  1. Well, we're about to hear the story, the first-hand account of what happened.

  2. So will you please let me say just a few words to get us thinking before we hear the story.

  3. This COVID crisis we're in, I think it's forced us all to re-evaluate what's essential in our lives.

  4. You're probably sick of that word essential, but I think it's making us all ask that question.

  5. What is absolutely necessary for my life?

  6. When this was all starting, I went to Audi one night, and I didn't care too much that I couldn't get the vegetables I was after, but there was no coffee.

  7. So I ordered some online.

  8. I don't know why I looked up then.

  9. I suppose God does provide all things, but I ordered some online.

  10. And as I excitedly opened the delivery, I was wondering if coffee was just a bit too essential for my own happiness.

  11. When this card fell out of the package.

  12. Could have been an answer.

  13. I'm not sure.

  14. But the coffee was delicious.

  15. And that's the main point.

  16. We're all asking this question.

  17. What is essential at a public level?

  18. What are essential services that remain open?

  19. What are essential reasons that we're allowed to leave the house like exercise and acts of compassion?

  20. But I reckon we're asking this question at a deeper level than this.

  21. I think we're asking the question.

  22. What is essential for our home life?

  23. What's essential for our relationships being sustained and growing through this time?

  24. If we can't be in each other's presence, can't shake hands and hug, how do we express our connection?

  25. Being forced to isolate.

  26. I wonder if you're like me and you're just growing in your appreciation for how connection is just so close to the heart of what gives us life.

  27. So we're all asking this question.

  28. What's essential for life?

  29. The story we're about to hear gives a surprising answer to our question.

  30. What's absolutely essential for my life is that another man died.

  31. Jesus died to give us connection with God and connection with one another.

  32. So what we're going to do now is we're going to hear this story.

  33. Simon will read what happened and I will point out a few things in the story as we go.

  34. And as I said, we're going to cross each time.

  35. We're going to hear the story in four parts.

  36. And after each part, we'll hear from four people and how this story has changed and is changing their lives.

  37. So I hope you're looking forward to this.

  38. I invite you to listen and to reflect.

  39. We pick up the story with Jesus having claimed that he is God's only son, the good shepherd who will lay down his life for his sheep.

  40. He's been betrayed by his closest friends, arrested by his own Jewish people, those who should have recognized him.

  41. And he's now been handed over to the Roman governor, Pilate.

  42. So over to you, Simon, to read part one of the story.

  43. Okay.

  44. Okay.

  45. John chapter 19.

    John 19 chapter mention

  46. Pilate took Jesus and flogged him.

  47. And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe.

  48. They came up to him saying, hail, king of the Jews and struck him with their hands.

  49. Pilate went out again and said to them, see, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in him.

  50. So Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe.

  51. Pilate said to them, behold the man.

  52. When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, crucify him, crucify him.

  53. Pilate said to them, take him yourselves and crucify him.

  54. For I find no guilt in him.

  55. The Jews answered him, we have a law.

  56. And according to that law, he ought to die because he has made himself the son of God.

  57. When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid.

  58. He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, where are you from?

  59. But Jesus gave him no answer.

  60. So Pilate said to him, you will not speak to me.

  61. Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?

  62. Jesus answered him.

  63. You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above.

  64. Therefore, he who delivered me over to you has the greatest sin.

  65. From then on, Pilate sought to release him.

  66. But the Jews cried out, if you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend.

  67. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.

  68. So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called the stone pavement and in Aramaic, Gabbatha.

  69. Now, it was the day of preparation of the Passover.

  70. It was about the sixth hour.

  71. He said to the Jews, behold your king.

  72. And they cried out, away with him, away with him, crucify him.

  73. Pilate said to them, shall I crucify your king?

  74. The chief priests answered, we have no king but Caesar.

  75. So he delivered him over to them to be crucified.

  76. So he delivered him over to them to be crucified.

  77. It was a very dangerous thing to claim to be a king and so stir people up to go against the authority of Rome.

  78. That's a quick and sure way to be crucified.

  79. That's the kind of thing that Pilate, the governor representing Caesar, was to squash without mercy or hesitation.

  80. But that's why it's really surprising that three times Pilate says in different ways, I find no guilt in him.

  81. To try and satisfy the murderous cries of the Jewish authorities, he has Jesus beaten so that he can then release him.

  82. Jesus is mocked, dressed in royal purple, which is the best colour by the way, and given a crown of thorns dug into his head,

  83. each soldier bowing before him, hail King of the Jews, and striking him.

  84. But it's not enough.

  85. Only death would satisfy Jesus' own Jewish people.

  86. And only a public death, discrediting once and for all, all his claims to be God's son.

  87. To be killed and hung on a tree was a sure sign of God's rejection of a person.

  88. The Jews won't be satisfied with anything less.

  89. Pilate didn't care so much that Jesus was innocent.

  90. But he did care that the Jewish authorities were manipulating him to do their will.

  91. And they knew they had the upper hand.

  92. What would Caesar do if he heard Pilate didn't crucify someone claiming to be the king?

  93. Pilate didn't crucify someone claiming to be the king?

  94. So easily.

  95. But Jesus was silent.

  96. Pilate hands Jesus over to be crucified.

  97. But not without putting the Jews in their place first.

  98. Okay, then, have what you want.

  99. This is the only king you Jews will ever have.

  100. So now watch him be crushed by the power of Rome.

  101. Behold your king.

  102. Pilate and the soldiers who beat him had no idea how true their words were.

  103. Pilate and the soldiers who beat him had no idea how true their words were.

  104. Friends, behold your king.

  105. Innocent yet punished.

  106. Accused yet silent.

  107. Having all authority yet submitting to death.

  108. chosen by God yet rejected by the world

  109. the question we're left with until the next part of the story is why

  110. why would he endure this but before we hear the next part we're going to first

  111. cross to Catherine and she's going to share how Jesus

  112. has really impacted her life so thank you Catherine

  113. okay

  114. when I was listening to this story

  115. to this reading one of the things that really struck me

  116. was how unjustly Jesus was accused and that he didn't do anything

  117. and I know for me that this was particularly

  118. striking because I really really really hate being unjustly accused and I not only don't want to

  119. I always want to be right but I always want to be seen to be right as well and if I am unjustly accused

  120. particularly by those closest to me particularly in marriage and at home the wheels fall off I react to really

  121. intensely massively defensive massively aggressive and lash out in a really destructive way

  122. and when I think about Jesus at this time

  123. he of all people not only has the right of being able to say I am right guys but also he has the power to be able to blitz these guys and smash them to smithereens

  124. and he doesn't he is silent when accused and he is calm when he responds he responds in a moderated calm way saying you only get this authority because God's given you this authority

  125. and it keeps reminding me that I have far less right to be seen as seen as right and in fact it doesn't matter

  126. it doesn't matter if those who are with me can see that I'm good or bad God knows

  127. that the heart stuff and it gives me a chance to step back and go all right how am I going to respond am I going to respond in a way that is

  128. unpleasing to God hitting out at everybody around me or am I going to respond

  129. slowly kindly compassionately with patience looking at myself and seeing where the fault is

  130. so um I've been 40 years a Christian I can see how much I've changed in that 40 years

  131. um particularly under great trials and stress um I can see where I've uh not been what I've wanted to be

  132. but where over time things are changing and I hope that things will continue to change in fact I know that things will continue to change

  133. um God is working at me and he is really making a difference

  134. thanks Catherine we're going to pick up now um midway verse through verse 16 and continue our reading

  135. so they took Jesus and he went out bearing his own cross to the place called the place of the skull

  136. which in Aramaic is called Golgotha there they crucified him and with him two others one on either side

  137. and Jesus between them

  138. Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross

  139. it read

  140. Jesus of Nazareth

  141. the king of the Jews

  142. many of the Jews read this inscription

  143. for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city

  144. and it was written in Aramaic

  145. in Latin

  146. and in Greek

  147. so the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate

  148. do not write the king of the Jews

  149. but rather

  150. this man said I am king of the Jews

  151. Pilate answered

  152. what I have written

  153. I have written

  154. when the soldiers had crucified Jesus

  155. they took his garments and divided them into four parts

  156. one part for each soldier

  157. also his tunic

  158. but the tunic was seamless

  159. woven in one piece from top to bottom

  160. so they said to one another

  161. let us not tear it

  162. but cast lots for it

  163. to see whose it shall be

  164. this was to fulfill the scripture

  165. which says

  166. they divided my garments among them

  167. and for my clothing they cast lots

  168. so the soldiers did these things

  169. but standing by the cross of Jesus

  170. were his mother

  171. and his mother's sister

  172. Mary the wife of Clopas

  173. and Mary Magdalene

  174. when Jesus saw his mother

  175. and the disciple whom he loved

  176. standing nearby

  177. he said to his mother

  178. woman

  179. behold

  180. your son

  181. then he said to the disciple

  182. behold

  183. your mother

  184. and from that hour

  185. the disciple took her to his own home

  186. after this

  187. Jesus knowing that all was now finished

  188. said

  189. to fulfill the scripture

  190. I thirst

  191. a jar full of sour wine stood there

  192. so they put a sponge full of the sour wine

  193. on a hyssop branch

  194. and held it to his mouth

  195. when Jesus had received the sour wine

  196. he said

  197. it is finished

  198. and he bowed his head

  199. and gave up his spirit

  200. Roman practice was to

  201. whip criminals before they are crucified

  202. with whips that have bits of bone and metal

  203. tearing at the flesh

  204. a crucified victim was stripped naked

  205. publicly put to shame

  206. with their crime displayed

  207. for all the world to see

  208. the victim is nailed

  209. through their hands

  210. or wrists

  211. and they are left there

  212. in the hot sun

  213. for hours

  214. sometimes days

  215. until eventually

  216. the victim is too tired

  217. to hold up their body weight

  218. to allow air into their lungs

  219. and they suffocate

  220. but the agony of Jesus

  221. isn't the focus

  222. in the story

  223. instead our attention

  224. is drawn

  225. to the soldiers

  226. gambling

  227. for Jesus' clothing

  228. unknowingly

  229. these executioners

  230. are acting

  231. to God's script

  232. written in Psalm 22

  233. a thousand years earlier

  234. they divide my garments

  235. among them

  236. and for my clothing

  237. they cast lots

  238. Jesus knew

  239. that his mission

  240. was almost complete

  241. so he cries out

  242. in thirst

  243. as God's word

  244. said it would happen

  245. and drinking sour wine

  246. clothes

  247. and drinking sour wine

  248. they just seem like

  249. random things

  250. to focus on

  251. don't they

  252. but there was nothing

  253. random going on

  254. and Jesus knew it

  255. and that's the point

  256. Jesus was fully aware

  257. that every step

  258. leading to his

  259. impending death

  260. was the design

  261. of his heavenly father

  262. and he obeyed

  263. every step

  264. of the way

  265. his last words

  266. are not words

  267. of a victim

  268. but words of triumph

  269. it is finished

  270. my mission

  271. is complete

  272. and he bows

  273. his head

  274. freely

  275. giving up

  276. his spirit

  277. no one

  278. took his life

  279. from him

  280. not Pilate

  281. not the Jews

  282. they're arguing

  283. over the crime

  284. written above him

  285. the king

  286. of the Jews

  287. which is written

  288. in three languages

  289. for all the Roman world

  290. to read

  291. and understand

  292. as Pilate

  293. and the Jews

  294. fight for authority

  295. over the situation

  296. unknowingly

  297. God is using them

  298. to declare

  299. to the whole world

  300. that Jesus

  301. is

  302. God's

  303. king

  304. this is

  305. the father's plan

  306. for our king

  307. to die

  308. and our king

  309. was obedient

  310. to his father

  311. until his last breath

  312. it

  313. is

  314. finished

  315. we're going

  316. to hear now

  317. from Gareth

  318. who will share

  319. how he's come

  320. to rest

  321. in God's

  322. unexpected plan

  323. so thanks Gareth

  324. good morning all

  325. going back to my late teens

  326. I believe the real life

  327. was random

  328. that is

  329. I stopped believing

  330. that there was a God

  331. and I believed

  332. that

  333. the world

  334. came into being

  335. randomly

  336. by Big Bang

  337. or some other such thing

  338. when I really thought

  339. on that

  340. it terrified me

  341. because I recognised

  342. how short life is

  343. and that through

  344. that lens

  345. how utterly meaningless

  346. that terror

  347. stayed with me

  348. for quite some time

  349. until I could stand it

  350. no more

  351. and ask my father

  352. rather a lot of questions

  353. about his belief

  354. in God

  355. my memory of that

  356. conversation is very vague

  357. I remember thinking

  358. that dad's belief

  359. wasn't so silly

  360. after all

  361. I think he prayed

  362. at the end

  363. and I remember

  364. that I felt

  365. as if a massive burden

  366. had been removed

  367. from my shoulders

  368. much like that of

  369. Pilgrim

  370. in Pilgrim's Progress

  371. these days

  372. I look through

  373. a different lens

  374. I look at life

  375. through God's word

  376. the Bible

  377. and life makes

  378. a lot more sense

  379. and it has meaning

  380. the psalmist

  381. in Psalm 31

  382. says

  383. I trust in you

  384. oh Lord

  385. I say

  386. you are my God

  387. my times

  388. are in your hand

  389. I believe

  390. that I too

  391. can trust in God

  392. and that my times

  393. are in his hand

  394. 15 years ago

  395. I was really unhappy

  396. with the job

  397. I was in

  398. I was starting

  399. early in the morning

  400. and finishing late

  401. not even able

  402. to attend

  403. an evening Bible study

  404. at the new church

  405. we were now attending

  406. so I prayed

  407. Lord please help me

  408. with this

  409. not too long

  410. after that

  411. I was called

  412. into the boss's office

  413. and made redundant

  414. we're letting you go

  415. he said

  416. like I was

  417. some sort of fish

  418. I said very little

  419. but felt quite

  420. indignant about it

  421. how dare they

  422. I thought

  423. then I remembered

  424. my prayer

  425. and could see

  426. that God was in it

  427. and gave thanks

  428. even though

  429. it was

  430. unnerving

  431. to say the least

  432. within two weeks

  433. I received a phone call

  434. from someone

  435. saying that they had heard

  436. that I may be looking

  437. for work

  438. and would I consider

  439. working for them

  440. I said I would consider it

  441. and have been working

  442. for them ever since

  443. God had a more

  444. appropriate job

  445. for me

  446. with regular hours

  447. I know that I can

  448. really trust in God

  449. and my time

  450. really is in his hand

  451. because of Jesus Christ

  452. and what he did

  453. on the cross

  454. my life has meaning

  455. and hope

  456. thanks Gareth

  457. we'll continue our reading

  458. from verse 31

  459. since it was the day

  460. of preparation

  461. and so that the bodies

  462. would not remain

  463. on the cross

  464. on the Sabbath

  465. for that Sabbath

  466. was a high day

  467. the Jews asked

  468. Pilate that their legs

  469. might be broken

  470. and that they might

  471. be taken away

  472. so the soldiers

  473. came

  474. and broke the legs

  475. of the first

  476. and of the other

  477. who had been crucified

  478. with him

  479. but when they came

  480. to Jesus

  481. and saw that he

  482. was already dead

  483. they did not

  484. break his legs

  485. but one of the soldiers

  486. pierced his side

  487. with a spear

  488. and at once

  489. there came out

  490. blood and water

  491. he who saw it

  492. has borne witness

  493. his testimony

  494. is true

  495. and he knows

  496. that he is telling

  497. the truth

  498. that you also

  499. may believe

  500. for these things

  501. took place

  502. that the scripture

  503. might be fulfilled

  504. not one of his bones

  505. will be broken

  506. and again

  507. another scripture

  508. says

  509. they will look

  510. on him

  511. whom they have

  512. pierced

  513. well

  514. Roman practice

  515. was to leave

  516. the corpse

  517. hanging on the cross

  518. for days

  519. for the vultures

  520. to eat

  521. but for the Jews

  522. this would be

  523. considered as

  524. God's curse

  525. on the whole land

  526. and people

  527. to leave

  528. the body

  529. hanging

  530. and especially

  531. for this to happen

  532. on a Sabbath day

  533. at the start

  534. of the Passover

  535. festival

  536. a festival

  537. that celebrated

  538. cleansing

  539. from sin

  540. and freedom

  541. to live

  542. with God

  543. to leave

  544. the body

  545. hanging

  546. would just

  547. contaminate

  548. in Jewish thinking

  549. so they asked

  550. Pilate to break

  551. the legs

  552. of Jesus

  553. to speed up

  554. his death

  555. and take him

  556. away

  557. they come

  558. and break

  559. the two

  560. criminals

  561. legs

  562. either side

  563. but Jesus

  564. was already

  565. dead

  566. and to be sure

  567. a soldier

  568. pierces his side

  569. with his spear

  570. and John

  571. saw

  572. that it brought

  573. a sudden

  574. flow of blood

  575. and water

  576. we're not going

  577. to go into the

  578. details

  579. but medically

  580. it's kind of

  581. obvious

  582. he was definitely

  583. dead

  584. but there's a

  585. deeper significance

  586. here that John

  587. wants us to see

  588. in Jewish

  589. sacrifices

  590. both blood

  591. and water

  592. are both used

  593. to cleanse

  594. people from

  595. all their

  596. moral sin

  597. against God

  598. making them

  599. acceptable

  600. to live with

  601. him

  602. clean

  603. reconnected

  604. to him

  605. just as the

  606. Passover lamb

  607. had to have

  608. no blemish

  609. and have no

  610. broken bones

  611. to be an

  612. acceptable

  613. sacrifice

  614. to God

  615. so we see

  616. Jesus

  617. the true

  618. lamb

  619. of God

  620. who takes

  621. away

  622. the sin

  623. of the

  624. world

  625. whose sin

  626. is taken

  627. away

  628. John tells

  629. us clearly

  630. he who saw

  631. all this

  632. happen

  633. with his

  634. own eyes

  635. has borne

  636. witness

  637. we have been

  638. listening to

  639. his testimony

  640. this morning

  641. and he's

  642. telling us

  643. this

  644. so that we

  645. also might

  646. believe

  647. as you

  648. picture

  649. the blood

  650. coming out

  651. of Jesus

  652. side

  653. do you

  654. believe

  655. that he

  656. did this

  657. willingly

  658. do you

  659. believe

  660. he did

  661. this for

  662. you

  663. then all

  664. you're wrong

  665. before God

  666. has been

  667. washed

  668. clean

  669. you can

  670. know

  671. without a

  672. doubt

  673. that God

  674. loves you

  675. John 3

  676. 16 says

  677. for God

  678. so loved

  679. the world

  680. that he

  681. gave his

  682. one and

  683. only son

  684. that whoever

  685. believes

  686. in him

  687. shall not

  688. perish

  689. but have

  690. eternal

  691. life

  692. well we're

  693. going to

  694. hear now

  695. from

  696. Marie

  697. and

  698. Marie

  699. is going

  700. to share

  701. how she

  702. has come

  703. to believe

  704. more deeply

  705. of God's

  706. love for

  707. her

  708. so thanks

  709. Marie

  710. hi

  711. I'm

  712. Marie

  713. and this

  714. is my

  715. family

  716. sorry in

  717. advance

  718. if they're

  719. a little

  720. bit noisy

  721. we've just

  722. totally rubbed

  723. them with

  724. chocolate

  725. so hopefully

  726. they'll be

  727. quiet for a

  728. moment

  729. yeah so I'm

  730. just going to

  731. share a

  732. little bit

  733. of my

  734. story

  735. so Pete

  736. and I

  737. we got

  738. we were

  739. high school

  740. sweethearts

  741. and we got

  742. married young

  743. and then a

  744. few years

  745. later we

  746. wanted to

  747. start our

  748. family

  749. and

  750. unfortunately

  751. then we

  752. were introduced

  753. to infertility

  754. and it was

  755. a really

  756. hard time

  757. for us

  758. we

  759. saw our

  760. friends and

  761. families

  762. having

  763. babies

  764. great joy

  765. and it

  766. just wasn't

  767. happening for

  768. us

  769. and the

  770. doctor said

  771. it was

  772. likely not

  773. to ever

  774. happen for

  775. us as

  776. well

  777. so we

  778. had

  779. over eight

  780. years of

  781. medical

  782. things

  783. and crying

  784. and praying

  785. and yeah

  786. it was a

  787. hard time

  788. and also

  789. a hard time

  790. testing me

  791. in my faith

  792. as a

  793. Christian

  794. as well

  795. I had to

  796. keep

  797. rereading

  798. passages

  799. like we've

  800. been reading

  801. this morning

  802. and reminding

  803. myself

  804. that I

  805. actually was

  806. loved

  807. and I had

  808. to believe

  809. that I was

  810. loved so much

  811. that Jesus

  812. would die

  813. for me

  814. and for my

  815. sins

  816. so that

  817. actually helped

  818. even though

  819. things weren't

  820. going to my

  821. plans

  822. and as

  823. you can

  824. see

  825. we

  826. eventually

  827. were blessed

  828. with kids

  829. and now

  830. our daily

  831. struggle is

  832. learning to be

  833. a mum

  834. with three

  835. young kids

  836. while the

  837. pandemic's

  838. going on

  839. and I'm

  840. trying to be

  841. a kidney

  842. teacher as

  843. well

  844. and

  845. unfortunately

  846. I often

  847. get it wrong

  848. as a mum

  849. I lose

  850. my patience

  851. I get

  852. quick

  853. tempered

  854. sometimes

  855. but

  856. thank goodness

  857. I don't

  858. have to be

  859. weighed down

  860. by that

  861. I can keep

  862. on going

  863. because I've

  864. been cleansed

  865. through Jesus

  866. of all my

  867. sin and all

  868. my failures

  869. so not only

  870. have I been

  871. cleansed

  872. but God

  873. also promises

  874. to be there

  875. with me

  876. and to help

  877. me which

  878. is a great

  879. comfort as

  880. a mum

  881. especially

  882. during all

  883. these uncertain

  884. times going

  885. on in the

  886. world

  887. so yeah

  888. I think

  889. that's just

  890. what I wanted

  891. to share

  892. with you

  893. guys

  894. that I've

  895. learned

  896. through my

  897. experiences

  898. some things

  899. can be

  900. hard

  901. and some

  902. things don't

  903. go to

  904. plans

  905. to your own

  906. plans

  907. but you

  908. can find

  909. love and

  910. great comfort

  911. in Jesus

  912. and you can

  913. be cleansed

  914. from all

  915. your sins

  916. and failures

  917. through him

  918. so yeah

  919. I'll get that

  920. out of

  921. story

  922. thank you

  923. for listening

  924. and kids

  925. do you guys

  926. want to say

  927. goodbye

  928. say bye

  929. bye

  930. thanks Marie

  931. and Pete

  932. we're just

  933. going to read

  934. the last part

  935. of the passage

  936. now from

  937. verse 38

  938. after these

  939. things

  940. Joseph of

  941. Arimathea

  942. who was a

  943. disciple of

  944. Jesus

  945. but secretly

  946. for fear of

  947. the Jews

  948. asked Pilate

  949. that he might

  950. take away

  951. the body of

  952. Jesus

  953. and Pilate

  954. gave him

  955. permission

  956. so he came

  957. and took away

  958. his body

  959. Nicodemus also

  960. who earlier

  961. had come to

  962. Jesus by

  963. night

  964. came

  965. bringing a

  966. mixture of

  967. myrrh and

  968. aloes

  969. about 75

  970. pounds in

  971. weight

  972. so they took

  973. the body

  974. of Jesus

  975. and bound

  976. it in linen

  977. cloths with

  978. the spices

  979. as is the

  980. burial custom

  981. of the Jews

  982. now in the

  983. place where he

  984. was crucified

  985. there was a

  986. garden

  987. and in the

  988. garden a

  989. new tomb

  990. in which no

  991. one had yet

  992. been laid

  993. so because of

  994. the Jewish

  995. day of

  996. preparation

  997. since the

  998. tomb was

  999. close at

  1000. hand

  1001. they laid

  1002. Jesus there

  1003. we're now

  1004. final scene

  1005. our attention

  1006. is drawn to

  1007. two very

  1008. surprising

  1009. people

  1010. they're two

  1011. men of high

  1012. position

  1013. among the

  1014. Jewish leaders

  1015. Joseph is

  1016. described as a

  1017. believer a

  1018. follower but

  1019. secretly because

  1020. he feared the

  1021. Jewish authorities

  1022. and you can

  1023. see why and

  1024. Nicodemus who

  1025. was too afraid

  1026. to come to

  1027. Jesus in the

  1028. daylight so he

  1029. saw him secretly

  1030. at night these

  1031. men had a lot

  1032. to lose their

  1033. high position

  1034. maybe even

  1035. their lives

  1036. if you were

  1037. there seeing

  1038. the corpse of

  1039. Jesus hanging

  1040. on the cross

  1041. how risky

  1042. would it be to

  1043. admit before

  1044. Pilate and the

  1045. authorities that

  1046. you believe that

  1047. this man is

  1048. worthy of

  1049. honour

  1050. I think

  1051. we're being

  1052. shown what

  1053. believing in

  1054. Jesus looks

  1055. like

  1056. it's believing

  1057. that Jesus

  1058. is worth

  1059. risking everything

  1060. else for

  1061. it's not

  1062. hiding but

  1063. openly confessing

  1064. it's not living

  1065. in fear and

  1066. darkness but

  1067. walking in the

  1068. light of his

  1069. love

  1070. they've

  1071. richly

  1072. prepared his

  1073. body for

  1074. burial so

  1075. that the

  1076. stench of

  1077. death wouldn't

  1078. be so bad

  1079. and laid

  1080. him in a

  1081. tomb in

  1082. which no

  1083. one had

  1084. yet been

  1085. laid

  1086. but even

  1087. as they

  1088. honour him

  1089. they show

  1090. that they

  1091. don't quite

  1092. grasp who

  1093. Jesus is

  1094. and what he

  1095. came to do

  1096. they were

  1097. treating Jesus

  1098. as if his

  1099. story ended

  1100. in the tomb

  1101. if the story

  1102. ended here

  1103. we would have

  1104. no reason

  1105. to celebrate

  1106. at Easter

  1107. because death

  1108. would yet

  1109. again

  1110. have the

  1111. final

  1112. save

  1113. I don't

  1114. think

  1115. Joseph

  1116. and

  1117. Nicodemus

  1118. would have

  1119. bothered

  1120. with spices

  1121. and wrapping

  1122. Jesus'

  1123. body

  1124. if they

  1125. knew what

  1126. was coming

  1127. on Sunday

  1128. morning

  1129. the story

  1130. doesn't end

  1131. here

  1132. and that is

  1133. such good

  1134. news

  1135. for all

  1136. who believe

  1137. in him

  1138. our story

  1139. doesn't end

  1140. in death

  1141. either

  1142. the cross

  1143. is blood

  1144. poured out

  1145. to reconnect

  1146. us to

  1147. God

  1148. and what

  1149. followed on

  1150. Sunday

  1151. morning

  1152. is absolutely

  1153. essential

  1154. for our

  1155. life

  1156. friends

  1157. behold

  1158. your king

  1159. innocent

  1160. and having

  1161. all authority

  1162. yet submitting

  1163. to injustice

  1164. and rejection

  1165. and death

  1166. obedient

  1167. trusting

  1168. his father's

  1169. plan

  1170. pouring out

  1171. his blood

  1172. for you

  1173. to wash

  1174. you clean

  1175. for everyone

  1176. who believes

  1177. dying

  1178. he destroyed

  1179. the power

  1180. of death

  1181. to give us

  1182. new and

  1183. forever

  1184. life

  1185. what a

  1186. king

  1187. the lamb

  1188. of God

  1189. who takes

  1190. away the

  1191. sin of the

  1192. world

  1193. good reason

  1194. to celebrate

  1195. well we're

  1196. going to

  1197. finish by

  1198. hearing from

  1199. Alyssa

  1200. as she

  1201. shares how

  1202. Jesus has

  1203. washed her

  1204. and given

  1205. her new

  1206. life

  1207. so over

  1208. to you

  1209. Alyssa

  1210. sorry

  1211. I just

  1212. wanted to

  1213. share some

  1214. of my

  1215. story and

  1216. how Jesus

  1217. has and

  1218. is still

  1219. impacting

  1220. my life

  1221. so I

  1222. grew up

  1223. in a

  1224. loving

  1225. household

  1226. we were

  1227. taught

  1228. about

  1229. Jesus

  1230. and his

  1231. love

  1232. and the

  1233. forgiveness

  1234. that he

  1235. offers

  1236. from a

  1237. really young

  1238. age

  1239. however I

  1240. don't think

  1241. I ever

  1242. really realised

  1243. the weight

  1244. of what that

  1245. meant

  1246. for myself

  1247. personally

  1248. until I

  1249. was in my

  1250. late teens

  1251. so from a

  1252. young age

  1253. I fell

  1254. into some

  1255. forms of

  1256. addiction

  1257. and it

  1258. became a

  1259. source of

  1260. comfort for

  1261. me

  1262. I always

  1263. knew in

  1264. my heart

  1265. that there

  1266. was a

  1267. God and

  1268. I believed

  1269. in him

  1270. but I

  1271. really

  1272. struggled to

  1273. feel his

  1274. love and

  1275. his grace

  1276. for myself

  1277. and it's

  1278. only really

  1279. been in the

  1280. last few

  1281. years that

  1282. I've come

  1283. to accept

  1284. that love

  1285. and forgiveness

  1286. it was in

  1287. those younger

  1288. years however

  1289. that I

  1290. had formed

  1291. some really

  1292. unhealthy

  1293. habits

  1294. and ways

  1295. of handling

  1296. pain and

  1297. emotions

  1298. I don't

  1299. feel I ever

  1300. learnt to

  1301. handle pain

  1302. well

  1303. and I

  1304. experienced

  1305. a lot of

  1306. it and

  1307. instead of

  1308. turning to

  1309. God to

  1310. find my

  1311. worth and

  1312. identity

  1313. I allowed

  1314. the addiction

  1315. and what

  1316. it brought

  1317. with it

  1318. to define

  1319. me

  1320. things like

  1321. shame

  1322. feeling not

  1323. worthy enough

  1324. and being

  1325. a failure

  1326. I carried

  1327. this identity

  1328. with me

  1329. and it only

  1330. led me

  1331. further

  1332. into the

  1333. path of

  1334. addiction

  1335. with every

  1336. trial

  1337. and pain

  1338. that I

  1339. faced

  1340. as the

  1341. years have

  1342. gone on

  1343. I feel

  1344. like

  1345. I am

  1346. letting go

  1347. of the

  1348. shame

  1349. the feelings

  1350. of not

  1351. being worthy

  1352. or of

  1353. being a

  1354. failure

  1355. and finding

  1356. my identity

  1357. more and

  1358. more in

  1359. Jesus

  1360. but I

  1361. will be

  1362. honest in

  1363. saying it's

  1364. been a

  1365. really long

  1366. hard and

  1367. slow journey

  1368. but the

  1369. only way

  1370. that's been

  1371. made possible

  1372. is coming

  1373. to understand

  1374. how wide

  1375. and how

  1376. deep

  1377. and how

  1378. great the

  1379. love of

  1380. Jesus is

  1381. for me

  1382. and what

  1383. his forgiveness

  1384. and grace

  1385. really means

  1386. it's a

  1387. daily struggle

  1388. and fight

  1389. not to

  1390. hold on

  1391. to the

  1392. past

  1393. and allow

  1394. what has

  1395. happened

  1396. to me

  1397. or what

  1398. I have

  1399. done

  1400. to define

  1401. me

  1402. and I

  1403. still fall

  1404. into the

  1405. trap of

  1406. thinking that

  1407. other things

  1408. can carry

  1409. me through

  1410. but every

  1411. day I'm

  1412. learning that

  1413. if it

  1414. wasn't for

  1415. Jesus

  1416. and his

  1417. death

  1418. and resurrection

  1419. I would

  1420. not have

  1421. been made

  1422. new

  1423. I would

  1424. not have

  1425. been changed

  1426. from the

  1427. inside out

  1428. nor have

  1429. the strength

  1430. to keep

  1431. going

  1432. you see

  1433. the greatest

  1434. comfort

  1435. the greatest

  1436. peace

  1437. and the

  1438. greatest

  1439. hope I

  1440. have

  1441. is knowing

  1442. Jesus Christ

  1443. and that he

  1444. knew everything

  1445. about me

  1446. and even

  1447. knowing everything

  1448. about me

  1449. he endured

  1450. the cross

  1451. and he died

  1452. so that we

  1453. could know

  1454. him

  1455. his love

  1456. and his

  1457. forgiveness

  1458. Jesus Christ

  1459. God himself

  1460. who knew

  1461. my sin

  1462. my weakness

  1463. my failing

  1464. the king

  1465. of the world

  1466. humbled himself

  1467. went through

  1468. all that

  1469. pain

  1470. suffering

  1471. rejection

  1472. and humiliation

  1473. thinking of

  1474. you and me

  1475. carrying the

  1476. sin of the

  1477. world

  1478. he died

  1479. on the

  1480. cross

  1481. and then

  1482. rose again

  1483. so we

  1484. could be

  1485. made new

  1486. be holy

  1487. perfect

  1488. and blameless

  1489. and also

  1490. to give us

  1491. the strength

  1492. to persevere

  1493. and fight

  1494. temptation

  1495. my king

  1496. suffered

  1497. in my

  1498. place

  1499. what a

  1500. God

  1501. what a

  1502. hope we

  1503. have

  1504. what a

  1505. king

  1506. thanks for

  1507. listening to

  1508. my story

  1509. yeah thank

  1510. you so much
