  1. for the last few chapters of John.

  2. So we're reading the whole of chapter 17,

  3. although we'll be concentrating on the first verses in the sermon.

  4. Starting at verse 1, chapter 17.

  5. When Jesus had spoken these words,

  6. he lifted up his eyes to heaven and said,

  7. Father, the hour has come.

  8. Glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you,

  9. since you've given him authority over all flesh

  10. to give eternal life to all whom you've given him.

  11. And this is eternal life,

  12. that they know you, the only true God,

  13. and Jesus Christ, whom you've sent.

  14. I glorified you on earth,

  15. having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.

  16. And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence

  17. with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.

  18. I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world.

  19. Yours they were,

  20. and you gave them to me,

  21. and they have kept your word.

  22. Now they know everything that you've given me is from you.

  23. For I have given them the words that you gave me,

  24. and they have received them,

  25. and have come to know in truth that I came from you,

  26. and they have believed that you sent me.

  27. I am praying for them.

  28. I'm not praying for the world,

  29. but for those whom you have given me,

  30. for they are yours.

  31. All mine are yours,

  32. and yours are mine,

  33. and I am glorified in them.

  34. And I am no longer in the world,

  35. but they are in the world,

  36. and I am coming to you.

  37. Holy Father,

  38. keep them in your name,

  39. which you've given me,

  40. that they may be one,

  41. even as we are one.

  42. While I was with them,

  43. I kept them in your name,

  44. which you've given me.

  45. I've guarded them,

  46. and not one of them has been lost,

  47. except the son of destruction,

  48. that the scripture might be fulfilled.

  49. But now,

  50. I'm coming to you,

  51. and these things I speak in the world,

  52. that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

  53. I've given them your word,

  54. and the world has hated them,

  55. because they're not of the world,

  56. just as I'm not of the world.

  57. I do not ask that you take them out of the world,

  58. but that you keep them from the evil one.

  59. They are not of the world,

  60. just as I'm not of the world.

  61. Sanctify them in the truth.

  62. Your word is truth.

  63. As you sent me into the world,

  64. so I have sent them into the world.

  65. And for their sake,

  66. I consecrate myself,

  67. that they also may be sanctified in truth.

  68. I do not ask for these only,

  69. but also for those who believe in me through their word,

  70. that they may all be one,

  71. just as you,

  72. Father,

  73. are in me,

  74. and I in you,

  75. that they also may be in us,

  76. so that the world may believe that you've sent me.

  77. The glory that you have given me,

  78. I've given to them,

  79. that they may be one,

  80. even as we are one.

  81. I in them,

  82. and you in me,

  83. that they may become perfectly one,

  84. so that the world may know that you sent me,

  85. and loved them,

  86. even as you loved me.

  87. Father,

  88. I desire that they also,

  89. whom you've given me,

  90. may be with me where I am,

  91. to see my glory,

  92. that you have given me,

  93. because you loved me,

  94. before the foundation of the world.

  95. O righteous Father,

  96. even though the world does not know you,

  97. I know you,

  98. and these know that you have sent me.

  99. I've made known to them your name,

  100. and I will continue to make it known,

  101. that the love with which you have loved me,

  102. may be in them,

  103. and I in them.

  104. Amen.

  105. All right, good morning.

  106. If I haven't met you before,

  107. my name is Rob,

  108. and I'll be speaking for the next three weeks,

  109. on the prayer,

  110. on Jesus' prayer.

  111. So it's going to be split up into three parts,

  112. just so you're aware.

  113. If you are new,

  114. we have actually been going through the book of John as well,

  115. and we've picked it up again this term,

  116. and have been going through the last few chapters,

  117. and we're up to this point now.

  118. So if you have a Bible,

  119. then please open it to John chapter 17,

    John 17 chapter mention

  120. and we will be focusing on verses 1 to 5.

  121. I think it's been really helpful,

  122. how the service was introduced by Matt,

  123. and how Alex has prepared us for this passage with the kids talk.

  124. Isn't it great how the kids talk really kind of opens things up for us,

  125. even our adult minds?

  126. And I think one of the things you might have noticed is that

  127. there's something unexpected going on in this section of the Bible.

  128. There's kind of a missing in communication between two different groups.

  129. Now, I've been married for 24 years,

  130. nine months,

  131. and 23 days,

  132. and I can tell you,

  133. I can have a whole conversation with my wife,

  134. and come away with very different expectations

  135. of what was decided in that conversation.

  136. I don't know about you.

  137. Yes? No?

  138. But the expectations that you carry into a conversation

  139. very strongly shape what you expect as the outcome,

  140. or what you think the outcome is.

  141. There's all kinds of different ways this plays out.

  142. I read some research recently that said that

  143. when people test new flavours for potato chips,

  144. what they discovered is

  145. that the suggested flavour that they give you

  146. when you taste the chip

  147. strongly influences how you perceive that taste,

  148. so much so

  149. that your perception

  150. is actually much closer to the taste

  151. that they tell you at times

  152. than it is to the taste

  153. that it actually is.

  154. We are so strongly wired

  155. to kind of expect

  156. and look for

  157. the outcome that we desire,

  158. or the outcome that we're fed,

  159. that we actually anticipate

  160. that's going to happen.

  161. And that's what we find here

  162. in this section of John.

  163. Let me just recap by saying

  164. that this has been a big week

  165. for the disciples.

  166. A big week in the sense

  167. that they were hoping

  168. and anticipating for.

  169. It's festival week.

  170. That's where they've arrived in Jerusalem.

  171. At the beginning of festival week

  172. and it began with a triumphal entry.

  173. And you can read about that in John 12, 12.

  174. The whole city gathered outside

  175. to welcome Jesus

  176. and threw their cloaks on the road.

  177. And Jesus came in

  178. from a particular entry point

  179. that meant that he came down

  180. from a hill that overlooked Jerusalem.

  181. So not only could he see Jerusalem

  182. laid out before him,

  183. but the whole of Jerusalem

  184. could look back up

  185. and see this procession.

  186. This noise,

  187. this cacophony of noise

  188. as people celebrated Jesus come in.

  189. And as they did,

  190. that crowd declared Jesus to be king.

  191. Jesus agreed with the crowd

  192. that it was time for him to be glorified,

  193. but not in the way that they expected.

  194. There seemed to be a disconnect

  195. between what the people expected

  196. on the one hand

  197. and what Jesus meant on the other.

  198. And so we have this festival week

  199. playing itself out

  200. and then we actually have the culmination

  201. of that in festival night.

  202. And this actually began

  203. with a role reversal.

  204. We all need to be washed by Jesus.

  205. Do you remember that scene?

  206. If you're not familiar

  207. with the Gospel of John,

  208. Jesus got down on his feet

  209. and did something that the slave,

  210. the house slave would do.

  211. He washed the feet of his disciples.

  212. And in doing that,

  213. he taught them

  214. that we all need to be washed by Jesus.

  215. He then taught them

  216. that all his disciples

  217. will suffer like Jesus.

  218. He promised that all his disciples

  219. would receive the Holy Spirit.

  220. But then he also said something

  221. that was really contrasting

  222. with what their expectations were.

  223. You see,

  224. Jesus,

  225. who was supposed to be

  226. the forever king,

  227. told them that he must die.

  228. So this conversation

  229. keeps playing out

  230. and it's frustrating, isn't it?

  231. Because we know the ending.

  232. We've had the spoilers.

  233. We know what happens.

  234. And we're listening

  235. and reading what these disciples

  236. are thinking and saying

  237. and just thinking,

  238. wow,

  239. there's still this disconnect

  240. between what the disciples expect

  241. and what Jesus is actually saying.

  242. And even as we have this,

  243. the development of this,

  244. this triumphal entry,

  245. this festival period,

  246. at the beginning of chapter 17,

  247. we get a transition point,

  248. a major transition point

  249. in Jesus' life.

  250. And John signals this transition

  251. in verse 1.

  252. So if you've got your Bible open

  253. or your app open,

  254. here it is,

  255. verse 1 of chapter 17.

  256. When Jesus had spoken these words,

  257. and that's the words that,

  258. the teaching that Catherine said

  259. that he'd just been finished doing

  260. before he prayed.

  261. So even when Jesus had spoken

  262. these words,

  263. he lifted up his eyes to heaven

  264. and said,

  265. Father,

  266. the hour has come.

  267. This is a major transition point

  268. in Jesus' ministry.

  269. Up until this point,

  270. he's been saying,

  271. my hour has not yet come.

  272. It's a repeated refrain

  273. throughout the gospel.

  274. In fact,

  275. if you read in chapter 2,

  276. verse 4,

  277. 4,

  278. verse 21,

  279. 4,

  280. verse 23,

  281. 5,

  282. verse 25,

  283. and 28,

  284. 7,

  285. verse 30,

  286. and 8,

  287. verse 20,

  288. then you'll see

  289. that that's what Jesus says.

  290. It's not my time.

  291. My hour has not come.

  292. And what that does

  293. is it builds anticipation

  294. for this hour.

  295. When John says in verse,

  296. chapter 12,

  297. verse 23,

  298. as he enters,

  299. you know,

  300. as he's entered Jerusalem,

  301. he says,

  302. the hour has come.

  303. Jesus' entry into Jerusalem

  304. is the transition.

  305. The focal point

  306. of Jesus' ministry

  307. is now.

  308. But there's this disconnect

  309. between what the disciples

  310. expect that to mean

  311. and what Jesus means

  312. as he says it.

  313. So we have this transition point

  314. in Jesus' ministry,

  315. this pivotal point

  316. that come,

  317. that distills right down

  318. to this transition point

  319. in the evening.

  320. Remember Simon said

  321. as he led us last week,

  322. he introduced this

  323. as the longest night

  324. in the Bible

  325. in terms of how many chapters

  326. are applied to it.

  327. It is the longest night

  328. in that sense.

  329. Bear in mind

  330. that the Jews

  331. actually determined

  332. the days

  333. by sunset,

  334. not sunrise.

  335. So for the Jews,

  336. this was actually the longest,

  337. this would have been

  338. the longest day.

  339. It would have been

  340. a part of the next day,

  341. which we'll discover

  342. what happened

  343. on that day,

  344. on that whole day,

  345. shortly.

  346. But there's this disconnect

  347. between,

  348. still,

  349. between what the disciples

  350. expect

  351. and what Jesus is saying.

  352. And as we've watched

  353. that conversation unfold,

  354. we've seen in that confusion

  355. that the disciples

  356. barely cling

  357. to the bare bones truth

  358. that Jesus is from God.

  359. They don't understand

  360. what he's going to be doing,

  361. but they can barely

  362. hang on to that.

  363. And even that belief,

  364. if you know how

  365. the story unfolds,

  366. even that belief

  367. will be tested

  368. to breaking point

  369. within the next few hours.

  370. So Jesus prays.

  371. Now, I don't know about you,

  372. but I know that

  373. if I was to consider

  374. the things that I pray for

  375. as Matt urged us to do

  376. at the beginning

  377. of the service,

  378. and I was to consider

  379. how I would like

  380. to see my life unfold

  381. into the future,

  382. I've got to say

  383. that there's a whole bunch

  384. of stuff in my life

  385. that I wouldn't have written in.

  386. There's a whole bunch

  387. of stuff that challenges

  388. my understanding

  389. of the goodness of God,

  390. his loving care,

  391. his fatherly concern

  392. for me as an individual,

  393. my expectation

  394. of what it means

  395. to be a beloved children

  396. of the all-powerful

  397. one true God.

  398. Friends, if you have

  399. any of those kind of

  400. disconnects in your life,

  401. then this prayer is for you

  402. because this prayer

  403. helps us to understand

  404. who God is,

  405. what he's about,

  406. and why his way

  407. is so much richer

  408. than ours.

  409. So Jesus prays,

  410. and that prayer

  411. has three parts.

  412. First, Jesus prays

  413. for himself

  414. in verses 1 to 5,

  415. and that's the bit

  416. we'll be looking at today.

  417. Second, he prays

  418. for his disciples,

  419. and that's in verses

  420. 6 to 19.

  421. And then thirdly,

  422. he prays for the believers

  423. to come,

  424. and that's in verses

  425. 20 to 26.

  426. But for himself,

  427. just in a nutshell,

  428. Jesus prays

  429. that the surprising glory

  430. of God

  431. would be revealed

  432. in him.

  433. Jesus prays

  434. that the surprising glory

  435. of God

  436. would be revealed

  437. in him.

  438. Prayer means petition

  439. or request.

  440. And Jesus only asks

  441. for one thing,

  442. one request,

  443. to receive glory.

  444. glory.

  445. He says in verse,

  446. the second part

  447. of verse 1.

  448. So turn back

  449. to chapter 17,

  450. verse 1.

  451. He says,

  452. Father,

  453. the hour has come.

  454. Glorify your son

  455. that the son

  456. may glorify you.

  457. That one request?

  458. Glorify your son.

  459. Now glory,

  460. that means

  461. to

  462. clothe in splendor,

  463. to make great,

  464. to exalt,

  465. to raise up high.

  466. You could even say

  467. glory,

  468. to glorify someone

  469. means to worship them.

  470. Now I think,

  471. as we think about that,

  472. I think we take it

  473. a little bit too literally.

  474. So when we read

  475. to clothe in splendor,

  476. we start,

  477. you know,

  478. some of us really

  479. spend a lot of time

  480. on our appearance.

  481. You know who you are.

  482. Some of us actually

  483. seek glory or greatness

  484. for ourselves

  485. and pursue

  486. pathways that we believe

  487. will actually fulfil that,

  488. will deliver on that.

  489. And some of us,

  490. when we're thinking

  491. about raising up,

  492. if it's not ourselves

  493. we're wanting to see exalted,

  494. we're raising up

  495. the wrong things in life,

  496. making central

  497. and vital

  498. to our happiness

  499. and satisfaction

  500. things that just

  501. can't deliver.

  502. If we dig into this concept

  503. of glory a little bit deeper,

  504. as we think about

  505. how we're misapplying it

  506. and how we should apply it,

  507. what I want to say to you

  508. is this,

  509. glory is a state

  510. that can be seen

  511. and glory is a status

  512. that can be given.

  513. There's two different aspects

  514. in terms of how

  515. the word works.

  516. If someone is glorious

  517. then we can see it

  518. when we look at them.

  519. If someone is glorious,

  520. has glory,

  521. then they can actually

  522. give glory to others.

  523. So let's think about

  524. the state perspective,

  525. seeing it in someone.

  526. And I want to point you

  527. back to an illustration

  528. the Bible uses

  529. because I think that's

  530. one of the best ways

  531. of seeing this.

  532. In Exodus chapter 33

    Exodus 33:18

  533. verses 18 and following,

  534. Moses actually asks God

  535. if he can see his glory.

  536. Let me read out

  537. these verses for you.

  538. They're up on the screen

  539. so you don't have to

  540. flick back and look at it.

  541. Moses said,

  542. please show me your glory.

  543. This is on top

  544. of Mount Sinai

  545. as he's having the conversation

  546. about receiving

  547. the Ten Commandments.

  548. And God says to him,

  549. I will make all my goodness

  550. pass before you

  551. and will proclaim

  552. before you my name,

  553. the Lord.

  554. And I will be gracious

  555. to whom I will be gracious

  556. and show mercy

  557. on whom I will show mercy.

  558. But he said,

  559. you cannot see my face

  560. for man shall not see me

  561. and live.

  562. And the Lord said,

  563. behold,

  564. there is a place by me

  565. where you shall stand

  566. on the rock

  567. and when my glory

  568. passes by,

  569. I will put you

  570. in a cleft of the rock

  571. and I will cover you

  572. with my hand

  573. until I have passed by.

  574. Then I will take away

  575. my hand

  576. and you shall see my back

  577. but my face

  578. shall not be seen.

  579. What we discover here

  580. is that God is glorious

  581. by nature.

  582. So glorious

  583. that we cannot

  584. look at him

  585. and live

  586. unless

  587. he places himself

  588. in the way

  589. as we do see him.

  590. So glory is a state

  591. that we can see

  592. and it's a status

  593. that can be given.

  594. It can be shared

  595. with others.

  596. God only allowed

  597. Moses,

  598. if we go on to that

  599. and read that story

  600. further on

  601. when that event

  602. actually does happen

  603. so that's God

  604. telling him

  605. what he's going to do

  606. and then shortly

  607. afterwards

  608. God actually does it.

  609. God only allowed

  610. Moses to get

  611. that filtered glimpse

  612. but it had an effect.

  613. When Moses came down

  614. off the mountain

  615. where he saw

  616. this glimpse of God

  617. he glowed

  618. and not just a little bit

  619. so much so

  620. and we can read

  621. about this

  622. in Exodus 34

    Exodus 34:29

  623. verse 29

  624. and following

  625. if you'd like to

  626. but so much so

  627. that when the people

  628. saw Moses

  629. they ran from him

  630. in terror.

  631. He had to call them back

  632. say no it's just me

  633. and even that wasn't enough

  634. then you know

  635. him speaking Moses voice

  636. and saying yeah

  637. it's me

  638. don't worry

  639. calm down

  640. they actually had to

  641. introduce a rule

  642. to cope

  643. with his glowing

  644. his glowiness

  645. for want of a better word.

  646. after Moses had been

  647. up on the mountain

  648. in God's presence

  649. and when he came

  650. back down again

  651. from the mountain

  652. he had to wear a veil.

  653. God's glory can be seen

  654. and in the presence

  655. of God's glory

  656. it actually pervades

  657. the things around him

  658. it pushes back darkness.

  659. I can only imagine

  660. what it must have been

  661. like for Adam and Eve

  662. actually walking

  663. in the unfiltered

  664. presence of God

  665. what they must have

  666. what life must have

  667. been like for them.

  668. What we read here

  669. is that God's glory

  670. can be seen

  671. and it can be shared

  672. with others.

  673. But if Jesus is God

  674. why is he praying

  675. for glory?

  676. Surely he has a right

  677. to it.

  678. He could have taken it

  679. if he wanted.

  680. And if we think back again

  681. this is what Satan

  682. tempted Adam and Eve

  683. to in the Garden of Eden.

  684. Not accepting the glory

  685. that God gave them

  686. as his image bearers

  687. in the world

  688. as his vice regents

  689. to rule over the world

  690. under him.

  691. Not accepting that

  692. but desiring

  693. and taking more.

  694. And this is what

  695. Satan tried to tempt

  696. Jesus to

  697. in the wilderness

  698. as well.

  699. Not accepting

  700. the Father's will

  701. for him

  702. but establishing

  703. a kingdom of his own

  704. under Satan instead.

  705. And friends

  706. this is what Satan

  707. is tempting you to

  708. every day.

  709. Not accepting

  710. the Father's will

  711. for you

  712. but thinking

  713. that your plan

  714. is better.

  715. The source

  716. of glory

  717. if glory can be given

  718. the source of glory

  719. is vitally important.

  720. And John makes

  721. this point

  722. in a little narrator's

  723. insert in John

    John 12:36–43

  724. chapter 12

  725. verses 36 to 43.

  726. So he observes

  727. that many people

  728. believed in Jesus

  729. but kept it secret.

  730. why?

  731. Because they love

  732. the glory that comes

  733. from man

  734. more than the glory

  735. that comes from God.

  736. We read in chapter 12

  737. verse 43.

  738. They love the glory

  739. that comes from man

  740. more than the glory

  741. that comes from God.

  742. Where do you get

  743. your glory from?

  744. Jesus had a right

  745. to glory.

  746. He could have taken it

  747. if he wanted.

  748. But by praying

  749. for glory

  750. Jesus chose

  751. to be dependent

  752. on the Father

  753. for glory

  754. rather than

  755. seeking his own.

  756. To be guided

  757. by the Father

  758. toward true glory

  759. rather than

  760. finding his own.

  761. One request

  762. Jesus had

  763. in that prayer

  764. in that first part

  765. of the prayer

  766. for himself

  767. that God

  768. would glorify him.

  769. But even

  770. as he asks

  771. to be glorified

  772. Jesus had

  773. his eyes

  774. on something

  775. beyond that.

  776. His ultimate goal

  777. wasn't receiving glory.

  778. He was all about

  779. giving it.

  780. As surely

  781. as he had

  782. one request

  783. he had one goal

  784. and that was

  785. to give glory.

  786. And we read about it

  787. in that verse

  788. we just read

  789. earlier

  790. the second half

  791. of verse 1.

  792. Father the hour

  793. has come

  794. glorify your son

  795. that the son

  796. may glorify you.

  797. Even in receiving

  798. glory

  799. Jesus' goal

  800. was to give glory.

  801. Receiving

  802. was his means

  803. of giving.

  804. So in this

  805. request

  806. what we get

  807. is more than

  808. a glimpse

  809. into the relationships

  810. within the Trinity.

  811. Father glorifying

  812. the son

  813. son glorifying

  814. the father

  815. neither seeking

  816. what was rightfully

  817. theirs

  818. both seeking

  819. to give

  820. to share.

  821. father

  822. son

  823. and holy

  824. spirit

  825. raising each

  826. other up

  827. exalting

  828. each other

  829. devoted

  830. to glorifying

  831. each other.

  832. Friends

  833. this has been

  834. the goal

  835. since the world

  836. before the world

  837. existed.

  838. It's just

  839. that

  840. all of time

  841. all of time

  842. itself

  843. has actually

  844. been moving

  845. toward this

  846. specific hour

  847. when that

  848. glory

  849. would be

  850. revealed.

  851. This moment

  852. in Jesus'

  853. life

  854. this moment

  855. in world

  856. history

  857. and it's

  858. here

  859. in these

  860. verses.

  861. Think about

  862. Jesus praying

  863. this prayer

  864. and think

  865. about the

  866. kind of

  867. ministry

  868. that they've

  869. actually seen

  870. him in terms

  871. of how his

  872. ministry unfolds

  873. and what

  874. happens when

  875. he prays

  876. and when

  877. he prays

  878. prayers

  879. prays.

  880. I don't

  881. know about

  882. you but

  883. we have

  884. this tradition

  885. where we

  886. say grace

  887. before meals

  888. and there

  889. are certain

  890. times like

  891. Christmas dinner

  892. or things like

  893. that.

  894. I can remember

  895. as a child

  896. it was such

  897. a trial

  898. to sit

  899. through grace.

  900. Ever since

  901. I've been

  902. I can

  903. remember

  904. I think

  905. there's a

  906. difference

  907. between grace

  908. and prayer

  909. and that

  910. is that

  911. grace is

  912. only like

  913. two sentences

  914. long or less

  915. and anything

  916. longer than

  917. that is

  918. prayer.

  919. Grace is

  920. what belongs

  921. before a

  922. meal and

  923. you'd be

  924. sitting there

  925. waiting for

  926. this meal

  927. to happen

  928. and someone

  929. because it

  930. was a special

  931. occasion would

  932. take that

  933. moment to

  934. launch into

  935. this huge

  936. prayer and

  937. you'd just

  938. be wanting

  939. to open

  940. your eyes

  941. and look

  942. at the

  943. food and

  944. perhaps

  945. even steal

  946. some which

  947. I used

  948. to do

  949. because prayers

  950. couldn't get

  951. that long

  952. that I could

  953. actually finish

  954. chewing before

  955. people even

  956. noticed.

  957. There are

  958. times when

  959. someone is

  960. praying and

  961. you're looking

  962. beyond it to

  963. the gloriousness

  964. that's to

  965. come and

  966. you've got to

  967. wonder what

  968. did these

  969. disciples think?

  970. Were they

  971. expecting something

  972. to happen

  973. here and

  974. were they

  975. almost tempted

  976. to open

  977. their eyes

  978. and see

  979. Jesus is

  980. praying for

  981. himself to

  982. be glorified?

  983. What in

  984. the world

  985. is going

  986. to happen?

  987. The people

  988. already wanted

  989. Jesus to be

  990. king.

  991. We want

  992. Jesus to be

  993. king,

  994. they're

  995. thinking.

  996. Let's see

  997. what Jesus

  998. does as

  999. he prays

  1000. his prayer.

  1001. I've got to

  1002. tell you now

  1003. that it's even

  1004. better than

  1005. what they

  1006. hope for.

  1007. This is more

  1008. than a

  1009. New Year

  1010. firework

  1011. show to

  1012. watch and

  1013. be wowed

  1014. by.

  1015. This mutual

  1016. glorification

  1017. is also

  1018. an invitation

  1019. to us.

  1020. in the

  1021. Trinitarian

  1022. relationship

  1023. we're getting

  1024. a glimpse

  1025. at something

  1026. that we're

  1027. actually being

  1028. invited into.

  1029. It's not

  1030. all about

  1031. Jesus becoming

  1032. king.

  1033. It's about

  1034. what that

  1035. king does

  1036. as a ruler

  1037. of our

  1038. lives.

  1039. See we have

  1040. one request

  1041. which is to

  1042. Jesus be

  1043. glorified and

  1044. we have

  1045. one goal

  1046. for Jesus

  1047. to actually

  1048. give that

  1049. glory to the

  1050. father as

  1051. much as the

  1052. father gives

  1053. it to him.

  1054. And then we

  1055. have this

  1056. plan behind

  1057. that glory

  1058. which starts

  1059. to unfold

  1060. in these

  1061. next verses.

  1062. And that's

  1063. to know

  1064. this glorious

  1065. God.

  1066. There's a

  1067. plan behind

  1068. this display

  1069. of glory.

  1070. Yes we

  1071. should look

  1072. at this

  1073. extraordinary

  1074. God and

  1075. marvel but

  1076. there's more

  1077. to it.

  1078. There's a

  1079. plan behind

  1080. Jesus'

  1081. request that

  1082. all of

  1083. history has

  1084. been moving

  1085. toward.

  1086. That we

  1087. might know

  1088. this God

  1089. of glory.

  1090. Jesus begins

  1091. to speak about

  1092. this plan in

  1093. verse 2 and

  1094. he says this

  1095. since you

  1096. have given

  1097. him authority

  1098. over all

  1099. flesh to

  1100. give eternal

  1101. life to all

  1102. whom you

  1103. have given

  1104. him.

  1105. Jesus'

  1106. request for

  1107. glory is

  1108. based on

  1109. God's

  1110. eternal

  1111. plan.

  1112. He's asking

  1113. for that

  1114. plan to

  1115. be fulfilled

  1116. in him.

  1117. So let

  1118. us look at

  1119. the requests

  1120. of verse

  1121. 1 and the

  1122. basis,

  1123. the since

  1124. or because

  1125. of verse

  1126. 2.

  1127. I think I've

  1128. got that

  1129. in a slide.

  1130. Have I?

  1131. Is it going to

  1132. show up?

  1133. Nope, it's got

  1134. boxes on it.

  1135. That's the one.

  1136. Yeah, okay.

  1137. So there you

  1138. can see,

  1139. glorify your

  1140. son that the

  1141. son may glorify

  1142. you on one

  1143. side.

  1144. And then you

  1145. have you've

  1146. given him

  1147. authority over

  1148. all flesh on

  1149. the other to

  1150. give eternal

  1151. life to all

  1152. whom you have

  1153. given him.

  1154. glory on the

  1155. basis that the

  1156. plan has

  1157. always been

  1158. that God

  1159. has given

  1160. him authority

  1161. over all

  1162. flesh to

  1163. give eternal

  1164. life to all

  1165. whom the

  1166. father has

  1167. given him.

  1168. When Jesus

  1169. asks for glory,

  1170. he doesn't

  1171. simply ask for

  1172. something he

  1173. wants.

  1174. He asks in

  1175. line with

  1176. what the

  1177. father has

  1178. planned.

  1179. It's a lesson

  1180. we can learn

  1181. there, isn't

  1182. there, about

  1183. prayer from

  1184. that example.

  1185. And the

  1186. plan in

  1187. verse 2 is

  1188. to grant

  1189. eternal life

  1190. to those the

  1191. father has

  1192. given him.

  1193. If they can

  1194. understand this,

  1195. then they'll

  1196. understand what

  1197. Jesus does

  1198. next.

  1199. It makes

  1200. sense of what

  1201. he's about to

  1202. do.

  1203. Where he's

  1204. about to

  1205. go.

  1206. And why

  1207. that has

  1208. anything to

  1209. do with

  1210. glory.

  1211. And just

  1212. in case

  1213. they're not

  1214. quite

  1215. understanding,

  1216. Jesus takes

  1217. a moment to

  1218. clarify things.

  1219. And he

  1220. actually explains

  1221. what eternal

  1222. life is in

  1223. verse 3.

  1224. He says

  1225. these words,

  1226. And this

  1227. is eternal

  1228. life,

  1229. that they

  1230. know you,

  1231. the only

  1232. true God,

  1233. and Jesus

  1234. Christ,

  1235. whom you

  1236. have sent.

  1237. life.

  1238. Did you

  1239. notice how

  1240. the life

  1241. Jesus gives

  1242. is expressed

  1243. in terms of

  1244. quantity,

  1245. eternal life?

  1246. But the

  1247. definition that

  1248. Jesus gives

  1249. is expressed

  1250. in terms of

  1251. quality.

  1252. It's a life

  1253. of knowing

  1254. God.

  1255. life.

  1256. It's the

  1257. fullness of

  1258. life that

  1259. Jesus spoke

  1260. of back in

  1261. John chapter

    John 10:10

  1262. 10 verse

  1263. 10 when he

  1264. says,

  1265. I have

  1266. come that

  1267. you may

  1268. have life

  1269. and have

  1270. it to

  1271. the full

  1272. abundantly.

  1273. It's the

  1274. thing that

  1275. Satan stole

  1276. that Jesus

  1277. is offering

  1278. back.

  1279. Perhaps

  1280. Jesus speaks

  1281. in terms of

  1282. eternity to

  1283. give his

  1284. disciples a

  1285. bigger perspective

  1286. of his imminent

  1287. death.

  1288. Like this

  1289. particular day

  1290. he will die.

  1291. Perhaps he

  1292. uses the word

  1293. eternal this

  1294. time rather

  1295. than abundant

  1296. as he did

  1297. last time

  1298. because he

  1299. wants to

  1300. help them

  1301. through the

  1302. next three

  1303. days.

  1304. But the

  1305. bottom line

  1306. is this,

  1307. eternal life

  1308. is about

  1309. knowing God,

  1310. knowing the

  1311. one true

  1312. God and

  1313. Jesus Christ

  1314. whom he

  1315. sent.

  1316. God is

  1317. about making

  1318. himself known

  1319. and the

  1320. point at

  1321. which we

  1322. see God

  1323. in all

  1324. his glory

  1325. is at

  1326. the cross.

  1327. One

  1328. request,

  1329. one goal,

  1330. one plan

  1331. and one

  1332. result that

  1333. God is

  1334. glorified at

  1335. the cross.

  1336. Jesus

  1337. fulfills the

  1338. father's plan

  1339. when he dies

  1340. for us.

  1341. When Jesus

  1342. prays God

  1343. glorify me,

  1344. he's praying

  1345. bring on

  1346. the cross.

  1347. cross.

  1348. And when

  1349. Jesus dies

  1350. on that

  1351. cross,

  1352. we get

  1353. God for

  1354. eternity.

  1355. But more

  1356. than that,

  1357. we actually

  1358. see God

  1359. more clearly

  1360. than we

  1361. ever have

  1362. done before.

  1363. Throughout

  1364. all of

  1365. history,

  1366. this is the

  1367. point when

  1368. we see God

  1369. most clearly.

  1370. Through this

  1371. moment in

  1372. history,

  1373. we see who

  1374. God is

  1375. with

  1376. absolute

  1377. clarity.

  1378. In verse

  1379. 4,

  1380. Jesus

  1381. prays,

  1382. he goes

  1383. on to

  1384. pray,

  1385. I glorified

  1386. you on

  1387. earth,

  1388. having

  1389. accomplished

  1390. the work

  1391. that you

  1392. gave me

  1393. to do.

  1394. And just

  1395. think about

  1396. this,

  1397. because though

  1398. it's past

  1399. tense,

  1400. what Jesus

  1401. is doing

  1402. is actually

  1403. speaking of

  1404. his whole

  1405. ministry

  1406. here.

  1407. It's

  1408. literally

  1409. hours away

  1410. from being

  1411. completed.

  1412. So he's

  1413. speaking about

  1414. it as if

  1415. it's all

  1416. done,

  1417. as an

  1418. entire

  1419. completed

  1420. work.

  1421. And in

  1422. its entire

  1423. completed

  1424. work,

  1425. it can be

  1426. summed up

  1427. as this,

  1428. a life

  1429. lived to

  1430. glorify the

  1431. Father.

  1432. The cross

  1433. is Christ

  1434. glorified.

  1435. At the

  1436. cross,

  1437. we come to

  1438. know the

  1439. one true

  1440. God like

  1441. never before

  1442. or since.

  1443. The way

  1444. God

  1445. describes

  1446. himself to

  1447. Moses

  1448. comes to

  1449. life in

  1450. Jesus.

  1451. If we

  1452. look back

  1453. at that

  1454. moment,

  1455. Moses did

  1456. get that

  1457. glimpse of

  1458. God back

  1459. in Exodus

    Exodus 34 chapter mention

  1460. chapter 34.

  1461. We read

  1462. these words,

  1463. Exodus 34,

  1464. 6 and

  1465. following.

  1466. This is

  1467. who God

  1468. declares

  1469. himself to

  1470. be.

  1471. He says

  1472. this,

  1473. the Lord,

  1474. the Lord,

  1475. a merciful

  1476. and gracious,

  1477. slow to

  1478. anger and

  1479. abounding in

  1480. steadfast love

  1481. and faithfulness,

  1482. keeping

  1483. steadfast love

  1484. for thousands,

  1485. forgiving iniquity

  1486. and transgression

  1487. and sin,

  1488. but who will

  1489. by no means

  1490. clear the

  1491. guilty,

  1492. visiting the

  1493. iniquity of

  1494. the fathers

  1495. on the

  1496. children and

  1497. the children's

  1498. children to

  1499. the third

  1500. and the

  1501. fourth

  1502. generation.

  1503. The way

  1504. God describes

  1505. himself to

  1506. Moses comes

  1507. to life in

  1508. the person

  1509. of Jesus.

  1510. Merciful and

  1511. gracious,

  1512. slow to

  1513. anger,

  1514. abounding in

  1515. steadfast love

  1516. and faithfulness,

  1517. keeping

  1518. steadfast love

  1519. for thousands,

  1520. forgiving

  1521. iniquity and

  1522. transgression,

  1523. but who will

  1524. by no means

  1525. clear the

  1526. guilty.

  1527. It sounds

  1528. like a

  1529. contradiction,

  1530. doesn't it?

  1531. But friends,

  1532. even as we

  1533. talk about

  1534. this,

  1535. when you

  1536. think about

  1537. glory,

  1538. is this

  1539. where your

  1540. mind goes?

  1541. When you

  1542. think about

  1543. being raised

  1544. up high or

  1545. exalted,

  1546. when you

  1547. think about

  1548. being clothed

  1549. in splendour,

  1550. when you

  1551. think about

  1552. the greatness

  1553. there could

  1554. possibly be

  1555. in life,

  1556. even when

  1557. you think

  1558. about the

  1559. greatness of

  1560. God,

  1561. is the

  1562. crucifixion

  1563. seeing what

  1564. you imagine?

  1565. Is the

  1566. cross there

  1567. in your

  1568. thinking?

  1569. Every day

  1570. I walk

  1571. our dog

  1572. on Redhead

  1573. Beach.

  1574. I've got a

  1575. picture of

  1576. the last,

  1577. this is the

  1578. last walk

  1579. I went

  1580. on.

  1581. Every day,

  1582. it's different,

  1583. it's just a

  1584. different version

  1585. of beautiful.

  1586. Every day

  1587. that scene

  1588. tells me

  1589. something

  1590. about the

  1591. character of

  1592. God.

  1593. But the

  1594. cross,

  1595. the cross

  1596. introduces me

  1597. to him

  1598. personally.

  1599. Jesus

  1600. wanted us

  1601. to know

  1602. God

  1603. personally.

  1604. So Jesus

  1605. wanted

  1606. the glory

  1607. of the

  1608. cross.

  1609. He prayed

  1610. for it.

  1611. He asked

  1612. for it

  1613. because it

  1614. glorified the

  1615. father and

  1616. it rescued

  1617. us.

  1618. Only in

  1619. his work at

  1620. the cross

  1621. can he say

  1622. in verse

  1623. five,

  1624. and now

  1625. father,

  1626. glorify me

  1627. in your

  1628. presence

  1629. with the

  1630. glory that

  1631. I had

  1632. with you

  1633. before the

  1634. world

  1635. existed.

  1636. glorify me

  1637. in your

  1638. own

  1639. presence

  1640. with the

  1641. glory that

  1642. I had

  1643. with you

  1644. before the

  1645. world

  1646. existed.

  1647. You know,

  1648. later in

  1649. John's life,

  1650. he actually

  1651. got the

  1652. privilege of

  1653. getting a

  1654. glimpse into

  1655. the throne

  1656. room of

  1657. God.

  1658. It's in

  1659. Revelation

  1660. chapter five

  1661. that it's

  1662. recorded.

  1663. A part of

  1664. that vision

  1665. is recorded.

  1666. in it,

  1667. in that

  1668. throne room,

  1669. he saw a

  1670. lion who

  1671. looked like

  1672. a lamb

  1673. who had

  1674. been slain.

  1675. Friends,

  1676. Jesus,

  1677. God the

  1678. Son,

  1679. still bears

  1680. the marks

  1681. of his

  1682. glory.

  1683. And thank

  1684. God that he

  1685. does.

  1686. Because it's

  1687. only through

  1688. the cross that

  1689. we get to

  1690. know him for

  1691. eternity.

  1692. Jesus

  1693. prayed for

  1694. glory.

  1695. He chose

  1696. the cross.

  1697. We struggle

  1698. through life

  1699. enduring things

  1700. that we,

  1701. you know,

  1702. we find

  1703. almost impossible

  1704. to bear at

  1705. times.

  1706. Jesus chose

  1707. the worst

  1708. possible death.

  1709. And he

  1710. chose it

  1711. to show us

  1712. God's glorious

  1713. nature.

  1714. he chose

  1715. it as the

  1716. means of

  1717. ransoming

  1718. us.

  1719. Friends,

  1720. that glorious

  1721. cross is an

  1722. invitation to

  1723. know God

  1724. personally.

  1725. And as we

  1726. reflect on it,

  1727. when our

  1728. lives approximate

  1729. the life that

  1730. Jesus lived

  1731. and the glory

  1732. and the glory

  1733. and the glory

  1734. sought,

  1735. then God is

  1736. glorified in

  1737. us too.

  1738. Think about

  1739. this.

  1740. If this were

  1741. to shape our

  1742. lives,

  1743. to recognize

  1744. that there

  1745. is just

  1746. one way

  1747. in this

  1748. life to get

  1749. back into

  1750. relationship with

  1751. God.

  1752. How much we

  1753. would treasure

  1754. Christ and the

  1755. work that he

  1756. did on our

  1757. behalf.

  1758. How tightly we

  1759. would hold to

  1760. that as a

  1761. center point of

  1762. our lives.

  1763. How much it

  1764. would shape how

  1765. we live toward

  1766. each other.

  1767. No longer

  1768. grasping for

  1769. glory, no

  1770. longer seeking

  1771. greatness,

  1772. desiring to

  1773. exalt ourselves

  1774. or putting

  1775. our worth in

  1776. things that are

  1777. just so empty,

  1778. but delighting in

  1779. him alone.

  1780. no longer

  1781. grasping, but

  1782. giving.

  1783. I've got to

  1784. tell you that

  1785. one of the

  1786. things that I've

  1787. noticed as a

  1788. pastor is how

  1789. difficult it is

  1790. to walk with

  1791. someone through

  1792. a situation where

  1793. forgiveness is

  1794. required, where

  1795. one person is

  1796. wounded and

  1797. another person

  1798. is responsible

  1799. for it.

  1800. it is just

  1801. so, so

  1802. difficult.

  1803. But imagine

  1804. if we had the

  1805. mind of Christ

  1806. in this.

  1807. Imagine if our

  1808. lives were

  1809. shaped by the

  1810. glory that he

  1811. sought.

  1812. Imagine if our

  1813. absolute and

  1814. utter delight is

  1815. in being

  1816. reconciled, our

  1817. willingness to

  1818. overlook any

  1819. hurt or grief

  1820. or grievance

  1821. that we have.

  1822. not to ignore

  1823. it, but to

  1824. deal with it in

  1825. the context of

  1826. someone who so

  1827. wants to get

  1828. beyond it and

  1829. back to loving

  1830. that person,

  1831. that that is

  1832. what fills their

  1833. vision.

  1834. Wouldn't it be

  1835. wonderful if we

  1836. as a church

  1837. shaped our lives

  1838. on this kind of

  1839. glory seeking,

  1840. as we serve

  1841. each other,

  1842. as we eagerly

  1843. and earnestly

  1844. desire to see

  1845. each other

  1846. raised up?

  1847. What a

  1848. wonderful thing

  1849. that would be.

  1850. Friends, the

  1851. cross, the

  1852. cross itself is

  1853. the son glorified.

  1854. The cross is

  1855. the father

  1856. glorified.

  1857. And when our

  1858. lives approximate

  1859. the life that

  1860. Jesus lived and

  1861. the glory that

  1862. Jesus sought,

  1863. then God is

  1864. glorified in us

  1865. too.

  1866. Christ, let's

  1867. drink.

  1868. Thank you.

  1869. Thank you.

  1870. Thank you.
