulgence, and social structures, or political structures if you prefer.

  63. So first, self-improvement.

  64. Very early in John's book, in fact, if you've got one of these Bibles, it's still on that first page, you know, first open page at the bottom here.

  65. Chapter 3.

  66. Very early in the book about Jesus, John introduces us to a man called Nicodemus.

  67. Nicodemus wanted fullness of life.

  68. And he was trying to build that life for himself through self-improvement, the religious branch of self-improvement.

  69. He worked hard at his religion.

  70. He was perhaps the best, the Dalai Lama of his time, if I dare say.

  71. He knew all about God.

  72. But he couldn't give you life.

  73. He had even learned and the title Teacher of Israel.

  74. So he knew the Bible better than anyone.

  75. Before Wikibible, there was Nicodemus.

  76. If he had a question, he could answer it.

  77. But he didn't know as much as Jesus.

  78. And Jesus, when he came to Jesus, Jesus told him the truth.

  79. Jesus said in verse 3, John chapter 3, verse 3,

    John 3:3

  80. Truly, truly, truly, I say to you, unless a person is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

  81. Unless a person is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

  82. What does that mean?

  83. Well, it means that no amount of effort, no self-help strategy, no action that we can perform can get us what we desire.

  84. They've explained the reality of sin last week.

  85. It's universal, he said.

  86. It's total.

  87. It affects every area of our life, he said.

  88. Deep down, we know.

  89. I'm not sure how to cough with these, I'm sorry.

  90. We know that brokenness exists within us.

  91. We know that we're not perfect, but still we try to fix it ourselves.

  92. I used to live like this.

  93. I don't live quite so much like that as I should, I guess.

  94. I used to live like this when I was a kid.

  95. I used to be the good kid.

  96. I used to be the kid with a clean room.

  97. I used to be the kid at school who sat in the front two rows of the classroom.

  98. As you know, that's the two rows that no one sits in generally.

  99. I used to be the kid with the top button done up.

  100. We had uniforms with ties and jackets.

  101. And the middle button on my blazer done up.

  102. I used to be the kid who always had an answer to the questions, always did his homework,

  103. always, always behaved in a polite way.

  104. I was the good kid.

  105. And I thought that that goodness actually was guaranteeing God's favor.

  106. And then my parents' relationship started to fall apart.

  107. And suddenly, I was faced with the reality that my goodness, it wasn't such a simple transaction

  108. between me and God.

  109. I was good, and then he followed suit.

  110. I cleaned my room, as one of the kids said.

  111. I get to heaven.

  112. It didn't work like that.

  113. I was building my life on how I lived.

  114. But no amount of effort, self-help strategy, no action that we can perform can do that.

  115. We can't earn it.

  116. It has to be given to us, is what John was saying, what Jesus was saying to John.

  117. We can't earn it.

  118. It has to be given to us.

  119. Now, the second thing that John takes us on a trip to, and it's the very next chapter,

  120. so he goes from self-improvement to self-indulgence.

  121. In the very next chapter, we meet the Samaritan woman.

  122. And I'm skimming over these because we have actually been doing a John series on these,

  123. so you should be reasonably familiar with them.

  124. And if you're not, it's page 888.

  125. Please, by all means, either go back to our sermon catalogs online,

  126. or at least read the chapter later.

  127. See, the Samaritan woman, she was also trying to build a life for herself.

  128. But for her, it was through sexual freedom.

  129. She had five husbands, we find out in this story.

  130. We don't find out why she had five husbands,

  131. but we do know, from the fact that she draws water in the middle of the day,

  132. that her choices had consequences.

  133. She was on the outside socially.

  134. She wanted to connect with someone so much.

  135. She wanted to belong, to love, and to be loved,

  136. more than anything else.

  137. And she proved it by sacrificing everything else for this goal.

  138. But five husbands later, she was further away than when she started.

  139. The man she was with now wouldn't even marry her.

  140. And again, Jesus spoke challenging, truthful words to her.

  141. Jesus says to her, and this is a paraphrase of John 4, verse 10,

    John 4:10

  142. which you can see in full on the screen.

  143. Jesus said to paraphrase,

  144. You are drinking from the wrong well.

  145. You are drinking from the wrong well.

  146. And we know, even 2,000 years later, we know this is still the case,

  147. and yet people still drink from that well.

  148. I know this song because it's been played on the radio.

  149. I don't own it, but I know this song,

  150. and it's Beyonce's song, All the Single Ladies.

  151. Hands up if you do know it, if you have heard of it.

  152. All the Single Ladies.

  153. Beyonce is a bit of a representative kind of person,

  154. a woman who really tries to fight for women's rights and women's freedoms.

  155. And she writes this song, All the Single Ladies,

  156. at the end of a three-year relationship that ended up breaking up.

  157. And the problem was that she broke up,

  158. the relationship broke up,

  159. and then when she started to date other guys,

  160. the other guy, the first guy, got jealous.

  161. And so she writes this song as a response.

  162. She gets all the single ladies in the room to stand up

  163. as part of the singing when she sings it live.

  164. And then she says to the girls that when the guy gets jealous,

  165. when you exercise your freedom of choice in terms of sexual partners,

  166. you tell him this,

  167. If you like it, you should have put a ring on it.

  168. If you like it, you should have put a ring on it.

  169. Why does she say that?

  170. Because she recognizes that in pursuit of sexual freedom,

  171. somehow it's a two-edged blade.

  172. It's cutting her even as she's pursuing it.

  173. She's finding herself in a situation where people

  174. within this kind of realm of sexual freedom

  175. won't commit to each other.

  176. And she doesn't like it.

  177. So she encourages her fellow women to hold out

  178. until the man commits.

  179. We idolize absolute freedom.

  180. We see it as the way to have fullness of life.

  181. But absolute freedom isolates us.

  182. And what Jesus says to the Samaritan woman is,

  183. you need to come to the source of life.

  184. If you want fullness of life, you need to come to the source.

  185. So we've got self-improvement, self-indulgence,

  186. and then social structures.

  187. The final wrong way that I'm going to share from John's book,

  188. there are others, but the final wrong way I want to share it,

  189. is a little bit further into the book.

  190. And this is chapter 6, so if you turn over to page 891,

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  191. if you've got these Bibles.

  192. This time a crowd of over 5,000 people

  193. was trying to build a life for themselves

  194. by choosing the leader who could provide it for them.

  195. This massive crowd had followed Jesus,

  196. just to paint the picture.

  197. They'd followed Jesus into a remote area,

  198. no shops, not even a McDonald's,

  199. and it's pretty hard even in Australia

  200. to get into a place where you're a long way from McDonald's.

  201. There was nowhere to buy food,

  202. and so Jesus fed them all miraculously.

  203. They ate until they were full,

  204. and there were still leftovers,

  205. way more leftovers than they even had to start with.

  206. So they thought,

  207. this man will make a good leader.

  208. We like what he says,

  209. and he can provide what we need.

  210. So they planned to make him a leader by force.

  211. They choose the one that they thought

  212. could provide the circumstances

  213. that they needed to thrive in life,

  214. and they choose to try and make him king.

  215. Isn't that an interesting thing?

  216. We still idolize that concept,

  217. us choosing our leader.

  218. Democracy, again, our ultimate ideal for leadership.

  219. It's something, again,

  220. that we would fight for in our culture.

  221. We would fight and die for

  222. the preservation of democracy,

  223. and it still doesn't work.

  224. Even when we choose the right people,

  225. we choose the right people for the wrong reasons.

  226. It's all about me exercising my freedom

  227. to do it my way,

  228. to get what I want,

  229. to get the conditions in life that I need,

  230. that I desire.

  231. But it doesn't work.

  232. Do I need to play the trump card?

  233. Or do we go to Boris now?

  234. Or do we go to our own culture now,

  235. where we're starting to see politicians make decisions

  236. that we just couldn't have imagined

  237. 10 or 20 years ago?

  238. Friends, whether we pursue life independently,

  239. through freedom of choice,

  240. or through political or social structures,

  241. it doesn't work.

  242. John presents them as three wrong ways

  243. of pursuing life.

  244. But even as he says that,

  245. he presents it in the context of the life of Jesus,

  246. through whom he has found the one right way

  247. to pursue life.

  248. You see, we know that life is an internal thing.

  249. We know that life is found in connection.

  250. Surprise, surprise.

  251. We know that life is affected by leadership structures.

  252. These things are all real things.

  253. But John found all of these things

  254. in one person.

  255. Jesus.

  256. And he said,

  257. Jesus came to give this fullness of life

  258. that we pursue,

  259. to give it away.

  260. So who is Jesus?

  261. Not who do we think Jesus is,

  262. but who is Jesus?

  263. Well, John opens up by actually answering that question

  264. at the very beginning of chapter one.

  265. And so we're back into chapter one now,

  266. and you can stay here for the farewell now.

  267. John opens up by saying that Jesus is the word,

  268. or the logos in Greek.

  269. It's an interesting word,

  270. if you'll excuse a pun.

  271. It's full of meaning

  272. for pretty much everyone,

  273. really, in a sense.

  274. Because it represents something

  275. that we're actually trying to pursue.

  276. So for the Jews,

  277. the concept of the word

  278. carried thoughts of God's powerful

  279. and effective action

  280. in creation,

  281. rule,

  282. judgment,

  283. and deliverance.

  284. For the Greeks,

  285. logos was a philosophical term.

  286. It was a shaping,

  287. ordering,

  288. and directing principle in life.

  289. Something that was at times

  290. personified in literature,

  291. but never in reality for them.

  292. In the Chinese Bible,

  293. as we try and translate this word logos

  294. into Chinese.

  295. I think I've got this right.

  296. Is it Tao?

  297. Tao?

  298. Yep.

  299. Tao is,

  300. again,

  301. it's a philosophical term,

  302. a philosophy,

  303. about the proper path in life.

  304. And that's a very,

  305. very narrow definition of it.

  306. If you're a Taoist,

  307. then you'd probably be offended by that,

  308. but there is so much to Taoism beyond that.

  309. But the concept is kind of similar.

  310. It's this philosophy of living life well,

  311. richness of life.

  312. And so there are these kind of terms and themes

  313. that resonate within all kinds of different cultures

  314. because we all pursue life.

  315. But none of these terms are actually meant to define Jesus.

  316. So as John writes,

  317. in the beginning was the word,

  318. he's not saying,

  319. so this is the one who is the actual person

  320. of the Greek term.

  321. They,

  322. those terms,

  323. are meant to carry,

  324. are to tell us

  325. that whoever can carry this title

  326. must be important.

  327. They're not meant to define Jesus

  328. so much as he is meant to actually say,

  329. John is meant,

  330. trying to say that Jesus is the one

  331. who all this,

  332. you know,

  333. this thing that we're searching for

  334. and we just can't quite grasp a hold of,

  335. he is the one

  336. who actually has it.

  337. John's point is that we're all searching

  338. for that full life

  339. and that Jesus is the answer to that search.

  340. Jesus is meant to show us

  341. what life is all about.

  342. If you're looking for answers,

  343. then Jesus is the person to come to.

  344. If you don't know Jesus,

  345. John is saying that Jesus is a big deal

  346. and you should find out about him.

  347. In fact,

  348. John goes on to say,

  349. Jesus is more than a big deal.

  350. He is actually the ultimate being.

  351. Jesus is God himself.

  352. Not a minor God

  353. like the JWs will try and convince you.

  354. He is God.

  355. We read in those words,

  356. nothing was made

  357. except through him.

  358. He made everything that was made.

  359. He is God.

  360. So he has more than answers.

  361. And then next thing John does

  362. is he introduces Jesus as the creator,

  363. the creator of everything

  364. that has been created.

  365. In our first talk in the series,

  366. if you remember,

  367. we looked at Romans chapter 11,

    Romans 11 chapter mention

  368. the last few verses,

  369. 33 to 36.

  370. And we looked at who God is

  371. in relation to us.

  372. He is the source.

  373. From him and through him

  374. and to him are all things.

  375. So he doesn't need us.

  376. We need him.

  377. The word,

  378. God,

  379. creator.

  380. These are all massive categories.

  381. And then John becomes a little bit more

  382. specific or relevant to us,

  383. starts to land them

  384. in the next two categories that he uses.

  385. Jesus is described

  386. as the source of life

  387. and light.

  388. The source of life.

  389. Life.

  390. That thing that we are trying to get right.

  391. That thing that frustrates us.

  392. That promises so much

  393. and even kind of delivers at times.

  394. But that just keeps on letting us down.

  395. Do you know that frustration?

  396. Do you feel it at times?

  397. Does it keep you awake at night?

  398. Maybe I can illustrate

  399. with a simple example.

  400. We've had quite a few babies

  401. born in recent times.

  402. Have you ever watched a baby sleeping?

  403. Ever looked at how peaceful they are

  404. when they're asleep?

  405. And envied them

  406. that peace that they have?

  407. Every now and then,

  408. as you'll know,

  409. as a baby,

  410. even while they're asleep,

  411. their face can scrunch up.

  412. And even at that point,

  413. your heart goes out to them.

  414. I mean,

  415. they're only dreaming.

  416. They're perfectly comfortable

  417. where they are.

  418. They're only dreaming

  419. or maybe they've got a bit of wind

  420. or something like that.

  421. But still,

  422. you find yourself,

  423. sort of,

  424. your heart reaching out

  425. to that baby

  426. and promising them

  427. that you love them,

  428. that everything's all right

  429. and that you'll do everything

  430. to keep it that way for them.

  431. You make massive promises

  432. knowing that you just can't keep them.

  433. Life isn't that simple.

  434. But for Jesus,

  435. it is.

  436. Jesus is the source of life.

  437. And Jesus breaks this open

  438. in two ways.

  439. He talks about life

  440. in the sense of quantity

  441. as we go through John

  442. and life in the sense of quality.

  443. So in the sense of quantity,

  444. in John 3, 16,

  445. while he's talking to Nicodemus,

  446. Jesus says,

  447. For God so loved the world

  448. that he gave his only son

  449. that whoever believes in him

  450. should not perish

  451. but have eternal life.

  452. The man who was trying to live

  453. the self-improvement lifestyle

  454. was doing it for a reason.

  455. He was religious

  456. because he wanted

  457. a part of heaven.

  458. He was angling

  459. for eternal life.

  460. And Jesus claims

  461. that he is that source,

  462. the source of that life.

  463. So quantity,

  464. but also quality.

  465. In John 10, verse 10,

    John 10:10

  466. Jesus claims to be

  467. the source of abundant life.

  468. He says in verse 10,

  469. chapter 10, verse 10,

  470. The thief comes only

  471. to steal and kill and destroy.

  472. I came that they may have life

  473. and have it abundantly.

  474. And in John 14, 6,

  475. John again describes

  476. Jesus as the life.

  477. He says,

  478. I am the way,

  479. the truth,

  480. and the life.

  481. No one comes to the Father

  482. except through me.

  483. Abundant life,

  484. full life,

  485. everlasting life.

  486. And this is not

  487. an in the future

  488. kind of promise.

  489. The force of Jesus' words here

  490. are that we find life in him

  491. when we believe in him.

  492. Not at some point

  493. in the future,

  494. but as soon as

  495. we believe in him,

  496. that life begins.

  497. But how does this work?

  498. I mean,

  499. you could be tempted to say,

  500. life doesn't seem any better

  501. or any longer

  502. as a Christian

  503. than it does

  504. for people who aren't Christians.

  505. If anything,

  506. this is something

  507. that even Jesus said,

  508. life gets harder

  509. as a Christian.

  510. and all the more

  511. for knowing

  512. that God can sort out

  513. any hardship we face

  514. if he chooses to.

  515. He could make life dreamy

  516. if he chose to.

  517. But I think

  518. this is part of the problem

  519. that John is trying

  520. to break us out of

  521. with these big terms

  522. that he's using.

  523. Our dreams are born

  524. of our desires.

  525. As Dave said last week,

  526. we're all just so busy

  527. playing God,

  528. exercising our freedom

  529. to indulge ourselves,

  530. elevating our opinions

  531. about what that requires

  532. to the status

  533. of unquestionable.

  534. Exercising our freedom

  535. to indulge ourselves,

  536. that's what sin is.

  537. we're so busy

  538. playing God

  539. that we don't know

  540. how good it is

  541. to be reconnected

  542. to God.

  543. And even despite

  544. being post-enlightenment,

  545. we can't see

  546. that this world

  547. is suffering

  548. because of our freedom

  549. of choices

  550. that we've pursued.

  551. This mess is ours.

  552. The darkness

  553. in this world

  554. is ours.

  555. I can get concrete,

  556. more external,

  557. things like global warming,

  558. plastics in our oceans,

  559. a Western lifestyle

  560. that's sustained

  561. by unethical

  562. business practices,

  563. relationships that are

  564. less permanent

  565. and seemingly

  566. more painful than ever.

  567. And despite

  568. our best efforts,

  569. we still struggle

  570. to set things right.

  571. The modernist dream

  572. is ended.

  573. We've given up on that.

  574. Apart from God,

  575. we live in the dark.

  576. And John says,

  577. into this darkness

  578. has come Jesus.

  579. The only light

  580. is Jesus.

  581. God himself

  582. come to us.

  583. The one who reveals

  584. the character

  585. of the God we ignore.

  586. Think about that.

  587. Because whether you believe

  588. in John or not,

  589. this is a huge claim.

  590. Whether you think

  591. John is right,

  592. surely this Jesus

  593. is at least worth a look

  594. if someone's going to

  595. claim these things about him.

  596. So what kind of light

  597. is this Jesus?

  598. What kind of God is he?

  599. Well, the best way

  600. I can sum it up

  601. is this.

  602. We got into this

  603. huge mess ourselves,

  604. pursuing life

  605. our own way.

  606. And the best way

  607. I can suggest it

  608. is this.

  609. That Jesus

  610. is the ultimate

  611. cross-cultural

  612. church-planning

  613. missionary

  614. to a people

  615. in an absolute mess

  616. of their own making.

  617. He's ultimate.

  618. And if we just skim

  619. through this first 18 verses

  620. or skim over the first

  621. 15 or so of them,

  622. he's ultimate

  623. in the sense

  624. that he's God himself.

  625. We see that in verses 1 and 2.

  626. He's cross-cultural

  627. and we can see that

  628. in verses 3 and 9

  629. that he came from heaven

  630. to earth,

  631. creator to creature.

  632. He's a church planter.

  633. In verses 10 to 13,

  634. he came to gather

  635. those

  636. who received him

  637. to himself.

  638. The image John uses

  639. here is so intimate

  640. as well.

  641. It's a family gathering.

  642. He's gathering the children

  643. to himself.

  644. And he's a missionary

  645. and we see this

  646. in verses 14 and 15.

  647. Jesus is God himself

  648. who came and lived

  649. among us.

  650. The word dwelt

  651. or tabernacle,

  652. set up his tent,

  653. set up his home

  654. among us.

  655. He was a carpenter

  656. for crying out loud.

  657. He could build homes.

  658. He is so glorious,

  659. says John,

  660. in these verses.

  661. And literally,

  662. he is so glorious

  663. that it was painful

  664. to look at him

  665. and yet he chose

  666. to become a brother,

  667. a son,

  668. a neighbor,

  669. a friend,

  670. a savior.

  671. through Jesus

  672. we see God.

  673. All the goodness

  674. of God.

  675. John is saying

  676. that if we want to know

  677. what it's like

  678. to live in the light,

  679. if we want to know

  680. fullness of life,

  681. then we need to know

  682. this Jesus.

  683. Jesus is a source

  684. of the life

  685. that we long for.

  686. And this Jesus

  687. is the God

  688. who gives life away.

  689. That thing

  690. that we so relentlessly

  691. and frustratingly

  692. pursue,

  693. God gives us.

  694. He's so full of life

  695. that he actually

  696. can pour it out

  697. into us.

  698. John says in verse 14

  699. that Jesus is full

  700. of grace

  701. and truth.

  702. Grace

  703. in the sense

  704. of its undeserved

  705. favor.

  706. It's a gift.

  707. Truth.

  708. Well,

  709. I think you know

  710. what that is,

  711. don't you?

  712. I know some of you

  713. have been stretching it

  714. with your children

  715. telling them

  716. they get to heaven

  717. if they clean their rooms.

  718. But,

  719. you know,

  720. we know that's wrong,

  721. don't we?

  722. We know what truth is.

  723. We really want truth

  724. but we don't always like it

  725. when it starts being spoken

  726. to us.

  727. The good life

  728. that we strive for

  729. within,

  730. the rich life

  731. that we pursue

  732. by any means

  733. we see fit,

  734. the prosperity of life

  735. we try to nurture

  736. through political

  737. or social systems,

  738. the life that eludes us,

  739. Jesus is giving it away.

  740. And to explain how,

  741. he brings up

  742. John the Baptist again,

  743. the one who was supposed

  744. to witness to Jesus,

  745. Psalm from verses 6 to 8

  746. in this first chapter.

  747. It's no coincidence

  748. because John the Baptist

  749. did witness to Jesus

  750. and in this chapter as well,

  751. just not far forward

  752. in verse 29.

  753. And the very first time

  754. John the Baptist

  755. witnesses to who Jesus is,

  756. he explains how grace works.

  757. Look at verse 29.

  758. John the Baptist

  759. sees Jesus coming toward him

  760. and he says this,

  761. Behold the Lamb of God

  762. who takes away

  763. the sin of the world.

  764. Jesus is a lamb.

  765. It's a metaphor,

  766. not literally a lamb.

  767. But in Isaiah 53.6,

  768. Isaiah prophesies

  769. about the coming Savior

  770. and he uses this same metaphor.

  771. Isaiah 53.6,

  772. All we like sheep

  773. have gone astray.

  774. We've turned everyone

  775. to his own way.

  776. Does that sound familiar?

  777. 3,000 years ago?

  778. Same words apply.

  779. And the Lord

  780. has laid on him

  781. this Savior to come,

  782. the iniquity of us all.

  783. Their sin and ours

  784. is to time and time again

  785. play God

  786. and refuse to let God be God

  787. as Dave talked about last week.

  788. And through grace,

  789. fullness of life

  790. comes to us free.

  791. And the truth of it,

  792. it comes free

  793. because we

  794. could not achieve it ourselves.

  795. So Jesus came

  796. to bear the cost.

  797. Jesus,

  798. our God,

  799. took the punishment

  800. we deserve.

  801. And he calls us

  802. to receive him.

  803. To believe.

  804. To simply believe.

  805. Friends,

  806. we strive for this

  807. fullness of life

  808. and we get tasters of it.

  809. We do.

  810. At times it seems

  811. like we get it all.

  812. But then something happens

  813. that kind of lets us know

  814. that we were

  815. kidding ourselves.

  816. Nicodemus,

  817. he got closer to the good life

  818. than any of us ever will.

  819. But still,

  820. he came to Jesus

  821. with questions.

  822. Still,

  823. he just wasn't sure.

  824. And the Samaritan woman,

  825. man,

  826. she pursued life

  827. harder than most of us will.

  828. But still,

  829. she came up dry.

  830. Still,

  831. she thirsted

  832. for something more.

  833. And the 5,000,

  834. well,

  835. they saw an opportunity

  836. to secure their lives,

  837. so they thought.

  838. But still,

  839. they were looking

  840. at the darkness

  841. in the world

  842. and trying to preserve

  843. themselves from it

  844. instead of running

  845. toward the light.

  846. And then Jesus

  847. breaks in.

  848. He shows us

  849. that self-improvement,

  850. self-indulgence

  851. and social structures

  852. are not enough.

  853. We can't make this life

  854. for ourselves.

  855. We need him

  856. to give it to us.

  857. And it begins now

  858. as we learn

  859. to abide in him,

  860. to connect back to him

  861. relationally.

  862. We need to come

  863. to Jesus

  864. to find true life

  865. and freedom

  866. and security

  867. in him.

  868. Let me pray.

  869. Father God,

  870. I pray that for

  871. those of us here

  872. who know this truth,

  873. that we will be encouraged,

  874. that it will build

  875. our confidence

  876. in the truth

  877. of coming to you,

  878. receiving Jesus

  879. and believing in him.

  880. And for those of us,

  881. Lord,

  882. I pray that

  883. who don't yet know you

  884. as their savior,

  885. we pray that you would

  886. show yourself to them

  887. through the words

  888. of the gospel of John.

  889. And at least,

  890. Lord,

  891. be interested enough

  892. to inquire

  893. about who this man is,

  894. who this God-become man is

  895. that John makes

  896. such big claims about.

  897. And Lord,

  898. as we daily

  899. seek to

  900. relinquish

  901. our God-like control

  902. of our own lives,

  903. help us

  904. to

  905. be nourished

  906. by being

  907. reconnected to you.

  908. Help us to see life

  909. as,

  910. the fullness of life

  911. as beginning

  912. and ending

  913. with being in a

  914. right relationship

  915. with you.

  916. Fill us to

  917. full with the life

  918. that only you can provide,

  919. we pray.

  920. In Jesus' name.

  921. Amen.

  922. Amen.
