  1. John chapter 13, starting at verse 31 of John chapter 13.

John 13 chapter mention John 13 chapter mention

  2. When he had gone out, Jesus said,

  3. Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him.

  4. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once.

  5. Little children, yet a little while I am with you.

  6. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you,

  7. Where I am going, you cannot come.

  8. A new commandment I give you, that you love one another.

  9. Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.

  10. By this, all people will know that you are my disciples,

  11. if you have love for one another.

  12. Simon Peter said to him,

  13. Lord, where are you going?

  14. Jesus answered him,

  15. Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward.

  16. Peter said to him,

  17. Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.

  18. Jesus answered,

  19. Will you lay down your own life for me?

  20. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  21. The rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.

  22. Let not your hearts be troubled.

  23. Believe in God.

  24. Believe also in me.

  25. In my Father's house are many rooms.

  26. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?

  27. And if I go and prepare a place for you,

  28. I will come again and will take you to myself,

  29. that where I am, you may be also.

  30. And you know the way to where I am going.

  31. Thomas said to him,

  32. Lord, we do not know where you are going.

  33. How can we know the way?

  34. Jesus said to him,

  35. I am the way,

  36. and the truth,

  37. and the life.

  38. No one comes to the Father except through me.

  39. If you had known me,

  40. you would have known my Father also.

  41. From now on you do know him,

  42. and have seen him.

  43. Philip said to him,

  44. Lord,

  45. Lord,

  46. show us the Father,

  47. and it is enough for us.

  48. Jesus said to him,

  49. have I been with you so long,

  50. and you still do not know me, Philip?

  51. Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.

  52. How can you say,

  53. show us the Father?

  54. Do you not believe that I am in the Father,

  55. and the Father is in me?

  56. The words that I say to you,

  57. I do not speak on my own authority,

  58. but the Father who dwells in me does his works.

  59. Believe me that I am in the Father,

  60. and the Father is in me,

  61. or else believe me on account of the works themselves.

  62. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  63. whoever believes in me

  64. will also do the works that I do,

  65. and greater works than these will he do,

  66. because I am going to the Father.

  67. Whatever you ask in my name,

  68. this I will do,

  69. that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

  70. If you ask me anything in my name,

  71. I will do it.

  72. That's the word of the Lord.

  73. Yeah, you take that, thanks.

  74. Thank you.

  75. All right, good morning.

  76. Axolotls are humanity's great hope of regeneration.

  77. Did you know that?

  78. Axolotls are humanity's great hope of regeneration.

  79. In fact, scientists have been cutting them up for centuries,

  80. you know,

  81. chopping limbs off and watching them grow back perfectly,

  82. chopping it off again,

  83. watching it grow back perfectly.

  84. And even before modern science got a hold of them,

  85. well,

  86. healers from all different groups

  87. actually got a hold of them too,

  88. and they thought they were magical

  89. because they could actually regenerate,

  90. not just heal,

  91. like if you chop one of our limbs off,

  92. we end up with a healed up stump,

  93. but they would actually grow the whole limb back.

  94. And they thought they were magical.

  95. And so,

  96. before modern science,

  97. healers have been rubbing some kind of axolotl smooch,

  98. I don't know how they made it,

  99. but they've been rubbing that into wounds

  100. in the hope that that would actually cure people.

  101. It didn't work.

  102. Quite painful,

  103. the axolotls.

  104. But what I want to suggest to you

  105. is that we see something in the axolotls

  106. that we crave.

  107. If we've,

  108. as a humanity,

  109. have been looking at them for thousands of years

  110. and envying something in them,

  111. there's something in them that we crave.

  112. that ability to regenerate,

  113. to repair perfectly,

  114. to seemingly live forever.

  115. And we want to live.

  116. We want to live.

  117. Our hopes and dreams

  118. form around our living,

  119. not our dying.

  120. Our efforts in this

  121. are actually focused on this world,

  122. here and now.

  123. Our moods are deeply affected

  124. by what happens here and now.

  125. we get upset when we're disappointed.

  126. We feel irritated with people

  127. who block our goals

  128. or don't deliver on what we want.

  129. We're critical of them.

  130. We struggle when life doesn't turn out

  131. the way that we want it to.

  132. We put so much effort in

  133. trying to engineer the circumstances

  134. so life does turn out

  135. the way we want it to

  136. and it does deliver the things

  137. that we want it to.

  138. We're talking about it.

  139. We're talking about it.

  140. We're talking about it.

  141. We're talking about it.

  142. We're talking about it.

  143. We're talking about it.

  144. Well, the disciples

  145. that Jesus is speaking to

  146. in this chapter

  147. were no different.

  148. They had a plan

  149. and an expectation

  150. of what Jesus would do,

  151. how he would be glorified,

  152. how he would rule,

  153. how they would benefit

  154. as his sidekicks,

  155. as his co-regents in a way.

  156. Their hopes were fully in him

  157. and what he could deliver to them

  158. right there and then.

  159. Not by going away,

  160. as he keeps saying,

  161. but by changing the here and the now.

  162. So Jesus' foot washing

  163. in the beginning of chapter 13,

  164. that was really disturbing to them.

  165. That was kind of turning things around

  166. on their heads.

  167. That wasn't what they were expecting.

  168. Jesus talking about going away

  169. and even dying

  170. was certainly not part of the plan.

  171. His talk of them abandoning,

  172. or him abandoning them,

  173. because that's how they interpret it,

  174. was devastating

  175. and even more so

  176. when he said

  177. they were going to abandon him.

  178. Mentally,

  179. they were seriously confused.

  180. Emotionally,

  181. they were in turmoil.

  182. They knew what they wanted.

  183. They knew what their hopes were.

  184. And they weren't actually

  185. the direction that Jesus was going in.

  186. There was this conflict.

  187. The more and more they trusted in Jesus

  188. and the more they listened to him,

  189. the more they realized

  190. that the way that he was viewing life

  191. in the world

  192. was so different from theirs.

  193. they were in turmoil.

  194. And Jesus

  195. stops at this point.

  196. He stops after saying to Peter,

  197. hey, you're going to abandon me

  198. in no time.

  199. Tonight,

  200. you're going to abandon me.

  201. Three times,

  202. you're going to say,

  203. I don't know you.

  204. Jesus stops at this point,

  205. recognizes the turmoil of their hearts

  206. and addresses it directly.

  207. And that's what we see

  208. in John 14, 1.

  209. Let not your hearts be troubled.

  210. Let not your hearts be troubled.

  211. And then he lays out three reasons

  212. why their hearts shouldn't be troubled.

  213. And each one of those three reasons

  214. is linked to the need for Jesus

  215. to go away to make it possible.

  216. So let's look at those three reasons.

  217. They're actually on the back of your bulletin.

  218. You can follow through with that.

  219. If you don't have Bibles,

  220. you don't know how to look through Bibles,

  221. then you'll actually get the Bible verses

  222. up on the screen.

  223. So you can follow that way if you prefer.

  224. But the first thing Jesus says to them is,

  225. trust me as I prepare the way.

  226. Let not your hearts be troubled,

  227. he says.

  228. Here is the time for trust.

  229. And here's the things you need to trust in.

  230. Trust me as I prepare the way.

  231. Now, as I speak about trust,

  232. I want you to understand that the Bible,

  233. the original Greek has one word,

  234. which can be translated believe or trust.

  235. So some of your Bibles will have believe

  236. and some will have trust.

  237. I'm going to use them interchangeably,

  238. just so you're aware of that up front.

  239. So remember that?

  240. Believe equals trust.

  241. So why trust?

  242. Well, I think this is a principle

  243. that we should all be aware of.

  244. And if we're not,

  245. then we should be now,

  246. that trouble is the time for us to trust.

  247. Trouble is the crucible

  248. in which our trust is actually purified

  249. and developed.

  250. And so trust is the thing

  251. that they need right now at the most

  252. when they really don't understand

  253. what's going on.

  254. What are we to trust in?

  255. Well, Jesus goes on to say

  256. in the second half of this verse,

  257. trust in God,

  258. trust also in me.

  259. Now, they're all over the concept

  260. of trusting in God.

  261. They understand that.

  262. They've understood.

  263. They've lived within the concept,

  264. been raised as another generation

  265. in the context of a religion

  266. that has been pursuing trusting God

  267. for thousands of years.

  268. They understand that.

  269. And they know how God works too

  270. in the sense that his plan

  271. has gradually unfolded

  272. bit by bit by bit.

  273. And this promise is becoming

  274. more and more real to them

  275. and more and more desperate

  276. in their own hearts

  277. for it to be realized.

  278. They understand what it means

  279. to trust in God.

  280. So what Jesus says here

  281. is actually really, really challenging.

  282. He says,

  283. trust in me.

  284. Trust Jesus personally.

  285. After three years,

  286. you think of after three years

  287. of living with Jesus

  288. and traveling with him,

  289. they've got a sense of

  290. who Jesus is like

  291. and how trustworthy he is.

  292. But Jesus is saying more than that.

  293. He's stacking their trust of God

  294. alongside their trust of him.

  295. So whether the coming storms,

  296. the challenges that are going

  297. to defy their expectations

  298. of how God's kingdom will unfold,

  299. they actually need to see Jesus

  300. for who he is.

  301. Not just another king,

  302. but the king of kings.

  303. And it's not just trust in Jesus,

  304. but he goes on to explain

  305. that it's actually to trust in Jesus

  306. to prepare the way for them.

  307. He goes on to say in verse 2,

  308. In my Father's house are many rooms.

  309. If it were not so,

  310. would I have told you

  311. that I go to prepare a place for you?

  312. And if I go and prepare a place for you,

  313. I will come again

  314. and I will take you to myself

  315. that where I am,

  316. you may be also.

  317. There's a bit of a picture

  318. of movement going on there.

  319. Jesus talks about going.

  320. And where he's going here

  321. is to heaven,

  322. where the Father is,

  323. via the cross.

  324. We've got to remember at this point,

  325. for us,

  326. we look back on this,

  327. we recognize that Jesus

  328. has already died on the cross.

  329. That's his history for us.

  330. But for them,

  331. it was future.

  332. So when he's saying going here,

  333. he's actually referring to him

  334. going to heaven via the cross.

  335. And his going to heaven

  336. via the cross

  337. is to prepare a place for us

  338. in heaven

  339. through the cross.

  340. And then he speaks about

  341. coming again

  342. to take us to himself.

  343. What is he talking about here?

  344. These people are troubled.

  345. His closest disciples are troubled.

  346. They're deeply distressed.

  347. And so he starts to speak

  348. about heaven.

  349. You could say the new heaven,

  350. the new earth,

  351. I'm keeping it down just to heaven

  352. for the sake of simplicity

  353. of expression.

  354. But what Jesus does

  355. to comfort them

  356. is he stops at this point

  357. and starts to describe

  358. heaven itself.

  359. and how his going

  360. actually prepares

  361. their way into heaven.

  362. Now,

  363. I'm going to suggest to you

  364. that when we think about heaven,

  365. there are a bunch of different ways

  366. we think about it.

  367. Rod's actually shared a few.

  368. There's a wedding feast,

  369. there's all kinds of different things.

  370. But I would say

  371. that the top three

  372. most common things spoken

  373. that people speak to me about

  374. that they're looking

  375. in terms of looking forward

  376. to heaven are these things.

  377. not necessarily in this order either,

  378. but to be reunited

  379. with my loved ones.

  380. This is a common thing

  381. that people talk about.

  382. Looking forward to being in heaven

  383. to be reunited

  384. with my loved ones.

  385. Whether it be my husband,

  386. my wife,

  387. my parents,

  388. my children.

  389. Some of us know the tragedy

  390. of seeing our children die.

  391. To be reunited with them

  392. is just such an attractive thought.

  393. Or perhaps,

  394. for you,

  395. it's to have an end

  396. to suffering.

  397. Whether it be personally

  398. within your own bodies

  399. and the promise

  400. that that body

  401. will be renewed

  402. into a body

  403. that will run

  404. and not grow weary,

  405. that will walk

  406. and never faint.

  407. That concept of actually

  408. being renewed in that way

  409. is a relief to you

  410. because you suffer

  411. in your body.

  412. You're seeing the ravages

  413. of time

  414. or disease

  415. affecting it.

  416. I know I'm,

  417. you know,

  418. some of you who are older

  419. will say,

  420. you know,

  421. I feel like I'm getting older

  422. and some of you

  423. who are older than me

  424. will say,

  425. you have no idea,

  426. you're spring chicken.

  427. But I feel like I'm getting older

  428. and I've shared with you before

  429. that I'd gotten to the stage

  430. a few years ago

  431. where I could go to bed

  432. feeling fine

  433. and I would wake up

  434. with an injury

  435. just from sleeping

  436. like a stiff neck

  437. or a sore back

  438. or my knee was aching.

  439. I can tell you now,

  440. a few years on,

  441. getting to sleep,

  442. I actually have to find

  443. the position

  444. where I don't feel discomfort.

  445. This is from a time

  446. when I can remember

  447. falling asleep,

  448. well,

  449. I can remember

  450. because my parents tell me,

  451. I fell asleep

  452. standing up

  453. in the doctor's surgery

  454. while my mum was waiting

  455. in the waiting room

  456. to go in.

  457. I fell asleep standing up.

  458. Not only that,

  459. I fell asleep on parade

  460. in the Army Reserves

  461. and I actually staggered

  462. into the guy in front of me

  463. and he held me up

  464. until the sergeant

  465. woke me up

  466. and got me back

  467. to my position.

  468. I used to know

  469. how to sleep standing up

  470. and now,

  471. what's going on

  472. with my body?

  473. This concept of actually

  474. having a renewed body

  475. is really attractive

  476. and if it's not that,

  477. if it's not the seeing

  478. my loved ones

  479. or the end of suffering,

  480. whether it be internally

  481. or what the world

  482. inflicts on me

  483. from outside,

  484. it's the concept

  485. of living in paradise.

  486. Yes, there is something

  487. better than Newcastle

  488. out there,

  489. the idea

  490. of living in paradise

  491. and again,

  492. as Rod opened up,

  493. there are a variety

  494. of different views

  495. on what that paradise

  496. should look like.

  497. Culturally,

  498. each culture

  499. has its own expression

  500. of what luxury looks like.

  501. Maybe it's for you.

  502. When we went to Tasmania,

  503. we sat in a nice hotel,

  504. Joe and I,

  505. it was great.

  506. Every time we went out

  507. the room,

  508. it seemed that they would

  509. come back in

  510. and the bed would be made,

  511. everything would be tidied up,

  512. there would be more chocolates

  513. on the pillow,

  514. more than we could eat.

  515. They only give you them

  516. one at a time,

  517. but after a while,

  518. you can have enough of those.

  519. What is luxury for you?

  520. Being provided with meals,

  521. being in a luxurious setting,

  522. a widescreen TV

  523. in the bedroom?

  524. Joe?

  525. No?

  526. Things like that.

  527. What I'm going to suggest to you

  528. is that all of these things,

  529. well,

  530. not the widescreen TV

  531. in the bedroom,

  532. that's not necessarily

  533. what's going to happen in heaven,

  534. but heaven will not be disappointing

  535. in terms of paradise.

  536. We will not be thinking of heaven

  537. and being disappointed

  538. by the state that will be in there.

  539. But if we focus on these things,

  540. we're missing the point of heaven

  541. that Jesus is trying to get across here.

  542. The focal point of this place

  543. is not the quality of the place,

  544. but the presence of our God.

  545. And until we understand that,

  546. and until we own that in our hearts

  547. as our ultimate value,

  548. to be in the presence of God,

  549. we're going to struggle

  550. and struggle

  551. and struggle again

  552. with what he delivers

  553. for us in life.

  554. But let me suggest it to you

  555. in these terms.

  556. Joe's a good cook.

  557. I love her cooking.

  558. Not so pleased that she's

  559. no longer milk and dairy,

  560. sorry, dairy and gluten intolerant,

  561. sorry, that she's dairy

  562. and gluten intolerant,

  563. but I love her cooking.

  564. Now, I could list a whole bunch

  565. of different things

  566. that I love about Joe,

  567. all the different things

  568. I'm benefiting from

  569. as her husband.

  570. But if they were the sum total

  571. of our relationship,

  572. what would that be?

  573. How would you judge me?

  574. A consumer of her.

  575. But to delight in her personally,

  576. that's what God is calling us to.

  577. He's calling us to a relationship

  578. where he delights in us personally

  579. and he invites us

  580. to do the same.

  581. The focal point of this place

  582. that Jesus is preparing for us

  583. is not the quality of the place,

  584. but the presence of our God there.

  585. So as we read these words,

  586. Jesus is saying,

  587. trust me as I prepare the way for you

  588. into the presence of God.

  589. The God who's trappings you love,

  590. but who is far greater

  591. and more worthy of your love

  592. than anything he's provided for you.

  593. Jesus goes on.

  594. His lesson isn't finished here.

  595. He goes on and says,

  596. don't just trust me

  597. as I prepare the way,

  598. but trust me

  599. because of who I am.

  600. Because of who I am.

  601. Now just understand here

  602. that when Jesus talks about himself

  603. being the way,

  604. he's talking about himself

  605. as the way,

  606. him personally being the way

  607. for us

  608. to come into relationship

  609. with God again.

  610. And as he talks about himself

  611. being the way,

  612. we discover that there are

  613. two misunderstandings.

  614. It comes in the context

  615. of two misunderstandings.

  616. Firstly, Thomas and then Philip.

  617. And if you have the ESV Bible app,

  618. then I'd encourage you

  619. to look up Thomas and Philip

  620. and look at how they're portrayed

  621. in the Gospel of John.

  622. They're not portrayed

  623. as the brightest people.

  624. They're not portrayed

  625. as the most enthusiastically

  626. trusting people.

  627. But I'm going to suggest to you

  628. that both Thomas and John

  629. ask questions

  630. that we need the answers to.

  631. So praise God for them.

  632. Perhaps you're that person

  633. in your small group

  634. or in your friendship circle.

  635. You ask the questions

  636. that seem stupid

  637. to everybody else,

  638. but even the intelligent people

  639. actually need to engage

  640. with the answers of.

  641. And let's look at Thomas.

  642. Thomas,

  643. he's straight away,

  644. as Jesus is talking about

  645. going and preparing a place.

  646. Thomas comes straight up

  647. with his question

  648. in verse 5,

  649. and he says to him,

  650. Lord, we do not know

  651. where you are going.

  652. How can we know the way?

  653. Thomas has a literal

  654. interpretation here.

  655. He doesn't know

  656. the destination

  657. or the way,

  658. so we can tell

  659. that he's sort of existing

  660. on this literal level.

  661. He's existing,

  662. he's thinking in the here and now.

  663. How is God engaging

  664. with my here and now?

  665. There's a saying we have,

  666. isn't there?

  667. Too heavenly minded

  668. to be of any earthly good.

  669. Well, perhaps Tom,

  670. you could say,

  671. was,

  672. Tom,

  673. that friends here,

  674. Thomas,

  675. was too earthly minded

  676. to be of any good.

  677. Jesus sees this

  678. and responds to him.

  679. He says in verse 6,

  680. Look what Jesus says here.

  681. I am the way,

  682. the truth,

  683. and the life.

  684. not the way

  685. in the sense of a signpost

  686. or a Google map search

  687. directions

  688. or simply the speaker

  689. of truth

  690. in a world

  691. where lies are so common

  692. or even the life

  693. in the sense of being

  694. an example

  695. of a good and moral

  696. and upright life.

  697. Jesus says

  698. he is these things.

  699. Jesus is the way.

  700. He doesn't simply

  701. show the way.

  702. He came from the Father,

  703. a place Jesus told Peter

  704. that he couldn't go to yet.

  705. And then by trusting

  706. in Jesus

  707. who died for us,

  708. we are now able

  709. to go with him

  710. back

  711. to the Father's presence.

  712. Jesus is the way.

  713. And Jesus is the truth.

  714. He is the word of God

  715. in human form.

  716. Not simply a messenger,

  717. but God personally

  718. declaring himself,

  719. revealing himself.

  720. revealing himself to us

  721. and showing us

  722. to ourselves

  723. at the same time.

  724. Jesus is the way,

  725. he's the truth,

  726. and he is the life.

  727. Jesus,

  728. what Jesus is saying here is,

  729. I have life within me.

  730. It's not something

  731. that can come and go.

  732. He's saying,

  733. I'm the source of life.

  734. Life flows outward

  735. from Jesus,

  736. richly and abundantly

  737. from him

  738. into everything else

  739. that exists.

  740. Jesus is the way,

  741. the truth,

  742. and the life.

  743. When he comes,

  744. when he encounters Thomas

  745. and he's very earthly thinking,

  746. the way that he sees

  747. of breaking that mold,

  748. of breaking that mold

  749. of thinking,

  750. is to lift him out

  751. into a bigger understanding

  752. of what's going on

  753. by understanding

  754. who he is.

  755. And he continues that

  756. with Philip

  757. because Philip

  758. has an issue as well.

  759. And Philip's kind of grappling

  760. with these things

  761. and hearing them

  762. and he's just going,

  763. oh man,

  764. this is just too hard.

  765. Like I said,

  766. you look him up in John

  767. and you'll discover

  768. that he's like a

  769. remedial learner,

  770. shall we say.

  771. And he said,

  772. oh look,

  773. show us the Father

  774. and it is enough for us.

  775. Do you know that sense

  776. of wanting more?

  777. As simple as Philip is

  778. in his asking this question,

  779. do you know that sense

  780. of wanting more?

  781. When things happen

  782. and you just think,

  783. man,

  784. what is going on?

  785. How is Jesus real

  786. if this is happening

  787. in the world?

  788. How is this,

  789. how is Jesus,

  790. my saviour,

  791. if this is what he's

  792. letting happen in my life?

  793. I could put up with it

  794. if I just got to see

  795. more of him.

  796. If I got to see something

  797. that convinced me,

  798. that just overwhelmed me

  799. and convinced me

  800. to carry on.

  801. Here's a man

  802. who is wanting more.

  803. But in the context,

  804. the context that he's saying

  805. that is,

  806. he's wanting more

  807. than Jesus.

  808. Jesus responds,

  809. he says to him,

  810. have I been with you

  811. so long

  812. and you still do not

  813. know me,

  814. Philip?

  815. Whoever has seen me

  816. has seen the Father.

  817. In verse 9.

  818. For Jesus to prepare

  819. their troubled hearts

  820. for what's to come,

  821. they need to understand

  822. what he is doing.

  823. And more than that,

  824. they need to be clear

  825. about who he is.

  826. Jesus said,

  827. I am the way,

  828. the truth,

  829. and the life.

  830. No one comes to the Father

  831. except through me.

  832. That's an exclusive statement

  833. because the personal God

  834. has come personally

  835. to rescue us

  836. back into

  837. a close personal relationship

  838. with him.

  839. There aren't other ways.

  840. There is only one.

  841. And he's there

  842. right before them,

  843. urging them

  844. to trust in him.

  845. So Jesus says,

  846. trust in me

  847. as I prepare the way.

  848. Trust in me

  849. because of who I am.

  850. And he goes on

  851. and finishes

  852. by saying,

  853. trust in me

  854. as you continue

  855. my work.

  856. Each of these

  857. points up to this point

  858. have actually been

  859. focusing on

  860. trusting in who Jesus is

  861. and what he's doing.

  862. At this point,

  863. we start to see

  864. how who Jesus is

  865. and what he's doing

  866. has a direct impact

  867. on us now.

  868. These truths

  869. aren't just simply

  870. propositional truths.

  871. They're not just things

  872. we hold in our heads

  873. and they make us

  874. feel warm and fuzzy.

  875. These are truths

  876. that actually shape

  877. how we live,

  878. how we act.

  879. That's what we see here

  880. and the word work

  881. is something that's worth

  882. understanding here

  883. and bearing in mind

  884. because even in these verses,

  885. these last few verses

  886. of this section,

  887. we actually get a bit

  888. of an understanding

  889. of what work is.

  890. So I'll give you

  891. a definition of work.

  892. In its broader sense,

  893. is doing the Father's will

  894. that the Father

  895. be glorified.

  896. So when work comes up

  897. in these verses,

  898. doing the Father's will

  899. that the Father

  900. be glorified.

  901. Let me have a look

  902. at what Jesus says

  903. in terms of continuing

  904. his work.

  905. In verse 12,

  906. Jesus says,

  907. Truly, truly,

  908. I say to you,

  909. whoever believes in me

  910. will also do the works

  911. that I do

  912. and greater works

  913. than these will he do

  914. because I'm going

  915. to the Father.

  916. Jesus' work

  917. is doing the Father's will

  918. that the Father

  919. be glorified

  920. and we're actually

  921. invited into that,

  922. into the same,

  923. to continue that.

  924. So everything

  925. from the words

  926. that he says

  927. to the things

  928. that he does,

  929. we read here.

  930. Everything

  931. from the words

  932. that he says

  933. to the things

  934. that he does,

  935. including miracles.

  936. Now that obviously

  937. raises a question for us.

  938. Does that mean

  939. that we should all

  940. be doing these kind

  941. of things,

  942. including miracles?

  943. So when we take on

  944. the works

  945. that Jesus was doing,

  946. do we get to do

  947. miracles too?

  948. I'm going to say

  949. that's a possible

  950. application

  951. of what's being said here.

  952. It's possible

  953. that what Jesus

  954. is saying is

  955. an outworking of this,

  956. as you do my work,

  957. that you will do miracles.

  958. But what he is

  959. definitely saying is

  960. that you

  961. will be doing

  962. the Father's will

  963. that the Father

  964. be glorified.

  965. We focus so easily

  966. and readily

  967. on the miracle aspect

  968. and that becomes

  969. such a point of focus

  970. for us

  971. because we're concerned

  972. about the here and now.

  973. We're not seeing things

  974. the way that God does.

  975. I don't want to

  976. write them

  977. totally out of the picture,

  978. but I do want to say

  979. to you

  980. that each point

  981. in which Jesus

  982. refers to his miracles

  983. as his works,

  984. those works

  985. have a purpose

  986. and that is

  987. that people might believe

  988. that Jesus

  989. is the one

  990. the Father sent.

  991. So they have a purpose

  992. in themselves.

  993. They point to Jesus.

  994. You don't actually

  995. have to do miracles

  996. in order to do that work.

  997. It's just one of the ways

  998. that that happens.

  999. May God choose

  1000. to use that again?

  1001. Possibly.

  1002. But definitely

  1003. we get a sense

1004. of what it actually means

1005. to do the Father's will,

1006. that the Father be glorified

  1007. as we look into

  1008. what works are

  1009. because Jesus goes,

  1010. he actually says here,

  1011. greater works than these.

  1012. How can there be

  1013. something greater

1014. than what Jesus has done?

  1015. How can there possibly

  1016. be something greater

  1017. than that?

  1018. Let's have a look

  1019. at how Jesus speaks

  1020. of doing work.

  1021. And in chapter 4,

  1022. verse 31,

  1023. Jesus tells his disciples

  1024. to do the work

  1025. of gathering

  1026. in the harvest.

  1027. In John 6,

    John 6:28–29

  1028. verse 28 to 29,

  1029. when the crowds

  1030. that he just fed

  1031. actually ask him

1032. what work should we be doing,

  1033. he tells the crowd

  1034. to do the work

  1035. of believing in him.

  1036. In John 5, 21,

  1037. Jesus tells his disciples

  1038. that the Father's

  1039. greater work

1040. is to raise the dead

1041. and to give them life.

1042. If we kind of just

  1043. sort of bring

  1044. all those things together,

  1045. what we get is

  1046. that the works

1047. that Jesus is talking about,

  1048. these works are greater

  1049. because from now on,

1050. they will actually be pointing

  1051. to the completed work

  1052. of Christ.

  1053. Jesus' work

  1054. will be completed.

  1055. So when they talk

  1056. about Jesus

1057. and they witness to him,

  1058. they're witnessing

  1059. to a completed package.

  1060. that place

  1061. is prepared

  1062. in heaven for us.

  1063. He's not going

  1064. to do it.

  1065. It is prepared.

  1066. It's done.

  1067. It's not like Jesus

  1068. has taken 2,000 years

  1069. to build your room.

  1070. The works are greater

  1071. because from now on,

  1072. they're pointing

  1073. to a completed work.

1074. When Judas left the meal

  1075. to betray Jesus,

1076. he set that final act

  1077. in motion.

  1078. And Jesus acknowledges

  1079. that in John 13, 32

  1080. where he says,

1081. Now is the Son of Man

  1082. glorified

1083. and God glorified in him.

  1084. Judas left

  1085. and set in motion

1086. the acts of that night

  1087. which would lead

  1088. to both his betrayal,

  1089. his sentencing,

  1090. and ultimately his death.

  1091. witnessing to Jesus

  1092. finish work

  1093. is the greater work

  1094. that we're actually

  1095. involved in.

  1096. And just as we

1097. close up on this passage,

  1098. I think it's really

  1099. important to look

  1100. at where Jesus

  1101. lands us

  1102. when he finishes

  1103. what he's saying.

  1104. He says,

  1105. he goes into

  1106. instruction on prayer

  1107. at this point.

  1108. And it's important

  1109. that we understand this

  1110. because doing Jesus' work

  1111. is only possible

  1112. in Jesus' strength.

1113. He says in verse 13,

  1114. Whatever you ask

  1115. in my name,

  1116. this I will do,

  1117. that the Father

  1118. may be glorified

  1119. in the Son.

  1120. If you ask me

  1121. anything in my name,

  1122. I will do it.

  1123. I'm going to suggest

  1124. to you that

  1125. the way that we

  1126. read these verses

  1127. shows that

  1128. there's a problem

  1129. in our hearts

  1130. in terms of

  1131. our own expectations.

  1132. I'll give you

  1133. a few different ways

  1134. we can read them

  1135. that demonstrate

  1136. a problem.

  1137. Firstly,

  1138. we can read them

  1139. and think,

  1140. hey, great,

  1141. a blank check.

  1142. I can ask

  1143. for whatever I want.

  1144. It's like,

  1145. think Aladdin

  1146. and the lamp.

  1147. Just rub that lamp

  1148. and I'm already

  1149. starting to think,

1150. okay, so what am I

  1151. going to spend

  1152. my wishes on?

  1153. We can read them

  1154. and think,

  1155. blank check.

1156. But for any of you

  1157. who have existed

  1158. in that thought

  1159. process,

  1160. even for long

  1161. enough to form

  1162. a prayer,

  1163. you will know

  1164. the second thing

  1165. that we react

  1166. to these verses

  1167. like,

  1168. and that is,

  1169. it doesn't work.

  1170. It's a great

  1171. promise on paper,

  1172. but it doesn't work.

  1173. I've tried it

  1174. and I didn't get

  1175. the answer.

  1176. It's because we're

  1177. thinking like the

  1178. scientist with the

  1179. axolotl,

  1180. chopping it off

  1181. and watching it

  1182. grow back,

  1183. chopping it off,

1184. wanting to find a way

  1185. of actually improving

  1186. our current existence.

  1187. Are we asking

  1188. that the Father

  1189. be glorified?

  1190. Are we asking

  1191. in the Son's name?

  1192. I'm going to suggest

  1193. to you another way

  1194. and this is probably

  1195. the way that,

  1196. we're kind of a

  1197. conservative evangelical

  1198. church,

1199. I think this is one

1200. of the ways that we

  1201. actually really struggle

  1202. and that is this,

  1203. I don't dare ask.

  1204. We're thinking,

  1205. okay,

  1206. whatever you ask

  1207. in my name,

  1208. this I will do,

  1209. the Father may be

  1210. glorified in the Son,

  1211. okay.

  1212. Yep,

  1213. okay,

1214. that's got to be true,

1215. it's there in the Bible,

  1216. I trust the Bible,

  1217. but I'm not ready

  1218. to trust the Bible

  1219. in action

  1220. so I don't ask.

  1221. Some things seem

  1222. too big for me

  1223. to ask,

  1224. some things seem

  1225. too presumptuous.

  1226. We may even

  1227. convince ourselves

1228. it's an act of humility

  1229. that we don't ask.

  1230. How sad is that?

  1231. Friends,

1232. we need to be thinking

  1233. like people

  1234. who are learning

  1235. to trust in God

  1236. just like the disciples

  1237. were.

  1238. Thinking like people

  1239. who that trust

  1240. is actually beginning

1241. to develop in our lives.

  1242. Thinking like people

  1243. who just long,

  1244. love to see

  1245. who Jesus is

  1246. in his word,

  1247. how God reveals

  1248. himself to be

  1249. and look at,

  1250. take those promises

  1251. that he makes

  1252. for us seriously

  1253. and start to

  1254. want to see

  1255. those things

  1256. happen.

  1257. I think we need

  1258. to pray

  1259. accordingly.

  1260. We need to pray

  1261. big prayers.

  1262. Let God

  1263. sort out

  1264. how he's going

  1265. to deal with it.

  1266. There's no prayer

  1267. that gets no answer.

  1268. Every prayer

  1269. gets an answer.

1270. It may not be the answer

  1271. that you've envisaged,

  1272. but pray big prayers.

  1273. Friends,

  1274. don't shrink

  1275. this promise down.

  1276. Don't empty

  1277. of the extravagance

  1278. of the invitation.

  1279. Ask.

  1280. And be reshaped

  1281. by whatever answer

  1282. you get.

  1283. Ask again.

  1284. Let me say

  1285. in conclusion

  1286. that

  1287. if you look

  1288. at these verses,

  1289. they're a call

  1290. to trust

  1291. in the context

  1292. of troubled minds,

  1293. troubled hearts.

  1294. Our hearts,

  1295. when they expect

  1296. something in this world

  1297. and they don't get

  1298. what we hope for,

  1299. our hearts

  1300. as they're gradually

  1301. being transformed

  1302. to expect

  1303. and not only expect,

  1304. but to actually

  1305. treasure

  1306. what God says

1307. we should be hoping for.

  1308. Hearts that value

  1309. the fact

  1310. that Jesus

  1311. had to go away

  1312. to prepare

  1313. a place for us.

  1314. and that path

  1315. took him

  1316. to the cross

  1317. and through the cross

  1318. to heaven.

1319. That he had to go

  1320. to become

  1321. the way for us.

1322. That he had to go

  1323. to provide

  1324. the greater works

1325. for us to be doing

  1326. even now.

  1327. And friends,

  1328. when you feel

  1329. that conflict

  1330. in your hearts

  1331. and that life

1332. is just not turning out

  1333. how it should,

  1334. recognize

  1335. that troubled heart

  1336. as the point

  1337. at which you can

  1338. learn more deeply

  1339. these truths.

  1340. Learn more deeply

  1341. to trust in Jesus.

  1342. To lean on him

  1343. instead of the kingdoms

  1344. we're so

  1345. busily building.

  1346. To see the opportunities

  1347. to do his work

  1348. rather than our own.

1349. To learn to long for

  1350. the joy

1351. of being in his presence

  1352. when our work

  1353. is finally finished.

  1354. Let me pray.

  1355. Father God,

  1356. I've got to confess

  1357. that

  1358. I can't value enough

  1359. what you've done.

  1360. I can't appreciate it

1361. the way that I should

1362. because I am so conflicted.

  1363. We are.

  1364. We know

  1365. life in this world.

  1366. There's so many

  1367. good things about

1368. the world that you've made

  1369. and we just keep

  1370. tripping up

  1371. and making those things

  1372. a main thing

  1373. and forgetting

  1374. the goodness of you,

  1375. the one who provided

  1376. all things.

  1377. Lord,

  1378. we pray

1379. that you would show us

  1380. the points of conflict

  1381. in our lives

  1382. where perhaps we're not

  1383. even seeing any conflict

  1384. whatsoever.

  1385. We're just easily

  1386. just giving ourselves

  1387. over to building

  1388. our own kingdoms.

  1389. Lord,

  1390. bring us back

  1391. to building your kingdom.

  1392. bring us back

  1393. through the sure knowledge

  1394. that you loved us

  1395. so much

  1396. that you brought us

  1397. into your kingdom

  1398. even though we are

  1399. as ignorant

  1400. as we are now.

  1401. Lord,

  1402. we thank you

  1403. and praise you

  1404. and we long

  1405. for your return

  1406. and in the meantime,

  1407. Lord,

  1408. grow us

  1409. in appreciation

  1410. of who you are.

  1411. Amen.

  1412. Amen.

  1413. Amen.

  1414. Amen.

  1415. Amen.

  1416. Amen.
