  1. okay um when i come back up on the screen again well even if i don't come back on here i go here

  2. i go uh i'm going to read the bible now and then we'll we'll spend a few minutes just um thinking

  3. about one peter chapter one and i just can't help thinking that at this time it's just lovely to

  4. hear about jesus total commitment to us and our salvation secure there's nothing else much secure

  5. in this world at least it feels like nothing else much secure in the world this week but our

  6. salvation is just as secure as it was last week last year last century and we can never hear enough

  7. of that especially that time so this time so thanks alex now i'm going to read from one peter chapter

  8. one uh the first nine verses and then we'll spend a few minutes just uh thinking through some of those

  9. things so hopefully um you've got your bibles open uh maybe you can they said yesterday there might be

  10. some complication with having um electronic devices and zoom open so you might have to go back and use

  11. an old-fashioned uh word bible like like i do anyway here we go so verse one of chapter one of one peter

  12. peter an apostle of jesus christ to those who are elect exiles of the dispersion in pontus galatia

  13. capadocca peter anna cappadocia asia and bithynia according to the foreknowledge of god the father

  14. in the sanctification of the spirit for obedience to jesus christ and for sprinkling with his blood

  15. may grace and peace be multiplied to you

  16. blessed be the god and father of our lord jesus christ according to his great mercy he has caused us

  17. to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of jesus christ from the dead to an

  18. inheritance that is imperishable undefiled unfading kept in heaven for you who by god's power are being

  19. guarded through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time in this you rejoice

  20. though now for a little while if necessary you have been grieved by various trials so the tested

  21. genuineness of your faith more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire

  22. may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of jesus christ

  23. though you have not seen him you love him though you do not see him now you believe him and rejoice

  24. with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory obtaining the outcome of your faith the salvation of

  25. your souls well rob's already said uh summed it all up hasn't he what a week what a week it's been

  26. just imagine something as microscopically small as a virus totally disrupting interrupting our life

  27. if not changing it forever that great thing that we've all talked about over the years that australian

  28. way of life that socially we've moved from being party central as a nation to being a nation in nervous

  29. isolation economic talk of economic growth has moved to talk of economic recession and even depression

  30. pretty bleak our health system that a week ago most of us would have thought would have been able to

  31. deal with any eventuality is now threatened with being overwhelmed the aussie spirit so-called aussie

  32. spirit of looking after your mate well that's fast becoming a look after yourself type attitude isn't it

  33. hoarding panic buying and then as rob's already mentioned our church family now for the first time ever

  34. being forced to meet online trying to be together while being separate now it's already been mentioned

  35. a few times that as always change creates fear we've heard a few of them this morning and it's fear of the

  36. unfamiliar fear of loss of relationships and growing aloneness fear of losing your job fear of ability to

  37. provide for your family fear of losing your retirement nest egg as you see the stock market collapse

  38. fears even of contracting covered 19 fear of death i mean the fears the list of fears goes on and on and on

  39. but you know what my biggest fear has been this week doing what i'm doing now speaking online i'm not so much

  40. worried about covered 19 i thought actually come friday night that might have been a really good option

  41. rather than preaching online but here i am so fears they're very real fears they'll be very specific

  42. to each of us but regardless of what they are each of them impacts on our faith in the present

  43. and impact on our hope for the future and you see that one up in the the quotation up in the screen

  44. uh so one i saw this week if we view ourselves as besieged victims who need to go into hiding

  45. then we will cultivate fear and hoarding if we view ourselves as a community working hard to protect

  46. the most vulnerable among us then that will have its own outcome so our hope mindset really impacts the

  47. way we act and think everybody needs some sort of hope for the future we're shaped by our hopes mindset

  48. which drives us to list the things we believe we need to be secure and that happens from when we wake

  49. in the morning we express our hopes mindsets so let me ask you there's a hopes mindset up on the screen

  50. happy new year that's a that's a form of hope let me ask you this morning what was the first thing you

  51. hoped for when you woke up this morning now perhaps like me you just hoped that all this would go away

  52. and we'd get back to life as normal as as life as we know it or perhaps it was that my me and my loved

  53. ones would be healthy that my home and possessions and wealth might survive that i might still be able to

  54. get that lifestyle that i've worked for all my life and which now seems to be perhaps slipping away

  55. our hopes mindset will shape the way we speak and it will shape the what we invest our time and energy

  56. and resources in put simply we throw ourselves into doing things that we believe will make our hope a

  57. reality and coming up in the script at the moment there's a couple of more quotations about that

  58. we're hearing these sort of hopes on the tv news every day at one extreme there's a form of despair

  59. hopelessness driving panic pushing people to get what they want regardless of others

  60. at the other extreme then there's the bland optimism of positive thinking

  61. we've heard it so many times you know we will get through this crisis we will come out the other

  62. side stronger and better than ever and there are numerous options in between those two extremes

  63. but whatever option you go for we need hope wherever you sit on that spectrum we need hope

  64. and here's the really important thing the object of our hope is the thing that's really critical

  65. if the person or thing we invest our hopes into fails to deliver then we're going to crash and burn

  66. big time we'll be consumed with fear we'll be consumed with disappointment we'll be consumed with

  67. frustration because our hopes are tantalizing they're there but we can't quite get a hold of them

  68. we can't make them secure so let's turn to peter's letter and say

  69. that real hope is inseparably tied to relationship with jesus so i'm going to read the first few

  70. verses when they come up on the screen here here we go peter an apostle of jesus christ to those who

  71. are elect exiles of the dispersion in pontus calesia cappadocia asia and bithynia according to the

  72. foreknowledge of god the father in the sanctification of the spirit for obedience to jesus christ and

  73. for sprinkling with his blood may grace and peace be multiplied to you now that's the context in

  74. which peter's going to tell us about our living hope and it's a really important context to remember

  75. he's writing to christians that are scattered all over the roman empire they're living like refugees or

  76. exiles in days of severe persecution incredible insecurity for them these are christians who have

  77. been marginalized isolated or even cut off from their families and cut off from local village life

  78. simply because they've become christians we can feel their fear fear for themselves fear for their

  79. families we can feel their sense of isolation their sense of dislocation their pain their suffering

  80. they become refugees in their own land things look familiar and yet they're so unfamiliar

  81. not unlike i think i've been feeling this week

  82. everything that's comfortable and familiar is there but it's not there

  83. we sense their longing longing like refugees to know that somebody cares that they're valued as people

  84. they want to have a home they want to have security they want to know that a better life is ahead

  85. given the awfulness of their current predicament

  86. it's that context that peter reminds the christians that we have a living hope

  87. not just wishful thinking

  88. not just positive thinking

  89. it's a hope which is ours by right of birth it is our inheritance

  90. it cannot be stripped away from us

  91. as as alex said in his children's talks as christians we're united with christ

  92. not only in his death but in his resurrection because he is raised to a new secure life

  93. with the father in heaven we can be absolutely certain that we also

  94. will be raised to this secure life in heaven we haven't actually got there to experience it in

  95. in its fullness yet but we are tied into it now by virtue of being tied into christ

  96. because christ is living we have living hope it's that simple

  97. in and through relationship with him now peter goes on then to spell out the twin truths

  98. that underpin that that real living hope that security for the future

  99. the first is in verse 4

  100. so we'll get that up on the screen in a sec

  101. our inheritance is kept in heaven for us

  102. blessed be the god and father of our lord jesus christ

  103. according to his great mercy he has caused us to be born again

  104. to a living hope through the resurrection of jesus christ from the dead

  105. to an inheritance that is imperishable undefiled unfading and

  106. kept in heaven for you

  107. now i've used this illustration before but children

  108. when children leave home parents often present them things that they've collected over the years

  109. things that the parents have kept because they know jolly well if they give them to the kids

  110. uh they would have been lost they would have mutilated

  111. so the parents keep them

  112. the kids can't get their hands on them and so they're there to be presented at the right moment

  113. well in the same way our heavenly father

  114. has our security

  115. our salvation our future stored up in heaven for us

  116. we can't get our hands on it

  117. therefore we can't mess it up

  118. and that's surely what we'd do if it was down to us

  119. but it's kept for us ready to go

  120. and able to do everything that christ promised

  121. it's tamper proof

  122. the second truth then is

  123. we are kept by the father so you see the twin truth

  124. our salvation is kept for us

  125. and then the other side of the coin is we are kept by the father

  126. so that we will might eventually enjoy our inheritance

  127. verse 5

  128. continuing on the sentence

  129. who by god's power are being guarded through

  130. for a salvation ready to be revealed

  131. thank you

  132. in the last time

  133. why can i be confident

  134. why can you be confident as a christian

  135. you will persevere and you will ultimately make it home to heaven

  136. answer

  137. because god preserves you

  138. god will preserve you

  139. he's promised to preserve you

  140. for the inheritance that he's already set aside for you

  141. he's already storing for you

  142. and he's going to bring the two of them together

  143. in at some point in time in the future

  144. we can't see the full security we have now

  145. and so we sometimes doubt it

  146. we can't see the the beauty of what we have in its fullness

  147. and so we sometimes doubt it

  148. but one day

  149. jesus will come back

  150. he will take us to be with him in heaven

  151. where we will experience in full

  152. what he has stored up for us

  153. and which we can only now appreciate through faith

  154. now friends

  155. that means our hopes mindset

  156. as christians

  157. is not in how we can mold our lives

  158. by our own resources

  159. it is not wishful thinking

  160. it is not bland optimism of positive thinking

  161. our confidence now and into the future

  162. is based on christ's death

  163. and resurrection in the past

  164. there's not a chance

  165. we will miss out

  166. on what god intends us to have

  167. because both sides

  168. are in god's hands

  169. however

  170. there's another wonderful truth

  171. that's that's brilliant

  172. so far

  173. but there's another wonderful truth

  174. in these verses

  175. and that is

  176. living hope

  177. massively transformed

  178. our perspective on suffering

  179. now

  180. peter doesn't just present this truth

  181. the twin truths

  182. of hope

  183. in a vacuum

  184. he means us to connect them into real life

  185. and here's the connection into real life

  186. that these twin truths

  187. massively transformed

  188. our perspective on suffering

  189. let me just read these verses again to you

  190. they're up in your screen now

  191. in this you rejoice

  192. that is in this truth

  193. twin truths of salvation

  194. though now for a little while

  195. if necessary

  196. you have been grieved by various trials

  197. so the tested genuineness of your faith

  198. more precious than gold

  199. that perishes though is tested by fire

  200. may be found to result in praise

  201. and glory and honor

  202. at the revelation of jesus christ

  203. though you have not seen him

  204. you love him

  205. though you do not see him now

  206. you believe in him

  207. and rejoice with joy

  208. that is inexpressible

  209. and filled with glory

  210. obtaining the outcome of your faith

  211. the salvation of your souls

  212. notice that in verse 6

  213. it is in living

  214. in this living hope

  215. you rejoice

  216. the same thing again

  217. in verse 8

  218. you rejoice

  219. get this

  220. you rejoice with inexpressible joy

  221. filled with glory

  222. now what does that mean

  223. well

  224. it's

  225. I think it's probably too big

  226. for me to actually

  227. completely expand

  228. and exhaust

  229. but let me

  230. let me just try this on you

  231. because I think this is

  232. this is really helpful

  233. what it means is this

  234. when I live confidently

  235. in the light of those

  236. twin truths

  237. that my salvation

  238. is kept for me

  239. and I'm kept for my salvation

  240. when I live confidently

  241. in light of this

  242. then I reflect

  243. Christ's glory

  244. how do I do that?

  245. both as I display

  246. how Christ himself

  247. has changed me

  248. from the inside out

  249. it's not normal

  250. to hope

  251. in somebody outside yourself

  252. but also

  253. as I happily walk

  254. the path of suffering

  255. which Jesus also walked

  256. those two things

  257. are a form of inexpressible joy

  258. I know

  259. in whatever situation

  260. the Lord makes me walk into

  261. and leads me into

  262. the truth

  263. of my salvation

  264. remains unshaken

  265. and as I walk

  266. into the path of suffering

  267. to my ultimate glory

  268. in heaven

  269. then I'm simply following

  270. the path that Jesus

  271. has walked before me

  272. and as his disciple

  273. has asked me to follow

  274. there's the source

  275. of inexpressible joy

  276. things might be falling apart

  277. all around us

  278. there might be

  279. incredible

  280. physical taxation

  281. but that pathway

  282. cannot be broken

  283. we will not slip off

  284. the pathway

  285. we will not be barged

  286. off the pathway

  287. we will be led home

  288. to that inexpressible

  289. joy and beauty

  290. of being with Jesus forever

  291. so suffering therefore

  292. moves from something

  293. that we need to fear

  294. as the text tells us

  295. to something

  296. which is an opportunity

  297. for us

  298. imagine that

  299. that's a big call

  300. to say that suffering

  301. is an opportunity

  302. for God's people

  303. what's it the opportunity

  304. for?

  305. it's an opportunity

  306. to trust Jesus more

  307. to grow more like him

  308. to be more joyful

  309. to be more thankful

  310. to the Lord

  311. for his goodness

  312. to us and Jesus

  313. now this is a really

  314. really important one

  315. to think through

  316. especially where we are

  317. at the minute

  318. as a church

  319. and where we are

  320. as a society

  321. where we are globally

  322. see most people

  323. including many

  324. many Christians

  325. think that suffering

  326. in and of itself

  327. is bad

  328. and that it should

  329. be avoided

  330. they would say

  331. things like

  332. suffering

  333. and happiness

  334. or joy

  335. are incompatible

  336. and that God

  337. wants us to be happy

  338. therefore we should

  339. minimize

  340. or do everything

  341. we can to avoid

  342. any sort of suffering

  343. others have a more

  344. stoic

  345. a stiff upper lip

  346. mentality towards

  347. suffering

  348. they think suffering

  349. is just an opportunity

  350. for the likes of me

  351. to prove my mettle

  352. to prove my character

  353. to show people

  354. what I'm made of

  355. and so

  356. the idea there

  357. is that you just

  358. tough it out

  359. you have a stiff upper lip

  360. and you just put your head

  361. down and shoulder it

  362. and you just say

  363. well okay

  364. people will see

  365. what I'm made of

  366. I'll come out

  367. on the side of this

  368. you know

  369. that thing I said

  370. about Australians

  371. we will get through this

  372. we will come out

  373. the other side

  374. we'll be better for it

  375. well that's a form

  376. of approach

  377. to suffering

  378. but it's not a gospel

  379. shaped approach

  380. to suffering

  381. the hope there

  382. is in strength

  383. of my own character

  384. to deal with

  385. whatever life

  386. throws at me

  387. it might be

  388. a real hope

  389. but it's not

  390. a gospel hope

  391. Peter speaks

  392. of the reality

  393. of suffering

  394. in a very positive way

  395. which trusts

  396. increasingly

  397. in who we are

  398. and what we can do

  399. in Jesus

  400. and not

  401. who we are

  402. and what we can do

  403. in ourselves

  404. rejoice

  405. with joy

  406. inexpressible

  407. filled with glory

  408. means moving

  409. into

  410. and through

  411. our suffering

  412. knowing that

  413. Jesus is ahead of us

  414. shaping us through

  415. and leading us home

  416. so my friends

  417. this inheritance

  418. this new and living hope

  419. is not just a theory

  420. to live by

  421. I would say to you

  422. it's a truth

  423. to die by

  424. if that becomes necessary

  425. over the last few years

  426. I myself have been

  427. trying to

  428. learn to crave

  429. this

  430. inexpressible joy

  431. suffering

  432. by trying

  433. to find

  434. a gospel place

  435. in suffering

  436. that is

  437. by a gospel place

  438. I mean

  439. recognizing

  440. in whatever

  441. suffering

  442. I'm experiencing

  443. at that moment

  444. that I can say

  445. to myself

  446. this is where

  447. Jesus wants me

  448. to be

  449. this is the best

  450. place for me

  451. to develop

  452. my trust

  453. in Jesus

  454. to be exposed

  455. to my own

  456. sinful life trust

  457. and therefore

  458. this is the place

  459. where I can be

  460. even in the midst

  461. of suffering

  462. free

  463. to learn

  464. the lessons

  465. he wants me

  466. to learn

  467. and free

  468. still to have

  469. a mind

  470. to others

  471. before myself

  472. so here's

  473. the big question

  474. that I wrap up

  475. this morning

  476. the big question

  477. is

  478. do we

  479. do you

  480. have a living

  481. hope

  482. in the face

  483. of COVID-19

  484. because

  485. if your

  486. living hope

  487. doesn't

  488. help you

  489. address

  490. COVID-19

  491. with confidence

  492. I'm not talking

  493. about being

  494. foolhardy

  495. I'm talking

  496. about being

  497. confident

  498. then you

  499. don't have

  500. the living

  501. hope

  502. that is

  503. rightfully

  504. yours

  505. to be

  506. understood

  507. and lived

  508. out

  509. as a

  510. Christian

  511. and the

  512. answer

  513. to your

  514. question

  515. as you

  516. answer me

  517. do you

  518. have a

  519. hope

  520. a living

  521. hope

  522. for COVID-19

  523. the answer

  524. whether it's

  525. yes or

  526. no

  527. will be

  528. very clear

  529. and obvious

  530. as you

  531. daily

  532. express

  533. your

  534. hope's

  535. mindset

  536. so here's

  537. how it

  538. works

  539. if all

  540. we have

  541. is this

  542. world

  543. and the

  544. things of

  545. this world

  546. health

  547. wealth

  548. comfort

  549. then

  550. there's no

  551. alternative

  552. you will

  553. become

  554. increasingly

  555. fearful

  556. you'll

  557. become

  558. increasingly

  559. self

  560. interested

  561. and

  562. self

  563. protective

  564. you'll

  565. become

  566. increasingly

  567. angry

  568. frustrated

  569. that the

  570. good

  571. things

  572. of this

  573. life

  574. that you

  575. worked

  576. so hard

  577. for

  578. are now

  579. being

  580. stripped

  581. away by

  582. some

  583. microscopic

  584. virus

  585. that's

  586. random

  587. but if

  588. on the

  589. other

  590. hand

  591. our

  592. real

  593. hope

  594. our

  595. real

  596. security

  597. our

  598. real

  599. home

  600. is in

  601. heaven

  602. and if

  603. our joy

  604. is to

  605. be like

  606. Jesus

  607. and follow

  608. his pathway

  609. of suffering

  610. to heaven

  611. then we

  612. like him

  613. will be

  614. free to

  615. be selfless

  616. in times

  617. of danger

  618. and will

  619. actually grow

  620. in this

  621. time of

  622. uncertainty

  623. and fear

  624. will

  625. actually

  626. mature

  627. in this

  628. tough

  629. time

  630. whether it

  631. be three

  632. weeks

  633. three months

  634. or indeed

  635. three years

  636. and you

  637. know what

  638. throughout

  639. history

  640. that's what

  641. Christians have

  642. been known

  643. for

  644. they've had

  645. such a

  646. hope

  647. a living

  648. hope in

  649. Christ

  650. that they've

  651. been the

  652. ones who've

  653. run into

  654. danger

  655. to care

  656. for other

  657. people

  658. even to the

  659. point of

  660. sacrificing

  661. their own

  662. lives

  663. and countless

  664. thousands

  665. have done

  666. that

  667. wouldn't it

  668. be great

  669. no matter

  670. what happens

  671. here in

  672. Newcastle

  673. if we

  674. as believers

  675. of this

  676. church

  677. became known

  678. as people

  679. who were

  680. running into

  681. danger

  682. keen to

  683. help others

  684. not foolhardy

  685. not ignoring

  686. those basic

  687. things of

  688. hygiene that we

  689. can do to

  690. protect ourselves

  691. but nevertheless

  692. not being

  693. driven by

  694. fear

  695. not being

  696. driven by

  697. self-protection

  698. not being

  699. driven by

  700. self-interest

  701. but moving

  702. towards people

  703. and showing

  704. people

  705. in practical

  706. ways that we

  707. have a hope

  708. that's far

  709. beyond health

  710. and wealth

  711. and prosperity

  712. in this life

  713. but there's

  714. another line

  715. and I'll

  716. finish on

  717. this then

  718. we can also

  719. perhaps begin

  720. to think

  721. this morning

  722. that this

  723. pandemic

  724. is already

  725. starting to

  726. expose the

  727. roots

  728. we find

  729. so easy

  730. to put down

  731. into this

  732. world

  733. when there's

  734. nothing to

  735. challenge us

  736. when there's

  737. nothing to

  738. expose our

  739. true securities

  740. and that

  741. happens

  742. it happens

  743. to us all

  744. every day

  745. those roots

  746. go deeper

  747. and deeper

  748. and deeper

  749. and sometimes

  750. we're not even

  751. aware of them

  752. until they're

  753. exposed and

  754. challenged

  755. you see

  756. that's what

  757. Satan's job

  758. is

  759. he'll trick

  760. us into

  761. believing

  762. that we

  763. have here

  764. in this

  765. that what

  766. we have

  767. here in

  768. this world

  769. is better

  770. than having

  771. God

  772. and so the

  773. roots go

  774. down

  775. and he'll

  776. show us

  777. all the

  778. shiny things

  779. the world

  780. offers

  781. for security

  782. and as we

  783. salivate over

  784. them

  785. the roots

  786. get deeper

  787. we choose

  788. the bigger

  789. house

  790. the luxury

  791. holiday

  792. the career

  793. getting married

  794. having children

  795. pursuing my

  796. dream and

  797. whatever form

  798. that comes

  799. in and it

  800. comes in

  801. myriad forms

  802. and the roots

  803. get deeper

  804. and deeper

  805. my friends

  806. as we

  807. start this

  808. stage of

  809. our church

  810. life

  811. online

  812. can I

  813. encourage you

  814. can I

  815. encourage you

  816. to encourage

  817. one another

  818. not to put

  819. down roots

  820. not to

  821. accept

  822. substitute

  823. hope in

  824. this world

  825. because if

  826. you invest

  827. your hope

  828. in this world

  829. you'll be

  830. mightily

  831. disappointed

  832. let's help

  833. one another

  834. expose these

  835. roots where

  836. they exist

  837. this past

  838. week

  839. Alice and

  840. I have

  841. just been

  842. talking about

  843. the impact

  844. of the

  845. stock market

  846. collapse

  847. on our

  848. superannuation

  849. now as we

  850. come towards

  851. the age of

  852. retirement

  853. I don't like

  854. the word

  855. and I'm

  856. going to

  857. redeploy

  858. but nevertheless

  859. you understand

  860. what I'm

  861. saying

  862. and it's

  863. really been a

  864. challenge to

  865. us to say

  866. well where

  867. is our

  868. security

  869. what impact

  870. is it going

  871. to have

  872. to read

  873. those figures

  874. and say

  875. upwards of

  876. 40% of

  877. our

  878. superannuation

  879. that we

  880. were looking

  881. forward to

  882. enjoying

  883. last week

  884. 40% of

  885. it's now

  886. gone

  887. and perhaps

  888. more to

  889. go

  890. with no

  891. perspective

  892. of it

  893. coming back

  894. in less

  895. than 8,

  896. 10,

  897. 12 years

  898. these sort

  899. of thoughts

  900. expose our

  901. securities

  902. don't they

  903. expose the

  904. roots that

  905. we need to

  906. dig up

  907. and we need

  908. to cut

  909. off

  910. so our

  911. connection

  912. to Jesus

  913. might be

  914. the true

  915. root

  916. the true

  917. sense of

  918. abiding

  919. that takes

  920. us forward

  921. well this

  922. has been a

  923. big thing

  924. for me

  925. I'm only

  926. starting to

  927. relax a

  928. little bit

  929. now if

  930. it's been a

  931. bit wooden

  932. and artificial

  933. I will try

  934. and improve

  935. over the

  936. weeks

  937. thank you

  938. very much

  939. for listening

  940. and may

  941. God go

  942. with you

  943. this week
