  1. All right, good morning.

  2. Okay, we're completing our mini-series on Jesus' high priestly prayer of John chapter 17.

    John 17 chapter mention

  3. So if you've got a Bible, whether it be an app or a real hard copy, please turn open to John chapter 17.

    John 17 chapter mention

  4. As I said, it's the finish of the series, so it's the last six verses, verses 20 to 26.

  5. Up to this point, as we've been going through the series, we've found that Jesus has been praying from the perspective of the big picture.

  6. He prays, glorify me at the very beginning.

  7. He asked God to glorify him, and as we discovered in that, what he was really praying for was that God would actually glorify him at the cross.

  8. That was where his glory would be most evident to us.

  9. The hour for which he had come was that hour.

  10. So he prays, glorify me.

  11. And then with his disciples present, he turns his prayer to them, and he prays for his disciples, sanctify them.

  12. He asks the Father to sanctify his disciples, to set them apart from the world, but within the world, and to actually go out into the world.

  13. And as they do that, he asks that the Father will keep them.

  14. The implication is that this is his will, and that this will have an impact.

  15. As these people go out into the world, something will happen as a result.

  16. And now Jesus gets personal, and I say personal for a couple of reasons, but one of them is that he's actually talking about me and you,

  17. and the other is that he's actually becoming much more personal in his language, in the way that he's engaging with who he's praying for.

  18. And he gets personal in a revolutionary way, because here he prays, not me, them, but us.

  19. Unify us.

  20. He asks the Father to unify us.

  21. And by us, I don't just mean us here present.

  22. I mean all of us, Father, Son, Holy Spirit, and us.

  23. Not just Christian with Christian, but Christian with Christian, with Father, with Son, with Holy Spirit.

  24. So as we consider this, it's an amazing thing, the degree of personality that Jesus goes to at this point.

  25. Let's just think about how that's actually panned out in our society this week.

  26. Bo's already talked about Tower of Babel, which was several thousand years ago.

  27. Just think about this week.

  28. How good are we at actually promoting unity within our society, within our families?

  29. Even our families, my goodness.

  30. Within our church.

  31. How good are we at doing that?

  32. I think it's quite an interesting thing that we actually, the more we desire unity, the more we seem to be able to define how different we are.

  33. And yet it's so difficult and so elusive it is for us to actually discover the reality of that unity, actually live in unity.

  34. Have you noticed that?

  35. There's this theory called intersectionalism, which is a really interesting theory.

  36. It's a kind of a, I guess you call it neo-Marxist theory, that actually really is helpful at getting a sense of where we're different,

  37. where divisions occur, and the power imbalance that actually creates those divisions and sustains them.

  38. But one of the really interesting things I've been finding as I've been reading it is that even as we get better at understanding

  39. our lack of unity, our lack of unity, we still struggle to move from that point to actually producing unity.

  40. We just don't seem to be able to do it.

  41. And it takes one virus for it to be every man for himself in the toilet paper aisle.

  42. Have you noticed that?

  43. One thing.

  44. And boom, we suddenly break down into our constituent parts, don't we?

  45. So easily and so readily.

  46. So perhaps we should get some sort of sense into how we actually find unity by just looking at what Jesus even does,

  47. which is to actually pray to the Father for unity.

  48. He doesn't turn into himself or turn to an interesting or new philosophy.

  49. He turns to a person and he asks for it.

  50. Let's follow the passage through and see how that unfolds.

  51. See, Jesus prays at the beginning.

  52. We get a sense of who he's praying for in verse 20.

  53. He actually says that he's praying for those who will believe.

  54. I'll read that verse out, verse 20.

  55. I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word.

  56. Jesus has just prayed for his disciples that he's sending out.

  57. Remember, I've just said that.

  58. And he absolutely expects there to be a response.

  59. And so he prays for those who he knows will believe in him.

  60. This belief will come through their word.

  61. Their word is their testimony about Jesus' life and teaching.

  62. But remember, they're not very quick to understand what Jesus is talking about.

  63. It's been coming all the way through this whole upper room, this meal, this last meal together.

  64. These guys, they don't seem to be like the sharpest tool in the shed at this point.

  65. On their own, they didn't understand.

  66. This testimony that they've passed down is based on the work of the Holy Spirit in their lives.

  67. And you can read about that in John 15, 26 to 27.

  68. It's something Jesus said at this meal table.

  69. Through the Spirit, they would remember what Jesus said.

  70. They would understand what Jesus did.

  71. And we are those who have heard and believed their testimony.

  72. Those whom the Father chose, sanctified by the Father through those who believed before us,

  73. as Gareth taught with the kids about.

  74. This message has been passed down and handed down.

  75. So as Jesus lifts his hands to heaven and prays, he prays for us.

  76. For you.

  77. He knew even then that it would be you sitting here today.

  78. Think about that.

  79. I mean, when we pray alone or as a family or as a small group, in our small groups,

  80. we're praying for the people around us that we love, aren't we?

  81. We know their needs.

  82. And we pray for them personally.

  83. In the words of this gospel that John's recorded,

  84. Jesus is praying personally for us.

  85. Imagine yourself huddled around in that group and hearing these words.

  86. So what does Jesus pray for?

  87. In a word?

  88. Unity.

  89. That we will be one like God.

  90. That's one aspect of it.

  91. And the second aspect of this unity is that we will be together.

  92. So let's have a look at that as it unfolds in the passage.

  93. That's roughly the passage splits into two halves like that.

  94. One like God and together.

  95. So in verse 21, we look at the oneness aspect.

  96. Jesus prays this.

  97. He prays that they might all be one,

  98. just as you, Father, are in me and I in you.

  99. That they also may be in us,

  100. so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

  101. Can you see some of the nuances of oneness

  102. that are actually coming out here?

  103. The first one is one like God.

  104. Jesus prays that we will be one.

  105. One like the Father and the Son are one.

  106. I've got to say at this point,

  107. we're diving into a mystery that's so profound it may be confusing.

  108. I mean, I get some of these things done already.

  109. Last week we've looked at election and predestination.

  110. This week I'm actually getting the chance

  111. to dive into the mystery that is the Trinity.

  112. One God, three persons.

  113. What the heck does that mean?

  114. Well, I've got to say that in a sense we don't fully get it

  115. and we'll need eternity to contemplate it.

  116. We get eternity to contemplate it, which is great.

  117. But Jesus is saying here

  118. that we'll also experience something of it here and now.

  119. We are becoming and will be one with each other

  120. like the Father and the Son are one.

  121. No less than that as our template.

  122. One like God.

  123. That's an amazing thing.

  124. Now, let me try and say something

  125. that's at least a start at grasping what Jesus is meaning here.

  126. You see, the Father and the Son, if I was to describe them,

  127. the Father and the Son are distinguishable and inseparable.

  128. Distinguishable and inseparable.

  129. Distinguishable persons in the sense that we can see

  130. their distinctiveness, how they interact with each other

  131. and in the world.

  132. Their mutual glorifying of each other, self-giving love.

  133. They're distinguishable and they're inseparably one.

  134. So one that it is impossible to pull them apart.

  135. I think perhaps at this point we're meant to think

  136. of the marriage oneness that we read about

  137. in Genesis 2, verse 24.

    Genesis 2:24

  138. If you remember that, the man will leave his father and mother

  139. and the two will become one flesh.

  140. I think we're meant to kind of think of that sort of thing,

  141. that distinctiveness of the marriage relationship,

  142. serving one another, and our relationship in Christ

  143. inseparably joining us together.

  144. Now, you know, I've preached a few times here now,

  145. and you know that occasionally I mention Joe,

  146. and perhaps some of you think I can't stop talking about her.

  147. But one of the things about marriage is this,

  148. that when you are actually one with someone,

  149. they are a huge part of your life.

  150. You don't just step into a different place

  151. and feel like you're apart from them.

  152. There is an intimacy that you share in that relationship

  153. that you carry with you wherever you go.

  154. Well, I want to say to you this,

  155. that oneness is something that marrieds experience in part,

  156. but that married or single,

  157. we experience in its fullness in Christ.

  158. If you are single, you are not missing out on this promise.

  159. You get the real thing.

  160. Marriage is like the sermon illustration

  161. that I so often use.

  162. The oneness that's being talked about here in Christ

  163. is the real thing.

  164. And it's something that we're expected to express

  165. as a community, a church community.

  166. One like God.

  167. The next point he goes on to make,

  168. which he really focuses on,

  169. it comes up in verse 21,

  170. but he really focuses on in verse 22,

  171. is that we're also one with God.

  172. Let me read verse 22 out.

  173. The glory that you have given me,

  174. I have given to them,

  175. that they may be one,

  176. even as we are one,

  177. I in them,

  178. and you in me.

  179. It's the second time he speaks about being one.

  180. Verse 21, verse 22, and verse 23,

  181. he repeats this desire for us to be one.

  182. So when we read these verses,

  183. what we discover is that we're saved to be one like God,

  184. and we're saved to be one with God.

  185. The glory that Jesus shares with us

  186. is his completed work at the cross.

  187. We discover that in the first week of this series.

  188. So three weeks ago, two weeks ago.

  189. And remember that Jesus' prayer for himself was,

  190. glorify me.

  191. And here he's saying that we will share in that glory.

  192. In other words,

  193. we will experience the fruit of his saving work.

  194. In Christ, we are one with God.

  195. We are united so deeply and profoundly

  196. through Jesus at the cross

  197. that we are not just like the Father,

  198. the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

  199. Not just one like them,

  200. but one with the Father,

  201. the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

  202. Distinguishable, dare I say,

  203. distinguishable and inseparable from God.

  204. Not God,

  205. but distinguishable and inseparable from him.

  206. And this is another truth

  207. that I can only imagine

  208. in terms of from lesser to greater.

  209. So to think of the relationships

  210. that I share with my friends and family,

  211. and to think beyond that,

  212. to realize that that is just a pale shadow

  213. of what Jesus is talking about here

  214. in terms of our relationship with God.

  215. Jesus' prayer

  216. is that we might experience this truth

  217. in our lives together.

  218. It's an amazing thing.

  219. Finally,

  220. so we've had one like God,

  221. one with God,

  222. and the final point he makes

  223. is that we are one for God.

  224. A lot hangs on this.

  225. Jesus reveals in his prayer

  226. that our unity reveals his nature.

  227. He says in verse 23,

  228. I in them and you in me

  229. that they may become perfectly one

  230. so that the world may know

  231. that you sent me

  232. and love them even as you loved me.

  233. This unity is meant to be visible,

  234. not in our statement of beliefs,

  235. but in our actions,

  236. our lives together.

  237. Not in isolation,

  238. but actually in the world.

  239. Our unity is meant to be so clear

  240. and distinct that the world knows

  241. that Jesus was sent from the Father.

  242. It's important to God

  243. that the Son is vindicated before the world.

  244. And there will come a time

  245. when every knee will bow before Jesus,

  246. but we are the first place

  247. that this starts to happen.

  248. The world will see Jesus' glory

  249. through our unity.

  250. unity.

  251. This is the role that God has given us

  252. in the world.

  253. Our unity was meant to be so clear

  254. and distinct that the world knows

  255. that Jesus was sent from the Father

  256. and that we are loved by the Father.

  257. It's also the way God shows his love for us.

  258. Unity like this is supernatural.

  259. We can't do it ourselves.

  260. We divide and divide and divide again

  261. until we're comfortable with the people around us,

  262. or lonely, or a mixture of both.

  263. The unity that God is working in us

  264. is astoundingly different.

  265. It's not of this world.

  266. And I don't use these phrases

  267. to undermine the believability

  268. of what I'm saying.

  269. I use them

  270. because that's what people think

  271. when they see it lived out.

  272. The unity of God

  273. expressed by us

  274. and with him

  275. is astounding.

  276. We were talking to some friends recently

  277. and they were talking about

  278. how they're moving

  279. from one place to another

  280. and how difficult it is

  281. for them to settle in.

  282. They're not Christians.

  283. How hard it is

  284. to break into a new community.

  285. Have you thought about

  286. what it's like

  287. when you travel

  288. from one place to another

  289. as a Christian

  290. and you go into a church community?

  291. Yeah, they're a bunch of strangers.

  292. You don't really know them.

  293. But in some sense,

  294. you really do know them as well.

  295. And you feel so at home

  296. and comfortable in their presence.

  297. Friends,

  298. Jesus' prayer is that

  299. we might experience

  300. this truth in our lives together

  301. day by day.

  302. But can I ask you this?

  303. Is it our desire?

  304. Is it our prayer?

  305. Is it our goal?

  306. Jesus gets personal

  307. and this is the one thing

  308. he emphasizes.

  309. Is it the thing

  310. that we yearn for?

  311. I'm going to suggest

  312. that even if it is,

  313. we don't conform to it.

  314. Now, if you're a visitor here

  315. and you're starting to wonder

  316. what's going on here,

  317. what kind of church

  318. have I come into?

  319. Please understand

  320. we're a bunch of people

  321. who are not perfect.

  322. We're not the finished work.

  323. Jesus is praying here

  324. that this might be perfected in us.

  325. So please allow

  326. that we're a work in progress

  327. and the reality

  328. that there are problems

  329. within this church family

  330. that we need to deal with.

  331. Who do you feel awkward around?

  332. So this I'm speaking

  333. to the members

  334. of the congregation here now.

  335. Who do you feel awkward around?

  336. Who do you avoid?

  337. Who are you holding

  338. a grudge against?

  339. Who is holding a grudge

  340. against you

  341. that you know about?

  342. Why have we allowed

  343. separation

  344. within

  345. the inseparable?

  346. Perhaps you're thinking,

  347. well,

  348. if only you knew

  349. what they did to me,

  350. then you'd understand.

  351. Let me say this.

  352. And I say this

  353. knowing the challenges

  354. of broken relationships.

  355. Whatever they did to you

  356. was an offense

  357. against God first.

  358. And God the Son

  359. died

  360. to deal with it.

  361. Surely

  362. we should be prepared

  363. to do the same.

  364. Surely

  365. this is what Jesus

  366. is calling us to do.

  367. I'm going to encourage you

  368. now,

  369. right now,

  370. to make a list.

  371. Write down the names

  372. or put them in your phone

  373. or mentally log them.

  374. The names of the people

  375. you need

  376. to reconcile to.

  377. Log that list of names.

  378. Resolve to deal

  379. with that list

  380. starting today.

  381. begin where

  382. Jesus began

  383. by praying

  384. that unity

  385. would reign

  386. despite the existence

  387. of that list.

  388. And if anyone

  389. on that list

  390. is too big

  391. for you to contemplate

  392. dealing with,

  393. then seek help.

  394. Talk to someone.

  395. Talk to a friend.

  396. Talk to your small group leader.

  397. To an elder.

  398. The thought of even this

  399. may terrify you.

  400. And perhaps you're in a place

  401. where you really can't even

  402. think about approaching someone.

  403. You really struggle

  404. to engage with someone

  405. in a conflict type scenario.

  406. I'm going to say something

  407. to you

  408. that I think

  409. is wisdom.

  410. And I hope,

  411. I'm not trying to offend you

  412. if you struggle

  413. with the issue of psychology.

  414. But I'm going to say this.

  415. If the thought

  416. of actually engaging

  417. with someone

  418. where a relationship

  419. is broken down

  420. and it's a brother

  421. or sister in Christ,

  422. then I would say to you,

  423. seek professional help

  424. so that you can

  425. fulfill

  426. Jesus' desire

  427. and prayer

  428. for us

  429. that we might be unified.

  430. Whatever it takes

  431. to realize the unity

  432. that Jesus died

  433. to save us for.

  434. For us

  435. to be distinguishable

  436. and inseparable.

  437. To be devoted

  438. to joyfully

  439. giving ourselves

  440. to one another.

  441. What a wonderful thing

  442. it is

  443. that Jesus

  444. is praying for here.

  445. Let this,

  446. if anything,

  447. be our battle cry.

  448. So Jesus prays

  449. for oneness.

  450. And then he goes on

  451. to pray

  452. that that oneness

  453. might be experienced

  454. together

  455. in proximity.

  456. All along,

  457. Jesus has been praying

  458. from the perspective

  459. of the big picture

  460. and you can see

  461. how he keeps breaking

  462. into how he's,

  463. to shape his prayer.

  464. But have you noticed

  465. already how personal

  466. this last section is?

  467. Oneness.

  468. And now,

  469. this prayer

  470. is about us

  471. all being together.

  472. He says in verse 24,

  473. Father,

  474. I desire

  475. that they also

  476. whom you have given me

  477. may be with me

  478. where I am

  479. to see my glory

  480. that you have given me

  481. because you loved me

  482. before the foundation

  483. of the world.

  484. Can you see

  485. how we're just being

  486. swept up

  487. personally

  488. in an eternal,

  489. abrasive,

  490. eternal perspective?

  491. Jesus prays

  492. for the elect,

  493. the ones the Father

  494. has given him

  495. and his heart's desire

  496. is that we be together

  497. with him.

  498. Notice that.

  499. He's praying about us

  500. like we're his close

  501. personal family.

  502. All this father

  503. and son language

  504. are now drawing us

  505. in as well

  506. to share in it.

  507. You know,

  508. even when we say

  509. our farewells,

  510. so for example,

  511. yesterday was Joe's birthday

  512. and so our daughter

  513. came up from Sydney

  514. and all the kids

  515. came over

  516. and we had a meal together

  517. and even as we're leaving

  518. at the end of that day,

  519. even as we're leaving

  520. after all the photos

  521. are done

  522. and Facebook posts

  523. have happened,

  524. all that sort of stuff,

  525. even as they're leaving,

  526. we're already,

  527. if you notice,

  528. how you're already thinking

  529. about the next time

  530. you'll get together.

  531. Have you noticed that?

  532. As we dropped Hannah off

  533. at the train station

  534. on the way to the church

  535. this morning,

  536. we were talking with her

  537. about the next time

  538. we would see her.

  539. It's a natural thing

  540. for us to do,

  541. isn't it?

  542. We love each other.

  543. We want to be

  544. in each other's presence.

  545. This is the kind of imagery

  546. that Jesus is invoking here.

  547. These people I am praying for

  548. are my close,

  549. close personal family.

  550. He's praying

  551. with an eye

  552. on the time

  553. when he knows

  554. that he'll be together

  555. again with us.

  556. And this prayer isn't just

  557. for his own personal desire.

  558. It's the same desire

  559. the Father has.

  560. So Jesus prays in line

  561. with the Father's will.

  562. The Father chose us

  563. and sent the Son

  564. to save us

  565. and plan for us all

  566. to be together

  567. since before the foundation

  568. of the world.

  569. This isn't plan B

  570. for a botched plan A.

  571. This isn't a passing feeling

  572. that God has.

  573. Friends for now,

  574. but you know,

  575. one of these ones

  576. that I'm going to kind of limit

  577. the amount of posts

  578. I see from them.

  579. This relationship

  580. is eternal in scope.

  581. And it's headed toward a place

  582. where Jesus' glory

  583. is unveiled.

  584. And glory unveiled

  585. in the sense

  586. of to be basked in

  587. rather than feared,

  588. to be delighted in,

  589. to be shared.

  590. But there's a pathway

  591. that Jesus must walk first

  592. because the Father

  593. is righteous

  594. or just.

  595. Same word in Greek.

  596. Jesus prays in verse 25.

  597. O righteous or just,

  598. Father,

  599. even though the world

  600. does not know you,

  601. I know you.

  602. And these know

  603. that you have sent me.

  604. I made known to them

  605. your name

  606. and I will continue

  607. to make it known

  608. that the love

  609. with which you have loved me

  610. may be in them

  611. and I in them.

  612. Verses 25 and 26.

  613. Jesus prays,

  614. Holy Father,

  615. when he prays for his disciples

  616. to be sanctified

  617. in the last section.

  618. Now he prays righteous

  619. or just,

  620. Father,

  621. because justice

  622. is the focus

  623. of what's about to come.

  624. Do you remember

  625. when Moses got a glimpse

  626. of God's glory?

  627. Two weeks ago

  628. we looked at this.

  629. When Moses got a glimpse

  630. of God's glory,

  631. as God passed,

  632. as we looked at Exodus

    Exodus 34:6

  633. chapter 34

  634. verses 6 and 7,

  635. if you want to

  636. look it back up,

  637. Moses asked

  638. to get a glimpse

  639. or get to see

  640. God's glory

  641. and Moses got a glimpse

  642. of God's glory.

  643. As God passed by Moses,

  644. he only showed him

  645. a glimpse.

  646. That's all Moses

  647. could cope with

  648. and live.

  649. And as he passed Moses,

  650. he declared his nature

  651. in these words.

  652. This is Exodus 34,

  653. 6 and 7.

  654. This is God

  655. declaring of himself,

  656. the Lord,

  657. the Lord,

  658. a God merciful

  659. and gracious,

  660. slow to anger

  661. and abounding

  662. in steadfast love

  663. and faithfulness,

  664. keeping steadfast love

  665. for thousands,

  666. forgiving iniquity

  667. and transgression

  668. and sin,

  669. but who will by no means

  670. clear the guilty,

  671. visiting the iniquity

  672. of the fathers

  673. on the children

  674. and the children's children

  675. to the third

  676. and fourth generation.

  677. The experience

  678. of God's people

  679. right up to Jesus.

  680. God is absolutely just.

  681. No sin goes unpaid for.

  682. Either it's paid for

  683. at the cross

  684. or you carry it yourself.

  685. The cross is where

  686. God's love

  687. and justice meet.

  688. So at the cross,

  689. Jesus has made God

  690. known to us

  691. in his fullness.

  692. Not simply in being present

  693. in human form

  694. or in his teaching

  695. about God

  696. or his example

  697. of how to live,

  698. all those things

  699. are all important,

  700. but in his dying for us.

  701. This is the love

  702. that Jesus is talking about

  703. in John 13, 34.

  704. So this is earlier

  705. in his conversation

  706. with his disciples

  707. over this meal.

  708. In verse 34,

  709. he says this,

  710. A new commandment

  711. I give you

  712. that you love

  713. one another.

  714. Just as I have loved you,

  715. you also are

  716. to love one another.

  717. By this,

  718. all people will know

  719. that you are my disciples

  720. if you have love

  721. for one another.

  722. Jesus' love

  723. turns away

  724. God's righteous judgment.

  725. It opens the way

  726. into God's

  727. unfiltered presence.

  728. It enables us

  729. to see his glory

  730. and live,

  731. to know that

  732. that point of family

  733. reunification

  734. is coming

  735. and to not fear it

  736. but to delight in it,

  737. to long for it.

  738. If we understand

  739. the cross

  740. as God intended to,

  741. then we will see

  742. what's about to come

  743. in the Gospel of John

  744. as love,

  745. an expression of love.

  746. If we believe in him,

  747. then this cross-shaped love

  748. applies to us.

  749. It's our experience

  750. of what Jesus

  751. is praying about here.

  752. just as I have loved you,

  753. Jesus says.

  754. The cross,

  755. the moment Jesus

  756. is glorified,

  757. the moment we know

  758. how loved we are,

  759. the moment we are loved

  760. beyond measure,

  761. personally.

  762. When you think of

  763. Jesus' desire

  764. is to be with us,

  765. that moment in history

  766. at the cross

  767. is like those

  768. family reunions,

  769. the fierceness

  770. of God's embrace,

  771. the breath against our neck

  772. as he envelops us,

  773. the warmth of God's greeting,

  774. the intimacy of bonds

  775. that go beyond words.

  776. This is the imagery

  777. that's being used here

  778. of what he's about

  779. to do at the cross.

  780. This is the eternal desire

  781. of God for us,

  782. for love and justice

  783. to meet,

  784. but not in our bodies.

  785. Thank God.

  786. And this love

  787. is made possible

  788. through the cross.

  789. Love where justice

  790. is turned away from us

  791. is made possible

  792. at the cross.

  793. So friends,

  794. we never move from the cross.

  795. We never move on from it.

  796. This isn't like basic teachings

  797. and then you become

  798. more mature as a Christian

  799. and you start to understand

  800. some of the bigger words.

  801. We never move on from this.

  802. It remains forever

  803. the foundation of our unity

  804. with God and with each other,

  805. our pattern for relating

  806. to God and to each other,

  807. our personal experience

  808. of the Father's love for us,

  809. our way of loving the world

  810. together.

  811. This is what our friends

  812. and family

  813. who aren't yet Christians

  814. should see modeled in us,

  815. a cross-shaped love.

  816. Not just see modeled in us though,

  817. but they should experience it

  818. when they're included

  819. in our social gatherings,

  820. when we celebrate

  821. as we often do.

  822. We should be celebrating

  823. alongside our friends

  824. who are still of the world.

  825. Anyone who socializes with us,

  826. whether that be members

  827. of the LGBTI community

  828. or the homeless

  829. or anyone else,

  830. should feel welcome

  831. in our midst,

  832. in our gatherings.

  833. They should feel safe.

  834. They should feel loved

  835. with this distinctive kind of love.

  836. This is the community

  837. that God is calling us to be,

  838. a community that just shows

  839. just how wonderfully God

  840. has loved us.

  841. It doesn't just show it,

  842. but actually enables people

  843. who don't yet know Jesus

  844. as their Savior

  845. to experience it personally

  846. through us

  847. and to see their way toward

  848. believing in Jesus too.

  849. So in conclusion then,

  850. Jesus prays that the Father

  851. will glorify him

  852. and he does at the cross.

  853. Jesus prays that the Father

  854. will sanctify his disciples

  855. and through them

  856. all who follow

  857. and he does

  858. by the cross.

  859. And Jesus prays

  860. that the Father

  861. will unify us all

  862. and he is doing

  863. as a community of people

  864. who experience

  865. his love daily

  866. through the cross.

  867. Let me pray.

  868. Father God,

  869. we are so good

  870. at building our own

  871. kingdoms,

  872. our own designs

  873. around our lives,

  874. even our own desires

  875. around your church here.

  876. We very quickly

  877. come up with ideas

  878. of what this church family

  879. should look like.

  880. But I pray, Father,

  881. through looking

  882. at the Son's prayer,

  883. that Son's prayer

  884. over us,

  885. that we might have

  886. a bit more of a sense

  887. of what you desire

  888. for us

  889. and that you might stir

  890. in our hearts

  891. a desire for the same.

  892. And as that desire

  893. is stirred, Lord,

  894. that you would grow

  895. in us

  896. this sense of awe

  897. at the glory

  898. that you've shown

  899. of yourself

  900. at the cross.

  901. The sense of

  902. unity that we have

  903. through your Son

  904. with you

  905. through the cross

  906. and that it might

  907. colour and shape

  908. everything we try

  909. to build in your name.

  910. In Jesus' name

  911. we pray.

  912. Amen.

  913. Amen.

  914. Amen.

  915. Amen.

  916. Amen.

  917. Amen.

  918. Amen.

  919. Amen.
