  1. Jesus, chapter 17, Jesus prays before he's arrested and crucified.

  2. And the first five verses, he prays for himself.

  3. And these verses we're going to read from 16 to 19.

  4. He prays for his disciples.

  5. I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world.

  6. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word.

  7. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you.

  8. For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come

  9. to know in truth that I came from you.

  10. And they have believed that you sent me.

  11. I am praying for them.

  12. I am not praying for the world, but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.

  13. All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them.

  14. And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world.

  15. And I am coming to you.

  16. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.

  17. While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me.

  18. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction that the scripture might be fulfilled.

  19. But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

  20. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

  21. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.

  22. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

  23. Sanctify them in your truth.

  24. Your word is truth.

  25. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.

  26. And for their sake, I consecrate myself, that they may also be sanctified in truth.

  27. Thanks, team.

  28. It seems fitting to sing a song about prayer, or that is a prayer, as we're about to study a prayer that Jesus prayed over his disciples.

  29. So if you are new to the church today, then we're actually preaching through the last section of John, but we're in John chapter 17 at the moment.

    John 17 chapter mention

  30. Jesus, what they call high priestly prayer, where he prays for himself, his disciples, and the disciples to come, the believers to come.

  31. And today we're looking at the second part.

  32. That's verses 6 to 19.

  33. So if you have a Bible, open it up to John chapter 17.

    John 17 chapter mention

  34. If you don't have a Bible, but you have a Bible app, then grab that and open that.

  35. I'll be putting up the Bible verses on the screen.

  36. Well, I won't be, but we will be.

  37. We'll have them up on the screen.

  38. And they are from the ESV, English Standard Version, just in case it doesn't match exactly with the one that you have.

  39. Alrighty.

  40. As that passage was read out, I'm not sure if you noticed, but there was a word that turned up quite a few times.

  41. And that word was world.

  42. Have you guys heard of word clouds?

  43. Because what I did was I took this passage and I stuck it in a word cloud up.

  44. And so if we go on to the next thing, there you go.

  45. This shows you how the larger the word, the more frequently the word appears.

  46. And so if you look at that, it's pretty obvious which word comes out most, isn't it?

  47. The word world.

  48. Jesus is praying for his disciples in relation to this world.

  49. He identifies in this, as we go through it, you'll see, he identifies in this prayer two realms that people can belong to.

  50. We can belong to the world, the world of people that we live amongst, or we can belong to God.

  51. A lot of the language is actually related to this perspective.

  52. So you'll see things like those the Father has given Jesus, those Jesus has kept and guarded.

  53. Those who are mine, Jesus says, those who know, those who believe.

  54. These are the ones that Jesus is praying for here.

  55. And there's a particular word group that actually holds these concepts together in terms of those who are mine in relation to the world.

  56. And that word group is the sanctification word group.

  57. The sanctify word group.

  58. It's a very small word.

  59. So we go back onto that, the word cloud, sorry.

  60. It's a very small word right down in the bottom corner.

  61. Now if you're in years three to six, you're in here before you go out to your children's program, you'll actually have one of these.

  62. If you're in year three to six and you don't have one, then there's probably one spare on the back up there.

  63. And some special people got an extra one too.

  64. But the idea of that is, for you guys in year three to six while you're here, what I want you to do is find that word sanctify and then see if you can find every word that relates to it.

  65. And that's every word that gives you the sense that something is taken out of or treated in a special way as distinct from the world around us.

  66. Okay, have you got that?

  67. If you haven't, your parents can explain it to you as you sat next to them.

  68. See if you can find all those words that actually relate to sanctify.

  69. And I'll give you a little hint.

  70. Consecrate and sanctify are the same word in Greek.

  71. Okay, they're the same word.

  72. Now, the fact that you've got the word even in ESV, which is fairly literal translation,

  73. the fact that you've got the word translated two different ways in the one passage,

  74. is it tells you that this word, this sanctify word group, is kind of a big word group.

  75. It's big.

  76. It's a big concept in the context of the whole Bible.

  77. I mean, we translate this word, different words to mean specific things.

  78. So, for example, runs.

  79. You know, the Cricket World Cup's on.

  80. So, runs on the board is what matters.

  81. Someone who runs as a form of exercise, they're crazy, but it's actually something,

  82. you know what I mean when I say that they, you know, when someone runs for exercise.

  83. And someone who has the runs, you know that that's very different.

  84. Although it may involve running.

  85. It actually, different points.

  86. It is actually very different.

  87. Well, this sanctify word group is not like that in the sense that it's one word that means a bunch of different things.

  88. It's one word at different times.

  89. This is one word that means a whole bunch of things all at the same time.

  90. And so, I guess I could say in this, you know, recognizing there are so many people pregnant in our church at the moment,

  91. that this word is pregnant with meaning.

  92. So, what is that meaning, you ask?

  93. And I'm glad you do because I'm going to answer that.

  94. But sanctify means to set apart, to prepare for holy service, to purify, to be like God, to be for God, to belong to God.

  95. That means all of those things roll into one.

  96. Holiness is another translation of this word.

  97. It has, so it has in it the sense of who I am and how I live and who I live for all rolled into one.

  98. It speaks to my identity, my purpose, and my destiny all at the same time.

  99. And this word is what shapes Jesus' prayer.

  100. God's mission has always been to gather a people for himself.

  101. His treasured possession.

  102. And this word describes what Jesus is doing.

  103. It's exactly what he's doing.

  104. He's calling people out of the world and he's setting them apart from the world.

  105. Purifying them or making them holy.

  106. Preparing them for holy service.

  107. And I'm not sure if you find this.

  108. But as a Christian, I think it can be really hard for us to work out how we actually be this set apart people while still being in the world.

  109. Do you find that?

  110. I know that, for example, it's a couple of years ago now, isn't it, when the plebiscite for same-sex marriage came through.

  111. I know that when that was coming through and there were conversations around how we should vote,

  112. that there were a number of people in this congregation who were unsure about how they should vote.

  113. Or even adamant that it wasn't right to vote or express a religious opinion in the political sphere.

  114. There are so many different ways that we struggle to actually know what it means to be a Christian and to own our Christian faith.

  115. And at the same time, live in and engage with the world around us.

  116. It seems like a minefield.

  117. And if you didn't have that issue with that particular vote, just think about how many times you're involved in a conversation over the coffee table at work or whatever.

  118. And it drifts into an area where you start to think, oh man, I really know that I should witness at this point.

  119. But this issue is just so complicated.

  120. I don't even know how to bring my faith to bear on this.

  121. Or I'm actually too afraid to say what my faith actually speaks to at this point.

  122. It's just too hard.

  123. It's too scary.

  124. I know that it'll cost me if I do.

  125. Those points of tension, points of tension that were arising for the disciples, they were about to be left in the world.

  126. And Jesus did not want them to think that they were for one moment alone in it.

  127. So, Jesus prays for those who's called out of the world.

  128. These disciples that he prays for are representative of all of us who are being called out.

  129. They're the starting point, but we're the continuation of God's work.

  130. And in a word, Jesus' prayer is that the Father would sanctify.

  131. Would sanctify them.

  132. So, let's break this prayer down now and actually look at it in terms of how it unfolds.

  133. Because what Jesus does is he does three things.

  134. He says, I am praying for and identifies the specific people he's praying for.

  135. And then he says, I'm praying because, which is the reason why he's praying this prayer.

  136. And then finally, he gets around to saying what he's asking for, what he's asking the Father for on behalf of.

  137. So, that's I am praying that.

  138. So, if you look on the back of your bulletins, that's the basic outline that I'll be following.

  139. And right from the beginning of this section, we see the sanctifying work of Jesus.

  140. Jesus is specific about who he's praying for.

  141. And he speaks about them from two perspectives.

  142. And these two perspectives, I think, are really hard for us to hold in our heads at the same time.

  143. You see, he speaks from the perspective of, firstly, the people you gave me out of the world.

  144. And then he goes on to say, the people who kept your word.

  145. Notice the difference in perspective there.

  146. Let's start with the people who you gave me out of the world.

  147. And that's straight up in verse 6.

  148. We read these words.

  149. This is a significant thing that Jesus is talking about here.

  150. You see, the Israelites got the personal name of God through Moses.

  151. And if you remember, that's the burning bush story, if you have any familiarity with the Bible.

  152. That's where God actually gave Moses his personal name.

  153. They got a glimpse of God through Moses.

  154. And we talked about that last week.

  155. When Moses was actually, even got a glimpse of God's glory, his skin glowed for days afterwards and he had to wear a veil.

  156. They got a glimpse of God.

  157. But they couldn't see God and live.

  158. The Jews understood the vast distance between them and God.

  159. And they knew it was so great that they wouldn't even speak his name out loud.

  160. We believe that the best pronunciation of God's personal name is Yahweh.

  161. Some people say Jehovah.

  162. But the reason we don't know for certain is because they never said it out loud, the Jews.

  163. So it's one of those things that we just don't know.

  164. And this was out of reverence for God, his recognition of this vast distance.

  165. But the people that Jesus is praying for have been taken to a whole new level in terms of relationship.

  166. In Jesus, they have seen God.

  167. They know him.

  168. They've seen him face to face, finally.

  169. And John introduces this biography of Jesus with the words, if you go back to John chapter 1 verses 1 to 4, he says these words.

    John 1:1–4

  170. In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God.

  171. He was in the beginning with God.

  172. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.

  173. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

  174. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

  175. People sometimes say that all religions are the same.

  176. But the God of the Bible didn't leave us in any doubt about who he is.

  177. He didn't leave it to us to try and find him or to discover him as if we could.

  178. This God has made himself known to his people in Jesus.

  179. The people Jesus is praying for are those who recognize that Jesus, as God, has come to his people.

  180. So we get this perspective from Godward, looking at the people that God has set apart from even before the foundations of the world.

  181. And then we get this second perspective, which is the people who kept your word, we read in the following verses.

  182. John also describes his people as those who have kept your word.

  183. And they have.

  184. Now, I'm not saying the disciples were perfect.

  185. They may be not in the fullest sense.

  186. They certainly weren't perfect.

  187. If you look at, just take Peter as an example, he kind of stands out as one of those disciples who kept putting his foot in it.

  188. And they certainly didn't understand the place of Jesus' death on the cross.

  189. We know from the past several sermons that they're really struggling with that.

  190. But they accepted that Jesus was from God in verse 7.

  191. They received Jesus' words as from God in the first part of verse 8.

  192. And they have believed that Jesus was sent from God in the second part of verse 8.

  193. These disciples didn't have the full gospel at this point.

  194. But they had come to the appropriate gospel response.

  195. They were all in.

  196. That's what belief is.

  197. All in.

  198. I'll give you an illustration of this that might be helpful.

  199. When two people marry, they make promises to each other.

  200. They're absolute promises.

  201. I promise to be, to do, to stay.

  202. No exceptions.

  203. Have you noticed that when you listen to those promises?

  204. Perhaps, certainly for me before I was married, I would read those promises or I'd hear them at weddings that I went to and think,

  205. My goodness.

  206. Will I ever get to the point where I can say those things?

  207. Where I can be all in with someone else?

  208. Don't get me wrong.

  209. You don't keep those promises perfectly.

  210. But who in their right minds would marry someone who would only commit half-heartedly?

  211. I promise to, most of the time.

  212. I promise to, dot, dot, dot, dot, when I feel like it.

  213. I promise to, well, I'll look after you in sickness, but man flu is not a real thing, so buck up and get out of bed and get on with life.

  214. You know, we just don't have that, do we?

  215. We promise wholeheartedly all in.

  216. We fail at points.

  217. But we own that.

  218. And we repent of it.

  219. And we move on all in.

  220. To resist this is to hold something back of yourself.

  221. You know, to say, I'll stay committed while it suits me, but I'm reserving the right to decline.

  222. But if you ask me for a part of my life that I don't want to share, then I'm sorry.

  223. Here we find the way that Jesus describes his disciples is that they had turned their backs on the world.

  224. They chose Jesus.

  225. It's why they were so devastated when he died.

  226. They were all in.

  227. The way that we too should be.

  228. When we say that we're believers, we should be all in.

  229. So these two perspectives that Jesus describes these people from,

  230. he says, and he says in verse 9, just to clarify that he's doing this,

  231. he says in verse 9,

  232. I'm praying for them.

  233. I'm not praying for the world, but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.

  234. These are the people that Jesus is praying for.

  235. Not for the world.

  236. Just for the ones that the Father has given him out of the world.

  237. And I've got to acknowledge at this point that Jesus places two truths together that seem contradictory.

  238. Because he says this, the ones that you've given me, on the one hand,

  239. and then he says on the other hand, the ones who have believed.

  240. And there's no embarrassment or apology about this.

  241. It's absolutely clear that in terms of the way Jesus prays,

  242. that there's one that's actually superintending over the other as well.

  243. That God's choosing comes so much to the forefront in comparison to our believing.

  244. No embarrassment or apology, that's just how it is.

  245. And if we're really honest, there's times when we really don't like this.

  246. It kind of impinges on our sense of personal sovereignty, doesn't it?

  247. The reason that it does that is because we see life from our own perspective.

  248. We live life moment by moment in real time,

  249. making decisions on the basis of conscious and unfortunately too much subconscious thought.

  250. We see life from our own perspective,

  251. but Jesus is giving us a glimpse from God's perspective.

  252. From our perspective, we hear the gospel and we respond.

  253. We can choose to believe on the one hand or not on the other.

  254. God's perspective reveals that we who believe were already chosen,

  255. were already set apart.

  256. You following me here?

  257. Let me give you an illustration that might help a little bit.

  258. It doesn't actually explain it.

  259. I think this is too big a concept.

  260. I would say that to actually understand how God is sovereign over this

  261. is above my pay grade in terms of ability to understand.

  262. But here's an illustration that kind of puts those two things together.

  263. When I hear the gospel, it's like I come to a door

  264. and a sign on the door says this,

  265. all who believe in me enter here.

  266. I choose to believe.

  267. And so I walk open and walk through that door.

  268. But once I've gone through that door and I look back at that door,

  269. the sign on the door says on the other side of the door,

  270. all whom I have chosen, I will bring through here.

  271. Friends, I think this is a truth,

  272. like a combination of truths

  273. that we perhaps don't understand in any sense

  274. until we've walked through the door.

  275. And we perhaps won't understand even in its fullest sense

  276. until we meet our God face to face.

  277. We don't know how it works.

  278. It's above our pay grade,

  279. but ultimately we get to rest in the truth of it.

  280. Because if you have walked through the door,

  281. then you are someone whom the Father chose before time

  282. and who the Son died to rescue

  283. and who God delights to call his precious child.

  284. Look at how many times God owns us in this passage.

  285. Mine, yours, ours.

  286. The ones you set apart I've come to claim.

  287. The ones I am glorified in.

  288. The ones I would love to have my joy.

  289. This is who Jesus is praying for.

  290. The disciples Jesus called out of the world

  291. and through them all who would follow.

  292. So I am praying for, Jesus says.

  293. These people, these set-apart people

  294. who believe, who are all in in their belief in you.

  295. In me.

  296. And then he goes on to say,

  297. I am praying because.

  298. Why does he need to pray?

  299. What's going on here?

  300. Well, Jesus prays for his own

  301. because he has reached this transition point

  302. in his ministry.

  303. The transition point where he is actually leaving them.

  304. And we see this in verse 10 to 11a.

  305. All mine are yours and yours are mine.

  306. And I am glorified in them.

  307. And I am no longer in the world,

  308. but they are in the world.

  309. And I am coming to you.

  310. Now, as we talked about last week,

  311. Jesus is glorified at the cross.

  312. But it means that he has to leave them.

  313. His death is a part of that.

  314. But that's only a temporary separation.

  315. We know that, you know, spoiler alert,

  316. he died and he rose again.

  317. And he spent some time with them after that.

  318. Jesus is actually talking here

  319. about his longer term return to heaven,

  320. where he still is interceding on our behalf.

  321. This departure is a big deal for them.

  322. The disciples have not been able

  323. to understand this yet.

  324. And again, you'll have seen

  325. from the past several chapters that we've read,

  326. as Jesus is talking with them,

  327. it's like they're,

  328. yeah, like Jesus is talking to a brick wall.

  329. It's just not sinking in.

  330. They don't understand.

  331. John's recorded them,

  332. Jesus telling them a number of times.

  333. Even the crowds challenged Jesus

  334. on this point.

  335. In John chapter 12, verse 34,

    John 12:34

  336. that triumphal entry,

  337. Jesus talks about being lifted up,

  338. to talk about the way that he's going to die,

  339. we read in John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  340. And in 12 verse 34,

  341. the crowd actually responds to him,

  342. thinking, you're talking about dying.

  343. They say,

  344. we have heard from the law

  345. that the Christ remains forever.

  346. How can you say

  347. that the Son of Man must be lifted up?

  348. They couldn't understand Jesus' plan

  349. because it was outside of their expectations,

  350. their understanding

  351. of who the Messiah would be,

  352. what glory looked like,

  353. as we looked at last week.

  354. If he goes away,

  355. then their hopes would be shattered.

  356. And Jesus knows this.

  357. He knows that their hopes will be shattered.

  358. But he also knows beyond that,

  359. that those hopes will be rebuilt correctly

  360. by their Father through the Holy Spirit.

  361. So he prays for them.

  362. He knows he's going away.

  363. There's another aspect to Jesus' concern as he leaves.

  364. You see, Jesus also knows

  365. what he has done for them

  366. while he has been with them.

  367. He has kept them.

  368. He has guarded them.

  369. Now these words, again,

  370. you can see them on surface value,

  371. and you think, okay, that's great.

  372. But actually these words in Jewish usage,

  373. so in the Septuagint,

  374. which is the Greek translation of the Old Testament,

  375. these words were used

  376. very specifically for

  377. describing covenant faithfulness.

  378. So faithfulness of the people

  379. in keeping the commandments,

  380. that keeping word.

  381. Or faithfulness of God

  382. was described as him guarding his people.

  383. So what we're seeing here is

  384. when Jesus uses these words,

  385. he's saying,

  386. I am Yahweh,

  387. faithfully protecting my people,

  388. helping them to keep the covenant.

  389. Even the one who was lost,

  390. we read in these verses,

  391. was only lost

  392. because the scripture said he would be.

  393. Jesus prays

  394. because now he is leaving.

  395. And he wants his disciples to know

  396. that they will be taken care of

  397. after he has gone.

  398. And the final,

  399. oh, there's a couple more reasons, sorry.

  400. Yeah, the next thing that Jesus says,

  401. actually,

  402. the reason he prays

  403. is because he actually,

  404. for him,

  405. his perspective is

  406. that he is returning to the Father,

  407. and that's an incredible sense of joy for him.

  408. To be one with the Father again

  409. is a huge thing for Jesus.

  410. He is so looking forward to it.

  411. And so Jesus prays

  412. that they might actually experience

  413. the same thing.

  414. In verse 13,

  415. he says,

  416. Now I am coming to you

  417. and these things I speak in the world

  418. that they may have my joy fulfilled

  419. in themselves.

  420. His prayer is that they will be kept in him.

  421. As painful as the separation will be,

  422. the joy of knowing what it is

  423. to abide in Jesus

  424. is far greater.

  425. And they will need the Father

  426. to intervene in their lives

  427. so that they can endure.

  428. He wants them to have the joy

  429. of knowing what it means

  430. to abide in the Father.

  431. To abide in him.

  432. And finally,

  433. Jesus prays

  434. because he knows

  435. the life they will live.

  436. The disciples of Jesus

  437. are set apart from the world

  438. like he is

  439. and we saw what they did to Jesus.

  440. In verse 14,

  441. Jesus says,

  442. I have given them your word

  443. and the world has hated them

  444. because they are not of the world

  445. just as I am not of the world.

  446. The very truth

  447. that brings joy to us

  448. brings opposition from the world.

  449. It's not too harsh to say

  450. that the world

  451. will hate us.

  452. The more I abide in Jesus,

  453. the less I will fit into this world

  454. because of him.

  455. The more

  456. I sit under

  457. and bring myself under God's word,

  458. the less

  459. I will be liked

  460. because of him.

  461. Some knowledge of God

  462. is tolerated.

  463. We know that.

  464. And I would suggest

  465. that so much of the Bible,

  466. I think this is one of the ways

  467. Tim Keller

  468. looks at the Bible.

  469. He talks about

  470. Doctrine A

  471. and Doctrine B.

  472. In every passage

  473. in the Bible

  474. there is something good

  475. that appeals to everybody.

  476. But there's a flip side

  477. to it

  478. that challenges

  479. and really grates

  480. against the way

  481. we choose to live

  482. in our society,

  483. in our world.

  484. Some knowledge of God

  485. is tolerated.

  486. But it's God

  487. on their terms

  488. and from the world's perspective.

  489. It's not the whole God,

  490. is it?

  491. The God that we know.

  492. So these are the reasons

  493. why Jesus prays.

  494. And this,

  495. and let's go on

  496. and have a look

  497. at what Jesus actually prays.

  498. See,

  499. Jesus prays

  500. that God will keep them

  501. within this hostile world.

  502. In verse 15,

  503. I do not ask

  504. that you take them

  505. out of the world,

  506. but that you keep them

  507. from the evil one.

  508. They are not of the world

  509. just as I'm not of the world.

  510. Sanctify them in the truth.

  511. Your word is truth.

  512. As you sent me

  513. into the world,

  514. so I have sent them

  515. into the world.

  516. And for their sake

  517. I consecrate myself

  518. that they also

  519. may be sanctified in truth.

  520. We live in a world

  521. that is hostile

  522. to who we are.

  523. It hates us

  524. because of who we are

  525. in Christ.

  526. And this hatred

  527. comes at us

  528. in two forms.

  529. The point of tension

  530. is the truth

  531. and the enemy

  532. is the father of lies.

  533. Now it's possible

  534. that we'll be attacked physically

  535. and if you read

  536. the news reports,

  537. certainly in Nigeria,

  538. the places like that,

  539. you'll hear of Christians

  540. being attacked and killed.

  541. India as well.

  542. Christians being attacked

  543. and killed

  544. because they are Christian.

  545. It's tragic to hear

  546. of Christians

  547. dying for their faith.

  548. But notice here

  549. that that's not

  550. Jesus' main concern.

  551. Most of the disciples

  552. Jesus is praying for here

  553. will die for their faith.

  554. But Jesus' main concern

  555. is that they would not

  556. step away

  557. from the truth

  558. that makes them

  559. distinct in the world.

  560. And so this is where

  561. the world attacks us.

  562. It seeks to undermine,

  563. to ridicule,

  564. to shame us

  565. in our thinking

  566. about God's word.

  567. And Satan,

  568. elsewhere described

  569. as the father of lies,

  570. Satan will spin

  571. lie after lie

  572. into a web of deceit

  573. that we can't see

  574. our way clear of.

  575. He'll try to turn us

  576. around so many times

  577. that we'll think

  578. we're going

  579. in the right direction.

  580. He's capable

  581. of convincing us

  582. that we are following

  583. the truth

  584. even when we're not.

  585. Think of how women

  586. have been oppressed

  587. and are being oppressed

  588. by people

  589. who call themselves

  590. Christians.

  591. Husbands who abuse

  592. their wives

  593. in the name of the Lord.

  594. think of how many

  595. Christians justified

  596. slavery,

  597. the stolen generation.

  598. I'm not saying

  599. every Christian did.

  600. There were many Christians.

  601. In fact,

  602. the movement

  603. against slavery

  604. was led by Christians.

  605. Many Christians

  606. actually ministered

  607. to the indigenous Australians

  608. at the same time

  609. that other Christians

  610. were advocating

  611. for this stolen generation

  612. policy.

  613. think of how many

  614. churches supported

  615. the Nazis

  616. in World War II.

  617. I believe it was

  618. all the major

  619. denominations

  620. in Germany

  621. at the time.

  622. Think of the Christians

  623. who actively campaign

  624. against God's teaching.

  625. I'm not sure

  626. if you're aware.

  627. I'm going to bring

  628. one up

  629. that's certainly

  630. coming onto the news

  631. recently.

  632. And this is a current

  633. debate over conversion

  634. therapy.

  635. Victorian government

  636. and the Queensland

  637. government

  638. are actually bringing

  639. in some legislation

  640. to do with

  641. banning conversion

  642. therapy.

  643. And I've got to say

  644. up front

  645. that what I've read

  646. of conversion therapy

  647. is appalling.

  648. It should be banned.

  649. But activists

  650. wish to go further.

  651. One has said

  652. people who have

  653. an issue

  654. with this legislation

  655. when they asked

  656. about,

  657. well,

  658. is it going to

  659. impinge

  660. on religious freedom?

  661. He says

  662. people who have

  663. an issue

  664. with this legislation

  665. are the people

  666. who come from

  667. a place

  668. that says

  669. being LGBTIQ

  670. is somehow

  671. disordered.

  672. And that

  673. any approach

  674. that actually

  675. challenges someone

  676. for being,

  677. for expressing

  678. themselves in

  679. these ways

  680. should be banned

  681. whether in a

  682. formal clinical

  683. setting or not.

  684. therapy needs

  685. to be banned.

  686. Another has openly

  687. said the law

  688. needs to go

  689. further.

  690. He said the

  691. majority of

  692. therapy that

  693. is happening

  694. today is

  695. happening in

  696. the context

  697. of one-on-one

  698. conversations.

  699. This is taking

  700. it very much,

  701. I mean,

  702. the legislation

  703. is meant to be

  704. about the

  705. clinical setting,

  706. but this is

  707. where activists

  708. want to go.

  709. One-on-one

  710. conversations.

  711. And goes on

  712. to say,

  713. in all

  714. situations,

  715. all times,

  716. all settings,

  717. this type of

  718. therapy needs

  719. to be banned.

  720. Those two

  721. quotes were

  722. from two

  723. different people.

  724. The first

  725. one was

  726. from the

  727. Right

  728. Reverend

  729. Jeremy

  730. Greaves,

  731. an archbishop

  732. in Queensland.

  733. Sorry,

  734. a bishop in

  735. Queensland,

  736. not an archbishop,

  737. Anglican bishop.

  738. The second

  739. one was

  740. from Alex

  741. Pitaway,

  742. a pastor

  743. of a church

  744. in Brisbane.

  745. I haven't

  746. even gone

  747. outside of

  748. our own

  749. faith to

  750. show you

  751. how hard

  752. it is to

  753. stick to

  754. the truth

  755. in this

  756. world.

  757. It is so

  758. hard to

  759. own our

  760. own faith

  761. in the

  762. world.

  763. The world

  764. wants us

  765. to give

  766. up our

  767. set-apartness,

  768. our holiness.

  769. It grates

  770. on them when

  771. they see the

  772. difference.

  773. We are

  774. seen as

  775. bigoted,

  776. judgmental,

  777. harsh,

  778. unloving,

  779. oppressive.

  780. This world

  781. wants us

  782. to give

  783. up our

  784. set-apartness.

  785. So Jesus

  786. prays that

  787. the Father

  788. will do

  789. the opposite,

  790. that the

  791. Father will

  792. strengthen us

  793. in the

  794. truth,

  795. and that

  796. through this

  797. we would

  798. actually be

  799. the ones

  800. who invade

  801. the world

  802. with this

  803. truth instead

  804. of the

  805. world invading

  806. us with

  807. lies.

  808. That we

  809. would know

  810. the joy

  811. that Jesus

  812. has of

  813. being one

  814. with God

  815. and that it

  816. would be

  817. unquenchable

  818. and attractive

  819. and challenging

  820. and ultimately

  821. sanctifying for

  822. a world

  823. that lives

  824. apart from

  825. God.

  826. God

  827. friends,

  828. Jesus

  829. prayed for

  830. himself,

  831. glorify

  832. me

  833. and he

  834. was glorified

  835. at the

  836. cross.

  837. Jesus

  838. prays for

  839. his

  840. disciples,

  841. sanctify

  842. them

  843. and we

  844. are

  845. as we

  846. live by

  847. his truth,

  848. by his

  849. word

  850. in this

  851. world.

  852. If I

  853. were to

  854. distill the

  855. three parts

  856. of Jesus

  857. prayer down

  858. to one

  859. word or

  860. one phrase,

  861. it would

  862. be this.

  863. The first

  864. part,

  865. glorify

  866. me.

  867. This is

  868. from Jesus'

  869. perspective.

  870. Jesus is

  871. saying glorify

  872. me.

  873. Jesus is

  874. saying sanctify

  875. them and

  876. then the

  877. third part

  878. next week

  879. without wanting

  880. to be too

  881. much of a

  882. spoiler,

  883. the third

  884. part is

  885. unify

  886. us,

  887. Father,

  888. Son,

  889. Spirit and

  890. the church

  891. that Christ

  892. is building.

  893. Set us

  894. apart.

  895. Purify us

  896. through the

  897. cross.

  898. Prepare us

  899. for service.

  900. Glorify

  901. yourself in

  902. us is the

  903. prayer that

  904. Jesus wants

  905. on our

  906. lips.

  907. So let me

  908. pray those

  909. things now.

  910. And we're

  911. actually going

  912. to share

  913. the Lord's

  914. Supper,

  915. which will

  916. remind us

  917. of the

  918. glory of

  919. the cross

  920. and hopefully

  921. will help

  922. us in

  923. terms of

  924. our frame

  925. of reference

  926. in holding

  927. on to

  928. truth in

  929. this world.

  930. Let me

  931. pray those

  932. words.

  933. Let's

  934. pray together.

  935. Father God,

  936. I pray that

  937. you would

  938. set us

  939. apart,

  940. sanctify us,

  941. purify us

  942. through the

  943. cross,

  944. prepare us

  945. for works

  946. of service

  947. in your

  948. name,

  949. and glorify

  950. yourself in

  951. us as we

  952. live in the

  953. world faithfully

  954. and joyfully

  955. bearing your

  956. name.

  957. In Jesus'

  958. name we pray

  959. this.

  960. Amen.
