  1. That might help.

  2. Okay.

  3. Well, Christmas time has the power to bring peace, doesn't it?

  4. I'm amazed how willing strangers are to talk to me at Christmas time

  5. when any other time of year barriers are up.

  6. But at Christmas, people seem to put them to the side

  7. and they're willing to chat.

  8. Neighbours down the road are much more willing to smile and give a wave,

  9. maybe even pause to have a chat.

  10. But going through the checkout at Woolies,

  11. I have way more conversation than I do all year round.

  12. And for the record, I'm not speaking to the self-checkout machine.

  13. Driving on Christmas Day itself,

  14. people flash their lights and beep their horns not out of road rage.

  15. Christmas has the power to bring peace.

  16. In the workplace, whatever frustrations have happened during the year,

  17. people seem to put them aside and come together for the Christmas party.

  18. It's a time of bonding, team bonding.

  19. Even family often put long-standing arguments to the side

  20. and go to great efforts to be together at Christmas.

  21. Even on a world scale, Christmas can bring peace.

  22. On Christmas Eve, through the Boxing Day in 1914, during World War I,

  23. many of the British and German soldiers put down their guns

  24. and put them to the side.

  25. Trusting each other enough to meet in no man's land,

  26. to greet each other, to exchange food and even play soccer, apparently.

  27. I wish that became a Christmas tradition, to play soccer.

  28. I love soccer.

  29. Cricket's pretty good as well.

  30. Christmas time can even bring peace during war.

  31. That's incredible.

  32. We put aside our differences.

  33. We put to one side our arguments, even our guns.

  34. Christmas has the power to bring peace.

  35. And it's wonderful.

  36. But how long does it last?

  37. Do strangers at the shops maintain their peace till the new year

  38. or is it wrecked by the Boxing Day sales?

  39. Does your family make it through the Christmas meal

  40. before those arguments explode back onto the surface?

  41. The guns broke the silence come December 27th in World War I

  42. and the war blasted on for another four years.

  43. Christmas does have the power to bring peace.

  44. It really does.

  45. And it's special for that.

  46. But it's fragile.

  47. And it doesn't last.

  48. And we all crave this peace, don't we?

  49. I know I do.

  50. We crave peace because life is so good

  51. when in the home and in our world there is peace.

  52. It is so sweet.

  53. But putting our differences and arguments to the side for a few days

  54. just doesn't get to the heart

  55. of what's causing the division in the first place.

  56. The very good news

  57. that God's heavenly messengers proclaim when Jesus was born

  58. is that the peace you crave, the peace we crave,

  59. God promises to give and much more.

  60. I just want to focus on those words of the angels in verse 14.

  61. I want to say three quick things

  62. about this true and lasting peace that God offers you.

  63. The first thing is that the main peace that you and I need

  64. is peace with God.

  65. When God's Son was born into the world,

  66. God who dwells in the highest heaven

  67. came near to us

  68. so that we can know Him.

  69. No one was expecting God Himself to come.

  70. No one.

  71. No one was seeking God

  72. but He came to us.

  73. This gap

  74. needed to be bridged

  75. but God doesn't demand you

  76. to become a better person

  77. before He will talk to you.

  78. Christmas

  79. is celebrating that God

  80. came to us

  81. and bridged that gap.

  82. Have you seen the movie Lion?

  83. Big spoiler alert here.

  84. The only time in the talk

  85. you can put fingers in your ears

  86. if you don't want the movie to be spoiled

  87. because I'm going to give the whole plot.

  88. I love the movie.

  89. It's a powerful movie.

  90. It's based on a true story

  91. of Saru Brearley

  92. who was born in India

  93. but was accidentally separated

  94. from his family

  95. when he was only five years old.

  96. Later he was adopted

  97. by Australian parents

  98. and grew up in Tasmania.

  99. Now even though

  100. he had a loving family

  101. in Australia,

  102. even though he did well at school

  103. and got into uni,

  104. even though he had friends

  105. and a girlfriend,

  106. during his twenties

  107. he was still restless

  108. on the inside.

  109. He didn't have any peace inside

  110. not knowing who he was.

  111. So driven

  112. was he to find

  113. his biological mum.

  114. He devoted himself

  115. to scanning Google Earth

  116. online

  117. all over India

  118. which is no small place.

  119. All he had was memories

  120. of these landmarks

  121. that he was searching for.

  122. He spent months

  123. searching

  124. and against the odds

  125. he found it.

  126. He found those landmarks

  127. and he travels

  128. across the world

  129. and the moment comes

  130. when he is reunited

  131. with his mum

  132. and his sister.

  133. It's a powerful moment.

  134. When it comes

  135. to our relationship

  136. with God

  137. we all have

  138. a deep

  139. inner

  140. restlessness

  141. that can only

  142. be satisfied

  143. when we are reunited

  144. with God.

  145. Nothing else

  146. will satisfy it.

  147. But unlike Saru

  148. it's not us

  149. searching for God.

  150. our lack

  151. of searching

  152. is part of the problem.

  153. The good news

  154. of Jesus

  155. coming to Earth

  156. is that God

  157. humbled himself

  158. to search for you.

  159. The main peace

  160. that your heart

  161. and my heart

  162. needs

  163. is to be

  164. reunited

  165. with God.

  166. Second,

  167. God gives us peace

  168. not by putting

  169. our differences

  170. to one side

  171. but by dealing

  172. with the problem

  173. that stands

  174. between us.

  175. I don't know

  176. about you

  177. but I'm going

  178. to assume

  179. you're similar

  180. to me.

  181. There's certain

  182. topics in our

  183. families that

  184. we all kind of

  185. agree that

  186. you just don't

  187. talk about.

  188. If anyone

  189. even comes

  190. close to that

  191. topic

  192. the tension

  193. in the room

  194. just builds

  195. until it

  196. either explodes

  197. or someone

  198. makes a joke

  199. to move

  200. the conversation

  201. on.

  202. But God

  203. has a very

  204. different way

  205. of making

  206. peace.

  207. He doesn't

  208. ignore our

  209. differences.

  210. He takes

  211. on our

  212. differences

  213. himself.

  214. Born as a

  215. human being

  216. he deals

  217. with the

  218. barriers

  219. to peace.

  220. He doesn't

  221. just leave

  222. us in

  223. ignorance

  224. of what

  225. God is

  226. like

  227. but he

  228. becomes a

  229. human being

  230. so that

  231. when you

  232. read the

  233. story of

  234. Jesus

  235. you can

  236. see God

  237. in action

  238. so that

  239. you can

  240. get to

  241. know him.

  242. He doesn't

  243. just overlook

  244. our

  245. offenses

  246. the things

  247. that we've

  248. done that

  249. have offended

  250. God

  251. but Jesus

  252. himself

  253. deals

  254. with that

  255. offense

  256. when later

  257. as a

  258. man

  259. he chooses

  260. to die

  261. on a

  262. cross.

  263. Jesus

  264. alone

  265. can give

  266. you peace

  267. because he

  268. doesn't put

  269. the barriers

  270. to peace

  271. to one

  272. side

  273. he deals

  274. with them

  275. himself.

  276. He takes

  277. them on.

  278. The last

  279. thing I want

  280. to say

  281. about this

  282. peace

  283. is that

  284. when we

  285. appreciate

  286. God's

  287. love

  288. in sending

  289. Jesus

  290. to give

  291. us this

  292. peace

  293. when we

  294. love that

  295. when we

  296. cherish

  297. it

  298. that's

  299. the very

  300. power

  301. to bring

  302. true and

  303. lasting

  304. peace

  305. into our

  306. families

  307. and into

  308. our

  309. world.

  310. Let me

  311. ask you

  312. what

  313. difference

  314. do you

  315. think

  316. it would

  317. make

  318. if in

  319. your

  320. family

  321. and in

  322. the

  323. world

  324. instead

  325. of

  326. fighting

  327. and

  328. instead

  329. of

  330. pretending

  331. the

  332. differences

  333. aren't

  334. there

  335. what

  336. difference

  337. do you

  338. think

  339. it would

  340. make

  341. if

  342. people

  343. humbled

  344. themselves

  345. even to

  346. the point

  347. of losing

  348. out

  349. themselves

  350. because they

  351. want peace

  352. so much

  353. what

  354. difference

  355. do you

  356. think it

  357. would make

  358. if we

  359. loved

  360. God's

  361. way of

  362. peace

  363. I think

  364. it would

  365. make all

  366. the

  367. difference

  368. in the

  369. world

  370. glory

  371. to God

  372. in the

  373. highest

  374. heaven

  375. and on

  376. earth

  377. peace

  378. among

  379. those

  380. with whom

  381. he is

  382. pleased

  383. this is

  384. good

  385. news

  386. the

  387. person

  388. God is

  389. pleased

  390. with

  391. is the

  392. person

  393. who

  394. craves

  395. true

  396. and

  397. lasting

  398. peace

  399. peace

  400. it's

  401. the

  402. person

  403. who

  404. sees

  405. their

  406. own

  407. inability

  408. to

  409. create

  410. that

  411. peace

  412. who

  413. sees

  414. the

  415. inability

  416. of the

  417. world

  418. to

  419. create

  420. that

  421. peace

  422. it is

  423. the

  424. person

  425. who

  426. sees

  427. Jesus

  428. and

  429. celebrates

  430. that by

  431. this

  432. one

  433. man

  434. God

  435. freely

  436. gives

  437. this

  438. peace

  439. if

  440. you

  441. don't

  442. yet

  443. know

  444. this

  445. peace

  446. with

  447. God

  448. why

  449. don't

  450. you

  451. resolve

  452. in

  453. 2020

  454. to

  455. ask

  456. God

  457. to

  458. show

  459. you

  460. to

  461. give

  462. it

  463. to

  464. you

  465. it's

  466. the

  467. best

  468. Christmas

  469. time

  470. does

  471. have

  472. the

  473. power

  474. to

  475. bring

  476. peace

  477. and

  478. it's

  479. really

  480. nice

  481. for

  482. what

  483. it

  484. is

  485. it's

  486. really

  487. nice

  488. but

  489. Jesus

  490. alone

  491. has

  492. the

  493. power

  494. to

  495. give

  496. you

  497. true

  498. and

  499. lasting

  500. peace

  501. peace

  502. with

  503. God

  504. that

  505. overflows

  506. that

  507. will

  508. bring

  509. peace

  510. in

  511. our

  512. families

  513. and

  514. our

  515. world

  516. and

  517. that's

  518. a

  519. really

  520. good

  521. reason

  522. to

  523. celebrate

  524. and

  525. have

  526. joy

  527. not

  528. just

  529. at

  530. Christmas

  531. time

  532. but

  533. forever

  534. and

  535. our

  536. hearts

  537. long

  538. for

  539. peace

  540. please

  541. give

  542. it

  543. to

  544. each

  545. one

  546. of

  547. us

  548. here

  549. in

  550. this

  551. room

  552. today

  553. in

  554. Jesus

  555. name

  556. I

  557. pray

  558. Amen

  559. thanks

  560. for

  561. listening
