  1. 15 verse 18. So if you've got one of the church Bibles, the black ones, which are on the back

  2. desk if you don't have one, it's page 902.

  3. John 15 verse 18.

    John 15:18

  4. If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.

  5. If you are of the world, the world would love you as its own.

  6. But because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

  7. Remember the word that I said to you, a servant is not greater than his master.

  8. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.

  9. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.

  10. But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me.

  11. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.

  12. Whoever hates me hates my father also.

  13. If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin.

  14. But now they have seen and hated both me and my father.

  15. But the word that is written in their law must be fulfilled.

  16. They hated me without a cause.

  17. But when the helper comes, whom I will send to you from the father, the spirit of truth, who proceeds from the father, he will bear witness about me.

  18. And you also will bear witness because you have been with me from the beginning.

  19. I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away.

  20. They will put you out of the synagogues.

  21. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.

  22. And they will do these things because they have not known the father nor me.

  23. But I have said these things to you that when their hour comes, you may remember that I told them to you.

  24. Amen.

  25. Well, I'm often known around the traps here as Eeyore.

  26. I reckon I see the miserable side of life.

  27. Well, the mantle today has been translated and shifted onto Rob.

  28. So I'm positively euphoric compared to Rob's introduction.

  29. We all want to be accepted, don't we?

  30. We all want to be welcomed.

  31. We all want to be at ease in whatever context we find ourselves in.

  32. That's what it is to be relational beings, isn't it?

  33. Nobody wants to be isolated, rejected, certainly not despised and hated.

  34. And I think one of the things I really appreciate about being Australian is that Australia gets that by and large.

  35. So as Australians, we sense that racism and sexism is bad.

  36. And that a commitment to multiculturalism is good.

  37. But we're slowly as a nation recognizing past wrongs to indigenous people and working to get some real healing.

  38. We're developing disability support programs, valuing people for who they are rather than what they can or cannot do.

  39. And we rightly applaud people and programs designed to promote unity among Australians.

  40. But mixed in among that, I need to tell you this morning, if you haven't already worked out, there are those who use the language of unity, but their design is altogether different.

  41. Their design is actually to promote disharmony and exclusion and isolation.

  42. Two words dominate our culture at the moment.

  43. The words inclusivity and the word tolerance.

  44. That is, these two words both are banded around as being open and accepting of all views.

  45. Especially they're used in terms of being open and accepting of all gender expressions, all sexual expression.

  46. As I say, it's the language of inclusiveness.

  47. But behind that apparent language of unity is, dare I say, a ruthless agenda to silence any critique of moves to redefine personhood, to redefine identity through this new thing called gender fluidity.

  48. Unrestricted sexual expression.

  49. Unrestricted sexual expression.

  50. And Christians bear the brunt of this attack.

  51. And the attack aims to remove from our society, from our culture, any reference or influence from historic, the ethic of historic biblical Christianity.

  52. And replace it with an ethic of, anything goes, driven by my imagination.

  53. A couple of examples.

  54. Two weeks ago, Monty Python team member Terry Jones died.

  55. The response to his death, a massive celebration of his life.

  56. Focused in one line, his most famous, or as I would say, infamous line.

  57. He's not the Messiah.

  58. He's just a very naughty boy.

  59. From the Life of Brian movie.

  60. Now that whole movie is called a satire, but I think it's just hit.

  61. It just ridicules from beginning to end the life and death of Jesus.

  62. It was always and remains one of the most popular movies ever produced.

  63. This week, John McEnroe published what can only be called a vitriolic YouTube directed at Margaret Court.

  64. Begging her tennis fraternity not to acknowledge her Grand Slam victory 50 years ago.

  65. He called her, among other things, a despicable homophobe.

  66. Inutterably offensive.

  67. Why?

  68. Because she spoke against homosexuality.

  69. And the irony for me was, you have this vitriolic outpouring from McEnroe, which I would call hate speech.

  70. And it's applauded Margaret Court, demonized.

  71. And again this week, Israel Folau back in the news.

  72. He's been forced to sign a contract and promised that he would make no public comment as a Christian in order to play rugby league again.

  73. And the Catalan Dragons team that have signed him have been absolutely pilloried in the press this week.

  74. While only two hours later, after the news broke of him being signed by the Catalan Dragons,

  75. the Wigan Warriors and another team in the same comp advertised that their next game was going to be dedicated to gay pride.

  76. And everybody got on board and said, what a perfect response.

  77. One is silenced.

  78. One is encouraged to flaunt their position.

  79. Why is it like this?

  80. Well, we have the answer direct from Jesus' own lips in these verses this morning.

  81. But before I jump into the passage, I need to do some revision because it's six weeks since we've been in John's biography of Jesus.

  82. As Rob introduced, chapter 14 to 16 is called Jesus' Farewell Discourse.

  83. For obvious reasons, he had told his disciples that he was going away.

  84. Meaning he was about to go to his death in order to achieve God's purpose in salvation.

  85. But we shouldn't think of the farewell discourse as a warm and fuzzy hug and kiss goodbye like you would dropping the kids off to school.

  86. The right picture of the farewell discourse is that of the supreme commander briefing his troops before the decisive battle in a war.

  87. That's the picture you need to have in mind.

  88. This is serious stuff.

  89. The stakes are high.

  90. The disciples, we're told, were confused and terrified about Jesus going away.

  91. We can understand that.

  92. So Jesus walks them through what was about to happen in the immediate future, that is in the next 24, 48 hours,

  93. and in the longer term to them as disciples of Jesus.

  94. And everything he says to them is framed by the opening and closing sentences of the unit.

  95. Chapter 14, verse 1.

  96. Do not let your hearts be troubled.

  97. And chapter 16, verse 33.

  98. I have said these things to you that in me you may have peace.

  99. In the world you will have tribulation.

  100. But take heart.

  101. I have overcome the world.

  102. There are the brackets that frame this.

  103. This is a sobering piece of literature.

  104. This is a sobering speech.

  105. This is a very sobering farewell briefing.

  106. Now let's jump into the passage, beginning with what can only be described as unambiguous language of Jesus and ideas that confront us.

  107. Jesus is calling his disciples here to battle stations.

  108. If I can follow through the military metaphor.

  109. Battle stations brace for an avalanche of hatred.

  110. In these verses, six times in the first two verses, Jesus used the word hate or hatred.

  111. And that's not just an English translation.

  112. That is fair dingam to the Greek word.

  113. It's a strong word.

  114. There's no getting around it.

  115. And this is what the disciples should expect to experience.

  116. And then added to that, as you read through the passage, references to totally unjust persecution.

  117. Irrational persecution.

  118. Sanctions.

  119. Injury.

  120. And even death, says Jesus.

  121. That's what you guys, my followers, have to look forward to.

  122. That's going to be the new normal for you.

  123. As it has been, will become the normal for me.

  124. And has been the normal.

  125. You can just hear Jesus, see Jesus looking around.

  126. Eyeballing all his disciples saying, hey guys, this is not a game.

  127. This is not a dress rehearsal.

  128. This is the real thing.

  129. Listen up.

  130. And he goes on then to, as he briefs them, to talk about hostiles.

  131. Hostiles on the outside, beyond our ranks.

  132. And he calls them here the world.

  133. Which is, in John's gospel, humankind in rebellion against God.

  134. And six times again, the world is mentioned in these first two verses.

  135. And it's how the world will deal with his disciples.

  136. The world is humankind in rebellion against God's rule.

  137. And it includes, therefore, my friends, the majority of our fellow Australians.

  138. And it includes, if you move around the world, the majority of most nations around the world.

  139. What does Jesus say?

  140. That inevitably, not possibly, but inevitably, they will unleash hatred on Christians.

  141. The followers of Jesus.

  142. And I pick up three reasons in here.

  143. Why?

  144. Why will they do that?

  145. Well, it's because, first of all, we identify with Jesus, who is God's king.

  146. Verse 18.

  147. If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.

  148. In verse 20 and 21.

  149. Remember the word that I said to you.

  150. A servant is not greater than his master.

  151. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.

  152. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.

  153. But all these things they will do to you on account of my name.

  154. Because they do not know him who sent me.

  155. The master-servant relationship is one of close identification.

  156. So every part of a servant's identity and daily existence was defined by the master's character and the master's business or master's affairs.

  157. Conversely, the master of the household thought of his servants almost as an extension of himself.

  158. If things were good for him, then they were good for the servants.

  159. And vice versa.

  160. If things went badly for the master, they were going to go badly for the servants.

  161. The other reason, another reason is because we reflect what the world hates.

  162. God's sovereignty.

  163. Look at verse 19.

  164. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own.

  165. But because you're not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore, the world hates you.

  166. The fact that Christians exist is an ongoing testimony to rebellious humankind that God is alive.

  167. That God is powerful and active in his world in spite of every attempt of rebellious humankind to exclude him from his world.

  168. And to claim this world for ourselves.

  169. Christians are a reflection of God's sovereignty.

  170. The reality of salvation is that each Christian has been plucked out of the world, renewed, grafted into Jesus the true vine,

  171. the first part of the verses of chapter 15, and then sent back into the world as branches now of the vine.

  172. The totally new worldview, which at every point is at odds with the attitudes, desires, thinking of those around us, the world.

  173. We now look to Jesus for identity, meaning and purpose in life.

  174. We look to Jesus for our standard of right and wrong and truth, not to one another.

  175. And friends, get this.

  176. Even though people will often say that they're angry at Christians because of our failings and inconsistencies, which are real,

  177. but that's not what this passage is saying to us.

  178. We are hated not because people do not see Jesus or God in us, but because they do.

  179. Because they do see a fundamental difference in how we approach life.

  180. A fundamental difference in where we look to for the authority of life.

  181. And that difference is a reminder to them of the thing they hate, that their professed autonomy is just that, professed.

  182. And they despise that.

  183. And the third reason Jesus gives in here, I think, is that because we're ambassadors of Jesus who exposes rebellion and sin.

  184. So it's God's king, God's kingdom, God's sovereignty, and God's word.

  185. Perfect trifecta.

  186. Perfect hatred.

  187. For it.

  188. Verses 21 to 25.

  189. All these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me.

  190. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin.

  191. But now, they have no excuse for their sin.

  192. Whoever hates me hates my father also.

  193. If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin.

  194. But now they have seen and hated both me and my father.

  195. But the word that is written in their law must be fulfilled.

  196. They hated me without a cause.

  197. Jesus came into this rebellious world, calling it out at every point.

  198. Exposing sin and guilt.

  199. And leaving people without excuse for continued rebellion.

  200. No longer do people say, well, I didn't know that that's what God was like.

  201. Or I didn't know that's how God was operating.

  202. They do now.

  203. And they refuse to accept it.

  204. Because it doesn't fit with what they think God would be like, or should be like, or should operate.

  205. And all that Jesus taught, explained, and modeled has been recorded under God's hand in what we call the Bible.

  206. And therefore continues to challenge and expose people today as Christians.

  207. You and me proclaim the words and works of Jesus in our own generation.

  208. So it's as if when we speak that, it again opens up this great chasm, this great divide.

  209. It challenges autonomy.

  210. People hate it.

  211. Can't get to Jesus.

  212. Next best thing?

  213. They shoot the messenger.

  214. They can't rid themselves of the message.

  215. They shoot the messenger.

  216. Or beat them.

  217. Or whatever else they can imagine to do to them.

  218. And rebellious humankind, and remember what I'm talking about here is really immediate.

  219. It's around it.

  220. It might be your extended family.

  221. Some in your extended family.

  222. It might be your workmates.

  223. It might be your neighbors across the road from you.

  224. It might be the people you play sport with.

  225. Make no mistake.

  226. They actually hate their proud, self-interested, autonomous hearts and lifestyles being exposed.

  227. And as I say, since they can't rid themselves of the message, they certainly do a good job of trying to rid themselves of the messengers.

  228. That's hostiles from without the ranks.

  229. But then, more insidious, Jesus also warms about hostiles within the ranks.

  230. Those who love religion, but hate Jesus.

  231. Chapter 16, verses 1 to 3.

  232. Now, at first read, this doesn't sound right.

  233. But what Jesus is saying here, if we just go on the face value of the words, what Jesus is saying here is that the worst treatment that his disciples will receive will come from those who claim to be doing God's work.

  234. Who are religious people.

  235. And particularly here, the religious people Jesus is referring to are the Jewish religious authorities.

  236. Jesus knew that within the next 24, 48 hours, he was about to experience their ruthless, senseless, violent, murderous hatred.

  237. Every bit of it done in the belief that they were God's agents protecting God's reputation.

  238. And his disciples should expect the same.

  239. Talks here about excommunication, verse 2, from the synagogues.

  240. Now, that doesn't mean much to us in our culture.

  241. But what it meant in those days was a massive thing.

  242. Excommunication meant you were cut off from family privilege, from social privilege, from economic privilege, from religious privilege, from political privilege.

  243. You were totally isolated.

  244. In your local town or village.

  245. But even then, says Jesus, sometimes that won't be enough.

  246. Sometimes the hatred will burn so deep that nothing short of your death will satisfy.

  247. Man, that's a sort of hatred, isn't it?

  248. Why would religious people be so capable of such deep hatred?

  249. Well, Jesus has been saying it right through in his ministry.

  250. For three years now, almost three years, Jesus has been saying the same thing.

  251. And he's been saying the same thing.

  252. Because Jesus has exposed their outside-in religious practices.

  253. Jesus has shown how they think that they can set the criterion for acceptance by God.

  254. That what God will be pleased about is, one, that they're Jewish, as opposed to all the other races.

  255. Two, that they do their prayers, and they read their Bible, and they do all these religious acts, and they offer their sacrifices.

  256. It's a self-salvation that they had concluded would meet with acceptance to God.

  257. And therefore, when they stood before God, God would actually reward them.

  258. Because, well, you're a good person.

  259. And they thought that they were protectors of God, so Jesus had to go.

  260. But Jesus took away their control of their salvation.

  261. They had reduced it to a relatively easy self-salvation, which rewarded their pride and their goodness.

  262. And was racially best.

  263. Jesus said, no, you're totally wrong.

  264. Totally wrong.

  265. They said, no, you must be wrong, Jesus.

  266. And they backed their own thinking.

  267. So Jesus, his message, and all who promoted his message, would have to be silenced.

  268. We talk about people being intransigent, people being unwilling to change a position.

  269. Doesn't come much clearer than that.

  270. And the one who shows himself to be God, repeatedly by what he does and by what he says,

  271. is rejected in favor of their own opinion about how to get to heaven.

  272. Friends, a very simple conclusion out of all of that is don't ever expect it.

  273. Don't ever expect to be welcomed and at ease in the world.

  274. The sad thing is we still hold out hope for that, don't we?

  275. And that's part of being relational.

  276. But we mustn't hold out so much hope that then prizes away from the truth of Jesus.

  277. Inseparably joined into Jesus, chapter 15, verses 1, following, the vine and the branches.

  278. Inseparably joined into Jesus means inevitably linked to hatred directed at him.

  279. Now this is where we sometimes bring ourselves unstuck.

  280. Because I think we genuinely think if only people knew more about God.

  281. It's an information problem.

  282. If only Christians could be more consistent.

  283. And less sort of public scandals.

  284. It's a perception problem.

  285. If only, if only, if only then people would believe.

  286. More people would come to Jesus.

  287. But in fact, the opposite is the case.

  288. The more people realize what God is really like,

  289. the more they see a reflection of God in those who are the followers of Jesus,

  290. the more their hatred rises.

  291. And they back themselves.

  292. Battle stations means being prepared.

  293. But battle stations also means weapons ready.

  294. That's actually a command in the army.

  295. Weapons ready.

  296. A good commander ensures that his troops have all the firepower they need

  297. for the incoming battle.

  298. That means the right weapons and the proper supply of ammunition to feed those weapons.

  299. Jesus provides both defensive and offensive weapons

  300. that are never exhausted in terms of ammunition.

  301. The Holy Spirit, verses 26 and 27.

  302. But the helper, but when the helper comes,

  303. and the word there in the Greek is advocate, it's a legal term,

  304. but when the advocate comes,

  305. whom I will send to you from the Father,

  306. the Spirit of truth,

  307. who proceeds from the Father,

  308. he will bear witness about me.

  309. And you also

  310. will bear witness.

  311. The word paraclete

  312. is like having a personal QC

  313. at your beck and call.

  314. Whose job is to work in and through

  315. each of the followers of Jesus

  316. to assist them

  317. advocate Christ's lordship

  318. and Christ's message of salvation

  319. in this hostile world

  320. while Jesus isn't here.

  321. In Acts chapter 1, verse 8,

    Acts 1:8

  322. the Holy Spirit is described there as dunamis,

  323. that is dynamite.

  324. The Holy Spirit is the power of God

  325. in salvation.

  326. So,

  327. he is not just the perfect defense weapon

  328. who's there to assist us,

  329. he is the perfect offensive weapon.

  330. He is God's dynamite

  331. to blast through

  332. unbelief.

  333. His witness through us

  334. as Christ's followers

  335. will achieve that

  336. which we could never achieve

  337. on our own.

  338. Arrest

  339. and renew

  340. unbelieving,

  341. rebellious hearts,

  342. convicting them of truth,

  343. as we see next week

  344. in chapter 16,

  345. convicting them of truth

  346. in respect to

  347. sin and righteousness

  348. and judgment.

  349. Weapons ready,

  350. the Holy Spirit.

  351. He comes from the Father

  352. so knows every part of the battle

  353. and every one of Jesus' troops

  354. personally.

  355. What a great assurance,

  356. what a great reassurance

  357. to keep us from giving up

  358. and that's exactly

  359. why these words are spoken by Jesus.

  360. To keep us from stumbling

  361. and giving up.

  362. Hear this.

  363. With this weapon,

  364. this Holy Spirit,

  365. our Holy Spirit

  366. within us,

  367. it means this,

  368. that we are never alone

  369. in the battle.

  370. And we are never powerless

  371. in the face

  372. of this avalanche of hatred.

  373. loving one another.

  374. Verse 17.

  375. So it can be argued

  376. whether you put verse 17

  377. in one passage or the other.

  378. I'm going with Don Carson.

  379. I think it's a transition verse.

  380. So it does apply to this.

  381. Jesus has said repeatedly

  382. in this section

  383. of the farewell discourse,

  384. is repeatedly said,

  385. look,

  386. you must love one another

  387. as I have loved you.

  388. Loving one another

  389. is a key

  390. function for God's people.

  391. Loving one another.

  392. we are,

  393. in this battle,

  394. we are to be

  395. as committed

  396. to one another,

  397. to one another's safety

  398. and well-being

  399. as Christ is to us.

  400. As I say,

  401. you can read back through

  402. chapter 13 and 15

  403. and you'll see that.

  404. Love one another

  405. as I have loved you.

  406. Friends,

  407. here's where it comes to us

  408. in this battle.

  409. We have a responsibility

  410. to support

  411. and help one another

  412. stay faithful

  413. in the face of persecution

  414. and attack.

  415. We are to remind one another

  416. of the truth of the gospel

  417. and the certainty

  418. of Christ's victory

  419. when we're in danger

  420. of being overwhelmed

  421. by hatred.

  422. Now this is such a big weapon

  423. in scripture,

  424. but my friends,

  425. it's a weapon

  426. we obviously

  427. just don't value

  428. that much.

  429. We are to lovingly

  430. rescue

  431. and rehabilitate

  432. those who do stumble

  433. or go astray

  434. or get battle weary.

  435. In chapter 15,

  436. the first part of it,

  437. talks about

  438. evidence of

  439. the vine

  440. and the branches

  441. working right

  442. is abiding in Jesus.

  443. Well,

  444. I would say

  445. on the basis of that

  446. then,

  447. that failing

  448. to love one another

  449. is failing

  450. to abide

  451. in Jesus.

  452. Even worse,

  453. I think

  454. it's equivalent

  455. to discarding

  456. the weapon

  457. issued by Jesus

  458. and actually

  459. assist the enemy

  460. in their attack.

  461. How does that assist

  462. the enemy?

  463. because before the enemy

  464. can even get to us,

  465. we have wounded

  466. one another

  467. within.

  468. Within.

  469. How awful is that?

  470. that?

  471. But again,

  472. as I said earlier,

  473. it's so common

  474. in our local churches.

  475. Battle stations.

  476. Weapons ready.

  477. Friends,

  478. with those two

  479. commands,

  480. we can be encouraged

  481. because everything

  482. is as King

  483. Jesus said

  484. it would be.

  485. He knows

  486. precisely

  487. what we are

  488. going through.

  489. He's been there

  490. before us.

  491. He's not some

  492. uncaring,

  493. dispassionate

  494. commander

  495. who just

  496. sees his people

  497. as cannon fodder.

  498. He knew

  499. what was coming.

  500. He's provided

  501. for every

  502. assurance

  503. and comfort

  504. and reassurance.

  505. But more than that,

  506. everything

  507. is going

  508. exactly to plan.

  509. Jesus said this

  510. before it all

  511. happened

  512. so that we'd know

  513. when it happened

  514. that he was

  515. in control,

  516. that he could

  517. see ahead,

  518. that he is

  519. the Lord

  520. and God

  521. that he claimed

  522. to be.

  523. He knows

  524. the end

  525. of the battle

  526. before we even

  527. join it.

  528. He knows

  529. his troops

  530. by name.

  531. Person by person

  532. across this

  533. universe,

  534. God's salvation

  535. purpose

  536. is being

  537. achieved

  538. in spite

  539. of all

  540. the hatred

  541. and God's

  542. glory

  543. is being

  544. displayed.

  545. God's

  546. salvation

  547. will be

  548. achieved.

  549. Do we take

  550. collateral

  551. damage?

  552. Absolutely.

  553. But that's a

  554. battle.

  555. The battle

  556. is as Jesus

  557. said it would

  558. be.

  559. The outcome

  560. is as Jesus

  561. promised it

  562. will be.

  563. God will be

  564. glorified.

  565. Not one of his

  566. people will be

  567. lost.

  568. God's salvation

  569. purpose will be

  570. achieved.

  571. Friends,

  572. our weapons

  573. are more than

  574. adequate for the

  575. task God

  576. calls us to.

  577. Repeated

  578. attacks have

  579. been repulsed

  580. and Christ's

  581. cause is

  582. alive as

  583. has always

  584. been.

  585. We should be

  586. encouraged but I

  587. want to pose one

  588. question as I

  589. close.

  590. Just very

  591. briefly,

  592. just more or

  593. less to throw it

  594. into your mind

  595. to think

  596. about.

  597. Given all

  598. the above

  599. that Jesus

  600. said,

  601. what if I've

  602. not experienced

  603. that attack?

  604. What if the

  605. attack hasn't

  606. come?

  607. Well, let me

  608. just throw a

  609. couple of

  610. things into

  611. your mind

  612. to think

  613. about.

  614. A couple

  615. of perhaps.

  616. Perhaps

  617. what it

  618. means is

  619. that what

  620. the world

  621. hears from

  622. you is no

  623. challenge.

  624. There's a

  625. big movement

  626. among Christians

  627. today that

  628. argues that

  629. the best way

  630. we can get

  631. along Christians

  632. and see them

  633. saved is to

  634. move towards

  635. them and to

  636. find as many

  637. common points

  638. as we can so

  639. that the gap

  640. between our

  641. gospel message

  642. and their

  643. lifestyle at the

  644. moment is as

  645. small as

  646. possible.

  647. So we

  648. emphasize the

  649. positives of

  650. Christianity and

  651. the gospel,

  652. the things that

  653. are likely to

  654. like, and we

  655. downplay the

  656. negatives.

  657. We don't talk

  658. so much about

  659. sin and judgment

  660. and giving up

  661. autonomy and new

  662. obedience.

  663. But my

  664. friends, the

  665. divide is so

  666. great, it

  667. can't be

  668. crossed without

  669. compromise.

  670. It can't be

  671. brought together

  672. without compromise.

  673. What the

  674. world needs

  675. is not

  676. identification

  677. with it,

  678. but a real

  679. alternative.

  680. What the

  681. world needs

  682. is counter

  683. cultural people

  684. who are prepared

  685. to stand up

  686. and say,

  687. look, this

  688. empty way of

  689. life handed

  690. down from

  691. our

  692. forefathers

  693. is just

  694. that, it's

  695. empty.

  696. And here I

  697. offer the

  698. alternative in

  699. the Lord

  700. Jesus.

  701. Perhaps what

  702. the world

  703. sees in you

  704. is no

  705. threat.

  706. Perhaps you've

  707. thought over

  708. the years,

  709. well, okay,

  710. yes, I'm

  711. certainly wanting

  712. to be a

  713. Christian, I

  714. certainly want

  715. to and need

  716. to identify a

  717. bit with

  718. Jesus, but

  719. I'm pretty

  720. sure I can

  721. also indulge

  722. and identify

  723. a fair bit

  724. with the

  725. world and

  726. its pleasures.

  727. The Bible

  728. warns us about

  729. that and

  730. perhaps,

  731. perhaps,

  732. lack of

  733. attack is

  734. actually evidence

  735. to you that,

  736. well, you

  737. cannot serve

  738. two masters

  739. and that one

  740. has captured

  741. your heart

  742. and it's

  743. not Jesus.

  744. Jesus.

  745. Jesus.

  746. Jesus.

  747. Jesus.

  748. Jesus.

  749. Jesus.

  750. Jesus.

  751. Jesus.

  752. Jesus.

  753. Jesus.

  754. Jesus.

  755. Jesus.

  756. And finally,

  757. the most

  758. drastic one,

  759. perhaps you're

  760. still in the

  761. world and

  762. not yet in

  763. Jesus.

  764. That's a real

  765. possibility for

  766. some here this

  767. morning.

  768. In other

  769. words, if

  770. you're in the

  771. world, then

  772. the world

  773. loves you as

  774. its own.

  775. That's what

  776. Jesus says

  777. here.

  778. Maybe that

  779. explains any

  780. lack of attack

  781. that you might

  782. perceive in

  783. your life,

  784. your circumstance.

  785. And just to

  786. keep the

  787. military theme

  788. going to the

  789. very end.

  790. When challenged

  791. by the

  792. word of

  793. Jesus, you

  794. only have two

  795. options to

  796. answer.

  797. Friend or

  798. foe.

  799. Let me pray.

  800. Lord, we pray

  801. that your

  802. word might not

  803. be stolen away

  804. from us this

  805. morning, either

  806. because of the

  807. heat or

  808. because of

  809. circumstances

  810. happening among

  811. us right at

  812. this moment.

  813. We pray, Lord,

  814. that the evil

  815. one might not

  816. be able to

  817. do that.

  818. Pray, Lord,

  819. that we might

  820. be confronted

  821. by it and

  822. rightly

  823. encouraged by

  824. it, Lord,

  825. as your

  826. people.

  827. But, Lord,

  828. I pray also

  829. that any here

  830. this morning

  831. who are not

  832. your people

  833. might be

  834. rightly

  835. challenged by

  836. it and

  837. confronted by

  838. it, Lord,

  839. as a

  840. decision that

  841. is yet to

  842. be made.

  843. Will they

  844. stand with

  845. Jesus?

  846. Or will they

  847. stand with

  848. the world,

  849. even though

  850. there is no

  851. excuse left

  852. for sin,

  853. no excuse

  854. left for

  855. rebellion,

  856. no ability

  857. to plead

  858. ignorance,

  859. only the

  860. fearsome

  861. prospect of

  862. having to

  863. give account

  864. to you for

  865. having ignored

  866. the truth of

  867. Jesus.

  868. Help us, we

  869. pray in Jesus'

  870. name.

  871. Amen.
