  1. So as a teenager, I thought my parents' role in life was to spoil my fun and restrict my freedom.

  2. Seriously, that's what I thought.

  3. When I went to university, I discovered a form of freedom, the freedom I had longed for,

  4. and I quickly realised it wasn't what it promised to be.

  5. It wasn't even what I wanted.

  6. And I realised then how much my parents had just poured love into my rebellious, foolish life.

  7. And from that point on, I've been really intentional in being a better son,

  8. in loving and honouring my parents in the way that they properly deserved.

  9. And I think it's like that, isn't it, for most things we value in life,

  10. things that are really at the heart of who we are.

  11. Whether it's relationships and roles, like husband or wife, or being a child, or being a parent, or a grandparent,

  12. being a father, being a mother, being a friend.

  13. All those relationships, or whether it's wider than that, whether it's a work situation,

  14. or a hobby, or music, or a career, or sport.

  15. Whatever it is that we value in life, whatever is at the heart of things for us,

  16. then it's natural that we want to get better at doing those things, at being those things.

  17. We want to grow.

  18. We want to mature.

  19. We want to thrive.

  20. We want to excel in the things that we do.

  21. And to get there, we then are quite intentional.

  22. We're quite passionate.

  23. Sometimes even a bit obsessive.

  24. Because these things are so important to us.

  25. So we train endlessly.

  26. We read widely.

  27. We learn as much as we can.

  28. We hang out with others who are ahead of us in skills and maturity,

  29. so we might learn from their wisdom and pick up their model.

  30. But I need to confess something to you this morning, as I stand here before you.

  31. that while I'm passionate to get better,

  32. to grow in almost every relationship I'm in,

  33. and every role I have in life,

  34. there have been too many times in my life

  35. when my passion and intentionality for growing in Christ

  36. has been dwarfed or eclipsed by other passions in my life.

  37. Too many times.

  38. This morning I want to challenge you,

  39. as I've been challenged this week in preparing for this morning,

  40. I want to challenge you to think about how passionate you are

  41. in growing in Christ.

  42. Because the Bible tells us very clearly,

  43. God tells us in his word very clearly,

  44. that you have been saved from sin

  45. to holiness.

  46. But are you passionate in nurturing the mind of Christ

  47. and demonstrating the mind of Christ

  48. in your actions,

  49. in whatever role or position you have in life,

  50. whatever relationship you're engaged in?

  51. Are you passionate so that practically

  52. you actually are getting better at serving Christ

  53. in a world that's hostile to him?

  54. Are you passionate in your determination to become like Christ

  55. in your attitudes and in your speech

  56. and in your actions?

  57. In confronting this reality,

  58. you may, in thinking about this,

  59. you may have to confront the reality

  60. that as we think through this series of God's words,

  61. you actually might have to realize

  62. that yes, well, I'm actually quite passionate about God

  63. and learning about God

  64. and I'm quite passionate about the Bible

  65. and using it and learning it.

  66. I'm quite passionate about the idea of salvation

  67. and being saved.

  68. I'm even quite passionate about being part of this local church.

  69. But here's the catch, you see,

  70. we can be passionate about all those things

  71. and not actually passionate about growing in Christ.

  72. Passionate about the peripheral things.

  73. That peripheral doesn't mean unimportant,

  74. but they're not central.

  75. And yet not passionate about the central thing

  76. of becoming like Christ.

  77. Growing up into Christ

  78. as a saved or died for person

  79. in the context of this church community

  80. and with the help of the Holy Spirit and the Bible.

  81. So again, you see,

  82. this is one of these words

  83. that God has spoken clearly about.

  84. Growing in Christ

  85. is not an optional extra

  86. for us Christians.

  87. even though it appears

  88. that that's what many Christians

  89. seem to think.

  90. Galatians 5, 13 to 26

  91. is built around a huge contrast.

  92. On the one hand,

  93. we have the flesh

  94. or what that means is

  95. it's not the physical flesh,

  96. it's the spiritual flesh.

  97. That is,

  98. the old, distorted,

  99. rebellious expression of self.

  100. And on the other hand,

  101. it's contrasted with

  102. the renewed,

  103. spirit-driven

  104. expression of self.

  105. And this contrast,

  106. it's a huge contrast,

  107. happens in the context

  108. of a key word here

  109. which is called freedom.

  110. Look at verse 15,

  111. 13 rather.

  112. For you were called

  113. to freedom, brothers.

  114. Called to freedom.

  115. And we need to understand freedom

  116. if we're to understand

  117. the contrast.

  118. So,

  119. the fact that freedom

  120. is a calling

  121. suggests

  122. it's a basic characteristic

  123. of being a Christian.

  124. Of being gospel-shaped people

  125. as we respond

  126. to God's grace

  127. in our lives.

  128. The same idea

  129. begins chapter 1.

  130. So look back to

  131. chapter 5.

  132. Look back to verse 1

  133. of chapter 5.

  134. It says there,

  135. for freedom,

  136. Christ has set us free.

  137. Freedom is the consequence

  138. or the natural outworking

  139. of being in Christ.

  140. A fundamental aspect

  141. of being a Christian.

  142. And the fact that

  143. there's repetition

  144. in that sentence

  145. for freedom,

  146. Christ has set us free,

  147. suggests

  148. and emphasizes

  149. that

  150. Christ has liberated

  151. us into freedom

  152. with the intention

  153. that we would experience

  154. and grow

  155. and enjoy

  156. the life of freedom.

  157. It doesn't just

  158. make us free.

  159. The intention is

  160. that we have a life

  161. of freedom.

  162. That we grow into that.

  163. My friends,

  164. this concept

  165. of freedom,

  166. this concept

  167. of growing in Christ

  168. is more than just

  169. a theory.

  170. it's even more

  171. than an expectation.

  172. It's a command.

  173. Like so many other commands

  174. in the scriptures,

  175. grow in Christ.

  176. But what does this

  177. freedom look like

  178. in the life

  179. of a Christian?

  180. Well you see,

  181. we think freedom,

  182. as I mentioned

  183. in my introduction,

  184. we think of freedom

  185. as having,

  186. as being free

  187. from restraint

  188. so that I'm

  189. able to do

  190. what I want to do

  191. when I want to do it.

  192. Freedom from restraint

  193. in how I express myself.

  194. But when you dig down

  195. into that notion,

  196. of freedom,

  197. it actually isn't possible

  198. because constantly

  199. we're bashing into

  200. things that restrict

  201. our freedom.

  202. I'm restricted

  203. constantly

  204. by my gender.

  205. To the extreme,

  206. I can't get pregnant

  207. and deliver a baby.

  208. I can't create

  209. another human being

  210. because I'm a bloke.

  211. I can't fly

  212. through the sky

  213. unassisted.

  214. I can't live

  215. under the sea

  216. unassisted.

  217. I'm constantly

  218. coming against

  219. restraints

  220. by gender

  221. and my humanness.

  222. So the idea

  223. of freedom

  224. that our society

  225. bandies around

  226. just doesn't work

  227. in practice.

  228. The Bible,

  229. on the other hand,

  230. is much more realistic.

  231. So true freedom

  232. as defined by God

  233. is the ability

  234. and desire

  235. to be

  236. what I was created

  237. to be.

  238. God tells us

  239. that humans

  240. were created

  241. to enjoy

  242. relationship

  243. with him,

  244. to enjoy

  245. relationship

  246. with one another

  247. as image bearers

  248. under God,

  249. to creatively

  250. enjoy this

  251. physical world

  252. full of all

  253. good things

  254. that he's made

  255. for us.

  256. But this freedom,

  257. we're also told

  258. in the scripture,

  259. was lost as a result,

  260. a consequence

  261. of rebellion.

  262. And then as the passage

  263. of Bible follows through,

  264. the story of the Bible,

  265. we're told then

  266. that the gospel

  267. restores true freedom

  268. again as a consequence,

  269. this time a consequence

  270. of Christ's rescue mission

  271. which undid

  272. the effects

  273. of rebellion

  274. and restored

  275. full relationship

  276. between God

  277. and his people.

  278. God's purpose

  279. is not just

  280. to make us free

  281. in the storyline

  282. of the Bible,

  283. his purpose

  284. for the world.

  285. God's purpose

  286. is not just

  287. to make us free

  288. but that we enjoy

  289. the life of freedom

  290. that we were created for,

  291. available to us now

  292. in Christ.

  293. And in the context

  294. of the letter

  295. to the Galatians,

  296. practically that meant

  297. freedom from slavery,

  298. the slavery of trying

  299. to earn acceptance

  300. with God

  301. through their own

  302. religious efforts

  303. and any notion

  304. of somehow or other

  305. having some sort

  306. of intrinsic goodness

  307. to bring to the table

  308. as we negotiate

  309. relationship with God.

  310. That's what we're

  311. set free from

  312. ultimately.

  313. The freedom

  314. we have in Christ

  315. is in being

  316. made acceptable

  317. to God

  318. and actually

  319. coming into

  320. what the Bible

  321. calls forever

  322. relationship

  323. with God

  324. by grace,

  325. by God's initiative

  326. alone.

  327. Not our performance,

  328. being good,

  329. keeping God's rules,

  330. doing religious things,

  331. but Jesus' performance

  332. on our behalf.

  333. And added to this

  334. idea of freedom

  335. is the reality

  336. of renewal

  337. by God's spirit.

  338. Verse 5,

  339. we won't stop

  340. for through the spirit

  341. by faith

  342. we ourselves

  343. eagerly wait

  344. for the hope

  345. of righteousness.

  346. The spirit

  347. is working

  348. daily within us

  349. to produce

  350. new gospel

  351. attitudes,

  352. new gospel

  353. desires,

  354. new gospel

  355. thinking,

  356. new gospel

  357. orientation

  358. towards heaven

  359. and being with Christ

  360. and being like Christ

  361. so that

  362. practically

  363. we grow

  364. in our reliance

  365. on what God

  366. does for us.

  367. in Jesus.

  368. And that

  369. is expressed

  370. then in radically

  371. different lifestyle

  372. and radically

  373. different actions

  374. and thinking

  375. and speaking

  376. on the outside.

  377. Growing in Christ

  378. is the freedom

  379. we were given.

  380. The command

  381. we were given.

  382. that also means

  383. then as we look

  384. further into this

  385. passage here

  386. that growing in Christ

  387. is more than a command.

  388. It's also a promise.

  389. Being called,

  390. verse 13 again,

  391. being called

  392. to freedom,

  393. to live the truly

  394. free life

  395. in Christ

  396. carries with it

  397. the promise

  398. that genuine

  399. commitment

  400. and struggle

  401. to express

  402. daily who we now

  403. are in Christ

  404. will actually

  405. result in

  406. growing

  407. Christ-likeness

  408. in holiness.

  409. Why?

  410. Because

  411. we have the

  412. spirit working

  413. for that same

  414. end within us.

  415. The renewing

  416. work of God's

  417. spirit within

  418. believers

  419. creates

  420. and actually

  421. helps or

  422. assists us

  423. grow

  424. in holiness,

  425. in Christ-likeness,

  426. in the mind

  427. of Christ,

  428. whichever term

  429. you want to

  430. use there.

  431. The desire

  432. and ability

  433. to be loving,

  434. obedient,

  435. worshipping

  436. servants of God

  437. as we were

  438. created to be.

  439. And that

  440. is true freedom

  441. in the Holy

  442. Spirit,

  443. in Christ.

  444. Christ.

  445. And what's

  446. the evidence

  447. of growing

  448. in freedom,

  449. of growing

  450. in Christ,

  451. growing into

  452. Christ-likeness?

  453. What's the

  454. evidence?

  455. We'll look at

  456. verse 13,

  457. 14,

  458. 15.

  459. The short

  460. answer,

  461. says Paul,

  462. one word,

  463. love.

  464. More

  465. extended answer,

  466. generous,

  467. purposeful,

  468. other person

  469. centred

  470. commitment

  471. to serving,

  472. building up

  473. one another

  474. in a

  475. Christian

  476. community,

  477. this church

  478. family.

  479. Love

  480. your neighbour

  481. as yourself.

  482. So familiar

  483. that old

  484. verse,

  485. isn't it?

  486. That little

  487. statement.

  488. That's so

  489. hard to do.

  490. So foreign.

  491. Did pretty

  492. well all of us

  493. here.

  494. many plants

  495. are propagated

  496. by taking

  497. a really

  498. healthy,

  499. vigorous root

  500. stock

  501. and grafting

  502. onto that

  503. root stock

  504. a cutting

  505. from some

  506. other species

  507. or plant

  508. that you

  509. want to

  510. grow.

  511. And the

  512. evidence of

  513. the success

  514. of that

  515. graft

  516. is that

  517. the cutting

  518. starts to

  519. grow.

  520. and ultimately

  521. produces fruit.

  522. Well,

  523. the evidence

  524. of being

  525. successfully

  526. grafted

  527. into Christ,

  528. and that's the

  529. language of

  530. John chapter

    John 15 chapter mention

  531. 15,

  532. grafted into

  533. the vine,

  534. the Lord

  535. Jesus.

  536. The evidence

  537. of being

  538. successfully

  539. grafted into

  540. freedom in

  541. Christ

  542. is growth.

  543. in displaying

  544. practically

  545. the mind

  546. of Christ.

  547. In other

  548. words,

  549. we're getting

  550. our life

  551. and direction

  552. from the

  553. rootstock,

  554. which is

  555. Christ.

  556. a desire

  557. and commitment

  558. to modelling

  559. the love

  560. and grace

  561. of God

  562. and Jesus,

  563. which we

  564. ourselves

  565. have received.

  566. We then

  567. want to

  568. pass it

  569. on.

  570. That's

  571. the evidence

  572. of that

  573. graft,

  574. being

  575. successful

  576. and being

  577. real.

  578. My friends,

  579. the authentic

  580. Christian life,

  581. the authentic

  582. Christian life

  583. is seen

  584. in the

  585. lifelong

  586. obsession

  587. and struggle

  588. to express

  589. and demonstrate

  590. who we

  591. are in

  592. Christ.

  593. Use a

  594. different

  595. picture.

  596. We're under

  597. new

  598. management.

  599. The Holy

  600. Spirit,

  601. according to

  602. Galatians,

  603. here we'll

  604. move into

  605. the next

  606. verses in

  607. a few

  608. seconds,

  609. the Holy

  610. Spirit is

  611. now our

  612. controlling

  613. passion.

  614. And daily

  615. our struggle

  616. is to

  617. overflow

  618. in that

  619. which reflects

  620. the mind

  621. of Christ

  622. mediated to

  623. us through

  624. the Holy

  625. Spirit.

  626. That is,

  627. to overflow

  628. in a desire

  629. to say

  630. yes to

  631. righteousness,

  632. to choose

  633. righteousness

  634. and to

  635. say no

  636. to that

  637. which reflects

  638. our old

  639. sinful,

  640. distorted

  641. self-expression.

  642. To say

  643. yes to

  644. righteousness

  645. because that

  646. reflects our

  647. new master,

  648. our new

  649. manager,

  650. our new

  651. owner,

  652. as it

  653. were.

  654. It

  655. reflects

  656. his

  657. character,

  658. it

  659. reflects

  660. his

  661. wishes.

  662. And so

  663. we want

  664. to say

  665. no to

  666. anything

  667. that's in

  668. competition

  669. with that.

  670. So the

  671. question then

  672. is,

  673. what will

  674. you cultivate

  675. and what

  676. will you

  677. kill off?

  678. In order

  679. to produce

  680. good fruit

  681. and heaps

  682. of it,

  683. a plant

  684. requires

  685. cultivation,

  686. purposeful

  687. cultivation.

  688. It needs

  689. to be

  690. fed,

  691. it needs

  692. to be

  693. watered,

  694. and it

  695. needs to

  696. have around

  697. about it

  698. anything that

  699. will compete,

  700. weeds,

  701. any other

  702. thing,

  703. plant around

  704. it needs

  705. to be

  706. removed so

  707. that plant

  708. will thrive

  709. and produce

  710. fruit.

  711. Paul's

  712. saying here

  713. for us as

  714. Christians as

  715. we think

  716. about growing

  717. in Christ,

  718. there can

  719. only be

  720. one

  721. controlling

  722. passion.

  723. either it

  724. will be

  725. the flesh,

  726. says Paul,

  727. our old

  728. distorted

  729. self-seeking,

  730. self-governed

  731. attitudes,

  732. desires,

  733. and thinking,

  734. either that

  735. will shape

  736. our pattern

  737. of living

  738. or

  739. our new

  740. spirit-driven,

  741. spirit-enabled

  742. attitudes,

  743. desires,

  744. and thinking

  745. and actions

  746. will drive

  747. us.

  748. they can't

  749. both be

  750. operating

  751. at the same

  752. time,

  753. says Paul,

  754. because they're

  755. totally opposed

  756. to one

  757. another.

  758. They're

  759. pulling us

  760. in different

  761. directions.

  762. That's why

  763. Paul uses

  764. towards verse

  765. 23,

  766. 24,

  767. 25 there,

  768. Paul uses

  769. the language

  770. of crucifixion.

  771. Crucify your

  772. flesh,

  773. says Paul.

  774. Now,

  775. that's a very

  776. violent word,

  777. and Paul

  778. uses it,

  779. I take it,

  780. because it

  781. demonstrates

  782. the ruthlessness

  783. with which we

  784. have to deal

  785. with ourselves

  786. in killing

  787. off anything

  788. that competes

  789. for our

  790. loyalty

  791. or threatens

  792. to shape

  793. us contrary

  794. to how Christ

  795. wants us

  796. shaped by

  797. spirit.

  798. That language

  799. doesn't resonate

  800. with us

  801. in 2019,

  802. does it?

  803. Who,

  804. for goodness

  805. sake,

  806. who crucifies

  807. themselves?

  808. We don't

  809. mind praising

  810. ourselves,

  811. but the

  812. language of

  813. crucifixion is

  814. not easily

  815. applied.

  816. We won't

  817. allow others

  818. to apply it

  819. to us,

  820. and we

  821. certainly

  822. don't want

  823. to apply it

  824. to ourselves.

  825. But here's

  826. the point,

  827. you see.

  828. Paul's issue

  829. here is if

  830. we're not

  831. growing in

  832. Christ,

  833. then we're

  834. allowing that

  835. space to be

  836. filled and

  837. shaped by

  838. attitudes,

  839. thinking,

  840. or actions

  841. which are

  842. opposed to

  843. living under

  844. Christ's rule

  845. by Christ's

  846. spirit.

  847. That's

  848. verse 17.

  849. So Paul's

  850. point is

  851. this,

  852. that our

  853. outward

  854. actions,

  855. our outward

  856. words,

  857. are an

  858. indicator

  859. of our

  860. inward

  861. character

  862. and actions,

  863. an indicator

  864. of our

  865. real

  866. controlling

  867. passion.

  868. See,

  869. we can

  870. say we're

  871. controlled

  872. by the

  873. spirit,

  874. but the

  875. acid test

  876. is,

  877. what do

  878. our words

  879. say?

  880. What do

  881. our actions

  882. say?

  883. What do

  884. our attitudes

  885. say?

  886. And it's

  887. not just

  888. about

  889. books

  890. ticking when

  891. we go to

  892. talk about

  893. growing in

  894. Christ.

  895. It's not as

  896. if we're

  897. just here,

  898. we've got a

  899. list of

  900. things,

  901. and these

  902. are all

  903. bad things,

  904. and these

  905. are all

  906. good things.

  907. So it's

  908. not as if

  909. we're just

  910. trying to

  911. tick all

  912. the boxes

  913. and change

  914. our behaviour

  915. so we've

  916. got all the

  917. right things

  918. in place.

  919. It's not

  920. just about

  921. that.

  922. It is about

  923. that, but

  924. it's not

  925. just about

  926. that.

  927. It's not

  928. just about

  929. trying to

  930. get the

  931. bounds right

  932. so we

  933. do more

  934. good things

  935. in life

  936. than bad

  937. things.

  938. It's about

  939. a process,

  940. it's about

  941. a pattern

  942. of living,

  943. it's about

  944. a habit

  945. of life,

  946. which is

  947. characterised

  948. by inward

  949. controlling

  950. passion.

  951. And there

  952. are only

  953. two possibilities.

  954. Let's have

  955. a look at

  956. them in

  957. verses 19

  958. through to

  959. 21,

  960. and we're

  961. just going

  962. to take

  963. a walk

  964. through

  965. them.

  966. It's

  967. interesting

  968. that when

  969. we read

  970. through

  971. these

  972. passages,

  973. and I

  974. make no

  975. comment here

  976. to Catherine,

  977. but we

  978. actually tend

  979. to read

  980. the works

  981. of the

  982. flesh

  983. quicker,

  984. and then we

  985. slow down

  986. when it

  987. comes to

  988. reading

  989. the fruits

  990. of the

  991. Spirit.

  992. I'm

  993. going to

  994. reverse it

  995. this morning.

  996. Verses

  997. 19,

  998. 3 to

  999. 21 is

  1000. the

  1001. expression

  1002. of a

  1003. life

  1004. dominated

  1005. by the

  1006. old

  1007. nature.

  1008. And I

  1009. want you

  1010. to notice

  1011. several

  1012. things as

  1013. we walk

  1014. into this

  1015. slowly.

  1016. That the

  1017. whole thing,

  1018. all of it,

  1019. I say,

  1020. is marked

  1021. by self-centeredness,

  1022. by divisiveness,

  1023. by aggressiveness,

  1024. by the

  1025. consumerist

  1026. relationships that

  1027. Paul mentions

  1028. in verse 15.

  1029. But if you

  1030. bite and

  1031. devour one

  1032. another,

  1033. watch out that

  1034. you're not

  1035. consumed by

  1036. one another.

  1037. So the

  1038. works of the

  1039. flesh are,

  1040. as it were,

  1041. a living,

  1042. breathing

  1043. demonstration

  1044. of that

  1045. very thing.

  1046. And as we

  1047. slow down

  1048. and dig

  1049. into this,

  1050. man,

  1051. it's

  1052. nasty.

  1053. The second

  1054. thing I want you

  1055. notice about

  1056. this list

  1057. before we

  1058. move into it

  1059. is not just

  1060. a remote,

  1061. random list

  1062. of characteristics

  1063. that sort of

  1064. bad people

  1065. somewhere out

  1066. there might

  1067. do.

  1068. Paul's

  1069. writing this

  1070. to the

  1071. Christians

  1072. in the

  1073. churches

  1074. in Galatia.

  1075. We can't

  1076. hold it

  1077. at arm's

  1078. length.

  1079. We've got to

  1080. engage with

  1081. it personally

  1082. and individually.

  1083. Is this

  1084. me?

  1085. Well,

  1086. let's have a

  1087. look at

  1088. verse 19.

  1089. The works

  1090. of the

  1091. flesh,

  1092. they're

  1093. evidence,

  1094. says Paul.

  1095. Sexual

  1096. immorality,

  1097. impurity,

  1098. sensuality.

  1099. There's the

  1100. first group,

  1101. verse 19.

  1102. A whole

  1103. range of

  1104. what?

  1105. Self-gratifying,

  1106. exploitative,

  1107. sexual expression.

  1108. And who's

  1109. at the

  1110. center of

  1111. that?

  1112. Me,

  1113. me,

  1114. me,

  1115. my needs,

  1116. my desires.

  1117. So

  1118. contrary

  1119. to the

  1120. way we

  1121. were created

  1122. to be

  1123. in our

  1124. expression

  1125. of self.

  1126. But it

  1127. gets worse,

  1128. gets more

  1129. personal,

  1130. verse 20.

  1131. Look at

  1132. that long

  1133. list going

  1134. through there.

  1135. And every

  1136. one of those

  1137. things describes

  1138. in part

  1139. something of

  1140. the endless

  1141. pain and

  1142. mess we

  1143. cause in

  1144. relationships

  1145. when we

  1146. make ourselves

  1147. the center

  1148. of life

  1149. rather than

  1150. God.

  1151. Idolatry

  1152. is acting

  1153. like I

  1154. am God.

  1155. Me,

  1156. me is

  1157. everything

  1158. and demands

  1159. that others

  1160. fall into

  1161. line with

  1162. me.

  1163. me and

  1164. if you

  1165. don't fall

  1166. into line

  1167. with me

  1168. then you

  1169. can expect

  1170. me to

  1171. do my

  1172. best to

  1173. take you

  1174. down.

  1175. Sorcery.

  1176. Well,

  1177. we might

  1178. think,

  1179. well,

  1180. that's

  1181. something

  1182. relegated

  1183. to the

  1184. olden

  1185. days as

  1186. well,

  1187. or pagan

  1188. societies.

  1189. Well,

  1190. sorcery,

  1191. when you

  1192. dig down

  1193. into it,

  1194. is people

  1195. trying to

  1196. manipulate the

  1197. lives of

  1198. others.

  1199. people

  1200. in

  1201. animistic

  1202. societies

  1203. they do

  1204. that with

  1205. special words

  1206. and special

  1207. potions and

  1208. special

  1209. incantations.

  1210. And personally,

  1211. I think we

  1212. Christians have

  1213. a very

  1214. sophisticated way

  1215. of doing the

  1216. same thing

  1217. in the context

  1218. of quasi

  1219. Christian

  1220. language.

  1221. So we have

  1222. special words

  1223. sharing and

  1224. fellowship.

  1225. The means by

  1226. which we

  1227. communicate

  1228. mistruths,

  1229. misrepresentations

  1230. of others

  1231. around us,

  1232. untruths about

  1233. others around

  1234. us.

  1235. Why?

  1236. Because we're

  1237. trying to

  1238. manipulate

  1239. relationships

  1240. and outcomes.

  1241. Enmity.

  1242. You might

  1243. disagree with

  1244. the sorcery

  1245. one.

  1246. That's fine.

  1247. I don't care.

  1248. But enmity.

  1249. You can come

  1250. with me on

  1251. this one.

  1252. Enmity is,

  1253. you can check

  1254. these words out

  1255. for yourself,

  1256. it's an

  1257. attitude that

  1258. assumes the

  1259. worst about

  1260. others and

  1261. is happily

  1262. content to

  1263. push people

  1264. into opposing

  1265. divided hostile

  1266. camps.

  1267. Strife.

  1268. A preparedness

  1269. to go to

  1270. war with

  1271. people,

  1272. with those

  1273. with whom

  1274. you disagree

  1275. because you're

  1276. so convinced

  1277. of your own

  1278. right and

  1279. your own

  1280. rights.

  1281. Jealousy.

  1282. Wondering what

  1283. God has given

  1284. to others and

  1285. been dissatisfied

  1286. with what God

  1287. has given to

  1288. us.

  1289. Fits of

  1290. anger or

  1291. rage.

  1292. Well,

  1293. that's really

  1294. just unleashing

  1295. ruthless

  1296. strategies to

  1297. try and

  1298. overpower or

  1299. blaster our way

  1300. through and get

  1301. what we want.

  1302. rivalries.

  1303. They come out

  1304. of continual

  1305. self-promotion,

  1306. continually

  1307. pushing my

  1308. profile at

  1309. the expense

  1310. of others.

  1311. Dissensions

  1312. and divisions,

  1313. acting to

  1314. get what you

  1315. want regardless

  1316. of the impact

  1317. on unity

  1318. and community.

  1319. Envy.

  1320. A bit like

  1321. jealousy.

  1322. It's the

  1323. attitude that

  1324. can't stand

  1325. by and let

  1326. others have

  1327. success that

  1328. you believe is

  1329. yours to

  1330. have.

  1331. Drunkenness

  1332. and orgies.

  1333. Well,

  1334. most commentators

  1335. think that's a

  1336. separate category.

  1337. I'm just lumping

  1338. it in here.

  1339. You can,

  1340. again,

  1341. do what you

  1342. like with what

  1343. you think I've

  1344. done.

  1345. But anyway,

  1346. it's sort of

  1347. when all that

  1348. sometimes fails

  1349. and we

  1350. sometimes look

  1351. for relief

  1352. and for

  1353. satisfaction and

  1354. comfort in

  1355. other things,

  1356. things other

  1357. than God.

  1358. And those

  1359. things are

  1360. often taken

  1361. up as an

  1362. overflow of

  1363. brokenness and

  1364. frustration in

  1365. relationships and

  1366. attempt to fix

  1367. them ourselves or

  1368. fix them with

  1369. something else

  1370. rather than

  1371. going back to

  1372. God and

  1373. repentance.

  1374. Now,

  1375. friends,

  1376. the last time I

  1377. said this

  1378. sentence I got

  1379. into a serious

  1380. amount of

  1381. trouble, so

  1382. here goes

  1383. again.

  1384. these

  1385. attitudes and

  1386. characteristics are

  1387. alive and well in

  1388. our church family

  1389. and thriving in

  1390. some parts.

  1391. We so easily

  1392. live with them.

  1393. We so easily

  1394. cultivate them by

  1395. actually engaging

  1396. with those who

  1397. want to give

  1398. expression to

  1399. these sorts of

  1400. things privately.

  1401. We have

  1402. conversations with

  1403. them and

  1404. thereby cultivate

  1405. them.

  1406. We give them

  1407. oxygen when we

  1408. should be saying

  1409. to one another,

  1410. no, stop.

  1411. We've got to

  1412. kill these

  1413. things off.

  1414. Otherwise,

  1415. they're slowly

  1416. conversation by

  1417. conversation killing

  1418. us off as a

  1419. church.

  1420. in contrast,

  1421. verses 22,

  1422. 23, and

  1423. 24,

  1424. the expression of

  1425. a life dominated

  1426. by our new

  1427. spirit-driven

  1428. nature.

  1429. That's the

  1430. overflow of the

  1431. mind of Christ

  1432. developing within

  1433. us, growing in

  1434. the life of

  1435. freedom, growing

  1436. in Christ,

  1437. cultivating the

  1438. fruit of the

  1439. spirit.

  1440. Notice here

  1441. there's only one

  1442. fruit.

  1443. It's not fruits

  1444. of the spirit

  1445. so that we

  1446. can sort of

  1447. cherry pick and

  1448. take the ones we

  1449. want and leave the

  1450. other ones and

  1451. sort of play them

  1452. off and say,

  1453. well, I've got

  1454. this one, I've got

  1455. patience and love,

  1456. so therefore I

  1457. don't need to worry

  1458. about these other

  1459. ones.

  1460. No, it's one fruit

  1461. of the spirit.

  1462. Together they

  1463. characterize what

1464. we ought to be as

  1465. Christians.

  1466. Christians.

  1467. And notice also

  1468. that they're not

  1469. just, again in

  1470. contrast to the

  1471. other ones, they're

  1472. not just a warm

  1473. fuzzy description of

  1474. what Christians will

  1475. sort of be

  1476. automatically by

  1477. virtue of being

  1478. Christians.

  1479. No, these things

  1480. are really hard

  1481. work to get a

  1482. hold of and to

  1483. develop and grow

  1484. in.

  1485. They're seriously

  1486. hard to cultivate

  1487. and call for real

  1488. radical change.

  1489. And generally we

  1490. need incentive to

  1491. change.

  1492. We need to believe

  1493. that the gospel

  1494. shaped life is

  1495. far more attractive

  1496. and beautiful than

  1497. where we are at

  1498. the minute.

  1499. That's why we will

  1500. be motivated to

  1501. change in large

  1502. part.

  1503. So again, the

  1504. question is, as we

  1505. see this contrast,

  1506. is how attractive

  1507. is our current

  1508. position as

  1509. opposed to how

  1510. attractive is this

  1511. spirit-driven,

  1512. spirit-controlled

  1513. place, the fruit of

  1514. the spirit.

  1515. Love.

  1516. Moving towards one

  1517. another and serving

  1518. people for their own

  1519. good without promise

  1520. of personal benefit

  1521. in return.

  1522. Joy.

  1523. Finding satisfaction

  1524. in God, not in

  1525. people's responses

  1526. to you.

  1527. Peace.

  1528. Being committed to

  1529. reconciling and

  1530. restoring relationships

  1531. for Ireland, being

  1532. committed to

  1533. destroying them.

  1534. Patience.

  1535. Being generous to

  1536. others when they get

  1537. it wrong, repeatedly.

  1538. Kindness, goodness,

  1539. faithfulness.

  1540. Demonstrating a steady

  1541. display of grace and

  1542. commitment to serving

  1543. others when you may

  1544. well have reason to

  1545. withdraw from them

  1546. because of their

  1547. failures.

  1548. Gentleness and

  1549. self-control.

  1550. Humility towards

  1551. others arising from a

  1552. very healthy self-awareness.

  1553. Ask yourself, my

  1554. friends, are you

  1555. growing in Christ?

1556. Is growing in Christ a

  1557. passion for you?

  1558. Do you think you've

  1559. arrived at an end

  1560. point, the end point

1561. that God has for you

  1562. simply because you are

  1563. a Christian, you've

  1564. been saved, you've

  1565. been delivered from

  1566. your sin, you're now

  1567. secure, you have a

1568. place kept for you in

  1569. heaven.

1570. Is that the end point

  1571. for you?

  1572. And so you live

  1573. easily without concern

  1574. to showcase the mind

1575. of Christ and grow to

  1576. maturity in Christ.

1577. And I ask each of you,

  1578. as I've looked at

1579. myself this week, and I

  1580. genuinely have looked

1581. at myself this week, as

1582. I do every week in

  1583. preparation, I want you

1584. to go back and revisit

  1585. the conversations you've

1586. had over the past week,

  1587. the past month, the

  1588. past year, and ask

  1589. yourself which

  1590. controlling passion

  1591. did you communicate

  1592. to the person you

  1593. were speaking to in

  1594. your conversation?

1595. Was it, did it sit

  1596. easily in this context

1597. of the fruit of the

  1598. Spirit?

  1599. Or would your

  1600. conversations be better

  1601. fit for verse 26?

1602. Friends, we need to ask

  1603. these tough questions

  1604. individually and as a

  1605. church.

  1606. The general health and

  1607. well-being of our

  1608. church, the authenticity

  1609. of gospel renewal, and

  1610. ultimately the honour of

1611. God stands or falls in our

  1612. answers to these questions.

  1613. Let me pray.

1614. Lord, your word bites really

  1615. deeply into us.

  1616. Forgive us, I pray.

  1617. Forgive me, I pray.

1618. For the times, oh so many

1619. times, far too many times,

1620. when I've lost passion to

1621. grow in you, but simply

1622. wallowed in the security I

  1623. have in you.

1624. Forgive us, Lord, when we

1625. are better described by verse

1626. 15 and verse 26 than we are

  1627. by verses 22, 23, and 24,

1628. the fruit of the Spirit.

1629. Forgive us for that, oh Lord.

1630. Give us a heart to repent.

1631. Give us a heart to go back and

  1632. revisit those conversations with

1633. the people we've spoken to and

  1634. correct them.

1635. In Jesus' name I pray.

  1636. Amen.
