  1. Well, good morning, everyone.

  2. Isn't that a lovely phrase, faultless stand before the throne?

  3. That's a lovely phrase.

  4. Will you pray with me as we come to God's Word?

  5. Our Father, we thank you that you're a God who speaks hope to us.

  6. Lord, we thank you that our hope is not wishful thinking,

  7. but it is grounded in your Son's death and resurrection.

  8. Thank you that we have such a solid place to stand.

  9. Lord, I pray that for those who are burdened by their sin,

  10. that you would speak into their hearts this morning.

  11. And assure them that they are yours and washed.

  12. Lord, for those of us who are just going along with the ways of the world

  13. and not caring about you, I pray that you would convict us.

  14. Lord, for those who are suffering and just burdened,

  15. I pray that you would renew us with just such a bright picture of what is to come.

  16. Lord, please speak to us.

  17. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

  18. Well, think ahead to this coming week.

  19. What are some good things that could happen?

  20. So I want you to start listing them in your head.

  21. What are some good things that could happen?

  22. Now, what would be the best thing that could happen?

  23. Do you feel like I'm trying to trap you?

  24. You know this sermon is about heaven.

  25. I'm not trying to trap you.

  26. What else is your heart going to?

  27. What are you thinking of?

  28. I wonder if anyone here thought about winning the Powerball.

  29. $150 million last week.

  30. I'm not encouraging that, by the way.

  31. Did anyone think of a new car?

  32. I'm looking forward to a new laptop.

  33. My current one takes two attempts to start up.

  34. I can't be too harsh on it because it takes me two attempts to start up in the morning.

  35. Would the best thing this week be if you met the love of your life?

  36. Reconciling that strange relationship.

  37. Is it something to do with your kids or grandkids?

  38. Getting that home loan approved.

  39. Passing those exams that are keeping you up at night.

  40. Being on holidays.

  41. Maybe some thought of their anxiety or depression being lifted.

  42. Maybe you even thought the best thing is if you died and went to be with the Lord.

  43. Maybe you thought of your loved one.

  44. That they would come to Christ.

  45. And have life.

  46. I wonder, was your first thought, the best thing that could happen this week is if Jesus turned up.

  47. And I saw him face to face.

  48. And his idea of heaven on earth was put into full effect.

  49. For those of us who belong to Christ, when we stop and think about it, we genuinely do desire this, don't we?

  50. We really do.

  51. It is our deepest desire.

  52. But why is the future that our Father has promised us, the future that Christ died to give us,

  53. the future that the Holy Spirit is preparing us for,

  54. why doesn't it flood our hearts with an all-consuming desire?

  55. I suspect the answer is, Jesus' words, where your treasure is, there your heart is also.

  56. Whatever else your heart cherishes more than our future with Christ,

  57. that thing will actually make the idea of heaven unappealing.

  58. How do we replace a lesser love with a greater love?

  59. We do that.

  60. Thomas Chalmers calls it the expulsive power of a new affection.

  61. You get rid of one affection by replacing it with a greater affection.

  62. But perhaps part of the problem is that it's just your own imaginary ideas of heaven that you find unappealing.

  63. Whatever the case is, if you're loving something else more than Christ,

  64. or if you've got just a wrong idea of heaven, the solution's the same.

  65. We need to listen to what God says.

  66. What is our future hope?

  67. What is it?

  68. What are we looking forward to?

  69. What is it?

  70. So we're finishing our series in God's words,

  71. and it's only fitting that we listen to God's final word in the Bible in Revelation 21 and 22,

  72. and it is a word of hope.

  73. Isn't it great that God's final word to us is hope?

  74. In Revelation 21 and 22, God shows the Apostle John a vision of the eternal age to come.

  75. It is full of imagery, but it's not a photograph of what it's literally going to be like.

  76. And it's also not a riddle that you have to solve.

  77. Every sentence is just jam-packed with stuff from the Old Testament.

  78. It's a picture upon picture.

  79. It's a picture upon picture, mixing metaphors, looking at the same thing from multiple angles to give us a theological picture.

  80. So what are we about to see?

  81. What is the end point for all God's work of creating and sustaining the world,

  82. speaking and revealing himself, redeeming through the blood of Christ in his resurrection,

  83. sanctifying his church, judging the world and sin and Satan?

  84. What is God's goal?

  85. What's his end point that he is determined to achieve?

  86. What's he doing?

  87. Where are we going?

  88. We can't cover it all, but we're going to focus on five things.

  89. We're going to see a new heaven and a new earth.

  90. We're going to see the church as the bride.

  91. The bride, the bride adorned for her husband.

  92. The best thing, we're going to see his face.

  93. What we won't see is any curse anymore.

  94. And because we won't see anything that can wreck it, it will be forever.

  95. Then we'll finish by asking a few questions.

  96. How can I be sure that this is my future?

  97. How can we be sure that he really is coming?

  98. And what are we called to do until he comes?

  99. Have you been to both a Christian and a non-Christian funeral?

  100. Is there a difference?

  101. Did you sense a massive difference?

  102. Hope.

  103. Hope.

  104. As Christians, we take deep comfort in the fact that we will be with our Lord,

  105. freed from the agony of this world.

  106. There's enormous comfort in this.

  107. But is that what we're meant to be looking forward to?

  108. Is that the end point?

  109. It's good, but is it the end point?

  110. Did Jesus rise from the dead so that we could be with him in a spiritual,

  111. bodiless existence in heaven?

  112. Verse 1 is God's end point.

  113. All these chapters.

  114. Verse 1.

  115. Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth.

  116. For the first heaven and the first earth had passed away.

  117. God's goal for creation is not that we escape it,

  118. but that his original purposes will be fully and finally realized.

  119. Verse 5.

  120. And he who was seated on the throne said,

  121. Behold, look, I am making all things new.

  122. And he said to me,

  123. It is done.

  124. On the seventh day of creation, it is finished.

  125. God's purposes.

  126. At the completion of King Solomon's temple in Jerusalem in the Promised Land,

  127. it is finished.

  128. As Jesus draws his last breath, dying on the cross for your sin,

  129. before rising to new life,

  130. it is finished.

  131. And we're looking forward to when God says for the very last time,

  132. when he resurrects heaven and earth,

  133. resurrects our bodies,

  134. it is finished.

  135. If you're wondering what heaven will be like,

  136. go for a walk.

  137. Look at the stars.

  138. Feel the breeze.

  139. Roll in the grass.

  140. Make angels in the grass.

  141. That's what we're encouraged to do at college.

  142. Smell the flowers.

  143. Eat some freshly baked bread.

  144. Imagine, if you can,

  145. nothing ruining it.

  146. It's a new heaven and a new earth.

  147. But before we get too obsessed with the place itself,

  148. we have to focus our attention on what God is looking forward to most of all.

  149. And surprisingly, perhaps,

  150. the majority of Revelation 21 and 22

  151. is about the church.

  152. Verse 2,

  153. When you attend a wedding,

  154. and the bride, in all her beauty,

  155. shining and glimmering,

  156. walks down the aisle,

  157. do you take a look at the groom

  158. to see his reaction?

  159. Now, some men don't cry.

  160. I cannot claim to be one of those men.

  161. But this moment is too powerful

  162. and overwhelms a lot of guys.

  163. When a husband's beloved is presented

  164. in all her glory and all for him,

  165. all the preparation has been leading to this moment.

  166. They are on the brink of uniting forever.

  167. What's God's goal?

  168. What's history moving towards?

  169. The permanent union of Christ and his beloved, the church.

  170. Tom Wright calls it the marriage of heaven and earth.

  171. This picture of the bride is zoomed in on

  172. from verse 9 onwards.

  173. The angel says to John,

  174. Come, I will show you the bride,

  175. the wife of the Lamb.

  176. And what has he shown?

  177. A city.

  178. So don't picture a city wearing a wedding dress.

  179. Mixing metaphors, remember.

  180. It's the New Jerusalem.

  181. It's the place God has chosen to live with his people.

  182. The place where God's name is.

  183. We're not going to go into all the details,

  184. but if you skim these verses or read them later on,

  185. you see all the precious jewels in the streets are gold.

  186. God's church will be beautiful.

  187. Precious.

  188. In God's sight.

  189. No blemish whatsoever.

  190. Holy.

  191. You might be tempted to think that the church is ugly now.

  192. It's just getting ready.

  193. It's still in preparation.

  194. It's going to sparkle.

  195. The city is made up of all the people of God

  196. from north, south, east and west.

  197. All the world.

  198. People from all the world.

  199. The gates are always open

  200. because there's nothing to threaten it

  201. from the outside or from within the church.

  202. Nothing threatening it anymore.

  203. No Satan.

  204. No sinful desires.

  205. No divisions in the church.

  206. But the church, finally holy.

  207. United as one bride,

  208. giving all her affection to her one husband.

  209. Jesus Christ.

  210. It's relational imagery, isn't it?

  211. It's purity language.

  212. And it's not like the church being united to Jesus

  213. is approaching something like marriage.

  214. It's the other way around.

  215. Marriage is just a small taste

  216. of what the real and the permanent thing will be like.

  217. Perhaps the most important feature of this city

  218. is that it's a cube.

  219. 2,000 kilometers in length and width and height.

  220. That's a bit weird, isn't it?

  221. A bit random.

  222. There's only one other thing in the Bible that is a cube.

  223. Do you remember what it is?

  224. I didn't.

  225. Someone had to tell me this week.

  226. The Holy of Holies.

  227. The innermost part of the temple

  228. where God's presence is.

  229. The closest you can get to God.

  230. And so, of course, John doesn't see a temple.

  231. There is no temple in the future

  232. because God is immediately with us.

  233. We don't need the picture anymore.

  234. We've got the real thing.

  235. The church.

  236. God dwelling in his church.

  237. The Holy of Holies.

  238. That's what we're looking forward to.

  239. The marriage of heaven and earth.

  240. Verse 6.

  241. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,

  242. Behold,

  243. the dwelling place of God is with man.

  244. He will dwell with them and they will be his people.

  245. And God himself

  246. will be with them as their God.

  247. The greatest thing we lost at the fall of humanity

  248. was not paradise.

  249. It was God's presence.

  250. At Mount Sinai,

  251. God offered Israel to be their God

  252. and they would be his treasured possession.

  253. He would dwell with them in the tabernacle

  254. and in the temple.

  255. But what happened then?

  256. Even while the wedding documents,

  257. the covenant was being signed

  258. with Moses on the mountain,

  259. the people are down below committing adultery,

  260. giving their affections to other gods.

  261. But God is committed to his plan.

  262. And unlike Moses,

  263. who had to be hidden behind a rock

  264. to see only the back of God

  265. and only for a moment,

  266. soon God will come to earth

  267. and make his home with us forever.

  268. The best thing about our future,

  269. your future,

  270. is summed up in 22 verse 4.

  271. They will see his face.

  272. I think we get a sense

  273. of what this will be like

  274. with those YouTube videos.

  275. Not just any YouTube video,

  276. but where there's the little girl

  277. and her father is a soldier in the army

  278. and he's been deployed overseas for years.

  279. And although she has the security

  280. of living in the house

  281. and food and clothing,

  282. although she's received letters from her dad

  283. while he's been away,

  284. messages from him,

  285. you watch those videos.

  286. That day when he enters their home

  287. and the little girl sees her father's face,

  288. the joy is overwhelming.

  289. We will see his face.

  290. Our father will be home with us on earth.

  291. Our hope is not so much

  292. that we are waiting for a place.

  293. That'll be excellent.

  294. That's part of it.

  295. But the main thing we're looking forward to

  296. is a person.

  297. Our God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

  298. dwelling with us.

  299. We will see his face.

  300. Em and I were in Barabah,

  301. a farming town past Townworth two years ago.

  302. It was only a short time into the drought.

  303. And we saw cows so skinny

  304. that, you know, you can see their ribs.

  305. And we saw them gathered around

  306. what used to be a dam,

  307. but it's just this puddle of dirty water.

  308. And there's a saying that we heard up there,

  309. which is a pretty disturbing thing,

  310. but you've got to understand first

  311. that farmers love their animals

  312. way more than people in the city can understand.

  313. They really love their animals.

  314. But there's a saying in rural towns

  315. that during drought,

  316. farmers buy enough bullets

  317. for each of their animals plus one.

  318. It is that devastating.

  319. While being shouted to dinner

  320. by such a faithful Christian

  321. cattle farming family,

  322. it started to rain.

  323. It was only a sprinkle,

  324. but gee, it was exciting.

  325. It was so exciting.

  326. It was just a sprinkle.

  327. They need a lot more.

  328. At the moment,

  329. our bodies,

  330. our relationships,

  331. our society,

  332. our earth

  333. are under God's curse

  334. for our refusal

  335. to let God be God.

  336. We live in a kind

  337. of spiritual drought,

  338. lacking the knowledge

  339. and presence of God.

  340. But we see in chapter 22

  341. the river of the water of life,

  342. bright as crystal,

  343. flowing from the throne of God

  344. and of the Lamb

  345. through the middle

  346. of the street of the city.

  347. Also on either side of the river,

  348. the tree of life

  349. with its 12 kinds of fruit,

  350. yielding its fruit each month.

  351. The leaves of the tree

  352. were for the healing

  353. of the nations.

  354. No longer will there be

  355. anything accursed.

  356. He will wipe

  357. every tear

  358. from their eyes.

  359. And death

  360. shall be no more.

  361. Neither shall there be mourning

  362. nor crying

  363. nor pain

  364. anymore

  365. for the former things

  366. have passed away.

  367. Every time you are brought

  368. to tears

  369. by this world,

  370. brought to tears

  371. by your own sinfulness,

  372. brought to tears

  373. by broken relationships,

  374. brought to tears

  375. by the curse

  376. just impacting

  377. everything.

  378. And you wipe away

  379. your tears.

  380. Remember,

  381. remember,

  382. use it as a

  383. memory device.

  384. When you wipe away

  385. your tears,

  386. He will wipe away

  387. your tears

  388. one day.

  389. He Himself will.

  390. every single tear.

  391. No more doubts

  392. about God's love

  393. for us.

  394. No more

  395. sensing God's

  396. displeasure.

  397. Can you imagine it?

  398. No more accusations

  399. from Satan.

  400. No more temptation

  401. from the sinful world

  402. around us.

  403. No more temptation

  404. from our sinful desires

  405. inside.

  406. No more mixed motives

  407. for what we do.

  408. No more burdensome

  409. duties

  410. that end up fruitless.

  411. No more

  412. division

  413. or arguments

  414. in the church.

  415. No more

  416. carrying the sufferings

  417. of our brothers

  418. and sisters.

  419. No more

  420. of our own suffering.

  421. No more being alone.

  422. No more fear

  423. of dying.

  424. Can you

  425. imagine it?

  426. Our world

  427. doesn't need

  428. a little bit

  429. of fixing,

  430. a bit more

  431. evolution,

  432. a bit more

  433. progress.

  434. It doesn't

  435. need that.

  436. It needs

  437. the curse

  438. lifted

  439. to be renewed

  440. into immortality,

  441. to be filled

  442. with God

  443. Himself.

  444. And that's

  445. what God

  446. promises us.

  447. how joyful

  448. is it

  449. to hear

  450. the news

  451. that Catherine's

  452. bowel surgery

  453. was successful

  454. and got rid

  455. of the cancer.

  456. That's such a relief

  457. hearing that.

  458. Such joy

  459. hearing that,

  460. isn't it?

  461. praise God

  462. for His mercy.

  463. Do you know

  464. what will be

  465. even better?

  466. That's pretty

  467. good.

  468. Do you know

  469. what will be

  470. even better?

  471. Is if this

  472. week Jesus

  473. turns up

  474. and Catherine

  475. is raised,

  476. her whole body

  477. raised to be

  478. like Christ

  479. and together

  480. with us

  481. we see

  482. His face.

  483. If external

  484. enemies are

  485. gone,

  486. if the church

  487. is made

  488. holy from

  489. within,

  490. if God's

  491. presence fills

  492. the earth

  493. and His will

  494. is done on

  495. earth as it

  496. is in heaven,

  497. if death

  498. and corruption

  499. are dead,

  500. then we

  501. will reign

  502. with Christ

  503. on the earth

  504. forever.

  505. It is

  506. permanent.

  507. But don't

  508. confuse

  509. permanent

  510. with static.

  511. I think

  512. sometimes

  513. we can be

  514. put off

  515. by the idea

  516. of heaven

  517. because we

  518. think of it

  519. as static.

  520. We're just

  521. doing the

  522. same thing

  523. over and

  524. over.

  525. Like,

  526. you know

  527. those songs

  528. with the

  529. bridge that

  530. just repeats

  531. just a few

  532. too many

  533. times?

  534. But for

  535. eternity?

  536. Are you

  537. kidding me?

  538. I think

  539. sometimes we

  540. think like

  541. that in

  542. terms of

  543. heaven.

  544. Have you

  545. seen the

  546. variety of

  547. this world

  548. lately?

  549. The different

  550. beauties?

  551. The difference

  552. between the

  553. blue mountains

  554. mountains,

  555. to the

  556. beauty of

  557. Lake

  558. Macquarie,

  559. to the

  560. beauty of

  561. the sand

  562. dunes,

  563. it's just

  564. so diverse.

  565. Have you

  566. got sick of

  567. listening to

  568. music lately?

  569. You might

  570. get sick of

  571. a certain

  572. song, but

  573. have you

  574. got sick of

  575. listening to

  576. music?

  577. Have you

  578. got tired of

  579. spending time

  580. with loved

  581. ones?

  582. have you

  583. got tired of

  584. discovering new

  585. truth?

  586. There's an

  587. eternal depth

  588. to knowing

  589. who God

  590. is, and

  591. so it's a

  592. good thing

  593. we've got an

  594. eternity to

  595. get to know

  596. him.

  597. There's

  598. nothing in

  599. God's idea

  600. of the future

  601. that suggests

  602. it's static.

  603. It's very

  604. dynamic, but

  605. it is forever.

  606. it's

  607. permanent.

  608. God's

  609. final word

  610. of hope

  611. to us is

  612. a new

  613. heaven and

  614. a new

  615. earth.

  616. The

  617. bride

  618. in holy

  619. beauty,

  620. seeing

  621. his face.

  622. You

  623. won't have

  624. to put up

  625. with my

  626. face up

  627. here.

  628. You'll

  629. see him

  630. without

  631. any

  632. curse

  633. forever.

  634. The

  635. marriage of

  636. heaven and

  637. earth, is

  638. that not

  639. the best

  640. thing that

  641. could happen

  642. this week?

  643. Well, this

  644. picture of

  645. our hope, we're

  646. left with a few

  647. questions.

  648. Firstly, how

  649. can I be

  650. sure that

  651. this is my

  652. future?

  653. verse 6, God

  654. identifies who

  655. will receive

  656. this future.

  657. To the

  658. thirsty, I

  659. will give

  660. from the

  661. spring of

  662. the water

  663. of life

  664. without

  665. payment.

  666. This is an

  667. echo of the

  668. gospel invitation

  669. in Isaiah

  670. 51.

  671. Come,

  672. come,

  673. come, everyone

  674. who thirsts,

  675. come to the

  676. waters, and

  677. he who has

  678. no money, come

  679. buy and

  680. eat, come

  681. buy wine and

  682. milk without

  683. money and

  684. without price.

  685. Why do you

  686. spend your

  687. money for that

  688. which is not

  689. bread, and

  690. your labour for

  691. that which does

  692. not satisfy?

  693. Listen diligently

  694. to me, and eat

  695. what is good, and

  696. delight yourselves

  697. in rich food.

  698. food.

  699. It is the

  700. one who, like

  701. the Samaritan

  702. woman at the

  703. well, has no

  704. payment, no

  705. righteousness of

  706. her own to

  707. offer, but who

  708. believes and

  709. receives the

  710. living water.

  711. That's who

  712. will be there.

  713. Are you

  714. thirsty?

  715. Have you come

  716. to Christ?

  717. another picture

  718. of the same

  719. answer is given

  720. at the end of

  721. this chapter.

  722. Nothing unclean

  723. will enter into

  724. this future, but

  725. only those who

  726. are written in

  727. the Lamb's

  728. book of life.

  729. The Lamb who

  730. was slain for

  731. our sins, who

  732. drank the cup of

  733. God's wrath so

  734. that we get to

  735. drink the cup of

  736. blessing.

  737. nothing.

  738. If you come to

  739. Jesus with no

  740. currency of your

  741. own, but if you

  742. thirst for true

  743. life and come to

  744. him to receive

  745. it, then your

  746. name is permanently

  747. written in the

  748. Lamb's book of

  749. life.

  750. So are you

  751. thirsty?

  752. Are you thirsty?

  753. Are you

  754. dissatisfied with

  755. what this world

  756. has to offer?

  757. Do you know

  758. that you have

  759. nothing to

  760. offer God as

  761. payment?

  762. And come to

  763. him and drink

  764. his forgiveness.

  765. If that's

  766. you, you

  767. will be

  768. satisfied.

  769. And second,

  770. how can we be

  771. sure he is

  772. coming?

  773. How can we

  774. be sure he is

  775. coming?

  776. The basis of

  777. our confidence

  778. has absolutely

  779. nothing to do

  780. with how

  781. hopeful you

  782. feel on any

  783. given day, in

  784. any given

  785. moment.

  786. It's got

  787. nothing to do

  788. with how you

  789. can track

  790. it according

  791. to the

  792. details of

  793. politics in

  794. the world,

  795. as some

  796. people try

  797. and do.

  798. You can be

  799. sure he is

  800. coming for a

  801. very simple

  802. but unshakable

  803. reason.

  804. He says he

  805. will.

  806. That's the

  807. basis of our

  808. confidence.

  809. He says he

  810. will.

  811. So the

  812. question is,

  813. I can break

  814. my word,

  815. but does God

  816. break his

  817. word?

  818. God, is

  819. he trustworthy?

  820. Did Adam

  821. and Eve die

  822. like God

  823. said they

  824. would if

  825. they refused

  826. to let God

  827. be God?

  828. Did God

  829. save Noah

  830. and his

  831. family when

  832. the flood

  833. came and

  834. destroyed the

  835. world?

  836. God?

  837. Did Abraham

  838. become the

  839. father of a

  840. great nation?

  841. Did God

  842. rescue his

  843. people from

  844. Egypt?

  845. Did he

  846. destroy the

  847. disobedient

  848. generation in

  849. the wilderness?

  850. Did he bring

  851. his people into

  852. the promised

  853. land?

  854. David?

  855. Did David

  856. become king?

  857. Did God's

  858. people go

  859. into exile?

  860. Did God

  861. bring them

  862. back from

  863. exile?

  864. Did the

  865. son of David

  866. come to

  867. earth?

  868. Did Christ

  869. die for our

  870. sins and

  871. then rise on

  872. the third

  873. day?

  874. Did God

  875. give his

  876. spirit to

  877. his church?

  878. Are people

  879. from all

  880. over the

  881. world being

  882. brought into

  883. his kingdom?

  884. Does God

  885. keep his

  886. word?

  887. Behold,

  888. I am

  889. coming soon.

  890. So what

  891. are we

  892. called to

  893. do while

  894. we wait?

  895. verses 7

  896. and 8.

  897. The one

  898. who conquers

  899. will have

  900. this heritage

  901. and I

  902. will be

  903. his God

  904. and he

  905. will be

  906. my son.

  907. But as

  908. for the

  909. cowardly,

  910. the

  911. faithless,

  912. the detestable,

  913. as for

  914. murderers,

  915. the sexually

  916. immoral,

  917. sorcerers,

  918. idolaters,

  919. and all

  920. liars,

  921. their portion

  922. will be in

  923. the lake

  924. that burns

  925. with fire

  926. and sulfur,

  927. which is the

  928. second death.

  929. Remember,

  930. only those

  931. who are

  932. written in

  933. the Lamb's

  934. book of

  935. life,

  936. who were

  937. slain for

  938. the sins

  939. of the

  940. world,

  941. will be

  942. there.

  943. But we're

  944. also left

  945. with a

  946. choice

  947. of being

  948. conquerors

  949. or being

  950. cowards.

  951. Will you

  952. conquer

  953. by crying

  954. out with

  955. the Spirit

  956. and with

  957. the Bride,

  958. come Lord

  959. Jesus,

  960. come.

  961. Or will

  962. you be a

  963. coward

  964. and not

  965. fight for

  966. this future?

  967. just drift

  968. along with

  969. the ways

  970. of this

  971. world.

  972. What does

  973. it mean

  974. to conquer?

  975. What are we

  976. meant to

  977. conquer?

  978. We see

  979. it in

  980. chapters 2

  981. and 3

  982. of Revelation.

  983. Jesus

  984. speaks to

  985. seven local

  986. churches

  987. and each

  988. of the

  989. churches

  990. has something

  991. that is

  992. threatening

  993. to steal

  994. their love,

  995. to steal

  996. their trust

  997. and their

  998. obedience,

  999. away from

  1000. Christ.

  1001. Every

  1002. single one

  1003. of them

  1004. has to

  1005. fight.

  1006. Some

  1007. were putting

  1008. up with

  1009. false

  1010. teachings,

  1011. some

  1012. were putting

  1013. up with

  1014. sexual

  1015. immorality,

  1016. some had

  1017. the appearance

  1018. of being

  1019. alive,

  1020. but they

  1021. were just

  1022. going through

  1023. the motions.

  1024. Some

  1025. faced

  1026. external

  1027. threat

  1028. and pain,

  1029. some

  1030. thought they

  1031. were rich

  1032. and had

  1033. all the

  1034. answers,

  1035. not

  1036. realizing

  1037. they were

  1038. poor and

  1039. blind and

  1040. naked.

  1041. Some

  1042. had lost

  1043. the love

  1044. and good

  1045. works they

  1046. had at

  1047. first.

  1048. Each

  1049. church has

  1050. something

  1051. threatening

  1052. to steal

  1053. Jesus'

  1054. bride's

  1055. affection

  1056. and trust

  1057. and obedience

  1058. away from

  1059. him.

  1060. So he

  1061. calls them,

  1062. listen to

  1063. me,

  1064. conquer,

  1065. fight,

  1066. God,

  1067. you will

  1068. receive my

  1069. reward.

  1070. To

  1071. struggle,

  1072. to love

  1073. and trust

  1074. and put

  1075. our hope

  1076. for the

  1077. future in

  1078. Christ alone,

  1079. that is

  1080. normal,

  1081. that is

  1082. the church,

  1083. that is

  1084. the Christian

  1085. life.

  1086. It's a

  1087. fight of

  1088. loving and

  1089. trusting and

  1090. obeying

  1091. Christ alone.

  1092. it does

  1093. not mean

  1094. being free

  1095. from

  1096. temptation

  1097. or from

  1098. trouble in

  1099. this life.

  1100. But the

  1101. question is,

  1102. are you in

  1103. the fight?

  1104. Or are you a

  1105. coward in just

  1106. going along with

  1107. the ways of the

  1108. world?

  1109. I think we

  1110. fight by

  1111. crying out,

  1112. come.

  1113. Come,

  1114. Jesus,

  1115. come now.

  1116. Christ

  1117. says,

  1118. I am

  1119. coming soon

  1120. and my

  1121. reward is

  1122. with me.

  1123. Whatever

  1124. you do

  1125. that moves

  1126. towards

  1127. this

  1128. future,

  1129. it's

  1130. worth it.

  1131. Bring

  1132. people

  1133. into your

  1134. kingdom

  1135. now.

  1136. Bring them

  1137. in,

  1138. God.

  1139. Make your

  1140. church holy

  1141. now.

  1142. We want

  1143. more of

  1144. heaven now.

  1145. We cry,

  1146. come.

  1147. Anything you

  1148. do that

  1149. moves towards

  1150. this future

  1151. is worth

  1152. it.

  1153. Let me

  1154. show you

  1155. an outstanding

  1156. man who

  1157. lived in a

  1158. way that

  1159. just showed

  1160. everyone around

  1161. him that he

  1162. was crying

  1163. out, come

  1164. now, come

  1165. Lord Jesus.

  1166. There's a guy

  1167. called John

  1168. Patton.

  1169. He was a

  1170. missionary in

  1171. Vanuatu in

  1172. the late

  1173. 1800s.

  1174. Just about

  1175. 20 years

  1176. before he

  1177. left for

  1178. Vanuatu

  1179. from England,

  1180. two missionaries,

  1181. John Williams

  1182. and James

  1183. Harris, within

  1184. minutes of

  1185. arriving on

  1186. the island,

  1187. were clubbed

  1188. to death

  1189. and then

  1190. eaten

  1191. by

  1192. cannibals.

  1193. people.

  1194. So when

  1195. John said

  1196. to his

  1197. congregation

  1198. he felt

  1199. called to

  1200. go to

  1201. Vanuatu

  1202. and a

  1203. concerned

  1204. elder in

  1205. the church,

  1206. Mr.

  1207. Dixon,

  1208. came to

  1209. him and

  1210. said,

  1211. they'll

  1212. eat you.

  1213. You'll be

  1214. eaten by

  1215. cannibals.

  1216. Mr.

  1217. Dixon,

  1218. you are

  1219. advanced in

  1220. years now

  1221. and your

  1222. own prospect

  1223. is soon to

  1224. be laid in

  1225. the grave

  1226. and there

  1227. to be

  1228. eaten by

  1229. worms.

  1230. I confess

  1231. to you

  1232. that if I

  1233. can but

  1234. live and

  1235. die serving

  1236. and honouring

  1237. the Lord

  1238. Jesus Christ,

  1239. it will make

  1240. no difference

  1241. to me

  1242. whether I

  1243. am eaten

  1244. by cannibals

  1245. or by

  1246. worms.

  1247. And on

  1248. that great

  1249. day,

  1250. my

  1251. resurrection

  1252. body will

  1253. rise as

  1254. fair as

  1255. yours in

  1256. the likeness

  1257. of our

  1258. risen

  1259. Redeemer.

  1260. He got

  1261. it,

  1262. didn't he?

  1263. When

  1264. you're

  1265. broken by

  1266. sickness and

  1267. the imminence

  1268. of death,

  1269. keep fighting

  1270. the fight of

  1271. faith.

  1272. The new

  1273. heavens and

  1274. earth are

  1275. coming.

  1276. They're

  1277. coming.

  1278. When you're

  1279. weighed down

  1280. by your

  1281. own

  1282. sinfulness,

  1283. keep

  1284. fighting.

  1285. Your name

  1286. is written

  1287. in the

  1288. Lamb's

  1289. Book of

  1290. Life.

  1291. Your

  1292. resurrection

  1293. is coming.

  1294. When you

  1295. are trying

  1296. to be

  1297. important and

  1298. desirable in

  1299. the eyes of

  1300. the world,

  1301. stop being

  1302. a coward

  1303. and going

  1304. along with

  1305. the world.

  1306. That's

  1307. easy.

  1308. when you're

  1309. feeling

  1310. alone and

  1311. afflicted by

  1312. division in

  1313. the church,

  1314. keep

  1315. fighting the

  1316. fight of

  1317. faith,

  1318. which will

  1319. usually mean

  1320. stop fighting.

  1321. the bride will

  1322. be beautiful

  1323. soon enough.

  1324. When you're

  1325. weary of

  1326. doing good,

  1327. keep fighting.

  1328. Your reward

  1329. is coming.

  1330. whatever you

  1331. do that

  1332. moves towards

  1333. this future,

  1334. it's worth

  1335. it.

  1336. It's worth

  1337. it.

  1338. Is this

  1339. future going

  1340. to define

  1341. this church?

  1342. Behold,

  1343. I am

  1344. coming soon.

  1345. what's the

  1346. best thing

  1347. that could

  1348. happen this

  1349. week?

  1350. Will you

  1351. pray with

  1352. me?

  1353. Will you

  1354. pray with me?

  1355. Father in

  1356. heaven,

  1357. thank you

  1358. that you

  1359. will one

  1360. day be on

  1361. earth and

  1362. we will

  1363. see your

  1364. face.

  1365. that we

  1366. won't just

  1367. have to

  1368. pray to

  1369. you,

  1370. but we

  1371. can talk

  1372. to you

  1373. face to

  1374. face.

  1375. Father,

  1376. thank you

  1377. for promising

  1378. such a

  1379. great future.

  1380. Lord,

  1381. we don't

  1382. deserve a

  1383. drop of

  1384. it.

  1385. We

  1386. deserve the

  1387. opposite,

  1388. but by

  1389. your

  1390. mercy,

  1391. by your

  1392. blood

  1393. alone,

  1394. you've

  1395. promised

  1396. it.

  1397. Thank you.

  1398. Father,

  1399. forgive us

  1400. for forgetting

  1401. what you've

  1402. promised.

  1403. Forgive us

  1404. for wanting

  1405. something else

  1406. more than

  1407. what you've

  1408. promised.

  1409. But thank

  1410. you for

  1411. being

  1412. determined

  1413. to bring

  1414. about what

  1415. you've

  1416. promised

  1417. no matter

  1418. how

  1419. unfaithful

  1420. we are.

  1421. Thank you

  1422. that you

  1423. will make

  1424. it happen.

  1425. Lord,

  1426. I pray

  1427. that you

  1428. make us

  1429. individually

  1430. and as

  1431. families

  1432. and as

  1433. the church.

  1434. Please help

  1435. us to be

  1436. defined by

  1437. a crying

  1438. outcome.

  1439. Lord,

  1440. we want

  1441. you now.

  1442. we want

  1443. the church

  1444. holy now.

  1445. We want

  1446. to be

  1447. free of

  1448. death and

  1449. the curse

  1450. now.

  1451. Give us

  1452. more of a

  1453. taste of it

  1454. now, but

  1455. Lord, come.

  1456. Come.

  1457. Lord, give

  1458. us a heart

  1459. that wants

  1460. others to

  1461. come into

  1462. your kingdom.

  1463. Come, Lord

  1464. Jesus.

  1465. Amen.

  1466. Amen.
