  1. very well led by the musicians, so thank you for that.

  2. I was thinking whether I'd share this with you, and I think I will.

  3. The first of the three songs we sang, I find a very difficult song.

  4. It's really good. I mean, the words are wonderful.

  5. But I won't go into details, but I was in a particularly difficult stage in my life

  6. with someone I loved very deeply, very sick.

  7. And I went to church, and that song was sung.

  8. And the words were very helpful to me, but the tune, I think, doesn't work.

  9. It's sort of too happy.

  10. You know, the words are taken from the book of Job, of course,

  11. the Lord gives and the Lord takes away.

  12. That's the truth.

  13. And it's a wonderful truth and an important truth.

  14. But it's not a light-hearted truth.

  15. You know, we are thankful for what the Lord gives us,

  16. and what the Lord gives us, he can take away.

  17. And that can be very painful.

  18. Very, very painful.

  19. So, I don't know why I'm sharing this with you,

  20. but it's worth, and particularly musos, you did a great job this morning,

  21. but sometimes, you know, the songwriters have given us wonderful words,

  22. but the music doesn't quite match.

  23. I find that tune just a little bit too boppy,

  24. to be singing about the Lord gives and the Lord takes away.

  25. That's so sombre.

  26. I'm not being critical of anyone, you understand.

  27. I'm just sharing with you my own emotions.

  28. And I was standing there not singing.

  29. I was hoping no one would notice me not singing,

  30. but I was quite moved by just remembering the time

  31. when my loved one actually recovered,

  32. and the Lord did not take that loved one on that particular occasion.

  33. But I was so caught up with not being able to cope with a song

  34. that, with its music, seemed to trivialise something so profound

  35. as the Lord gives and the Lord takes away.

  36. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

  37. Again, I'm sorry.

  38. That's probably an utter irrelevance, so I apologise for that.

  39. So why I feel free to do that is that over this weekend,

  40. we've sort of shortened what we've been doing.

  41. I'm getting tired, you see, and I think you're getting tired as well.

  42. So we started looking at the books of 1 and 2 Kings, right?

  43. The first talk on Friday night, some of you weren't with us,

  44. but those of you who were, we looked at the whole of the book of 2 Kings

  45. and tried to get oriented to that.

  46. And then yesterday morning, we looked at a long section of 2 Kings, chapter 2,

    2 Kings 2 chapter mention

  47. which was quite a long narrative.

  48. And then yesterday in the second talk,

  49. we narrowed down and looked at two incidents,

  50. rather dramatic incidents.

  51. Well, now we're just going to look at one incident, all right?

  52. I thought I had time to talk about my own personal experience

  53. in the beginning.

  54. I probably will turn out to regret that.

  55. But before we turn to 2 Kings, chapter 4,

    2 Kings 4 chapter mention

  56. and the incident we want to look at there in the life of Elisha,

  57. I want to think again with you for a moment

  58. about the accounts of the life of Jesus in the New Testament.

  59. Because if you were with us yesterday,

  60. you'll know that we're noticing connections and similarities

  61. between the life of Elisha and the life of Jesus.

  62. And those connections sometimes are quite remarkable

  63. and illuminating.

  64. But one of the striking things,

  65. we noticed yesterday we were thinking about the miracles,

  66. the accounts of the miracles of Jesus

  67. and what we were to make of them.

  68. But there's another feature.

  69. I often feel I'd love to come to the Gospels

  70. as though I'd never seen them before.

  71. I wonder how I'd react.

  72. And it's hard to work it out, isn't it?

  73. Because most of us are so familiar with the Gospels.

  74. And even if we're not familiar with the accounts of Jesus,

  75. most of us probably have a reasonable familiarity

  76. with the stories and the general kind of material.

  77. I'd love to come to it for the first time.

  78. And sometimes you meet somebody who's never really heard about Jesus

  79. and they read a Gospel.

  80. And a whole lot of things strike them.

  81. And one of the remarkable things that I think,

  82. even if you don't notice it, probably strikes you,

  83. is the amount of space given in the account of the life of Jesus Christ.

  84. The amount of space given to Jesus dealing with really, really ordinary people.

  85. Right?

  86. Here is the greatest man who has ever lived.

  87. Undeniable, undebatable, that particular proposition.

  88. The greatest man who has ever lived.

  89. If you think it's debatable, please come up with an alternative.

  90. Who's greater?

  91. The greatest man who has ever lived.

  92. And as the story of his life is told,

  93. one of the things that is absolutely, perfectly crystal clear

  94. is that this man cared about the poor

  95. and the outcast

  96. and the troubled individuals who crossed his path

  97. and he encountered.

  98. And I think this is curious.

  99. If you go back, you know, to the ancient world

  100. and really great figures that we know about,

  101. the biographies of great figures

  102. do not usually give a great deal of attention

  103. to encounters with insignificant people.

  104. If you had an account,

  105. and of course there are plenty of them,

  106. sorry, there are a number of them,

  107. accounts of the life of Julius Caesar,

  108. someone like that,

  109. you won't find a lot of space

  110. given to how he dealt with powerless,

  111. unimportant individuals.

  112. Now I say ordinary and insignificant,

  113. I use those sort of words,

  114. but it's perfectly clear from the records

  115. that that's not how Jesus regarded people.

  116. That's not how he saw people.

  117. Again and again and again,

  118. when such a person crossed his path,

  119. he gave them his attention.

  120. He listened to them

  121. and he helped them.

  122. To him, they were very, very far

  123. from being insignificant.

  124. Mind you, you could misunderstand this.

  125. It's not as though Jesus was a kind of social activist

  126. who cared only for the less privileged in society.

  127. You read the accounts

  128. and you see he didn't avoid

  129. the wealthy and the influential and the powerful.

  130. You think about his dealings with Nicodemus,

  131. who was a ruler of the Jews,

  132. or the young man who had great possessions,

  133. or Jairus, one of the rulers of the synagogue.

  134. I'm simply drawing attention to the way in which

  135. the troubles of those without status

  136. and without wealth and without position

  137. were never dismissed as beneath Jesus

  138. or unworthy of his attention.

  139. Indeed, this aspect of Jesus' treatment of people

  140. gained him a reputation

  141. among the so-called respectable people.

  142. He was called one who eats with

  143. and is a friend of tax collectors and sinners.

  144. And that was not meant as a compliment.

  145. You might think of the way in which

  146. famously Jesus treated children.

  147. When those around him, his disciples,

  148. thought, we don't want Jesus bothered

  149. by the little ones.

  150. It wasn't Jesus' attitude, was it?

  151. Let the children come to me.

  152. In this humble kindness of Jesus,

  153. you see, you often think of things about Jesus

  154. that, you know, God among us.

  155. That's what he was.

  156. And therefore, as you look at Jesus,

  157. you're learning about what God is like.

  158. I don't think we often think that this aspect

  159. of Jesus and his behaviour

  160. and his treatment of people

  161. was a display of what God his Father is like.

  162. Many of Jesus' encounters with powerless,

  163. troubled individuals

  164. were occasions for a mighty work by Jesus,

  165. the kind of thing we were thinking about yesterday.

  166. He gave sight to blind people.

  167. He gave strength to lame people.

  168. He gave hearing to deaf people.

  169. He even gave life to dead people.

  170. In Jesus, you see, the power of God

  171. was something that was not just a display

  172. that you say, wow,

  173. we've done that a couple of times.

  174. It was not just a display that caused you

  175. to be overwhelmed with wonder

  176. and surprise and spectacle.

  177. No, the power of God in Jesus

  178. amplified God's kindness

  179. and his love towards ordinary people.

  180. Someone put it like this,

  181. God magnifies his goodness with his power.

  182. The power of God is not just raw power.

  183. It's power that magnifies his goodness

  184. and his kindness.

  185. Now, I say all that because, once again,

  186. this aspect of the New Testament Gospels

  187. has a significant antecedent.

  188. where we look at the Old Testament stories

  189. of Elijah

  190. and even more so,

  191. the one who came after him,

  192. Elisha,

  193. include a surprising number of stories

  194. of the prophets' encounters

  195. with ordinary people.

  196. Now, you don't find this so much

  197. with anyone else in the Old Testament.

  198. You might find it occasionally,

  199. but not to the same degree,

  200. not to the same extent

  201. as you find with Elijah and Elisha.

  202. These prophets

  203. were major players

  204. in the political life of Israel.

  205. We're not looking today

  206. at 2 Kings chapter 3,

    2 Kings 3 chapter mention

  207. but if you read 2 Kings chapter 3,

    2 Kings 3 chapter mention

  208. that's exactly what you'll see.

  209. You'll see Elisha involved

  210. in the nation's conflicts

  211. with the nation's roundabout,

  212. involved, in other words,

  213. with things as significant as wars.

  214. Elijah and Elisha

  215. were figures who would go

  216. and confront kings

  217. with their wicked ways.

  218. They would proclaim

  219. the word of the Lord

  220. to the nation's leaders

  221. at times of crisis.

  222. However,

  223. the record of their lives,

  224. Elijah and especially Elisha,

  225. also are marked by stories

  226. of their dealings

  227. with suffering,

  228. ordinary individuals.

  229. And 2 Kings chapter 4

    2 Kings 4 chapter mention

  230. through to chapter 8,

  231. or the beginning

  232. of chapter 8 at least,

  233. we find a series of stories

  234. about Elisha's dealings

  235. with powerless people

  236. facing various troubles.

  237. It's quite striking.

  238. If you were reading the story,

  239. we haven't had time to do this

  240. to work right through it,

  241. but if you're reading the story

  242. of 2 Kings

  243. and you were read

  244. through chapter 3

  245. and it's sort of big political

  246. sort of games going on

  247. and Elisha involved

  248. at that level,

  249. and then the sudden movement

  250. from his very public role

  251. there in that major

  252. military campaign

  253. to now a whole series

  254. of stories

  255. of individuals

  256. and their needs,

  257. the shift is quite striking.

  258. For in these stories,

  259. we once again see

  260. the power of God

  261. displayed for the sake

  262. of needy individuals.

  263. God's goodness

  264. magnified

  265. by his power.

  266. God's power

  267. employed

  268. to display

  269. his goodness.

  270. Now,

  271. we are going to

  272. content ourselves

  273. this morning

  274. because you're tired

  275. and I'm tired

  276. with just listening

  277. to the first

  278. of these stories,

  279. but I do encourage you

  280. to read on

  281. and I know you've done

  282. that already,

  283. but after this weekend

  284. you might like to read

  285. through again

  286. and enjoy each

  287. of these remarkable

  288. narratives

  289. of Elisha's encounter

  290. with ordinary people.

  291. The first one

  292. read to us

  293. a moment ago

  294. is this encounter

  295. with a poor

  296. troubled widow

  297. who brought her

  298. a need

  299. to the attention

  300. of Elisha

  301. and the story

  302. we're just going

  303. to follow it carefully

  304. and see how it unfolds

  305. in three simple scenes

  306. but I think we will see

  307. it reveals more

  308. than first meets the eye.

  309. So come with me

  310. to witness

  311. this first little incident.

  312. Scene one

  313. begins like this.

  314. We're at 2 Kings

  315. chapter four

  316. verse one.

  317. Now the wife

  318. of one of the sons

  319. of the prophets.

  320. That's who we meet.

  321. The wife

  322. of one of the sons

  323. of the prophets.

  324. We don't know precisely

  325. where this took place

  326. but if you were

  327. with us yesterday

  328. we've heard of

  329. these group

  330. the sons of the prophets

  331. who were followers

  332. of Elijah

  333. and then Elisha.

  334. I like to think of them

  335. and describe them

  336. as disciples

  337. of Elijah and Elisha.

  338. We met a group

  339. of them in Bethel

  340. and we met another group

  341. of them in Jericho

  342. but there were probably

  343. others in various locations

  344. throughout the land

  345. of Israel

  346. so we don't know

  347. exactly where

  348. this happened

  349. but here we learn

  350. that the sons

  351. of the prophets

  352. had wives

  353. and families.

  354. They were not

  355. sort of monastic people.

  356. They were apparently

  357. not cut off

  358. from the ordinary

  359. social and economic

  360. life of the community.

  361. the woman's connection

  362. to the sons

  363. of the prophets

  364. is important

  365. because she too

  366. we might say

  367. was a follower

  368. of Elijah and Elisha.

  369. In our comparison

  370. with the gospels

  371. this story is like

  372. the stories

  373. of Jesus'

  374. dealings with those

  375. who followed him.

  376. However the wording

  377. and literally

  378. it says this

  379. listen to this

  380. how it goes literally

  381. and a certain woman

  382. from the wives

  383. of the sons

  384. of the prophets

  385. and the wording

  386. sort of suggests

  387. she's not a particularly

  388. important person

  389. she's sort of obscure

  390. nobody's really

  391. heard of her

  392. she's not even named

  393. and her name

  394. doesn't seem to be

  395. even been remembered

  396. from this story

  397. and to all

  398. to all appearances

  399. she's a very

  400. unimportant

  401. person.

  402. Well the woman

  403. came to the prophet

  404. with a pressing

  405. problem.

  406. she,

  407. verse 1 again

  408. she cried to Elisha

  409. your servant

  410. my husband

  411. is dead

  412. and you know

  413. that your servant

  414. feared the Lord

  415. that's my

  416. her husband

  417. feared the Lord

  418. but the creditor

  419. has come

  420. to take my

  421. two children

  422. to be his slaves.

  423. Let's try

  424. and understand

  425. the situation

  426. this poor woman

  427. was in.

  428. This was a cry

  429. for help

  430. and directing

  431. her cry

  432. to the prophet

  433. was an act

  434. of faith

  435. we might say

  436. in effect

  437. her cry

  438. was a prayer

  439. and as we

  440. listen to the

  441. woman's cry

  442. we learn

  443. that she

  444. was a widow

  445. evidently

  446. recently bereaved

  447. she was in

  448. a state of

  449. grief

  450. my husband

  451. is dead

  452. she says

  453. and twice

  454. we hear her

  455. refer to her

  456. husband

  457. as Elisha's

  458. servant.

  459. prophet

  460. this is part

  461. of the evidence

  462. that leads me

  463. to conclude

  464. that the sons

  465. of the prophet

  466. were that little

  467. phrase

  468. the sons

  469. of the prophets

  470. they were people

  471. committed

  472. to Elisha

  473. and previously

  474. to Elijah

  475. and furthermore

  476. as though to

  477. underline her point

  478. her husband

  479. she says

  480. feared the Lord

  481. that you'll be

  482. aware if you're

  483. a Bible reader

  484. is not an

  485. uncommon phrase

  486. in the Old

  487. Testament

  488. particularly in

  489. the Old

  490. Testament

  491. and it's a

  492. very important

  493. phrase

  494. feared the Lord

  495. it doesn't mean

  496. you're a person

  497. who's going around

  498. frightened of God

  499. that's not what

  500. it means

  501. and it means

  502. it talks about

  503. the attitude

  504. of your heart

  505. you

  506. you

  507. you bow

  508. to the greatness

  509. and the goodness

  510. of God

  511. you

  512. accept

  513. you take him

  514. seriously

  515. and you're

  516. heart

  517. and mind

  518. is

  519. is so

  520. shaped

  521. by your

  522. taking God

  523. seriously

  524. that you

  525. live

  526. trusting him

  527. and you live

  528. obeying him

  529. this man

  530. this woman's

  531. husband

  532. feared the Lord

  533. and we

  534. learn here

  535. that Elisha

  536. knew him

  537. Elisha knew

  538. this man

  539. and knew

  540. his faithfulness

  541. and again

  542. we're given

  543. the impression

  544. of a close

  545. relationship

  546. between Elisha

  547. and the sons

  548. of the prophets

  549. he knew

  550. his disciples

  551. individually

  552. and personally

  553. the grieving

  554. widow's

  555. distress

  556. was intensified

  557. so she's grieving

  558. but on top

  559. of that

  560. there is a threat

  561. now

  562. of her losing

  563. her children

  564. because of a

  565. debt

  566. that had been

  567. incurred

  568. presumably by

  569. her husband

  570. we don't know

  571. the circumstances

  572. behind this

  573. however

  574. the creditor

  575. was now

  576. pressing

  577. what he saw

  578. as his legal

  579. rights

  580. and demanding

  581. that the

  582. woman's two

  583. children

  584. now become

  585. his slaves

  586. because of

  587. what

  588. she owed

  589. him

  590. what a terrible

  591. situation

  592. that is

  593. isn't it

  594. just imagine

  595. being in that

  596. situation

  597. if you don't

  598. pay off

  599. your Master

  600. card

  601. they come

  602. and get

  603. your kids

  604. well

  605. debt's a

  606. pretty serious

  607. thing

  608. and it's

  609. interesting

  610. the Old

  611. Testament

  612. law

  613. I've been

  614. given a

  615. glimpse of

  616. the questions

  617. that are

  618. coming up

  619. in Q&A

  620. later on

  621. I thought

  622. they were

  623. going to be

  624. sifted so

  625. they'd only

  626. be easy

  627. ones

  628. didn't work

  629. no wonder

  630. Dave's gone

  631. off sticky

  632. I could have

  633. a go at him

  634. for not

  635. actually sifting

  636. them and

  637. only having

  638. easy ones

  639. coming through

  640. but there is

  641. a question

  642. there I

  643. can't remember

  644. the details

  645. and we'll

  646. look at it

  647. later on

  648. but about

  649. Old Testament

  650. law

  651. and Old

  652. Testament law

  653. needs to be

  654. read with

  655. care

  656. Old Testament

  657. law is not

  658. law for

  659. today

  660. today we're

  661. not living

  662. in Israel

  663. we're not

  664. living in

  665. the ancient

  666. world that

  667. Israel inhabited

  668. that's one of

  669. the things to

  670. say about

  671. reading the

  672. ancient law

  673. but the

  674. Old Testament

  675. law is

  676. God given

  677. for Israel

  678. in Old

  679. Testament

  680. times

  681. no getting

  682. away from

  683. that

  684. it's

  685. God given

  686. law

  687. it's

  688. God's

  689. law

  690. therefore

  691. it's

  692. worth

  693. reading

  694. without

  695. saying we

  696. are under

  697. this law

  698. that we're

  699. supposed to

  700. keep this

  701. law in

  702. all its

  703. details

  704. but certainly

  705. it's worth

  706. reading because

  707. it's God

  708. given

  709. it's worth

  710. reading in

  711. its context

  712. and so on

  713. and so it's

  714. interesting to do

  715. a little bit of a

  716. study and I did

  717. and I've summarised

  718. the results on

  719. your notes there

  720. you can look up

  721. the references

  722. we're not going

  723. to do that

  724. now but let me

  725. just summarise

  726. what I learnt

  727. by having a little

  728. bit of a look

  729. at debt

  730. and Old

  731. Testament law

  732. about debt

  733. it's taken

  734. seriously

  735. that's the first

  736. thing I notice

  737. in Old

  738. Testament law

  739. and it is a

  740. serious matter

  741. and it is

  742. something that

  743. can lead to

  744. serious social

  745. problems in

  746. any society

  747. and I do

  748. find myself

  749. occasionally

  750. encouraging young

  751. people who are

  752. living in a

  753. society where a

  754. whole lot of

  755. people are really

  756. anxious to get

  757. you into debt

  758. they give you

  759. very very easy

  760. credit

  761. you can get

  762. into a lot of

  763. trouble

  764. and it's not a

  765. bad idea to

  766. see again I'm

  767. not being

  768. legalistic about

  769. this but to

  770. see how much

  771. you can take

  772. your path through

  773. life without

  774. getting into

  775. debt

  776. if you can't

  777. afford it

  778. don't buy it

  779. don't get into

  780. debt

  781. now there are

  782. circumstances in

  783. which our

  784. society has been

  785. structured in such

  786. a way as debt

  787. is necessary

  788. buying homes and

  789. things like that

  790. I understand that

  791. I'm not saying

  792. this is an

  793. absolute law

  794. but in your

  795. lifestyle live

  796. within your

  797. means

  798. don't run up

  799. your credit

  800. card account

  801. don't get into

  802. trouble and a

  803. lot of people do

  804. get into serious

  805. trouble in that

  806. area and then

  807. have to go and

  808. get help from

  809. other people and

  810. they're a burden

  811. on other people

  812. which they

  813. wouldn't necessarily

  814. have been if

  815. they'd lived

  816. within their

  817. means so the

  818. first thing I

  819. notice and if

  820. you look up all

  821. those references

  822. you see that

  823. is that debt

  824. is a serious

  825. matter and can

  826. cause serious

  827. social problems

  828. serious problems

  829. for individuals

  830. and in Israel

  831. we have God's

  832. law with a

  833. number of

  834. provisions around

  835. debt and

  836. lending and you

  837. get the impression

  838. or I get the

  839. impression that the

  840. Old Testament law

  841. God's law about

  842. lending in Old

  843. Testament Israel

  844. is generally

  845. designed to

  846. protect the

  847. poor and the

  848. vulnerable from

  849. exploitation which

  850. is the very thing

  851. that happens in

  852. our society.

  853. The easiest credit

  854. to get in our

  855. society I suspect I

  856. don't think there

  857. can be anything

  858. easier than a

  859. credit card and

  860. because it's easy

  861. and lots of people

  862. will get caught up

  863. in it those who

  864. issue the credit

  865. cards charge an

  866. unbelievable rate of

  867. interest that you

  868. are sort of many

  869. people are sort of

  870. unaware of as they

  871. start using these

  872. things and there's

  873. a terrific trap

  874. there.

  875. I'm not really

  876. meaning to go on

  877. about credit

  878. cards so stop me

  879. doing that.

  880. But it's worth

  881. noting briefly what

  882. God's law in the

  883. Old Testament had to

  884. say about debt

  885. because debt lies

  886. behind this story

  887. that's before us

  888. and four points

  889. and you can follow

  890. up the references

  891. on the notes as I

  892. say.

  893. The first point is

  894. that while lending

  895. to a poor person

  896. was permitted and

  897. actually even

  898. encouraged in the

  899. Old Testament law

  900. charging interest

  901. on the loan in

  902. such circumstances

  903. was forbidden.

  904. You can look up

  905. those references.

  906. The word that we

  907. have in our little

  908. narrative creditor

  909. anybody got an

  910. NIV what word do

  911. they have there

  912. instead of creditor?

  913. They have creditor?

  914. The word is

  915. elsewhere in

  916. Old Testament law

  917. money lender.

  918. It's the same

  919. Hebrew word and

  920. when that word is

  921. used it almost

  922. always refers to

  923. an unscrupulous

  924. profit oriented

  925. form of lending.

  926. The kind of

  927. lending that you

  928. get when you use

  929. your credit card.

  930. Directed specifically

  931. at one's needy

  932. fellow citizens.

  933. So this creditor

  934. in this story was

  935. really on the wrong

  936. side of God's law

  937. to start with.

  938. Because you're not

  939. meant to be lending

  940. to poor people

  941. and then charging

  942. interest.

  943. Lend to poor people

  944. by all means to

  945. help them but you

  946. don't exploit them.

  947. The second aspect

  948. that you learn in

  949. God's law is that

  950. when a loan is

  951. made on the basis

  952. of some item

  953. given as security

  954. the needs of the

  955. borrower must still

  956. be respected.

  957. And I've got a

  958. number of references

  959. there you can see

  960. how that is

  961. unpacked.

  962. It's not as though

  963. you then just

  964. ignore the needs

  965. of the person

  966. who is in debt

  967. to you.

  968. You take those

  969. into account.

  970. Thirdly according

  971. to Deuteronomy 15

    Deuteronomy 15:2

  972. verse 2

  973. at the end of

  974. every seven years

  975. a creditor was

  976. required to release

  977. his creditors

  978. from their debt.

  979. Goodness me

  980. the banks

  981. wouldn't do too

  982. well with that

  983. would they?

  984. Our society

  985. is built on a

  986. completely different

  987. basis but this is

  988. part of the way

  989. in which Israel

  990. was meant to

  991. function.

  992. Every seven years

  993. those in debt

  994. would be released

  995. from their debt.

  996. And there were

  997. even laws to say

  998. now you'd be very

  999. careful that you

  1000. don't if you're

  1001. lending you don't

  1002. take note of that

  1003. and refuse to lend

  1004. to someone because

  1005. the seventh year is

  1006. about to come up.

  1007. You know there's

  1008. laws around that

  1009. as well.

  1010. And fourth

  1011. in the extreme

  1012. case where a

  1013. person pledges

  1014. himself or

  1015. family members

  1016. as security

  1017. for a loan

  1018. they may not

  1019. be made

  1020. slaves

  1021. but may

  1022. serve as

  1023. hired servants

  1024. until the year

  1025. of Jubilee.

  1026. And again you

  1027. can see the

  1028. references there.

  1029. Now that's

  1030. interesting isn't

  1031. it?

  1032. There's an

  1033. ancient society

  1034. you don't say

  1035. we should be

  1036. obeying

  1037. there have been

  1038. groups of

  1039. Christians over

  1040. the years have

  1041. said this we

  1042. really ought to

  1043. be a society

  1044. in which we

  1045. keep all of

  1046. God's Old

  1047. Testament laws.

  1048. No they

  1049. weren't given

  1050. for that

  1051. purpose.

  1052. They weren't

  1053. given for

  1054. today's world

  1055. they were given

  1056. for Israel

  1057. in the ancient

  1058. world and it's

  1059. very interesting

  1060. scholars have

  1061. done this I

  1062. haven't done it

  1063. but I just read

  1064. some of the

  1065. things that

  1066. they've written

  1067. comparing

  1068. ancient law

  1069. codes with

  1070. other law

  1071. codes.

  1072. Sorry comparing

  1073. the Old

  1074. Testament law

  1075. code the

  1076. God given

  1077. law code with

  1078. other law

  1079. codes around

  1080. in the world

  1081. at the time

  1082. and it's

  1083. astonishing even

  1084. from our

  1085. perspective you

  1086. can see how

  1087. good they are

  1088. and even this

  1089. just looking at

  1090. a debt you

  1091. can say that's

  1092. that's not a

  1093. bad system is it

  1094. particularly in the

  1095. ancient world

  1096. where a lot of

  1097. things that have

  1098. developed now in

  1099. the modern world

  1100. hadn't developed

  1101. and some of the

  1102. things in the

  1103. modern world could

  1104. learn a thing or

  1105. two from God's

  1106. Old Testament law

  1107. not to adopt

  1108. the law directly

  1109. like that but to

  1110. learn in principle

  1111. how do you deal

  1112. with debt how do

  1113. you deal with

  1114. people in need

  1115. how do you and

  1116. to learn like

  1117. that now the

  1118. provisions of

  1119. God's law in

  1120. Israel as Israel

  1121. actually lived in

  1122. history so you've

  1123. got God's law

  1124. given in the days

  1125. of Moses and

  1126. then you've got

  1127. the history of

  1128. Israel that

  1129. followed well

  1130. pretty often and

  1131. indeed most of

  1132. the time God's

  1133. law was not

  1134. kept and again

  1135. and again it

  1136. was broken and

  1137. abused in Israel

  1138. leading to a

  1139. great deal of

  1140. hardship for

  1141. needy people

  1142. you only have to

  1143. read the books

  1144. of the prophets

  1145. the most famous

  1146. of them but most

  1147. of them will touch

  1148. on this is Amos

  1149. who has words to

  1150. say about a

  1151. society which has

  1152. disregarded about

  1153. Israel when they

  1154. had disregarded

  1155. God's law and

  1156. caused a great

  1157. deal of suffering

  1158. now we're in a

  1159. situation here in

  1160. this story where

  1161. this widow had

  1162. a creditor who

  1163. had lent money

  1164. presumably to her

  1165. husband and the

  1166. creditor was

  1167. exploiting the

  1168. situation to his

  1169. own advantage

  1170. he may have

  1171. seen himself as

  1172. within his legal

  1173. rights by you

  1174. know that kind of

  1175. selective reading

  1176. of the law

  1177. kind of thing we

  1178. often do with our

  1179. Bibles we read

  1180. the bits that we

  1181. really like and

  1182. that suit us but

  1183. if something is a

  1184. little bit challenging

  1185. we skip over that

  1186. bit well he may

  1187. have been that

  1188. kind of person in

  1189. terms of reading

  1190. God's law but he

  1191. he was taking no

  1192. account of the

  1193. changed circumstances

  1194. of this family no

  1195. account of the fact

  1196. that the husband and

  1197. father had died he

  1198. appears to be a

  1199. person who was

  1200. showing no mercy

  1201. towards the widow

  1202. and her children he

  1203. came the language of

  1204. verse 1 is quite

  1205. telling he came to

  1206. take he came to

  1207. take well Elisha

  1208. responded with two

  1209. questions the first

  1210. one verse 2 what

1211. shall I do for you

  1212. wouldn't that have

  1213. been nice to hear

  1214. for the widow to

  1215. hear see he signals

  1216. first to the poor

  1217. troubled widow he

  1218. he signals his

  1219. willingness to

  1220. help what can I

  1221. do for you

  1222. then he asks

  1223. another question

  1224. which is a little

  1225. bit more puzzling

  1226. tell me what have

  1227. you in your house

  1228. what do you got

  1229. what's in the

  1230. house

  1231. the answer was not

  1232. much

  1233. see Elisha drew

  1234. was drawing the

  1235. woman into what

  1236. he was about to

  1237. do for her

  1238. I think this is a

  1239. right thing to do

  1240. some of you might

  1241. want to challenge me

1242. on this but as I

  1243. read these Elisha

  1244. stories I keep

  1245. hearing echoes of

  1246. the gospel stories

  1247. and sort of say

  1248. how like do you

  1249. remember when Jesus

  1250. was confronted by

  1251. the needs of the

  1252. great crowd and

  1253. feeding the crowd

  1254. he said to the

  1255. disciples how many

  1256. loaves have you got

  1257. what have you got

  1258. it's sort of

  1259. drawing them in to

  1260. what he's about to

  1261. do and so

  1262. Elisha seems to

  1263. be doing something

  1264. similar and the

  1265. widow's reply

  1266. indicated her

  1267. utter inability to

  1268. satisfy this

  1269. creditor

  1270. see what she says

  1271. in verse 2

  1272. your servant has

  1273. nothing in the

  1274. house there's

  1275. nothing there we

  1276. haven't got a

  1277. thing except this

  1278. jar of oil

  1279. and the emphasis

  1280. in that sentence

  1281. is on the word

  1282. nothing

  1283. her jar of oil

  1284. almost certainly

  1285. was a little

  1286. flask I don't

  1287. know how big

  1288. but a little

  1289. flask of ointment

  1290. that would be

  1291. used for anointing

  1292. the body that

  1293. was probably all

  1294. it was all she

  1295. had all she had

  1296. was a little bit

  1297. of oil and

  1298. again it sort of

  1299. reminds me of the

  1300. response of the

  1301. disciples to Jesus

  1302. what do you got

  1303. five loaves and

  1304. two fish that's

  1305. all we got

  1306. that's all they

  1307. had that's all

  1308. she had

  1309. well Elisha

  1310. responded with

  1311. clear but very

  1312. strange instructions

  1313. verse 3 then he

  1314. said go outside

  1315. borrow vessels

  1316. from all your

  1317. neighbours

  1318. empty vessels

  1319. and not too

  1320. few

  1321. love that phrase

  1322. and then go

  1323. in and shut

  1324. the door behind

  1325. yourself and

  1326. your son and

  1327. behind yourself

  1328. and your sons

  1329. and pour into

  1330. all these

  1331. vessels and

  1332. when one is

  1333. full set it

  1334. aside so

  1335. first she's got

  1336. to go out and

  1337. ask her neighbours

  1338. for all the

  1339. empty containers

  1340. that could be

  1341. found not too

  1342. few suggests an

  1343. unusual effort

  1344. was to be made

  1345. collecting as

  1346. many vessels

  1347. as possible

  1348. you can't

  1349. imagine the

  1350. neighbours saying

  1351. what on earth

  1352. is she doing

  1353. what does she

  1354. want with all

  1355. these dishes

  1356. and bowls

  1357. and pots

  1358. and jugs

  1359. and basins

  1360. and flasks

  1361. and saucepans

  1362. and whatever

  1363. and second

  1364. well she's got

  1365. to collect all

  1366. those as many

  1367. as she can get

  1368. from her neighbours

  1369. and then she's

  1370. to go inside

  1371. with her sons

  1372. and all the

  1373. empty vessels

  1374. that she's

  1375. managed to

  1376. gather and

  1377. shut the

  1378. door

  1379. Elisha's not

  1380. going to be

  1381. directly involved

  1382. in what's

  1383. going to

  1384. happen

  1385. what was

  1386. about to

  1387. happen would

  1388. take some

  1389. time

  1390. and it was

  1391. not to be

  1392. a kind of

  1393. spectacle that

  1394. would attract

  1395. crowds and

  1396. onlookers

  1397. it would

  1398. happen behind

  1399. closed doors

  1400. quietly

  1401. and then third

  1402. what she was

  1403. to do behind

  1404. closed doors

  1405. was to pour

  1406. into these

  1407. vessels

  1408. the language

  1409. is concise

  1410. but one by

  1411. one presumably

  1412. the pouring

  1413. is from the

  1414. little flask

  1415. of oil

  1416. that's all

  1417. she had

  1418. that has

  1419. been mentioned

  1420. and Elisha's

  1421. instructions

  1422. implied that

  1423. the oil

  1424. would fill

  1425. vessel

  1426. after vessel

  1427. I've got to

  1428. admit that if I

  1429. try and imagine

  1430. myself in that

  1431. situation being

  1432. that poor

  1433. widow

  1434. I think

  1435. my reaction

  1436. would be

  1437. you've got to

  1438. be kidding

  1439. yeah

  1440. yeah

  1441. well the

  1442. astonishing

  1443. story now

  1444. unfolds quite

  1445. quickly

  1446. scene 2

  1447. begins with

  1448. the widow's

  1449. obedience

  1450. she doesn't

  1451. say you've

  1452. got to be

  1453. kidding

  1454. verse 5

  1455. says so

  1456. she went

  1457. from him

  1458. she went

  1459. to do

  1460. precisely

  1461. what the

  1462. prophet had

  1463. told her

  1464. to do

  1465. her efforts

  1466. going around

  1467. from all

  1468. the houses

  1469. round about

  1470. collecting as

  1471. many empty

  1472. vessels as

  1473. possible

  1474. that's passed

  1475. over without

  1476. a word

  1477. that's not

  1478. actually described

  1479. it's obvious

  1480. she did it

  1481. but it's not

  1482. described

  1483. it must have

  1484. taken some

  1485. time and

  1486. would have

  1487. been very

  1488. perplexing to

  1489. anyone who

  1490. was watching

  1491. this funny

  1492. little old

  1493. lady going

  1494. from house

  1495. to house

  1496. collecting all

  1497. the containers

  1498. that she could

  1499. we're taken

  1500. straight to the

  1501. moment that the

  1502. woman went

  1503. inside

  1504. verse 5

  1505. says and

  1506. she shut

  1507. the door

  1508. so all that's

  1509. happened

  1510. that's just

  1511. presumed to have

  1512. happened

  1513. shut the door

  1514. behind herself

  1515. and her sons

  1516. all the

  1517. containers are

  1518. there piled up

  1519. high

  1520. sort of

  1521. imagining them

  1522. in one of

  1523. her rooms

  1524. and her

  1525. sons are

  1526. with her

  1527. to help

  1528. and they

  1529. begin

  1530. perhaps they're

  1531. in the room

  1532. next door

  1533. and as she

  1534. poured

  1535. they brought

  1536. the vessels

  1537. to her

  1538. there's an

  1539. emphasis here

  1540. on the

  1541. activity of

  1542. the boys

  1543. and their

  1544. mother

  1545. the continuous

  1546. activity in

  1547. this room

  1548. they were

  1549. bringing

  1550. vessel

  1551. after

  1552. vessel

  1553. after

  1554. vessel

  1555. after

  1556. vessel

  1557. and she

  1558. was

  1559. pouring

  1560. and pouring

  1561. and pouring

  1562. and pouring

  1563. it went on

  1564. for some

  1565. time

  1566. until at last

  1567. the woman

  1568. was surrounded

  1569. trying to

  1570. imagine it

  1571. with containers

  1572. of various

  1573. shapes and

  1574. sizes

  1575. each one

  1576. full of

  1577. oil

  1578. and then she

  1579. said to one

  1580. of her sons

  1581. bring me

  1582. another vessel

  1583. and he

  1584. replied

  1585. there's none

  1586. left

  1587. and at

  1588. that moment

  1589. the oil

  1590. stopped

  1591. flowing

  1592. she said

  1593. oh

  1594. it's not

  1595. flowing anymore

  1596. there's none

  1597. left

  1598. now

  1599. just look

  1600. at all

  1601. that oil

  1602. it was

  1603. almost

  1604. certainly

  1605. in the

  1606. context

  1607. of the

  1608. time

  1609. this

  1610. would

  1611. have

  1612. been

  1613. olive

  1614. oil

  1615. normally

  1616. produced

  1617. by crushing

  1618. olives

  1619. with a

  1620. mortar

  1621. or in

  1622. a rock

  1623. press

  1624. sometimes

  1625. it was

  1626. produced

  1627. by treading

  1628. them like

  1629. grapes

  1630. in a

  1631. wine

  1632. press

  1633. oil

  1634. was

  1635. used

  1636. with a

  1637. number

  1638. of uses

  1639. it

  1640. included

  1641. cooking

  1642. anointing

  1643. the skin

  1644. just

  1645. treating

  1646. your dry

  1647. skin

  1648. to make

  1649. it

  1650. nice

  1651. and

  1652. smooth

  1653. particularly

  1654. the head

  1655. and the

  1656. face

  1657. were

  1658. often

  1659. rubbed

  1660. with this

  1661. kind of

  1662. oil

  1663. it was

  1664. used

  1665. as a

  1666. fuel

  1667. in

  1668. lamps

  1669. and it

  1670. was

  1671. sometimes

  1672. used

  1673. for

  1674. soothing

  1675. wounds

  1676. if you

  1677. had a

  1678. scratch

  1679. or a

  1680. cut

  1681. the oil

  1682. would

  1683. soothe

  1684. the

  1685. pain

  1686. and I

  1687. suppose

  1688. stop the

  1689. exposure

  1690. to the

  1691. air

  1692. I suppose

  1693. that was

  1694. happening

  1695. so oil

  1696. was a

  1697. useful

  1698. commodity

  1699. but generally

  1700. speaking in

  1701. relatively small

  1702. amounts

  1703. that's why

  1704. I presume

  1705. the woman

  1706. just had

  1707. this little

  1708. jar in

  1709. the house

  1710. nobody

  1711. had a

  1712. large

  1713. amount

  1714. of it

  1715. and this

  1716. abundant

  1717. supply

  1718. of oil

  1719. filling

  1720. many

  1721. vessels

  1722. in the

  1723. widow's

  1724. house

  1725. obviously

  1726. produced

  1727. obviously

  1728. produced

  1729. by

  1730. as the

  1731. woman

  1732. and her

  1733. sons

  1734. could see

  1735. nobody else

  1736. knew at this

  1737. stage but

  1738. a remarkable

  1739. act of

  1740. God

  1741. but is it

  1742. not

  1743. an extraordinary

  1744. testimony

  1745. to God's

  1746. abundant

  1747. kindness

  1748. here's God's

  1749. goodness

  1750. on display

  1751. this is what

  1752. God's power

  1753. does

  1754. it

  1755. it magnifies

  1756. his goodness

  1757. it's not

  1758. just

  1759. power

  1760. it's

  1761. power

  1762. of one

  1763. who is

  1764. infinitely

  1765. good

  1766. and here

  1767. you see

  1768. it

  1769. it's small

  1770. it's insignificant

  1771. hardly

  1772. worth writing

  1773. in the history

  1774. book

  1775. we don't even

  1776. know the

  1777. woman's name

  1778. no

  1779. this was a

  1780. display

  1781. of the

  1782. goodness

  1783. of God

  1784. magnified

  1785. by his

  1786. power

  1787. and it

  1788. really is

  1789. worth

  1790. remembering

  1791. and so

  1792. it's

  1793. recorded

  1794. but of

  1795. course the

  1796. question does

  1797. arise what

  1798. is she

  1799. going to

  1800. do with

  1801. all this

  1802. oil

  1803. and I

  1804. think she

  1805. might have

  1806. been wondering

  1807. the same

  1808. thing

  1809. in scene

  1810. three we

  1811. follow her

  1812. out of the

  1813. house again

  1814. as she

  1815. returned to

  1816. Elisha

  1817. verse seven

  1818. she came

  1819. out and she

  1820. told the

  1821. man of

  1822. God that

  1823. is she

  1824. reported

  1825. everything

  1826. that had

  1827. happened

  1828. to Elisha

  1829. but just

  1830. notice by the

  1831. way and I

  1832. hope you don't

  1833. mind us

  1834. reading as

  1835. slowly as

  1836. we're

  1837. reading I

  1838. love the

  1839. details the

  1840. details are

  1841. brilliant I

  1842. think this

  1843. is the first

  1844. time that

  1845. Elisha is

  1846. called man

  1847. of God

  1848. the man

  1849. of God

  1850. it won't

  1851. be the

  1852. last

  1853. indeed in

  1854. the Old

  1855. Testament

  1856. Elisha is

  1857. called man

  1858. of God

  1859. more than

  1860. anyone else

  1861. but man

  1862. of God

  1863. is a very

  1864. weighty

  1865. expression

  1866. it doesn't

  1867. just mean

  1868. oh he was

  1869. a godly

  1870. man he was

  1871. a man of

  1872. God we use

  1873. that phrase a

  1874. little bit

  1875. sometimes don't

  1876. we when we

  1877. describe someone

  1878. a man of

  1879. God I don't

  1880. think we use

  1881. it very much

  1882. these days but

  1883. I think the

  1884. general sense

  1885. of it a

  1886. godly person

  1887. a person of

  1888. true faith in

  1889. God now it's

  1890. more than that

  1891. man of God

  1892. in the way in

  1893. which it's used

  1894. in the Old

  1895. Testament means

  1896. a man from

  1897. God

  1898. right a man

  1899. who speaks

  1900. and acts

  1901. for God

  1902. a man of

  1903. God

  1904. is a very

  1905. weighty

  1906. expression

  1907. well she

  1908. came to

  1909. the man

  1910. of God

  1911. she doesn't

  1912. just come to

  1913. Elisha

  1914. she came to

  1915. the man

  1916. of God

  1917. and Elisha

  1918. brings this

  1919. episode to a

  1920. close by

  1921. spelling out

  1922. the consequences

  1923. of what had

  1924. happened

  1925. he said

  1926. verse 7

  1927. again

  1928. go

  1929. sell the

  1930. oil

  1931. oh that's

  1932. a good

  1933. idea

  1934. and pay

  1935. your debts

  1936. and you

  1937. and your

  1938. sons can

  1939. live on

  1940. the rest

  1941. so for the

  1942. reasons that I

  1943. outlined a

  1944. moment ago

  1945. oil was a

  1946. tradable

  1947. commodity

  1948. and its

  1949. usefulness in

  1950. small quantities

  1951. suggests that

  1952. the vast

  1953. quantity that

  1954. the woman

  1955. now had

  1956. access to

  1957. would have

  1958. had considerable

  1959. value

  1960. people were

  1961. happy to have

  1962. oil in small

  1963. quantities

  1964. and pay for

  1965. it

  1966. well what

  1967. she had

  1968. would have

  1969. had very

  1970. significant

  1971. value

  1972. you see the

  1973. Lord had

  1974. provided

  1975. and his

  1976. provision

  1977. enabled the

  1978. woman now

  1979. to be free

  1980. both from

  1981. debt

  1982. and poverty

  1983. the Lord's

  1984. provision was

  1985. not small

  1986. not a few

  1987. containers

  1988. not

  1989. trivial

  1990. people

  1991. the Lord's

  1992. provision

  1993. well I

  1994. think it's a

  1995. wonderful little

  1996. story

  1997. and there are

  1998. many like it

  1999. in the pages

  2000. that follow

  2001. but let's

  2002. think as we

  2003. close about

  2004. what this

  2005. story teaches

  2006. us

  2007. and the first

  2008. thing I think

  2009. we should notice

  2010. is that

  2011. like the

  2012. accounts of

  2013. Jesus dealing

  2014. with vulnerable

  2015. suffering people

  2016. the response

  2017. of Elisha

  2018. the response

  2019. of the man

  2020. of God

  2021. whose name

  2022. means

  2023. my God

  2024. saves

  2025. Elisha's

  2026. response to

  2027. the widow

  2028. is a wonderful

  2029. demonstration of

  2030. the extravagant

  2031. kindness of God

  2032. friends I want us

  2033. just to reflect on

  2034. the fact you read

  2035. this story

  2036. please understand

  2037. this is what

  2038. God is like

  2039. do you ever

  2040. feel like a

  2041. nobody

  2042. let you in on

  2043. a secret

  2044. most people

  2045. do

  2046. and it's not a

  2047. bad thing to

  2048. feel you know

  2049. if you strut

  2050. around through

  2051. life thinking

  2052. you're a

  2053. somebody

  2054. tell you one

  2055. thing you

  2056. probably won't

  2057. have many

  2058. friends

  2059. people don't

  2060. like people

  2061. very much

  2062. who think

  2063. that they're

  2064. somebody

  2065. it's not a

  2066. bad thing

  2067. in itself

  2068. to think of

  2069. yourself as a

  2070. nobody

  2071. and it's

  2072. particularly

  2073. good

  2074. to think of

  2075. yourself as a

  2076. nobody

  2077. when you know

  2078. what God

  2079. is like

  2080. he cares

  2081. about nobodies

  2082. that's what

  2083. God is like

  2084. see whatever

  2085. you think of

  2086. yourself

  2087. here this

  2088. morning

  2089. however you

  2090. think of

  2091. yourself

  2092. you know

  2093. most of

  2094. us have

  2095. some sort

  2096. of striving

  2097. to be

  2098. significant

  2099. to do

  2100. something

  2101. significant

  2102. a whole

  2103. lot of

  2104. our world

  2105. today is

  2106. messed up

  2107. because people

  2108. are competing

  2109. to be

  2110. significant

  2111. to do

  2112. significant

  2113. things

  2114. to gain

  2115. some kind

  2116. of status

  2117. and to

  2118. find

  2119. you know

  2120. it doesn't

  2121. work

  2122. there's

  2123. lots of

  2124. good

  2125. things for

  2126. us to

  2127. do in

  2128. the world

  2129. I'm not

  2130. against

  2131. people doing

  2132. significant

  2133. things or

  2134. anything like

  2135. that but

  2136. that's not

  2137. how you find

  2138. your significance

  2139. you're like

  2140. me you're a

  2141. nobody

  2142. you really

  2143. are a

  2144. nobody

  2145. in the

  2146. scheme of

  2147. things I

  2148. mean you're

  2149. one person

  2150. you know how

  2151. many millions

  2152. there are in

  2153. the world

  2154. and you're

  2155. just one

  2156. I'm just

  2157. one

  2158. you find

  2159. your

  2160. significance

  2161. by discovering

  2162. the wonderful

  2163. truth of

  2164. what God

  2165. is like

  2166. and God

  2167. is the

  2168. God

  2169. who is

  2170. kind

  2171. to

  2172. nobodies

  2173. that's a

  2174. wonderful

  2175. story isn't

  2176. it I

  2177. mean if

  2178. you stop

  2179. there it

  2180. would be

  2181. worth reading

  2182. the story

  2183. wouldn't it

  2184. just saying

  2185. you know

  2186. there are

  2187. senses in

  2188. which I'm

  2189. just like

  2190. that widow

  2191. I really

  2192. am

  2193. I haven't

  2194. got much

  2195. I got

  2196. more than

  2197. she has

  2198. but I

  2199. could lose

  2200. it tomorrow

  2201. yeah

  2202. what God

  2203. is like

  2204. in our

  2205. weaknesses

  2206. and in

  2207. our inadequacies

  2208. and in

  2209. our hardships

  2210. and when we

  2211. find

  2212. actually I'm

  2213. finding it

  2214. really hard

  2215. to cope

  2216. I think it's

  2217. not a bad

  2218. idea to say

  2219. I'm like

  2220. that widow

  2221. and I want

  2222. to be reminded

  2223. as I read

  2224. the story

  2225. of that

  2226. widow

  2227. of the

  2228. powerful

  2229. kindness

  2230. of God

  2231. the New

  2232. Testament

  2233. puts it

  2234. like this

  2235. he cares

  2236. for you

  2237. do you

  2238. hear that

  2239. that's what

  2240. God is

  2241. like

  2242. I don't

  2243. know whether

  2244. this is getting

  2245. through to you

  2246. but I

  2247. find it

  2248. deeply

  2249. moving

  2250. to learn

  2251. that that

  2252. is what

  2253. God

  2254. is like

  2255. he cares

  2256. for you

  2257. and he

  2258. invites us

  2259. to be

  2260. like that

  2261. widow

  2262. and to

  2263. cast all

  2264. our anxieties

  2265. on him

  2266. because

  2267. he cares

  2268. for you

  2269. let's

  2270. take it a

  2271. little bit

  2272. further

  2273. because the

  2274. widow's

  2275. experience

  2276. is a

  2277. wonderful

  2278. picture

  2279. of what

  2280. can be

  2281. our

  2282. experience

  2283. and I'm

  2284. just going to

  2285. take the

  2286. words of

  2287. Philippians

    Philippians 4:6

  2288. chapter 4

  2289. verses 6

  2290. and 7

  2291. just listen

  2292. to this

  2293. do not

  2294. be

  2295. and as

  2296. you listen

  2297. to this

  2298. see how

  2299. they sort

  2300. of fit

  2301. what the

  2302. widow did

  2303. and see

  2304. how they

  2305. then

  2306. directly

  2307. are a

  2308. call to

  2309. us

  2310. the words

  2311. are these

  2312. Philippians

    Philippians 4:6

  2313. 4

  2314. verses 6

  2315. and 7

  2316. do not

  2317. be

  2318. anxious

  2319. about

  2320. anything

  2321. but in

  2322. everything

  2323. by prayer

  2324. and supplication

  2325. with thanksgiving

  2326. let your

  2327. requests be

  2328. made known

  2329. to God

  2330. to what

  2331. the widow

  2332. did didn't

  2333. she

  2334. by coming

  2335. to Elisha

  2336. let your

  2337. requests

  2338. be made

  2339. known to

  2340. God

  2341. whatever's

  2342. on your

  2343. heart

  2344. whatever

  2345. your anxieties

  2346. about life

  2347. are

  2348. whatever

  2349. your

  2350. yeah

  2351. whatever

  2352. you're going

  2353. through

  2354. let your

  2355. requests

  2356. be made

  2357. known to

  2358. God

  2359. and here's

  2360. the promise

  2361. and the

  2362. peace of

  2363. God

  2364. which

  2365. surpasses

  2366. all

  2367. understanding

  2368. will guard

  2369. your hearts

  2370. and your

  2371. minds

  2372. in Christ

  2373. Jesus

  2374. what God

  2375. is like

  2376. he cares

  2377. for you

  2378. well then

  2379. notice that the

  2380. story of the

  2381. widow also

  2382. presents us

  2383. with a model

  2384. of discipleship

  2385. so it shows us

  2386. what God

  2387. is like

  2388. it also

  2389. shows us

  2390. what a

  2391. disciple

  2392. is like

  2393. she saw

  2394. herself

  2395. like her

  2396. husband

  2397. as a

  2398. servant

  2399. of the

  2400. man of

  2401. God

  2402. no doubt

  2403. she like

  2404. her husband

  2405. feared the

  2406. Lord

  2407. she brought

  2408. her need

  2409. to the man

  2410. of God

  2411. and she

  2412. listened to

  2413. his word

  2414. she trusted

  2415. him

  2416. and she

  2417. obeyed

  2418. him

  2419. and she

  2420. received

  2421. more

  2422. than she

  2423. asked

  2424. for

  2425. now if

  2426. you're a

  2427. Christian

  2428. believer

  2429. this morning

  2430. as I

  2431. know

  2432. many of

  2433. us here

  2434. are

  2435. and if

  2436. you're not

  2437. yet

  2438. a Christian

  2439. believer

  2440. this morning

  2441. listen to

  2442. this because

  2443. this is what

  2444. a Christian

  2445. believer

  2446. is

  2447. and if

  2448. I could

  2449. talk with

  2450. you and

  2451. I'd be

  2452. very happy

  2453. to do

  2454. so I'd

  2455. want to

  2456. know why

  2457. on earth

  2458. aren't

  2459. you

  2460. why

  2461. wouldn't

  2462. you be

  2463. why

  2464. wouldn't

  2465. you trust

  2466. this God

  2467. what are

  2468. you mucking

  2469. around for

  2470. what are

  2471. you waiting

  2472. for

  2473. what do

  2474. you want

  2475. him to

  2476. do

  2477. watch this

  2478. woman

  2479. closely

  2480. and I

  2481. want to

  2482. say

  2483. we follow

  2484. her example

  2485. and just

  2486. as she

  2487. found

  2488. the Lord's

  2489. provision

  2490. surpassed

  2491. anything

  2492. she could

  2493. possibly

  2494. have

  2495. hoped

  2496. for

  2497. so you

  2498. will

  2499. find

  2500. as you

  2501. come

  2502. to the

  2503. Lord

  2504. Jesus

  2505. the one

  2506. who is

  2507. greater

  2508. than

  2509. Elisha

  2510. come to

  2511. the Lord

  2512. Jesus

  2513. listen to

  2514. his word

  2515. trust

  2516. him

  2517. and obey

  2518. him

  2519. and you

  2520. will find

  2521. as the

  2522. New Testament

  2523. puts it

  2524. that he

  2525. is able

  2526. to do

  2527. far more

  2528. abundantly

  2529. than all

  2530. that we

  2531. ask or

  2532. think

  2533. according to

  2534. the power

  2535. at work

  2536. within us

  2537. we're moving

  2538. from an

  2539. Old Testament

  2540. story to

  2541. the experience

  2542. of Christian

  2543. believers

  2544. it's a big

  2545. jump

  2546. but it's an

  2547. appropriate

  2548. movement

  2549. but it is a

  2550. movement

  2551. we are

  2552. living on

  2553. this side

  2554. of the

  2555. death and

  2556. the

  2557. resurrection

  2558. of Jesus

  2559. we live

  2560. in the

  2561. light of

  2562. the death

  2563. and the

  2564. resurrection

  2565. of Jesus

  2566. and we

  2567. must understand

  2568. that the

  2569. fulfilment

  2570. surpasses

  2571. the shadow

  2572. and our

  2573. Old Testament

  2574. stories are

  2575. shadows of

  2576. the fulfilment

  2577. in which we

  2578. now live

  2579. the widow's

  2580. request for

  2581. help in

  2582. her desperate

  2583. plight

  2584. and the

  2585. Lord's

  2586. overflowing

  2587. provision

  2588. for her

  2589. is but a

  2590. shadow

  2591. of the

  2592. request that

  2593. the Apostle

  2594. Paul had

  2595. in mind

  2596. when he

  2597. thought of

  2598. far more

  2599. abundantly

  2600. I want to

  2601. close by

  2602. asking you to

  2603. listen carefully

  2604. to Paul's

  2605. prayer to

  2606. the God

  2607. who provided

  2608. so abundantly

  2609. for that

  2610. widow

  2611. he prayed

  2612. like this

  2613. for people

  2614. like us

  2615. that according

  2616. to the

  2617. riches of

  2618. his glory

  2619. he may

  2620. grant you

  2621. to be

  2622. strengthened

  2623. with power

  2624. through his

  2625. spirit in

  2626. your inner

  2627. being

  2628. so that

  2629. Christ may

  2630. dwell in

  2631. your hearts

  2632. through

  2633. faith

  2634. and that

  2635. you

  2636. being

  2637. rooted

  2638. and grounded

  2639. in love

  2640. may have

  2641. strength

  2642. to comprehend

  2643. with all

  2644. the saints

  2645. all the

  2646. Christians

  2647. what is

  2648. the breadth

  2649. and the

  2650. length

  2651. and the

  2652. height

  2653. and the

  2654. depth

  2655. and to

  2656. know

  2657. the love

  2658. of Christ

  2659. that surpasses

  2660. knowledge

  2661. that you

  2662. may be

  2663. filled

  2664. with the

  2665. fullness

  2666. of God

  2667. I'm blown

  2668. away by

  2669. this story

  2670. what a

  2671. God

  2672. we share

  2673. with the

  2674. widow of

  2675. our story

  2676. with

  2677. blessings

  2678. bigger

  2679. better

  2680. and longer

  2681. lasting

  2682. than her

  2683. gallons and

  2684. gallons of

  2685. oil

  2686. will you pray

  2687. with me

  2688. our heavenly

  2689. father we thank you

  2690. for this poor

  2691. lady so long

  2692. ago

  2693. in her grief

  2694. and in her

  2695. fear

  2696. and in her

  2697. anxiety for

  2698. her kids

  2699. in a

  2700. situation

  2701. where she

  2702. was being

  2703. exploited

  2704. and bullied

  2705. thank you so

  2706. much for the

  2707. way in which

  2708. you responded

  2709. to that need

  2710. as she brought

  2711. it to the

  2712. man of

  2713. God

  2714. what a

  2715. picture that

  2716. is

  2717. and help

  2718. us to see

  2719. ourselves

  2720. and how

  2721. much we

  2722. are like

  2723. her

  2724. in our

  2725. need

  2726. in our

  2727. inability

  2728. really

  2729. to cope

  2730. our

  2731. inability

  2732. to control

  2733. our

  2734. circumstances

  2735. our

  2736. insignificance

  2737. our

  2738. nobodiness

  2739. we pray

  2740. heavenly

  2741. father that

  2742. every

  2743. each one

  2744. of us

  2745. this

  2746. morning

  2747. be able

  2748. to turn

  2749. to the

  2750. man of

  2751. God

  2752. the Lord

  2753. Jesus

  2754. and bring

  2755. our anxieties

  2756. to him

  2757. and experience

  2758. the wonder

  2759. of your

  2760. promises to

  2761. us

  2762. fulfilled

  2763. and I

  2764. want to

  2765. pray

  2766. now for

  2767. any one

  2768. of us

  2769. and there

  2770. may be

  2771. just one

  2772. who has

  2773. not yet

  2774. turned to

  2775. Jesus in

  2776. that way

  2777. ever

  2778. I want to

  2779. pray that

  2780. that person

  2781. or those

  2782. persons

  2783. might do

  2784. that today

  2785. what could

  2786. they possibly

  2787. be waiting

  2788. for

  2789. we pray

  2790. this in

  2791. Jesus name

  2792. Amen
