  1. We're going to be reading from the Gospel of John, chapter 16, if you'd like to turn there.

    John 16 chapter mention

  2. We're going to be starting from the middle of verse 4, which is the start of the paragraph there.

  3. And just a bit of context, we're going to be reading Jesus' words to his disciples the night before he's crucified.

  4. John, chapter 16, starting halfway through verse 4.

    John 16 chapter mention

  5. I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you.

  6. But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, where are you going?

  7. But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.

  8. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth.

  9. It is to your advantage that I go away.

  10. For if I do not go away, the helper will not come to you.

  11. But if I go, I will send him to you.

  12. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.

  13. Concerning sin, because they do not believe in me.

  14. Concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you will see me no longer.

  15. Concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

  16. I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

  17. When the spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.

  18. For he will not speak on his own authority.

  19. But whatever he hears, he will speak.

  20. And he will declare to you the things that are to come.

  21. He will glorify me.

  22. For he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

  23. All that the Father has is mine.

  24. Therefore, I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

  25. Okay.

  26. Voices have died down.

  27. Why don't we make a start?

  28. My name is Dave.

  29. I'm one of the pastors here.

  30. If you don't know me, thanks for being with us.

  31. I'm going to pray before we look at God's word.

  32. Would you pray with me?

  33. Lord God, you are not silent, but you speak.

  34. You are not distant, but you are with us.

  35. And so we ask that you would speak to each of our hearts this morning.

  36. Lord, I pray that you would give each of us ears to hear you,

  37. minds to understand and hearts that actually cherish what you say.

  38. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  39. Amen.

  40. Well, when we are stuck in our sin or paralyzed by discouragement

  41. or feeling inadequate to do any good,

  42. when our heart is more in love with what the world has to offer

  43. rather than the joy and the peace that Jesus has to offer,

  44. what hope do we have that we can change?

  45. I reckon surely if Jesus was standing right in front of us,

  46. in the flesh,

  47. he could set us free from our sin.

  48. His presence would renew us, encourage us, put us back on our feet.

  49. His power would be visible,

  50. and desire for him would trump whatever the world has to offer.

  51. Surely if he was right here, that would help us, that would change us.

  52. But the surprising thing that our Lord says to us this morning in our passage

  53. is that it is to your advantage.

  54. It is better for you that I go away.

  55. How can that possibly be better?

  56. When a family member doesn't want to believe in Jesus,

  57. when they make you feel stupid,

  58. perhaps even ashamed,

  59. for believing what Jesus says,

  60. how can it be better that Jesus isn't here?

  61. When Christians and churches argue and distance themselves from one another

  62. over small differences,

  63. how can it be better that Jesus isn't here?

  64. When you've got me and Rob and David to stand up here and preach,

  65. how is it not better that Jesus isn't here preaching?

  66. When we want all of Glendale and all university students

  67. and all of Myanmar and PNG and Pillard to hear the good news

  68. and believe and have eternal life,

  69. how is it not better that Jesus isn't here?

  70. During the days of the Reformation,

  71. when Martin Luther was making a stand for the gospel

  72. that we are saved by grace alone,

  73. through faith alone,

  74. in Christ alone,

  75. by God's word alone,

  76. but those with all the power in this world

  77. were hunting him down to kill him,

  78. how is it not better that Jesus wasn't here at that time?

  79. When in the early days of the church

  80. and Roman emperors who had all the power

  81. sometimes systematically

  82. attacked the Christians,

  83. burning rare copies of the Bible,

  84. killing church leaders,

  85. and sometimes ordering an empire-wide,

  86. everyone in the empire had to sacrifice the Roman gods

  87. or be executed.

  88. How is it not better at that time for the church

  89. when it was just starting

  90. for Jesus not to be here,

  91. to protect it?

  92. Or when the church began initially,

  93. it was just 120 people,

  94. less people than in this room,

  95. and ordinary people,

  96. alone and fearful in Jerusalem,

  97. and yet they're tasked

  98. to take the good news to the whole world.

  99. How is it not better that Jesus

  100. wasn't here?

  101. How is it not better?

  102. How is it not better?

  103. How is it not better that Jesus wasn't here?

  104. Let's find out.

  105. Let's listen to John 16.

  106. In John 16,

  107. we're in the upper room,

  108. and in about 24 hours,

  109. Jesus will be dead.

  110. So like a commander,

  111. he's preparing his troops

  112. for the battle to come.

  113. Up to this point,

  114. he's been with them,

  115. absorbing all the hostility upon himself,

  116. with the disciples tucked safely behind him.

  117. But he warns us,

  118. this hostility won't stop once he's gone,

  119. it's just going to be redirected to his people.

  120. Don't be surprised.

  121. Hold your ground.

  122. Keep telling people the truth.

  123. But the people of this world

  124. aren't only lacking information about God.

  125. If they were,

  126. every single person who met Jesus

  127. would have believed.

  128. But that didn't happen.

  129. What is the real problem?

  130. What's the real obstacle?

  131. John 3, verse 19 tells us,

    John 3:19

  132. and this is the judgment.

  133. The light has come into the world,

  134. and people loved the darkness

  135. rather than the light

  136. because their works were evil.

  137. How do you like it when in the dark

  138. someone turns the light on?

  139. It's really annoying, isn't it?

  140. How will Jesus' disciples have any success

  141. in bringing people who love darkness

  142. into the light of knowing God?

  143. Jesus is saying,

  144. get ready to take all the hits,

  145. stand firm,

  146. continue offering the world

  147. what it doesn't want.

  148. In the TV series,

  149. Blackadder Goes Forth,

  150. Rowan Atkinson plays Captain Blackadder,

  151. and he's in the trenches during World War II,

  152. and in one scene,

  153. the army general pays a visit to the trenches

  154. before the troops go over the top

  155. and advance towards the enemies

  156. with their machine guns.

  157. And the general asks the soldier,

  158. Baldrick,

  159. are you looking forward to the big push?

  160. to which Baldrick replies,

  161. no, sir,

  162. I'm absolutely terrified.

  163. The general laughs,

  164. ah,

  165. the healthy humour of the honest Tommy,

  166. don't worry, my boy,

  167. if you should falter,

  168. remember I am right behind you.

  169. To which Rowan Atkinson says,

  170. yes,

  171. about 35 miles behind you.

  172. The disciples are filled with sorrow

  173. in their heart.

  174. And it seems reasonable, doesn't it?

  175. Our King is leaving us.

  176. Have you ever felt disillusioned

  177. with the local church?

  178. discouraged from not seeing any fruit?

  179. Perhaps you've even experienced

  180. the sting of hostile friends and families

  181. who are trying to turn off the light.

  182. But is it right for the apostles then

  183. and for us now to be filled with sorrow?

  184. Is it right?

  185. Jesus doesn't think so.

  186. He draws the disciples' attention

  187. to the fact that none of you ask me

  188. where I'm going.

  189. Why should they be focused on that?

  190. And didn't Peter just hours before

  191. ask that very question?

  192. I think when Peter asked it,

  193. he wasn't focused on the actual answer.

  194. But like a child who expects

  195. to spend the day with their dad

  196. and their dad is called in to work

  197. for an emergency

  198. and the child asks the dad,

  199. where are you going?

  200. It's an expression of feeling abandoned.

  201. Why are you leaving me?

  202. The disciples aren't focused

  203. on where Jesus is going.

  204. They're focused on the hardships

  205. that his leaving will mean for them.

  206. So why should they

  207. and why should we

  208. be focused on where Jesus is going?

  209. Sometimes I can get into this

  210. self-pitying headspace

  211. where woe is me.

  212. All I can think about

  213. is the negative impacts on me

  214. and Emma has to put up with me.

  215. I don't know if you've experienced this,

  216. but what do I need

  217. at that point in time

  218. to put my attention to?

  219. What's going to refresh my perspective

  220. and give me new strength?

  221. I need to remember

  222. why Jesus left.

  223. I need to remember where he is

  224. and how he's giving me,

  225. he's giving us all we need

  226. to face the circumstances

  227. that we're in.

  228. Our king

  229. is not

  230. 35 miles

  231. behind us.

  232. The king

  233. we serve,

  234. he went alone

  235. into the battle

  236. that won the war.

  237. He took upon himself

  238. the full force

  239. of the hatred of the world.

  240. He let Satan

  241. have his hour over him.

  242. He took our sin

  243. and he ran straight

  244. towards the wrath

  245. and judgment of God.

  246. He did it for us.

  247. Without him leaving,

  248. I would still love

  249. the darkness.

  250. But now he is raised

  251. to the Father's side

  252. in all authority

  253. and he's raised us

  254. with him.

  255. we no longer belong

  256. to the world

  257. but we are

  258. the eternal children

  259. of God.

  260. And you and I

  261. right here and now

  262. have all the authority

  263. of heaven

  264. at work

  265. to help us

  266. in every single moment

  267. that we face.

  268. That's not reason

  269. for sorrow,

  270. that's reason

  271. for rejoicing.

  272. But even at this

  273. late hour,

  274. the apostles

  275. still don't get

  276. what Jesus

  277. is about to do

  278. for them.

  279. They have the truth

  280. sitting right across

  281. from them

  282. but the truth

  283. hasn't gripped

  284. their hearts yet.

  285. Jesus is going

  286. to win

  287. the decisive battle

  288. but even when

  289. he's gone,

  290. it's still better

  291. for the church

  292. that he isn't here.

  293. while we represent

  294. him on earth.

  295. So why is it better?

  296. Verse 7,

  297. have a look.

  298. For if I do not

  299. go away,

  300. the helper

  301. will not come

  302. to you

  303. but if I go,

  304. I will send

  305. him to you.

  306. We're not told

  307. why the Holy Spirit

  308. can't be sent

  309. until Jesus

  310. is gone.

  311. It could be

  312. because

  313. it's only once

  314. Christ gets

  315. the victory

  316. that the Holy Spirit

  317. can apply

  318. that victory

  319. into our hearts

  320. but whatever

  321. the reason,

  322. Jesus says

  323. it's better

  324. that he leaves

  325. and the Spirit

  326. comes

  327. and he explains

  328. why.

  329. He doesn't leave

  330. it at that.

  331. He helps us

  332. understand why.

  333. The Spirit's

  334. going to do

  335. two things.

  336. Notice the Spirit's

  337. two names.

  338. They tell us

  339. what his two works

  340. will be.

  341. In verses

  342. 8 to 11

  343. he's the helper

  344. which doesn't

  345. mean he's

  346. a personal

  347. assistant.

  348. The word

  349. doesn't have

  350. an exact

  351. translation

  352. for English

  353. but it's

  354. more like

  355. a legal

  356. prosecutor

  357. who argues

  358. for the truth

  359. convicting

  360. unbelieving

  361. hostile hearts

  362. of the truth

  363. of Christ.

  364. And in

  365. verses 12

  366. to 15

  367. he's called

  368. the Spirit

  369. of Truth

  370. because he

  371. guides Christ's

  372. people

  373. into all

  374. truth

  375. by speaking

  376. on behalf

  377. of Christ

  378. and about

  379. Christ.

  380. So let's

  381. take a closer

  382. look at each

  383. of these.

  384. First

  385. the prosecutor.

  386. Verse 8

  387. Now these

  388. verses are

  389. difficult.

  390. When I first

  391. read them

  392. I was so

  393. confused.

  394. I was like

  395. what is

  396. going on?

  397. But once

  398. we look at

  399. them it's

  400. really

  401. encouraging.

  402. We don't

  403. have time to

  404. go through

  405. all the

  406. detail of

  407. the verses

  408. so let me

  409. just highlight

  410. the overall

  411. flow of

  412. what's being

  413. said here.

  414. When the

  415. Spirit's

  416. work is

  417. mentioned in

  418. the New

  419. Testament

  420. it's nearly

  421. always in

  422. Christians,

  423. among

  424. Christians.

  425. But here

  426. the Spirit

  427. will be

  428. working in

  429. the unbelieving

  430. world.

  431. So picture

  432. an average

  433. Australian

  434. happy in

  435. their

  436. materialistic

  437. self-centered

  438. lifestyle.

  439. not

  440. interested in

  441. God

  442. because

  443. they're

  444. convinced

  445. the

  446. universe

  447. created

  448. itself

  449. and yet

  450. self-assured

  451. that they

  452. are a good

  453. person.

  454. So much

  455. so that

  456. there's not

  457. even slight

  458. fear that

  459. God's

  460. judgment

  461. might be

  462. coming.

  463. What hope

  464. of change

  465. is there in

  466. a heart

  467. like that?

  468. if we

  469. really

  470. polish our

  471. church

  472. services

  473. and our

  474. ministries

  475. is that

  476. going to

  477. change?

  478. From

  479. culture to

  480. culture the

  481. expression of

  482. this is going

  483. to change.

  484. From

  485. person to

  486. person the

  487. expression of

  488. this unbelief

  489. is going to

  490. change.

  491. But what is

  492. universal is

  493. that humanly

  494. speaking it is

  495. impossible

  496. that a

  497. single heart

  498. is changed.

  499. And that's

  500. why these

  501. verses are

  502. such good

  503. news.

  504. It's the

  505. only reason

  506. we're here

  507. this morning.

  508. There's only

  509. one power

  510. that gives

  511. us any

  512. hope.

  513. The Holy

  514. Spirit

  515. convicting a

  516. person's

  517. heart of

  518. the truth.

  519. Notice

  520. that this

  521. conviction is

  522. all centred

  523. on Jesus

  524. and what

  525. he has

  526. done.

  527. about sin

  528. because they

  529. do not

  530. believe in

  531. me.

  532. If Jesus

  533. is the

  534. exact measure

  535. of what is

  536. right and

  537. good but

  538. someone just

  539. disregards

  540. Jesus,

  541. how can a

  542. person even

  543. see their

  544. own sin

  545. clearly?

  546. They've

  547. already

  548. disregarded the

  549. measure of

  550. what's good.

  551. The Spirit

  552. must show

  553. someone their

  554. sin.

  555. Otherwise

  556. we're blind

  557. to it.

  558. Whenever

  559. you see

  560. your sin

  561. that is

  562. God's

  563. grace.

  564. About

  565. righteousness

  566. because I

  567. go to the

  568. Father and

  569. you see me

  570. no longer.

  571. If you

  572. ask someone

  573. today are

  574. you a good

  575. person?

  576. I think

  577. most people

  578. would say

  579. yeah,

  580. I'm pretty

  581. good.

  582. But what's

  583. the measure

  584. they're using

  585. to evaluate

  586. their own

  587. righteousness?

  588. While Jesus

  589. was on

  590. earth,

  591. his righteousness

  592. exposed every

  593. false measure

  594. of righteousness.

  595. righteousness.

  596. But since

  597. Jesus goes

  598. to the

  599. Father,

  600. he is

  601. vindicated

  602. as being

  603. the only

  604. true

  605. righteous

  606. one.

  607. Even

  608. though the

  609. world condemned

  610. him,

  611. he is

  612. righteous.

  613. And when he

  614. says we see

  615. him no longer,

  616. he's referring

  617. to his

  618. death.

  619. He's leaving.

  620. he's going

  621. to die in

  622. order to

  623. give us

  624. true

  625. righteousness.

  626. The

  627. Holy Spirit

  628. alone can

  629. expose a

  630. person's

  631. false sense

  632. of goodness

  633. and also

  634. convict a

  635. person of

  636. Jesus'

  637. true

  638. righteousness.

  639. About

  640. judgment.

  641. Because the

  642. ruler of

  643. this world

  644. is judged.

  645. Despite

  646. the world

  647. deciding that

  648. Jesus should

  649. die,

  650. what really

  651. happened on

  652. the cross

  653. was that

  654. Jesus judged

  655. the ruler of

  656. this world,

  657. Satan,

  658. and all who

  659. belong to

  660. him by

  661. believing

  662. lies.

  663. The cross

  664. of Jesus

  665. tells the

  666. world that

  667. they stand

  668. under God's

  669. judgment.

  670. judgment.

  671. A person

  672. needs to be

  673. convicted of

  674. their wrong

  675. assessment of

  676. Jesus and

  677. convicted that

  678. they are in

  679. danger of

  680. God's

  681. judgment.

  682. This is

  683. good news.

  684. What hope is

  685. there that

  686. unbelieving,

  687. hostile hearts

  688. can change?

  689. What hope is

  690. there is that

  691. the spirit

  692. smashes through

  693. unbelief and

  694. presses the

  695. truth into

  696. someone's

  697. heart?

  698. If you

  699. believe in

  700. Jesus this

  701. morning, you

  702. didn't just

  703. need information

  704. to make an

  705. informed choice.

  706. You needed the

  707. spirit to break

  708. you down, to

  709. get into your

  710. heart, to

  711. smash through

  712. our unbelief,

  713. expose your

  714. sin, expose

  715. your false

  716. measure of

  717. goodness,

  718. expose that

  719. you're in

  720. danger of

  721. the judgment

  722. of God and

  723. then show you

  724. Christ and

  725. how good he

  726. is and that

  727. he's able to

  728. save us.

  729. Praise God for

  730. the spirit's work

  731. in our hearts.

  732. It is a

  733. miracle if you

  734. believe.

  735. But by what

  736. means does the

  737. spirit usually do

  738. this heart

  739. convicting work?

  740. The primary

  741. instrument he

  742. uses is the

  743. witness of

  744. Christ's people.

  745. Notice that

  746. although the

  747. spirit works in

  748. the world, that

  749. the spirit is

  750. given to you,

  751. to the

  752. disciples.

  753. And at the

  754. end of the

  755. previous chapter,

  756. the hostile

  757. world will be

  758. taken on by

  759. the spirit

  760. bearing witness

  761. and the

  762. church, the

  763. disciples bearing

  764. witness.

  765. They're united in

  766. doing that.

  767. The spirit works

  768. through the

  769. witness of the

  770. church.

  771. As we live

  772. for the truth,

  773. as we speak

  774. the truth, if

  775. the spirit takes

  776. that and works

  777. it in a

  778. person's heart,

  779. how can our

  780. witness fail to

  781. achieve everything

  782. that God wants

  783. it to achieve?

  784. You and I

  785. can't get to a

  786. person's heart.

  787. I don't believe I

  788. can, preaching

  789. this morning.

  790. I can't get to a

  791. person's heart.

  792. But that's not my

  793. job.

  794. That's not our

  795. job.

  796. That's not a

  797. burden we should

  798. carry.

  799. That's the

  800. spirit's job.

  801. But the

  802. spirit does use

  803. us, his local

  804. church, as his

  805. primary instrument.

  806. And that's why

  807. the second work

  808. of the Holy

  809. Spirit in verses

  810. 12 to 15 is

  811. just as critical

  812. and exactly what

  813. we need.

  814. The apostles

  815. couldn't handle

  816. all that they were

  817. hearing from Jesus.

  818. It wasn't sinking

  819. in.

  820. Partly that's

  821. because Jesus

  822. hadn't died and

  823. risen yet.

  824. But it's also

  825. probably because

  826. like us all,

  827. grasping the

  828. truth is not a

  829. one-time event.

  830. It's an ongoing

  831. process.

  832. So this is what

  833. the spirit does for

  834. us.

  835. Look at verse

  836. 14.

  837. In an even

  838. better way, the

  839. church does have

  840. Christ speaking

  841. to us, but

  842. speaking by the

  843. spirit into our

  844. hearts so that we

  845. actually believe

  846. what we hear.

  847. like the

  848. son only

  849. speaking with

  850. the authority

  851. of the father,

  852. so the spirit

  853. will only speak

  854. with the

  855. authority of

  856. the son.

  857. In other

  858. words, there

  859. is no more

  860. truth about God

  861. to be found

  862. that is outside

  863. of Jesus.

  864. It's all in

  865. Jesus.

  866. The spirit

  867. places the

  868. entire spotlight

  869. on Christ.

  870. Christ.

  871. He wants

  872. Christ to get

  873. all the glory

  874. in our hearts,

  875. in the world.

  876. He wants us

  877. to know him,

  878. believe him,

  879. and love him.

  880. The spirit

  881. took what the

  882. apostles saw

  883. as they lived

  884. with Jesus

  885. through his

  886. earthly ministry

  887. the whole way

  888. through.

  889. He took

  890. what the

  891. apostles saw

  892. and then

  893. he made

  894. them believe

  895. it and

  896. taught them

  897. the implications

  898. of all that

  899. they saw,

  900. how to live

  901. the Christian

  902. way.

  903. So this work

  904. of the spirit

  905. is first

  906. for the

  907. apostles.

  908. Then through

  909. the teaching

  910. of the

  911. apostles,

  912. the spirit

  913. works all

  914. truth into

  915. the hearts

  916. of the entire

  917. church down

  918. through the

  919. ages,

  920. from generation

  921. to generation.

  922. We only

  923. know about

  924. Christ because

  925. of the

  926. New Testament,

  927. because of

  928. God's word

  929. showing us

  930. the Old

  931. Testament,

  932. the promises

  933. being fulfilled.

  934. We only know

  935. that through

  936. the apostles'

  937. testimony.

  938. testimony.

  939. Through the

  940. word of God,

  941. the spirit

  942. speaks into

  943. our hearts.

  944. And there's

  945. so many

  946. encouraging

  947. implications

  948. of this.

  949. You and

  950. I don't

  951. need to go

  952. searching for

  953. God's voice

  954. in our gut

  955. feelings.

  956. We don't

  957. need to go

  958. searching for

  959. God's voice

  960. in a random

  961. lyric playing

  962. on the radio.

  963. We search

  964. for God's

  965. voice in

  966. the truth

  967. of God's

  968. word.

  969. Whenever you

  970. read it,

  971. whenever you

  972. hear truthful

  973. teaching,

  974. when your

  975. friend speaks

  976. it to you,

  977. you are

  978. hearing the

  979. spirit speak.

  980. God's word

  981. is not this

  982. static textbook

  983. that we

  984. dissect and

  985. analyze.

  986. God's word

  987. is alive and

  988. active because

  989. the spirit is

  990. at work

  991. speaking through

  992. the word

  993. to glorify

  994. Christ.

  995. God is

  996. speaking.

  997. Now some

  998. truths will

  999. grip us in

  1000. a penny

  1001. drop moment.

  1002. We'll just

  1003. say, oh wow,

  1004. I never saw

  1005. that before.

  1006. But I think

  1007. other truths

  1008. are just bit

  1009. by bit by bit

  1010. by bit,

  1011. like a stream

  1012. cutting away

  1013. the rock.

  1014. The spirit

  1015. is at work

  1016. speaking to

  1017. our hearts,

  1018. helping us

  1019. understand

  1020. Christ.

  1021. We are

  1022. not left

  1023. alone to

  1024. understand

  1025. Christ, to

  1026. believe Christ,

  1027. to live for

  1028. him.

  1029. The spirit

  1030. is among

  1031. us and in

  1032. us,

  1033. speaking.

  1034. Now I

  1035. don't think

  1036. this should

  1037. make us

  1038. lazy and

  1039. passive.

  1040. I think

  1041. this actually

  1042. gives us

  1043. confidence

  1044. that any

  1045. effort we

  1046. put in at

  1047. small group

  1048. discussion,

  1049. in Grace

  1050. Kids, over

  1051. the dinner

  1052. table, one

  1053. to ones, in

  1054. all our

  1055. conversations

  1056. with one

  1057. another, any

  1058. effort that we

  1059. put in to

  1060. help one

  1061. another know

  1062. Christ better,

  1063. this gives us

  1064. confidence that

  1065. the spirit is

  1066. taking that and

  1067. working it in

  1068. our hearts.

  1069. it's not

  1070. useless, he's

  1071. powerfully at

  1072. work.

  1073. So let's

  1074. return to our

  1075. original question,

  1076. how can it

  1077. possibly be

  1078. better that

  1079. Jesus leaves

  1080. his people?

  1081. Even though we

  1082. sometimes feel

  1083. abandoned, our

  1084. Lord has not

  1085. left us as

  1086. orphans in this

  1087. world.

  1088. It is

  1089. better that

  1090. Jesus left

  1091. because the

  1092. spirit is here

  1093. changing hearts,

  1094. convicting the

  1095. world and

  1096. guiding the

  1097. church into

  1098. truth.

  1099. Remember how

  1100. the church

  1101. began.

  1102. Just a

  1103. handful of

  1104. ordinary people

  1105. in one city

  1106. behind closed

  1107. doors,

  1108. probably afraid

  1109. for their own

  1110. lives,

  1111. intimidated by

  1112. the task

  1113. going to

  1114. the whole

  1115. world.

  1116. But when

  1117. the spirit

  1118. came,

  1119. Peter,

  1120. who had

  1121. once disowned

  1122. Christ publicly,

  1123. this time he

  1124. goes out into

  1125. the world and

  1126. he says,

  1127. let all the

  1128. house of

  1129. Israel therefore

  1130. know for

  1131. certain that

  1132. God has made

  1133. him both

  1134. Lord and

  1135. Christ, this

  1136. Jesus whom

  1137. you crucified.

  1138. And what

  1139. happened?

  1140. Now when they

  1141. heard this,

  1142. they were cut

  1143. to the heart.

  1144. And said to

  1145. Peter and the

  1146. rest of the

  1147. apostles,

  1148. brothers, what

  1149. shall we do?

  1150. And Peter said

  1151. to them, repent

  1152. and be baptized

  1153. every one of you

  1154. in the name of

  1155. Jesus Christ for

  1156. the forgiveness

  1157. of your sins and

  1158. you will receive

  1159. the gift of the

  1160. Holy Spirit.

  1161. For the promise is

  1162. for you and for

  1163. your children and

  1164. for all who are

  1165. far off, everyone

  1166. whom the Lord God

  1167. calls to himself.

  1168. So those who

  1169. received his word

  1170. were baptized and

  1171. there were added

  1172. that day about

  1173. 3,000 souls and

  1174. they devoted

  1175. themselves to the

  1176. apostles' teaching

  1177. and the fellowship

  1178. to the breaking

  1179. of bread and the

  1180. prayers.

  1181. Instead of seeing

  1182. Jesus with our

  1183. eyes and hearing

  1184. him with our

  1185. ears, better

  1186. than that, we

  1187. have the Spirit

  1188. speaking the truth

  1189. with convicting

  1190. force into our

  1191. hearts.

  1192. That family

  1193. member who

  1194. humanly speaking

  1195. has no chance

  1196. of seeing their

  1197. sin and crying

  1198. out for a

  1199. saviour, when

  1200. you feel

  1201. threatened and

  1202. fearful and

  1203. alone in your

  1204. conversations with

  1205. them, remember

  1206. the Spirit can

  1207. change hearts.

  1208. So pray.

  1209. while ever as a

  1210. church and as

  1211. families and in

  1212. our own minds we

  1213. are constantly

  1214. seeking God's

  1215. voice through his

  1216. word, then we

  1217. can have every

  1218. confidence the

  1219. Spirit will change

  1220. our hearts to be

  1221. more and more

  1222. satisfied by the

  1223. truth.

  1224. It's better for us

  1225. because the Spirit

  1226. is here changing

  1227. our hearts.

  1228. Will you pray

  1229. with me?

  1230. Father, left to

  1231. ourselves we

  1232. would not

  1233. only not

  1234. understand the

  1235. gospel, we

  1236. would not be

  1237. attracted to

  1238. you.

  1239. We would want

  1240. to keep living

  1241. for ourselves.

  1242. Father, we

  1243. praise your

  1244. mercy for

  1245. sending Jesus

  1246. to die for

  1247. us and

  1248. sending your

  1249. Spirit to

  1250. change our

  1251. hearts, to

  1252. break through

  1253. our unbelief.

  1254. We are only

  1255. here this

  1256. morning because

  1257. of your mercy

  1258. alone.

  1259. Help us as a

  1260. church praise

  1261. your mercy

  1262. alone.

  1263. Father, help us

  1264. as a church to

  1265. seek after your

  1266. voice.

  1267. Thank you that

  1268. you're with us.

  1269. Thank you that

  1270. you have not

  1271. left us.

  1272. Keep speaking to

  1273. us, Lord, and

  1274. give us hearts

  1275. that listen.

  1276. In Jesus' name,

  1277. Amen.

  1278. Amen.

  1279. Amen.

  1280. Amen.

  1281. Amen.

  1282. Amen.

  1283. Amen.

  1284. Amen.

  1285. Amen.

  1286. Amen.

  1287. Amen.

  1288. Amen.

  1289. Amen.

  1290. Amen.

  1291. Amen.

  1292. Amen.

  1293. Amen.

  1294. Amen.

  1295. Amen.

  1296. Amen.

  1297. Amen.
